    Description of issue

West Ham vs Bayer 04 (attached). Build up to the 4th goal of the game in the 88th minute.

The ball is pulled back from the byline and the attacking player volleys at goal, the defender blocks the shot and the ball rebounds the the player who made the original pass who is still stood on the byline in an offside position.

In law, the action of the defender is considered a 'save':

Law 11 (Offside) Section 2 (Offside Offence)

A player in an offside position receiving the ball from an opponent who deliberately plays the ball, including by deliberate handball, is not considered to have gained an advantage unless it was a deliberate save by an opponent

A 'save' is when a player stops, or attempts to stop, a ball which is going into or very close to the goal with any part of the body except the hands/arms (unless the goalkeeper within the penalty area)

In this instance, the act of the defender is considered a save and therefore offside still applies to the attacking player who receives the rebound as they were in an offside position at the point the shot was taken.
