This is something I distinctly remember happening in past FMs as well. Obviously there are very rare cases where this happens in real life, but really they should retire when their contract expires at the end of the season in 99.9% of cases not caused by a catastrophic injury.

Ironically, when I had a 40 year old guy tear ligaments that would keep him out for longer than his contract, he even said he was considering retirement, but never did and refused mutual termination.

Very clunky that now one of them is extending for some reason.
