ESPNews

Some breaking news just coming in this morning on ESPNews, our sources our confirming that the USA national soccer team head coach Bob Bradley has resigned from his position, I repeat, we are hearing that the USA soccer team's head coach, Bob Bradley, has resigned, in what would be a huge shock to the growing soccer community in the US of A, we'll have more on this breaking story as we hear it. In the meantime, our sports correspondent, Andrew Gray, will give us a lowdown on Bradley and his achievements with our great national team.

Well Sarah, you're right to say this is a huge shock. Following the U.S. men's national team's disappointing showing at the 2006 FIFA World Cup, U.S. Soccer appointed Bradley, who had been serving as Arena's assistant, the interim coach of the team. Although Bradley was widely tipped to be a future national team manager, perhaps for the 2014 World Cup cycle, most observers and several national team players expected U.S. Soccer to hire recently departed Germany manager and California resident Jürgen Klinsmann, due to his success and connections to American soccer. However, after contract negotiations with Klinsmann fell through, U.S. Soccer quickly named Bradley interim manager on December 8, 2006. Although many saw Bradley as a second choice, he quickly went about building a strong foundation for the team, introducing younger players to the squad and approaching the job as though he already was, or would soon become, the permanent manager.

His tenure began successfully, and after a series of successful friendlies which included a 2–0 win over Mexico, U.S. Soccer removed Bradley's interim title and officially named him manager on May 15, 2007. He continued his success that summer, leading the United States to the 2007 Gold Cup Final, where it beat rivals Mexico 2–1 for the second time in four months on a stunning volley by Benny Feilhaber. In his first year as manager, Bradley built a record of 12 wins, 1 draw, and 5 losses, going undefeated for a period of ten games over five months.

Despite the highs of its Gold Cup victory, the U.S. did not fare as well in Copa América 2007, though U.S. Soccer sent a roster mostly made up of younger MLS-based players. This was partly because this was the second competition for the U.S. in the summer of 2007 after the Gold Cup, and partly because clubs were not officially obligated to release their players for this tournament, as the U.S. was not obligated to play in it, and was an invited guest of CONMEBOL. The team lost its first game in the Bradley era to Argentina in the tournament opener 4–1. That game was Bradley's first away game with national team and their first loss in over a year since losing to Ghana on in the 2006 World Cup. The Americans finished Copa América without a point after losing its other two games to Paraguay and Colombia. The U.S. also went on to lose consecutive games away to Sweden and at home to Brazil. However, Bradley's first year in charge ended on a high note with a pair of away wins against Switzerland and South Africa.

In terms of management at club level, in 1996, Bradley became assistant manager at D.C. United of the newly formed Major League Soccer. After two seasons there, he became the first manager of the expansion Chicago Fire, leading them to the MLS Cup and US Open Cup double in 1998. For this success, he was named MLS Coach of the Year. He won more silverware in 2000 when the Fire won the Open Cup.

After the 2002 MLS season, Bradley resigned as manager of the Fire and took the reins of his home state team, the Metro Stars. The team had previously considered him for the job in 1996 and 1997. During his tenure, he had the club headed in the right direction as the Metro Stars advanced to the US Open Cup final for the first time in club history in 2003. Bradley stayed with the club until October 2005, when he was fired with three games left in the regular season. The club had suffered losses in back-to-back fixtures and diminishing playoff prospects prior to Bradley's firing. Shortly after the 2005 season, Bradley was named the manager at Chivas USA. Bradley revived a Chivas USA team that had endured a poor first season in 2005, creating a reputable squad that finished third in the Western Conference in just its sophomore season.

As I mentioned earlier, the US will be in the Confederations Cup in summer 2009 as they won the North American Gold Cup last summer under Bradley. They will also play in the Gold Cup that summer as they automatically qualify alongside Mexico and Canada. However, they will not face the possibility of a guest invitation to the South American championship, the Copa America that summer, as the next tournament is not until summer 2011, in Argentina. That is not a definite appearance though, as Mexico are almost always invited and there are growing rumors that the second so-called 'wildcard' slot will be handed to Japan. The other major tournament that the USA can compete in is the 2010 World Cup, but for that they must go through a qualifying procedure, starting with a knockout tie against either Bermuda or the US Virgin islands. The task for whoever the new manager is in the near future would be to reach the World Cup.

Many people are now again linking Jürgen Klinsmann to the job, but it is most likely too early to achieve any real indication of who will be taking over the job that Bradley achieved so much in.

Back to you, Sarah.

Thanks for that, Andrew, and I can now tell that the news of Bradley’s resignation has been officially confirmed by the United States Soccer Federation.

Coming up after the next short break...

FOX NEWS

Earlier today, it was announced that following the resignation of Bob Bradley earlier this week, USA soccer legend Claudio Reyna has been appointed as the teams’ new manager. Reyna was a highly successful midfielder, making an amazing 112 appearances for the US national team, scoring 8 goals. He has never played in the MLS, but has enjoyed much success in Germany, Scotland and England with Leverkusen, Wolfsburg, Rangers, Sunderland and Manchester City. Unfortunately the later stages of his career were hampered by severe injury problems and he retired last winter, aged 34 at the time. He was the first American to captain a European side when he was given the armband at Wolfsburg in 1998.

With the national side, he has played at the 1998, 2002 and 2006 FIFA World Cups, and was in the squad for the 1994 tournament hosted by the USA, but failed to play due to injuries. His first task as manager will be to try and guide the US to the 2010 World Cup, starting with a knockout tie against either Bermuda or the US Virgin Islands.

(NB: IRL, Reyna moved to MLS side Red Bull New York in January 2007 and did not retire until summer 2008).

Gabriel Ferrari, a 19 year-old striker for Italian club Sampdoria, valued at $625K

Marcus Tracy, a 21 year-old striker for Danish club AaB, valued at $550K

This squad does look slightly worrying in terms of the fact that only 7 out of the 26 players playing in the American league system, and so many of our best youngster moving aboard at such a young age. USA is in a group with Costa Rica, Honduras and Canada, with the top two teams progressing to the final. All the matches are played at the Estadio Cuauhtemoc in Puebla, Mexico. It holds 46,412 supporters; all seated, but has no under-soil heating, leading to the threat of a waterlogged pitch. However, the pitch is in top condition and no rain is being predicted.

Costa Rica U23's vs. USA U23's

The match started uneventfully until the 10th minute when my left winger Zizzo had to be replaced due to injury. He may well miss the next match as we are playing once every two days. The first real chance came in the 39th minute when striker Davies hit a superb half-volley that went just wide. However, poor defending went Costa Rica through just seconds later and Skverer had to pull off a great save.

We took the lead just after the break after a throw-in missed three defenders, was chested by Altidore who turned, beat three men and hid a thunderous shot that went in off the post from 20 yards out.

60 minutes in, the US was devastated by another injury to their star striker Altidore who was replaced by Ferrari.

Minutes later, an amazing long ball found Adu in the box, but the goalie managed to turn it away and it was cleared for a throw-in.

Johnson then came close again for USA, a misplaced cross having to be franticly pushed over the bar for a corner. It looked like a matter of time before 2-0.

Ferrari long-range effort then went just over on 73 minutes.

Adu also put it just wide a minute later.

Kiljestan nearly secured the win in injury time with a fifty-yard free-kick that brushed the post, but the US will be satisfied with their dominating win.

Attendance: around 300

After the game, it was revealed that while Zizzo was alright, Altidore was out for at least three weeks and Robbie Findley was called up as a replacement.

Robbie Findley, a 22 year-old striker playing for American club Salt Lake, valued at $375K.

Honduras U23's vs. USA U23's

We started positively with Ferrari nearly opening the scoring with a mazy dribble from the centre circle and a powerful shot from 25 yards out.

The US took the lead after 13 minutes, with Davie dribbling in from the left before firing a low shot past the stranded goalie for 1-0.

The lead was doubled two minutes later with Spector heading in a Zizzo corner.

USA was awarded a penalty after 24 minutes, with Romero clattering Davies who was chasing a long ball. Zizzo stepped up confidently and hammered it into the bottom left hand corner for USA's 3rd of the game.

4-0 came four minutes before half time with a passing move from a throw-in lead to unmarked Ferrari hammering it into the bottom corner.

Valdares long-range cracker nearly clinched one back for Honduras in first-half injury time but it went just wide of the post.

Romero again tripped Davies on 50 minutes, but it was just outside the box. Zizzo's quick free-kick found Davies but he shot straight at the Goalkeeper.

Skverer pulled off a top-notch save from Espinoza to keep it at 4-0.

Honduras was suddenly posing a threat and Sevilla headed just over on 69 minutes.

Medina again nearly got a goal for Honduras with four minutes left but he put his shot over to spurn a good chance, but USA will be pleased with a 4-0 win.

Attendance: around 300

With this America had qualified from the group but were told later that Wynne had been injured and they therefore called up Kevin Alston as a replacement.

Kevin Alstin, 19 year-old defender, play for American club New England, valued at $180K.

USA U23's vs. Canada U23's

Having already qualified, the USA tried out some of their unused players and nearly took an early lead after Alston shot just over from 18 yards.

However, two minutes later Jakovic should have opened for Canada but shot over in a 1-on-1 situation.

Alvarez corner then found Soumare on 16 minutes but the goalie made a superb block.

USA took the lead after 21 minutes when Findley made a skillful run, his shot hit the post and the grateful Edu tucked in the rebound.

Shea then had a chance three minutes later but headed just wide.

Alston was in disbelief as to quite how his top-corner bound effort from the corner of the box was saved just before half-time. Baldeh should have scored an open header for Canada in injury time but missed the target.

13 seconds after the restart, Tracy ball to the far post let Findley fire into an open goal for 2-0.

Just a minute later, Cervi hit the American crossbar from 35 yards out.

Soumare then headed home an Alvarez corner on 51 minutes. 3-0 USA with a second string side.

Johnson somehow hit the post from the right flank on 65 minutes with what was meant to be a low cross.

Shea then put the ball into Hill on 80 minutes, whose shot was ruled out for offside.

Findley pulled the ball across to Tracy with five minutes remaining for 4-0, but it came off the Canadian goalie and was given as an own goal.

Attendance: around 300

Guatemala U23's v USA U23's

This match is a bit of a weird one. It is a semi-final, but the winners get the big prize - a place at the summer Olympics. The 'final' is just for the title of the best North American U23 team.

Davies went through on goal on 5 minutes after a great pass from Bradley but shot over first-time.

USA then claimed a penalty on 8 minutes, saying Rodas had pushed Zizzo, but the referee didn't agree.

Heider should have headed home two minutes after with some poor Guatemalan defending but put it wide.

On 12 minutes, Davies ran into the box from the left but shot over from a central position. USA was dominating, but just couldn't score.

An embarrassingly bad Canadian goal kick was intercepted by Kljestan on 15 minutes, he passed to Zizzo but his shot was saved.

On 23 minutes, a great passing move by Guatemala led to a lob shot by Arriaza coming very close to going in the net but instead landing on it.

Skverer then had to pull off a point blank save from a header just two minutes after would, but the USA counter led to Heider nearly scoring, his shot being pushed wide by the keeper.

It was 0-0 at half time in a very eventful game.

Davies shot just wide from 20 yards after 70 minutes in a second half which was the opposite of the first, with absolutely nothing happening.

Zizzo should have headed in a Johnson cross with 11 minutes remaining but tried to pull it back across goal and the ball went wide.

Bradley’s long-range effort late on was very well saved by the goalie as the match looked to be heading for extra time.

In injury time, Peterlin played a fine through ball in to Davies who slotted past the keeper for a late late winner. The fans were Jubilant and the game ended to chants of 'We're all going on a smog town tour'.

We enjoyed a 'higher' crowd of 444 in this match, but I think have the final at a 104000 seater Estadio Azteca is a tad ambitious.

Mexico U23's vs. USA U23's

For the first time we were underdogs in this away match and did not get off to a good start as our goalie had to flap at a cross in the first minute, nearly gifting the Mexicans an early chance.

However, after just 11 minutes, Heider played the ball to Davies who beat his man a shot low into the opposite corner for 1-0 USA. A great start, but could we keep it up? We had not yet conceded a goal in this tournament, but neither had Mexico before that.

5 minutes later, a promising long ball from Mexico found Esqueda, but his 'goal' was narrowly ruled out for offside.

By the half-hour mark, Mexico had got a number of small chances through our poor defending and we seemed nervous.

But then, on the counter we launched a long ball up, and Davies appeared to be tripped over inside the area by Rodriguez but the highly controversial ref signalled to play on and the chance was gone.

We finally conceded after 35 minutes when a Guardado corner was headed straight to Esqueda to rifle home for 1-1.

The second half started poorly as Skverer pushed away a superb Aellano long shot.

Our second shot of the game came on 56 minutes as Zicco dribbled inwards, passed to Kjlestan who laid it off to Bradley, whose long-range shot found the bottom corner. Two shots all game, and we were 2-1 up!

A throw in then found Arrelano in the box, but our goalie parried it for a corner.

However, on 82 minutes our defence broke again and a Guardado cross found Guzman, who tucked it away for Mexico. 2-2. and we went to extra time.

The first half of extra time nearly saw Mexico take the lead three times, but super saves from Skverer rescued us.

At the start of the second half, Guzman put it just wide when he should have scored.

Mexico continued to dominate but we held out and took it to penalties.

After 5 penalties each (with USA going first) everyone had scored and we went to sudden death.

When we reached our eighth penalties each, USA had scored there’s. Like the many takers before him, Guzman knew he had to score to keep the Mexicans in the game

He stepped up.

Our keeper dived too early

He hit it confidently down the middle...

AND THE BALL WAS CAUGHT BY SKVERER'S TRAILING LEG, IT WAS ALL OVER, AND USA WERE THE CHAMPIONS!!!

Attendance: 1247

How is this going? Anyone got hints for improvements?

Combine your bulletins. Right now what you're doing is bumping your thread with one-line updates, which can be annoying to some readers. Bear in mind that this is a story forum, so we need to see some stuff along the lines of your first posts. For example, combine your last couple of posts or perhaps, if you are doing the story from Reyna's perspective, what he thinks about DC United winning the CONCACAF Champions League.

Okay, maybe this would have been more suited to the shiny new careers forum, which was opened hours after posting. Also, I will take your suggestions there, but how do you feel my match reports can improve? Do they need to include more of the managers thoughts, etc? To avoid a '1-line update', I will take your final suggestion now. ;)

WEDNESDAY 7TH MAY 2009

DC United have won the Champions League, beating Mexican side Pachuca 4-3 on aggregate in the final. They have done well to do this, having been 2-1 down from the first leg. They fell further behind in the first half of the return fixture, but the manager Tom Soehn must be delighted they scored twice in the second half, before clinching a late winner in extra time. I think it may do our players good as they should have confidence from beating our main North American rivals to three tournaments recently (Gold cup, Olympics qualifying, Champs League). I am pleased they won it as well as they have a mostly USA squad, and some players such as Zach Wells, Clyde Simms and Bryan Namoff may come in handy.

Does that sound good, 10 3?

I feel that this is my strongest squad atm, with no injury problems, and should be able to easily dispatch of Bermuda. There are also a few youngsters from the U23's tournament. In other news, we remained 12th in the May world rankings.

FRIDAY 6TH JUNE 2009

I today had a press conference to attent before the first leg of my match aganist Bermuda. I saw a couple of media reports suggesting my players may be a bit over confident, so I decided to make sure they keep their feet on the ground (although I will have to tell them the exeption is when going for a header!), and I also had an importent announcement to make about the captaincy...

Q1: Morning Mr. Reyna, as we must call you now, have you made a decision in regards to the USA captaincy?

CR: Yes. Carlos Bocanegra is to retain his position as captain, and the vice will be Landon Donovon. I feel Carlos is a great player for my team, he is influential and he is the right type of character, resolute but highly determained.

Q2: How would you describe your relationship with the Bermuda manager.

Oops. I didn't even know who he was!

CR: I don't think that is any of your concern

Q3: Do you even know his name? What is he called?

Luckily, a press officer transmitted a message to me through my headset.

CR: Kyle Lightbourne.

Q4: Very well. Many people are claiming that having a squad with so many foreign-based players has a bad effect on the team. Do you agree with this?

CR: No, of course I don't, if I did I would not have picked this team, would I?

Q5: Do you think Peterlin will handle the pressure well if he wins his first cap, and Cherundolo on his 50th?

CR: I have every confidense in my players.

That was the end of the conference, and despite a scare I got out of it OK, although I made a mental note to thank whoever it was who gave me the Bermuda manager's name... what was it again?

7TH JUNE 2008

BERMUDA 1-4 USA

I was a bit dissapointed with this match, not because of how my team played, but because I only learnt one thing form it - I should send my schoolboys squad next time I face this lump of doggy-doo. The only player who threatened me was New York strike Khano Smith, and he grabbed a goal, fair play to him

14TH JUNE 2008

USA 3-0 BERMUDA

Exactly the same as a week ago. The only thing I was left wondering was whether I should send the high school side next time or if the elementary one would do. In all fairness I think they'd beat the kindergarten one, although we might just grab a lucky draw. ;) Altidore scored twice, other was an OG.

Atendance: 44963 out of 45000 (100% full to the nearest whole %)

The teams though to the second phrase are:

USA

Mexico

Barbados

Costa Rica

Jamaica

Tinidad & Tobago

Grenada

Hoduras

El Salvador

Suriname

Panama

Canada

We were put into three groups of four, and the top two teams from each group go through to the next phrase.

The draw was as follows:

I am very confident that we can progress from this group with a 100% record. It is a double round robin, so we face each team home and away.

LOLZ, you're so funny with your rebellious attitude!

And, to be fair, his posting times don't prove that he has literally been on the internet all day, just that he started posting at 11:27 and that he has posted updates throughout the day, finishing at 18:55.... I don't know about you but I could probably be on the internet earlier and leave later than that.

You have, literally, got to pick your words a bit more carefully.

Anyway! Like 10-3 has said, Spelling is important, grouping your posts together so we aren't just seeing small updates, maybe doing a little more in the way of match reports (e.g adding the scorers in each game etc). Also, formatting is your friend :).

Other than that, the best advice I could give is enjoy yourself. It is said a lot around here when people ask for advice. You should write for yourself, as long as you enjoy doing it other people are going to enjoy reading it!

Okay, thanks alot for that. I had been on the 'net alot as school was closed due to 'uncomfirmed reports of a minor health problem' (in other words, Swine Flu) but it was enough to make my mum go manic and keep me indoors. Unfortunatly, I don't think I will be able to play FM again untill later because my dad is working from home on the PC I used yesterday, this laptop I am posting from has not got FM installed and I have lost the disk so I cannot install it. I may go through and improve the story a bit though, group posts, add emotions, remove spelling errors etc.
