Certain rejiging of dates has been required to make this fit in properly with game dates. Using CM 01/02 as it has the only pre and save game editor I am familiar with. Certain things have been edited as you’ll see soon. Some things will also need editing as I go along as what the game does isn’t always feasible as well as not wanted in the story line too. Essentially any HSE stand closures will be reversed as well as any takeovers. Basically keeping the status quo on pish poor finances.

There are also several non real players in the game database several of which will be at the club early on (yeah I’ve played on a bit to make sure things work ;)) all part of one of my other ideas of filling up a naff European country with a load of kid superstars to see how far the naff European team can progress. Well erm lets just say world cup winners and leave it at that. Might do some form of story relating to that at some point actually based on whatever game I’m running at the time, probably a personal game.

July 2001

Robert Peston Blog 11th July

Today I have learnt that the Glazers are struggling to refinance their debt that they ran up in the process of buying Manchester United football club. The deadline to refinance the debt and hence pay off the initial debt incurred in buying the club is July 18th 2001.

My sources say that so far the Glazers have been unable to find anyone willing to refinance the £900 million debt incurred when they bought the club 3 years ago. This has the possible implication of both the Glazers being declared bankrupt as well as the club due to the way the original purchase was completed.

The Glazers are personally liable for the £650 million debt and the club has another £250 million loaded onto their books. The Glazers have assets of around £500 million, basically their sports interests in the US. The club assets are essentially Old Trafford, the players on the Carrington training ground. The sale and lease back of Old Trafford and Carrington, I am led to believe, would cover £150 million if needed.

The structure of the deal was that US based Hedge funds covered the Glazers personal debt, whilst RBS covers the club loaded debt. What will happen no one knows but in a weeks time, one way or another, Manchester United will have a clear indication of where they stand.

Robert Peston Blog 18th July

It has emerged today that the Glazers have failed to refinance the Manchester United football club and thus will be declared bankrupt. What precisely will happen to the club is yet to be known but a new owner of some description will be announced in the next day or so. This owner is liable to be a bank or hedge fund depending on how exactly the debts get split up.

For now the rumours are that Sir Alex Ferguson will pick this time to retire as it is widely assumed that whatever form the club emerges in over the next few days there will be no money available. In fact it is more than likely the club will have a hefty amount of debt on the books and will be forced to see key players to raise money.

Robert Peston Blog 21st July

Over the last few days deals have been done and the new owner of Manchester United football club has emerged. The Glazers personal debt has been repaid by the US hedge funds taking on all their US assets, mostly sports clubs, including their stake in AIG the club sponsors. The football club debts themselves have been taken on by their ‘owner’ RBS in a deal as stated in this official statement released this morning.

“The Royal Bank of Scotland has hereby assumed the ownership of Manchester United football club on a temporary basis to allow time for a deal to be struck with the club itself and MUST the independent supporters club. RBS is owed £250 million by the club and how that is repaid will depend on the discussions with the club and MUST.”

As you can see there is a lot of debt to be repaid to RBS in some way which has the footballing authorities watching proceedings closely to avoid any rules being broken.

Manchester United FC Press Release 23rd July

As you are all aware the Glazers failed to repay their debt obligations recently and have since been declared bankrupt. In this process the US hedge funds that the Glazers had borrowed money from were repaid by taking on the Glazers US assets so they have no claim left with the club.

The club itself however still had a £250 million debt with RBS to cover. This has been done after intense negotiations with RBS, the club management and MUST. The deal is that we have repaid RBS by being allowed a £250 million overdraft. There are numerous clauses in this overdraft which will not be detailed here. Essentially if the club cant run itself profitably RBS will be able to invest into the club in exchange for a stake in the club.

Currently the club is 100% owned by Newton Heath holdings, a shell company set up to allow the club to pay RBS back. In the process of this deal MUST have first option on investing into the club ahead of RBS, with the same taking a stake in the club proviso. Currently MUST is raising funds to be able to buy a stake in the club which we are supporting.

One of the consequences of this is that Sir Alex Ferguson has decided to retire and in his place the board have appointed a person who is more a business expert than a football manager in his place. This is feasible as the assistant manager will be in charge of the actual day to day running of the squad. This will cover training as well as the tactics used although transfer targets and sales of players will be handled by the two of them.

The new manager is a former RBS employee who left to set up his own consultancy the Xeelee group. The manager is Reid Malenfant who has recently quit as chief Executive of the Xeelee group and taken up its Presidents role instead to retain interests there. These interests will not hinder his work for Manchester United and in fact will probably help us run ourselves in a smarter more cost effective manner.

Please wish us well for the future and if you have any questions please use are monthly press conferences to ask them. The first of these press conferences will be at the start of September.

Sir Alex’s final legacy and the transfer listing of star players

Manchester United Press Release July 29th

The final thing Sir Alex did before leaving the club was secure the signing of 9 Luxembourger under 19’s to the club. These players were spotted via the clubs extensive scouting network and will hopefully fill in the gaps of the star players as they are inevitably sold off to service the debt.

The players are :-

Fearne Cotton a 17 year old DM R/L/C

Rachael Leigh Cook a 17 year old D/DM R/L/C

Hannah Spearitt a 18 year old D R/L/C

Leelee Sobieski a 18 year old GK

Keith Stuart a 18 year old DC

Miley Cyrus a 18 year old SW/D C

Tessa James a 18 year old SC

Eliza Dushku a 17 year old FC

Caroline Wozniacki a 18 year old AM R/L

It is unlikely the club will be signing any other players any time soon due to the large debt to be paid off but there is a small transfer fund available.

Due to the large debt the club has had to list the following players in the hope of recouping some money to reduce the debt. It will also lower the club wage bill which is currently £60 million per year.

The players are :-

Edwin Van der Sar, Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, Cristiano Ronaldo, Owen Hargreaves, Wayne Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov and Carlos Tevez.

As you can see this is most of the first team squad but the debt means drastic measures are needed. It is hoped the youth squad and reserves will step up to the big time just like they did back in the days when Beckham, Giggs, Scholes, Butt and the Nevilles were youth team players themselves stepping up to the big time.

The first competitive game of the season will be the Charity Shield against Portsmouth at Wembley on August 12th at which point it is expected that no players will have been sold by then.

Charity Shield August 12th vs Portsmouth at Wembley

This game is the opening game of the football season for the big clubs even if it is essentially a glorified friendly. The team line ups were as follows.

Portsmouth James (Capt); Belhadj, Distin, Kaboul, Campbell, Johnson; Krancjar, Diarra, Diop; Defoe, Crouch. Subs: Stewart (Gk), Davis, Utaka, Sahar, Mvuemba, Traore, Pamarot.

Manchester United Van der Sar; Spearitt, Stuart, Cyrus (Capt), Evans; Nani, Hargreaves, Park; Ronaldo; Dushku, Rooney. Subs: Kuszczak (Gk), James, Rafael, Wozniacki, O’Shea, Leigh Cook, Cotton.

The game was off to a quick start when in the 2nd minute when Evans whipped in a cross from the right for Dushku to head home. Then after a lot of attacking and counter attacking United made another breakthrough. This time Dushku won the ball and rounded both Distin and Campbell before curling a 20 yarder around James into the top corner for his second of the game.

Dropping off the pace a bit, due to their 2-0 lead, United gave the ball away and Diarra pounced on a slim chance and smashed the ball past Van der Sar into the net getting Portsmouth back into the game. Shortly afterwards Diarra surged through the United defence and scored his second of the game levelling the match 2-2.

The second half was unfortunately a boring affair compared with the first half and with nobody scoring the match ended 2-2 meaning a penalty shootout was required. United won the shootout 3-2 after O’Shea scored the winning penalty after a miss by Pamarot.

Premier League August 18th Liverpool Vs Manchester United at Anfield

Prior to this match Manchester United sold Cristiano Ronaldo to Chelsea for a club record £26 million which was swiftly swallowed up by the debt.

The team line ups for this game were as follows :-

Liverpool Reina; Aurelio, Agger, Skrtel, Degen; Riera, Alonso, Mascherano, Gerrard (Capt); Keane, Torres. Subs: Cavalieri (GK), Lucas, Kuyt, Dossena, Arbeloa

Manchester United Van der Sar; Evra, Cyrus, Vidic (Capt), Brown; Anderson, Hargreaves, Carrick; Tevez; Rooney, Berbatov. Subs: Foster (GK), Nani, Ferdinand, James, Fletcher.

Liverpool started of well attacking whilst United were happy to sit back so it was no surprise that Alonso smashed in a goal inside 5 mins. A few rash challenges saw Rooney and Vidic booked in the first half of the first half, before Berbatov made a quick break and crossed for Tevez to score an equaliser.

United were more attacking after the Tevez goal and Liverpool took advantage of it with a quick counter that lead to Torres scoring Liverpool’s second. On the stroke of half time Hargreaves picked up a yellow card for flattening Gerrard. Not that Gerrard deserves flattening off course ;)

The second half saw lots of pressure from United who were looking for another equaliser but Liverpool defended well. After 76 minutes a Liverpool attack saw Torres score his second of the game as Gerrard whipped in a cross from the right. Shortly afterwards Berbatov scored for United to make the last 10 mins or so tense as United were after a third to sneak a draw. Liverpool however managed to hang on for the win.

Premier League August 21st Manchester United Vs Chelsea at Old Trafford

The first home game of the season for United and it started with the teams lining up as follows :-

Manchester United Van der Sar; Evra, Ferdinand, Vidic (Capt), Brown; Anderson, Hargreaves, Scholes; Tevez; Rooney, Berbatov. Subs: Foster (GK), Nani, James, Cyrus, Giggs

Chelsea Cech; Ashley Cole, Carvalho, Terry (Capt), Boswinga; Joe Cole, Mancienne, Mikel, Minerio, Ronaldo; Drogba. Subs: Cudicini (GK), Anelka, Alex, Belletti, Lampard.

Off course this game was also the first time the recently sold Ronaldo had returned to United. The game itself started off rather boring and dull with both sides being very cagey and not looking to be caught with a counter attack. Stayed this way until early into the second half when Rooney scored from a header from a Cyrus freekick.

Soon after Chelsea began to attack more and eventually scored the equalising goal. Ashely Cole’s freekick finding the head of Alex and then going straight past Van der Sar into the net. Shortly afterwards Tevez picked up a knock but couldn’t be replaced as United had already used all their subs. His injury will keep him out for 10 days with a gashed leg.

Super Cup August 24th Manchester United Vs Zenit St Petersberg at Stade Louis II, Monaco

Prior to the game it was announced that United would be facing Barcelona, Bordeaux and Shaktar Donetsk in the Champions League first group stage.

The team line ups were as follows :-

Manchester United: Van der Sar; Eva, Ferdinand, Vidic (Capt), O’Shea; Anderson, Hargreaves, Park; Rooney; James, Berbato. Subs: Foster (GK), Cyrus, Evans, Neville, Nani, Dushku, Wellbeck

Zenith: Malafeev; Dong-Jin, Puygrenier, Ivanov, Djioev, Komiisarov; Dominguez, Tymoschuk (Capt), Ashavin; Danni, Fayzulin. Subs: Mitin (GK), Balkarov, Tarasov, Reshetov, Kleimenov, Nekrasov, Denisov.

United started the game positively with numerous attacks down both wings. One of these attacks saw Evra break through down the left and have enough space to cross for James to head the ball home. Shortly before half time United added a second via Rooney poking a rebound in after James had another header saved.

The second half wasn’t much different with United continuing to attack until halfway through Rooney saw the keeper of off his line and lobbed the ball up and over Malafeev into the net making it 3-0. Naturally United eased off at this point and took things easy for the rest of the game.

Premier League September 8th Portsmouth Vs Manchester United at Fratton Park

Before this next game the finances for August were announced and Manchester United have ended the month with a net gain of £20 million although this does include the sale of Ronaldo for £26 million to Chelsea. The interest on the overdraft was a whopping £5.4 million however so more players will have to be sold to keep on top of the finances.

Team line ups:-

Portsmouth James (Capt); Belhadj, Distin, Kaboul, Campbell, Johnson; Krancjar, Muvemna, Diop; Defoe, Crouch. Subs: O’Brien (GK), Utaka, Pamarot, Kanu, Lauren.

Manchester United Van der Sar; Evra, Ferdinand, Vidic (Capt), O’Shea; Scholes, Anderson, Park; Tevez; Rooney, Berbatov. Subs: Foster (GK), Nani, Dushku, James, Cyrus.

The first half was pretty dull with only a few chances for each team. The second half wasn’t much better really but at least a goal was scored. This goal was scored by Berbatov after a great piece of skill getting past 3 defenders and then chipping James. Shame that was the only highlight of the entire game though as United just sat back and defended after the goal.

Champions League 1st Group Stage September 12th Barcelona vs Manchester United at the Nou camp

Prior to this game the board announced that £4 million from sponsorship had been paid into the clubs account, which will go a little way towards alleviating the debt issues.

Team line ups:

Barcelona Valdes; Sylvinho, Abidal, Puyol (Capt), Pique, Alves; Xavi, Messi, Toure; Henry, Eto’o. Subs: Ruben (GK), Hleb, Bojan, Keita, Marquez, Iniesta, Gudjohnsen.

Manchester United Van der Sar; Evra, Ferdinand, Vidic (Capt), O’Shea; Anderson, Carrick, Park; Tevez; Rooney, Berbato. Subs: Foster (GK), Nani, Dushku, Brown, Cyrus, James, Hargreaves.

It was another boring game in the first half as both teams had far too much respect for each others attacking prowess. The second half however saw a fair bit of action at both ends. Barcelona had more shots and if it wasn’t for Van der Sar in goal United would surely of conceded. 74 mins in and Anderson took out Messi in a horrible looking two footed tackle and rightly got sent off for it.

Premier League September 15th Manchester United Vs Arsenal at Emirates Old Trafford

Team line ups:

Manchester United Van der Sar; Evra, Ferdinand, Vidic (Capt), O’Shea; Anderson, Hargreaves, Scholes; Tevez; Rooney, Berbatov. Subs: Foster (GK), James, Giggs, Nani, Cyrus.

Arsenal Almunia; Clichy, Silvestre, Toure, Sagna; van Persie, Nasri, Fabregas (Capt), Rosicky; Eduardo, Adebayor. Subs: Fabianski (GK), Vela, Eboue, Gallas, Walcott.

This was a bit of a strange game as Arsenal were by far the better team yet failed to do anything of note. The first half saw them running rings around United so Eduardo scoring was not surprising at all. In the second half United seemed to be playing a lot better and soon got an equaliser thanks to Vidic.

Further continued pressure saw Berbatov score from a free kick past the motionless Almunia. United continued pressing for more goals and if it wasn’t for a spirited Arsenal defence would have had a third goal. After a few transfers midway through the second half however Arsenal were back on top and pressing for the equaliser. If it wasn’t for some great challenges from Vidic they’d of got it too.

Champions League 1st Group Stage September 18th Manchester United Vs Shaktar Donetsk at Old Trafford

Prior to this game Ryan Giggs was sold to Celtic for £1 million, yes not a huge fee but it did remove £3mill plus from the wage bill too.

Team line ups:

Manchester United Van der Sar; O’Shea, Cyrus, Ferdinand, Brown (Capt); Scholes, Hagreaves, Park; Tevez; Rooney, Berbatov. Subs: Foster (GK), James, Evans, Nani, Fletcher, Leigh Cook, Dushku.

Shaktar Donetsk Khudzhamaov; Rat, S Popov, Chyhrynskyi, Levchenko, Ilsinho; Musolitin, Kravchenko, Srna (Capt); Castillo, Moreno. Subs: Yakovenko (GK), Khacheridi, Y Popov, Boyko, Jadson, Iatsenko, Lutsenko.

United totally dominated the game yet only managed to score twice. Both goals were in the first half and were scored by Tevez and Rooney inside 20 mins. Naturally having swiftly taken the lead United sat back and didn’t attack as often. The second half started of badly for United as Shaktar’s single shot of the game went in making the scoreline 2-1. Still it wasn’t anything to worry about as United continued to control the game and really should of finished with more than 2 goals.

Premier League September 22nd Newcastle Vs Manchester United at St James Park

The line ups for this game were:-

Newcastle Given; Enrique, Bassong, Taylo, Beye; Coloccini; N’Zogbia, Duff, Guthrie; Owen (Capt), Xisco. Subs: Harper (GK), Gonzalez, Martins, Cacapa, Gutierez

Manchester United Van der Sar; Era, Ferdinand, Vidic (Capt), O’Shea; Scholes, Hargreaves, Park; Tevez; Rooney, Berbatov. Subs: Foster (GK), Nani, Fletche, Dushku, James.

Newcastle started very positively and inside 2 minutes had already scored thanks to a Xisco header. Newcastle continued to attack but Manchester United hot back with Park charging down the left wing and crossing to Berbatov who smashed the ball past a stationary Given. Further pressure from Manchester United saw another Park run and cross to Berbatov going in making it 2-1.

More chances at both ends before Guthrie picked up a loose ball and squeezed a shot past Van der Sar making it 2-2 at half time. The second half, although lively, had fewer chances and no more goals so the game ended in a 2-2 draw.

Champions League 1st Group Stage September 25th Manchester United Vs Bordeaux at Old Trafford

Prior to this game Paul Scholes joined Celtic for £1 million which helps a little towards the debt repayments as well as reducing the wage bill by a further £3 million a year.

Team line ups:-

Manchester United Van der Sar; O’Shea, Cyrus, Ferdinand, Brown (Capt); Anderson, Carrick, Hargreaves; Tevez; Rooney, Berbatov. Subs Foster (GK), Nani, Park, Petrucci, Dushku, James, Welbeck.

Bordeaux Rame (Capt); Placente, Marange, Henrique, Planus, Diawara; Wendel, Fernando, Francia; Cavenaghi, Jussie. Subs Delpierre (GK), Hernandez, Gouffran, Chamakh, Ducasse, Marchal, Jurietti.

Nothing really much happened in the first half until Cavenaghi picked up the ball mid way through the half and scored a cracking goal. Near the end of the first half Marange got sent off for pulling Tevez back in the box, then Tevez scored the resulting penalty. Straight after Berbatov got the ball and smacked one in too making 2-1 at half time.

The second half was all Manchester United’s due to their numerical superiority yet it took 20 minutes before Hargreaves scored a wonder goal further increasing their lead. A few minutes later O’Shea scored with a header from a free kick and then United sat back and defended the rest of the game out.

Team Line ups:

Manchester City Hart; Garrido, Ben-Haim, Richards, Zabeleta; Kompany, Fernandes, Dunne (Capt); Robinho, Wright-Phillips; Jo. Subs Schmeichel (GK), Elano, Bojinov, Onuoha, Glauber.

The first derby match of the season and it didn’t disappoint. United on the attack from the start with Berbatov scoring within 2 minutes. United continued to attack and after several close shots Hargreaves sent a free kick in that Ferdinand headed into the net giving United a 2-0 lead inside 15 minutes. This however was the spark that ignited City who went on the attack.

United however defended well and just before the half time whistle Berbatov scored his second of the game giving United a 3-0 lead. Naturally United eased off in the second half, and in fact City had a lot of chances but failed to score so the game ended in a 3-0 win to United.

Premier League October 3rd Manchester United Vs Blackburn at Old Trafford

Prior to this match the September financial report was issued. The month of September saw a net profit of just under £1 million despite the interest charge of £5.3 million. The sale of Scholes and Giggs to Celtic netted the club £2 million and also reduced the wage bill down to £50 million a year which was also good.

Just before the game Hargreaves was sold to Arsenal for £8 million as the club continues to try and get out of debt.

Team line ups:

Manchester United Van der Sar; Evra (Capt), Ferdinand, Cyrus, O’Shea; Fletcher, Anderson, Park; Tevez; Rooney, Berbatov. Subs Foster (GK), Dushku, Nani, James, Brown

Blackburn Robinson; Mokoena, Aljofree, Khizanishvili, Ooijer (Capt); Gamst Pedersen, Vogel, Reid, Emerton; Santa Cruz, Derbyshire. Subs Bull (GK), Warnock, McCarthy, Samba, Simpson.

It was a pretty dull game, probably due to the fact it chucked it down all 90 minutes. United were the better team and despite Robinson’s heroics Rooney finally managed to score midway through the second half. United then just sat back and defended getting a simple 1-0 win that moved them up to 4th in the league.

Premier League October 13th Middlesbrough Vs Manchester United at The Riverside

Team Line ups:

Middlesbrough Jones; Pogatez, Wheater, Huth, Hoyte; Downing, Shawky, Digard, Tuncay (Capt); Emnes, Alfonso Alves. Subs: Turnball (GK), Aliadiere, Porritt, Franks, Riggott.

Manchester United Van der Sar; Evra (Capt), Cyrus, Ferdinand, O’Shea; Fletcher, Anderson, Park; Tevez; Rooney, Berbatov. Subs: Foster (GK), Nani, Carrick, James, Possebon.

This was a pretty boring game despite the final scoreline. Boro were woeful yet had most had decent possession, United were clinical yet never really attacked much. Probably down to the early goals from United. Park scored with a header inside 3 mins and then Anderson smashed one in 8 mins later.

With Tevez breaking free late on in the first half and scoring the 3-0 half time lead was more than enough to allow United to sit back and not do much for the rest of the game. Nowt much happened in the second half apart from the puddles on the pitch getting larger.

Manchester United Van der Sar; Evra, Ferdinand, Vidic (Capt), O’Shea; Fletcher, Anderson, Park; Tevez; Rooney, Berbatov. Subs: Foster (GK), Nani, Dushku, James, Carrick, Cyrus, Leigh Cook.

This quite frankly was an even more boring match than the Boro game. Unfortunately it ended in a 1-1 draw too. The first move of note was when Berbatov broke free straight after half time to give United the lead. Fernando got the equaliser for Bordeaux mid way through the second half and then the game petered out to a draw.

Sunderland Gordon; McCartney, Nosworthy, Ferdinand, Chimbomba; Diouf, Tainio, Whitehead (Capt), Malbranque; Healy, Jones. Subs: Colgan (GK), Miller, Collins, Leadbitter, Reid.

It was one of those games today, total domination and a easy win. Should of scored more than we did but I blame Tevez for that. Berbatov scored the first goal inside the first 5 minutes with a cracking shot. Plenty more shots from United in the first half with Tevez hitting the post twice alone.

In the second half Anderson scored with a thunderous strike of his own and then straight after for some unknown reason Tevez punched Anton Ferdinand and got sent off. There was fewer chances after that as we were a man down but Sunderland still couldn’t even get a shot on target.

This game was the best we have played all season as we totally dominated Barcelona from start to finish. Berbatov scored from a corner 8 minutes in and things only got better from there. Another Berbatov goal just before half time had the game in the bag. Berbatov got his hattrick thanks to a Park cross midway through the second half. Only downer was Vidic got injured.

It was one of those boring games with few chances for either team. The midfields cancelling each other out nicely. The difference being we had a 3:1 split to Evertons 1:4 split. Meaning they snuck a goal via Jagielka and we couldn’t get past their holding midfielder, Jagibloodyelka.

Carling Cup 3rd round October 31st 2001 Manchester United vs Middlesborough at Old Trafford

Immediately before the game Gary Neville was sold to Celtic for £1.4 million also reducing the wage bill down to £43.5 million a year. Slowly getting there albeit losing good players.

Team Lineups:

Manchester United Van der Sar; Spearitt, Leigh Cook, Stuart, Evans; Nani, Fletcher (Capt), Park; Tevez; James, Rooney. Subs: Foster (GK), Rafael, Cotton, Wozniacki, Dushku.

This game was much better even if it took until the second half for things to really get going. Not a huge amount of shots but lots of attacking play. Pity it took until the second half for Park to score both the goals of the game. The first was a stunning long range effort from Rooney’s cross, and the second was a tap in from close range from a Tevez pass.
