Is it possible? Somewhere, in all of us, we can see ourselves in the Coppa Italia Final at the expense of Milan. However, common sense suggests their 2-1 first leg lead should prevail, since we are yet to so much as draw with them in eight previous meetings. We're unchanged.

We did it! icon_biggrin.gif Milan put out a 'weakened' side, but with Luca Toni, Vitaly Kutuzov, Kieron Dyer, Damiano Zenoni, and Luciano Zauri in the ranks they can still match and better most sides. We, quite amazingly, limited them to just one sole shot at our goal, which arrived very late in the day. We needed a good start, which was given to us by referee Fabrizio Jordan. Christos Alexiou was impeded by Igor Biscan in the goalmouth, and a penalty was given. For the third time in 2011 alone Stilianos Doukas sunk the penalty and put us ahead by way of away goals. Still, everyone expected Milan to pop back and pressurise as they always have. Not today. Doukas was in inspired form. Defending, attacking, holding, he was everywhere. The closest the first half came to a second goal was Skalidis' wayward header on 30. Just shy of the hour we scored the second that gave us the aggregate lead. Doukas struck a high corner. The head that met it was Gaetano Montanari's, who chose a fine time to score his first goal on this ground. The teenage sensation joined in with the ecstacy of the crowd as we looked like making Varese's first major final for decades upon decades. Milan were out of it, and the game peetered out until the full time whistle was blown, meaning not only had we beaten Milan for the first time since I've been here, but we are in the Coppa Italia Final, where we will meet Lazio, conquerors of Parma. icon_smile.gif

Vicenza have done well to plant themselves in midtable, but too many defeats and only one draw has seen their season deteriorate when it could have done so much more. After the brilliance of the Milan game we are unchanged.

Vicenza 0

Santos 51

Alexiou 57

A third consecutive clean sheet comes with a third consecutive win in a game where we got stronger after being reduced one man. Vicenza offered something in the first half, surprising me with their exhuberance and style. Ighli Vannucchi did well on the right wing but wasn't supported by many others. On our side, Doukas was yet again on fire. Everything positive came from him. His endless supply of creativity for country mates Alexiou and Skalidis up front were just not taken for a majority of the game, but each man will invariably take one of those. Eleven goal striker Pasquale Foggia shot Vicenza's best effort over the bar close to half time, and then the game looked to have become harder. Daniel Orellana had been booked earlier in the game for a trip, and when he knocked Vannucchi over the second yellow was produced by Claudio Kermek. The back five turned into a back four, with two 17 year olds and an 18 year old led by 35 year old Mario Yepes. In the second half you'd never have guessed we were a man short. Carlos Alberto Viera Dos Santos may have been out of form since deciding to leave, but his goal to open the scoring was sublime to the highest. Setting off in his own half, he beat Rivalta, Torrisi, Vannucchi, Rostirolla and finally Storari in goal with a silky run and electric finish to grace any game. The second goal was slightly less brilliant, but nice in its own way. Cavalcante worked his way down the left, using pace and guile to beat Martino. His cross was well headed in by Alexiou, who is two goals away from equalling his highest total in Italy, and has a while to go. The third was also a cracker. Skalidis was tracked by Chirico as he set off on a bursting run, but the Vicenza defender was left trailing in his wake. Skalidis beat off two more before sliding the ball into the net for another goal. We were amazing after going down to ten men, and Lazio's draw with Napoli helps us even more, as we close the gap on Lazio whilst open the gap back to Napoli. icon_smile.gif

A strange match which could have long term consequences on our push for success. My early plans were scuppered when Pablo Asencio went off injured with what appeared to be a calf strain. Franzese came on and did well. In the eighteenth minute I thought we were ahead when Doukas' lob was headed in by Santos, but a combination of a foul on the keeper and offside ruled the goal out fairly. Alexiou forced a double save from Generoso Rossi as our pressure increased. Just before half time we were dealt another blow, as captain and our most influential player Stilianos Doukas also ceded to injury with a twisted knee. Santi came on, Alexiou took over the captaincy. Five minutes into the second half it became worse, when referee Sergio Dimitrijevic made his mark on the game. Claudio Cavalcante had been booked in the first half for a petulant kick at Vucinic. He mistimed a tackle and had to go, although the first booking was a little harsh in my opinion. We went to a back four for the second time in a week and still looked comfortable. By no means was the eventfulness over. Twenty minutes from time Lecce left back Alessandro Evangelisti jumped a little unfairly with Santos, and was also dismissed. Signor Dimitrijevic wasn't finished. Minutes later Alessio Falanga became embroiled in a heated confrontation with Skalidis and was booked. In frustration, he hammered the ball into the stands and received another yellow, and so he was also off. Ten versus nine, and still 0-0. As the football resumed, we made our advantage count. Santos delivered the perfect corner, and Skalidis glanced the header into the net. icon_smile.gif It crushed Lecce, and we doubled that lead soon enough when Skalidis turned provider for Santos to leather in his 15th of what might be his final season here. Eventful yes, and we close the gap on fourth to one point, whilst extend further away from Napoli behind us.

The appeal I placed on Cavalcante's ban is upheld, on fair grounds. It helps, as we're stretched enough for the trip to Como as it is. Christos Alexiou is the latest to pull out with a damaged shoulder, which means three sidelined weeks.

27.2.11

Como are bottom, and the visit to the Giuseppe Sinigaglia provides an opportunity to try out two more youngsters. Giovanni Lombardi was subject of a bid from Chelsea last year, but he lines up today in his debut. Christian Anselmi has played a few minutes as a UEFA Cup sub, but starts in attack today for the first time.

I'm a little annoyed that we couldn't beat the side at the bottom, but we did well enough considering the players missing. It all looked like it was going according to our plan on ten minutes, when Santos skipped through and finished in his usual definitive style. Just after the half hour however, Como levelled. In Manuel Lorenzini they too had a teenage debutant up front, and his twenty yard shot skimmed through the rain and past Stekelenburg to equalise. Not to be outdone, Christian Anselmi also netted his first ever goal for Varese, heading in fellow debutant Lombardi's corner. It was going OK, as the youngsters were coping admirably. Emiliano Bonazzoli equalised on 53 minutes with a fine effort to mark his 100th Como goal. Skalidis might have won it late, but didn't, and we drew after a great winning run. The goals were the first conceded for 424 minutes - a very nice feat for the defence to have.

Last season it was Olympiakos who eliminated us from the UEFA Cup. A year and a bit on, and we meet them again in a further round. Their squad is weaker, ours stronger, and but for the injuries we are suffering we should go through. I plump for McPhee ahead of Anselmi for his experience, and Orellana returns in defense, leaving Cavalcante free to partner Lombardi in midfield. We need an away goal.

Olympiakos 0

Varese 2

McPhee 50

We needed an away goal, and we got two. icon_smile.gif Olympiakos were a pale shadow of the side that beat us twice last season, but some of that might be due to the improvement we've made. Skalidis' free kick forced a great stop from Manikas in the opening exchanges as my Greek striker looked to make an impression on the watching national team manager. Only Valnei was offering any decent fight in the Olympiakos ranks, frustrating, as he did, our defence. Shortly after the commencement of the second half we scored the all important away goal, and took the lead. Asara whipped in a cross with his left, right onto McPhee's head, and he headed in a sixth goal of a disappointing season for himself personally. Minutes later the lead was doubled. Orellana was involved again. His long ball missed everyone except Santos, who had appeared from nowhere to have a simple one-on-one chance which he buried. It was his fourth goal in as many games, and gives us a fantastic chance of making the Quarter Finals. Our European defence has been exceptional - one goal conceded in seven games is a record I'm proud of. icon_smile.gif

Juventus have had an awful season, and they're far from being safe from relegation right now. Yet their squad is fully capable of world class performances, which we need to be aware of today. Doukas has found fitness in quick time to return to captain the side today. Lombardi steps aside.

After going ahead so early and having a man advantage throughout, we should have taken the win from the game. Saying that, Juve backup keeper Daniele Schiavone was unbeatable. In the very first attack, Santos went clear but was felled by Pegolo. The Bianconeri keeper was dismissed, and Doukas scored another penalty kick. How we never scored an equaliser is beyond all comprehension. Schiavone made great stops from Orellana, Skalidis and Doukas at one point or another, and as hard as we tried nothing would beat the 23 year old stopper. With time ticking away Juventus did what they always seem to do against us, scored late. The loose ball fell kindly to Simone Inzaghi, who sent a rifling effort past the helpless Stekelenburg, icon_frown.gif Anselmi came on to add the physical approach, but to no avail, as we failed to take advantage of Lazio's slip at Bologna. We'll just have to beat them in the League next week instead. icon_biggrin.gif

The inevitable eventually happened, even if we took the long route around it. Olympiakos keeper Manikas was busy right from the off, when stopping Skalidis' snap half volley. The same man missed a header midway through a first half which failed to do anything. The second half started better, but it was still the same story of Manikas preventing Skalidis from scoring. Just after the hour we went behind, which is a very strange feeling for us, as it doesn't happen too often any more. Giorgios Anthoulis swung a nice cross into the area, which was expertly guided towards goal by Sotiris Karamanos, who also scored against us last season. It's also a rare goal conceded in Europe this season for our part. Anthoulis, who had claimed the assist, was then sent off for shoving Cavalcante to the floor in anger at a tackle. With time running out Santos proved his worth once more with yet another stunning effort. He span past Kiriazis before unleashing an effort into the top corner to make it eighteen for the season. The late winner was also a Brazilian effort. Santos crossed this time, and arriving on the line at the back post was Claudio Cavalcante to head in his first of the season and the winner. icon_smile.gif We're into the last eight of the UEFA Cup, where we'll join Charleroi, Feyenoord, Man Utd, Partizan, Shakhtar-2 Donetsk, FC KƃĀøbenhavn, and Lazio. Some really tough games are possible, but that's the business end of Europe for you.

Part one of the soon to be long running saga against Lazio. They're a very good side, and we know just what is facing us. Anselmi returns up front to add a lively physical element to our game.

Lazio 1

Ayala 45

Varese 0

It's our first League defeat since mid November, but the major problem is that it leaves us six points behind Lazio in the table. Mancini's men will also have the upper hand in the next meeting, as they now have the win under their belts. That said, we dominated the whole outing, without scoring that one goal. On the half hour mark the first opening of the game arrived. A goalmouth scramble occurred in the Lazio penalty box, but neither Skalidis or Doukas could beat Fabio Da Re. A few minutes later Anselmi struck a neat and tidy volley that was parried well by the Lazio captain. On half time Lazio took the lead with a rare attack and much against the run of play. Sam Dalla Bona whipped a low cross, and Marcelo Ayala stooped to head in the goal which turned out to be the winner. Cavalcante forced the best save from Da Re on 58 minutes, as his header forced the goalkeeper into a jumping finger-tipped save. Nothing was going for us, and now we have a lot of work to do (and a little luck to ask) in order to make up the six point difference Lazio have on us now. A disappointing day in Rome. icon_frown.gif

We couldn't have done it much better! They played pretty much the same side that beat us at the weekend, but we were a class apart tonight. In the thirteenth minute Doukas' deep corner was headed back across goal by Skalidis, and Santos arrived to volley emphatically past Da Re. Now Lazio started to attack, and a similar volley from Rabito only found the stands. After half an hour we doubled the lead, and in the process doubled the away goals. Cavalcante nodded Montanari's ball into Bojinov's path, and after settling, the Bulgarian rifled us into a 2-0 lead. We had been all over them, and their UEFA Cup dream was starting to fade. Lazio looked a little better in the second half, but not by much, as our defence was looking as solid as I know it to be. A little over fifteen minutes from time we wrapped the game, and possibly the tie, up. Santos again found time and space when he shouldn't have, and he dispatched his 20th of the season, and his 80th Varese goal. Mario Yepes went off injured and our defence was weakened temporarily, but Andrea Rabito had what might have been a crucial consolation disallowed. Our win should see us into the Semi Finals, which is fantastic. But nothing is being taken for granted.

We beat Milan in the Coppa Italia last time they visited the Franco Ossola, and we'll have to repeat the feat to maintain contact with those in Champions League places. Christos Alexiou is finally fit to return to the fold, but Yepes' injury leaves a hole in the defence. Throughout the week I've discussed the situation with my assistant Gabi Batistuta and head coach Giorgios Pomaski, and they suggest Greg Lewis plays. He hasn't featured in the first team for over a year, but I have little option otherwise. So Lewis is in for a big match.

Well, we've only gone and done it again! icon_biggrin.gif After years of struggling against Milan, we seem to have turned the tide and done our Champions League hopes the world of good, whilst seriously impairing Milan's title hopes. We played well - not as good as we can, but we did enough. Stilianos Doukas struck an early free kick which tested Abbiati, who was named Man of the Match come full time (speaking volumes of our play). Next it was Stekelenburg's turn to make a save, from a Luca Toni header that he couldn't hold onto but pushed over the goal. Gaetano Montanari caused temporary worry as he looked like coming off injured, but he battled on bravely, and we needed him. His intervention on half time caused Joe Cole to hammer an attempt over. Daniel Orellana started the second half with a crunching tackle on Andriy Shevchenko that left the Ukrainian in no doubt as to who was the boss on the day. My Argentinian was a colossus. Stekelenburg wasn't far behind, as Cole finally got one on target, only for the Dutch number one to pull off a cracking save. In the 65th minute the goal arrived. Doukas found Santos, who passed Alexiou's way in. The returning Greek hitman sent in a beautiful chip perfectly over Abbiati and into the net! icon_smile.gif Milan pushed back at us immediately, but they couldn't break through the back five and Cavalcante, who did a great job on Cole. Shevchenko wasted their last chance with a header, but we ended up with the points and another win in style.

Tonight we face Lazio again, in the second leg of our UEFA Cup Quarter Final. We have a 3-0 advantage from the first leg - all away goals too - and failure tonight would have to be in the shape of a dramatic collapse. Varese win 5-2 on aggregate

We're into the last four, but not without a cost. The match was end to end attacking football, which I suspected it would be, as Lazio needed goals. That suited us down to the ground, because our style is made for counter attacking. The scoring started after 21 minutes. Stilianos Doukas took his umpteenth assist of the season when sliding a ball onto Skalidis' foot, and after making room he scored for the first time in Europe for us. He almost doubled that immediately with a volley that shook Da Re, but no more. Alexiou put a header horribly wide soon after, but came close with another on the brink of half time. Early in the second half we were unlucky not to increase the advantage when Skalidis headed Doukas' corner onto the bar. Things then went bad. Denis Pavesi sprinted onto Stankovic's overhit pass, but reached it ahead of Stekelenburg. There was contact, but the fall made up the mind of the referee to send off Stekelenburg. Sergio Girardi couldn't stop Pavesi equalising, but we were very much still in control. Lazio really turned the screw, but couldn't find a way through a back four that always looks strong when reduced to ten men. We made sure of qualification twenty minutes from time. Cavalcante and Santos sprung a counter attack, spearheaded by Skalidis. Once he got away from Martinelli there was no mistaking what was going to happen. He slammed the ball in off the post to put us through. With little time remaining Pavesi matched Skalidis' double to give Lazio a share of the spoils on the night, but the tie is ours. I never thought I'd say this, but Varese are in the UEFA Cup Semi Finals!

We wait with eager anticipation our Semi Final opponents. Lunchtime arrives, along with news we are to play FC KƃĀøbenhavn. They're a good side, but not unbeatable. We need to make the home leg count, as we'll travel to Denmark in the second leg.

Back to league action after an international break, and Parma visit us. They've been contesting top spot all season and are one of the very best sides, so we need to be at our best to get the points we need to keep on Lazio's tail. Excluding the last twenty minutes, we won this at a canter. We should have been 4-0 up at half time, but for some dodgy officiating and mistimed runs. The game started like a typical Serie A game of the early 1990's - neither side did anything of note attacking wise. The first shot at goal was Alexiou's opener. Doukas opened the door for his compatriot to hit a fierce shot past Luciani to make it an even twenty for the season. Fifteen minutes later we thought we had a second. Doukas crossed again, and Santos headed into the net only to be prevented for offside. We got the second just before half time from the penalty spot. Santos was felled in the penalty area, and Doukas sent Luciani the wrong way. We still found time to have another goal disallowed before half time. Asara swung a dangerous cross into the penalty area and Alexiou headed into the net for what he thought was another goal. He was offside - just. We still remianed in control as Parma were strangely subdued. They did liven up, and Mutu showed what they were still capable of with a rasping shot wide. Slowly but surely the Gialloblu increased the tempo as time ran out on them. Stekelenburg was in good nick and Doukas was running things from the midfield. Unfortunately he picked up another yellow card and will miss a game through suspension. Parma got their goal with seventeen minutes left on the clock. Brighi's cross eveaded all except Mutu, and the Romanian tapped in. Things became tense as it looked like the disallowed goals would come back to haunt us. Especially when Adriano and Diego ForlƃĀ”n combined for the Uruguayan to stab an effort only a stroke of paint wide. We did hold on, and with Lazio losing in the Rome derby, we move within a point of their fourth place. icon_smile.gif

It's probably a phrase I use all too often, but tonight's UEFA Cup Semi Final first leg is possibly the biggest game in the history of the club. FC KƃĀøbenhavn are the visitors tonight, and based on the scout reports I know that they'll look to soak up what they can and try to grab a goal through their most talented player, Morten Rasmussen. Stekelenburg is suspended for us, so Girardi covers with his capable attributes. Todisco can return too.

We couldn't be closer to the UEFA Cup Final if we tried! icon_biggrin.gif This gives us a fantastic position to take to Denmark in a fortnight's time, and it's all thanks to a fantastic team performance. We opened the scoring within twenty minutes, which is exactly what the visiting side would have wanted to avoid. Stilianos Doukas delivered a demon of a free kick to which Anastasios Skalidis flicked a header past Rune Pedersen. To my delight and that of the capacity 15,000 crowd, the lead was doubled in quick time. Montanari and Yepes built the play well along the right, and the Colombian's cross was instinctively volleyed into the corner by Christos Alexiou to take him to a Varese-best 21 goals for the season (to date). If Santos' shot two minutes later hadn't have thumped off the crossbar we might have been home and dry. Early in the second half the worst thing that could have happened did. FC KƃĀøbenhavn nabbed an away goal. Allan Sand headed the ball into Mads KjƃĀøller Westh's path, and he beat Girardi to give them a crucial lifeline which just keeps them alive in the tie. In our attempt to respond and force the issue further, Doukas had a header cleared off the line. It wasn't to be long until we restored a two goal lead. Doukas, as ever, was at the heart of the action. He gave Asara the ball to cross, and Alexiou rose to head in his seventh goal in Europe this season to move level with Sidney Govou at the top of the UEFA Cup scoring charts. Skalidis is behind him but he too made it two on the night with the fourth. Doukas' cross was perfect for him, and his header was sublimely converted. Doukas has now 23 assists for the season - a fabulous tally. We just need a strong performance in Denmark to make it to he UEFA Cup Final! icon_cool.gif Who'd have thunk it?

In all the draw was disappointing, but Lazio's home defeat to Inter moves us into the Champions League places on goal difference (which would count for nothing at the end of the season - a playoff would be required). Youngster Corrado De Luca was sent off very early on by referee Alessio Grskovic for a shove on Todisco, and we should have taken hold of the game. For a short time that was the case. Perugia keeper Martino Caccia did well to stop Skalidis' curling free kick, but Claudio Cavalcante was first to the rebound to beat the defender on the line and put us 1-0 ahead. We were then dealt a cruel blow. Falling awkwardly, Skalidis had to be helped off with what turned out to be damaged ankle ligaments, which means we'll miss him for a month, and he'll be in a race to be fit for the UEFA Cup Final (should we reach it). Perugia took advantage and equalised quickly. Giacomo De Simone beat Montanari on the left and drilled a high cross which Mirko Ferraroni headed like a missile past Stekelenburg. We weren't at our best, and no matter how well McPhee did in attempting to take the game on his shoulders, we just didn't get a goal. Santos was so poor I was forced to substitute him for one of the first times since he joined here. He did clip the crossbar with a rare attempt on goal before Dobek replaced him. Still, we've broken into the top four, and fourth looks like the highest we'll reach with Parma eleven points away and just eighteen to get. If we can stay unbeaten I'd fancy us to stay where we are now, but improvements must be made on todays game.

We're halfway to our first major trophy! For a long, long while it looked as if we would go into the second leg with a deficit to make up. Our slow start was duly punished via Alessandro Pellicori's diving header, with Stekelenburg in particular out of position. My choice of Gulessarian up front was not the best decision, as he looked second rate and not involved in the play. Cavalcante drew a save from Da Re with our best chance of the first half. McPhee came on for Gulessarian at half time with the instruction to get us out of the mess we'd put ourselves in. I knew he would drive us onwards, and so it proved. Shortly after the hour Doukas put the ball into the air for what would turn out to be yet another assist. McPhee aggressively drove to the front and headed the ball into the corner. It was also a crucial away goal, which will help when the second leg is played at the Franco Ossola. We actually started to play something attractive, and Lazio were powerless to stop us. Part of that was down to us becoming used to them after a number of recent clashes. Andrea Rabito snatched a late chance that could have won the game for the Bianconeri, but it was us who took the game in dramatic style. Montanari was felled thirty yards out at an angle. Doukas delivered the ball to the near post with venom, and it cleared everything except the back of the net! icon_biggrin.gif The captain had led by example, and given us a crucial lead for the second leg. It was sheer drama at its peak.

In a cruel turn of events, Daniel Orellana will miss the final 'Final' after picking up one too many yellow cards. icon_frown.gif He'll be there to cheer us on.

One of the tougher games in the run in will be the visit of Bologna. Despite their poor standing, Ligkos and Ronaldinho are superb assets to have. Cavalcante is injured, so I give Mateusz Dobek the job of pairing up with Doukas in the heart of the side.

Varese 2

Alexiou 31

Santos 90

Bologna 1

Ronaldinho 69

We stay in fourth place with a last gasp winner which sunk a Bologna side who threatened to cause us problems, especially in the second half. Dobek was doing very well out of position, and gave me food for thought about Santos' position when he vacates it at the end of the season. The Pole had the first attempt on 24 minutes, causing Pompei to dive low to parry the attempt. He was at the heart of the first goal too. His trickery gave McPhee some space, and it was his cross which Alexiou headed into the top corner. Bologna emerged from their shell, and Ligkos gave Stekelenburg good reason to drop down and stop his shot. Manuele Blasi started to pull their strings, and his rocket of a shot was stopped well just after half time by my goalkeeper. We couldn't get out of our own third of the pitch, and eventually paid for it. Blasi did well to create an opening for Ronaldinho, who headed into the net to level the scores at 1-1. If anyone was going to win it would have been Bologna, but the defensive resilience we showed was rewarded late in the day. Santos may be leaving, but he still puts his heart into everything. When all looked finished, he set off on a mazy run, beating defenders left, right and centre before he scored a scorching goal to give us three crucial points as the season comes to a head.

It's official. As of the end of the season Carlos Alberto Viera Dos Santos will no longer be a Varese player. He has signed a pre-contract with Vicenza after five seasons here. He is our record all time goalscorer, which for a midfielder is a huge status to behold. We'll miss him, but hopefully he can shoot us on to a great end of season before setting off for a new challenge.

In Denmark's Parken stadium we are 90 minutes away from making the UEFA Cup Final. FC KƃĀøbenhavn have a 4-1 deficit to make up from the first leg in Italy, and all we really need is one goal. Cavalcante is back and fit to resume in midfield, but Dobek stays in the side up front, with McPhee dropping out.

Varese win 6-2 on aggregate

We're there! icon_cool.gif If somebody had said to me way back on that fateful day back in 2001 that in ten years Varese would be in a UEFA Cup Final I think I may have had them committed. Exactly nine years ago we were losing to Pistoise at home and looking like being relegated. The performance in Denmark tonight was fantastic. The home side were clearly up for the game knowing what was required. Unfortunately for them, we were also coming to fight. After twenty minutes Stilianos Doukas delivered a cross to which Mateusz Dobek headed in to score his first goal of the season. Five minutes later the start of the season hit the ten goal mark. Doukas lined up a free kick and curled it wonderously into the top corner. With a 6-1 lead and two away goals we could really afford to relax as the 5000 visiting Varese fans started to celebrate in typical Italian tifosi fashion. The second half whizzed by with nothing happening for half an hour, as the hosts were dead and buried. With five minutes to go Orellana gave away a penalty which Morten Rasmussen put away, but it was all too late for them. Gordon Zammit Tabona blew the final whistle to signify that we are in the UEFA Cup Final. icon_cool.gif

Our opponents in just under a month's time will be Yugoslavian side Partizan, who knocked out Feyenoord on penalties after two 0-0 draws. They've also beaten Real Madrid and Club Brugge, so they're no pushovers. The venue - Wembley Stadium, London. I'll be returning home to the city where I was born in hope of securing the biggest win this club would ever know. 90,000 fans - a good proportion of which could be Varese's, will make it an unforgettable occasion.

Away to Venezia is not one of the games I'd have wanted in a run in. We have a poor record there, and we need to win to keep up the push for the Champions League. I stay unchanged from the UEFA Cup Semi.

Venezia 1

Yepes 55 og

Varese 0

Only our second league defeat in six months, but now Lazio will have a minimum of a three point lead when everything sorts itself out. It was cruel that Mario Yepes' own goal had to be the deciding factor on the day, as otherwise he was exceptional. Venezia waltzed through us for most of the game, and we were always second best. Mauro Camoranesi's marauding dribbles on the right wing were keeping Asara busy, and aerial deliveries to Bilic and Natali kept the back three on their toes. We still had the capacity to cause trouble, as Doukas and Alexiou showed when combining for a decent chance halfway through the first half. How Mate Bilic didn't grab a first half goal is a question he'll still be asking himself. He ran us ragged and in truth deserved a reward. We nearly stole a lead on half time as Asara thumped a header that was magnificently beaten out by Cristian Rocca. The deciding goal was harsh. Rosario La Marca was given the ball by Leandro CufrƃĀ©. In an attempt to block, Yepes deflected the ball into the net. It was the only way Stekelenburg was to be beaten. Montanari almost equalled the game late on, but his shot dragged wide. We deserved to lose, but we really couldn't have afforded to.

Salernitana could really throw a spanner in our works today in the Arechi. They're very very good, but only mid table. I decide to name an unchanged side in hope of getting what has to be a win.

Salernitana 1

Once again we pulled out a win when it mattered most and things looked as if they were against us. An early goal was a brilliant boost, with Alexiou proving the hero. Gaetano Montanari skipped along the wing and fired a cross towards the Greece international. He flicked it into the far corner. The home side dominated for a short while, and LeƃĀ³n hit a free kick that was superbly stopped by Stekelenburg. Our second also came at a great time, just as we were under our most pressure. Again it was Montanari who set it up. Another near post cross was rewarded with a goal. Santos sneaked in and volleyed into the net from about four yards - an unstoppable range. Shortly before the third goal came Santos went close to scoring another as his shot hit the outside of the post and flew away. A corner followed, and Doukas' delivery found Alexiou's clear head, and in went a third. 3-0 before half an hour was brilliant, as we could relax and make sure of the win. Salernitana found that useful as it allowed them to press on. Stekelenburg made a number of outstanding stops, and Montanari had possibly his best game ever. The defence were almost perfect, but for Paolo De Crescenzo's injury time consolation. A clean sheet would have been nice, but we won, and close the gap on Lazio, who could only draw 1-1 at Vicenza.

The second leg of the Coppa Italia Final is where the real drama comes into play. We have a 2-1 lead from the first leg in Rome, and just need to keep Lazio at bay enough to hold out. As a testament to the importance of the game, Andrea Todisco plays through the pain barrier to keep the defence strong in the absence of Orellana. He is suspended and covered by Hyypia. Skalidis isn't fully fit but will start this big game.

Full Time, aggregate 2-2: Varese win by virtue of more away goals

Our first real piece of silverware has arrived! icon_smile.gif We've won the Serie C1/A Championship, the C1 Super Cup, and the Inter-Toto Cup, but finally we have our hands on a respected trophy. We also chose to do it the hard way. We were outplayed, and Lazio must have thought they had the game won, but my defenders were phenomenal, especially Hyypia and Todisco (who was injured). After 23 minutes I thought we might have blown it by going 1-0 down. A deep cross found Denis Pavesi, who looped a header back over Stekelenburg into the corner. If we were to score a goal it would have come from Santos. Ten minutes later Santos dribbled and slammed a shot over the bar. When we looked at our shakiest, Hyypia and Yepes showed their experience in guiding the younger players through a tough spell. The last half an hour of the match was pure Biancocelesti pressure. Pellicori almost sunk us with a late shot which Stekelenburg did well to stop. We broke away in injury time to keep the ball as far away from our goalmouth as possible, and the referee blew time to signify we had won the Coppa Italia! icon_cool.gif Our defence had been fabulous throughout. The crowd went delirious, and the celebrations could start. Stilianos Doukas was presented with the trophy in front of the Curva Nord, and the party began! We've got a trophy, and hopefully we can continue with the UEFA Cup. icon_smile.gif

Back to League action, and a visit from lowly Torino. We simply have to win in order to keep up the pressure on Lazio. Skalidis is rested to be 100% for the most important matches, so McPhee gets another start. Orellana returns at the back.

Varese 1

Doukas 15

Torino 0

A thoroughly professional performance was required, and we gave it. Little to my knowledge, Lecce were doing us a huge favour in Rome. Torino are poor, and it's little wonder we've sunk them to the level of near certain relegation. Their only attempt at goal came in the third minute. Sommese's cross was hammered by Diego Campo straight into the goalpost. After a quarter of an hour we took the lead, as my captain led by example. Days after lifting the Coppa Italia, Doukas drove through unchallenged before drilling low and hard into Sorrentino's bottom right hand corner. Doukas was in fine form, and almost scored two more before half time. Early doors after the restart, McPhee showed great close control and a volley to hit the post. The match started to peeter out as both sides accepted the result was going to be a Varese win. We completed a first clean sheet in nearly two months, and as Lecce held Lazio to a 1-1 draw in the Olimpico, we have a chance to overtake them in midweek with our game in hand. This was our last home game of the season, and we also took the opportunity to show our appreciation to the brilliant following we've had all season. It also meant that for the first time since our promotion from Serie C1/A, we've gone a whole league season unbeaten at home. icon_smile.gif

Team: Stekelenburg, Yepes, Orellana, Todisco, Montanari, Asara, Cavalcante, DoukasĀ©, Santos, McPhee, Alexiou

The last day of the season is shaping up to be very dramatic. We visit Napoli in three days knowing that if we can win (and that will be hard) then we hold our own fate going into the last day. Two wins will give us a Champions League place. The problem is, the last game is a visit to Roma. They've had a poor season but have a fantastic side capable of destroying us. They might, however, want us to win so as to deny cross town rivals Lazio a Champions League spot. Lazio are unlikely to drop points at already relegated Como, so everything depends on us picking up six points over the next week.

The first part of the must win six pointer double. We've lost on our last two visits to Naples, and their eighth place in the league presents a formidable force. Skalidis is back 100% fit and raring to go.

One down, one to go. After 33 games we hold a single point lead over Lazio, and we go into the weekend's visit to Roma knowing a win will secure us a Champions League place. Today was easier than I'd previously expected. Skalidis was awesome on his return to the side, as he led by example with a couple of fine finishes. Santos had the first opening of the game, driving just over as he sliced a shot. Manolo Pestrin came close for the home side with a snap effort that hit the side of Stekelenburg's net. He came close again with a long range piledriver on 32 minutes. Alexiou then tested Coppola with a header as the game became a little stretched for the first time. It suited us, and we took full advantage minutes later. Skalidis picked up the ball out wide on the left. He got past Pestrin and Lodesani with almost immortal strength before he was able to cooly slot the ball into the corner. Pestrin came close again to scoring but we led at the break. An early goal in the second half gave us a cushion to play with. An overhit Montanari cross was sent back over by Alexiou, and Skalidis met it with a header to make it 2-0. With a quarter of an hour remaining he came close to a treble, but Coppola kept his attempt at bay. A little while later Mosca hit the post for Napoli, who sensed a need for points. As time ran out, we secured three absolutely vital points. Doukas curled a powerful shot at goal which was only parried into Santos' path. What might be his final goal for the club was an easy tap in to make it 23 for the season - a career best for the Brazilian. To my disappointment Roberto Stellone was able to head a consolation in at the death, but all I know now is that a win on Sunday will put us in with the elite. Not easy by any means of the imagination though.

The final day, and the most important of the season, and perhaps my tenure here. A win in Rome against Roma will seure a place in the European Cup for the first time in the history of this club. Anything less, and we'll have to hope Como can do us a favour against Lazio. They may be rivals but I see Roma inadvertently helping Lazio out by. The preparation for the match is quite tense, with everything riding on this match. An hour before the game I inform everyone of the side - it's the same eleven who played last week. I also tell them that this is in our hands, and not to worry about events in Como. Doukas leads the side out for the first of two massive games for this club this week.

Varese will be in the European Cup next season!!! icon_biggrin.gif (well, the preliminaries anyway). Against all the seeming odds, we came out victorious in Rome against a Roma side who have talent in abundance. That said, I think we've proved we also have enough talent this season, as the final standings will show. Roma had the better of the opening period of play, with Alex being the main protagonist in the play. An early header soared way over, and a free kick in the 24th minute shaved the top of the goalnet. Our first chance followed soon after, when Skalidis broke free but couldn't keep a shot down. In injury time we were dealt a massive blow when Daniel Orellana was booked for the second time in a matter of minutes for two seperate and innocuous fouls. He was sent off by Antonio Giannoccaro, and we had to play half the game with a man deficit. Yet whenever we've had the defence reduced to a back four, it has looked as strong, maybe stronger. We started the second half in fine fashion, and deservedly took the lead a minute before the hour. Doukas' battling work was rewarded with a ball releasing Santos. The Brazilian kept composed and put us ahead with a subtle finish. With the lead came a new optimism, that we had Roma where we wanted them. Our following away support also did their best to inform anyone and everyone in the ground of events in Como (even though the scoreline meant they would be irrelevant). They became even less relevant nine minutes later. Emre lost possession out on the right wing. Asara whipped an early ball in, and Santos headed in a second of the game and 25th of the season. He chose almost the perfect way to finish his time here with two absolutely crucial goals for the future of the club. Perfect would have been a hat-trick. The game was up for Roma. Cavenaghi headed a couple of tame efforts which Stekelenburg stopped well, but he did get a consolation late in the day with a thumping header. It didn't matter. Seconds later the final whistle was blown on the Serie A season, and we finished in the Champions League qualification places. We're in with the big boys! icon_biggrin.gif

I'm back home in London for the first time in my managerial career for a football game. Wembley and the surrounding area is buzzing with anticipation for tonight's UEFA Cup Final between ourselves and Yugoslavian side Partizan of Belgrade. The sheer volume of Varese fans who have made the trip is surprising, as it shows me we would easily be able to fill a bigger stadium than the 15,000 we have at the Franco Ossola currently. The pre-match entertainment is the usual mix of colour and poor music (this year's offering from S Club 8 - formerly S Club juniors icon_redface.gif ). It's tense, but it's the biggest game we've ever been involved in - and the surroundings of this fabulous new Wembley stadium make a cauldron of atmosphere almost unrivalled.

We line up at full strength, and wearing a special commemorative kit for the occasion. Stilianos Doukas leads out the side for the day of destiny.

What a fabulous end to an amazing season. To be able to call ourselves UEFA Cup Champions is something I never thought I'd hear. My side were fabulous for the entire game. From start to finish everyone gave their all, and we're rewarded for it. The first chance of the game fell to the feet of the mercurial Doukas. A short advance and low shot went just wide, but signalled the intention. Ivica Iliev then shot just wide for the Yugoslavs, who also looked to score early. Next up was Alexiou with a stinging volley which yielded a corner. A scramble following the delivery resulted in a loose ball falling to the feet of Claudio Cavalcante. My former captain hammered a shot high into the roof of the net to give us a lead. Half the crowd roared, but I kept calm, telling the side to keep composed. After all, it was still early. As if to mark my words, Partizan hit back and Iliev rocked the crossbar with a header. If we thought that was an escape we had another thing coming. Danko Djokic escaped Todisco's hold and slammed a near post shot in past Stekelenburg. They thought they were level, but Djokic had been flagged offside - much to our relief. To make things even worse still, Skalidis surged through and was fouled in the penalty area. The spot kick was given and scored, as always, by Doukas. That gave us even more optimism, and looked to have crushed the Partizan players, who, like us, were in a first major final. Doukas almost scored again straight away with a stunning drive just over. Iliev also hit a similar attempt close to half time which went way wide.

Stanko Djordjevic opened the second half with a volley which called Stekelenburg into action, and then Ilic put a free kick wide. Partizan became more desperate as time ticked away from them, whilst my defence was proving rock solid. Danko Lazovic's injury time shot paled into nothing as the last action of the match was seen. The referee blew full time and the celebrations began. We have won the UEFA Cup! icon_cool.gif It's a special moment for everyone, but the most moving moment was still to arrive. Both goals were scored by players who have captained the club this season. As the official captain, Stilianos Doukas should have been the one to lift the huge 33lb trophy. Unbeknownst to me, the players had planned to push club coach Edoardo Gorini to the front to lift the trophy. Gorini, a former club stalwart and legend of over 500 appearances here, has done more than maybe anyone for this club ever, and the players recognised that with an amazing show of affection. So, in a strange twist, Edoardo Gorini lifted the UEFA Cup in a blaze of fireworks and a shower of red and white ribbons, and the celebrations kicked off! icon_smile.gif

A year on from his last debacle, Daniel Orellana has once again apparently spoken out about signing for Napoli. Why he woul want to, when we'll be in the Champions League next season, is beyond me. He is warned about his future conduct, and he might be one I could sell to keep harmony up.

2.6.11

As usual, I'll write my season review....

And what a season it was! The final outcome of a UEFA Cup, a Coppa Italia, and a Champions League qualification spot was beyond my wildest dreams at the start of the season. I felt we could have challenged for real honours at the start of the season, but we were that same old Varese of old - too many goals conceded and not winning the important games. The defeat in early November to Parma saw a shift in the way things were run. The change to a more secure and defensive formation was combined with the arrival of Anastasios Skalidis, and we never looked back. Just three defeats followed in the six months since, and we were rewarded with one heck of a season.

The defence has been more secure than ever. Maarten Stekelenburg, for the first time since arriving in Italy, conceded less goals than games played. This was mainly to do with the new look back five. Mario Yepes arrived last August with the aim of shoring up a leaky back line, and how he did. His experience was vital to the development of the three young prospects who were in the Academy this time last year. Domenico Asara, Andrea Todisco, and Gaetano Montanari all played their first full seasons, and now one is a full international and two others are Under-21 talents. Todisco and Montanari performed at a plateau way above what anyone expected of them. I can't praise them highly enough. Despite his arrogant and disruptive tendencies, Daniel Orellana had a renaissance after November, playing the best football of his career.

Stilianos Doukas took the captaincy after Sami Hyypia and Claudio Cavalcante decided against the role. How he flourished. To think I considered selling him last summer. A year on, he's scored twelve goals and made an amazing twenty-eight icon_eek.gif assists! He has been the fulcrum of the side, and a magnificent part of a side which is taking shape to become even better. When we needed someone, he was always the first there, giving 150%. Claudio Cavalcante found his niche as the defensive midfielder at last, whilst Roberto Franzese and Pablo Asencio did well when required. Lest we forget, Christian Santi came in and performed heroics on the rare occasion he was needed.

Special mention to Carlos Alberto Viera Dos Santos. He is a Varese legend, and I am so sad to see him leaving the club soon. Daniel Orellana played a role in his decision to leave, with the Brazilian citing 'irrepairable differences' as the reason. Still, he gave his all, and 25 goals is a new high for him in one season. He scored 96 goals for Varese in 206 games, which for a midfielder is a tally worthy of the highest praise. We'll miss him, and Vicenza have themselves a real asset (he'll rip Serie B apart).

Christos Alexiou might not have been the focal point of the attack in terms of media adulation, but I appreciate all he's done this season. When we needed a striker to take the bull by the proverbial horns and rescue us, it was Alexiou who took on that mantle. He too scored 25 this season, a Varese best for him. 89 goals for him in Italy now - surely he'll overtake Santos' record sooner rather than later, and he'll deserve every moment of it. Partnering him this season was Anastasios Skalidis. I tried to sign him years ago, and this season the dream was realised. He took me by surprise in how quickly he integrated into the squad and Italy in general. He has a great chance of being named Serie A Player of the Season, as everyone has been waxing lyrical about his 18 goals and overall brilliance. When they were needed, McPhee, Bojinov, and Dobek all did the business too - which is all I can ask for.

The UEFA Cup Final was a perfect way to end the season. We can now look forward to a possible lucrative Champions League campaign and the experience that will bring, whilst to build on this season we'll need to mount a serious title challenge. We have the structure in place, and things are certainly on the up after a fantastic twelve months! icon_cool.gif

Review of Europe....

Inter returned to the summit of Italy with a dramatic last day title winner to pip rivals Milan. The Rossoneri only needed a win away at Lecce to retain the Scudetto, but they went down 1-0. Simultaneously, Inter scored to beat Bologna by the same scoreline to leapfrong Ancelotti's side and return to the position atop Serie A. After a fantastic league campaign Parma dropped into a disappointing third, whilst Varese can claim the 'Team of the Season' tag with a fantastic fourth place. The relegation battle also went to the last day, with a sequence of dramatic events seeing Como, Torino, Vicenza, and Brescia go down - but if things had been different Juventus might have suffered the most humiliating of drops. Coming into the top flight are Chievo, Verona, Cagliari, and Palermo.

Liverpool still dominate in England, with a fifth straight title win - the first side to ever achieve that feat in the top division. A ten point margin was the eventual winning total over second placed Millwall, who keep on progressing in style. Sunderland and Newcastle make up the European Cup spots, pipping Leeds and Birmingham to the top four. Disappointment for Fulham, Bolton, and Blackburn, who will all play First Division football next season. Of the three sides replacing them, two will experience Premiership football for the first time. Bristol City come up as Champions, and Brentford won the Playoff Final. Charlton make a regular trip to the big league again.

In Spain Barcelona made it a Perfect Ten as they continued to dominate the La Liga title with a tenth straight title. Perhaps less convincing than in previous years, they still managed to win the crown by eight clear points from AtlƃĀ©tico Madrid, with Betis trailing in third. Mallorca did well to make fourth place theirs, whilst Real Madrid sacked Vicente Del Bosque for a measly seventh place. As expected, Elche, Albacete and Osasuna go down, and three quality sides return to replace them. Sevilla, Zaragoza, and Real Sociedad will all be assets to La Primera Liga.

After four seasons away, Lorient returned to the summit in France with a tense title victory by the eventual margin of three points from a very impressive and unlucky Lens side. Lyon, clearly missing the goals of the departed Javier Portillo, only managed third and a Champions League qualifying spot. Toulouse, Amiens, and Rennes are relegated; St-Ettiene, Le Havre and Lille return to familiar surroundings.

Finally to Germany where Hansa Rostock won the Bundesliga for the first time in their history. Managed by Armin Veh and shot to glory by the amazing Dimitar Berbatov, Rostock easily deserved the title. Leverkusen made second, and it's now ten years since third placed FC Bayern won the title they so dominated for seemingly decades. Relegation was sorted a long time before the end of the season, with Borussia MGB, KƃĀ¶ln, and Osnabruck suffering the bad break. Fate dealt a better hand to Bremen, Frankfurt and Essen, who go up.

Lazio approach with a bid of ƂĀ£4.6m for Daniel Orellana. Since it's written into his contract he can leave for that fee, I accept, but not too reluctantly, as he's upset the squad too often, and I can replace him - if he decides to leave.

5.6.11

The deal has been finalised, and Orellana will leave the club in July. He's a cracking player, but I can find someone less disruptive and more committed.

6.6.11

Once again it's the time where Awards are given out icon_smile.gif

FIFA World Player of the Year - Javier Saviola (Barcelona)

World Footballer of the Year - Javier Saviola (Barcelona)

Serie A Manager of the Year - Philip Rolfe (Varese)

Serie A Player of the Year - Anastasios Skalidis (Varese)

Serie A Young Player of the Year - Nicola Vigano (Venezia)

Serie A Defender of the Year - LƃĀŗcio (Milan)

Serie A Goalkeeper of the Year - Maarten Stekelenburg (Varese)

Serie A Top Goalscorer - Manolis Ligkos (Bologna, 20 goals)

Serie A Italian Player of the Year - Massimo Marcucci (Como)

Serie A Foreign Player of the Year - Manolis Ligkos (Bologna)

I have to say I'm honoured to have been named as the Serie A Manager of the Season. After a fantastic year it's the perfect way to round it off. Skalidis fully deserves his Player of the Year Award, and Stekelenburg is now officially the best keeper in Italy, after winning the award three years running. In the Team of the Season, Stekelenburg and Skalidis earn starts, with Doukas and Santos subs.

16.6.11

More Awards;

European Footballer of the Year - Alberto Gilardino (Parma)

European Goalkeeper of the Year - Sebastien Frey (Inter)

European Defender of the Year - Wilfried Bouma (Barcelona)

European Midfielder of the Year - Mattia Rossini (Inter)

European Striker of the Year - Alberto Gilardino (Parma)

19.6.11

Anastasios Skalidis picks up another award in his multitude of trophies as the fans vote him as their Player of the Season. Aniello Manganelli also announces that plans to expand the Franco Ossola stadium have had to be adjourned as the local planning authorities have put any plans on hold. That's bad, as if we want to become a big name club we need to have a strong fan base, and 15,000 is way too small. Although it suits us, we might need the revenue from a big ground.

21.6.11

It feels as if we haven't ever been away, as the new season's fixtures are sent to me on holiday in a sunny location. We start with Chievo, before a Rome double against Roma and then Lazio (I've had enough of them icon_biggrin.gif ). Preparations will begin for the new season sooner than usual as we have Champions League qualification to get through.

1.7.11

Today marks a sad day for the club. Legendary performer Carlos Alberto Viera Dos Santos has left to join Vicenza, a new challenge in his career. If things don't work out, he'll always be welcome back here. Daniel Orellana has left after three seasons and 114 appearances, and for a ƂĀ£4.5m profit. A nice piece of business, and we can look to strengthen with the fee. icon_smile.gif

I am a little perturbed that we only now have 33 players at the club. I'm working on a few deals, and noting the talent base we have in the form of the academy, but I'm hoping we can bulk up the squad to 40 by the start of the season.

8.7.11

I am in daily negotiations with Bordeaux over their amazing 17 year old Benoit Jean. I've decided he's the man to build our defence around despite being such a tender age, and my sources tell me he's unsettled. As of now, my bid totalling ƂĀ£5.4m (half after twenty international games, half over eighteen months, and a promise of a fee if he is sold on) has not been deemed acceptable. I won't go much higher for him, as I'll get two for that fee who I can mould into the player I want them to be, ƃĀ” la Orellana.

13.7.11

I give up on Jean, and turn my attentions elsewhere. A 22 year old Irish centre back by the name of Brian Rooney is looking for a club. I invite him for a week's trial, to assess his skills. He appears to be a competent marker, has good positional sense, and has a mean shot. I think I might try and make him a permanent stay, in the hope of developing his raw talent into something great. icon_smile.gif

16.7.11

We only have two keepers here at the moment, so today I've completed a deal for a third, just as cover. Welsh international Craig Rowlands has had a poor time of it in Besiktas, but has considerable talent, and will suit us perfectly. I pay ƂĀ£500,000 for his services, which is a bargain in my book.

I am close to sealing the deal for Ahmed Yahiaoui, Marseille's highly rated Algerian attacking midfielder. As we've lost Santos, we need someone to take on that substantial mantle, and he looks like he could certainly do that, as I start to piece together the jigsaw once more. ƂĀ£650,000 does the trick, and with time, he can become great. I have a fairly good record with signings, and I'm really hoping he won't be a dud. icon_biggrin.gif

18.7.11

Brian Rooney signs a five year deal after impressing on trial. I still need perhaps a few first team signings, but there's still time. icon_smile.gif

I've been talking with Chelsea about Carlton Cole. I've offered a little over ƂĀ£2m with something should he play a set number of games, and they appear to be listening. I have permission to talk to Cole, but there's an element of apprehension in my approach, especially since we're blessed with some cracking strikers. I offer him a decent deal, but I'll talk with my staff before completing anything.

22.7.11

We are in the hat for the third qualifying round for entry into this season's Champions League. Standing in our way is Mallorca, and they are no easy team. We'll visit the Son Moix first before the return leg at our place. We must get in.

25.7.11

After being in much need of a competent and experienced centre back, I turn to the hotbed of South America. GoiƃĀ”s' centre back Milton do ƃā€œ will cost me ƂĀ£325k, not too bad for a defender who will surely strengthen a defence which was great last season, and must be too this if we are to go far.

28.7.11

After a little scouting and further consideration, I decide to go through with the Carlton Cole transfer. After all, he's nearing his peak, and ƂĀ£2.4m isn't bad. If he completes 50 games, ƂĀ£1.1m more goes to Chelsea. If we are to go to the next level, we need the potential firepower at all times, and if the big clubs can have five or six to choose from, then so will we. Cole will battle for a place alongside Mina, Bojinov, McPhee, Dobek, Alexiou and Skalidis, not to mention some young talents. Competition is always healthy, and Carlton provides that in abundance. icon_smile.gif

The weather in Mallorca isn't too bad, but that's not my concern. We need to come away from here tonight with something we can work with in the second leg back at our ground. Milton do ƃā€œ and Carlton Cole both make debuts, with the latter starting in the hole behind the regular front two of Skalidis and Alexiou.

Mallorca 1

Angulo 22

Varese 0

We can work with this, but I am disappointed in defeat and in not scoring. We looked a little ring rusty after a summer break, but there were bright signs. Miguel ƃngel Angulo was devastating in early spells, coming close to scoring a fantastic solo goal before he scored the only goal with a blockbuster from long range. Alexiou had our best attempt of the first half wit a decent header which sailed over Leo Franco's goal. The second half was tepid at best, and not even Doukas could influence the game. A volley rose over, and then his cross fifteen minutes from time was headed by Alexiou onto the base of the post and away. Milton do ƃā€œ was fantastic on his debut, and Cole was pretty useful. With time, we'll get back into the swing of things, but todays game was thoroughly uninspiring.

21.8.11

This fine Sunday afternoon presents another opportunity to place our hands on some more silverware. The Supercoppa Italiana pits the Serie A Champions against the Coppa Italia winners. That means ourselves against Inter, and we have the home advantage. I place Mateusz Dobek in the hole and rest Cole, whilst Asara steps down to make way for new signing Federico Balzaretti. It should be a good game.

After Extra time

It was a cracking exhibition of football which, hopefully, will serve as a sign of things to come. Encouragingly, Skalidis looked good early on when dropping deep to build the play. After twenty four minutes of grafting we took the lead. Gaetano Montanari created useful space for Alexiou, and he sublimely curled an effort into the corner. Unfortunately we couldn't hold it long. Nicola Ventola escaped the attentions of our defenders, and once they attempted to close him down, Mattia Rossini was left free to slide in the equalising goal. Inter's best spell then followed, as Ventola should have added his name to the scoresheet with a poor header. The second half started in much the same way as the first. As the game looked to be falling into a stalemate, I made a change. Carlton Cole arrived to use his physical presence and speed, in place of Dobek. Skalidis dropped into the hole and Cole partnered Alexiou. Unfortunately, the next goal wasn't from any of those three. Minutes after Rossini had driven high and wide, Tomas Rosicky found just enough time to ram a volley past Stekelenburg and give CƃĀŗper's side a late lead. We needed a quick response, and we got it. Doukas hit a cross more hopeful than intentional, but Cole looked like getting there. He gives us a new dimension, as his size makes him hard to handle. He got to the ball and headed us level. icon_smile.gif With two minutes to go, Skalidis broke free but was felled going away from goal by Frey. The penalty was once again taken by Doukas, but for the first time since taking up the responsibility (seven from seven before tonight) he failed as Frey did well to push his attempt away. So we went to extra time. As extra time usually is, it was a cagey affair despite the game being not too important in terms of prize. It was clearly ourselves who wanted it more, and we took it. Cavalcante searched out Alexiou, and he added a second from close range to give us a great psychological boost not only for the season, but for Wednesday nights meeting with Mallorca here. Doukas lifted the Supercoppa to more cheers from the crowd, and we're going again! icon_smile.gif

23.8.11

I'm in negotiations with David Beckham's advisors. The former England captain is 36 and has been released by Espanyol. Amongst the coaching staff there is a concensus that he can still offer us much in the way of talent and experience, and his terms are well within our reach. We might be able to tie this up, and I'm surprised this might happen. It's a risk, as he might be past it, but from the looks of it he isn't.

24.8.11

It's a warm and barmy summers evening in Northern Italy as Mallorca visit holding a one goal advantage from the first leg in Palma. After the success of the method against Inter, Carlton Cole starts up front with Skalidis in the hole, and since Balzaretti is ineligible, Asara returns. David Beckham is in the stands to watch what could be his future club, and qualification is a must for us.

Varese win 2-1 on aggregate

We might have left it incredibly late, but we have made it into the European Cup Group Phases for the first time ever, and will get a huge financial bonus from it. We started very very well, reducing the deficit in as little time as possible. Doukas was on his game early, and it turned out to be his cross which was headed in by Christos Alexiou. He might have hurt himself in the process, but he was brave to put us on terms. Mallorca came out of their shell as expected, and looked to take a hold of the match. Faisal Subeit was harrassing us, but my new centre back Milton do ƃā€œ was equal to everything thrown at him. The rest of the defence followed suit. Zubizaretta hit a long range attempt on 37 minutes which Stekelenburg held well, but the lead was intact at half time, which was crucial. We were still level on aggregate though. The Mallorca pressure kicked up a notch early in the second half, when Stekelenburg had to make a good stop from de los Santos' low drive. Yet as time went on, we looked the more likely to win overall. Leo Franco made a flying stop from Carlton Cole's speculative effort, and then Skalidis had a header blocked by Borja. Subeit almost sunk us with a snap volley which Stekelenburg did extremely well to push over, but then it came. A poor kick out from Leo Franco was sent back towards him by Skalidis. Cole was onto it in a flash, losing Julio Ferrer before drilling in the crucial goal to put us in the hat for tomorrow's draw. He might have just paid back the investment I was so reluctant to proceed with, but it's all looking rosy now. A fantastic night in terms of meaning, and a good performance too.

25.8.11

I arrive in Geneva ready to face our destiny and discover who we meet in the Group Phases. Time goes on, as usual when an event is organised by UEFA, but eventually the draw takes place, and we discover we are drawn with Anderlecht, Glasgow Rangers, and Locomotiv Moscow. Now, we could have had a far tougher draw, but this will be a stern test of our abilities. Rangers have some wonderful talent - mainly Javier Portillo, who cannot stop scoring. Anderlecht are very under-rated, and despite their deficiencies, Locomotiv have proven in recent years they are a tough proposition. But I feel we can do this.

In Monaco we participate in our first ever European Super Cup Final. Despite the poor status it holds, we will have a stern test against Celtic, holders of the European Cup. Their squad, on paper, is infinitely superior to ours. Yet we have a resolve and quality of our own, meaning we certainly won't be pushovers.

penalty sequence - Fernando Torres (Celtic) scored; Stilianos Doukas (Varese) scored; Gareth Barry scored, Christos Alexiou scored; Francis Jeffers saved, Anastasios Skalidis scored; Sebastien Deisler missed, Milton do ƃā€œ scored

To hold a win over one of the best sides in Europe is a fantastic feeling. Even though it was only a penalty shootout (incidentally the first I've ever been involved in at Varese) we managed to hold and outplay Celtic for the entire game. After twelve minutes we clearly surprised the opposition when Stilianos Doukas, a creator of so much, headed against the crossbar from Cavalcante's cross. Despite that, we fell behind to Francis Jeffers' predatory instincts. Joaquin and Fernando Torres built well but Yepes broke the play up. Jeffers pounced on the loose ball and hammered past Stekelenburg, who did not move an inch. So we came back, and Balzaretti delivered a cross which was extremely dangerous but ended up with nothing. Soon enough however, we were level. Claudio Cavalcante put in another dangerous, and Skalidis rose highest to head us level. Robbie Keane and Francis Jeffers caused the problems for our defence, but Cavalcante and Alexiou were equally as potent for ourselves. Joaquin had a couple of decent chances close to half time but Stekelenburg dealt well with them. Three minutes after the restart we hit the wood work again. Skalidis dribbled into space and executed a finish which clipped the outside of the post. The game was there for the taking, but we couldn't take up that offer. Alexiou, Doukas, Cole, and Skalidis all came close to scoring the second, but it wouldn't come. Fernando Torres then turned on the style. A dangerous half volley wide had Stekelenburg scrambling, and his general tricky, although defended well by Milton do ƃā€œ, was still worrying. So we went into extra time again. Early in the first period, John Arne Riise struck a shot against the post. As extra time usually is, the affair became cagey, so it was determined on penalties. Fernando Torres opened up for Celtic with a perfect spot kick, only equalled by Doukas' excellent response. Gareth Barry sent my keeper the wrong way, but Alexiou hammered his high into the roof of the net. Francis Jeffers went to the right, but so did Stekelenburg, and he pushed it away strongly. Skalidis nonchalently slid the ball into the corner to give us an advantage. Sebastien Deisler strolled up but dragged his kick woefully wide. Milton do ƃā€œ kept calm to score the penalty to secure us the European Super Cup! icon_cool.gif Stilianos Doukas lifted another trophy, our second in four games this new season, and Maarten Stekelenburg took the Man of the Match Award for a flawless performance. Another majestic night for the club.

29.8.11

I wake up Monday morning to a phone call from a media group asking if rumours of Stilianos Doukas heading to Parma for ƂĀ£10m are true. Since he's my captain and an integral part of the side, my answer is pretty clear.

Upon arrival at the club, David Beckham is there to meet me and complete our deal. He signs just before we set off for the short trip to Chievo. Strangely we play them on Monday afternoon, but with Verona back in Serie A it makes sense. I cannot make the side any stronger from the one that beat Celtic, so we're unchanged.

A nice and easy start to the season, and a win which puts us on top after one game. We opened the scoring early through Christos Alexiou, who once again looks to be in fantastic condition and frame of mind. Cavalcante, as impressive as he's been since I signed him, crossed, and Alexiou finished with aplomb, steering the ball into the top corner. Chievo didn't respond well, and although they made advances, nothing of note worried me. So imagine my delight when Milton do ƃā€œ and Doukas combined to give Skalidis a chance, which he finished with an emphatic drive to put us two ahead. Mario Yepes picked up a knock and had to be replaced, so Domenico Asara slotted in seamlessly. Stekelenburg was drawn into action by Catalano's fierce drive, but that was the only shot of worth Chievo mustered. Just seconds after the restart Carlton Cole broke free only to be hauled back by Massimiliano Parisi. Gian Luca Crugliano sent him off to make things even easier for us. The third goal arrived fifteen minutes from time. Gaetano Montanari disposessed Raimondi and headed down the line. His cross was brilliantly finished once more by Alexiou. Everyone played extremely well, which is a great sign even at such an early point in the season.

10.9.11

We have a fair recent record against Roma, but those performances have come when we were hot and they were cold. The season barely underway, anything could happen. I'm missing Mario Yepes due to injury, so Asara comes in, and Beckham starts as a sub.

Varese 1

An unfortunate defeat to suffer, but we deserved it for an abysmal first half. We offered little or nothing by way of attacking, bar an early chip from Skalidis which Colucci did well to push over. Maxi Rodriguez headed wide, then Cole did the same for us with a right foot shot. Zlatan Ibrahimovic started to get into the game, with a dribble and shot wide just short of the half hour mark. It was all he needed to get hot, as his next attempt found the net. Maxi Rodriguez went dribbling away down the right, crossed to the centre, where Ibrahimovic pounced with a header to beat Stekelenburg. We dropped our heads, and Roma took advantage even further. Ibrahimovic again ran at the defence, who looked like the proverbial rabbit in the headlights. The Swedish international unleashed a gorgeous shot past Stekelenburg to make it two. icon_frown.gif At half time Beckham replaced Cavalcante as I decided we needed an energy boost in midfield, and it worked. He and Doukas started to link up well, with the latter having a few drives over and wide. We earned a few set pieces, and Beckham showed any doubters he still has the knack for delivery, as he planted a corner right onto Montanari's head, and it would have gone in but for a stunning Colucci save. The problem was that time was running out, and Roma were holding out. Stekelenburg made a good save from a strangely quiet Cavenaghi, before we scored with little time left. Beckham crossed another peach onto Doukas' head, and this time the ball beat Colucci. Despite the defeat, I'll take positives in Milton do ƃā€œ's fine form, and how well Doukas and Beckham combined. But we need to cut the defeats out of the game if we're to challenge for the title.

It's seasonably warm, with a nice drizzle about which will enable our passing to be as slick and quick as possible. The occasion - our first Champions League Group game at home to Glasgow Rangers. They have immense talent, but we've proven time and again we can upset the apple cart and produce the goods. After recent good form for Finland, Sami Hyypia plays in defence with a mini injury crisis over us, and as Balzaretti is ineligible Santi comes in and swaps flanks with Montanari.

Once again, we showed Europe just what we are made of. To the uneducated, tell them the name 'Varese' and you'll get a "Who?" or something about us being a boring Italian side. We showed tonight that we can live with and beat the best. For the second time in eighteen days we inflict a defeat on a Glagow giant, and fullt deserved again. An early goal was important. Stilianos Doukas broke through Rangers' packed midfield before having the presence of mind to curl a stunning shot from twenty yards over Jesper Christiansen and into the net. To my surprise, the game was ours for the taking. Rangers just didn;t venture forwards. Alexiou wastefully headed over, then Skalidis had a free kick parried. Sami Hyypia went off injured with a broken toe, so more defensive reshaping work was needed, but still we dictated everything. Ten minutes prior to half time, Alexiou found accuracy with a header, but the post was in the way. The half time break enlivened the visitors. A stinging drive from Aimar which Stekelenburg stopped well was a sign they were very much in the game at 1-0, so I urged the side to get a second goal. Whilst Barry Ferguson and Mikel Arteta forced good saves from Stekelenburg, we slowly went about breaking the game up and looking to advance. Carlton Cole wasn't having one of his more effective games, so I handed a debut to Ahmed Yahiaoui in the hole. It worked a treat. Skalidis was allowed to advance further, and as Milton do ƃā€œ sent in a searching cross, Skalidis met it with a crunching header to secure the win late on. icon_smile.gif Another impressive victory that has me wondering just how far we can go.

I don't look upon this evening's clash with Lazio with relish. We have serious defensive problems, and I'm forced to turn to young Vittorio Baggio to fill the gap in central defence, as I hand a debut. Beckham replaces Cole and goes in the hole, and Balzaretti returns.

Lazio 2

Adani 45, 61

Once again, we struggled and for the first time in a long time I'm starting to worry a little. We're certainly missing Santos a lot more than I'd have expected, and I still might need a better replacement for him. Saying that, we started as the better of the two sides. After Sam Dalla Bona had hit the post, Beckham and Skalidis both wasted good chances. On the half hour we took the lead. Beckham delivered the perfect free kick for Claudio Cavalcante to meet with a fine glancing header. Minutes before half time Gatti became the second Lazio player to hit the woodwork, and I would have dearly loved a half time lead, but Ivano Ayala prevented that with a towering header in first half injury time. Just after the hour he was celebrating again. Gatti's shot hit Cavalcante and deceived Stekelenburg. Adani was left with an easy tap in. Five minutes later the goalframe at the Curva Nord was rattled for a third time. Beckham hit a sweetly-struck effort which cannoned away off the post. We never looked too comfortable, and the worry is a little justified - we've already lost two games, which isn't good. Getting the big sides out of the way early is useful, but we should be beating them. Vittorio Baggio had a great debut - he was our best player.

Despite our 'troubles', Locomotiv Moscow shouldn't pose too much of a threat. They're decent, but we're better. Mario Yepes is fit to return so Baggio steps aside, and Asara has to cover for the unavailable Balzaretti. Beckham is also cup-tied, so Stephen McPhee is given a first start of the season in the space between the midfield and attack.

Locomotiv Moscow 0

We sit top of European Cup Group B as the only side with two wins from two. Locomotiv caused their fair share of worries, but we managed to hold on when necessary and grab the all important goal. Anastasios Skalidis showed early how we went about the game, with a low shot which shaved the post after six minutes. Locomotiv came back, and Ismailov hit a few shots which were either saved or went over. Petukhov hit a free kick which required sharp reflexes from Stekelenburg, but with Yepes back we looked very secure. Just after the hour we seized the advantage. Breaking on the counter, Doukas slipped a ball in for Alexiou. Keeping his composure, he found the net in usual clinical fashion, giving us a lead which we never relinquished. Lebedev hit the bar with a volley, quickly followed by a header from the same man with the same outcome. McPhee went off late with a leg injury, but we were always going to win, and now we must prepare for three games against Inter, Anderlecht, and Milan.

It's an absolute scorcher in Varese this afternoon - 33ƂĀ°C in northern Italy, and we face Inter. We are unbeaten in our last four meetings with Hector CƃĀŗper's Nerazzurri, and as such the team are quietly confident of winning. In my search for someone to replace Santos, Mateusz Dobek has earned my attention and will start.

Varese 2

Skalidis 38

Doukas 62

Inter 0

Just twice since May have there been examples of a game involving Varese where there wasn't a Greek goalscorer. Two of my three came through again today as the form we know we can produce came out in bundles. The start was cagey by both sides, with Cavalcante's tentative attempt over the crossbar the only point of note in the opening quarter. In truth, the opening goal was the first real piece of goalmouth action in the game. A move built from the back looked to have broken down when Skalidis and Alexiou tried to do to much. However, the ball was only cleared to Doukas, and when he's in possession it means trouble for the opposition. Intuitively, he beat Gallas and crossed to find compatriot Skalidis. He headed the ball past Frey in emphatic style. Leading the Inter response was ƃā€°werthon. He took on the defence and opened us up, leaving Mattia Rossini with the easiest of chances to just roll the ball into an empty net. As it trickled closer, Federico Balzaretti jumped in to clear the ball just in time. icon_smile.gif With the first attempt of the second half, ƃā€°werthon forced Stekelenburg into action for the first time with an awkward-looking header which required sharp hands. Milton do ƃā€œ was once again the rock at the back, breaking up everything Inter came at us with. As the visitors reached their best spell, we extended the lead. Skalidis ran at Steven Gerrard before making him look foolish. Returning the earlier favour, he shifted the ball to Stilianos Doukas, and he rifled the ball in off a post. Twelve minutes from time Alexiou issed embarrassingly. Skalidis had a shot spilled by Frey. Alexiou had what was almost an open goal, but he could only hit the post. icon_redface.gif Seconds later he forced Frey into an acrobatic save. The same keeper was needed to prevent Doukas with the last kick of the game as well. A highly impressive win which sets us up nicely for visits to Anderlecht and Milan.

We return to European Cup action again, with a trip to Belgium. Anderlecht have sone talent, but not of the level of previous seasons. Mohamed Kallon is perhaps their most dangerous threat, but we can do the job. Balzaretti is not playable, so I bring in Asara again.

We empitomised the perfect away European performance. We allowed Anderlecht to dominate, in the confidence we were able to defend competently and grab a goal when necessary. After a nervous start on the part of both sides, Carlos Jacques had a penalty appeal turned down by Dick Jol, and then Asara had one turned down when Jacques barged into him. The goal came just after the half hour had passed. Cavalcante hit a shot which was only parried by Petr Cech. Dobek was there to get the rebound and score the first goal. Unfortunately we then lost the most important player in the side. Doukas went down awkwardly just before half time and it became apparent that he couldn't continue with what looked like a damaged foot. Asencio came on, and Milton do ƃā€œ took over the captaincy. Kalle Sone and Yashi Karaca then took up the mantle for Anderlecht, with the latter hitting the post midway through the second half. A mix of embarrassing finishing and a strong rearguard action got us through to our third successive win in Group B, and we are also yet to concede a goal in this phase. With two home games remaining in the three to come, we have a strong chance of progression. icon_smile.gif

Today isn't the right time to face Milan. Unbeaten this season, we face them in the height of form. Add to that the fact we are missing captain and major influence Doukas, and you can realise how hard the game may be.

I felt we gave a fair account of ourselves, just without making an impression on the scoresheet. Stekelenburg was busy from the off, saving a stinging Joe Cole free kick. We responded with an attempt from Skalidis which went wide and high into our visiting fans at the Giuseppe Meazza. Beckham then hit a half-volley which went about a metre wide. From the goal kick, Milan went ahead. Marchionni was allowed to run down the right wing before switching the play. Joe Cole took over, crossing for Andrea Pirlo to meet the ball on the run and head the Rossoneri in front. Stekelenburg had to be on his game to prevent Dyer extending the lead twice in a minute, then Kutuzov drove wide as Milan increased the pressure. We made a better fist of things in the second half though. Milton do ƃā€œ did what he always does, snuffing out attacks time and again. Unfortunately we just lapsed for a moment and Milan sewed the game up. Marchionni's corner found Dyer's head, and the ball found the net. Minutes later Skalidis volleyed Beckham's cross over, then Abbiati was needed to put Skalidis off heading in. It wasn't neccessarily the worst performance, but at least we can now say we've got the big four out of the way without totally disrespecting ourselves, and can concentrate on getting easier points now.

After a hell of a run against the top four sides in Italy, we can relax in the knowledge they're out of the way, but we still must be 100% focused to defeat Cagliari, who make up for a lack of quality with tons of effort. We're unchanged from the defeat at Milan.

It was hard work, as I'd expected, but with some luck, we came through deservedly. David Beckham was immense today, taking up Doukas' mantle as best he could. Daniele Degano and Alexandr Shirko both tested Stekelenburg in the opening exchanges, the former with an impressive shot only a foot wide. Shirko hit the woodwork with a fiercly hit free kick on thirteen minutes as we were reeling in Sardinia. Yet we are strong, and fought back. Alexiou and Cavalcante both went close before we were given a boost after twenty five minutes. Poleksic was wrong footed as Mauri deflected Alexiou's shot. He went for a loose ball against Beckham, who arrived first. The Yugoslavian keeper felled the former England captain, and promptly received a red card from referee Filippo Burcsa. Christian Corallo came on but was powerless to stop Christos Alexiou slotting the penality home. Beckham was involved in the second as well. His cross from the right was perfection for Skalidis, who found time and space to score for the fifth time this season, which has started slowly for him, but might kick off now. Young Corallo was even more busy in the second half as the gulf in quality showed. Dobek emerged more and more, but he couldn't score the goal he craved. Cavalcante rocked the crossbar, and Balzaretti hit a great strike which hit the side netting but had a few fans fooled. Maybe this wasn't our greatest of performances, but we still ended up with three points which, after an indifferent start, might prove crucial. icon_smile.gif

A mere two weeks after meeting Anderlect in Brussels, it's their turn to travel, as we look to extend an impressive European run. I need to make two changes, as Balzaretti and Beckham cannot be registered until a later stage. Asara and Franzese are drafted in.

The win not only preserves a 100% record in the Group, we still haven't conceded a goal in the four games. As a result, we are one of the first sides to confirm a place in the Second Group Phase. icon_cool.gif It's been less of a struggle than I though, although this evening's game was tricky, because Anderlecht took the game to us and were unlucky not to score late. Saying that, we did dominate much of the game and should have scored more than the one we did. A couple of wayward Skalidis free kicks and a crashing drive from Montanari was the early action, but Alexiou had the best chance of the first half, having a header pushed wide after Montanari had headed the ball down. Asara tested Cech's reflexes with a long range strike held well at full stretch by the Czech international. Elmander and Perea started the second half very brightly for Alain Courtois' side, with the Swede creating chances for Guerk and Kallon, which neither took. Mateusz Dobek was then denied a fine strike twenty minutes from time by Cech's fingertip save. The match was very much on a knife-edge, still at 0-0 moving into the last ten minutes. Anastasios Skalidis chose a fine time to score his third goal of the European season. Dobek, in space, held the ball up after a one-two with Skalidis. The Greek continued a run into the area, and was found by the Polish playmaker. He unleashed a shot perfectly into the corner of the net. icon_smile.gif There wasn't enough time for Anderlecht to mount anything worth worrying about, and it turned out to be that Skalidis' goal was the winner. Along with Barcelona (who have played a game less) we are the only 100% side, and are the first side into the next round. That is something to be proud of, considering our size and where we've come from. icon_smile.gif

Captain Inspiration is fit to return. Stilianos Doukas has recovered from a hamstring injury and returns to take the captaincy against Napoli. Federico Balzaretti returns to the left wing after a European break.

Varese 1

Balzaretti 7

Napoli 0

I'm not the only one who was shocked that it was only 1-0. The volume of chances we created and came within a whisker of scoring is incomprehensible. As expected, Doukas was the instigator of everything, settling his influence over the game immediately. It only took seven minutes for us to take the lead. Alexiou turned on a sixpence and played a slide-rule pass in the channel for Balzaretti to run onto. The former Torino, Como, and Brescia man kept composed and scored his first ever goal for Varese (he had also played for the club before I arrived). Ferdinando Coppola was then forced into action with a jumping save to divert the path of Mateusz Dobek's header. Skalidis and Alexiou both then hit tame efforts which failed to worry the Neapolitans. JosƃĀ© MarƃĀa RomƃĀ”n and Sergio Bravo were starting to emerge more for the visitors, and Stekelenburg was needed to save two headers from each respectively. Mosca and then Skalidis both went close to scoring a goal as half time drew closer, before Doukas hit the post with a free kick in stoppage time. If that seems a lot of action, then the second half was non-stop. Alexiou contrived to head a simple enough header wide, and then Skalidis' lob was amazingly stopped by Coppola after Balzaretti had opened the Napoli defence up. Mario Yepes was then needed to clear Cossu's attempt off the line as Carlo Muraro's side showed us they were still there, and we were only in possession of a 1-0 lead. Totti and Lodesani came close as time ran out, and we were quite lucky to survive at times. Skalidis put the last chance wide, but 1-0 ended up being just enough to take us into fifth.

Media reports suggest Glasgow Rangers are set to start tonight's clash at Ibrox with Mido, Aimar, Portillo and Klose all in the same lineup icon_eek.gif . If that's the case, we're in for a tough trip. Asara in for Balzaretti.

All I can say is that we far from disgraced ourselves, and nearly upset those predicting an easy Rangers win. I never expected us to maintain our record of having not conceded so far, and it was proven true when Mido escaped long enough to score past Stekelenburg, whose hesitation cost him dear. As Rangers appeared to relax, we woke them up with a start. Skalidis elegantly ghosted past Fraser before whipping a delightful effort across the goalkeeper into the far corner to equalise. As expected, Rangers came back again and we were under some real pressure. Aimar's cross was headed in by Portillo to restore the home lead, and then Stekelenburg was needed to stop attempts from Ashley Cole, Mido, Aimar, Hughes, Ferguson - almost everyone. Portillo hit the crossbar on 44, and we looked lucky to be escaping a mauling. Imagine the scene when, with seconds of the first half left, Cavalcante's cross was headed in by Alexiou. icon_biggrin.gif Rangers were livid with themselves, and we were somehow level. We couldn't hold on much longer than we did the first time, because Klose created a chance for Portillo that he simply could never have missed. This time, John McGregor's side were able to hold on, because we couldn't create anything else. It's a little disappointing, but Rangers have discernable quality, the likes of which we probably could never match in terms of financial clout. Still, we know we're through anyway, and Rangers have joined us.

We sign off the first phase of the Champions League with a home game against bottom of the table Locomotiv Moscow. I am forced to leave out Balzaretti and Balepheteke for known reasons, so Asara and Carlton Cole come in.

We nearly embarrassed ourselves only to end up making the scoreline look completely unfair on the visitors. I'm not complaining. Eugeny Smertin almost surprised us very early with two attempts which required Stekelenburg's attention. Anzor Agapov then hit the crossbar, and our complacency was costing us dearly in terms of dominance. In fact, Skalidis' 24th minute drive was the only creativity we showed in the entire first half - which is almost unbelieveable for us. Even the start of the second half was the same - Izmailov shot wide when he should have done better. On the hour mark substitute Renat Lebedev broke clear and beat Stekelenburg to put Loco ahead. Or he would have if he wasn't adjudged offside. It didn't matter. Lebedev regained possession, bore down on goal, crossed for Agapov, and he headed them into a 1-0 lead. This time, we had no escape. Carlton Cole was proving almost useless in the attacking midfield role which Balepheteke has started so well in, so Dobek came on and instantly changed the game. Skalidis and Alexiou had been playing very well, but just needed a spark. Dobek was the said spark. Doukas broke forward, looked to shoot but couldn't. Instead, he played Alexiou in, and he smashed in the equaliser. Eight minutes later he put us ahead. We broke away from a short spell where we needed to sit back, and Todisco's long ball released the Greek forward, who scored his tenth of the season. icon_smile.gif The Greek lesson continued, as Doukas scored his fourth of the season to wrap things up. Asara saw him free and hit a searching pass. Doukas hit the ball first time on the half volley, leaving Gabulov gaping at the brilliance of it. We deserved the three goals for our sheer dominance late on, but it is certainly harsh on the visitors. We're through, top of the Group. icon_smile.gif

Oh.My.God. We couldn't have been handed a harder Champions League Second Phase Group. The draw, held in Geneva this morning, handed us Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Millwall. To get out of this group will require absolutely everything, and then some. There are some almost unbeatable players in this Group A - and most of them are our opponents. icon_redface.gif

19.11.11

Back to League action after the international break, and a visit to lowly Palermo. Despite their struggling position, they have some talent which could cause a few worries. Balepheteke and Balzaretti return, and in the absence of Andrea Todisco, who is suspended, Brian Rooney makes his debut after signing in the summer. Doukas plays with injections for a neck injury.

Chartier 30

Parisi 40

To be honest I'm infuriated that we couldn't beat the side with the rather nasty kit. Everything had started so positively, as after a spell of dominance Charly Balepheteke curled a wonderous effort past JesƃĀŗs Mora to score his third in as many Varese games. We didn't hold the lead too long however, when less than ten minutes later Luigi Riccio's cross was headed in by young French forward Alexandre Chartier. Shortly before half time we went behind in rather bizarre fashion. Chartier's cross was deflected away by Rooney. As Parisi tried to beat Balzaretti to a potential 50-50 challenge, the ball ballooned up and over Stekelenburg to put us behind in the most unfortunate of fashions. Our equaliser came in first half injury time, and there was nothing strange about this one. Alexiou had been knocked over by Kandelaki, and Doukas, playing with pain-killing injections, curled a fantastic free kick into the top corner - perfectly postage stamped icon_cool.gif . The shape of the game might have changed had Alexiou's 52nd minute header not clipped the crossbar and instead gone in, because a few moments later Palermo went ahead again. Caputo was allowed to run inside with the ball, and as Cavalcante allowed him to shoot, the former Sampdoria and Brescia striker cracked the ball in. It did appear as if we were about to lose a match which we really shouldn't have, but late in the day Skalidis came to our rescue again. Brian Rooney's long ball free kick allowed Skalidis to beat Mora to the ball and head in the sixth goal of the game. I'm happy we got away with a point, but these games simply must be won if we are to make the Scudetto a realistic target.

We return to European Cup action and an amazingly tough match against Millwall. Runners up in the Premiership last season, they have an under-rated but devastating squad. Rob Earnshaw, Tim Cahill and Anastasios Likoudis are the threats. I have to make do without Balzaretti and Balepheteke again, so Asara and Dobek do the usual, with Todisco returning but for Yepes who is suspended.

Varese 3

Skalidis 36

Doukas 50 pen

Alexiou 62

Millwall 0

Well, we needed to be at our best, and somehow we managed a comprehensive win over Millwall just seventy-two hours after failing to beat Palermo. Strange. Robert Earnshaw showed early on how much of a danger he could be with a venomous left footed volley from range over Stekelenburg's goal. Skalidis showed he is just as capable with a similar drive at the other end. With ten minutes remaining until the break, and considerably little action to note, we went into a lead. Christos Alexiou did fantastically well to beat Cahill and create a promising opportunity for himself. He sent the ball back to Cavalcante, and with his whipped cross Skalidis beat the offside trap to score another goal - his tenth of the season and fifth in Europe. If John O'Shea had not have cleared Doukas' header off the line three minutes later we might have been further ahead quicker than we were. In fact, it took five second half minutes to double the lead in a crucial, pivotal moment. JƃĀørgensen clattered into Skalidis, and referee Blacker awarded the penalty. Doukas converted clinically, and Millwall looked more desperate. Five minutes later an amazing forty yard volley from Skalidis had Kevin Young beaten, but rattled the crossbar. Such was the humiliation Millwall made a goalkeeping swap, with Given replacing Young, although an ankle injury may be the cause. The veteran stopper held out for six minutes before he could only parry Dobek's header to Alexiou, who headed in the match winning third and his 90th in the red of Varese. Another wonderful European night has me again wondering - just how far can we go? icon_biggrin.gif

I have decided to venture into the world of international football. After an abysmal European Championships Qualification campaign, World Champions Holland sacked Ruud Gullit. Secretly, I applied for the post a week ago, purely speculatively, without expecting much. Today I am contacted by the Dutch FA, being offered the manager's job! icon_cool.gif I feel I can combine the posts very well, and my first official engagement is yet to be confirmed. It'll be great.

27.11.11

Ourselves and Bologna have started the season in pretty similar form, and we also have a mixed record against them, so everything points at a tough match. The usual suspects return after not being available in midweek, and I have my strongest side out.

Varese 1

Balepheteke 82

Bologna 1

A draw was the fair result at the end of the day. Charly Balepheteke continues to impress not only myself but a vast array of football fans around the peninsular. The first opening of the game was created by the Cameroonian, as it was his cross headed over by Christos Alexiou. Balepheteke actually was the only player really doing much of note, bar Alexiou, whose volley was well diverted by Lara. Bologna started the second half brighter than they did the first, with Montervino heading Blasi's cross into the bottom corner. Stekelenburg got there just in time to push it away. Alexiou then wasted another chance, driving wildly over. Montervino drove only centimetres wide with twenty minutes to go, and it started to look more and more likely that there would be no goals. Then, with eight minutes left, we struck gold. Skalidis' header from a scramble at a corner was only parried by Lara. Balepheteke pounced to continue an astounding record of scoring in every game he's played for Varese so far. icon_cool.gif Unfortunately we were not able to hold on for the win, because Montervino's viscious cross was well driven in by Ronaldinho's 50th goal for Bologna. And that was that. No frills, just a 1-1 draw which doesn't really help us, but we're very much still in a strong position.

The last day of November brings us a visit to Udine and the Stadio Friuli, for a Coppa Italia Second Round First Leg. It's our first match in defence of the trophy, and I intend to keep a tight grip on it. Mario Yepes serves a suspension, so Brian Rooney gets another chance to shine.

It took a lot of hard graft and effort to come away with the win tonight, but my lads showed it in abundance and eventually deserved the win. Young Argentinian forward Claudio CƃĀ”ceres started brightly for the Bianconeri, driving low at Maarten Stekelenburg (who, whilst being my club keeper is also set to be my national side keeper for Holland icon_biggrin.gif ). Some fine work by Federico Balzaretti created a chance for Skalidis, who turned nicely but hit his shot off the crossbar. But the majority of the first half saw a midfield battle ensue without a whole lot actually happening. Alexiou's header was well stopped by De Sanctis shortly before Udinese took the lead. Giovanni Spinelli decided to use his initiative and drove at our defence. Balepheteke, chasing back, stumbled and fell, which meant Rooney was drawn in. Spinelli released the pass to CƃĀ”ceres, who drilled a shot in off the crossbar for his tenth of the season. Knowing we needed a goal, we started the second half in extremely lively fashion. Skalidis and Alexiou both started moving around busily, but kept on missing chances. Udinese managed to hold out pretty well, but with twenty minutes to go time ran out for them, and we equalised. Doukas sent a sharp corner over, and Alexiou rose majestically to head past De Sanctis. The winner was something to behold. Skalidis trapped the ball on the half way line and took off. Gliding past Dosek and Thomassen as if they weren't there, he unleashed a bullet of an attempt into De Sanctis' near corner and gave us the winner in spectacular style. We defended well and managed to get out with an impressive win, which is satisfying. icon_smile.gif

An all Greek show ended with a fine win in what might have been a harder game than we got. Santos might have had an early spot kick for Salernitana, but the appeal was turned away. After nine minutes influential midfielder Massimo Bonanni was sent off for making a crude and extremely dangerous tackle on Yepes, who was strolling forwards comfortable in possession. We took the chance to exploit the deficit as quickly as possible. Building from the back, Cavalcante crossed from a wide position, ignoring Montanari's overlap. Skalidis got up well to head another goal for the team, and his fourth in five. A fine solo effort levelled the game as the side from Salerno got to grips with their ten men. Argentinian hitman Sergio GonzƃĀ”lez broke free of Balepheteke's attentions, before skipping past Cavalcante and drilling a quite wonderful equaliser. We were back ahead before the break though. Federico Balzaretti made a fine advance along the left flank. He centred the ball for Alexiou, who rose up above Terzi to continue his fine scoring run. By this time Delio Rossi's side were struggling badly with their deficit, and were focusing on just holding on. When we needed to kill the game we did. Alexiou's cushioned header from Doukas' corner looked perfect for Balepheteke to strike. Only he was hauled down by Carotenuto, and Doukas converted another penalty kick. The win may keep us eight, but there are just five points to second, which is pleasing. icon_smile.gif

Barcelona 1

Saviola 51

Varese 0

Well, we might not have won, but to lose 1-0 to a side who have crushed Real Madrid 6-1 this season is no mean feat. And we had our fair share of dominance inside the daunting Nou Camp. Mateusz Dobek, in for Balepheteke, showed early promise with a shot which Buffon did well to save. As a spectacle, the first half might have been below par. I wasn't to care, as it kept us firmly in the game. Buffon made a stunning save from Alexiou's header to stop him extending a fine run in the competition to date. Stekelenburg was needed to twice prevent Saviola close to half time, and to the surprise of many we managed to be level goalless at the break. We just needed to maintain what we were doing, and not slip up our attentions. However, quality shines through at times, and Javier Saviola's abundance of that gave them the opener. Gabri sprinted along the right side well, before sliding the Argentinian goal machine in to give Louis van Gaal's side the lead. The battle of the former Dutch manager versus the current Dutch manager was proving extremely tight. With twenty minutes to go our potential equaliser was stopped by the post. Another header from Alexiou crashed against Buffon's left hand upright, then the same guy drilled into the vast stands. We lost, but performed very well. All of my young players were fantastic. Todisco and Montanari, 125 career games between them, were mighty against Juan RomƃĀ”n Riquelme and Gerard in midfield, who have close to 1100 career games shared. It'll help the side no-end in the long run, but we can feel justifiably disappointed tonight.

As the winter break looms closer, everyone is looking forwards to a well earned rest. We still have four engagements to fulfill, starting with a game against Atalanta, who love to cause us no end of problems. Everyone's back from European omissions and I can play my strongest side again.

Varese 1

Skalidis 17

Atalanta 0

It pleases me that we have kept what was becoming a rare clean sheet, and produced more determination to get the win. Anastasios Skalidis' 17th minute goal was the first action, as Atalanta allowed him to tee up a sweet strike with his right foot and maintained his record of a goal every other game this season. Roberto Baronio's cracking free kick was well saved by Stekelenburg, then his solo run and cross which was eventually headed in by Dario Romeo came to nothing as the latter was offside. The Bergamo travelling tifosi were far from happy. Centre back Claudio Cioffi tried an extravagant piece of skill to create an opening close to half time, but Stekelenburg was again equal to it. It worried me that Atalanta were in control, so my half time orders were to seize back the initiative. Balzaretti's wayward header was a sign we were getting back into it. Skalidis' slashed finish eight minutes from time ruined what might have been an awesome goal in a game which needed that something special, but it never came. I will not moan though - we've tried too often to play decent football and not come out on top. Whilst we still play great stuff, wins like this will do very nicely. icon_smile.gif

All in all a satisfying win. For a Serie B side Udinese caused a fair share of worries, but we managed to do well enough to take another win. Charly Balepheteke started brightly, with a nice shot which tested De Sanctis. Stekelenburg then saved well from CƃĀ”ceres, before Skalidis was forced off with an injury. He'll be out of action for two weeks, but with the winter break coming up it'll be fine. Carlton Cole came on and impressed. CƃĀ”ceres then drove fiercly over the crossbar. Doukas' header over was the last chance of the first half as we went in 0-0, but still with a 2-1 aggregate lead. Any chances we created at the start of the second half came from Balepheteke and were wasted by Alexiou. Still, if you give him enough chances he will eventually take one. Cavalcante, in supreme creative form, chipped a wonderful pass over the last defender, Orazio Rota. Alexiou was one on one, and didn't miss this one. icon_smile.gif De Sanctis kept Cole out twice before the finish, but we kept the 1-0 lead and qualified with ease to face Napoli in the Quarter Finals. A really uneventful game, but we did enough I think.

At a Press Conference today I announce and unveil our two new signings. Firstly, Norwegian International Kim BƃĀø joins on a six year deal from Rosenborg. The 26 year old has 25 caps for his nation, and can play in defence or midfield. He has great positional sense and aerial ability, and is a certain asset to have. Secondly, Anton Roelofsen, a player I've had my eyes on for a while, joins from Helmond Sport. The Dutch midfielder is a hard working and creative talent, and also at 26 is in the prime of his career. BƃĀø will cost a fee of ƂĀ£450,000, whilst Roelofsen is at the end of his contract and was free. Both will be fine acquisitions. I'm also looking into another deal which cannot be revealed just yet.

18.12.11

The last League match of the first half of the season throws us up against Venezia. I really despise playing at the Pierluigi Penzo, as we never do well here. Skalidis and Yepes are absent, making it worse. Kim BƃĀø makes his debut in central defence, and eighteen year old Christian Anselmi makes another start after impressing in the reserves.

Venezia 0

Varese 0

Interesting, goalless, tight, and tense. And a third consecutive clean sheet. For the situation, we did well. Venezia dominated long periods of the game, but we also had chances - probably the better ones. Nicola Vigano gave us a scare early on by deciding to drive at our defence before shooting over. Alessio Natali volleyed over, and this was all inside the opening ten minutes. On 21 minutes the same man headed against the crossbar after La Marca and Vigano opened up Montanari on the right. Vigano came close to opening up, but even though they were dominating, we were doing extremely well to hold on. We just couldn't get out of our own half until the 37th minute, when Milton do ƃā€œ blazed over from a rare corner. Balepheteke then had a volley well saved, and Alexiou headed wide right on half time as the half ended with our dominance. Slowly we came more and more into the match. Five minutes into the second half we wasted the best chance of the match. Kim BƃĀø curled a dangerous free kick into the penalty box, and Cavalcante's flicked header beat Paluzzi but clipped the post. Rodrigo Taddei then started to run his tricks, creating half chances which Stekelenburg did well with. The game swung back into Venezia's control, but this time we held out far better. Alexiou, on the counter attack, volleyed high over, almost out of the ground. Leading the line as the senior player, he really should have done better but wasted three more chances. I'm happy enough to have taken a point, but we need to get more wins, as the top of the table is immensely tight.

21.12.11

And so we bring 2011 to a close with a Cup tie against Napoli. I decide to give youth a chance again with Anselmi again starting up front, and resting Montanari allows me to give Roelofsen a debut.

Varese 0

Napoli 1

Totti 81

I'm extremely disappointed, but we can easily overturn this in Naples. We seemed jaded and wanting the game to be over so we can get going for Christmas. To finish just four days beforehand is hard, and it showed tonight. At least Doukas was in decent form, creating an early chance for Balepheteke before hitting a sweet dipping effort himself which Coppola watched safely over. Andrea Cossu had the visitors' best chance a little afterwards with a decent header wide. Francesco Totti was very much the instigator, as he made chances for himself and Bravo, none of which were taken. He was to figure more later. Doukas's long range skidding drive in first half stoppage time was the last real moment of action in the first forty-five. After a poor opening to the second half Anton Roelofsen might have thought he'd scored his first Varese goal when his left foot shot went close to beating Coppola, but the veteran stopper did just enough. With eight minutes to go, and flagging, we were sunk. Mosca evaded Todisco too easily for my liking, and his cross was headed in by the inspirational Totti. Balepheteke almost equalised straight away, but Coppola made a great save. A few players played well enough, but we lost on a rare off day. Perhaps the winter break can aid that. I'll get a few days off to travel home for a family Christmas, then back here for business, as there's potentially big things going on.

27.12.11

As I said, big things were going down, and how. I flew over from England late last night to wrap up this morning's signing of Mario Piras from Torino. He is an amazingly prolific forward who has been courted by some bigger clubs than ourselves, but we found ourselves in the fortunate position of having someone in the knowledge that his contract was unprotected. Waiting six months would have given him to us for free, but paying ƂĀ£1.8m now is still a bargain. The 25 year old, scorer of eighteen already this season in Serie B, will help us go onto bigger and better things. icon_smile.gif

28.12.11

Yesterday's piece of business is starting to look even better. icon_smile.gif Fenerbahce approached the club last night with an offer of ƂĀ£4.9m for Roberto Javier Mina. Since I don't use him anymore, this is a wonderful fee. It's as if I've not payed for Piras and actually been given ƂĀ£3m for my pleasure! icon_cool.gif The player and his agent are informed, and talks are held.

Mina accepts the terms in the afternoon and sets off for a medical.

29.12.11

Roberto Javier Mina has left the club and signed with Fenerbahce. I wish him all the best, but I can't help but feel proud at my dealings. The ƂĀ£4.9m fee is a club record sale too - for a player who was a club record signing two years ago.

4.1.12

Back to action with a visit from Perugia in the hammering rain. Since Skalidis has only just returned from injury, Mario Piras gets the nod over him for today, and we really do have a strong side out today.

Varese 2

Balepheteke 10

Cavalcante 51

Perugia 1

Bianco 58

We were far more dominant than the scoreline shows. It was raining heavily but that wasn't to impede our play. After just ten minutes we went ahead. Piras crossed from the left and Alexiou got up to head. His effort was saved, but Charly Balepheteke started the year with a bang and rifled us into the lead. Ten minutes later we thought we had made it two, but Signor Mario Jaric ruled out Alexiou's powerful header for an offside decision. Martino Caccia was by far the busier of the two goalkeepers in the first half. He was needed to stop any number of advances as his defenders deserted him. Mario Piras was having a quiet-ish debut for his standards, but a sharp turn and shot just after half time let the Umbrian visitors know he was very much still there. Minutes later we extended the lead to 2-0. Doukas helped Balepheteke's pass on into Cavalcante's path. The lanky Brazilian surged into the area, and with a touch of finesse finished perfectly. But Perugia found a way back into the game. Sorondo's header wasn't held by Stekelenburg, and substitute Diego Blanco had an easy opportunity to bring Perugia back into the game. Piras' overhead kick went wildly over as he lost his footing on the wet surface. Fabrizio Miccoli gave us all a scare when his jinking run ended in a fiery shot which Stekelenburg watched go wide whilst scrambling across goal. Thankfully, and importantly, we held on.

11.1.12

We need a monumental performance in Naples tonight. Napoli hold a 1-0 lead from their visit to the Franco Ossola, and if we are determined to defend the Coppa Italia, we need something big. Skalidis returns, and Alexiou is rested.

Napoli 2

RomƃĀ”n 17, 24

Varese 3

Skalidis 31

Balzaretti 42

Piras 84

3-3 on aggregate, Varese win on the away goals rule

Amazing! We were brilliant for the last hour of the game, and managed to pull out one hell of a performance. Mind you, we were shocking for the first twenty minutes. Napoli opened us up as early as the seventh minute, but Lodesani missed a simple chance. Pestrin then drew a brilliant stop out of Stekelenburg. It was not the most auspicious of starts. What we really didn't need was to fall behind. As sod's law states, it happens. Zenoni dribbled well and crossed for JosƃĀ© MarƃĀa RomƃĀ”n to line up a shot which beat Stekeleburg's outstretched right hand. Freddie Ljungberg then managed to go on a dribbling run which lasted a minute before he was forced to give the ball to someone else. It got even worse, as we went 2-0 down and 3-0 on aggregate. Lodesani's cross caught our defence on the wrong foot, and RomƃĀ”n met the ball with his head to score his second in seven minutes. Our defence of the Coppa Italia crown was becoming futile. Just after the half hour we gave ourselves a lifeline as Cavalcante's cross was headed in by the returning Skalidis. With three minutes left of the half it became very interesting. Federico Balzaretti saw an opportunity to run at Ljungberg. The Swedish international was caught out as my left wing back progressed further and further. As room opened up, he cracked a fantastic shot past Coppola and into the top corner. We were back level on the night, but still in need of another. We were in control though, and the pressure increased massively in the second half. Early after the restart Piras' cross was headed against the post by Skalidis. Piras then came close, but Coppola saved. With fifteen minutes to go I replaced the ineffective Balepheteke with Christos Alexiou and went flat out for the winner. It came. Milton do ƃā€œ's cross was glanced by Skalidis but stopped by Coppola. The loose ball fell to Mario Piras, and he chose the perfect time to open his account for us. icon_cool.gif That was it - the third gave us an away goals lead which we held onto, and made the semi finals! icon_biggrin.gif

12.1.12

We finally get a kind draw in the Semis. After years of meeting Inter or Lazio, we find ourselves paired against Serie B side Genoa. They're OK, but we have an awesome record against them. Our defence of the Coppa Italia may have been made a little easier.

14.1.12

Our latest League engagement brings bottom-of-the-table Verona to us as we meet on live television. My experimentalism means I will play all three of Alexiou, Skalidis, and Piras in one side, with Balepheteke taking a break.

Milton do ƃā€œ sent off 31

Ferronetti sent off 52

It was always going to be easy, but we might have been more prolific in front of goals. It started promisingly. Christos Alexiou, restored to the starting line-up, powerfully headed home from Andrea Todisco's cross. He doubled his tally shortly after. Doukas ran unchallenged, and as the inept Veronese defence didn't know what to do. Unfortunately, the referee (Cristiano Kulagic) felt that the players were upstaging him, and made his impact on the game. Two unneccesary bookings for Milton do ƃā€œ, the second for kicking the ball away in disgust at the first, meant we needed to reshape to a back four. It was our first red card of the season. Early in the second half Damiano Ferronetti was also sent off, but his second was for a rather crude tackle on Skalidis. At ten a side, our grip on the game was even more secure. We didn't need to put anything else into the game than what was needed to maintain the win, especially with Juventus just around the corner. It may be temporary, but we're into fourth, and with the game in hand still to come, we can make that permanent.

18.1.12

The long awaited game in hand takes place tonight as Juventus visit. They are above us in the table by a single place, but a win for us will take us into fourth place. Just the one alteration is made - Milton do ƃā€œ's suspension means another outing for Kim BƃĀø.

Varese 2

Alexiou 51

Skalidis 60

Juventus 1

Menezes Guimaraes 22

This was a big win. Juventus should have been out of sight in the first half, but we managed to hold out just sufficiently enough, and draw on our strengths for the second half. Claudio Cavalcante had a very early chance to give us the lead, but Pegolo managed to keep out his header well. Matteo Paro drove a venomous shot over the crossbar a little after, minutes before the Bianconeri took the lead. Antonio Cassano, in an unfamiliar striker's role, dropped deep to pick up possession. He came forward, released Carlos Menezes Guimaraes, and he scored his seventh goal against Varese in his 272 game career. I feared the worst, but was given hope when Skalidis headed Doukas' cross onto the goalpost. Menezes Guimaraes should have doubled his total in first half injury time, but skied his shot when leaning back. We were unrecognisable in the second half. After being almost destroyed for the first forty-five minutes, the team started the second half alert and raring to go. Just six minutes in and we were level. Doukas hit a pinpoint thirty yard ball into Alexiou's path. He trapped it, set up his effort and crashed in his seventeenth of the season. It wasn't long before we were ahead. Doukas charged forwards before releasing a pass which baffled the Juve defence. Pegolo rushed out, but Skalidis beat him to the ball and chipped in his fifteenth of the season. icon_smile.gif Maarten Stekelenburg was then needed to superbly hold Menezes Guimaraes' effort, then Cassano volleyed over. A last ditch volley by the Brazilian tormentor was dealt with, and we had held on! icon_smile.gif Stilianos Doukas was immense - the perfect performance from my captain. We're into fourth place, and whilst Milan run away with the League, only four points seperate us from Inter in second.

We must keep up our good form with a win over midtable Chievo side, and to be honest I'd expect as much. Milton do ƃā€œ is back from suspension.

Varese 1

Alexiou 22 pen

Doukas injured 17

Chievo 0

Bigatti sent off 11

Very little action was seen, but we scored the goal which kept up the good form we've showed. Chievo centre back Davide Bigatti was sent off after only eleven minutes for smashing into the back of Claudio Cavalcante. It was a very harsh decision as it was the first card of the game. From the resulting free kick Stilianos Doukas hit the crossbar. It proved to be his last act, as he went off soon after with a bruised thigh from an awkward collision with Marco Stella. Chievo must've felt everything was against them, because in the twenty-second minute Spartak Gogniev's challenge on Christos Alexiou was deemed a foul. The forward converted the penalty. On his 150th League appearance for Varese he scored his 69th League goal - a fantastic record. Barring two Skalidis attempts which didn't worry Cristian Lupatelli, the second half was a rather tame affair. We did exactly what was needed, and stay comfortable in fourth. icon_smile.gif

Hi Juni! icon_smile.gif

Just managed to catch up with the latest at Varese, and congratulations again on winning two cup trophies last season! icon_smile.gif Knowing what it's like to bring a club up from the unknown depths of the league to the top division, I can sympathise with you when a player thinks he is too good for the club and wants away! icon_biggrin.gif

Hopefully you can build on your current position and get Varese closer to the pinnacle, or otherwise find a way to either of the Turin clubs (wasn't that the whole point of this originally! icon_wink.gif ).

KUTGW!

Coppa Italia Semi Final First Leg against Genoa. As a Serie B opponent I'd hope to beat them, even without captain Doukas. Pablo Asencio comes in for his first start of the season.

Right, so I'm disappointed, but things are still in our favour. The first half was clearly effected by fatigue of two sides playing too much football. Alexiou's 40th minute header against the crossbar was the first action to write home about. Salvatore Perrone put a header over for the Rossoblu in the early stages of the second half, but then came the chance I fully expected us to take. Skalidis was fouled whilst aerially challenging with Claudio Vago. In Doukas' absence, Christos Alexiou took the responsibility, as he usually does. But Gabriele Calabrese pushed the kick away well. Mario Tarantino was buzzing around for the remainer of the match, but you can only fully understand how sleep-inducing this game was if you were there. We'll play better in the next game - promise. icon_smile.gif

A visit to Roma is not one of my favourite things to do. Yet at the end of last season we got what was required, and despite the abundance of megastars they have, we can do a job. Giovanni Lombardi comes into central midfield in the only change.

Marvellous. Days after missing a penalty against Genoa, Christos Alexiou showed true courage to come back and lead us to an awesome victory in a bad tempered match with two successful spot kicks. It looked as if the game was to go to plan early on as Maxi Rodriguez hammered a shot straight down Maarten Stekelenburg's throat. Ibrahimovic and Ronaldinho followed suit, and most people were expecting Roma to continue in this vein, and score a few goals to win comfortably and leapfrog us in the table in the process. But as you may know by now, we are the party-poopers extraordinaire, and on the half hour mark we went ahead. Following Thomas Colucci's wonderful save from a Christos Alexiou header, Walter Samuel impeded Mario Piras from a Giovanni Lombardi corner. Edoardo Dokoza awarded us the penalty, and as calmy as you like, Alexiou rolled us 1-0 up. Six minutes later we came close to scoring one of the greatest goals ever. Andrea Todisco's thirty-five yard pass from right to left was met on a full volley by Cavalcante from thirty yards, going only just over. Going in ahead at half time was great, but the best was still to come. Barely five minutes into the second half, Walter Samuel clattered into Christos Alexiou. It was his second yellow card, so Fabio Capello's side were down to ten men. As we took the quick free kick, Piras was clear with only Colucci in his way. The young goalkeeper felled the former Torino man, and was the second recipient of a red card from Mr Dokoza inside thirty seconds. icon_biggrin.gif Roma went mad. After taking some time to calm things down, Christos Alexiou was allowed to smash the ball past seventeen year old Hugo Dias, making his Roma debut in unfortunate circumstances. We really were not about to lose now, and Balzaretti might have made it three. Alexiou could have had a hat-trick from the penalty spot, but Skalidis' strong claims fell on deaf ears. Clearly Signor Dokoza feared for his life. It was one of the most impressive, patient, and utterly scintillating wins I've experienced in my 469 games in charge, and it extends our unbeaten League run to fourteen games, with five straight Serie A wins. Oh how nice that sounds right now. icon_smile.gif

5.2.12

February starts offering us a chance to move into third place. Lazio are one of the sides we tend to struggle against, but if we come out on top we move above the Biancorossi. Stilianos Doukas is fit and ready to return as captain.

Varese 0

Lazio 0

We escaped with a very lucky goalless draw. Lucky since we were battered by Mancini's Lazio, and only our defensive strength which has seen four clean sheets in a row now managed to get us through. Despite starting with a defensive outlook, Lazio had the better of the opening exchanges and Alessandro Pellicori, desperate to get back into the reckoning for Italy in time for Euro 2012, volleyed just over. Juan Luis MƃĀ”rquez was also causing problems, and he should have scored when Stekelenburg did well to parry Pellicori's stinger away. Instead he looked to set up Alessio Venturi, and the move was wasted. Our first (and only) attempt at goal came after 52 minutes. Skalidis broke forward but curled an ambitious shot wide. Damiano Zenoni came closest yet with a glancing header which Stekelenburg could only watch go agonisingly slowly, but thankfully wide. We managed to hold on to a 0-0 scoreline, thanks in no small part to the roles played by Stekelenburg, Todisco, and Montanari. They were all brilliant when they had to be. We stay in third, and very much still in touch with at least Inter in second.

Well, it was a far more tense affair than I'd expected or indeed given Genoa credit for. Our previous visits here when we were stuck in Serie B were pretty similar so I guess I should have thought this was a possibility. Everything was rosy early on. Skalidis' free kick was headed goalwards by Alexiou, only for Calabrese to stop it. Mario Piras was on hand to put us ahead. Only yesterday was I considering his place in the side as he hasn't started as brilliantly as he could have, but he repaid my faith in him. By the sixteenth minute it was even better. Skalidis had been fouled inside the penalty area, and Doukas drilled us 2-0 up with his third successful spot kick of the season. Montanari and Doukas might have put us out of sight further into the first half, but not doing so came back to haunt us ten minutes after half time. Mario Tarantino, Genoa's best player, turned and hit a fabulous effort past Stekelenburg. It took something that special to end a run of 483 minutes without conceding. Once one was in, we managed to concede again, and relinquish the lead. Franco Semioli's right wing cross was headed into the bottom corner, catching Stekelenburg on the wrong foot, by Paulo CƃĀ©sar Leal. We held an away goals advantage, but it wouldn't look too good for the defending holders to go through on away goals against a Serie B club. So what a convenient time Christos Alexiou chose to score his 100th goal for Varese. icon_cool.gif . Balzaretti's energetic run was not wasted by my leading light, who towered to head in number 21 of the season, and seal our place in the Coppa Italia Final, where we will meet Juventus. icon_smile.gif
