4-2-3-1. The player roles?

Hi all! Still playing in the world of '08 and have taken over at Benfica. I have always been a flat 4-4-2 man, nad this has served me very well throughout the game. However, after taking the job at Benfica, the 4-4-2 was not working at all against many of the Portugese teams who play 4-1-2-2-1 or 4-2-3-1.

Taking this into account, I developed a very crude 4-2-3-1 of my own, and at the moment, it's holding up well, but is not performing against some of the bigger sides, or when I play away and I'm under pressure.

Having not played in this style before, I'm looking for some help with the set up of the team. I have left the defence the same as the 4-4-2, and have the two midfielders as normal midfielders. The middle of the three AMC, I have set to playmaker but I'm really unsure of what to do witht eh wide AMC's Do they play tb's, do they have fwd runs, do they cross? and what of the striker. Target man? run onto the ball.
