'Slow Start To Summer Dealings - But Big Future Beckons For Russell'

Richard Hanson reports

'It's been a slow start to the summer's most eagerly anticipated month for transfers, but last night things seemed to final begin kicking off. Former Norwich midfielder Daryl Russell , who starred in 46 games for Stoke City last season, sealed a move to Austrian outfit Salzburg in a deal that saw £1.4 million heading to the Potteries.

Russell, 23, sees the opportunity to build his career abroad as one that can only be of great benefit, and described the deal as a "dream come true".

</div></BLOCKQUOTE>

A slow start indeed. Still slower though, when you are the newly appointed manager of Conference North side Worksop Town . Stuart Fairway looked at the paper and sighed. A week into his new job - his first in sole charge of a team - and the national press still hadn't mentioned his appointment once.

His first week had been one of planning, one of contemplation - and in all honesty, one of taking the back seat to assistant manager Peter Price , Physio John Tomlinson , and the clubs' solitary scout, Shaun Hird . This had been quite deliberate - with the inital task of settling into his new role at Babbage Way , Fairway had asked Price to take a hands-on role for the first week, with the new manager merely watching from the sidelines - observing his troops in their two preseason friendlies to date - a 4-0 win over Rugby United and a 2-2 draw at Kings Lynn - as well as taking time out to meet with his players individually, discussing the clubs' aims for the season.

Those aims, however, were far from clear in Fairway's own mind. Upon his appointment, Chairman Howard Raymond made it clear that he and his fellow directors were after a safe, mid-table finish. Supporters club Chairman Liam Freestone however, was far less optimistic - and according to the 'voice of the fans', the clubs' supporters would be content with merely avoiding the drop into the Unibond League.

The clubs' bank balance also made Fairway sweat. His sides' position wasn't as bad as many in the Non-League game - £31,000 in credit - but transfer funds were nil, and Fairway suspected that the current financial state of affairs wouldn't last too long. Season ticket sales had raised a grand total of £940, whilst the weekly wage bill stood at £2350 - £50 under the ceiling imposed by Chairman Raymond.

"At least we have a left back with a left foot" pondered Fairway on seeing his sides' opening friendlies. At this level, he had noted, it was a suprisingly rare commodity. The rest of the playing staff - pleasingly - certainly had some talented individuals amongst them. Battling for the position between the sticks would be two players at the opposite ends of their careers. 38-year old Ian Bowling certainly had the experience - over 320 games at Mansfield, Lincoln and Bradford, amongst others. Unfortunatley for the veteran, ex-Wrexham starlet Kristian Rogers , at 23, had both a fitness and indeed talent advantage, with the Chester-born stopper likely to start the season in pole position for the Number One shirt.

Aformentioned left back Kevin Davies had, for the moment, no competition for his role. Fairway felt confident with him, however - a pacey, brave player who recently arrived from Telford. On the opposite flank, Ryan Davis and Steve Nicholson both had credentials - Fairway preferring the younger (24) Davis to the more experienced (32) Nicholson on paper, at least. Neither, however, have played at a higher level than this before. That isn't a problem with centre-half Paul Dempsey - ex of Northampton - whilst ex-Barnsley Irishman Brian O'Callaghan certainly has class. Journeyman James Dudgeon is still only 23, but already has been on the books of 5 clubs - he too, is not without talent. At the same age, Anthony Jackson is one of those footballing rarities - a centre half who can also play up front. Whilst perhaps not quite as talented as some of his teammates, Fairway considered Jackson a player handy to have around, in the short term at least.

Whilst Fairway considered his defence strong, his midfield was lacking - in numbers, if not ability. Just three natural midfield men were on the books, and with Fairway preferring a modified 4-4-2 formation, with one midfielder dropping into a holding position in front of the defence, it was clear that bodies would have to be brought in. 32-year old club captain Mark Wilson was a signing by the previous manager - but Fairway had no doubts about the player's ability or attitude. Influential, hard working and with a sweet right foot, it was clear that Mark Wilson would be one of the first names on the teamsheet. Left-sided midfielder Miles Thorpe shared many of Wilson's qualities - namely determination, teamwork and a will to win. Whilst perhaps not quite as talented as his former Wakefield & Emley colleague, Thorpe would have a role to play. Completing the trio, right-sided midfielder Azzizhon Koshimov was clearly not of Nottinghamshire stock. The Uzbekistani winger, 26, is, in theory, on a two-year contract. In practice a combination of his University work and the resulting work permit means that he will have to be involved in order to be allowed to remain in the country, let alone a part of Fairway's squad. Perhaps a little lightweight, although a good footballing brain marked him out as somebody to be considered for the longer term.

Up front though there was certainly no lack of options. Dene Cropper , a 21-year old left-footer, is probably too good for this level. After starting out at Sheffield Wednesday, Cropper went to Lincoln, playing regularly, and scoring to boot, before a switch to Boston failed to work out, and he found himself in the Non-League game. Alongside him, Simeon Bambrook certainly impressed in the friendlies - bagging a brace against Rugby. Rarely for a player of this level, Bambrook's first touch was somewhat sublime, and his finishing wasn't too bad either. With two strikers of undoubted quality, Fairway found it easier than expected to immediatley transfer list two more. Neither Blake Norton (20), nor American Chris Cleary (24) convinced Fairway in the friendlies he had watched, or, more pertinently, on the training ground. Both were available on free transfers, although would stay with the club until they could find further employment. 24-year old Gary Townsend , then, would be the 'odd one out'. Certainly talented, but perhaps not quite good enough to oust either of Fairway's 'top-link' strike duo - for the time being at least. Completing the 18-man squad was a player brimming with the confidence of youth. 16-year old YTS lad Greg Archer picked up just £10 a week from his football - but was full of expectation and hope for the future. The potential, Fairway considered, was there with the youngster - but it would be a while yet before he could be considered ready for the rigours of first team action on a regular basis.

After a week of pondering, planning and observing, Fairway felt it was time to make his mark on Saturday morning. Scout Shaun Hird found himself charged with the task of finding ability for very little price - not the easiest of jobs - whilst Fairway scanned the PFA lists. One name immediatley jumped out at him - but it came with a sting in the tail. Bristol City wanted rid of 22-year old midfield-attacker Marc Goodfellow - despite paying a six-figure sum for him only last summer. Whilst available on a free, however, Goodfellow's wages were substantial - £1000 a week. To add to the conundrum, he would be out of action for two months recovering from a broken foot. It would certainly be a gamble to take on a player, no doubt on a substantial wage package, who would miss the crucial opening few games of the season. Despite that, Fairway registered an interest - hoping that he would be able to convince Goodfellow to take a significant wage reduction to play at a much lower level.

Not holding out much hope, he followed up his bid with another - again for a midfield target. 20-year old Andrew Fisk was a product of the Norwich youth academy - and was available on loan, with the word on the grapevine that he had little future at Carrow Road. Again Fairway put in an approach - initially for a loan deal, with the hope it could be turned permanent without payment should Fisk prove a hit. James Collins of Watford was a different story - the versatile left sided defender, who could also play in midfield, only came to his attention when it was reported that manager Ray Lewington was prepared to hand the 19-year old a free. With Canvey Island and Welling looking to keep him close to home, Fairway immediatley launched a bid - competition for Kevin Davies, as well as another midfield option to boot. Completing his quartet of transfer dealings would come a rather ambitious move. With Premiership outfit Blackburn Rovers not keen on left wing back Alan Morgan, Fairway offered the 20-year old Scot a two-week trial spell. If Morgan accepted - not all that certain in itself - the hard part would be convincing Mark Hughes that the Ewood Park outfit didn't need the £20,000 that had been suggested as a transfer fee.

In the current climate - one that saw footballers' not quite so assured of a big pay day as they had been in the 'spend spend spend' days of ITV Digital - Fairway hoped that common sense had reached the younger generation. He wasn't quite so sure after speaking to James Collins . The 19-year old - Fairway's approach immediatley accepted by Watford - left Babbage Way clutching an offer somewhat lower than he had hoped. Whilst he wanted Fairway to match the £500 a week he was on at Watford, instead, he had been offered a 50% pay-cut - but with the incentive of a contract until 2007, and a bonus package that could see him leave for £60,000, should such an offer be recieved.

Whilst Collins hadn't responded by Tuesday, news both good and bad had reached Fairway's desk. The good? - Marc Goodfellow would arrive later in the afternoon to watch Worksop in action against Chesham in the first home friendly - and the first under Fairway's direct control. The bad? - defender James Dudgeon would miss that match - and Saturday's trip to Workington through injury, after he bruised his foot in training.

Goodfellow's arrival at Babbage Way coincided - unfortunatley, in Fairway's eyes, with that of his agent. Agents, the manager noted, always had a strange grasp on footballing reality. To them, money still grew on trees, and each of their clients was the next Pelé. Goodfellow did at least show sense - asking Fairway for around £650 a week - a substantial wage cut from his current deal at Ashton Gate. Despite this, Worksop's bank balance simply wouldn't permit such a deal. Again Fairway brought out the same old incentives - longer contract, goal and assist bonuses, plus wage increases on promotion - in a bid to counteract the sour tasting pill of basic pay under the £400-a-week mark. The manager was somewhat suprised when he didn't walk out immediatley - he would stay to see the game, whilst pondering the offer.

Worksop Town v Chesham United - Friendly

Worksop; 4-1-3-2; Rogers, Davis, Davies, O'Callaghan, Jackson, Wilson*, Thorpe, Dempsey, Khoshimov, Bambrook, Cropper

Subs; Nicholson, Bowling (GK), A Trialist, Townsend, Archer

The injury to Dudgeon - combined with a lack of signings so far - led to a 'situation' for Fairway. He called on family - though the match programme stated the mysterious 'A Trialist' as amongst the substitutes, Fairway knew that Danny Wood had no chance of a contract at Worksop as he simply wasn't up to the grade. He did own a pair of boots though, and played a little at school - in an emergency, Fairway hoped that Wood could at least look half competent on the park. Things began brightly - Azizzhon Khoshimov opening the scoring on 24 with a well-placed effort from just inside the box, followed 10 minutes later by a bullet Dene Cropper header to double the scoring. Chesham's Doherty pulled one back on 36, but a Simeon Bambrook strike on the stroke of half time saw most of the hardy 73 who had bothered to come out for the match head for their half-time cuppa happy. The booked Cropper and the subdued Davis made way at the break - Townsend and Nicholson respectivley replacing them. The second half hardly provided much for those who had decided to make an evening of it to boast about to those slightly less loyal who hadn't - 2 shots, with only one, for Worksop, remotley near the goal. For Fairway though it was a solid start to his managerial career - three different goalscorers and a comfortable victory to boot.

Two days later however, Fairway's spirits were dampened. First came the news that Eastbourne Borough were also chasing midfield target Andrew Fisk , having a loan bid accepted, whilst on a more permanent basis, James Collins chose Essex over everywhere else - signing a 1-year deal to play Conference football for Jeff King's Canvey Island .

The 22nd of July would prove to be a very busy day. After initially rejecting the offer, Marc Goodfellow found Fairway not one to give up easily - and himself back in Worksop to enter into further negociations. He would not be the only face arriving at Babbage Way - Alan Morgan signing in for a 2-week trial period. A bit different from Ewood Park...

Friday too began busy - Scout Shaun Hird filing a report on his trip to the borders for an originally unappealing friendly match between Chester and Cowdenbeath. Chester midfielder Andy Harris , a 27-year old defensive midfielder, caught Hird's eye - and when Fairway discovered that Harris was surplus to requirements at the Deva Stadium, he too became an admirer - tabling a bid on Saturday morning. Saturday afternoon, however, was a different matter.

Workington v Worksop Town - Friendly

Worksop; 4-1-3-2; Rogers, Davis, Morgan, O'Callaghan, Dempsey, Wilson*, Thorpe, Davies, Khoshimov, Bambrook, Cropper

Subs; Nicholson, Bowling (GK), Jackson, Townsend, Archer

One change to the starting lineup - trialist Morgan handed his first chance to impress replacing Jackson, with Paul Dempsey reverting to his favoured defensive position, Kevin Davies moving to the Defensive Midfield role, and skipper Wilson going into central midfield. In stifling heat referee Micheal Reid immediatley annoyed Fairway - booking Ryan Davis and Azizzhon Khoshimov within the opening ten minutes. His mood was not improved on 17 - Ian Arnold tapping the home side ahead. Two minutes later though Wilson combined well with Simeon Bambrook - the 32-year old equalising to claim his fourth goal of preseason. After a quiet end to the half, Bambrook, carrying a knock, and Thorpe, having a poor game, made way for youngster Archer and Gary Townsend. Townsend's first action was to attract the unwanted attention of the over zealous official - another booking in a match that certainly couldn't be classed as the FA Cup Final. A combination of poor officiating, and the heat resulted in a turgid second half - although Ian Arnold's second on 65 brought some light relief, for the home supporters at least. Worksop returned home defeated - with the mood in the camp a little deflated.

Simeon Bambrook fortunatley showed few signs of the knock that saw him hobble off at the interval at training on Monday. The arrival of another injured player, however, was greeted with far more excitement...

Goodfellow in Worksop Outburst

'New Worksop Town signing Marc Goodfellow has walked into Babbage Way - and straight into a storm. At a pre-arranged Press Conference to announce the ex-Bristol City midfielder's arrival, Goodfellow told local media that he would 'expect to be a key player in the team, and could invisage Worksop's challenge being built around him'.

Supporters Club chairman Lee Freestone told BBC Sport; "Hopefully it's just posturing - we really could do without big egos in the squad. I'm sure Marc could be a good signing for the club - but he's got to learn that we just don't do things that way at this level".

</div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Fairway could have done without a media circus - he had hoped that he would be able to announce the arrival of other signings as well as Goodfellow, but a double blow came in the form of refusals from Blackburn over trialist Alan Morgan and, more suprisingly, from Chester - demanding £2000 that Fairway simply didn't have available for Andy Harris .

Worksop Town v Billericay - Friendly

Worksop; 4-1-3-2; Rogers, Davis, Morgan, O'Callaghan, Dempsey, Wilson*, Thorpe, Davies, Khoshimov, Bambrook, Cropper

Subs; Nicholson, Bowling (GK), Jackson, Townsend, Archer

An unchanged side for the visit of Essex outfit Billericay - Marc Goodfellow, and, a late new addition in Norwich loanee Andrew Fisk , paraded on the pitch before the match to the home support. Fisk arrived on a season-long loan deal too late for inclusion. The double-signing was, unfortunatley, perhaps the only thing worth talking about for the first 45 minutes - neither side really getting forward to create chances, with a 0-0 scoreline at half time that had 'bore' written all over it. In the hope of livening things up, Fairway switched Cropper for Townsend and Davis for Nicholson at the break. Townsend did at least manage a shot on target in the second half, which is more than can be said of his teammates, or, for that matter, his opponents - a bore draw of little good to anyone at this stage in preseason.

MOM: Gareth Ridley (Billericay)

Attendance; 50

Dismal - the verdict from their manager as the Worksop players warmed down at a totally deserted Babbage Way after the match. It was a decidedly average, uninspired, performance, and Fairway's men felt a verbal earbashing from their gaffer for the first time since his arrival. "How can we expect people to turn up" he said, "when we play like that?". Miles Thorpe though was exempt from the 'hairdryer approach' - the winger picking up a wrist injury that would rule him out for a week, and leave Worksop's midfield looking paper-thin once again.

Stamford v Worksop Town - Friendly

Worksop; 4-1-3-2; Rogers, Davis, Morgan, O'Callaghan, Dempsey, Davies, Wilson*, Fisk, Khoshimov, Bambrook, Cropper

Subs; Dempsey, Bowling (GK), Jackson, Townsend, Archer

Saturday brought Worksop's penultimate preseason friendly - a trip to Stamford . It would also bring a return to fitness for James Dudgeon - replacing Nicholson on the bench, whilst new boy Andrew Fisk made his debut in midfield, replacing the injured Thorpe. The handful of Worksop fans who had decided to travel to Stamford's Newflame Stadium were rewarded almost instantly - Dene Cropper plowing a lone furrow down the left, before crossing for Andrew Fisk to make himself an instant favourite with a placed effort from inside the box. On 9 minutes, Simeon Bambrook headed the second - and suddenley, the disapointment of the previous two matches was a mere fading memory. With no changes at half time, Worksop got into their stride - skipper Mark Wilson added a third in a well-worked move on 54, before Fairway did decide to ring the changes 10 minutes later. Injury victim Ryan Davis limped off to a sympathetic round of applause to be replaced by James Dudgeon, young Greg Archer replaced goalscorer Bambrook, veteran stopper Ian Bowling came on for Rogers between the sticks and Gary Townsend replaced Wilson in a revamped midfield. Although against admitedley weaker opposition, Worksop looked genuinely comfortable on the ball at times - Khoshimov in particular bossing the midfield.

Stamford 0 - Worksop 3

MOM; Azizzhon Khoshimov

Attendance; 121

After the battle - the casualties. Just the one this time - Ryan Davis ruled out for a month with a torn groin muscle. On Thursday, however, it was time to say goodbye to trialist Alex Morgan . Although impressed with the Scot, Fairway simply couldn't raise the £6000 fee that Blackburn Rovers demanded for his signature. Had he been able to, Morgan could have looked forward to a season as first choice. At Ewood Park, he would perhaps be lucky to make a few reserve team appearances. Upon his return to Blackburn, things got worse - the left back breaking his wrist in his first training session back at his parent club, and ruled out for a month.

Hailsham Town v Worksop Town

Worksop; 4-1-3-2; Rogers, Davis, Davies, O'Callaghan, Dudgeon, Dempsey, Wilson*, Fisk, Khoshimov, Bambrook, Cropper

Subs; Jackson, Bowling (GK), Thorpe, Townsend, Archer

The final friendly saw a fit again Miles Thorpe return to the bench and James Dudgeon to the starting lineup as Worksop travelled to deepest Sussex. Sussex League minnows Hailsham Town should have proved little trouble for Fairway's men - but Kenny Macreadie's side are noted for their physical tactics, and after sending Brian O'Callaghan off injured to be replaced by utility man Jackson early on, Jon Walters scrambled an opener on 24. Fairway would later describe the second half as 'frustrating and infuriating' - the rhyming not intentional - but the result told the story - Worksop had failed to win their final preseason game of the summer. Now, only a week's worth of training stood between them and an assault on the Conference North.

A bruised thigh for Brian O'Callaghan wouldn't keep him out of contention for Saturday's opener - much to Fairway's relief - but manager would have to decide weather or not to bring in a further addition to his squad ahead of the game. Scout Shaun Hird had long raved about Watford's loan-listed frontman Jason Norville , but when a video report finally turned up, Fairway could see why.

The Trinidad & Tobago Under 21 starlet certainly looked the part - and with the beginnings of doubts over Dene Cropper's preseason form, Fairway decided to table a bid for the 20 year old - hoping to bag him from the Hornets for the whole of the campaign. By Tuesday morning, it was a done deal. With one striker in, another was set to depart. In something of a suprising move to many at the club, youngster Greg Archer elected not to sign on pro forms when he reached his 17th birthday. The starlet instead decided that his education must come first - opting to leave the club, as entitled to do, on a free.

Greg Archer - SC - 0 Games/0 Goals - Released

Saturday 14th July - Judgement day. Well, not quite, but the League opener - and Fairway's first competitive match in charge of Worksop Town.

Kettering Town v Worksop Town - Conference North Game 1

Worksop; 4-1-3-2; Rogers, Nicholson, Davies, O'Callaghan, Dudgeon, Dempsey, Wilson*, Fisk, Khoshimov, Bambrook, Norville

Subs; Jackson, Bowling (GK), Thorpe, Townsend, Cropper

Just one change to the side that lost against Hailsham Town - new signing Jason Norville replacing Dene Cropper in attack. On a dry, hot day, Worksop shot out of the blocks - and within 4 minutes, were ahead. After some neat work by Andrew Fisk, Simeon Bambrook fired home off the post to hand his new manager a dream start. On the half hour, joy was doubled for the visitors - Wilson and classy Uzbek winger Khoshimov combining well, with the latter threading through debutant Jason Norville for a simple finish at the near post. With Dempsey making way for Thorpe at the break, Fisk dropped back into the midfield holding role, allowing skipper Wilson to make further forward runs. On 55, he nearly made the most of one such play - bursting through only to fire wide of the post. As it was, there would be no further goals - Kettering, subdued in front of a quiet home crowd, picked up 5 bookings to boot. A fine start to the season.

Man of the Match Jason Norville had certainly made his mark - scored one, but could have had a hatrick - and straight out of the country on Sunday. With Trinidad & Tobago in World Cup Qualifying action against Mexico, Norville had high hopes of gaining his first senior cap, especially given his stunning debut showing for his new club.

Bradford Park Avenue v Worksop Town - Conference North Game 2

Worksop; 4-1-3-2; Rogers, Nicholson, Davies, O'Callaghan, Dudgeon, Dempsey, Wilson*, Fisk, Khoshimov, Bambrook, Cropper

Subs; Jackson, Bowling (GK), Thorpe, Townsend, Norton

Norville out, Cropper in - just one change to the side for Tuesday's visit of Bradford's 'other' football club. Although an evening game, at this stage of the season such matches are almost played out in temperatures as warm as the traditional Saturday afternoon time. Although Ben Jones threatened on a couple of occasions for the visitors, it was Worksop who took the lead a minute before the end of the first half. Bambrook's endeavour down the flank, and a superb first-time pass from Khoshimov saw Dene Cropper presented with the opportunity, and from the edge of the box, he made no mistake. Townsend made an appearance at the interval - on for Bambrook up front. The second half began in the same vein as the first - BPA creating plenty of opportunities. Ironic then that it was against the run of play when they levelled on 79 - the long ball game played to perfection by Ben Cressey, with the defender picking out Greaves' run. After O'Callaghan blocked, the loose ball fell invitingly to Allan Pearce, who smashed home to deliver what would prove a fatal blow to Worksop's hope of the three points. They did however hold out for the draw - despite losing Andrew Fisk to injury three minutes from time - and can't be disapointed with four points from two matches.

With Andrew Fisk joining the injury list - out for a couple of weeks with a calf strain - Fairway's already stretched squad was further reduced on Wednesday morning. American-born striker Chris Cleary agreed to a mutual termination of his contract, with Worksop forking out just over £2000 to get the frontman off the payroll.

Chris Cleary - SC - 0 Games/0 Goals - Released

Further news on Thursday brought disapointment. Jason Norville was an unused sub in Port-of-Spain as Trinidad & Tobago went down 2-0 to Mexico. Trinidad currently lie bottom of the Group after just one game - but will be expected to beat minnows the US Virgin Islands when they return to action in a month.

Droylsden v Worksop Town - Conference North Game 3

Worksop; 4-1-3-2; Rogers, Nicholson, Davies, O'Callaghan, Dudgeon, Dempsey, Wilson*, Thorpe, Khoshimov, Bambrook, Norville

Subs; Jackson, Bowling (GK), Wood, Townsend, Cropper

Norville back - despite a goal for Dene Cropper in his absence. Fairway also called upon the reliable, if nothing else - he had now taken up a position in the clubs' fledgling Marketing Department - Danny Wood, to sit on the bench, whilst Miles Thorpe replaced the crocked Fisk. From Droylsden's first attack, on 9 minutes, the home side took the lead - Jody Banim finishing off a well worked set-piece from Simpson's deep free kick. When they followed up their opening salvo with a second goal - ex-Brighton striker David Cameron drilling home from the edge of the box - Fairway was furious. His side had simply capitulated - and were playing like a side lacking in leadership. Three minutes later though the visitors hit back - Nicholson's deep cross glanced home by Jason Norville . Two minutes before the interval, with Worksop beginning to get back into the game, Jody Banim struck again - stealing in front of 'keeper Rogers to head home Andy Lee's far-post cross. At the break, with little to loose, Fairway replaced Thorpe with the more attacking Gary Townsend, and on the hour, he had a part to play - winning a free kick, which Dempsey put into the box for Simeon Bambrook to crack home a stunning drive on the turn. Try as they might, there would be no leveller - Wilson the closest late on. Three games played, one win, one draw and one defeat. Consistency perhaps the key word for Fairway to focus on during the coming week.

Wednesday morning - and a hive of activity at Babbage Way. With Mark Goodfellow and Andrew Fisk injured, Fairway considered his midfield particularly low on numbers, if not talent. In particular, he considered the defensive midfield role as key to the entire Worksop system - and with no players naturally strong in that role, had been using defender Paul Dempsey in the absence of another option. Scout Shaun Hird though had been on the case - and finally had delivered a player who Fairway considered a target. Staylbridge Celtic midfielder Nathan Wharton is available on a free, and when his offer was accepted, immediatley invited Wharton for contract talks.

Two days later, Fairway was still locked in talks with the 24-year old, meaning no deal had been tied up before Saturday's visit of Lancaster.

Lancaster v Worksop Town - Conference North Game 4

Worksop; 4-1-3-2; Rogers, Nicholson, Davies, O'Callaghan, Dudgeon, Dempsey, Wilson*, Thorpe, Khoshimov, Bambrook, Norville

Subs; Jackson, Bowling (GK), Wood, Townsend, Cropper

An unchanged side for the visit of high-flying Lancaster, with no Goodfellow or Fisk available. Things would get worse just 18 minutes in - after being booked for dissent, winger Azzizhon Khoshimov continued to talk back to referee Prior - and was dismissed for a second bookbale offence leaving Fairway fuming. Reorganisation was called for - Davies made way for Townsend, as Worksop went to 3 at the back. This inevitably allowed the visitors more space - Dawes denied by a superb Rogers stop on 36 before Jones fired wide 4 minutes later. Jackson made an appearance after the break - replacing the booked O'Callaghan at the back, before Lancaster really began to pile on the pressure. Dawes, Sparrow and Sullivan - the latter hitting the post on 67 - all had chances before finally, on 84, the pressure told. Sullivan's cross into the middle found Bates, who found himself brought down by skipper Wilson. It was a cast-iron penalty - but, amazingly, Paul Sparrow put his spot-kick wide, and Worksop were able to hold on to a most unlikely point.

Saturday's ill-tempered clash left Fairway counting the cost on Monday morning. Simeon Bambrook (knee) and Jason Norville (heel) both completed the game with knocks, Bambrook ruled out for 3 weeks whilst loanee Norville would be sidelined for just a week. On top of that, Azzizhon Khoshimov would be suspended for one match.

Fortunatley, if such a word could be used in the situation, Worksop were not due in action for another fortnight. Also - hopefully - available for that trip to Altringham would be a new face, as on Monday afternoon Stalybridge Celtic midfielder Nathan Wharton agreed terms to join Worksop after playing 72 minutes of Celtic's 2-0 defeat to Moor Green on Saturday.

With the European Transfer Window slamming shut on Tuesday evening - although fortunatley not affecting Non Premiership clubs in England - and for a moment on Wednesday morning, Fairway was back in 'fan' mode, scanning the back pages for information on the latest deals. Generally it had been a quiet deadline day for the big boys - misfit Hernan Crespo left Chelsea for home shores, joining Roma for just over £4 million, whilst Deadline Day's big spenders had been Portsmouth - £2.7 million for Polish striker Majec Zurawski from Wisla Krakow. Premiership leaders Arsenal saw no need to strengthen their squad, with Thierry Henry already on fire with 7 goals from 6 games, whilst Middlesbrough were just delighted to be lying in second place. Down in the newly rebranded 'Championship', Fairway's beloved Brighton were struggling - 21st in the league and without a ha'penny to rub together. Their solitary capture of the summer, Chris Eagles , a midfielder on loan from mighty Manchester United, did look quite handy however.

With Internationals to the fore on Saturday Fairway watched England beat Austria 2-0 - Lampard and Owen the scorers, whilst in the same group Wales got off to a flyer beating Azerbijan 2-0, with goals from Speed and Bellamy. Northern Ireland went down 1-0 to Poland, whilst in Group 4 Ireland thumped Cyprus, who had Brighton's Alexis Nicholas sent off, 6-0 - Macken, Holland (2), Lee, Robbie Keane and Duff grabbing the goals. Scotland were not involved in World Cup Qualifying action.

Ryan Davis' return to fitness on Wednesday coincided with the second round of European World Cup Qualifiers. England were held to a 0-0 draw by Poland, whilst also in Group 6 Wales continued their fine start - Koumas and Savage scoring in a 2-0 victory over Northern Ireland . Scotland started their campaign in the worst possible way - a 2-0 home reverse to Slovakia, with Barry Ferguson missing a penalty, whilst Ireland edged out Switzerland in Basle, Macken bagging a brace.

Altringham v Worksop Town - Conference North Game 5

Worksop; 4-1-3-2; Rogers, Dempsey, Davies, O'Callaghan, Dudgeon, Wharton, Wilson*, Thorpe, Fisk, Cropper, Norville

Subs; Nicholson, Bowling (GK), Jackson, Goodfellow, Townsend

Whilst new boy Wharton made his bow, and both Fisk and Norville were declared fit, the presence of Marc Goodfellow amongst the substitutes wasn't as expected by the away support. In fact, it was a mere numbers excerise - the ex-Stoke man only doing light work in training, and therefore able to make up the numbers on the bench, but unlikely to get onto the pitch until fully fit. In chilly conditions the visitors were able to make a dream start - Wilson pulling the ball square for Andrew Fisk to steer home from close range after just 4 minutes. Unfortunatley, on 10 it was Altringham's chance to take advantage of lax defending - Worksop all at sea when Marcus Hallows levelled from the corner of the box. With Wilson picking up a knock just before the break, Fairway handed the captains armband to Kevin Davies at half time, sending on Gary Townsend to replace Wilson. On 57 Worksop could have taken the lead, with two chances in the space of a minute - first Norville shooting wide, before Cropper's cross-cum-shot was tipped over by the athletic Stuart Coburn. With the game still tight, Fairway did decide to introduce Marc Goodfellow - replacing Miles Thorpe for a 15 minute cameo. If nothing else, Fairway figured, it would help him with his fitness. Unfortunatley though it wouldn't change the game - Norville squandering Worksop's final chance on 85, whilst at the other end Rogers did well to deny the busy Hallows two minutes from time. Draws are one thing, but victories are an entirely different kettle of fish.

Mark Wilson's knock was later confirmed as a groin strain that would keep him out for a couple of weeks. Fairway was however able to welcome Azzizhon Khoshimov back - his suspension served - whilst on Wednesday Marc Goodfellow and Simeon Bambrook also returned to full training.

Thursday - and fresh from being held to a 1-1 draw by Worksop, Altringham came in with a £1000 offer for Gary Townsend . The local lad wasn't too highly thought of by Fairway, who had given him the opportunity to impress, and with the financial situation worsening as predicted, he accepted the offer, giving Townsend permission to travel and attempt to tie up a deal.

With three draws from five matches, everybody at Worksop wanted to get back to winning ways - and bottom of the pile Stafford Rangers were perhaps the ideal opposition to do so against. Fairway handed Goodfellow his first start, replacing the injured Wilson, whilst up front Bambrook returned to replace Dene Cropper. Worksop piled on the pressure from the off, and didn't let up - Goodfellow even winning, then blazing over the bar, a spot-kick on 12 minutes after he had been tripped by Wayne Daniel. The midfielder was always in the thick of the early action - almost making amends for his penalty miss by hitting the bar three minutes later. Stafford were forced to defend, and did so valiantly, but at the expense of their attacking instincts - Rogers had little to do in the first half. At the break Faiway replaced a tiring Bambrook with Dene Cropper, in the hope that he could inspire a goal that in all honesty was richly deserved. Finally, the pressure told - on 61 Cropper and Thorpe linked up on the left, before Marc Goodfellow burst through the centre to fire his first goal in a Worksop shirt from just outside the area. 7 minutes later, the scores would be level. With their first, and, as it proved, only chance of the match Gary Fife coolly levelled for Stafford leaving Worksop's supporters - and management team - frustrated. It wasn't for want of trying that Worksop didn't regain the lead - Thorpe, Goodfellow, Norville and Wharton all having chances late on - but some brave defending and poor finishing led to yet another home draw.

Sunday morning saw Gary Townsend tie up the loose ends and complete his £1000 move to Altringham . Fairway, however was more concerned with the draw for the Second Qualifying Round of the FA Cup. A long way from the final at Cardiff - a long way even from the First Round proper - but Fairway still had high hopes that his side would be able to at least progress past Ryman League side Fisher Athletic .

Gary Townsend - FLC - 4 Games/0 Goals - Altringham, £1000

On Tuesday, Townsend's departure was followed up by bids for out of favour goalkeeper Ian Bowling . Although not officially transfer listed, it was well known in non-league circles that the 39-year old was unhappy at Babbage Way - and after Chesham had their Free Transfer bid accepted, offers quickly followed from Aylsebury, Guiseley and Hinckley .

Hinckley also had a player that interested Fairway with a view to strengthening his own squad. 37-year old Stuart Storer is a right sided player who can operate in defence or in midfield - in short, a natural wingback with attacking tendencies. A veteran of over 370 professional matches, including a memorable spell at Fairway's beloved Brighton & Hove Albion - he scored the final goal at the Goldstone Ground - Storer may be getting on in years, but, Fairway told Chairman Raymond, he was sure that he still had something to offer.

Unfortunatley, Hinckley wouldn't play ball. Although Fairway had been allocated the £1000 recieved for Gary Townsend to spend on players, he wasn't entirely sure if buying Storer would be a wise use of the cash, and had initially tried to take the veteran on a free. When that offer was rebuked, he decided to take stock - sending scout Hird to watch the player before making a firm bid. It didn't, however, stop him from dropping a few hints...

Worksop Observer - Sport - Friday 24th September 2004

'Fairway Keen On Storer'

'Worksop Town manager Stuart Fairway has stated his intent to bring Hinckley United man Stuart Storer to Babbage Way. Storer, 37, is a versatile character who can operate on the right of defence or midfield, and is thought to be available at a fee of £1000.

Fairway told the Observer; "I feel that Stuart would be a good signing - but funds are limited, and should we spend £1000 on him, then transfer funds would again be very low until we could move another player on. I'm happy with the squad at the moment, but I feel that Stuart would add something to the squad, especially given that he can operate in a number of roles".

In other Town news, skipper Mark Wilson is fit and could return to the squad for tomorrow's visit of Nuneaton .

Worksop; 4-1-3-2; Rogers, Dempsey, Davies, O'Callaghan, Dudgeon, Wharton, Goodfellow, Wilson*, Fisk, Bambrook, Norville

Subs; Nicholson, Bowling (GK), Thorpe, Khoshimov, Cropper

With Wilson back in for Thorpe Fairway considered the side perhaps his strongest available lineup - Goodfellow on the left of the midfield trio, to start with at least. Nuneaton began brightly - Adams thundering a free kick into Rogers' arms on 6 minutes, before Carl Frew headed against the side netting on 17. On 39 though it was Worksop who took the lead - Wilson threading through for Jason Norville to tap home from close range. On the stroke of half time though Nuneaton surged forward in a classic counter attacking move. Stuart Whittaker applied the final touch - glancing the ball beyond Rogers - but the damage had been done in a sweeping, flowing passing move upfield that for a moment made the visitors look like the great Ajax side of the late 70's. Fairway made a change at the break - Nicholson replacing Dudgeon at the back, with Dempsey moving into the middle - but the second half started in far slower mode, Goodfellow and Whittaker with the only chances for either side. On 72 Fairway made his second change - Wilson off for Khoshimov - and it had an immediate impact. On 76, Worksop took the lead - Goodfellow's ball into the channel released Khoshimov, who centered for Jason Norville to nod home his second of the afternoon. If any Worksop fans had hopes of a victory however, they were to be sadly mistaken. Murphy's cross and a fantastic Mark Noon half volley put paid to that - the visitors levelling 9 minutes from time, and then stubbornly holding on for a point. Something, Fairway considered, needed to change.

With the news that Ian Bowling had accepted a move to Chesham on Sunday morning, Fairway considered his position on a replacement. There was no doubt about it, a substitute 'keeper would have to be found - but the financial situation probably ruled out a permanent signing.

Ian Bowling - GK - 0 Games/0 Goals - Chesham, Free

On Monday Hinckley manager Dean Thomas had mixed news for Fairway. Although he would be prepared to let Stuart Storer go, Storer had effectivley dealt a hammer-blow to the deal, coming out in the local press to state his love for Hinckley, and that he had 'no desire' to leave Middlefield Lane, wheather to join Worksop or any other club. Complicating matters further, he would inevitably be involved on Tuesday night...

Hinckley United v Worksop Town - Conference North Game 8

Worksop; 4-1-3-2; Rogers, Dempsey, Davies, O'Callaghan, Dudgeon, Wharton, Goodfellow, Wilson*, Fisk, Bambrook, Norville

Subs; Nicholson, Cross (GK), Thorpe, Khoshimov, Cropper

An unchanged starting lineup for the midweek trip to Hinckley - Bowling's place on the bench filled by youth team stopper Cross. Worksop target Storer did start for the home side, playing at right back - and his first action of a dire opening third for all was to pick up a booking on 26 for a foul on Bambrook. In fact the game really didn't get going before the half hour mark - Whittle saving well from Norville on 30, before Fisk drilled wide on 34. Worksop were getting into the swing of things, and on 37, took the lead - Wharton's pass skillfully converted by Jason Norville from inside the box. Although Hinckley skipper Willis should have levelled - ironically, from Storer's corner - on the stroke of half time, his shot thundered into the side netting, allowing Fairway's men to take a lead into the break. Whilst there had been no changes at half time for Worksop, Hinckley started the second half in more attacking mode - Rogers denying Smith on 67 before Fairway did introduce fresh blood - Thorpe and Cropper, for Fisk and Bambrook respectivley. On 80 though Worksop hearts would be stopped. John Burns raced onto a hopeful punt, and beat Rogers with a drilled shot to his right. It was the same old story as far as the visiting fans were concerned - yet another draw. Some of them were making their way out of the stadium three minutes later - but those who could immediatley turned back when on 83 Norville hit the ball through to Miles Thorpe , who saw his low, powerful shot squeeze under the body of 'keeper Whittle. Again Hinckley should have levelled - Smith hitting the side netting on 86 - but a minute later, it really was all over for Dean Thomas' men - sub Dene Cropper tapping home fellow goalscorer Thorpe's near-post cross to wrap up a fine victory - only Worksop's second of the season.

With a ringing endorsement from Chairman Raymond in his ears - the board 'delighted' with victory over Hinckley - Fairway went to bed a happy man on Tuesday evening. Wednesday began brighly too - Hucknall accepting a loan offer for 17-year old 'keeper Jason Fisher .

Teenager Fisher had been reccomended to Fairway by scout Shaun Hird, and although just a youngster, he was considered a real talent. Of course, his YTS status meant a low wage - just £10 a week - with Fairway having no problems picking up that tab for the remainder of the season. It took the player slightly longer to make up his mind than the club - and frustraitingly, no word had been recieved by Saturday morning.

Fisher Athletic v Worksop Town - FA Cup Second Round Qualifying

Worksop; 4-1-3-2; Rogers, Dempsey, Davies, O'Callaghan, Dudgeon, Wharton, Goodfellow, Wilson*, Fisk, Bambrook, Norville

Subs; Nicholson, Cross (GK), Thorpe, Khoshimov, Cropper

Again then youth team 'keeper Cross would travel with the first teammers - Essex the destination for Worksop's band of merry men as the FA Cup really began to kick off. Whilst there would be no changes in the starting lineup, Fairway hoped that his side would be able to ease off a little in the second half, hopefully after scoring several times, to allow some of his star names to take a rest, with one eye on a potential Third Round Qualifying game next week, should Worksop progress - so a foul on Jason Norville as early as the third minute certainly wasn't in the game plan. Norville left the field for treatment, but returned moments later, coming close with a shot over the top on 15. Fisher 'keeper Harris quickly became the busier of the two custodians - denying Norville again on 22 and Fisk 8 minutes later. On 39 though he would be beaten - Fisk sliding the ball square and Jason Norville tapping home. It was Norville's last action of the game - at half time he, as well as the tiring Goodfellow, were replaced by Cropper and Thorpe respectivley. Worksop continued to pressurise - Thorpe close on 50, Fisk on 57 and Cropper on 64 before Andrew Fisk did net a second - scrambling the ball over the line in a congested penalty area after Cropper had seen a shot blocked. Worksop were cruising, and it looked like a case of scoring as many as they wanted. Wilson, replaced by Khoshimov on 78 after playing a blinder, Wharton, Bambrook and Cropper all found themselves denied by the athletic Harris, before Fisher made sure of a nervy finish when Peter Williams scored on the counter attack with the clock showing 89. Despite throwing 5 up front, there would be no late leveller - and Worksop progress in the Cup with some style.

The £4000 prize money was certainly a boost - and the victory also convinced Jason Fisher that his future, for this season at least, lay at Babbage Way, with the loanee from Hucknall signing on until the end of the season.

Monday's Third Round Qualifying draw saw Worksop drawn at home - Blyth Spartans , who defeated Cambridgeshire side Histon in the previous round, the visitors to Babbage Way on the 16th of October.

The good mood couldn't last long, however, and on Tuesday morning Fairway was disapointed to see Marc Goodfellow ruled out for a month - his troublesome groin playing up again. Just a strain diagnosed by Physio Tomlinson, but after the positive impact the new signing had given to the team, it was certainly a blow. Worse was to follow - Tomlinson let it be known to Fairway that Goodfellow could do with lengthy - and expensive - surgery to correct the problem in the long term. For now, it would have to wait - but depending on how things turned out, Fairway was resigned to losing Goodfellow to the surgeon's knife at some stage during the campaign, if not at the end of it.

With no game on Saturday it was the turn of International action to once again take centre stage - and a game that many had been waiting for with England taking on Wales at St Mary's. Shaun Wright-Phillips scored the only goal of a tight game 2 minutes before the end, handing England a 1-0 victory. Northern Ireland matched that score - beating Azerbijan by a single goal in the same group - Healy netting, whilst Scotland earnt a point at home to Norway - Kenny Miller scoring just before half time. Of the 'Home' Nations though, Ireland were by far the most impressive - holding mighty France to a 1-1 draw in St Denis - Ian Harte scoring from the penalty spot.

Tuesday's news was not encouraging. Mark Wilson followed Marc Goodfellow into the treatment room - ruled out for a week with a strained wrist. The skipper would certainly miss Saturday's Cup game against Blyth, and was also considered a doubt for the next League game, in midweek against Vauxhall Motors.

With Wednesday an international date, Fairway was pleased to see England continue their winning ways with a 5-1 thumping of Azerbijan - Lampard (2), Owen, Gerrard and Rooney all on the scoresheet. Wales also secured a useful result - Iwan Roberts scoring in a 1-1 draw with Poland, whilst Northern Ireland got a useful 0-0 draw with Austria. Scotland finally secured thier first win, away in Moldova with Gallagher and Rae netting, whilst Ireland beat the Faroe Islands 4-0 - Kilbane's brace, and strikes from Harte and Hunt securing all three points.

Whilst the injury problems had already depleted Fairway's squad, he still considered one or two players on the clubs' books surplus to requirements. After starring in Preseason before picking up an injury, Ryan Davis was yet to play for the First Team in 04/05 - and when Halesowen and Hednesford both offered £1000 each for the right back, Fairway decided to do business, accepting both bids.

Worksop; 4-1-3-2; Rogers, Dempsey, Davies*, O'Callaghan, Dudgeon, Wharton, Thorpe, Khoshimov, Fisk, Bambrook, Norville

With Thorpe and Khoshimov replacing the injured Goodfellow and Wilson, Fairway was again forced to include a youth teamer on the bench - 15-year old Chris Knight called into the squad. Worksop began brightly - Simeon Bambrook close on 7, and again on 14, his efforts sandwiching a volley from Wharton that, on another day, would have given the midfielder his first goal in a Worksop shirt. On 20 though after almost unrelenting pressure, Miles Thorpe made the breakthrough - crashing home Khoshimov's cross on the volley. Worksop dominated the first half, and could have had a couple more goals - Fisk and Norville both close before the break. Blyth began the second half a little brighter - Walsh forcing Rogers into action on 51, before Thorpe cracked the post for Worksop on 64. Fairway made his first change soon after - bringing Cropper on for Bambrook, and on 73, Dene Cropper netted the second of the game, tapping home in a penalty box scramble. 3 minutes later, as Blyth pushed forward, Dene Cropper scored again - again from close range after Thompson had blocked from Fisk. Worksop could have had a hatful - Fisk, Wharton, Norville and Cropper all having chances in the final 10 minutes, before Cropper completed the game in clear agony after an unneccasery challenge 2 minutes from time. Onwards and upwards for Worksop - now just two games away from the First Round Proper of the FA Cup.

More prize money - £5000 - for progression to the Fourth Qualifying Round, but it came at a cost. Two-goal hero Dene Cropper fractured ribs in the dying moments of Saturday's win - and would be out for a month. Cropper's injury was quickly picked up on by the local media - and during a post match interview with local radio station Sherwood FM, Fairway was asked how badly his men would miss Cropper. Whilst non-commital, his answer of "We'll miss Dene, but I feel we have cover" seemed to go down well with the supporters.

Monday's Cup Draw brought news of a trip either way - Worksop would travel to the winners of Merthyr Tydfil v Cambridge City , who played out an all-action 2-2 draw in Wales on Saturday.

On Tuesday afternoon, as Fairway's men set out for their evening game at Vauxhall Motors, Ryan Davis completed his £1000 move to Hednesford .

With Cropper out, 'forgotten man' Blake Norton made the bench, again alongside youth team midfielder Knight. Worksop picked up an early boost when, 7 minutes in Lee Woodyat got himself sent off for an 'agricultural' challenge on Miles Thorpe. Worksop began brightly, especially given the man advantage - Bambrook and Norville both having chances well saved. Just before the break Worksop looked odds-on to open the scoring - Simeon Bambrook dinking the ball just over the bar on the stroke of half time. With no breakthrough by the hour mark, Fairway made a change on 65 - taking off Thorpe for Nicholson, with Davies moving into midfield as Worksop looked to shake things up. Finally, on 72, the home side's stubborn resistance was broken. Wharton's far-post corner was just failed to be cut out by McDermott, allowing 'supersub' Steve Nicholson to prod the ball home. At this stage Fairway hoped the floodgates would open, but in fact it was the Motormen who came closest to levelling - Tamm hitting the side-netting, before David Cuminsky caused panic on 82, Rogers coming to his side's rescue - and Worksop able to hold on for a well-deserved win.

Tuesday's results also caused the first managerial casulaty of the season in Conference North, Altringham dismissing Graham Heathcote on Wednesday morning. In news closer to home, Cambridge City defeated Merthyr, giving Fairway's men a trip to the Fenlands in the Fourth Qualifying Round of the FA Cup.

Friday however brought bad news - Jason Norville picked up a groin strain in training, ruling the in-form Trinidadian out for a fortnight - leaving Fairway with just two fit strikers for Saturday's visit of Barrow.

With Mark Wilson passing a late fitness test, Fairway decided on a gamble - with winger Khoshimov asked to operate as a striker - perhaps a hammer-blow to Blake Norton's hopes of regaining Fairway's favour. Although the first half began slowly, the Uzbekistani soon had a chance to repay Fairway's faith - but blazed over from just inside the box on 29. Barrow too had opportunities to break - the dangerous Ian Kilford having a shot well saved by Rogers on 42. At half time Fairway again went with Nicholson - replacing O'Callaghan at the back, before Barrow began to press - Maxfield's cross cut out by Rogers on 75. It would prove to be the only chance of the second half - neither side particularly good value for the impressivley bouyant crowd. They - and Worksop - would leave disapointed in a game that promised much but delivered little.

Fairway was disapointed to note Andrew Fisk limping towards the end, an injury which physio Tomlinson would later diagnose as a bruised thigh, keeping him out for five days - but, fortunatley, unlikely to miss Saturday's Cup trip to Cambridge.

Monday - another day, another Cup Draw. This time, the First Round of the FA Trophy, a competition which Worksop have a slightly better chance of winning than it's more illustrious sister, the FA Cup. Minnows Clitheroe would provide their opponents, with Fairway's men due to travel to Shawbridge on Saturday the 11th.

Thursday brought Andy Collett into the mangerial business for the first time - the one-time Middlesborough 'keeper securing his first job in football - much to the disdain of 'pundits' who declared him too inexperienced to make his time at Altringham a success.

Cambridge City v Worksop Town - FA Cup Fourth Round Qualifying

Worksop; 4-1-3-2; Rogers, Dempsey, Davies, O'Callaghan, Dudgeon, Wharton, Thorpe, Wilson*, Fisk, Bambrook, Khosimov

Subs; Nicholson, Fisher (GK), Jackson, Knight, Norton

With Andrew Fisk fit again, Fairway was able to name an unchanged side - although with Cambridge City lying 8th in the Conference South, Fairway considered the game something of a tricky tie. As expected, Cambridge set about the visitors, with Simpson and Stevenson close in the opening exchanges - something of a reward for supporters who had trekked out on a cold, wet afternoon. Worksop's first effort came on 16 - Miles Thorpe shooting over - but on 40 Nightingale really should have put City ahead. Worksop too were not without close calls - Bambrook's diving header flying just over after Fisk's initial effort had been blocked in injury time. Thorpe made way for Nicholson at the break and Worksop began to look brighter - Khoshimov and Wilson both close before the hour mark. By now Cambridge looked far brighter - Dale Binns should have scored, before Stevenson saw a shot tipped just wide. Bambrook made way for Jackson in attack for the final 15 minutes, but to no avail - with the pitch beginning to cut up, play became scrappy - a replay at Babbage Way the inevitable outcome.

Monday - the draw for the First Round Proper of the FA Cup. Should Worksop progress, Fairway's men will face League Two outfit Swansea City at home - a potential moneyspinner.

Worksop Town v Cambridge City - FA Cup Fourth Round Qualifying Replay

Worksop; 4-1-3-2; Rogers, Dempsey, Davies, O'Callaghan, Dudgeon, Wharton, Thorpe, Wilson*, Fisk, Bambrook, Jackson

Subs; Nicholson, Fisher (GK), Khoshimov, Knight, Norton

One change for Wednesday's replay - Jackson handed his first start of the season in attack, with Khoshimov dropping to the bench. Another blow for those in the Norton camp... On a bitterly cold, wet evening Cambridge began the brighter - and when Wharton slipped inside the box, tripping Stevenson, Stuart Niven made no mistake from the spot on 11. The visitors never let up - Riddle having an effort tipped over the bar on 29 before Fairway rang the changes at the break - replacing Fisk and Thorpe, both of whom had knocks, for Nicholson and Khoshimov. The latter lasted all of 6 minutes before he too departed - Jackson's versatility coming in handy, with Norton replacing the injured winger and Jackson dropping into defence, with Davies moving up to the left of the midfield trio. The second half was not a footballing specatacle - although Davies could have levelled when he hit a cross-shot over on 63 - but this time, there would be no comeback, as Cambridge City progressed to the First Round of the Cup.

Out of the Cup - and Fairway left feeling deflated. Azzizhon Khoshimov would be out for six days with a gashed leg, but Worksop's Cup adventures - in the top competition at least - would be over for another year.

Worksop Town v Cambridge City - FA Trophy First Round

Worksop; 4-1-3-2; Rogers, Dempsey, Davies, O'Callaghan, Dudgeon, Wharton, Thorpe, Wilson*, Fisk, Bambrook, Norville

Subs; Nicholson, Fisher (GK), Jackson, Knight, Norton

Fairway's men would get an immediate opportunity to bounce back - three days later, they were in Cup action again, although this time in the FA Trophy. Jason Norville was able to return after passing a lunchtime fitness test, although Fairway hoped his star hitman wouldn't be needed for the whole 90 minutes. Jackson made way, dropping onto the bench to replace the injured Khoshimov. On a wet, cold afternoon Clitheroe looked bright early on, Hutchinson shooting over on 4, but began to fade as the first half progressed. Worksop's first real chance came on 39 - Thorpe's cross headed wide by Norville - but by half time, it became clear that the visitors were in command. Fairway replaced O'Callaghan with Nicholson at the break - and five minutes later, his side made the breakthrough. A quick break down the left - Davies' long ball and some inspired running by Thorpe created the opportunity, and when Bambrook squared, Jason Norville made no mistake with a driven effort into the bottom right hand corner. Norville made way to a standing ovation from the away support on 62, replaced by Norton - but three minutes later a defensive mixup saw the home side level. A swirling Gray cross from the right looked no trouble for Rogers, but the 'keeper fumbled into the path of Goodman, who had his shot charged down by Dempsey, before the ball fell to John Hewitt, who netted at the second attempt. Worksop came close to bouncing back on 68 - Norton seeing a shot drift wide, before the same player beat one defender before wasting a second opportunity moments later. Thorpe too was guilty of some lax finishing - his shot on 75 tipped over when it would have been easier to score. Finally, on 83, Blake Norton did make amends for his earlier errors - steering home Thorpe's low cross from the left. It proved a crushing blow for Clitheroe, and right at the death, Simeon Bambrook met Norton's cross with a sizzling half-volley to kill off the Unibond League outfit - and ensure Worksop's progression to Round Two.

An immediate consequence of Stafford Rangers' 2-1 win over Chorley in the Trophy was the dismissal of manager Phil Robinson . There's no accounting for the mindset of football Chairmen, pondered Fairway as he flicked through Sunday's Non-League Paper.

The £2000 prize money would hardly go a long way, but it was a welcome bonus all the same. Tuesday's Second Round draw saw Worksop landed with a trip southwards - playing the winner of East Thurrock v Banstead .

Worksop Town v Hucknall - Conference North Game 11

Worksop; 4-1-3-2; Rogers, Dempsey, Davies, O'Callaghan, Dudgeon, Wharton, Thorpe, Wilson*, Fisk, Bambrook, Norville

Subs; Nicholson, Cross (GK), Jackson, Khoshimov, Norton

The return to fitness of Azzizhon Khoshimov brought an end to young Chris Knight's run with the first team - but his youth team colleague Matt Cross again found himself called into the squad with Jason Fisher ineligble - as part of his loan deal, Fairway had promised that the 17-year old wouldn't play against his parent club. For a miserable Tuesday evening, Fairway was pleased to note a healthy crowd - and they almost saw a real rarity, when on 4 minutes defender Brian O'Callaghan came close to scoring - grazing the bar with a header from Wharton's corner. Both sides had their chances in the first half - Norville, Fisk and Wilson all close, whilst Hucknall saw an Asher effort bravely cleared off the line by Nathan Wharton. Fairway made one change at the break, replacing a tiring - and booked - Bambrook with Norton - then immediatley saw his side come close again, with Fisk firing over on 49. With referee Lesley a particularly harsh character, the second half failed to flow as the first had - Norton, Dempsey and Wharton all going into the book for Worksop - joining Bambrook and Norville who had their names' taken in the first half, whilst Hucknall pair Bacon and Todd both saw yellow. Norville had perhaps Worksop's best chance on 74 - his header hitting the bar - before Thorpe was replaced by Khoshimov. With neither side able to make a breakthrough, it looked as though things were heading for a tame finish. Fairway tried to spur his side on, but to little effect - and indeed the only real action of the last five minutes was amongst the medical staff - Norton helped from the field on 88 after a clash with Todd, to be replaced by Jackson. The draw a fair result.

Blake Norton's injury was later confirmed as merely a bruised rib, which would keep him out for around 3 days, as opposed to the broken rib initially feared by physio Tomlinson. In other injury-related news, Marc Goodfellow returned to training on Wednesday morning - but is not yet match fit, and is by no means certain to be available for Worksop's next League outing in midweek.

Wednesday's FA Trophy replays saw East Thurrock beat Banstead 2-1 - handing Worksop a trip to Essex, and their Rookery Hill home.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/football - Watford - Friday 12th November 2004

'Hitman set for Permanent Switch?'

'Watford manager Ray Lewington has confirmed this lunchtime that the club have accepted an offer from Worksop Town for striker Jason Norville . Norville, 21, has been on loan at the Conference North side since the start of the season, and has been a real hit at Babbage Way - scoring 7 goals in 12 starts for the Tigers.

Worksop Town manager Stuart Fairway told the BBC; "Jason has been a long-term target of mine, ever since we signed him on loan. Hopefully we can agree personal terms within the next few days and make his switch here a permanent one"

Norville, twice called up to the Trinidad & Tobago squad, played 14 times for Watford, scoring once, before making the move to Worksop over the summer.'

</div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Monday morning brought confirmation of the news that Tigers fans - and their manager - had been hoping for since day one. Jason Norville signed a £400-a-week contract until 2008, putting him on the same level of wages as top earners Marc Goodfellow and Dene Cropper . A day later however, Norville was off to link up with the Trinidad & Tobago squad for their must-win World Cup Qualifyer against Mexico.

Moor Green v Worksop - Conference North Game 12

Worksop; 4-1-3-2; Rogers, Dempsey, Davies, O'Callaghan, Dudgeon, Wharton, Goodfellow, Wilson*, Fisk, Bambrook, Norton

Subs; Nicholson, Fisher (GK), Thorpe, Khoshimov, Jackson

It meant he would miss out on Worksop's trip to the slightly less exotic Moor Green - Norton handed his first start of the season, with Marc Goodfellow also passed fit to return after his groin injury. Thorpe dropped to the bench, with young 'keeper Jason Fisher also returning - eligble to play in any game unless against parent club Hucknall. As was becoming something of a running theme, the match kicked off to a swirling mass of wind and rain - but the home side quickly adapted to the conditions, and began by far the brighter - Molyneaux seeing an inswinging corner tipped back over the top by Rogers. On 19, the inevitable happened when Moor Green took the lead - David Foy heading home a Wilkinson corner. Worksop did look brighter after conceding - first Goodfellow fired over on 30, before Bambrook saw an effort charged down on the stroke of half time. With Fisk carrying a knock, Fairway replaced the loanee with Miles Thorpe at the interval, and at the back replaced O'Callaghan with Nicholson. On 61 Worksop again carved out a fine opportunity - Goodfellow's ranged pass finding Norton in space, only for the striker to shoot wide with the goal at his mercy. He wasn't the only one who should have netted - on 70 Williams missed a sitter for Moor Green. 11 minutes later however, it was all over - Neil Davis firing home from an Owen cross to put the home side into the comfort zone. Norton could have had a consolation at the death - again let down by his finishing - leaving visiting supporters' collective mood as miserable as the weather.

Jason Norville didn't have the best of times in Mexico. Not only was he not selected for the match, but Trinidad & Tobago crashed 6-1 to Mexico, leaving them out of the Qualification race for Germany 2006.

Fairway was at least able to welcome Dene Cropper back on Thursday after a month out with fractured ribs. With Norville also available, Fairway considered changing things around in a bid to return to winning ways at the weekend.

Runcorn FC Halton v Worksop Town - Conference North Game 13

Worksop; 4-1-3-2; Rogers, Nicholson, Davies, Dempsey, Dudgeon, Wharton, Goodfellow, Wilson*, Fisk, Cropper, Norville

Subs; O'Callaghan, Fisher (GK), Thorpe, Khoshimov, Bambrook

In fact there would be three changes - O'Callaghan, Bambrook and Norton all out, with Nicholson, Cropper and Norville replacing them. At the back Paul Dempsey moved into the middle, with Nicholson in his usual right back berth. Another change from the norm was the weather - one of those classic winter afternoons for football - cold and crisp, with the tea bar doing a roaring trade. On 11 minutes though any visiting supporters holding their mugs would have no doubt covered themselves in the steaming hot beverage - when Marc Goodfellow announced his return to action with a sizzling strike from 35 yards out - planting the ball past 'keeper McMillan after recieving a Nicholson pass. But for some brave defending on 24 by Spearitt - literally throwing himself in front of the shot - Goodfellow would have had a second. On 38 though it was Runcorn's turn to celebrate - Durkan's cross helped home by Ged Courtney in 'bread & butter' circumstances for the prolific striker. Three minutes later, Worksop regained their lead - Dempsey's flick, Fisk's through ball - and Jason Norville's first goal since signing permanently for Worksop. He could have had a second after the break - half time passing with no substitutions - but blazed over on 47. Worksop were definatley looking the better of the two sides - although on 68 Leon Williams was allowed too much space in the box, but could only shoot straight at a grateful Rogers, who continued to bark at his defenders as he thumped the ball upfield. After running himself into the ground, Goodfellow made way for Thorpe on 72, whilst Dene Cropper also came off for Simeon Bambrook - he too tiring after a long spell on the sidelines. Runcorn's biggest threat, Mike Garrity, fired wide four minutes later - and it would prove the final chance for the home side to level. Those that had stayed until the very end were rewarded - deep in injury time skipper Mark Wilson sealed victory for Worksop with a fine volley on his weaker left peg after Bambrook's cross had evaded the attentions of 'keeper McMillan. Back in business!

Sunday saw another dismissal - Kettering's Kevin Wilson given the boot after a 3-0 reverse at fellow strugglers Stalybridge. Moving up a few Divisions, Milwall also bade farewell to Dennis Wise - the ex England midfielder sacked after a dreadful campaign that has seen the Lions pick up just 6 points from 16 games.

With a game on Wednesday, Fairway decided to take time out on Tuesday evening to watch his beloved Brighton in action at Reading. Securing a pair of tickets, he drove down with captain Mark Wilson - hoping to see the Seagulls secure a much-needed victory. It began well enough - Mark McCammon opening the scoring - but then came the all too familiar story - Albion capitulated, conceding four - and leaving Fairway and Wilson with a long and disapointed trip home.

Worksop Town v Ashton United - Conference North Game 14

Worksop; 4-1-3-2; Rogers, Nicholson, Davies, Dempsey, Dudgeon, Wharton, Goodfellow, Wilson*, Fisk, Cropper, Norville

Subs; O'Callaghan, Fisher (GK), Thorpe, Khoshimov, Bambrook

An unchanged side for Worksop's first home game in some time - Norville making his home bow since that loan deal became a bargain £1000 permanent switch. A niggly opening on a wet pitch saw Mark Wilson booked and both Cropper and Wharton warned. Ashton began brightly - Anderson's deflected free kick well held by Rogers on 5, before Paul Osborne fired wide 10 minutes later. On 22, things got worse for Worksop - after Dempsey had upended Jones, Nathan Wharton got himself booked for dissent - and then continued to complain, giving referee Lloyd little choice but to dismiss him. Fairway was fuming - forced to reshuffle his pack with Fisk dropping back into the holding role and Davies coming up from defence, leaving three men at the back. It was somewhat of a suprise then when Worksop took the lead six minutes later - Dempsey's cross fired home - perhaps with a slight deflection - by skipper Mark Wilson . Only brave goalkeeping by Johnston denied a second on 33 - diving at Norville's feet to grab the ball. On the stroke of half time though football proved it could still be a cruel mistress - 'keeper Kristian Rogers left with his head in his hands after fumbling Paul Garvey's header into his own net. Two changes for Worksop at the break - O'Callaghan replacing Nicholson and Khoshimov replacing Davies. The home side began brightly - Fisk, Norville and Wilson all having chances in the opening 20 minutes of the second period. After Ashton threatened to stir - Hardy heading wide on 64 - Worksop did put the ball in the net a minute later, only for Norville's effort to be ruled offside. Finally, on 76, Worksop did score - this time legitimatley. Goodfellow's pinpoint passing picked out Cropper, who threaded the ball through for Jason Norville to skip past Jones and notch up goal number 8 for the season. Ashton threw men forward, but it would all be in vain - Worksop holding on for their second victory in a row.

On his way to a stunning Man Of The Match performance, midfield maestro Marc Goodfellow picked up another knock - bruised ribs, keeping him out for around six days. Nathan Wharton would also miss the next game - but for very different reasons. Fairway was furious with his defensive midfielder - handing him an official warning as to his future conduct, which Wharton accepted with apologies.

After a quiet few days Worksop travelled to Essex on Saturday morning - the FA Trophy Second Round awaiting them.

East Thurrock v Worksop Town - FA Trophy Second Round

Worksop; 4-1-3-2; Rogers, Nicholson, Davies, Dempsey, Dudgeon, Fisk, Thorpe, Wilson*, Norville, Cropper, Bambrook

Subs; O'Callaghan, Fisher (GK), Jackson, Khoshimov, Norton

With Fisk dropping into the defensive midfield role and Goodfellow injured, Fairway gambled with Jason Norville - asking the striker to play in a deeper, midfield role, whilst still able to roam forward. This change allowed Bambrook to the start - with Worksop's three front-line strikers in action at the same time - against, on paper at least, considerably weaker opposition. Worksop began brightly - Simeon Bambrook having the ball pinched off his toes by 'keeper Knight on 10 minutes, before the Tigers really should have opened the scoring three minutes later. A Norville pass put Miles Thorpe away, only for Robinson to haul the midfielder to the floor. Mark Wilson stepped up - and blasted his penalty high and wide, much to the delight of the home supporters. By now chances were coming thick and fast for the visitors - Norville (17), Bambrook (30) and Fisk (44) all trying and failing to put the Tigers ahead. At the break Fairway replaced Norville with Khoshimov, a more natural midfielder - but his first action was to get booked on 54. East Thurrock slowly began to stem the flow of Worksop attacks, and on 62, grabbed the opener - Adam Skelton poking home after Clarke had seen a shot blocked. Worksop looked shellshocked - Ford could have had a second when he headed wide on 71 - but 8 minutes from time, Worksop drew level - much to the (temporary, as it would prove) relief of the visiting supporters - when Dene Cropper fired home Thorpe's cross to the near post. All of five minutes later, East Thurrock struck again - Steve Clarke volleying home Ford's centre to leave Worksop looking for excuses - and a furious Fairway looking for the way home.

Out of the FA Trophy by December - not exactly the masterplan Fairway had in mind. If there was a plus side, it was that everyone had come through the game unscathed - certainly a bonus given the injury problems of late - but on Monday Andrew Fisk was ruled out for a week after falling awkwardly in training and spraining a wrist. It never rains...

Worksop Observer - Football - Tuesday 30th November 2005

'Tigers To Open Talks Over Contract 4'

' Stuart Fairway has told the Observer that he intends to open talks with four players who are out of contract at the end of the season. Defenders Kevin Davies, Steve Nicholson, James Dudgeon and club captain Mark Wilson have all been offered new deals. Centre-Half Brian O'Callaghan , also out of contract at the end of the season, has been told by Fairway that his future is 'on hold', pending decisions from the other players.

This has led to specualtion that the former Barnsley man, who lost his regular slot earlier in the season, could be on his way out of Babbage Way. Fairway refused to confirm or deny reports that various other clubs are said to be circling for the Irishman's signature.

Worksop Town v Alfreton - Conference North Game 15

Worksop; 4-1-3-2; Rogers, Nicholson, Davies, Dempsey, Dudgeon, Wharton, Thorpe, Wilson*, Khoshimov, Cropper, Norville

Subs; O'Callaghan, Fisher (GK), Jackson, Bambrook, Norton

With Norville returning to the attack, and Wharton back after suspension, Fairway moved Khoshimov into the midfield, replacing the injured Fisk, with Bambrook back amongst the substitutes. A bitterly cold, wet Tuesday night reminded everybody that Nottinghamshire would soon be in the grip of another winter - early play perhaps reflected this, with Cropper slipping as he shaped to shoot on 3 minutes, before Wilson saw an effort skid wide moments later. Worksop definatley had most of the early pressure, and on 25, took the lead - Khoshimov threading the ball through for Jason Norville to run on and beat 'keeper Saxby. It took until the 34th minute for Alfreton to register their first chance - Godber heading straight at 'keeper Rogers - but on the stroke of half time, they came even closer - Kevin Davies blocking Bradshaw's cross-shot on the line. At the break Fairway replaced Nicholson with O'Callaghan, with Dempsey moving to full back. Seven minutes after the break the Tigers should have doubled their lead - Norville winning a penalty, only for Khoshimov to fire his spot kick straight at Saxby. Godber - Alfreton's biggest goal threat - missed a golden opportunity four minutes later - shooting wide after breaking through. With Worksop still in command, Fairway replaced Cropper with Bambrook and Wilson with Norton two minutes from time - and immediatley saw his side win another penalty after Alfreton sub Knapper tripped O'Callaghan after a corner. Again Uzbekistani winger Khoshimov stepped up - and again he missed - this time sending his effort high and wide. Fortunatley there would be no sting in the tail - Worksop holding on for all three points - but Khoshimov's days of taking penalties are surely over!

With the last game returning no injuries, Fairway was disapointed to note that Kevin Davies pulled up in training on Wednesday with a heel injury - ruling him out for five days. With the next match however not coming up for 11 days, Fairway hoped that the full back - as well as other injury victims Fisk and Goodfellow - would be fit to return for that visit of Southport.

Better news came on Wednesday afternoon - James Dudgeon becoming the first to put pen to paper on a new contract, signing a £150-a week, 3 year contract, keeping him at the club until the end of the 2007/08 season. A day later Steve Nicholson signed a 1-year extension to his deal, whilst also on Thursday club captain Mark Wilson agreed a 2-year deal, giving him 'footballing pensioner' status - taking him over his 35th birthday as a Worksop player.

Kevin Davies became the last of the quartet to sign on Friday morning - the fullback confirming his intent to stay at Babbage Way until at least 2007. With Fairway handing him the captaincy in Wilson's absence, it was clear to the fullback that his manager thought highly of his abilities - something which, Davies told local media, made him 'absolutley certain' to sign.

Saturday's FA Cup Second Round day unfortunatley saw the end for the four remaining regional Conference sides - Conference South side Grays went down 3-0 at Aldershot, Conference North outfit Nuneaton lost a 6-goal thriller 4-2 to Stevenage Borough, whilst Barrow were an injury-time winner away from taking Scunthorpe back to Holker Street. After playing their part in a rather surreal - how often does the same player miss two penalties in a single game? - clash with Worksop, Alfreton lost out 1-0 to League Two runaway leaders Oxford. Fairway's beloved Brighton & Hove Albion continued their run of woeful form - albeit in the League, rather than the Cup - going down 3-1 at Ipswich.

The return from injury of Andrew Fisk and Marc Goodfellow couldn't have come at a better time - and combined with Kevin Davies' return, Fairway could return to his first choice lineup at the weekend - further injuries, of course, permitting.

Wednesday saw Fairway again delve into the transfer market. With scout Shaun Hird still scouring the country for talent, veteran defender Les Robinson was brought to the manager's attention. At 37, Robinson is hardly one for the future - on the pitch at least. Off it, Fairway considered the centre back to have a potentially great future in coaching. With just himself and assistant manager Peter Price on the club's backroom staff currently, Fairway had long been keen to add a specialised coach, and one who could combine it with playing as well would be a real boost. A veteran of 640 games, Robinson, currently at Banbury United , is best remembered for his 10 years at Oxford, but also took in spells at Doncaster, Mansfield and Stockport during his professional career. With just £370 left in the transfer kitty, Fairway had to hope that Banbury would accept a nominal fee for the big defender.

Of all the times for Banbury to agree to the switch - and for Robinson to arrive to talk terms - Saturday morning, with Worksop at home to Southport in a matter of hours, was hardly the best. Still, Fairway made his potential player/coach aware of his aims - inviting him to stay and watch the Tigers in action whilst he mulled over the £150 a week, 4 year contract offer on the table. At this stage in his career, Fairway considered it an offer that Robinson may well find hard to turn down - especially with the promise of a major coaching role available.

Worksop's final home match before Christmas inevitably brought out the Santa hats - although in the cold, wet conditions, anything that added extra warmth would be a welcome release to those in the seats and on the terraces at a packed Babbage Way. The Tigers set about the visitors early on - Marc Goodfellow striking the bar on 3 minutes - but on 11, Southport were only denied by some brave defending - first Nicholson blocking Baker's effort inside the six yard box, then Paul Dempsey hooking Powell's rebound off the line. If that was something for Worksop's younger fans to be inspired by, on 23 minutes Jason Norville did something which hopefully didn't impress any home supporters - young or old. It began inocuously enough - Steve Nicholson booked for a trip on Daly - but then Norville waded in - first getting told to go away by the referee, then picking up a booking for not keeping quiet - and finally, despite attempts to hold him back by teammates, talking himself into a second yellow card - and an early bath. After the fracas Fairway reverted to a 3-1-3-2 formation - Bambrook replacing the booked Nicholson and moving up front with Cropper. Ironically enough, the Sandgrounders player involved in the inital incident - Steve Daly - tripped Wilson on 39, leading to a booking for him - and a goal for Worksop - Wilson's free kick into the feet of Andrew Fisk , who drilled home a fine shot on the turn to beat 'keeper Dickinson. Whilst there were no changes for either side at the break, Southport returned clearly fired up - and with their extra man advantage, ground out an excellent chance on 49 - Fearns really should have done better than to head Daly's centre wide of the post. Just before the hour Fairway made his final two changes - mindful of the need to keep fitness levels up with 10 men doing the job of 11. Khoshimov and O'Callaghan benefitted, with goalscorer Fisk and James Dudgeon departing. A goal for the visitors though looked inevitable - and when Bambrook tripped Davis 25 yards out, Jimmy Williams made no mistake with a rifled free kick. Enter Dene Cropper - three minutes later his superb endeavour carved out an opportunity from nothing, and Mark Wilson was in the right place to steer Worksop back into the lead. Southport were stunned - a shift to an all-out attacking formation reaped little benefit, before Dene Cropper deservedly got his name on the scoresheet, in emphatic fashion - a diving header to connect with Wharton's cut back giving Worksop an unlikley two goal advantage. It would be closer - right at the death Southport skipper Farrell Kilbane met a Williams corner with a bullet header - but after coming close to shooting themselves in the foot early on, the Tigers held on to leave their army of supporters heading for the Christmas shopping queues with a smile on their faces.

Sunday morning would be no lie-in for Jason Norville . A furious Fairway hauled the striker in - handing him a formal warning. The striker immediatley apologised, claiming he 'lost control' at the treatment of teammate Nicholson - who, ironically enough, didn't complain about his card. With that, Fairway considered the matter closed - but for the fact that he would have to do without his star striker for one match through suspension.

Ex-Kettering boss Kevin Wilson was back in the management game on Monday morning - appointed as manager of struggling Stafford Rangers , hopefully to lead them away from the drop zone that they are currently on the edge of.

Tuesday would not prove to be a good day at Babbage Way. Firstly transfer target Les Robinson informed Fairway that he wasn't prepared to risk a move whilst he still remained an integral part of the Banbury United first team - but far more seriously, the evening's training session brought woe for goalkeeper Kristian Rogers . Fairway had long feared serious injury to the 24-year old after allowing veteran Ian Bowling to leave the club earlier in the season - but with his 'keeper now ruled out for 3 months with a dislocated shoulder, that worry became reality. With the promising, but inexperienced, Jason Fisher - a 17-year old loanee from Hucknall - on the club's books for the rest of the season, Fairway at least had a 'keeper he could call on - but still planned to search the market for another option.

After having a second - identical - offer for Les Robinson accepted on Friday morning, Fairway raised the stakes a little - offering the defender an extra £100 a week, bringing the offer to £250 a week over 4 years, plus a substanital bonus package. This time, things looked - to Fairway's eyes - a little more promising. Fairway also headed to Brighton & Hove Albion on Friday - having an 3-month loan offer accepted for young 'keeper Chris May .

Redditch Town v Worksop - Conference North Game 17

Worksop; 4-1-3-2; Fisher, Nicholson, Davies, Dempsey, Dudgeon, Wharton, Goodfellow, Wilson*, Fisk, Cropper, Bambrook

Subs; O'Callaghan, Cross (GK), Thorpe, Khoshimov, Norton

For now though, youth team stopper Matt Cross again stepped into the breach - or at least, the sub 'keepers berth - with Jason Fisher handed not only his Worksop debut, but also his first appearance in Senior football for the trip to Conference North's bottom club. Another Milestone for Worksop came for James Dudgeon - the defender marking his 50th career league appearance at a wet and windy Valley Stadium. Up front, Bambrook replaced the suspended Norville - although with Redditch leaking goals like a sieve, Fairway wasn't too concerned about his absence. Almost immediatley Fairway felt guilty of underestimating Redditch. They began with real flair and invention - Norman Sylla volleyed wide on 10 before Fisher was forced into a save from Rickards on 13. Two minutes later, the youngster's dream of a debut clean sheet was over - Norman Sylla poking home at the far post from Cowe's cross. A very physical outfit, the home side succeeded in frustrating Fairway's men defensivley, whilst also pushing forward - Hollis and King both seeing Fisher make impressive stops. It took until the stroke of half time for Worksop to carve out their first real opportunity - but Dene Cropper, on mecurial form last week, dragged a shot wide with the goal gaping. Redditch's aformentioned physical style had taken it's toll - neither Bambrook nor Wharton considered fit enough to return after the break - replaced by Norton and Thorpe respectivley. Finally the Tigers began to get into the game - Redditch 'keeper Anstiss pushing away Cropper's cross-cum-shot on 52, before box-to-box midfielder King hooked Thorpe's dangerous cross away on the hour mark. With Redditch - perhaps paying the price for their all-action start - beginning to tire, Worksop looked to take advantage - Goodfellow and Dempsey guilty of 'seeing the headlines' with efforts from distance when the simpler ball was on. On 76 though it really should have been all over - a rare slip from Davies allowed Sylla in - but three yards out, he bundled the ball straight at a grateful Fisher. It proved fatal - on 83 'forgotten man' Blake Norton broke the offside trap from Wilson's pass to bury the ball beyond 'keeper Anstiss - and three minutes later Miles Thorpe headed Norton's cross home. It was cruel for the home side - who had failed to show to Fairway exactly why they are in such trouble at the bottom - but for Worksop, three more very valuable points in the bid to cement themselves into a playoff position that had looked unlikely at the start of the campaign.

Mark Wilson's man of the match performance had cost him - not only did the midfield man look tired after the match, but he also picked up a painful stubbed toe, keeping him out for 5 days.

Monday brought a double blow - with Brighton's Chris May rejecting a loan switch to Worksop out of hand, whilst Les Robinson again repeated his intent not to leave Banbury whilst still a regular first team fixture. It was too much for Fairway - who immediatley broke off his interest in both players, and decided against searching again before Worksop's next game.

Harrogate Town v Worksop - Conference North Game 18

Worksop; 4-1-3-2; Fisher, Nicholson, Davies*, Dempsey, Dudgeon, Wharton, Goodfellow, Fisk, Khoshimov, Cropper, Norville

Subs; O'Callaghan, Cross (GK), Thorpe, Jackson, Norton

That would come just two days later, with Worksop's final game before Christmas - and a trip to Harrogate. After Norton's heroics against Redditch, the transfer-listed striker retained his place on the bench at the expense of Simeon Bambrook - with Jason Norville, back after a ban, returning to the starting lineup. In Wilson's absence, Kevin Davies was as usual handed the captain's armband. At a sparsley populated - but cold and wet - Weatherby Road, Harrogate began brightly - Fisher denying Smith on 14 before veteran Lee Phillpot, making his 400th career appearance, smashed over the bar 4 minutes later. Worksop's best of the opening exchanges came on 25 - Norville putting Cropper through, only for the left-footer to fire wide. The visitors broke again on 36 - but this time, made the pressure count - Andrew Fisk nodding home Paul Dempsey's deep cross. Whilst not exactly comfortable, Worksop took thier advantage into the interval - before a very slow start to the second half. Finally, on 69 James Dudgeon struck Worksop's second to liven proceedings up - Wharton's short free kick drilled past 'keeper Pettinger. After a brace of harrogate changes saw Donaldson come close to pulling one back on 72, Fairway made a triple change - bringing on Thorpe, Norton and O'Callaghan, with Goodfellow, Cropper and Wharton making way. Inevitably Worksop took time to adjust to the changes - time which Harrogate took advantage of to perfection, with James Turley striking an equaliser on 74. Worksop though would not lie down - and within 9 minutes, had retaken the lead - Andrew Fisk meeting a cross that originally looked intended for Jason Norville with a bullet header to grab his second of the game. It finally killed off Harrogate - Thorpe could have added to their woes with a shot that went wide in injury time - but another win for Worksop will certainly give Fairway plenty of encouragement as thoughts turn to the festivities.

Whilst Worksop moved up to third - or, more optimistically, joint top on 34 points with leaders Vauxhall Motors and second placed Nuneaton , Kettering appointed ex-Notts County boss Ian Richardson as the replacement to Kevin Wilson, sacked earlier in the season.

Fairway recieved a welcome early Christmas present on Thursday - with Mark Wilson reporting fit for training in what was otherwise - as, perhaps, to be expected at this time of year, a quiet week.

Worksop v Worcester City - Conference North Game 19

Worksop; 4-1-3-2; Fisher, Nicholson, Davies, Dempsey, Dudgeon, Wharton, Goodfellow, Wilson*, Fisk, Cropper, Norville

Subs; O'Callaghan, Cross (GK), Thorpe, Khoshimov, Norton

With Wilson replacing Khoshimov in the only change to the starting lineup, Fairway kept his side relativley settled for the big Boxing Day clash against 8th placed Worcester. It had not been a white Christmas in Nottinghamshire - instead it had been a wet one, and Boxing Day was no exception - rain falling steadily as play began. Worcester started brightly - Forrest hitting a free kick over the bar in the second minute, before Fisher did well to deny Moore on 7. With the slipperly surface playing havoc with passing and shooting Andrew Wharton could have been forgiven his 21st minute effort that skidded wide - but no amount of rain could hide Danny McDonnell's shame on 23 - the Worcester 'keeper rounded by Fisk before making a desperate attempt to slide tackle the midfielder - but only succeeding in knocking the ball into his own, unguarded net. After this blow Worcester came out strongly - Snape finding the side netting on 31 - before finding his way into the referee's notebook for the second time on 34 - dismissed after a foul on Norville. Things didn't go all Worksop's way - losing skipper Wilson to injury on the stroke of half time. Khoshimov replaced him - and scored five minutes later. A fantastic Goodfellow run and cross led to Azzizhon Khoshimov's first goal in competitive football for the Tigers leaving Worcester with a mountain to climb. Things would only get worse for the visitors - on 58, unfortunate 'keeper McConnell limped off injured before another sending off - McDonald on 67 - saw City reduced to 9 men. 11 minutes later, 9 men cruelly became 8 - sub 'keeper Lewis Sykers sucumbing to a knock - leaving left back Les Hines as a stand-in 'keeper. While Hines tried his best, it was not enough to prevent Jason Norville knocking home Khoshimov's cross to claim a third two minutes from time. Few - home fans at least - will forget this one in a hurry!

With his side up to second, Fairway had recieved the perfect Christmas present. Who would have thought it six months ago? - certainly not the manager, who, he admitted privatley, would have been happy with 10th after the first month of the campaign.

As always though his delight wasn't allowed to go totally without problems - Mark Wilson ruled out for a fortnight with a groin strain - whilst physio Tomlinson also advised Fairway rest Paul Dempsey and Kevin Davies - both, he said, looking a little more tired than they should be.

Stalybridge Celtic v Worksop Town - Conference North Game 20

Worksop; 4-1-3-2; Fisher, Nicholson, O'Callaghan, Dempsey, Dudgeon, Wharton, Thorpe, Fisk, Khoshimov, Cropper, Norton

Subs; Jackson, Cross (GK), Goodfellow, Norville, Bambrook

With physio Tomlinson's words ringing in his ears, Fairway made four changes for Tuesday's trip to the Bower Fold - replacing Davies with O'Callaghan, the injured Wilson with Khoshimov, Goodfellow with Thorpe and Norville with Norton - keen to take advantage of the superb team spirit in the camp currently to give some of his fringe players a runout. Not that he wasn't taking the game seriously - victory, combined with a slipup for Vauxhall Motors, could see his men top the table into the New Year. They would get off to the perfect start - Wharton, against his former club, playing a fantastic pass to pick out the run of Khoshimov - his cross leaving Dene Cropper with a simple tap-in at the far post. Worksop's lead however wouldn't last long - just three minutes later Andy Hayward levelled - nodding home Sykes' centre to bring the scores back to level terms. After a brief spell of end to end action with both sides coming close, half time came as a welcome relief to Fairway - and to his players, a brief respite from the near-torrential rain. Nicholson made way for Jackson at the interval, with Dempsey moving to right back - but he would have little to do for some time as, by way of contrast, the second half began slowly. Soon after the hour mark Worksop got things moving again - Norton striking wide on 66 from Cropper's cross. Frustratingly for Fairway, Stalybridge killed off any real hopes of a victory with a second on 73 - Andy Hayward bagging his second of the afternoon with a headed effort in off the post from Calcutt's cross. Fairway immediatley threw Goodfellow (for Fisk) and Norville (for Cropper) into the fray - hoping to grab something from the game. Jackson fired wide on 77, before Norville came closer on 84 - forcing 'keeper Dootson into a smart save. Whilst it would have been harsh on Celtic, Fairway was willing Norville's injury time effort to go in - but he would be enied a point, 'keeper Dootson finally grabbing the now slippery ball at the second attempt after Khoshimov had put the striker clean through. The winning run comes to an end - and the final game of 2004 brings disapointment.

Whilst he had originally planned to offload the defender, Fairway had a change of heart on Thursday - offering Brian O'Callaghan a year's extension to his current terms. The Irishman, picked out at the start of the season as someone with 'class' had fallen out of favour, but his versatility as much as his talent brought about his reprieve - should he accept the deal, at any rate.

New Year's Day brought with it the opening of the Transfer Window for the top flight clubs in England, and all clubs in other EU Nations. Fairway was delighted that the Football League had defied UEFA over the controversial - and to his mind, needless - ruling - without the ability to bring players in mid-season, Worksop would certainly not have Jason Norville on permanent forms. It also brought with it the annual footballing awards - World Footballer of the Year, World Player of the Year and European Striker of the Year all going to Real Madrid's Ronaldo , whilst European Footballer of the Year , as well as the European Midfielder of the Year gong went to another Brazilian, Roma's Mancini . Completing the awards, European Goalkeeper of the Year also went to Spain - Valencia's Santiago Canizares , whilst Italy made it 4-2 in their 'battle' with Spain - Juve's Gianluca Zambrotta taking home the European Defender of the Year prize.

Worksop Town v Gainsborough Trinity - Conference North Game 21

Worksop; 4-1-3-2; Fisher, Nicholson, Davies*, O'Callaghan, Dudgeon, Wharton, Goodfellow, Fisk, Khoshimov, Cropper, Norville

Subs; Dempsey, Cross (GK), Jackson, Thorpe, Bambrook

Derby day - Worksop's arch rivals in town, as both sets of supporters looked a little delicate following the previous evening's excesses. O'Callaghan continued in defence, despite the late return to fitness of Kevin Davies - replacing Paul Dempsey, demoted to the bench with Physio Tomlinson still concerned that the defender looked in need of a rest. In midfield Fairway brought back Goodfellow for Thorpe, whilst up front Norton stood aside to be replaced by Jason Norville. The new year at least began with better weather than the old one ended with - chilly, but dry with a weak, watery sun setting as football kicked off for 2005. Worksop started with intent - Goodfellow clos on 4, before Cauldwell tripped Wharton inside the box three minutes later. As Azzizhon Khoshimov grabbed the ball, Fairway, remembering his double penalty miss at home to Alfreton, feared the worst. This time, the Uzbekistani winger made no mistake - sidefooting the ball under a diving Holmshaw to give the Tigers the lead. It was only down to stupidity that they lost it 10 minutes later - Steve Nicholson seeing red after a crude professional foul on Smith - allowing Steve Johnson to blast the free kick beyond Fisher. With supporters clearly enjoying the all-action, end to end game, it was a question of who would score, not if, there would be a third soon after. It came on 26 - Worksop's Cropper threading through Jason Norville , who sidestepped the 'keeper before knocking the ball home. Whilst Grant was guilty of a horrendous miss two minutes later for the visitors, Dene Cropper added Worksop's third before the break - in the right plae at the near post to bundle O'Callaghan's cross over the line. Fairway made two changes at the break - with Norville carrying a knock he made way for bambrook, whilst Miles Thorpe replaced Fisk with Fairway hoping to be able to wrap things up comfortably. Five minutes later he would be able to celebrate a fourth - Dene Cropper scoring with a fine half-volley from Bambrook's cross. Gainsborough were now in full retreat - Goodfellow could have added a fifth on the hour - but a chance break led to a better spell for Trinity. Firstly Fisher was called into action on 61 - tipping over a dipping volley from Smith, before the same player fired just over with a shot on the turn on 70. Away fans would wait just three minutes more for their side to score - too late, of course, for a comeback, but Barry Corr's goal - poking home a Neil Wood rebound - at least restored some pride. Worksop suffered a late blow - Cropper coming off worse in a collision with Alex Allen, and replaced by Jackson - but despite Simeon Bambrook hitting the bar from Goodfellow's through ball, a fifth just wouldn't come. Following defeat though Worksop answered any critics in the best way possible - with an emphatic victory to keep up the pressure on the top two.

Whilst the collision that forced Dene Cropper from the field left the striker with no ill effects come morning, fellow striker Jason Norville was hurt - his sprained wrist requiring strapping, ruling him out for a week. Physio Tomlinson also noted Kevin Davies' need for a rest.

A delighted Chairman Raymond expressed his joy at the Tigers' victory over their close rivals on Saturday evening - with the whole squad benefitting from - "Just the one mind lads, you play again in a couple of days" - the Chairman's credit card behind the bar. For Brian O'Callaghan there would be a double celebration - victory achieved on the same day he signed a year's contract extension.

The new year began badly for Bradford Park Avenue with a 3-0 defeat at Altringham - and on Sunday, Carl Shutt paid the price with his job - the ex-Leeds striker sacked after his side slipped into the drop zone just before Christmas.

Fairway's ears were burning on Monday morning - as he prepared to welcome Kettering to Babbage Way, fullback Steve Nicholson demanded to see his manager - furious that Fairway had handed him an official warning after his dismissal for a professional foul against Gainsborough, calling it 'too harsh'. Fairway was unrepentant - telling Nicholson that, as a regular, he had an important role to play in the consistency of the team - something which would be affected should the manager have to make changes due to suspsension.

Worksop; 4-1-3-2; Fisher, Dempsey, Davies*, O'Callaghan, Dudgeon, Wharton, Goodfellow, Fisk, Khoshimov, Cropper, Bambrook

Subs; Jackson, Cross (GK), Hewitt, Thorpe, Norton

With Norville injured and Nicholson banned, Fairway brought Bambrook into the attack and Paul Dempsey back into defence - Kevin Davies would have to do without his rest for now. One or two other players also looked a little jaded to Fairway, but with a lack of depth in the squad, would have to start. Youth teammer Peter Hewitt made the bench with teammate Matt Cross - Fairway hopeful that the 16-year old wouldn't be required. Fans love this time of year - a combination of games aplenty, all that post Christmas excitement as the tables begin to shape up, and the almost childish relisation that you can watch football on a Weekday afternoon and it feels like a Saturday. As a result Babbage Way was packed out - with the faithful seeing Worksop get off to an energetic start - Wharton and Fisk both having chances inside the opening 10 minutes, before things dropped off a little. At the other end Jonathan Rowan had Kettering's best chance of the first half - shooting wide after being put clean through - but the two teams went in without a goal to seperate them at the interval. Simeon Bambrook made way for Norton, whilst Kevin Davies was given a rest with Jackson going out of position at left back as Fairway rang the changes. Again the pacey Rowan was causing problems - on 53 he broke clear, only to be denied by a superb saving tackle from O'Callaghan, proving to Fairway that he had been right to reward the Irishman with an extended contrac. Two minutes later Worksop created - and missed - a golden chance to open the scoring - Dene Cropper heading Norton's cross from the right wide of the target. Worksop's final change came with 10 minutes to go - Thorpe replacing Goodfellow - in a bid to snatch a late winner. There would be a couple of chances - Kettering defending stoutly, at the expense of their attacking flair for much of the second half, but neither Jackson nor Wharton could make the most of their opportunities. Honours even.

After being held at home to a team in the relgation zone Fairway was disapointed to note his side had lost ground on the leaders - top of the pile Vauxhall Motors still locked in a duel with Nuneaton - both on 44 points, with the Motormen having a two-goal advantage over their Manor Park rivals.

Whilst it had been a quiet week at Babbage Way, Fairway had not been without things to do - squad strengthening now something of a priority - both for the present and the future. Whilst not prepared to discuss his summer Bosman targets with the media, Fairway had given scout Shaun Hird a list of names to report on.

Worksop Town v Droylsden - Conference North Game 23

Worksop; 4-1-3-2; Fisher, Dempsey, Davies*, O'Callaghan, Dudgeon, Wharton, Goodfellow, Fisk, Khoshimov, Cropper, Bambrook

Subs; Nicholson, Cross (GK), Jackson, Thorpe, Norton

No changes to the starting lineup - despite the availability of Nicholson, who only made the bench. The Goodfellow-Fisk-Khoshimov midfield trio wasn't Fairway's first choice, but in the absence of skipper Wilson, he considered it the best available to him for the time being. On a dry and - suprisingly - not too chilly, for January at least, afternoon both sides buzzed early on - Cameron and Brodie both close early on for the visitors. Despite the odd chance Worksop struggled to get into the came - Cropper's shot tipped over by Phillips on 13, but no real opportunities otherwise for the Tigers. On 29 things would get worse - James Dudgeon clattered into Banim, and ex-Chester winger Steve Brodie beat the diving Fisher with a well-placed free kick that the teenage stopper knew little about. Droylsden looked to continue their goalscoring exploits on 41 - Neil Hall hitting the bar - but fortunatley for Worksop Fisher would see Cameron hit the side netting with seconds remaining to keep the scoreline relativley tight going into the interval. A double change at the break - Fisk and Dudgeon off, with Thorpe and Nicholson replacing the underperfoming duo. If the first half had been all Droylsden, Worksop started the second half in a manner which implied that they wouldn't allow themselves to be bossed around again. After Bambrook had come close on 47, Paul Dempsey became the unlikely hero - his first goal in a Worksop shirt coming after Wharton had touched on Nicholson's 52nd minute corner. After Bambrook missed a sitter on the hour, it was left to Kevin Davies to save Worksop's skin moments later - clearing off the line from Jody Banim after Fisher had beat Cameron's shot away. The Welsh striker could have snatched it at the end - shooting over with two minutes left - but it would have been harsh in a real game of two halves - the first Droylsden's, but the second definatley Worksop.

Saturday was also FA Cup Third Round day - one of the most eagerly anticipated days in the footballing calender. Whilst there were no real shocks Arsenal and Chelsea will both face replays - away at Wolves and at home to Fulham respectivley. Spurs continued their impressive season - sixth in the Premiership and now into the FA Cup Fourth Round courtesy of a 5-0 thrashing of Chester at the Deva Stadium. The two Conference sides remaining sadly both bowed out - Stevenage going down 2-0 at home to Bolton, whilst Aldershot led Premiership WBA, only to lose 4-1 once the Baggies had recovered.

A quiet Sunday led into a focused Monday training session - with Fairway pleased to welcome Jason Norville back to training after injury. Still not 100%, he would make a late decision on the frontman ahead of kick off. Down at Bradford Park Avenue , Scot Martyn Brown took charge in his first managerial role.

Worksop Town v Droylsden - Conference North Game 24

Worksop; 4-1-3-2; Fisher, Dempsey, Davies*, O'Callaghan, Dudgeon, Wharton, Goodfellow, Fisk, Khoshimov, Cropper, Norville

Subs; Nicholson, Cross (GK), Jackson, Thorpe, Bambrook

On a bitterly cold, wet evening - the game in some doubt at one stage - Fairway recalled Norville at the expense of Bambrook as the only change to his lineup. The Trinidadian striker almost repaid Fairway's faith immediatley - heading the game's first chance over from a Davies cross on 10. It took until the 28th minute for the opening goal - with Lancaster seemingly not on song, Worksop took advantage - Dene Cropper shooting home from the edge of the box anfter a searching Norville through ball. Five minutes later the Tigers doubled their lead - Davies' cross aimed at Cropper, but instead coming off the unfortunate Andy Scott , who put the ball past 'keeper Yeomans whilst attempting to hook the ball wide. Whilst Worksop were comfortably in command, young 'keeper Fisher still needed to be at his best on 44 - reacting well to block from Jones after he had allowed a Sparrow cross through his arms. Fairway made all three of his changes at the break - Norville, Goodfellow and Davies off with Bambrook, Thorpe and Nicholson replacing them. Worksop's third - and Dene Cropper's second goal of the evening came soon after the break, on 51 - Fisk taking control in midfield, before knocking the ball back to 'keeper Fisher. His huge punt forward fell invitingly for the striker, who controlled before drilling past Yeomans. Lancaster did have the occasional breakthrough - the Worksop defence stretched for pace by Ryan Zico-Black, only for Hughes to waste his cross with a shot over the bar. With 20 minutes to go, many home fans had seen enough, and began streaming out of the Giant Axe. They probably had the best idea - Cropper should have claimed his hatrick on 80, and again two minutes from time, both times finding the stands instead of the target. Wasted chances aside, Worksop will be delighted with this one!

Wednesday afternoon saw Fairway talking facts with Physio John Tomlinson . Fact. Kevin Davies is a key part of the Worksop squad. Fact. Worksop have no other natural left backs. Fact. Davies needs to be rested.

As a result, Fairway went to Blackburn - with Alex Morgan in his sights. The Scottish left back or midfield player spent a trial period at Worksop when Fairway first took the reins - but finances prevented the permanent capture that he had hoped for. With Morgan now available - again - for loan, Fairway asked permission to take the 21-year old for a two-month spell, as cover for Davies. Almost immediatley, he recieved a positive response from Rovers - and hoped for a similar one from the player as soon as possible.

Whilst the return to fitness of skipper Mark Wilson was a definate boost, Thursday also brought two new injuries - albeit minor ones. Striking duo Blake Norton and Dene Cropper collided - both bruising facial muscles after running into oneanother. It would leave the pair out for two days each - with Fairway fortunate that the Tigers would not be involved in league action for another six days.

Sunday - and whilst Andy Preece got the boot from Worcester City , Blackburn Rovers fullback Alan Morgan signed a 2-month loan deal to come to Babbage Way. Things had changed a lot at Worksop since Morgan's brief summer spell - the Tigers now in a strong position in Conference North, far removed from Fairway's preseason ambitions of a mid-table finish.

Bradford Park Avenue v Worksop - Conference North Game 25

Worksop; 4-1-3-2; Fisher, Nicholson, Morgan, O'Callaghan, Dudgeon, Wharton, Goodfellow, Fisk, Wilson*, Cropper, Norville

Subs; Dempsey, Cross (GK), Davies, Khoshimov, Bambrook

Captain Mark Wilson's return to the team was a welcome boost - and Fairway also brought in Nicholson, replacing Dempsey, and new boy Morgan, in for Kevin Davies. Dene Cropper shrugged off his knock to start - and Fairway felt that luck was once again smiling on the Tigers. It took all of 45 seconds for Worksop to take the lead - Goodfellow winning the ball in midfield, and passing to Cropper, who threaded the ball through to strike partner Jason Norville , the Trinidadian running through to slot past 'keeper Britton. On five however Worksop were forced into an early change - Mark Wilson forced off through injury just five minuts into his comeback game - Khoshimov replacing the skipper, with Brian O'Callaghan taking the captain's armband. Worksop continued to impress - on 9 Britton denied Fisk, before Wharton fired wide from distance on 26. It took until the 40th minute for Avenue to register their first shot - Craig Smith firing wide after good work by Clayton. On the stroke of half time things got worse for the home side - good work by Fisk to keep control on the byeline allowed the loanee midfielder to put Marc Goodfellow through - and his centre left Jason Norville with the simplest of tap-ins to double Worksop's lead. Avenue looked stronger after the break - Oleksewycz - he was born in Halifax! - hit the side netting on 47, and again broke clear on the hour only to shoot wide. Try as they might, Avenue struggled to cause real panic in the Worksop defence - and Fairway took advantage of this on 76, making a further change to strengthen that back four - Davies on for Goodfellow, swapping places with Alan Morgan, while up front Bambrook replaced Cropper. The changes had the desired effect - employing a defensive player in midfield helped to stifle home creativity, and Worksop were able to keep it tight for a 2-0 victory.

Mark Wilson's injury was diagnosed by Physio Tomlinson as strained neck muscles, requiring a 5-day layoff. The skipper was clearly frustrated at being unable to play - after getting injured on Boxing Day, he had taken his time to return to training and the first team.

It had taken 25 games, but on Wednesday Redditch recorded their first win of the season - a 3-1 victory at home to fellow strugglers Runcorn FC Halton . At the other end it was tight. Too tight for Fairway's liking - his Tigers side lay third, purely for Alphabetical reasons - with Nuneaton matching Worksop statistic for statistic. Three points ahead lay Vauxhall Motors , who now look strong favourites for promotion to the Conference National.

Worksop v Altringham - Conference North Game 26

Worksop; 4-1-3-2; Fisher, Nicholson, Morgan, Dempsey, Dudgeon, Fisk, Thorpe, Goodfellow, Khoshimov, Cropper, Norville

Subs; O'Callaghan, Cross (GK), Davies, Wharton, Bambrook

Fairway made two changes for Altringham's visit to Babbage Way - replacing the injured Wilson with Khoshimov, Nathan Wharton with Miles Thorpe and Brian O'Callaghan with Paul Dempsey. Andrew Fisk moved to the holding midfield role, with Goodfellow taking the central berth and Miles Thorpe moving to his preferred role on the left of the midfield trio. Worksop started positivley - Cropper firing over from Morgan's 10th minute cross, before both Norville and Thorpe fired wide when either should have hit the target. After a hardly action packed first half, Fairway elected to leave his side unchanged at the break. The second half began slowly - Stuart Coburn in the Altringham goal having just two chances to push away in the first 20 minutes of the second half, whilst at the other end young Jason Fisher was untroubled. On 65 Fairway decided to shake things up a little - bringing on Bambrook for Goodfellow, and dropping Norville back into midfield in an attempt to make things happen. By far the closest Worksop came to scoring was in the 74th minute - when Miles Thorpe's deep cross looked to be dipping, forcing Coburn to put a hand up and palm the ball over the bar. From the resulting corner Alty eventually cleared after seeing Worksop set up camp in their penalty area. A minute later Fairway made his final two changes - Wharton and Davies on for Norville and Morgan - with Fisk moving back up into a more creative midfield role. The visitors were hardly good value for money - they managed just one shot, which went wide, all afternoon - but some strong defensive play, with a good helping of luck, was able to keep Worksop at bay, and frustrate the Tigers into settling for a point.

d_s mate this is a great story, started reading through it last night and have just finished. Always love a good long career story, especially one starting from the bottom.
