Internacional Appoint Unknown New Zealander

David Cain to lead Colorado

SC Internacional of Brazil have today appointed New Zealander David Cain to the post of Manager ending weeks of speculation. He replaces the outgoing Abel Braga, the man responsible for bringing the Copa Libertadores and FIFA World Club Championship trophies in 2006 to Porto Alegre. Eyebrows have certainly been raised by the appointment, and it is likely to be a rough first few weeks in charge for the New Zealand rookie.

Looking around the Internacional grounds, I feel like a fish out of water, the club is like nothing I have ever seen. Everything about the club had impressed me. The magnificent Beira-Rio stadium, with a capacity of over 56000, the glorious training ground, and the State of the Art Youth facilities. The mighty club from Porto Alegre even owned a brilliant Gymnasium capable of holding 18,000 people. Running this ship would not be easy, and the young manager, had no idea what he was in for.

I arrived at the traing ground at 10.00am sharp and was greeted by an enormous squad of 117. Narrowing this lot down would not be easy, especially with the new season just weeks away.

After a brief introductory session with my bemused looking squad, in which they were informed of my tactics, hopes and expectations for the year, I took the time to look over the squad. We would be playing an attack minded 4-4-2 and this blend of experianced old heads, with a dash of youthful exuberance would no doubt stand us in good stead.

My Assistant, Leomir de Souza informed me a number of the squad were here on loans which were due to finish in the next few days, whilst another dozen contracts were due to expire shortly also.

Judgement Day

After training a number of players were held behind. Manager David Cain announced that with such a sizable squad, a few players would have to be let go. Cain inherited a few players who were currently on loan to the club. Colombian midfielder Fabian Vargas, centre-back Fabiano Eller of Trabzonspur, promising center-back Miniero, Young Striker Caio, and a young centre-back called Gum were all informed that the club would be seeking to retain their services on loan for the next six months.

Peruvian winger Martin Hidalgo, and young centre back Eric, were told they would be of no use to Cain, and were sent packing a few days early.

The news was tough, but 117 in a squad just seemed too many, more cuts would come soon as well, and the off-contract players were told they had a couple of days to impress Cain or to find another club.

Judgement Day.... Again

Wilson Released

Fans of Internacional were today left shocked as manager David Cain released 30 year old consistent centre-back Wilson. He had made 83 appearances for the club, scoring 6 goals. In a statement to the fans, David Cain remarked "In a squad of this size there's no room for passengers, we thank Wilson for his services to the club and wish him the best for the future".

This move apparently highlights Cain's desire to build the team around youth, with talents such as Edinho and Sidnei poised to benefit from this departure.

Cain also announced the imminent departures of Cicero, Martin, Pierre, and Teco. All of whom were youngsters who never appeared in the famous red strip.

New contracts have been offered to veterans Wellington Monteiro, Fabinho, Clemer, and Cidimar, who's currently on loan at Portuguesa.

Youngsters Fabinho, Liniker, and Raul were all handed offers to mull over.

Internacional In's and Out's

In a up and down week for the club, we have secured the futures of seven players, First teamers Indio, Monteiro, Fabinho and veteran 'keeper Clemer have all inked extended deals, as have youth team talents, Liniker, Raul, Cidimar, and Fabinho jr.

The club have also secured Gum's signature for the next 6 months on loan, but were devestated to miss out on Fabiano Eller, Caio, Miniero, and crucially, Colombian star, Fabian Vargas.

Vargas was expected to play a key role for Cain who must now search for a right sided midfielder as the squad contains only 3 in the 110 contracted players.

They club's academy has also announced academy contracts for 7 promising locals. Robson, Santos, Alberto, Martins, Celso, and Luciano. However it is local age group star Thiago who David Cain is most excited by, claiming "you cant teach the skills this lad has, the world is his oyster"

Rio Branco 0 - 3 Internacional

On a fine January day, David Cain's Internacional defeated Rio Branco(SP) 3-0 in a friendly. Goalkeeper Clemer earned Man of the Match performance which made a mockery of his 38 year old age. Goals were scored by cult figure, Adriano Gabiru, Colombian striker Wason Rentaria, and Iarley. Cain admitted after the game, "we had our moments today, but obviously we were a tad rusty".

The club were without young left-back Ramon, who was away with the Brazil U20's and could be one with a huge future.

A Busy day in Brazil...

Portuguesa 1 - 2 Internacional

Internacional overturned a 1-0 halftime deficit to walk away with a scratchy 2-1 victory in Sao Paulo today. Goals from Maycon and Iarley secured the victory in Inter's last preseason hit out before the real thing. A perplexed David Cain declined to comment on the performance, but judging by the yelling in the dressing room, he didn't have to.

Cain Releases six

David Cain has today released six goalkeepers from his enormous squad. It is believed this is only the start of a dramatic downsizing of the squad. Only Luiz Muller commanded a fee, being sold for €100,000 to mexicans Pachuca. Also released were Nicolas, Diego Rocha, Anderson, and suprisingly recent additions Santos and Luciano.

Corinthians for the Title?

Odds for the Brazilian National First Division were released today. Corinthians were named favourites at odds of 2-1, with Internacional at 6-1, and Palmieres paying 16-1. This could all change however, with the championship not due to kickoff until May.

A new Beginning?

Internacional were delighted to announce a link with Gimnasia(J) of Argentina. The partnership will see some of Inter's finest youngsters spend time in Argentina sharpening their skills, while also ensuring Argentina's finest talent makes it's way to Internacional.

On a sour note, Cain has continued his overhaul of the Internacional squad, with fullbacks Edinho, Daniel Henz, Claudinei, and Robson the latest to be set free. Cain said the cull will continue over the next few weeks until the squad has reached an acceptable size

Internacional have been drawn to face America(MEX) in the SA Recopa Final in August. The first leg will be played in Mexico, and the pundits believe it could be quite a test fot the boys from Brazil

In other news, the latest released players have been announced, this time it was 9 centerbacks who were let go. There were no big names released, with no first team appearances between the 9. When asked to justify his actions, Cain said "I dont know of any football team in the world which needs 30 odd centrebacks. 12's enough for us.

Internacional 5-0 Gaucho

David Cain's side strolled to a brilliant 5-0 victory in the opening match of the Gaucho State Championship. 10800 fans flocked to Beira-Rio to see a rampant Inter side run Gaucho off the park. Centre Forward Diego was the star scoring a goal and creating another, whilst Adriano Gabiru(2), Marcio Mossoro, and Fabiano both got on the scoresheet for Colorado. Diego has been labelled the next Jairzinho and certainly showed us why today. Mossoro and Fabinho were injured which soured the win but nonetheless Inter were delighted with 3 easy points. Wason Rentaria managed 3 assists for Inter before seeing Red in the 58th minute

Earlier it had been revealed the 4 more players had been released and the squad size was now a more managable size of 91 players.

Rampant Inter crush local minnows

Internacional strolled to a leisurely 9-0 victory today over a weak Guarany de Bage side. Whilst GdB did all they could, they looked powerless to resist the brilliant Inter side.

Iarley and Luiz Adriano scored hat-tricks for Inter, whilst other scorers were Adriano Gabiru, Chiquinho, and an unfortunate own goal. However, there was no denying the architect of the massacre was 24 year old Left Winger Alex, who conjured up an amazing 5 assists.

Afterwards, locals were heard stating that they believed the 19 year old Luiz Adriano to be as good as former Selecao star Serginho Chulapa, a comment Cain would certainly agree with.

Whilst Inter were off to a flyer, the release of half a dozen more players was announced, as was the falling through of a deal to send 5th choice left wing Juca to Mainz in Germany, for €100,000, which it transpired, they couldnt afford.

Young Striker Abu was also called up for the Nigerian national side, his future at Inter however, is perhaps not so bright, with Cain considering his future at Colorado

Internacional 2-0 Brasil de Pelotas

A lacklustre Internacional was left with a meagre 2-nil scoreline today at Beira-Rio. Fans lambasted the team for a lazy performance, although Cain returned fire, stating the miserly attendence of 11,000 fans hardly helped inspire the side. Man of the Match honours went to Adriano Gabiru, the 9 times capped Attacking Midfielder, whilst the goalswent to Colombian striker Wason Rentaria, and Right-Back Elder Granja.

Cain also announced 12 strikers had been released by the club leaving them with 11. He holds high hopes for 17 year old Alexandre Pato, who reminds him of a young Jairzinho. Cain believes the youngster could challenge for a place come mid season.

Cain also stated he was now happy with the squad of 72, and no further cuts were needed. He also indicated he will probably refrain from any transfer activity, preferring to allow his transfer funds of €275,000 to collect interest till midseason.

Rampage Continues as minnows Destroyed

Gloria 0-8 Internacional

A rampant Internacional taught local minnows Gloria a lesson on their own turf today, banging in 8 of the best. Colombian striker Wason Rentaria celebrated his recent contract extension with 3 goals and 2 assists to earn the Man of the Match award. Surely, this sort of form must have him knocking on the door for a Colombia call-up. Elder Granja also chipped in with a pair of goals including a long-range rocket which could be an early contender for goal of the year. Michel, Iarley, and Adriano Gabiru wrapped up the scoring on a cold Brazilian day.

Transfer Window Closes

Internacional closed out the transfer window with no additions. Whilst fans may have been miffed by this, Cain believes the future of the club is already there, extending the contracts of youth team stars Alexandre Pato, and Dariano. However, despite the lack of additions Inter still ended the month with a loss of €450,000. There remains €4,000,000 in the bank but Cain will have to keep an eye on the bottom lin, if future additions are to be made.

In other news 18 year old Winger Geovanni won a suprising call up to the Spanish U21 side. Whilst Cain was happy for the young starlet, he was also suprised as he didn't realise Geovanni had a drop of Spanish blood in him.

Different day, Same result

Internacional 4-0 Sao Jose(RS)

15000 watched an efficient Internacional side canter through their latest Gaucho State Championship match versus an out of their depth Sao Jose(RS) side. The 4-0 scoreline was a fair reflection of a match which was only ever going to have one winner. The exceptional Inter defense, marshalled by Edinho, a man Cain hails as a future Brazilian International did not allow Sao Jose a single shot, maing a quiet day in goal for Cleber. Luiz Adriano, Michel, Diego, and Man of the Match Iarley all tallied for Inter, leavingthem to op Group B with the maximum 15 points from their first 5 games. Groups A and C are led by Gremio and Fortaleza respectively who also have secured maxim points, and it appears these 3 will fight it out for the trophy come the elimination rounds.

Gaucho 0-9 Internacional

Internacional's brutal form continued in today's match. Fernandao led the way with four strikes, all in the final quarter of the match, whilst Iarley helped himself to a hat-trick as well. The scoring was rounded out by winger Michel, and centre-back Wellington Monteiro, who rose highest to open the scoring from a corner.

Manager David Cain was conspicious by his absence from today's match. Club officials stated he had left the club for a week on a scouting mission to the Carribbean, leaving his able deputy Leomir de Souza to handle proceedings over the upcoming week.

Internacional streaked away to an easy 8-0 win over minnows Gloria today. Cain took the oppurtunity to see a few fringe players in action and wasn't disappointed. If anything the stellar performances only complicated matters. Perhaps the most exciting aspect of the game was the fact all eight goals were scored by different players. Rentaria, Michel, Diego, Cleiton Xavier, Ceara, Wellington Monteiro, Rodrigo Paulista, and Luiz Adriano did the honours ensuring the meagre crowd of 11006 got their money's worth today. Michel was given the Man of the Match award for his goal and 3 assists. Vila Aurora 0-6 Internacional

Brazilian Cup, First Round, First Leg

On a fine day, Internacional faced their first important game of the year. The Brazilian Cup opener vs Vila Aurora. Cain put forward his strongest possible line-up for this game knowing a big win would mean an opputrunity to blood some youngsters in the return leg.

After the first few minutes feeling each other out, in was Internacional who struck first, with Alex finding the net with a dipping, curling free-kick from just outside the box. Vila were rattled and the floodgates beagan to open. Iarley burst past three defenders on 20 minutes before drawing the goalie and laying the ball off to Fernandao to tap in. It looked like being a 2 nil lead at half time until Michel left the hapless Vila Aurora wide men in his wake and delivered a killer ball for Fernandao to head in on the whistle.

The second half began as the first had ended. Iarley kicked off to Fernandao who raced through anyone in his way before putting away his third, 9 seconds into the second half. 8 minutes later it was Alex wreaking havoc down the other flank delivering a pinpoint cross for Fernandao to grab his fourth at the near post. In the 67th minute it was Alex who played provider again, this time finding Michel alone at the far post, Michel lashing the ball past a down-trodden 'keeper to round out the scoring.

In other club news, it was announced Gum would be returned to his club, as he was not looking like developing as we had hoped. Loan offers were also streaming in for young starlet Luiz Adriano, and the youngster looks like spending time at a big club sooner rather than later.

Internacional 4-1 Cerro Porteno

Copa Libertadores Group G

Internacional (Renan - Granja, Chiquinho, Monteiro, Edinho - Michel, Alex, Xavier, Fernandao - Rentaria, Iarley)

Internacional went into this game missing a couple of first team regulars anticipating the toughest match of the year. What they got was a leisurely stroll in the park for 90 minutes.

On 13 minutes Iarley waltzed around three men on the edge of the box before firing the ball into the auld onion bag. You could have been mistaken for thinking it was a goal of the season contender, at least until Monteiro went one better firing home from 35 yards when the ball came free from a corner. Elder Granja threatened to add a third on 30 miutes only to be denied by the crossbar. A threatening run and cross by Michel down the flank found the head of a defender only for the ball to fall free to Granja who converted from the edge of the box.

The second half was played out knowing the result was safe. Intensity levels dropped with only Iarley getting on the scoresheet, this time benefitting from an Alex cross to the near post in the 67th minute. Cerro Porteno grabbed a late consolation but the result was never in doubt. Man of the Match honours went to Iarley for his double, whilst in the other Group G match, Gimnasia(LP) won 2-1 at Colo Colo.

Internacional 4-1 Novo Hamburgo

Gaucho State Champs Group Stage 2

Another easy victory for Internacional in the Gaucho State Champs today, this time defeating Novo Hamburgo. Iarley and Michel grabbed two goals apiece in front of this seasons biggest crowd of 27031. Iarley again grabbed Man of the Match honours for the home side.

7 March 2007

Internacional 3-0 Vila Aurora

Brazilian Cup 1st Round Leg 2

Another easy victory for the boys today. Up 6-0 from the first leg it was never going to be a difficult match, with Cain taking the chance to look at a few fringe players in front of a meagre crowd of around 7500. Iarley, Diego, and Edinho all got on the scoresheet with Diego pushing forward his credentials with a Man of the Match performance in this encounter. Therefore Inter progress to Round Two 9-0 on aggregate.

Also, Cain has decided to loan out young scoring sensation Luiz Adriano to Cruziero for the foreseeable future. The youngster has grabbed 5 goals in 6 appearances this season, mostly off the bench. Luiz can be recalled at any stage, and it would be no suprise if he's back before long

Caxias 0-5 Internacional

Gaucho State Champs Second Round

With another walkover in prospect, Cain decided it was best to let his able lieutenant, Leomir de Souza handle this one. The result was a foregone conclusion Cain thought, and he wasn't left to rue his decision. 5 goals were scored in all, 4 of which came in the first twenty minutes, with the prolific Iarley again helping himself to a brace. Alex, Wellington Monteiro, and impressive B team prospect Alvaro grabbed the remaining goals. Not surprisingly, it was again Iarley who picked up the Man of the Match cheque from the proud sponsors.

In other news young prospect Luiz Adriano who just days ago had been loaned to Cruziero, found himself subject of a transfer enquiry from Flamengo. I could barely stop myself from laughing down the phone at them. What could be better than selling my finest prospect to a national rival?

Gimnasia(LP) 1-4 Internacional

Copa Libertadores Group G

Internacional ( Clemer - Granja,Chiquinho,Edinho, Monteiro - Michel, Alex, Alvaro, Mossoro - Fernandao, Iarley)

Again I thought I had the first real test of the season on our hands, and again I was left dissapointed ( or happy?). We travelled to Argentina to take on Gimnasia(LP, the bitter rivals of our feeder club Gimnasia(J). We went into this one hoping for a draw and anticipating tough competition.

The scoring got underway in debatable fashion with Iarley latching onto a through ball from winger Michel, and depositing the ball in the top corner. To the naked eye it seemed he was a good two feet offside but the goal stood and Inter were up 1-0 after 16 minutes. The rest of the half was a battle with Gimnasia tackling hard, and their keeper performing heroics in goal. We lost Alex and Monteiro to injuries in the first half, and there were a few aching limbs by the halftime break.

To counter the tough tackling the boys were told to move the ball round faster and run their opponents ragged. Cain felt one more goal would kill off the opposition and from there victory would be a formality. The boys heeded the instructions and the second half proved to be the Michel show. In the 51st minute a neat cross found Fernandao who's deflected shot made its way into the net. He then put Fernandao away 10 minutes later with a precise through ball which left the defence at a standstill. Alex's replacement was unlucky soon after hitting the bar twice in 5 minutes with rasping drives from distance.

Gimnasia responded by showing their prowess from set pieces with striker Herrera latching onto a freekick, his header leaving 'keeper Clemer stranded. Any hopes of a fightback were demolished after 80 minutes when Fernandao this time turned provider for Michel, his through ball to Michel leaving the Winger to finish expertly from an acute angle.

Man of the Match honours went to Fernandao, although I was more impressed with Michel's effort of 1 goal and 3 assists.

Colo Colo 0-2 Internacional

Copa Libertadores Group G

Internacional (Renan - Granja,Chiquinho,Edigle,Edinho - Xavier,Michel,Alvaro,Mossoro - Iarley,Fernandao)

It had been a week since our last match, a week seeming like an eternity down here. Most weeks we have two matches so itwas pleasant to relax for a couple of days before our big clash vs Colo Colo. However, a lot can happen in a week, and my side was depleted by a virus doing the rounds in the camp. 8 players were unavailable for this match, most crucial being Alex.

Colo Colo weren't a team we would be taking lightly. They currently had wonderkid Alexis Sanchez on their books, on loan from Udinese, and we knew our game would have to be on point today.

The first half however failed to live up to it's billing with no real chances for either side. Both teams were known for their fluid, attacking football, and with both teams locked on 6pts at the top of the group, it seemed maintaining flawless records was the gameplan today.

However, Inter came out looking a different side in the second half, and it was in the 47th minute that Cleiton Xavier broke free of his marker and slid a ball through the defence for Iarley to powerfully finish. It seemed Colo Colo were spurned into action by this, and they soon had a couple of half chances falling thrier way, but the Inter defense, superbly marshalled by Man of the Match Edigle held firm to hold them out. From there Colo Colo turned to violence, and it was no suprised when Chiquinho left on a stretcher, having been repeatly bludgeoned by the tough Colo Colo midfield. Rubens Cardoso replaced hm, and it was the veteran who rose highest to a Cleiton Xavier corner to seal a 2-0 victory in the 87th minute.

Internacional 2-0 Juventude

Gaucho State Champs Stage 2

It was time to face our biggest challenge in the Gaucho State Champs. We were up against fellow first division side Juventude. They certainly looked good on paper, boasting players such as young Striker Felipe, who had been touted as the new Jardel, and a pair of Peruvian international fullbacks, Ernest Arakaki, and Miguel Villalta, both picked up in pre-season.

A big crowd of 23000 or so turned out to see the clash for Pool B supremacy. With both sides sitting on 6 points the winner would establish a firm grip on the Group. The match proved to be a bit dull, with little action until the 34th minute when a Cleiton Xavier cross found a blatantly offside Michel who headed the ball over the opposition goalie. The goal would stand however, could it be match-fixing? 5 minutes later Marcio Mossoro hammered an unstoppable free kick from 25 yards out to give Inter a 2-0 buffer. And in the 48th minute Juventude's Patrick kicked Mossoro, and was shown red. This closed the game out and a dull game ambled on to it's conclusion, with no other incidents.

We took this one out 3-0 with Iarley grabbing two more goals and another man of the match award. He now had a stunning 24 goals to his name this season, and were barely in April. Fernandao grabbed the other goal, but the area I was happiest with was the defense, which not only kept a clean sheet, but didn't even allow the opponents to take a single shot.

Internacional 3-0 Colo Colo

Copa Libertadores Group G

(Renan - Granja, Cardoso, Edigle, Edinho - Michel, Alex, Pinga, Gabiru (Mossoro '45) - Iarley, Fernandao (Diego '45)

With ourselves having won our first three Copa Libertadores ties, we saw this as a chance to seal qualification early. It was a fairly even start to the game until the 20th minute, when young starlet Alexis Sanchez picked up his second yellow of the match. Within 10 minutes Inter made the most of the extra man, Granja slamming a free kick into the wall only for Alex to drill home the rebound from 25 yards. Colo Colo scrambled well and kept the scoreto 1-0 at halftime. Shortly after the break Colo Colo's Rojas brought down Iarley who was free on goal and Colo Colo were down to 9. It only took a minute for Inter to make the most of the advantege with Mossoro rifling home a loose ball from Alex's corner. Gutierrez showed his displeasure by kicking Edigle and Colo Colo would see out the game with just 8 men. They did well to only concede one more goal, Diego finding Iarley with a peach of a ball, Iarley grabbing his 25th of the year. Man of the Match went to Alex and 15000 fans went home very happy.

Despite having an extra man for 55 minutes we couldnt find a winner in this one. We had 21 shots to our opponents 4, but we had to be content with a 3-0 aggragate victory. True, a number of stars were rested, but the shabby 8000 fans expected more. Alex grabbed Man of the Match honours again, surely a big money move is on the horizon?

Juventude 0-3 Internacional

Gaucho State Group A

With a win here we would secure a spot in the final a week early. Juventude were a handy side with Peruvian Internacionals amongst them and they made us fight for the points. Through the fine play of Alex, Fernandao glanced in across after 12 minutes. The match was dominated by the refaree and by the 20 minutes mark, 5 cautions had been issued. We came out for the second half desparete to grab a winner and Rentaria did just that, nodding home a fine Michel cross after fine buildup paly from Elder Granja. The game meandered on after that with Rentaria intercepting a backpass and releasing the open Fernandao, who tapped in for his double. Goiano of Juventude was then ejected after a needless kick on Fernandao

With qualification assured in both the Copa Libetadores and the Gaucho state champs, Cain decided to have a break, leaving Leomir de Souza in charge for the next week. A run down of events:

18 April 2007

Internacional 1-0 Gimnasia LP

16000 saw a rotated Internacional side win 1-0. Pinga grabbed the solitary strike in the 18th minute, whilst Elder Granja got the Man of the Match cheque.

22 April 2007

Novo Hamburgo 0-6 Internacional

Novo Hamburgo were always going to be up against it and 3 reds meant there was only going to be one winner. Iarlet put on a virtuoso performance grabbing a hattrick, whilst Diego, Mossoro, and Michel also tallied. Mossoro was imprssive grabbing 3 assists as well. Novo failed to register a shot, whilst the trigger happy Inter took a huge 29.

**********

25 April 2007

Cerro Porteno 0-6 Internacional

A second straight 6-0 win for Inter. An early red wrote this one off for Cerro. They too failed to take a shot, to my 21. Fernandao did the job today grabbing 3, with Gabiru, Michel and Ceara also scoring. The ral action was in the Gimnasia vs Colo Colo game with the winner qualifying for round 2. Gimnasia coming away handsome 3-0 winners

Internacional....18pts(+18)

Gimnasia LP......7pts(0)

Colo Colo........4pts(-1)

Cerro Porteno....4pts(-17)

Wellington Monteiro was sold to Santos for 1.3m today. The 28yo was a useful backup but with the depth we have i didnt think twice. Into the first team comes 23yo Pereira a club junior, yet to appear for the seniors.

Gremio vs Interancional

Gaucho State Final Leg 1

(Renan - Granja, Chiquinho, Edinho, Indio - Michel, Alex, Perdigao, Gabiru - Fernandao, Iarley)

Wow! If this wasn't a great game I dont know what is

9th - Gremio get off to a flier with Peruvian International Junior Ross sliding a fantastic ball through for Leo Lima to tap home beyond Renan. Gremio 1 Inter 0

20th - Gremio's brilliant DM Lucas, shown yellow, will be banned for final.

22nd - A howitzer from Michel was somehow kept out by Marcelo Grohe, unfortunately for him, Iarley was the to tap in. Gremio 1 Inter 1

45th - Inter look a little better, but the game belongs to the keepers.

53rd - A loose challenge from Lucas sees Gremio reduced to 10 men

56th - Junior Ross sees yellow, banned for final. Edigle takes the freekick from his own half and finds Alex down the wing. Alex delivers a killer thru ball, and Iarley taps in. Gremio 1 Inter 2

63rd - Its now 11 vs 9 as Wellington gets a second yellow card for Gremio.

69th - The 9 men fight back, Herrera finding Ross for the equaliser, hes gone for the final, but hes still here now. Gremio 2 Inter 2

72nd - Fernandao denied a clear penalty, Im outraged!!!

73rd - Fabio Luciano grabs a yellow and misses the final

89th - Chiquinho played through Alex who was axed in the box, The referee sees it!!! Elder Granja steps up... GOAL!!! no chance for Grohe. Gremio 2 Inter 3

93rd - Leo Lima kicks the goalscorer Granja. Another Red, 8 men for Gremio, and worryingly, 4 key players will miss the final.

To say im happy is an understatement, Looks like silverware to Beira-Rio.

Young Right Back Ramon sent to Fortaleza on loan for the year. With Granja holding down Right Back we felt it beneficial to send the Brazil U21 fullback away for some much needed game time.

We also make a tidy 1.5m last month, thanks to some success and a rather useful sale.

Gimnasia(LP) 2-4 Internacional

Copa Libertadores Round 2 Leg 1

This was a match which held no fear for Inter. Twice this season we had beaten Gimnasia, and I was sure a 3rd win would be on the way. My only concern was fatigue, this being our 4th consecutibve trip away.

The game lived up to my expectations with us looking the better side all through the match. It was already 2-1 when Gimnasia lost a man on halftime to a red card. We got 2 more before they scrambled in a late consolation. The scorers were Granja, man of the match Fernandao, Marcio Mossoro and Iarley.

Internacional - Gremio

Gaucho State Champs Final Leg 2

I sent out my strongest available XI for this one despite us being halfway to victory. Gremio would be without the suspended Lucas, Fabio Luciano, Wellington, Junior Ross, and Leo Lima. Pedro Junior and German Herrera were also gone with injuries.

Internacional (Renan - Granja, Chiquinho, Edinho, Indio - Michel, Alex, Perdigao, Gabiru - Iarley, Fernandao)

Cain warned his side of complacency going into battle in front of 56210 ravenous Inter fans, who sniffed silverware. The sides traded blows early on and it was a swift counter attacking movement which saw Iarley draw Marcelo Grohe, then play through Fernandao for the opener. We were up 4-2 and victory looked closer than ever. Howevr, Hugo silenced the fans with a 36th minute equaliser and the game was locked again. Not for long as ace wingman Alex found Fernandao on the near post from his corner, the big man more than happy to restore our lead. As had been the case so often discipline finished the job for us. Gremio lost Pereira and the victory was assured. Alex played a hand in two more goals; firstly for Fernandao to complete his hattrich, and then for Michel to head in a deserved goal. Fernandao Genro did score the goal of the game for Gremio in the 89th minute but at 7-4 aggregate, this one was over. Fernandao scooped the honours, but the game was won thanks to Gremio's ill-discipline, 1 red and 8 yellow cards.

The 38th title was in the cabinet for Internacional and calls were recieved by illustrios ex stars Dunga, now the national coach, and Daniel Carvalho, a man Cain would later look to entice home. The 200k prize money would help with that Cain thought, but not much.

Alex took the honour for best player averaging a herculean 8.89 and topping the assists chart with 13. Iarley topscored with an impressive 22 goals to his name.

Internacional today announced the future sale of DM Alvaro to Mexicans Morelia. The promising midfielder was a wee way down the cue here and 1,300,000 plus a 30% sell on fee seemed a great deal for a B-teamer. He will leave the club on July 20th.

Internacional 3-0 Gimnasia LP

Copa Libertadores Round 2 Leg 2

1500 fans turned out for this one. Man of the match Fernandao struck twice whilst Iarley also scored. A fine 7-2 aggregate victory for Inter. Boca Juniors would prove far sterner opponents in the quarters.

Boca Juniors - Internacional

Copa Libertadores Quarterfinal 1st Leg

The quarterfinal saw us travel to Argentina to take on legendary Argentineans Boca Juniors. Boca could boast stars such as Rodrigo Palacio, Fernando Gago, Martin Palermo, Daniel Diaz, Neri Cardozo and Hugo Ibarra.

Within 10 minutes we were down 2-nil. Palacio playing through Palermo who showed he still had it at 32,and Daniel Diaz scoring a masterful freekick past Renan. We seemed helpless and their paraguayan kepper Aldo Bobadill was having a blinder. 2-0 at halftime.

By the 78th minute we looked a far better side and I was delighted to see Diaz concede a penalty for Granja to score for us, it was now 2-1 but we had the crucial away goal. It seemed we would have a fair chance in the return. However a miracle happend, a long raking free kick from Chiquinho found Gabiru and the veteran was all to happy to equalise. Somehow we left argentina on level terms.

Internacional 0-0 Fluminense

Copa de Brasil Round 3 Leg 1

12000 fans turned out for a dismally boring match at Beira-Rio today. 38 year old Clemer was tidy in goal keeping a clean sheet but had little to save anyway. Inter now face a tough ask in the away leg to keep their hopes alive.

Reserve striker Cidimar was loaned to Figuerense for the rest of the year as I look to assess his future. However wth all our young striking prospects, this may be the beginning of the end for the 22 year old.

Renan and reserves Left Back Felipe made the Brazil U23 team for the Gold Cup, both are uncapped at U23 level, though Renan has 60+ caps for the U21 side.

Internacional v Boca Juniors

Copa Libertadores Quarters Leg 2

(Clemer - Granja, Chiquinho, Edinho, Edigle - Michel, Alex, Mossoro, Gabiru - Rentaria, Fernandao)

We got off to a shocker today. Clemer muffed an early clearance, finding a wide open Palermo who was happy to lob home from 40 yards into an empty net. By the half hour mark our fate was sealed. Elder Granja was sent off meaning we would need to find a goal with 10 men verses this brilliant Boca side. Our woes were further compounded a minute later when Michel was injured leaving Xavier to replace him.

Boca seemed to be coasting when the pacy Rentaria found a way through the defense and found Fernandao, who expertly rounded the keeper. So halftime came along and despite being a man down, we now lead on away goals.

The plan was to keep them out and the task became easier when dangerman Neri Cardozo was sent off in the 53rd. We defended stoutly and the veteran Clemer wound back the years with a couple of brilliant late saves to see us through. We were now in the Semi's, and 120,000 pounds richer as well.

Fluminense 0-1 Internacional

Copa de Brasil 3rd Round Leg 2

1 goal was enough in a tough battle today. A sublime Alex cross found Fernandao, who forced a magnificent save from Henrique. He couldn't however keep out Rentaria's rebound and the solitary goal was enough to see us through.

A Paranaense 1-3 International

Copa de Brasil Quarters Leg 1

Rentaria, Gabiru, and Fernandao got the goals for us today. The match was locked at one a piece until Paranaense defender David got himself sent off. Paranaense looked good but Man of the Match Edinho blunted everything they had to offer.

Sao Caetano 2-0 Internacional

First Division

With the way thing had been goping this year we held little regard to Sao Caetano. Sure they did boast 4 times capped Silvio Luiz and a few other useful players, but this match looked a nice one to rest some first teamers. This was to our peril however, as we went down 2-0. Cain had gone 36 games but today tasted his first loss. Perhaps division 1 would be his biggest challenge?

Corinthians 0-2 Internacional

Copa Libertadores Semifinals

Well, it appeared the rest paid off. Corinthians had a heavy scheduele going into this game and had many tired legs on the pitch. We dominated this game with Marcio Mossoro grabbing both goals for us. Both were provided by Ceara, who was standing in for Elder Granja at Right Back. Corinthians star midfielder Magrao was red carded in the second half, meaning out chances of making the final looked even brighter.

Parana 0-2 Internacional

First Division

With our progress in the Libertadores and the Brazilian Cup, we again rested some tired first teamers for this one. I was absolutely delighted to come away victorious 2-0. Fernandao and youngster Porcellis were on target for us with Mossoro grabbing another award for us.

Internacional 0-0 Corinthians

Copa Libertadores Semifinal Leg 2

With 2 away goals in the bag, defence was all we had on our mind. Rentaria and Granja were absent for this one but our defense stood firm and we were ecstatic to make the final, despite the jeers of 31000 fans who would have hoped for a more free flowing match. Cruz Azul got past Goias in the other semi and we would await them in the final. A 160,000 cheque was banked as prizemoney for making it to the final.
