Ishu, what do you make of this laptop:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/DV6-3119SA-Notebook-2-53Ghz-Windows-Premium/dp/B004BEWZDG/ref=sr_1_6?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1312628451&sr=1-6

Hewlett Packard, Intel Core i5 2.53 GHz, 4GB RAM, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 2202 MB.

Sounds quite good to me but then I'm not an expert like you!

How many cores does i5 have?

How many leagues would I be able to run on FM, would you think?

And is the graphics card good?

Thanks in advance. :)

CPU and GPU are both outdated.

Cheers, I'll take a look.

I have the samsung laptop, mate. I got it a couple of weeks ago and other than the Nvidia 520M, i can't fault it. The aforementioned GPU is an entry level one, so don't go expecting great things from it. It runs games like minecraft and the 3D part of FM fine and i can run Scotland, England, Spain, Italy, Germany, France, Brazil, Mexico, with large database. i could probably run more, but i don't like using an insane amount of leagues.

This one is available for 695 in India. Laptops in India are ALWAYS more expensive than similar ones in EU. You will probably get coupons too.

Look for a similar HP with a 1920x1080 screen. HPs have better build quality, and a faster graphic card. And I hate Acer.

65 leagues.

I'm back again Ishu. I finally have a little bit of money to spend (min. £500, max. £600) in order to replace my old laptop, which is more or less on its last legs. I'm really struggling on what I should buy though. I don't even know if it would be best to buy a laptop or a desktop!

I was thinking of getting a desktop but the main issue is that I have no monitor or any of the other bits and pieces you need. The bonus of a laptop is that you don't have to worry about that, of course. Basically, I want the best spec I can get for my money and if that's a desktop, I'll get a desktop, and vice-versa.

What I really want is a machine for intensive use. I'm on my machine for huge amounts of time. I wouldn't call myself a gamer particularly but I do play some games and therefore need something decent to cope with that. The main thing I do with my computer is use the Internet a great deal and play games like FM and Minecraft. Therefore, I want the best processor and RAM I can afford for Football Manager purposes. Then, I also want a decent graphics card which will cope with Minecraft with the top settings. So not extreme gaming by a long distance but some ability to cope with the quite basic level graphics in Minecraft and that sort of thing.

I found this website - http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/ - which seems to allow you to customise desktops and laptops. They build it for you, which is perfect for me, because I really don't have the confidence to build myself. What do you guys think of this site?

I'm pretty sure I want an Intel i5 or i7, whatever I can get. I'd also like 4GB RAM minimum. The main thing is that I have no idea at all what constitutes a good graphics card. I don't need something amazing, just enough to play FM with high 3D settings if I want, and the same with Minecraft on high settings. Any advice guys? I'd really appreciated it as I'm struggling to work out what would be best for me.

Crouchy i got my system from pcspeacialist about a year ago now and been very happy, i dare say my custom built machine would of been 400-500 hundred pound more expensive if i'd of got say a brand name acer hp etc

Thanks Wally. That fills me with a bit of confidence to buy from them. It does seem like a good way of doing it.

Yeah well i can defiantly recommend them, i was slightly apprehensive at start as i thought how can it be so cheap but yeah very happy, and been able to build your own lap top or desktop is great

I've heard good thing about that site on this forum. Wally seems to be happy too.

But they don't offer many options tbh. They go from a nameless powersupply to a high end one. No middle end option.

Only ASUS motherboards etc.

I would recommend you to watch some howto build videos on youtube.

If you still think that you can't build yourself and can't get a friend or pro to build it for you, get the i5 2400, 4GB, H61 Mobo, HD 6670.

Hi Ishu, it seems you are the man to talk to.. please can you offer any advice on my earlier post?

Thanks

Rob

Hi all, i have looked through this forum but please help if you can,

I have played FM for as long as i can remember and am looking to buy a new laptop. The main purpose of said laptop will be to play football manager but also watch tv, i.e bbc iplayer and 4OD, store music and files, chat, webcam etc. I normally run 3-5 countries max and watch highlights, although i am old school so mainly just text, rather than the whole graphic experience.

My only problem is the graphics card, whats good for highlights etc bit also watching tv/films? Should i look for dedicated cards or is built in graphics ok? I have a budget of £500 max if that helps.

From what i gather a processor of 2ghz or more, 4gb of ram, 500gb of memory and a decent graphics card is all that i need to run this fine game quickly.

At the moment i play it from a basic Acer which is far below the spec but still somehow plays the game!

2nd one is much better than the first.

Infact I just linked it 6 posts above (4GB/500GB version). :D

I would get the 4GB version for 50 pounds cheaper. You won't need the extra 2GB RAM. Also it would be cheaper to upgrade to that a lot more than that.

A quick question...

I'm currently using a Quad Core machine with 4GB ddr2 RAM. How much of a difference would I notice with FM if I upgraded the RAM to 8gb DDR2? I currently can run a LOT of leagues and speed isn't too bad.

FM cannot and doesn't need to use more than 4GB RAM.

I thought I'd read that somewhere before too, good job I decided to ask the question. Cheers for the reply, saved me money as I won't bother with the upgrade now!

Many thanks Ishu.

If you still think that you can't build yourself and can't get a friend or pro to build it for you, get the i5 2400, 4GB, H61 Mobo, HD 6670.

I don't know what the last two things refer to (i.e. H61 Mobo and HD6670). :o Could you let me know what you meant by this?

Anyway, I think that I probably will go with PC Specialist, Ishu.

What do you think of the following selections:

Intel Core i5-2400 Quad Core (3.10GHz, 6MB Cache + HD Graphics)

Asus P8P67 LE:USE 3.0, SATA 6.0GB/s, CrossFireX

8GB Samsung DDR3 Dual-DDR3 1333MHz (2x4GB)

1GB Nvidia Geforce GT 520 - DVI, HDMI, VGA - 3D Vision Ready

1TB Serial ATA 3-Gb/s Hard Drive with 16MB Cache (7,200rpm)

24 x Dual Layer DVD Writer

Internal 52 in 1 Card Reader

350W Dual Rail PSU + 120mm Case Fan

Intel Socket LGA1155/1156 Standard CPU Cooler

Onboard 6 Channel (5.1) High Def Audio (as standard)

Onboard Gigabit LAN & Wireless 802.11N 300Mbsp PCI Card

6 x USB 2.0 standard

Windows 8 HP 64bit

19" Widescreen TFT 1360x768 2MS, D-Sub, DVI, 18/5 Panel

Logitech MK250 Wireless Keyboard and Mouse combo

I picked fairly standard, default choices for most stuff unless it was something I knew about. It comes to £690 btw. Does that represent decent-ish value?

There are a few things that I'm not sure about.

First of all, the graphics card. I picked one of the cheaper ones. Is that going to be all right for FM and Minecraft?

Secondly, the sound card. I just went for the default onboard setting. Is that going to be okay or would I be better with something else? I'm not that bothered about sound. To be honest, I prefer to put my headphones on when on the computer, so I probably won't even bother buying speakers.

Thirdly, is the monitor all right? I'm guessing I could probably get a better deal elsewhere, so I might not bother with the monitor. I wondered specifically about the resolution 1260x768. Would I be better off with 1920x1080?

Finally, how many leagues could I run with that set-up on FM? I'm eager to know! :D

Thanks again,

Crouchy.

I don't know what the last two things refer to (i.e. H61 Mobo (Explained below) and HD6670 (Its a Graphic Card)). :o Could you let me know what you meant by this?

Intel Core i5-2400 Quad Core (3.10GHz, 6MB Cache + HD Graphics) Possibly get the 2500k. Not much extra money. Better onboard GPU and allows OCing

Asus P8P67 LE:USE 3.0, SATA 6.0GB/s, CrossFireX This Motherboard does NOT allow onboard GPU. Get a H67 (On board, No OC) or Z68 (OC and Onboard both). If you aren't getting the 2500K I mentioned above, get a H61. The H67/Z68 should replace the Bolded part.

1GB Nvidia Geforce GT 520 - DVI, HDMI, VGA - 3D Vision Ready HD6670

350W Dual Rail PSU + 120mm Case Fan A little Better?

Windows 8 HP 64bit 8? Typo?

19" Widescreen TFT 1360x768 2MS, D-Sub, DVI, 18/5 Panel

I picked fairly standard, default choices for most stuff unless it was something I knew about. It comes to £690 btw. Does that represent decent-ish value? Decentish. Not great.

First of all, the graphics card. I picked one of the cheaper ones. Is that going to be all right for FM and Minecraft? Yes

Thirdly, is the monitor all right? I'm guessing I could probably get a better deal elsewhere, so I might not bother with the monitor. I wondered specifically about the resolution 1260x768. Would I be better off with 1920x1080? Hell Yeah. Get a 22" if not 24". If you aren't getting it from PCS, look at Dell U2311HM, Dell ST2220M and Benq G2220HD. In that order.

Finally, how many leagues could I run with that set-up on FM? I'm eager to know! :D65 on 2400, 80 on 2500k

Thanks again,

Crouchy.

Hi guys,

I used to play FM back in 06/07/08/09 but circumstances changed and I went off for a couple of years. Anyway looking to get back into it for FM12 this year, and just bought a new laptop (unrelated to FM...) for gaming and artistic stuff. I assume that it would be powerful enough to run a fair amount of leagues etc, but does anyone know what the required specs are to run like 20+?

My laptop: I7 2720QM @2.2GHz, 16GB 1666mhz, GTX485m 2GB, 500GB Seagate Momentus Hybrid HD.

Thanks for any help! Looking forward to jumping back into the game.

EDIT: With regard to some of the posts above, I thought I might mention that I want the game to run pretty smoothly - I'm not interested in running a million leagues to have it lag constantly. I know when it was first released the 3D engine was quite demanding on the system...

Link to post

The i7-2720QM should be able to run FM11 with onboard graphics. :D That laptop could probably run 50+ leagues...

16 GB of RAM (I didn't know you could even fit that on a laptop) and that video card is overkill - doesn't it match the Radeon 6970M? It's overkill for a lot of gaming laptops.

Hi Ishu,

Right, I'm with you now on most things!

Will look into the 2500k and get it if it isn't much more expensive.

I'll get the Z68 motherboard to allow intergrated graphics then.

The graphics card you mention doesn't seem to come up in my list of options. Instead, I get the following:

AMD Radeon HD5670/6570/6450. Would it be better to pick oine of those that the Nvidia ones?

When you say a better PSU etc., what would you consider to be the best ooption?

And yes, it was a typo for Windows 8! :D I meant Windows 7.

I think I'll definitely try to get a monitor elsewhere.

Good to know that onboard sound will be decent enough.

And 65 or 80 leagues on FM sounds fantastic to me! :)

I tried Minecraft on a friend's HP laptop with Intel HD3000 and it runs fine Maxxed out. It was using a lot more of the CPU & RAM (i7 2630QM & 4GB) than the GPU.

Also 4GB RAM should be enough for now. Corsair is better and cheaper anyway (2x4GB for 30 bucks).

http://www.amazon.co.uk/CORSAIR-Memory-DDR3-1600-Performance-CMZ4GX3M1A1600C9/dp/B004FMCJQM

With 4GB RAM and onboard, it comes out to be 622.

And I can see a lot of Ati cards there . HD5670/HD6570 is overkill anyway. You don't need better than that. 670 with this.

Dell Monitor
