Return of Stéphane Henchoz - FM 11 Liverpool

Watching Liverpool finish 7th in the league was probably the worse thing that happened in my life this year. I never liked Benitez, poor man manager, poor in the league, and finally they got rid of him. For me, he lived on the champions league success in Istanbul. What's more, he was the one who forced me out of Liverpool. He broke my partnership with Hyypia, brought Carragher into central defence, and the rest was history.

Having played more than 200 times for Liverpool, my heart was with the biggest club in England. Like many fans out there, i can't wait to see the mighty Reds back in its glory days. After i hung up my boots, i have been working on the badges. With the Anfield hotseat vacant, i knew this could be my chance. With the likes of Hodgson and Dalglish, i knew i would be faced with tough competition.

Thankfully, i got the job :)

Physios

The first thing i knew i had to do was to check out the medical team at Liverpool. I was never happy with the medical team during my time here as i was spending far too much time on the sidelines nursing my injuries. Furthermore, to be fair, the previous managers never had a full squad to work with. My pal, Harry Kewell, was complaining to me how substandard the medical team were. Wasting no time, i terminated the contract of 2 substandard physios, Ortega and Konopinkski and approached Gary Lewin.

The Squad

I was pleasantly surprised by the squad of players i inherited. The squad retains a core of strong English and Spanish players in Reina, Carragher, Gerrard, Cole and of course Torres. I would like to bring in more English players to add more of that steel and determination to the already decent squad.

Goalkeepers

As i already had my eye on young english Alex Smithies from Huddersfield as back-up to Reina, i transfer-listed both Jones and Itandje.

Defence

I was impressed with young Wilson in my first training session with the players. He will provide back-up to Agger, Skrtel and Carragher in central defence. I told Kyrgiakos that i couldn't promise him first-team football and we both decided that he should probably move on for newer pastures. Konchesky impressed me too and i was prepared to give him a season to prove his worth at left-back, with cultured Aurelio as back-up. I was blessed with first choice England right-back Glenn down the right but i needed back-up. Sammy Lee informed me young English Kyle Walker was available for a season's loan from Spurs and i told him to go ahead with the bid.

Midfield

I was happy with the quality in midfield with Gerrad, Lucas, Poulsen, Raul and young Shelvey in the center; Cole, Babel, Jovanovic, Kuyt and Rodriguez down the wings. Given time to gel, i am sure they would do fine.

Strikeforce

This is an area that worries me the most. Apart from Torres, i couldn't see goals. I am prepared to splash most of my 25 million here to buy cover to probably the best striker in the world.

SOS Children's Villages?

I have been attached to a charity organization, SOS Children's Villages since my playing days. This organisation has been around since 1949 and is an international development charity which serves to protect the interests and rights of children. A familiar face, Ruud Van Nistelrooy was also heavily involved. In fact, he was officially appointed "FIFA for SOS Children's Villages" Ambassador in the Netherlands on 1 September 2001. Short of firepower, i was looking around for goal scorers to take the load off Torres' shoulders. Of course, Ruud was on my radar.

"Congrats Stephane, you are going to have a tough time there, United will bulldoze u Reds!" Ruud joked.

"Oh come on, it's early days yet, we shall see. How are u doing over in Germany?"

"Don't talk about it, the gaffer is a jerk.."

"How does playing for me alongside Torres sound to you?" I wasted no time in bringing up the question.

"Are you kidding me? I played for United, the fans won't want me there!" Ruud looked bemused.

Just then, his wife, Leontien Slaats walked by and overheard the conversation.

"Are you a coward Ruud? Bang in a few goals and they will be on your side!" Slaats exclaimed.

"What about the United fans?" Ruud seemed hesistant.

"My dear, you are a legend there. No matter what, i am sure you will be given a standing ovation back at Old Trafford. And..... I miss England!!"

With Slaats on my side, i was confident of seeing Ruud in a Liverpool shirt... Real soon...

Unlucky Raul

I was alarmed by news that Raul Meireles was hospitalised after a freak injury during training.

"Gaffer I am.."

"Shut up Raul. You don't have to say anything. The medical team will do their best to get you back on the pitch, I want you to concentrate on your rehab. I hope to have you back in the run-in. The whole team will be behind you."

"Thanks. I appreciate it."

I was putting on a brave front. In fact, it was a blow. Raul Meireles will be out for 7-8 months due to damaged cruciate ligaments. I knew i had to do something to fill the gap in the squad.

Meanwhile, the signings of Lukaku and Van Nistelrooy were confirmed.

"I am very happy to welcome both players to Anfield," i started off the press conference.

"Fans were hoping for bigger signings than these, what do these signings mean for the future of Liverpool Football Club?" a reporter questioned.

"Bigger signings? Ruud scored 340 goals in 546 in his entire career. Where else can i find goal scorers of this calibre? And no, before you ask, no, he's not past his best. He still has plenty to offer and will be a fantastic addition to our strikeforce. And Lukaku, he has bags of potential. He's 190cm tall, unbelievably fit for his age, and has tremendous composure in front of goal. They will be immense this season."

Henchoz's debut

I couldn't have wished for an easier debut. It was the 1st leg of the Europa League 3 Qual Round at Anfield. The team was comfortable whole game and Reina was very rarely tested. It was an explosive start to the game, with the ref booking 3 players in the first 8 minutes. After the yellow card frenzy, Skrtel towered above everyone to nod home Gerrard's corner on 9th minute. He very nearly added another one 5 minutes later and he was a threat at corners whole game.

On the 24th minute, Anfield rose to a wonder goal from Ryan Babel. Cutting inside from the left, he curled a brilliant shot into the top corner with his right foot. With the crowd still in awe, Babel added a similar solo effort, this time with his left 2 minutes later. "It could finally be this lad's breakthrough season," i thought to myself.

The Anfield crowd was spoilt with belters as Kuyt completed the scoring just before half-time with another wonder goal from 25 yards with the outside of his right foot. With the crowd anticipating more in the second period, the team took their foot off the pedal as they failed to add to the four brilliant goals.

Liverpool 4 (Skrtel 9, Babel 24 26, Kuyt 45+2)

Cibalia 0

4-4-2: Reina; Johnson, Skrtel, Agger, Konchesky; Cole (Rodriguez), Lucas, Gerrard, Babel; Kuyt (Ruud), Lukaku (Jovanovic)

"What a disappointing second half, all of you will be dropped in the next game!" I joked during the post-match debrief.

And yes i wasn't kidding, the comfortable lead in the 1st leg meant that i would be able to give the youngsters a run-out in the 2nd leg.

Not bad for a debut :)

2nd Leg

In the end, it was a dull and boring draw. Chances were few and far between, Shelvey went closest when he blasted his shot against the bar. Most importantly, young players like Smithies, Walker, Wilson, Shelvey, Cairney and Lukaku got 90 minutes of european football under their belts.

Cibalia 0

Liverpool 0

4-4-2: Smithies; Walker (Johnson), Carragher, Wilson, Aurelio; Rodriguez, Poulsen, Shelvey (Cairney), Jovanovic; Lukaku, Ruud (Ngog)

After the match, i received a call from Gary Lewin.

"Hi Gaffer, bad news for you. Gerrard's out for 2 months after injuring his ankle in training."

"Send him to the specialist immediately," I replied.

Tough luck. And it's one week to the big kick-off...

The Big Kick-off

The build-up to my first ever league game as a manager was disrupted by the news of a bad injury to Gerrard during training. I decided to move Cole into a more central role and bring in Rodriguez to the right wing. Ruud was given his league debut alongside Kuyt. I was concerned about the firepower without Gerrard and Torres (He was on the bench, having just resumed full training).

We dominated the early proceedings, with half chances here and there. On the 29th minute, the good old Ruud capitalised on a mistake from the Blackpool defence and scored his first ever goal for the club. It was a classic poacher's effort. The lead was doubled on the 36th minute when Agger rose to head home a Rodriguez corner. Surely three points was in the bag.

Torres was brought on for a 30 minute run-out and i was rewarded when he completed the rout on the 70th minute. He played a neat one-two with workhorse Kuyt and blasted home in typical convincing manner. It was a comfortable league debut for me away at Blackpool.

"Lets' build on this good start and keep going! Who knows where we will end up at the end of the season," i told the lads on the bus back home.

Blackpool 0

Liverpool 3 (Ruud 29, Agger 36, Torres 70)

4-4-2: Reina; Johnson, Skrtel, Agger, Konchesky; Rodriguez, Lucas, Cole (Jovanovic), Babel; Kuyt (Lukaku), Ruud (Torres)

Away night in Ukraine

It will be a tough 10 days including the longgggg trip to Ukraine for the Europa League 4th Qual Rnd Leg 1 followed by Stoke away at the hostile Britannia Stadium. I was forced to make a couple of changes, with Aurelio coming in for the tired Konchesky at left-back and the lively Jovanovic for Rodriguez on the right flank.

We had the better of the first half with more then 10 shots but none managed to find the back of the net and my players had to be patient. Finally the goal came on the 79th minute when Jovanovic glanced a well-placed Ruud cross into the top corner. I was happy to shut up shop and was happy to head home with a 1-0 away win.

Tavria 0

Keeping out Delap Rockets

We worked hard on the training ground, anticipating an onslaught of Delap's Rockets. As usual, Stoke played their high tempo, 'in your face' football and we had to dig deep to grind out this 1-0 away win. The clean sheet was a fantastic achievement as we had to keep out 18 long throws into the box. Ruud grabbed the only goal of the game with another typical poacher's effort and we managed to hang on for the precious 3 points.

Lukaku's double

It was the 2nd leg of the Europa League 4th Qual Round. Coming off a one nil league in the 1st leg, i decided to give Lukaku 90 minutes and he justified my selection. We were all over them and went close on 15th minute when new signing Jovanovic crashed a left-footed FK off the cross bar. On the 26th minute, our dominance was finally rewarded when a penalty was awarded as Skrtel was shoved in the box during a corner. Lukaku stepped up confidently and sent the keeper the wrong way to score his 1st ever goal for Liverpool.

In an almost identical incident on the half-hour mark, another penalty was awarded. This time it was Agger who was fouled in the box during a corner-kick. Unfortunately, Lukaku's spot-kick was well saved by the keeper and he failed to double his tally. The worse was yet to come as Jovanovic was taken off injured just before half-time.

The 3 points was wrapped out when Glenn Johnson swung in a pinpoint left-footed inswinging cross into the danger area and Lukaku met with it perfectly, powering home off the cross-bar. Lukaka could have had a hat-trick if not for the penalty miss. But i wasn't complaining. A fantastic show from the 17-year-old.

Torres is back

Lukaku's display against Tavria meant i wasn't ready to leave him out. He was pleased to be given the chance to play alongside Torres. Kuyt was moved back to right wing to replace the injured Jovanovic.

"Let's do this and beat the Hammers so that we can enjoy our international break," I rallied my troops

Both sides started brightly, but we were sharper in front of goal. From Kuyt's throw, Torres spun past illunga and put in a great cross. Babel ghosted in from the left for a tap-in to give us the lead on 15th minute. Torres showed that he was back to his best when he skinned his opponent, left him for dead and lobbed the keeper from just inside the penalty area 6 minutes later. "Poor Upson," joked Ruud who was enjoying the show from the bench.

We continued to run the show and on the half hour mark, Babel picked out Joe cole just inside the area and he blasted home with conviction. We went in for the half-time teamtalk 3-0 up. The Anfield crowd was estatic. I brought on Aurelio for Konchesky at half-time as he was suffering from an earlier knock.

Sammy Lee reminded me that we were looking flat in the second half and needed fresh legs. I told Ruud and Shelvey to get themselves warmed up and get ready for action. They were brought on for Lukaku and Cole respectively. Shelvey made an immediate impact by sending a beautifully weighted through ball behind the defence. The crowd rose in anticipation as Torres got onto the ball. Unfortunately, he failed to beat the West Ham keeper.

On 88th minute, two substitutes combined to complete the rout as Ruud rose to head home Aurelio's outswinging cornerkick.

Liverpool 4 (Babel 15, Torres 21, Cole 30, Ruud 88)

West Ham 0

4-4-2: Reina; Johnson, Skrtel, Agger, Konchesky (Aurelio); Kuyt, Lucas, Cole (Shelvey), Babel; Torres, Lukaku (Ruud)

3 games, 8 scored, none conceded. The fans were happy.

The Biggest Test of the Season

I was informed that both Ruud and Lukaku suffered minor injuries while playing for their countries. This aren't particularly good news especially with arguably my biggest test of the season coming up after the international break. Speaking to the media ahead of our upcoming matchup, Chelsea boss Ancelotti revealed that he is not a fan of mine and would unlikely to be found talking to me after the match.

"What a jerk," Sammy Lee told me during our match preparation.

"Maybe he's scared of me," i joked. "I shall not waste my time entertaining him, come on let's get on with the preparation."

With both Ruud and Lukaku ruled out, i was forced to move Kuyt back upfront with Torres. Rodriguez was brought back on the right flank. In the Anfield tunnel, Torres looked fired up.

"Make sure you show them no mercy," i was pinning my hopes on Torres' shoulders with only Ngog on the bench.

"I won't let you down boss," Torres replied with conviction.

Let the show begin..

Agger fumbles

And what a start it was. Rodriguez curled a Beckham-like freekick into the danger area and Skrtel towered above Alex to power home past Hilario in the opening minute of the game. The game was opening up and it was end to end stuff. Pienaar (yes that Everton lad who signed for Chelsea) hit the bar and on a swift counter attack, Torres went on a solo run and hit the side netting.

Lady Luck was smiling at us. On the 35th minute, with a one nil lead, Pienaar clashed with Konchesky in an off-the-ball incident. I couldn't really see what was happening. Apparently, Pienaar lost his cool and got himself sent off. Chelsea was reduced to 10 men. We went in at half-time 1-0 up.

"With a man extra in the midfield, remember to close down Lampard and Essien. Stop them from running the show. Keep going guys, it would be worth it come the end of the season," the group was fired up.

We came out of half-time flying. Lucas released Torres and he crashed a shot against the cross bar back into the grateful arms of Hilario. "He's getting closer," Sammy reminded me. I nodded. Soon after, Essien powered a shot from 25 years off the frame of the goal. Anfield heaved a sigh of relief.

"Close them down!" shouted Sammy.

Oh 75th minute, Torres went down under a challenge and had to be taken off. "Sorry boss," he apologised as he walked past me down the tunnel. "Silly boy, u did well," i patted his shoulder. Ngog was brought on. On 88th minute, the bad luck continued. Agger tried to play his way outta trouble in the box, Malouda robbed him and smashed the ball past Reina. I was furious. Agger was devastated.

The match ended 1-1, with 10 men Chelsea showing fantastic spirit.

Liverpool (Skrtel 1)

Chelsea (Drogba 88)

4-4-2: Reina; Johnson, Skrtel, Agger, Konchesky; Rodriguez (Poulsen), Lucas (Lucas), Cole, Babel; Torres (Ngog), Kuyt

"We could have gotten all 3 points today. Well-played. They got lucky. Keep going lads. I want you guys to bounce back with a win against Galatasaray." i was struggling to take positives after such a disappointment.

Europa League

It was a major disappointment not being able to compete with the elites of Europe. We had to settle for the Europa League this season.

"I want you guys to show the rest we belong to the elites by winning this competition," I rallied the team.

I put out a strong starting 11, only one change from the 11 that played against Chelsea, with Lukaku coming in for the injured Torres.

We dominated the early proceedings but failed to take the lead. Our bad luck with injuries continued as Joe Cole had to be taken off after 35 minutes and Poulsen was brought on. On 42nd minute, former Sunderland captain Cana scored a screamer from 30 yards, giving Reina no chance. We went in 1-0 down at half-time.

Galatasaray began the second half on the front foot, nearly capitalising on a poor back pass from Skrtel. We laboured throughout the game and eventually suffered our first defeat of the season, losing the game 1-0.

Following the Europa League disappointment, we had to travel to Q.P.R for a league cup match-up. As usual, i was ready to give the youngsters a chance to prove themselves. I made 9 changes, with players like Smithies, Wilson, Shelvey and Ngog coming in.

We started on the backfoot and fell behind after 15 minutes, with Mackie pouncing following a defensive mix-up in the box. Carragher rallied the team on and got a captain's goal following a corner routine on the half-hour mark. He was a threat at set-pieces all afternoon. We went in leveled at half-time.

We continued to dominate proceedings. We paid for our misses when Tommy Smith broke the offside trap to put Q.P.R ahead on 65th minute. I was forced to make a couple of changes. "Go get a goal for me Ruud, you have been doing it all your career and i want you to get us back on track," I told Ruud. He nodded. Ruud and Jovanovic were brought on for Ngog and Lucas.

Almost immediately, we equalised. Walker swung in a wonderful cross and Jovanovic nodded past the keeper. "Made in England. finished in Serbia," Sammy Lee smiled. The score stayed 2-2 afte 90 minutes and we were into extra-time. Unfortunately, we tire and eventually lost the game 4-2 on extra time.

Liverpool (Carragher 30, Jovanovic 69)

"Don't be disheartened by this loss. I want you guys to learn from this loss and never let this happen again." The lads nodded.

Kuyt's Hat-trick

Following two consecutive losses and no wins in my last 3 games, i knew the honeymoon period was over. Next up was Sunderland at Anfield. We had to win this. Torres was paired with Ruud and i was sure i had enough goals in the team. It was the midfield that i was concerned with. Both Gerrard and Cole were out with injuries and i was concerned about the lack of creativity.

We started well and finally took the lead on the 24th minute. Babel cut inside and presented Kuyt with a chance he won't dare to miss. It was a goal made and scored in Holland. on 37th minute, Torres pounced and showed why he's currently one of the best forwards in the game by blasting the ball with such power that the net nearly burst. We were 2-0 up. We increased the lead just after half-time with Kuyt grabbing a poachers' effort following Sunderland's defensive mix-up.

2 minutes later, Torres doubled his tally with a fine run through the center and a fine finish over the on-rushing Craig Gordon. Anfield roared and the fans were cheering every pass by then. With the lead looking safe, Lukaku was brought on for the 2 goal hero and Torres left the field to a standing ovation from the Anfield faithful. Cairney was brought on for Lucas too.

Sunderland managed to cut the lead when Zenden curled a brilliant freekick past the helpless Reina into the top corner on 65th minute. Kuyt still had time to complete his hat-trick and finally got his match ball when he fired in from just inside the area following a corner. Brilliant display from the flying Dutchman on the right wing. Ronaldo who? :)

The Torres Show

We started off well. On 9th minute, Torres finished off a beautifully flighted cross after some neat work down the left wing by Babel. 4 minutes later, we were pegged back and it was 1-1. Furthermore, Ruud had to be taken off after a knock. The huge frame of Lukaku was thrown on upfront alongside Torres. It proved to be a blessing in disguise. Babel did wonderfully down the left wing again and sent in an inviting cross for an easy Lukaku tap in.

5 minutes before half-time, Torres doubled our lead. In typical fashion, he skinned his marker and beat the keeper at his near post. Feeling satisfied, i went back to my seat at the bench. This time, it was the Torres show. Right at the start of second half, Torres capitalised on a defensive mix-up by scoring his hat-trick. He was said to be unhappy when he was taken off against Sunderland when he was on a hat-trick. He was not to be denied here. It ended 4-1.

Dinamo Buc. 1 (Niculae 13)

Liverpool 4 (Torres 9 42 48, Lukaku 34)

4-4-2: Reina; Johnson, Skrtel, Agger, Konchesky; Kuyt, Lucas, Cole, Babel (Jovanovic); Torres (Rodriguez), Ruud (Lukaku)

"Gaffer, i was wrong to be unhappy that day. Now i understand why you took me off so early in the previous game. Thank you, i owe this match ball to you." Torres said

"Don't be silly, you deserved it. I want you to keep going, we need your goals." I replied.

"I will, thanks again," Torres nodded.

Focus back on Premier League

After the brilliant success away in Europe, the focus was back to the Premier League. The owners and I agreed that getting the club back among the Champions League places would be our first priority, the rest that comes will be bonus. We are currently 3rd in the table with 2 games in hand behind Man United and Chelsea and next up we entertain Wolves at Anfield. It was a game we have to win if we wanna do well this season.

I fielded the strongest team possible, with Torres and Ruud upfront, and Kuyt on the right. We were all over them in the first half but couldn't find a way through. Ruud spurned a couple of chances and Skrtel hit the post from a corner routine. We went in goal-less at half-time.

"You guys were fantastic. What's lacking is a goal. Keep going, be patient, we will emerge victorious eventually!" I pushed the guys on.

We started the 2nd half rather sloppily, forcing me to make a couple of changes. Lukaku and Jovanovic were brought on for Ruud and Babel respectively. The changes brought us into life. Eventually, Torres opened the scoring on 65th minute with another wonder strike, a screamer from 25 yards. I heaved a sigh of relief. 5 minutes later, it was Lukaku's turn. Almost Torres-like, he skinned his opponent on the outside and unleashed a thunderous shot off the post into the net. Sammy Lee turned and smiled at me, i nodded in acknowledgement.

Anfield was treated to another wonder goal, this time a 30 yard freekick from Jovanovic. He curled the ball with his left-foot with such power that Roberto Carlos would have been proud of it. "Great changes boss, they both scored," Sammy Lee said. 3-0 up, with 3 points in the bag, i made my final change, bringing on new signing Brazilian youngster Casemiro for his compatriot Lucas. Perhaps over-eager to impress, Casemiro went in hard for a challenge and got himself sent off. He didn't dare to look at me as he took his place back on the bench.

We ended up 3-0 winners. A good solid win.

Liverpool 3 (Torres 65, Lukaku 70, Jovanovic 77)

Torres sees Red

With Lucas on international duty, Poulsen was brought in to anchor the midfield. Joe Cole was back to add guile to the midfield. Lukaku was brought into the starting 11 after coming on and scoring in the previous game. We came out all guns firing and opened the scoring on the 2nd minute. Kuyt flicked on a right-wing Torres cross and Babel was on hand to tuck the ball away at far post. "He really has added an end product to everything this season," i told Sammy Lee.

On the 35th minute, Torres was sent off for an over-the-top challenge in the middle of the park. I was gutted and immediately called for the players to keep it tight. We managed to go in 1-0 up at half-time. It was a scrappy game all the way till the end. Fortunately we managed to keep it tight enough and emerged 1-0 winners.

Wigan 0

Liverpool 1 (Babel 2)

4-4-2: Reina; Johnson, Skrtel, Agger, Konchesky (Aurelio); Kuyt, Poulsen , Cole (Cairney), Babel; Torres, Lukaku (Rodriguez)

"Well-done guys. It was important to get the 3 points to go top despite Fernando's sending-off. Next up is a tough away game at Villa Park, i would need the same from you all to stay top." i addressed the team after the game.

Not another Red Card?!

As a club manager, it is always frustrating when your players return injured from international duty. Martin Skrtel, who has been such a towering figure in defence for me this season, came back injured and will miss the important game away at Villa. Carragher will come in to partner Agger. Ruud partners Lukaku upfront with Torres suspended for 3 games having picked up a red card against Wigan. On a positive note, Captain Marvel Steven Gerrard is back on the bench.

Villa came out flying and was all over us with their fast tempo passing. As a result, I had to tuck in the wingers and play more conservatively. Ruud picked up a knock after 1/2 an hour and i had to replace him with Jovanovic. As if i haven't had enough bad luck, Kuyt was sent off and i am not witnessing 2 sending-offs in two consecutive games. For some reason, the team came into life after the sending-off and Babel went on a couple of rampaging runs and tested the opposition's keeper. Eventually, we had to settle for a goal-less draw. I had to be happy with the point after yet another red card.

Aston Villa 0

Liverpool 0

4-4-2: Reina; Johnson, Carragher, Agger, Konchesky; Kuyt, Lucas, Cole (Gerrard), Babel; Lukaku, Ruud (Jovanovic (Rodriguez))

"Two red cards in two consecutive games is insane, do you think we have to address the players about this?" Sammy Lee reminded me.

"I won't want my players to lose that fighting will just because of the cards. I will speak to Kuyt personally. Don't worry :)" I replied.

Back in Europe

With both Kuyt and Torres serving their suspensions in the next 2 or 3 English games, they had to start this Europa league group tie against Utrecht. Torres partners Ruud upfront, Jovanovic comes in for Babel as i wanted to give him a rest and Jovanovic looked brilliant in training. Carragher continues his partnership with Agger.

We looked slow off the blocks and were punished in the 15th minute when Agger was penalised in the box and Mertens powered the penalty past Reina in convincing manner. It was all Liverpool after that but we failed to find the equaliser and had to go in 1-0 down at half-time. "Keep going, the goal will come," i reminded the lads.

We continued to threaten but lack that cutting edge in front of goal. I told Babel to warm himself up and get ready for some action. "Go get me a goal," I told him. Soon, Lukaku was thrown on too in place of Ruud. The gamble paid off as Lukaku grabbed the equaliser, stabbing home a low cross from Torres down the right channel. I responded by bringing on Poulsen for the tiring Cole. Lukaku was making a nuisance of himself in the box and his presence unsettled the opposition's defence. on 85th minute, Torres capitalised on a defensive mix-up and grabbed the winner following some neat work down the right by Kuyt the flying dutchman. It was a brilliant come-back victory and a vital 3 points for the Reds.

Carra scores on the right end!

It was going to be a tough game at Anfield against Spurs, with both Kuyt and Torres out serving suspensions. I was tempted to put Gerrard back in the starting 11 but eventually decided not to as he was not 100 percent fit. He was on the bench. Ruud partners Lukaku upfront with Jovanovic playing down the right. I was worried given the absence of my 3 best attacking players. Oh and not to forget, Skrtel was out injured.

It was a bad start to the game. I had to take off Jovanovic on the 6th minute as he picked up a knock. "That lad has got talent, but he's fragile," Sammy Lee reminded me. We were struggling in the first half and Spurs were looking better than us in all departments. Against the run of play, Carragher powered home a corner to give us the lead just before half-time. What a time to grab the goal.

On the 55th minute, Babel had to be taken off as well after picking up a knock. I couldn't believe my luck. The Anfield crowd had something to cheer about as i brought on Gerrard for the injured Babel. Amazingly, on the 60th minute, Carragher grabbed his second after heading home Rodriguez corner. Having scored on the wrong end for most of his career, he is now in his best goalscoring form of his life, scoring his third goal of the season. I was estatic after the lead doubled and the crowd were mocking the away support.

The presence of Stevie G seemed to galvanised the game. We dominated the rest of the game and could have got a couple more goals. I was happy with the 2-0 win given the absence of several key players.

Liverpool 2 (Carragher 45+3 60)

Spurs 0

4-4-2: Reina; Johnson, Carragher, Agger, Konchesky; Jovanovic (Rodriguez), Lucas, Cole (Poulsen), Babel (Gerrard); Lukaku, Ruud

You might want to slow the amount of updates per day down. People are less inclined to read them if they have so much to read. Try righting them up on word and maybe post once or twice a day. Otherwise a good story you have going here  Oh and you picked a good team to be :)

Ruud's return to Old Trafford

It will be the biggest test of my managerial career so far against the Red Devils. And it makes it even harder without the likes of Torres and Kuyt. Ruud returns to Old Trafford and partners Lukaku. Gerrard returns to central midfield and Cole moves out to the right. I couldn't have wished for a better start. On the 4th minute, in our first attack of the game, Lukaku fed a delicious ball that cuts open United's defence. Gerrard ghosted in and blasted the ball past Van Der Sar. What a start. Man United continuted in search of an equaliser but we managed to hang on and go in 1-0 up at half-time.

Man United started off second half much better than they did in the first half and Rooney found the net with a scorcher on the 55th minute. From then on, United were all over us. Rooney was running the show but they were spurning chances. The difference was clear, they had Rooney, i could have had Torres. He was serving the last game of his suspension. United sent on Hernandez and Hargreaves in search of a winner. I sent on Poulsen and Rodriguez in the last 5 minutes, hoping that we could close out the match.

The whistle went, we managed to hang on and grab a vital point. Gerrard was immense. Ruud was instrumental in his return to Old Trafford.

Routine win at Anfield

The players were all fired up after holding Man United to a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford. That result meant that we stay top of the league with 7 wins, 3 draws in 10 games. And yes, we are unbeaten. The players were looking very good in training and I was sure that FC Utrecht would find it hard at Anfield in the upcoming match. I had arguably my strongest 11 out today and was confident of a very positive result.

As I expected, we came out flying. On the 2nd minute, the attacking triangle of Gerrard, Torres and Ruud combined to good effect and Ruud slots home comfortably. 7 minutes later, it was two. This time, Ruud turned provider and laid a beautiful through ball for Torres to finish with aplomb from a tight angle. Unable to cope with our firepower, Utrecht switched to 5-4-1. Just before half-time, Ruud picked up a knock and had to come off for giant Lukaku. In arguably our best ever 45 minutes display to date, we failed to add on to the 2 early goals and went in 2-0 up. It could have been much more.

Right after half-time, Anfield witnessed a brilliant third goal. Lukaku went on a powerful run through the center before setting up Kuyt, who finished with conviction past the keeper at his near post. We were rampant. With the lead looking safe, I brought on young Wilson and Poulsen for Carragher and Gerrard respectively. There were no further goals as we won the game 3-0. The fans applauded the players off the pitch.

Liverpool 3 (Ruud 2, Torres 9, Kuyt 50)

FC Utrecht 0

4-4-2: Reina; Johnson, Carragher (Wilson), Agger, Konchesky; Kuyt, Lucas, Gerrard (Poulsen), Cole; Torres, Ruud (Lukaku)

Meanwhile, I was told that Skrtel had resumed full training. It was great news, but he would struggle to break the Carragher-Agger partnership at the moment.

Title Favourites?

I was sipping my cup of coffee and reading The Guardian early in the morning when this piece of news surprised me. My next opponent, Birmingham’s Alex McLeish claimed that we were the strong favourites for this season’s title. “Early days yet,” I reminded myself as I prepared to leave the house to meet the lads in the team bus.

I was happy to welcome Torres back into the starting 11 after he completed his 3 match suspension. He partners Lukaku upfront and I was confident of goals against Birmingham.

“They would be hard to break down, patience is the key here, don’t rush your passes! Their gaffer said we could win the title! Go prove him right!” I rallied my troops.

We were all over them right from the start and we finally took the lead on the 36th minute when Gerrard slid a nice through ball for Lukaku, who showed tremendous composure for a 17-year-old to finish the chance off. Carragher has been a consistent goal threat at set-pieces for us throughout the season so far and he doubled the lead from a Gerrard free-kick.

“Unbelievable, he is such a big goal threat now.” Sammy Lee turned and smiled at me.

On 60th minute, Lukaku broke the off-side trap to finish convincingly once more. With 3 points safe in the bag, youngsters Cairney and Wilson were brought on for their masters Gerrard and Carragher, who both had excellent games. On 71st minute, Michel was sent off for a crunching tackle on Lukaku. Jovanovic was then brought on for Lukaku as I did not want to take risks.

“Well-done lad,” I gave a pat on the gigantic striker’s shoulder. He nodded in acknowledgement.

The game ended with no further goals.

“Thank you for being such good hosts Alex, and thanks for saying such good things to The Guardian,” I said.

“Well done Stephane, you guys deserved the win, and I am still pretty sure that you guys will be able to go on to win the league with a little bit of luck.”

He was a real gentleman.

Birmingham 0

Liverpool 3 (Lukaku 36 60, Carragher 55)

4-4-2: Reina; Johnson, Carragher (Wilson), Agger, Konchesky; Cole, Lucas, Gerrard (Cairney),Babel; Torres, Lukaku (Jovanovic)

In arguably our best away display of the season so far, we emerged 3-0 winners. The team was clicking into gear, and with a relatively easy run of games to come, I was confident that we could go top soon and stay there for a few weeks at least.

Lukaku is a really fantistic signing isn't he? hoping you go all the way despite supporting Arsenal+ Dover Athletic.

He has been fantastic, 7 goals and 1 assist in 11 starts. And he's only 17!

Also worth a mention, Ruud Van Nistelrooy has been brilliant as well, 7 goals and 6 assists :)

Doing a lot better than my liverpool side atm....I should probably update that....

Liverpool probably just need a couple of good strikers to play with Torres and they will do fine! I was surprised at how 4-4-2 suits them perfectly and maybe you should try!

An Anfield standing ovation to a former United Legend?

Only 2 changes were made to the starting 11 that did so well at Birmingham. Finally, Kuyt was available for selection and he goes straight back into my starting 11 and Ruud comes in for Lukaku.

“Watch out for Fulham’s number 30 Dembele, he’s a handful and has two wonderful feet.” Sammy Lee hands out his final instructions. With us playing earlier than the rest of our rivals, we had the chance to go top for a few hours at least.

“Go out and get the 3 points and we will be top,” I sent the players out into the Anfield tunnel.

It was a good solid start to the game and we took the lead on the 17th minute when the two flying Dutchmen combined to great effect. Ruud put in a great ball on the floor for Kuyt to tap home. He was ecstatic to score on his return after 3 matches out serving his suspension. Carragher was proving to be a nuisance to the Fulham defence at corners all afternoon and it was no surprise that the referee finally blew for a penalty on the 32nd minute. The Anfield number 7 tucked away his penalty in typical fashion, giving us a comfortable 2 goal lead.

In an identical repeat of the earlier incident, Carragher was fouled in the area once more and Ruud placed his penalty in the exact same spot. We were 3-0 up before half-time. On 55th minute, Ruud turned provider, laying a perfect ball for Gerrard to power home our 4th from just outside the area. Again, I sent on Wilson and Cairney for some match experience with the win more or less confirmed.

Amazingly, we were awarded the 3rd penalty of the afternoon when Torres was fouled in the area once more. Ruud, probably the best ever penalty taker ever to have graced Anfield, tucked away his hat-trick of penalties. He couldn’t believe his luck. Almost immediately, I took him off for Lukaku and Anfield was giving a standing ovation to a former Man United great. He deserved it after two assists and 3 goals on a perfect day.

“Unbelievable feeling boss, thanks for bringing me here,” Ruud whispered into my ear as he walked past me and took his place on the bench.

Liverpool 5 (Kuyt 17, Ruud pen 33 pen 39 pen 73, Gerrard 55)

Fulham 0

4-4-2: Reina; Johnson (Wilson), Carragher, Agger, Konchesky; Kuyt, Lucas, Gerrard (Cairney), Babel; Torres, Ruud (Lukaku)

When Lady Luck is smiling at you, everything goes right. We are now top of the table above Man United.

Another penalty from Ruud

With 8 goals scored and no goals conceded in our last 2 matches, more people are taking notice of our team. Like Alex McLeish, Owen Coyle told Worldsoccer.com that he backed us to be one of the title favourites and would be incredibly surprised if we were not up there at the end of the season. He too spoke of his admiration for our flying Dutchman Dirk Kuyt ahead of our matchup. I knew it would be a tough game away at Bolton, Owen Coyle has done a fantastic job there bringing in an attractive brand of football.

I was tempted to bring in Rodriguez into starting 11 as he looked fired up in training. Eventually I chose to stick with the same side that did so well against Fulham, with both Cole and Rodriguez on the bench. It was a rainy day at the Reebok Stadium. We had the better of the chances in the first half but couldn’t find a way through until Zat Knight conceded a penalty and got sent off after 2 bookings. This was our breakthrough. Ruud stepped up and tucked away his fourth penalty in 2 games. We took the lead just before half-time.

We labored on in the second period and failed to double our lead. I sent on Lukaku and Cole for Ruud and Babel as they were tiring. 10 minutes from time, Johnson suffered a pulled hamstring and I had to take him off for Kyle Walker. We were getting a little complacent and Bolton finally managed to put the ball in the back of the net through Klasnic. I kicked the ground in anger.

“Boss, off-side!” Sammy Lee pointed out to me. I heaved a sigh of relief.

We finished 1-0 winners, I wanted a bit more from the players, but 3 points was all that matters. I was happy. On a bad note, Gary Lewin informed me that Glenn Johnson will be out for 2-3 weeks.

Walker proving a point

With 2 games in 5 days, I had to make use of my squad more. Obviously, Walker came in for the injured Johnson, Poulsen came in for Lucas and Cole came in for Kuyt. Hopefully with them coming in my team will be fresh enough to face a tough Blackburn side at Anfield.

“Watch out for that man on loan from United upfront (Mame Diouf). He’s very strong physically and would be a handful. Poulsen, I want you to track Dunn’s runs from midfield, he can be one of the best attacking midfielders when he’s on song.” As I handed out my final instructions, I could see a few nerves from Kyle Walker.

“Play your game, you will do fine. I have faith in your ability, I want to see more confidence in youself!” I attempted to encourage him. He nodded.

Carragher never fail to amaze me. At 186cm, he’s not a tallest of center backs, but he’s making a habit of popping up at corners, scoring some important goals. He got one again, this time towering above a crowd of Blackburn players to head home past Paul Robinson. That was his 5th of the season. Amazing. We continued to dominate proceedings and forced Robinson into a couple of good saves. On the 41st minute, Kyle Walker squared the ball intelligently to Captain Marvel Stevie G, who curled a beauty past Robinson into the top corner. We were 2-0 up. Walker winked at me, I gave him a thumbs up.

Straight after half-time, we got our third, courtesy of a Keith Andrews own goal. Anfield roared. With three points in the bag, I sent on Wilson and Jovanovic for Agger and Babel. On 81st minute, Lucas, who came on for Gerrard, flighted a beautiful ball above Blackburn’s defence for Torres to volley home first time. It was four and Torres ended his mini goal drought.

Liverpool 4 (Carragher 8, Gerrard 41, Andrews og 48, Torres 81)

Blackburn 0

4-4-2: Reina; Walker, Carragher, Agger (Wilson), Konchesky; Cole, Poulsen, Gerrard (Lucas), Babel (Jovanovic); Torres, Ruud

We finished 4-0 winners. I was particularly impressed with Walker, who picked up the man of the match award after coming in for Johnson. I will certainly be talking to the board about signing him up permanently come the end of the season.
