I normally buy young players who will improve over time, so my question is:

If a player aged 24 who for instance has a 3* rating and his potential is also 3 * how long would that player last before he starts to decline as a footballer?

Every player improves or declines differently based on a massive variety of different factors. It's a bit too much of an open ended question really to get one simple answer.

Ok thanks for that. So, using the above example, how do you decide whether to buy him or not.

No way to know. All players age at diffferent rates. If you need them, buy them.

If the player has not been unlucky with injuries and has decent natural fitness you should expect him to be fine until at least his early thirties.

As others have pointed out, there are no guarantees.

Depends on the position really. When the game is processing different bits of help come up and some say when a player in a certain position will be at his prime and that will normally be a good guide.

I had a CB who decided to retire at 37. He never did decline. He stated that he wished to retire before his play did start going down hill.
