Hill and Lewes Draw

Harrow Hill was left with another frustrating draw as they failed to score on visiting Lewes in their FA Cup 3rd Round Qualifying match at Larksfield Road. Hill's best chances were in the first half as twice Stephen Opaka got in free, but both times Paul Wilkerson came up with the saves. Lewes managed few chances in the first half and were pleased to still be scoreless going into the second half. Hill redoubled their efforts to get a goal in the second half, but Wilkerson was impossible to solve. Paul Catley, who had come on for an injured Karl Dryden, made the save of the match after Danny Smith sent a pass right to Emmanuel Omoyinmi right in front of Hill's net. Catley managed to parry the shot away to preserve the draw.

"Where did our offense go?" asked Heartwood shaking his head.

Bob Pearson replied, "It is there, but our finishing remains the big problem. We just aren't finishing the way we need to, to get better results.

Lewes Brooms Hill

Lewes derailed Harrow Hill's attempt to move on in the FA Cup competition as they handed them a closely played 1-0 defeat at Dripping Pan. Lewes seemed set to take the lead in the early going when Danny Smith was whistled for a push in the area, but Craig Farr saved Nicky Skinner's penalty kick. Farr wasn't as fortunate when the Hill backline wasn't able to keep Emmanuel Omoyinmi under wraps and he drilled a blast in off the right upright at 21 minutes. Hill's poor finishing contributed to their inability to rally in the match. Matthew Hampson, Stephen Opaka and later Donovan Simmonds all missed sitters and left the entire Hill staff and bench shaking their heads at another close loss.

"Well, it is pretty clear Bob, we have to find someone besides Jordan Robertson who can score," stated Heartwood.

"Nobody has stepped up yet," agreed Pearson.

"We just waste too many good chances right now. Unless we start taking better advantage- this will be a long season."

Hill Avalanche Crushes Altrincham

Harrow Hill took advantage of both good fortune and good play as they demolished struggling Altrincham 3-0 at Larksfield Road. After a couple close calls that were saved by Richard Acton, it was Lee Sawyer's long centering pass that sailed over Acton into the net to give Orient a lead on the fluke goal. With the lead, it was all Alan Wilkins as the talented 16 year old put the sword to the Altrincham backline. A quick pass from Jordan Robertson was enough to spring Wilkins to rocket a shot past Acton. Less than 10 minutes, it became a brace for Wilkins as he took a sweeping pass from Sean Coburn and made a terrific move around Acton before firing the ball into the open goal. With the 3-0 halftime lead, Hill played a conservative second half in helping Craig Farr put up another clean sheet in the 3-0 win.

"A bit lucky, but I will take the win," said a pleased Heartwood.

"Wilkins showed us something today, I hope we can keep him in the future."

"Me too."

"I thought we needed another physio, so I went looking and found Steve Devine to assist in there," stated Heartwood.

"Is he any good?" queried Pearson.

"I think so. He interviewed well and Mark Leather thought well of him and that they could get along with no problems."

"Any help he can give us on the injury front will be a blessing."

Daggers and Hill Battle to Draw

In a match that featured a bit of everything it was appropriate that the two sides came away splitting the points from a 1-1 draw at Glyn Hopkin Stadium. Hill struck for the lead midway through the first half when skipper Sean Coburn struck a scorching 25 yard free kick that hooked inside the left post past Tony Roberts. Dag & Red received the wake up call and took control of the remainder of the first half. They managed to equalize when Craig Farr made an uncharacteristic bad decision and sent a pass to Nicky Hawkins. Craig Moore was right on Hawkins shoulder and took the ball away from him, before bursting in and firing a shot past Farr for his 15th goal of the season. The Daggers continued to hold sway over the match early in the second half as Farr and the Hill backline worked doubly hard to keep things level at 1-1. Against the flow of play, Donovan Simmonds- on for Mark Russell- appeared set to give Hill the lead when he picked up the ball after keeper Tony Roberts bobbled it to him. Simmonds missed the net well wide to the left to the heartfelt sigh of relief from the fans at Glyn Hopkin. Moments later it was bad luck for Simmonds as he made a beautiful chip shot over the stranded Roberts, only to see a crazy bounce take it against the crossbar and back out. Moore missed close twice in the late stages as both sides were relieved to hear the final whistle sound. Hill midfielder Pat Lynott earned MOM honours.

Heartwood shook his head, "I know I should be disappointed- Simmonds should have had two- but mostly I feel relieved."

Pearson nodded, "They really had us under pressure- and they had a lot of good chances."

Hill Surprises Scarborough

Harrow Hill edged past Scarborough 1-0 thanks to a renewed effort in the second half of play at McCain Stadium. The first half featured plenty of excellent football from both sides as keepers Leigh Walker and Craig Farr kept things scoreless with their steady play. Hill's best chance found Walker smothering a shot from Jordan Robertson from close-in. In the opening moments of the second half Robertson demonstrated how much of an opportunist he can be. Paul Foot lost control of the ball and Robertson skinned him on the fly. Robertson and Alan Wilkins both broke in free on Walker, but Robertson took the ball around Walker and fired it into the open net for what would be the lone goal of the match. Hill defended with more determination after gaining the lead and Scarborough's best chance late in the half was John Mann hitting a screamer wide as Farr closed out the clean sheet to earn Hill a close road win. Hill rightback James Vaughan was chosen for MOM honours in the match.

"We may not have much scoring of yet, but today it certainly was timely," observed Pearson.

"True- and wins come from the combination we showed today- a timely goal and rock solid defense. I was really happy to come away with a win from this one."

"Well, David (Carns) was unhappy about losing his starting spot to James Vaughan. After that poor effort on his part in the Dag & Red match, I thought it was time to find him a new home."

"Who purchased him?"

"Ilkeston paid 2K for David. I thought it was a fair deal for both clubs."

Hill and Cambridge Fight to Draw

Harrow Hill and Cambridge staged an entertaining match in front of a packed Larksfield Road crowd as they fought to a scoreless draw. There were chances aplenty for both sides in the match, though Hill had a bit better of the best scoring opportunities. Steve Dickinson had two excellent one-on-one saves on Jordan Robertson in the first half, while Craig Farr earned MOM honours for his fine work in the Hill goal in the second half. The tempo was frenetic as both sides attacked up and down the pitch for the entire match and the crowd awarded both sides with a standing ovation following the final whistle.

"I would have liked to have won that one, but it was another draw that was well and truly earned," offered Heartwood.

"It was a good match and we had our chances, but so did they."

Vauxhall Brooms Hill

Vauxhall Motors took advantage of poor backline play in the second half of the 2nd Round FA Trophy match at Larksfield Road to fight back for a 2-1 win. Hill took the lead early in the first half when Lee Roache intercepted a clearing kick by keeper Ben Kirby. Roache slipped the ball to Aaron Burns and Burns drilled it in off the inside of the left post for his 1st goal at Hill. Hill looked comfortable throughout the first half, but couldn't build on the lead. Opening the second half, Hill came close twice but Kirby made saves on Burns and Roache. The wheels fell off at that point for Hill. Stuart Wall completely misjudged a looping cross and that left Jonathan Kitt an easy tap-in goal at the far post past Paul Catley. Wall then gifted the visitors with an ill-advised push in the area that earned a yellow card and a penalty kick. Mark Scotchford converted the penalty kick past Catley and Vauxhall had the lead. They played a determined defense down the stretch and though Hill had the possession, they couldn't get any good scoring chances and finished out the disappointing 2-1 loss.

"Bob, I have seen enough. Stuart wall is going on the transfer list," flatly stated Heartwood.

"He hasn't played well yet here..."

"He hasn't played anything other than terrible- in every chance he has had. It's time to move him."

"Well, you know I agree with the sale," offered Pearson.

"Yes, and your opinion was one of the major considerations in my decision to sell Donovan Simmonds. He just didn't seem to be adapting to our style of play very well. It was time to cash in on him."

"How much did Solihull pay for him?"

"9K. Not a lot, but not too bad for a free signing."

Hill and Accrington Draw

Harrow Hill and Accrington battled to a scoreless draw at Larksfield Road in a match controlled mostly by Hill. Hill outshot Accrington 11-2 for the match, but was only able to put 2 of those 11 shots where they would trouble keeper Danny Alcock. The Accrington backline, led by MOM Peter Kavanaugh, did a nice job of closing quickly to pressure Hill when they setup chances in the area. Hill's best chance came late in the first half when Jordan Robertson skinned defender Leam Richardson. Robertson laid the ball off for Mark Russell, but Russell blasted wide of the right post on his unmarked shot. Accrington played the last 10 minutes of the match down to 10 men as Martin Smith was redcarded for last man takedown on Matthew Hampson.

"Our finishing was terrible today," sighed Heartwood.

"If we could only have gotten a goal- it would have been enough with how well we were playing in controlling the midfield."

"Still, at least we took a point away from the match."

Forest Green Gallops Past Hill

Forest Green struck for a goal in the first minute of play against Harrow Hill at Highwood Stadium and made that goal stand up for the entire match as they defeated Hill 1-0. It was a nicely laid off pass from MOM Brian Smikle that Joe Paris was able to volley past Craig Farr to give the home side the instant lead in the match. Green used their pace advantage to keep Farr and the Hill backline under pressure the entire match and were unfortunate not to have more goals as they hit the right upright once and the crossbar once. Hill managed little offense in the first half, but generated a few chances in the second half. Nicky Harrison was steady in the Green net and kept a tidy clean sheet to help his side to a much needed win.

Heartwood was clearly frustrated, "Our offense disappeared again. We just have no consistency right now."

Pearson nodded, "We don't have a forward- besides Jordan Robertson- who has proven they can score. With our midfield also silent- well, that is why we are averaging less than a goal a game in CN play."

"It was a mistake to sell Robert Dickinson- clearly it was at this point- but without the money the club wouldn't be modestly well off. I will have to see if there are any decent forwards available that could help us when the transfer window reopens in January."

Tamworth Tangles Hill

Tamworth parlayed a nice goal and a dogged defensive effort into a 1-1 draw with visiting Harrow Hill. Hill dominated most of the match, but had difficulties as they clearly were out of sync on the attack- wasting passes all over the pitch. Tamworth struck for the lead when Martin Paterson deflected a long cross from Peter Dean past Craig Farr midway through the first half. Hill came close to equalizing in first half injury time, but a loose ball was just beyond the reach of Aaron Burns with an empty goal awaiting. Hill finally evened the match when Jordan Robertson ran down a ball on the left side and laid it back for Tyrone Berry. Berry drilled his shot inside the left post past John Mohan to make it 1-1. Hill controlled the late stages of the match, but failed to gain the match winner and split the points with the home side. Hill's Jamie Chandler earned MOM honours for his steady backline play.

"Our execution is lacking Bob. We can not afford to waste simple passes like we did today," stated Heartwood.

"The thing that most disappointed me today is how overpowered we were. We lost possession almost any time they tackled us in their end of the pitch."

"Lots to work on. We desperately need a forward who can put the ball in the net."

"How about one of our youngsters?"

"I am trying hard not to pile too much pressure on our 16 year olds, nor do I really want them gaining too much attention at this point. We will have to muddle through for now."

"Well, it won't hurt to have him go on loan- he isn't happy right now," stated Pearson.

"Sutton United offered to pay 100% of Stuart's (Wall) wages while there, so it seemed like a good idea," answered Heartwood.

"How long a loan?"

"4 months, almost to the point where his contract will be up."

Morecambe Dumps Hill

A late second half goal allowed Morecambe to steal away home with all 3 points and left Harrow Hill looking very frustrated. Hill played well enough to win the match as they dominated large stretches, but their poor finishing continued to haunt them as they missed 4 obvious sitters during the match and saw Morecambe keeper Ryan Robinson come up with two huge saves to keep things even in the second half. Morecambe took the lead in the opening moments when Stuart Fleetwood was gifted with an accidental goal as a gust of wind caused his centering pass to hook into the net. Hill spent the first half wasting good chances as they couldn't get their shots on net. Hill finally equalized in first half injury time when Jordan Robertson drilled a free kick past Robinson. Hill poured on the pressure in the second half, but couldn't get the ball past Robinson. Morecambe used a counter-attack that saw Jamie Chandler miss a last tackle before Mark Shepherd scored the match winner past Karl Dryden at 84 minutes. Morecambe's Craig Baxter earned MOM honours.

Heartwood just shrugged, "I don't know that we can play much better than that in the midfield Bob."

"If we could just finish- we would have beaten them- but we just don't seem to have the ability, other than Jordan, to do that."

Hill Kings Kidderminster

Harrow Hill finally broke out the goal scoring as they defeated Kidderminster 3-1 at Aggborough. Kidderminster looked very comfortable in the early going and Marc Newsham made a brilliant long pass to pick out Lee Barnard unmarked on the far corner of the net. Barnard had an easy time slotting the ball into the open side of the goal past Craig Farr. Hill showed life and determination as they fought back to equalize. Aaron Burns deflected a short, sharp cross from Sean Coburn past John Danby to even things at 1-1 for the first half. Both sides came out determined to gain the next goal. Kidderminster came close twice as Farr was forced to come up with fingertip saves. The deciding factor in the match became Hill's pace advantage as Burns took a quick pass from Pat Lynott and broke clean down the middle. Jason Tindall was forced to take Burns down in the area and Lynott calmly converted the penalty kick for his 1st goal of the season. Hill played more conservatively with the lead, but made Kidderminster pay for their aggresiveness when Lynott picked out Mark Russell on the run. Russell, on for Lee Roache, showed his blinding pace down the right and then feinted Danby out of position before taking the ball past him and slamming it into the open goal for his 1st goal of the season. Hill then closed out the last futile rally to claim the 3-1 road win.

"Finally!" exclaimed Heartwood. "We finally put most of the pieces together and earned a win."

"It was a close one, but yes it was earned."

"That was a terrific goal by Russell, it really took a lot of the fire out of them."

"Another first-time signing joining us Bob," mentioned Heartwood.

"Who would this be?"

"A 16 year old forward, Brian Harvey. All of our scouts think he has a lot of potential and he appears to have the physical side to play at our level."

"I will try and give him a good look on the reserves."

"Hmm, well I am planning on keeping him with the Senior side."

"Why? We already have Alan Wilkins up now and really too many forwards as is."

"Call it a hunch Bob."

Exeter Edges Hill

Harrow Hill played another determined match, but fell to Exeter 1-0 on a second half goal. Exeter had shown much better execution during the match, but Hill had shown a lot of heart on the defensive side of the ball and Craig Farr had come up with the needed saves to keep things even in a scoreless first half. The second half played out much as the first, but it was another set piece play that killed Hill as Lee Phillips slipped past Lewis Tozer to deflect a free kick from Danny Woodards past Farr for his 19th goal of the season. That was all Exeter needed as they managed to stifle the feeble rally attempts of Hill.

"Same story, different match," muttered Pearson.

"We are struggling to gain their area- it happened again today," sighed Heartwood.

"And one big mistake killed us again."

"It's a young club, we just have to keep teaching and working on the problems."

Notts County Knifes Hill

Notts County continued their winning ways as they took advantage of the lack of first line players for Harrow Hill and their continued poor backline play to score a 2-0 win at Larksfield Road. Hill was off to a solid start and had the best chance of early play as they sent Matthew Hampson in free, but Kevin Pilkington made the save, parrying away the shot. Notts County took the lead when Liam Needham sent a long cross and Andy White, unmarked as Lewis Tozer completely lost track of him, deflected it past Paul Catley. Hill was hanging tough early in the second half until Tozer, capping an awful match, sent a backpass skimming past Catley for an own-goal to give them a 2-0 lead. Hill lacked the firepower to get back into the match against the determined Notts County defense and they closed out Hill's poor effort.

Heartwood just shook his head, "That was a brutal performance."

"Without our first line players, we just couldn't stay with a club as good as Notts County," replied Pearson.

"Well, 15th place at midseason. It could be worse given our lack of scoring, but we haven't found any consistency at all."

"We just need to get the midfield working, it would help free the forwards."

Hill Sinks Southport

Two struggling clubs met at Haig Avenue and it was Harrow Hill that righted themselves as they scored two first half goals and then played firm defense in the second half to add to Southport's relegation muddle. Shola Oyedele, who had come on for injured Tim Spencer, was the architect of the first goal as he picked off a loose ball in the right corner and moved past Steve McKeown on the dribble before sending a sharp cross. Jordan Robertson slipped past Chris Lane and deflected the cross past Steve Reeves to give Hill a rare lead. Derek Duncan and Jamie Chandler then worked a superb passing play down the left side as Duncan started then dealt it to Chandler. Chandler moved down the sideline before sliding the ball back to find Duncan moving full bore past Michael Hayward. Duncan blasted a low shot past Lane to earn Hill a 2-0 halftime lead. Hill played an improved brand of defense in the second half and Craig Farr had a relatively easy time putting up another clean sheet.

"Finally, a much needed win," said a relieved Heartwood.

"Best team effort in a while. The boys were just as relieved as you to get the win."

"If we want to avoid the relegation problems at the back end of the Conference, we need to string a few good efforts together."

"We did add one forward as the transfer window opens Bob," stated Heartwood to Pearson.

"Who was it?"

"Will he help?"

"I hope so, we certainly need someone besides Robertson to step up."

Hill Buries Gravesend

Harrow Hill took advantage of another struggling club as they followed the same formula, a pair of first half goals and staunch defense, to defeat Gravesend 2-0 at Stonebridge Road. Jordan Robertson gave Hill the lead with his 10th goal of the season as he deflected a cross from Tyrone Berry past Aaron Kerr. Hill built the lead to 2-0 when Berry's short cross was perfect for Alan Wilkins to flick past Kerr inside the near right post. With the lead, Hill defended with heart and helped Craig Farr earn not only another clean sheet, but MOM honours.

"We start the New Year off nicely," commented a grinning Pearson.

"I will take the win- however we can get it.

Hill and Shrew Battle to Draw

Harrow Hill squandered a 2-goal lead in the second half as visiting Shrewsbury fought back to earn a 2-2 draw at Larksfield Road. Hill played another superb first half, but had nothing to show for it thanks to timely tackling by the determined Shrewsbury backline. Hill maintained the pressure to open the second half and it paid off when Ash Carew, just back from his long recovery from injury, whipped a shot in off the inside of the right post for his 1st goal this season. Hill moved ahead 2-0 when MOM Derek Duncan sent a long pass forward and Matthew Hampson had enough space to drive the ball past Joe Hart for his 1st Senior goal. Things started to come unraveled for Hill when keeper Karl Dryden challenged Richard Hope for a corner and lost as Hope easily flicked the ball past him to draw a goal back. The comeback was made complete when Adrian Nevins made a rash challenge in the area- which drew an immediate yellow card and a penalty kick. Neil Ashton converted the penalty kick and Shrewsbury was even at 2-2. Hill managed one last chance, but Hart tipped Shaun Miller's shot around the post to preserve the split of the points.

"What a waste!" muttered Heartwood.

"Adrian made a right awful choice. Any touch he made on that was going to be called a penalty."

"True and why does he make that choice. He had no business moving over to try and make that play."

"Youth and inexperience- they are learning but we have to have patience."

"A new round of signings from the scouting of Rob and Spencer," stated Heartwood.

"These would all be players signing their first pro contract?" asked Pearson.

"That's right- all first timers. All 16 year olds as well. Paul Reynolds is a forward with solid physcial tools, but lacking in school. Echo that comment on rightback Tom Barber. Adam James is an intruiging forward- a left footed youngster with suprising development. Joe Townsend is a fast center back. Gary Marsh is pretty good overall for his youth. Darren Fox has some pace down the leftwing, while Scott Price has good wheels on the right side. Paul Freeman has the makings of a solid leftback."

"You are sending them all to Under-18 side?"

"Yes, those are your reinforcements," grinned Heartwood.

Hill Stuns Halifax

1st placed Halifax could hardly be faulted for thinking this match was destined to be theirs after Hill's Lewis Tozer was sent off at 20 minutes for his 2nd yellow card. Instead they found a gritty Hill defense backstopped by superb work in goal from Craig Farr and a taste of the quickness of Jordan Robertson. Hill had clung to the scoreless state for much of the first half following Tozer's sending off. The complexion of the match changed in first half injury time when Greg Young sent a backpass behind Gerard Nash. Robertson seemingly had been lurking for just such a chance and he blew past Nash to pick up the loose ball. Nash vainly tried to close Robertson down, but couldn't get there in time to keep Robertson from snaking a shot past Dino Seremet into the right side of the goal for a stunning marker that sent Hill to the dressing room ahead 1-0. Early in the second half, Derek Duncan skinned defender James Smith. Duncan sent a quick pass up the middle as he saw Robertson breaking clean. Robertson had plenty of time to make a move and take the ball around a diving Seremet before driving a shot into the open goal to make it a brace. Halifax wasn't ready to quit, but continued to have problems breaking down the Hill midfield- which was led by MOM Pat Lynott. The final whistle found a jubilant Hill side celebrating, while a frustrated Halifax side left quickly.

"What a super effort!" exclaimed Heartwood.

"We certainly were a little lucky in the match, but you're right- the boys played their heart out and deserved this one."

Hill Scores Last Minute Draw at Stafford

It took a goal in the last moments of second half injury time for Harrow Hill to salvage a 1-1 draw in their trip to relegation battlers Stafford. Hill gave away the lead early in the match when Adrian Nevins made a boorish challenge in his own area and handed Stafford a penalty kick. Adam Smith converted the penalty kick past Karl Dryden and Stafford had the lead- something that hasn't been true of late for them. With the lead, they played a much more defensive match and Hill had difficulty breaking down their coverage as Hill lacked many of its regular first line players for the match. Late in the first half Craig McAughtrie was forced to take down Alan Wilkins on a counterattack and was redcarded as the last man. Coming out from halftime, Hill had unexpectedly moved away from their usual 442 formation and Joe Foote, on for Tom O'Donnell, was well up into the attack. The increased aggressiveness helped little as Hill continued to struggle on the attack. It looked like they were headed for a loss, despite controlling much of the match, when Jamie Chandler picked up a loose ball and desperately crossed for Alan Wilkins. Wilkins volleyed the cross past Barry Marchena for a dramatic equalizer as he earned MOM honours.

Heartwood shook his head, "I am thankful we earned the draw, but I am still unhappy about Adrian Nevins- that is the fourth penalty kick he has cost us in his limited play this season."

Pearson nodded, "He just doesn't have good judgement to temper his aggressiveness. I will still talk to him about it."

Bore Draw?

Some might consider the York-Harrow Hill scoreless draw that, but those fans that attended at Bootham Crescent might beg to differ. There were good scoring chances galore for both clubs through both the first and second halves and the result was a fair one as the chances were evenly distributed. Hill's best chances saw Jordan Robertson miss just wide- once at each post and also saw York keeper Michael Hilton come up with a fingertip save on a blast from Ash Carew. On Hill's side, Craig Farr was brilliant with several one-on-one saves including two late in the second half to help Hill to split the points. It was an exciting, if not filled with scoring, match.

"It could have been better, it could have been worse," shrugged James Heartwood.

"Jordan (Robertson) usually doesn't miss those kind of chances. Of course on the other side of things, Clayton Robertson rarely misses the good chances that he had today."

"What I wanted to go over with you Bob, was what you see as the state of the club. We are still a couple days away from the transfer deadline and I am trying to decide if it would be worthwhile to really bring anyone else in."

"Ok Jim, but it might pay to review our placement in the Conference National. With us currently 14th and 8 points back of Shrewsbury with us at 30 matches played and they with 29- plus their goal differential advantage- well, I think we may be as high as we can finish this season."

"I think you're likely right in that view Bob. Forest Green is even with us, but behind on goal differential. Woking is 5 points adrift of both of us in 16th and then Burton is 8 points behind us- so we will likely be battling with those three clubs for 14th place for the rest of the season."

"Still, we are 16 points up on Southport, who head up the relegation pack in 21st place."

"Yes, that does leave me a little relieved after some of our earlier struggles. Let's take some stock in the club."

"Ok, where do you want to start?"

"Keepers I guess- and remember I am talking not just about the Senior side, but also the Reserve and Under-18 side. I do want to give you a pat on the back for your work on the Under-18 side. Leading the Under-18s Group 9 by 6 points over Portsmouth is a nice accomplishment so far."

Pearson laughed, "Well, you have given me really good players. I want to talk to you about that too."

Heartwood nodded, "Ok, but let's keep on track- keepers first."

"The easiest observation is that Craig Farr is a very good one and we should keep him as long as we can."

"I plan on that."

"I know you like Karl Dryden a bit better than I do. I still think Paul Catley has potential, though he may need to play more than we can give him to develop. Alex Hards could help us, but he is very unhappy here because of not starting on Seniors. Paul Barnett has the potential to be a star there- if he continues to develop."

Heartwood glanced at Pearson, "I will consider transfer listing Alex this summer- but for now I want him on the Reserves. How about our fullbacks?"

"Our starters- James Vaughan and Jamie Chandler are very good. Tim Spencer has a nice future, but can you sign him when 17?"

"I am going to play him more as the season starts to wind down. He will alternate with Vaughan in hopes that he understands he is a big part of our future and then will try to sign him when he turns 17."

"Shola Oyedele was a nice addition, but he wants to play- and you are using him as a gameday sub- so he isn't happy."

"That's the way it is going to be. I don't want to stunt the development of our talented youngsters. I will consider transfer listing him in the summer too- because he is carrying hefty wages."

"You want Craig Timmins focusing on fullback again now, don't you?"

"Yes, now that our leftwingers are healthy again."

"Ok, he is a solid player- actually I like his future potential more than Danny Smith. But the one we really need to keep is our Under-18 leftback Carl Poole. He is just so explosive and once his skills improve we are looking at an impact player."

"He is definitely on the list to sign when he turns 17 over the summer."

"Gary Bailey is our rightback on Under-18s, he also is worth keeping when 17. I can't tell you much about Tom Barber and Paul Freeman yet though- just haven't seen them enough."

"We can wait on theirs until later in the season."

"Marcus Dydyna really isn't happy, he is another one that you should try and find a new home for this summer."

"How about our center defenders?"

"Nicky Hawkins is easily our best and most consistent backline player. Lewis Tozer has been a lot more inconsistent than I hoped coming into the season."

"True, and Adrian Nevins frustrates me. I see his talent, but he makes a lot of bad decisions."

"Don't write him off yet- he is worth keeping him at the contract you signed him too. I was surprised that you brought Neil Dobson up to the Senior side."

"He will be 17 in March. I plan on starting to give him more playing time when we get him under a new contract."

"The Reserve center backs are forgettable, with the exception of David Mills who has fantastic potential and Chris Wordsworth who could really develop nicely."

"Wordsworth will be 17 in February. I already have a new contract offer ready for him. Mills will also receive one in April. The rest of the unhappy centers on Reserves are all on the transfer list at this point. How about on the Under-18s?"

"Danny Kamara is terrific. I know he won't be 17 until December, but try very hard to keep him under contract."

"I will. Would Senior playing time help?"

"I think so- toward the very end of the season."

"Ok, I will put it on the list," grinned Heartwood.

"David Potter isn't quite as good as Danny, but keep him in mind for the future. Dave Foster can replace Danny if you move him up, so we should be fine there. You got me Gary Marsh, but I don't have a good review of him ready yet."

Heartwood leaned back in his chair, "Backline sounds pretty good, how about our wingers?"

Pearson pursed his chin with his hand, "Wingers is probably our weakest spot on the club and I think that has a lot to do with our offensive struggles. Sean Coburn is a good skipper and solid. Derek Duncan was a good signing and should be fine. I am less confident about Robert Burns, but he might be Ok. Tyrone Berry has the physical ability, but whether he improves will decide if he can really help us."

Heartwood stood up and paced, "Those are my thoughts too Bob. I will likely have to see during the summer. What about Reserves and Under-18s?"

"No help at all on the Reserves, though you just placed new signings Darren Fox there and I don't know enough about him. There is some help on the horizon on Under-18s, if we can hang onto them long enough. Both Peter Wilkinson and Alex Coulson have helped fuel our success."

"I have turned down several clubs seeking to loan both of them, so I agree with you- I hope we can hang on to them and get them signed at 17. Center mids?"

Pearson steepled his hands and stared thoughtfully, "Well, we have an overabundance of talent there." He stopped and grinned, "A bit of a good problem with all your signings there. You already have a couple of very talented youngsters getting Senior time in Ash Carew and Lee Sawyer- at least when Lee is healthy again."

"Soon, very soon. He isn't going to replace Pat Lynott in the lineup though. When Pat came back into the starting lineup, we started really making good strides. We need Pat's tackling and fierce committment there."

"Pat has been our best player this season," admitted Pearson. "Beyond those two, you have managed to work in Paul Cross and Tom O'Donnell and I urge you to get them under new contracts when 17."

"I was planning on it, though Tom needs more assurance that he has a place and will see more starting time during the rest of the season."

"Scott Harber is not bad as well, but those two youngsters have more potential than him. I can't tell you too much about the two new signings you assigned to the Reserves, as I have not seen Curtis McCarthy and Andy Wilcox enough yet."

"How about Under-18s?"

Pearson laughed, "Well with a name like Michael Owen, he has big shoes to live up to- but I really think *our* Owen has a lot of potential. Gary Howard has done the same as Pat Lynott for us on Under-18s as his tackling has helped in our winning. David Green is also a pretty good player and I could use him to replace Owen if you want to feature him a bit on the Senior side."

Heartwood shook his head, "Maybe next season on Owen, but not just yet this one. How about our forwards?"

Pearson sighed, "Start with the easy one. You showed excellent vision in getting Jordan Robertson and then turning him loose up front. He has been our only consistent goal scorer."

Heartwood bobbed his head in agreement, "I liked what I saw and he has really paid off. Some of the others I liked haven't worked out as well."

"Think about it though Jim. Forwards can take time to develop, so some of these will need patience. I still think you need to give Mark Russell more playing time- he really is a jet out there and could turn into a game-breaker up front. I was surprise you brought Brian Harvery directly up there, but after viewing him- you are right- he has immense potential, so sign him when 17 if at all possible."

"Already on it Bob."

"You should also sign Alan Wilkins, he has been pretty impressive playing as a 16 year old. It may have been a mistake to bring Shaun Miller here- he hasn't impressed me much yet. Lee Roache is a solid depth player. Aaron Burns has more potential than he has shown so far. Matthew Hampson has potential, but I am not sure if he will reach it here. I know you also brought new signing Mark Doyle right to the Senior side- so I can't tell you much on him."

"Reserves and Under-18s"

"Under-18s first, because as soon as Carl Gibson is 17 in April- sign him! Once signed, bring him up and pair him with Jordan and see if we don't catch lightning in a bottle. Carl is a fantastic player- already- he has 23 goals for us. His strike partner is Paul Wilcox and he has 21 goals, but I know he doesn't turn 17 until September so please leave him with me," grinned Pearson.

Heartwood chuckled, "Not a problem Bob, I will leave Paul there."

Pearson gave a mock sigh of relief, "You also got Steve Andrews and he should be able to replace Carl as a starter for me. Adam James and Paul Reynolds are too new to really give you much on."

"How about Reserves?"

"You have a bunch of unhappy forwards there. The youngsters Peter Langley and Misiu Mlynowski both could turn into very good players, but you will need to do a lot of moving there this summer- Darren Gwyther, Paul Jenkin, Cory Johnson, Stephen Opaka and Peter Sutton are all very unhappy."

"Ok, though Paul Jenkin may yet see some more time on the Senior side. I am considering that at least."

"I don't know if he can be convinced that he should stay, but go ahead if you think you can use him.

"Thanks Bob, I have a better idea now."

"What's the overall approach though Jim? I just want to make sure that my choices are supporting your plans..."

"You have done a great job in that Bob. One goal I hoped for was to have a group of players develop together and your work on the Under-18s is making that happen, though I agree that I will have to rob you of a couple players later in the season. Other than that, since we seem to be locked into our middle-table placement and not in danger of a relegation battle, I will be trying to give youngsters- the 16 and 17 year olds- more playing time so that you and I can decide how to approach next season over the summer."

Hill Humbles Hereford

Harrow Hill took another step forward as they knocked off another club currently topping the table as they edged Hereford 2-1 at Larksfield Road. Hill took advantage of an early gift from Hereford when defender Jamie Lenton was called for a handball in the area. Alan Wilkins stepped up and converted the penalty kick to give Hill the early lead. The lead lasted only moments though as Hereford hit back when Graham Evans slipped Nicky Hawkins marking just long enough to deflect a cross from Robert Purdie past Craig Farr. The two clubs settled down and played the remainder of the first half in a more collected defensive approach and it remained 1-1 at halftime. Hill struck in the early minutes of the second half when they caught Hereford pressing forward and executed a beautiful counterattack. Jordan Robertson unselfishly slid a pass across to Pat Lynott and Lynott took it around diving keeper Shane Herbert before slotting it into the goal to return the lead to Hill. Hill, led by MOM Hawkins then provided a determined defense that supported Farr's steady work in goal as they kept Hereford from equalizing in closing out another surprising 2-1 win.

"We weren't sharp in the first half, but the boys played very well in the second half," observed Pearson.

"Especially down the last 20 minutes. That was excellent composure and team defense we showed today. I am very pleased with this win."

"It was a nice 1-2, though I was surprised that James Vaughan got the Young Player of the Month honours over Nicky Hawkins," commented Heartwood.

Crawley Crushes Hill

Crawley played a convincing first half that found them leading 3-1 and eased home with a comfortable 4-2 win over Harrow Hill at Broadfield Stadium. Crawley used devastating crosses and lacklustre marking by the Hill backline to take a 3-0 lead in the first half. MOM Jason St'Juste scored on two headers on crosses from David Woozley and Lewis Gobern past Craig Farr. Steve Burton added a rebound goal on a ball that the Hill backline should have cleared away. Hill only managed to stay in the match thanks to a booming 30 yard free kick from skipper Sean Coburn that made the halftime score 3-1. Hill tried to rally in the second half, but that rally was cut short when Farr had to leave with an injury after Hill manager Heartwood had already used his three substitutions. Mark Russell was forced to handle the goal and allowed a strong header from Dorryl Profit to slip past him to make the margin 4-1. Hill managed to draw a goal back as Brian Harvey and Derek Duncan played a neat passing combination that found Duncan's curling pass sending Harvey in free and he whipped a shot past Phil Smith inside the far right post. Hill avoided any further damage as Russell fielded his next chances with aplomb as Hill lost 4-2. Farr suffered a broken nose and will likely miss the next couple weeks.

"Not exactly a match to build on," said Heartwood calmly.

"No, too much went wrong in the beginning. The only real highlight for me was seeing Brian Harvey net his 1st goal for us."

"That was a good one- I liked it too."

Hill Waxes Woking

In a showdown match with the club directly behind them in the table, Harrow Hill demonstrated their resiliance as they rebounded from their loss to Crawley with a convincing 3-1 win at Larksfield Road. Woking dearly wanted the match, as a win would have pushed them past Hill, and pressed hard from the opening whistle. Karl Dryden was very sharp for Hill in those early moments as he made difficult saves against both Kevin Braniff and Marcus Stewart. Hill had a few chances of their own, but missed close on a blast from Ash Carew and just wide from Derek Duncan. Hill struck for the lead late in the half when Derek Duncan showed superb vision to pick out Jordan Robertson breaking free on the left side of the pitch. Gavin Ward parried away Robertson's blast, but Alan Wilkins had ghosted in and slammed home the rebound to send Hill to the dressing room with a 1-0 lead. Duncan was again the architect early in the second half as Woking skipper Daniel Murray missed the interception and that allowed Robertson to blast a shot past Ward. Robertson then capped Hill's scoring in the match as he outraced Murray for a Dryden goal kick straight down the pitch and then moved past Stefan Stam on a neat move with the ball before driving a shot inside the right post to make it a brace with a terrific goal. Hill yielded a late consolation goal when Nicky Hawkins missed intercepting a pass from Stewart and Joel Grant drilled a shot past Dryden to ruin his clean sheet in second half injury time.

"Jordan Robertson was really up for this match today," stated Pearson.

"It was one of the best he has played for us. I also thought Alan Wilkins played well- he was in the perfect place to poach that rebound from Ward for the first goal."

Hill Buries Burton

Harrow Hill continued to show improving play as they dominated struggling Burton in an easy 4-0 win at Larksfield Road. Hill controlled the match from virtually the opening whistle to the end whistle as they only allowed Burton two shots on goal in the match. It didn't take long for Hill to gain the lead as Derek Duncan whipped in a sizzling cross and Shaun Miller deflected it past Richard Wallace for his 1st goal at Hill. Hill didn't manage to score again in the first half, but skipper Sean Coburn curled in a 25 yard free kick to give them a 2-0 lead in the opening moments of the second half. Duncan then helped earn his MOM honours when he sailed out a beautiful long pass that Lee Roache, on for tiring Miller, in free as he scored his 1st goal of the season. Lewis Tozer then finished off the scoring when he converted the penalty kick after Ryan Austin tripped Lee Sawyer, making his return from injury by subbing on for Jordan Robertson, in the area.

"It was great to see different players step up today and contribute goals," said a happy Heartwood.

"Our pace advantage had them at a loss- they were really having a tough time even completing short passes."

Weymouth Wings Hill Again

Weymouth continued to cast their evil spell over Harrow Hill as they beat them again 2-0 at Wessex Stadium. Hill was on their backheels most of the match and Weymouth took the lead midway through the first half. It was a pretty play that saw Daniel Webb lay the ball off as Adrian Webster swooped in and fired a shot past Karl Dryden for his 1st ever goal. Hill made little headway in getting back into the match as they could not put a shot on net in the first half. The second half saw Hill start to control the play a bit, but Arran Lee-Barrett had all the answers in net as he made terrific saves on both Jordan Robertson and Alan Wilkins to keep Hill off the scoreboard. Weymouth finally put the match away when MOM deflected a corner from Webster past Dryden in the dying moments to make the final score 2-0 for the home side.

"Not our best effort," quietly commented Pearson.

"We were a bit tired, but still we didn't come close to playing well enough to beat them- with how well they are playing."

"At least they didn't quit though, I was proud of that."

Worksop Washes Out Hill

Worksop used a key goal and a stellar performance from their keeper as they hung on to edge Harrow Hill 1-0 at Babbage Way. The first half was scoreless thanks to fine work from Worksop keeper Mark Davidson as he made two key saves on Tom O'Donnell and Lee Roache to keep Hill off the board. Early in the second half, Worksop counterattacked and Lee Morris made a tremendous individual effort as he danced past tackle attempts by both Nicky Hawkins and Lewis Tozer before taking the ball past Craig Farr and scoring the only goal of the match. Hill poured on the pressure to try and even things as they had some great opportunities- but all for naught. Brian Harvey, on for Shaun Miller, missed well wide with a wide open net from 40 yards due to a great play from Lee Roache. Davidson made excellent stops on both Roache and Harvey as he kept his clean sheet and earned his side the three points today while earning himself MOM honours.

"We had our chances," muttered Heartwood.

"They were there, we just didn't capitalize today. Despite Brian Harvey's miss of the open net- I thought he played pretty well."

"Yes, he did. It hurt us badly when Roache had to come out injured and we only had him up front.

Hill Slips Past Scarborough

Harrow Hill used a strong second half effort as they defeated Scarborough 2-0 in a closely played match at Larksfield Road. The first half was a grueling display of physical football as fouls were found everywhere and there wasn't any space given by either defense. Little wonder there was only 4 shots recorded by both sides in the half. The second half opened up considerably as both sides wanted the three points badly. Alan Wilkins hard work in reaching a loose ball first and pushing toward their net paid off when he was held in the area. Wilkins calmly converted the penalty kick past Leigh Walker and it was 1-0 for Hill. Scarborough pushed hard up the pitch and the Hill backline and keeper Craig Farr managed to stave off some good chances. Hill put the match away when Tyrone Berry sent a hard cross into the middle and Wilkins deflected it past Walker for his brace to cap the 2-0 win.

"Tough one. They wanted this badly," observered Pearson.

"Little wonder since we are now even with them in the table- and on goal differential. They still have a match in hand on us, but now their 13th place is within reach."

Hill Rolls Past Altrincham

Struggling Altrincham had a gameplan that they thought would work against Harrow Hill- beat them on the counterattack. Altrincham though they have had little success this season, is one of the quicker squads in Conference National. The plan didn't work out well though as instead Hill sent Jordan Robertson and Mark Russell steaming up the pitch on their own counterattacks as they defeated Altrincham 3-0. Hill struck for the lead midway through the first half when Russell drilled a shot off the upright past Richard Acton and Robertson was there to send the rebound into the open goal for his 15th goal of the season. Russell then showed off his blinding pace as he ran onto a long through ball from MOM Paul Cross and ripped a low shot past Acton to earn Hill a 2-0 halftime lead. It was more of the same in the second half as the Altrincham backline was trying to press forward. Russell scooted past all of them to cap Hill's scoring for the day as he made it a brace. With a 3-0 lead, Hill concentrated on helping Craig Farr earn a clean sheet. The Hill win, coupled with Scarborough's loss, moved them into 13th place on the table.

"It was great to see Mark Russell finally break out with a stellar effort," said a pleased Heartwood.

"He had been wanting another starting opportunity, he certainly made the most of it today."

Daggers Extend Streak

Harrow Hill and Dag & Red battled through a taut match, but it was Dag & Red that came up with a late goal to edge the Hill 1-0 at Larksfield Road. Neither side had much in the way of good scoring chances in the first half as both sides were showing determination in defending on their end of the pitch. After the scoreless first half, The Daggers grabbed the lead midway through the second half when Tresor Kandol slipped in behind Nicky Hawkins to deflect a long cross from Ric Montebello past Craig Farr. Hill could not get a good chance after falling behind and went quietly in the 1-0 loss.

"I thought we might get a better result, but we lost heart when Kandol scored," commented Heartwood.

"Sean Coburn is supposed to provide leadership when that happens. I just didn't see that from him today, nor did he have a good match."

"Congratulations Bob!" offered a pleased Heartwood.

Harrow Hill Captures Group 9 Under-18 Title

Harrow Hill Under-18s maintained their phenomonal season as they completed their title quest by clinching the Championship with 5 matches remaining on their 24 match schedule. The Hill Under-18s have won 17 of their 19 matches played, and lost once. Harrow Hill Manager James Heartwood credited his Assistant Manager Bob Pearson, "Bob has done terrificly well with the youngsters and they really play the way that we were hoping. It bodes well for the future of the club."

Hill Clubs Cambridge

Harrow Hill dealt Cambridge a big blow in their hope to move up and capture a Playoff spot in Conference National as they defeated them 3-0 in front of disappointed crowd at The Abbey. The pace was quick in the early stages and both sides were attacking up and down the pitch, playing very entertaining football. Hill struck for the lead when Mark Russell roared in to pressure keeper Steve Dickinson, who was well out of his net. Dickinson mishandled the backpass and Russell launched a 40 yard shot into the goal to stun both Cambridge and their crowd. Less than 5 minutes later, Cambridge was in severe trouble as John Mackie tripped Russell and earned his 2nd yellow card and an early shower. On the ensuing free kick, Jordan Robertson blistered a 30 yard blast past Dickinson and Hill moved ahead 2-0. In first half injury time Robertson made it a brace of free kick goals with a curving 25 yard blast past Dickinson after Paul Green had hacked Robertson down at the edge of the area and drawn an immediate redcard. With only 9 men, Cambridge played a quiet second half, just trying to stave off the Hill attacks. Hill wasn't intent on scoring again and played a possession half to run out the time and earn Karl Dryden a clean sheet in the 3-0 win.

"We were very opportunistic today," commented a beaming Pearson.

"Jordan Robertson really impressed me with his free kicks today. You're right we took advantage of our chances. I wish we had gotten another goal or two in the second half, we may need them for the differential by the time the season is done."

"It was a relief Bob."

"Well, for all of us it was a relief too Jim- when we heard."

"Because of our frugal approach the Board gave me several mixtures of transfer budgets and weekly wage budgets to select from. We have a transfer budget of 1.7 Million and a weekly wage budget of 18K."

"Isn't our current wage budget only 6K a week?"

"Actually, just a shade under 7K a week. That is the advantage of our approach with youngsters. By the time they get up around 25, they can earn a lot of money in transfer sales- this is *the* economic approach for small sides."

"It only works if you can identify, teach and have success with the youngsters though."

"True, without success- you will have a well to do club with no fans."

Harrow Hill Signs Heartwood to New Contract

The Harrow Hill Board was pleased to announce that they had re-signed current Manager James Heartwood to a new 4-year deal. Hill Fells Forest Green

Harrow Hill edged Forest Green 1-0 in a battle royale at Larksfield Road. With both sides desperately needing the win to stake their claim on a higher mid-table placement, it wasn't too surprising to see a lot of heart and determination. Both sides lacked execution in the first half as each squandered good chances with poor passing and shooting. Forest Green had their best chance of the first half when Michael Rankine was sent away free on a goal kick, but he shot over the net with Craig Farr visibly relieved. Forest Green also came close on several corners and free kicks as they worked some nice plays, but couldn't stretch the twine. Hill took advantage of a mistake to take the lead in first half injury time. Keeper Scott Bevan mis-hit a pass and Mark Russell turned on the jets to reach the ball at the edge of the six-yard box and he then fired a shot underneath Bevan for his 5th goal of the season. Hill played a sturdy defense in front of Farr in the second half and used superior tackling to help limit the visitors to mostly long-range blasts. Bevan was sharp in keeping his club in the match as he made a diving stop on a blast from Pat Lynott. Hill celebrated a win for Manager James Heartwood, who signed a new deal with the club today, and also solidified their hold on 13th place in the table over Scarborough and Forest Green with 5 matches remaining.

"Nice way to show the new contract was worth it, eh?" asked Pearson.

"It was a tough win- but a win that we needed."

"All of them earned the recognition, that is for certain," agreed Heartwood.

Hill Sweeps Player of Month Honours

Harrow Hill swept the March Player of the Month honours for Conference National as Mark Russell captured the Player of the Month award and Nicky Hawkins was selected as Young Player of the Month. Besides the two winners, Hill also had the second place player in each ballot as Jamie Chandler was second to Russell and Jordan Robertson was second to Hawkins.

Hill Slips Past Accrington

The fans at Crown Ground were stunned at the final whistle. Despite a dominating performance for much of the match, host Accrington wound up on the wrong end of a 2-1 scoreline as Harrow Hill slipped past them on a superb fightback. Accrington had looked much the better club for most of the match. They were unable to turn their chances into goals during the first half, but the scoreless first half had seen them in possession of the ball for most of the time. Hill still seemed on their backheels to start the second half and it didn't take long for Accrington to finally gain the advantage as Leam Richardson threaded a pass through to David Brown and he whipped a shot past Craig Farr after Danny Sm. Hill seemed to gain life as Shola Oyedele and Shaun Miller subbed on. Oyedele, Pat Lynott and Derek Duncan played a precision passing triangle that freed Duncan to send a blistering cross that Ash Carew deflected past Danny Alcock for the equalizer at 67 minutes. Hill was fully charged offensively now and the match took on a frenetic pace. Farr made a dazzling save on Paul Mullin and Ian Craney missed just over the net for the home side. Alcock made a nice save on curling blast from Jordan Robertson. It appeared the two sides would split the points, until Accrington yielded a late free kick from the center of the pitch. Richardson became the goat of the match as he handballed in the area on Oyedele's free kick. Oyedele then stepped up and whisked the penalty kick past Alcock for a dramatic match winner and his 1st goal at Harrow Hill. Young Tim Spencer was awarded MOM honours for his animated play at rightback.

"Now that was the kind of spirit we need to bring with us to every match. We never quit fighting for this one," offered a tired Heartwood.

"True, but we have to get them to understand they can't be standing around and letting the other club control the match. We let them walk all over us in the first half."

Hill Trumps Tamworth

Harrow Hill, aided by two first half penalties, had just enough scoring to hang on for a wild 3-2 win over last place Tamworth at Larksfield Road. Scott Stamps handed the Hill the lead when he held Sean Coburn in the area. MOM Lewis Tozer converted the penalty kick off the inside of the right post past John Mohan. Six minutes later, the referee didn't hesitate to call another penalty when David Bampton pushed Robert Burns from behind. This time it was Alan Wilkins who stepped up and converted the penalty kick for his 10th goal of the season. Though Hill dominated much of the first half the solid Tamworth defensive play kept them from really getting any more scoring chances. Hill gave one back in the second half when Paul Cross made an ill-advised back pass that Josh Scott stepped up and intercepted. Scott had Karl Dryden stranded as he had been coming out of the goal to collect the pass, but Scott drilled his 45 yard shot off the right upright. None of the Hill players could get back before Calvin Andrew reached the rebound first and fired it into the open goal to bring Tamworth right back into the match. James Vaughan helped key a return to the two-goal lead for Hill as he made a terrific through ball that found Wilkins behind his marker. Wilkins then made a quick move before hammering a shot past Mohan to make it a brace. Tamworth kept fighting though and drew another goal back as Gary Sawyer crossed to Robert Kean and he outleapt Jamie Chandler to flick it past Dryden at 84 minutes. It was tense at Larksfield Road, but the final whistle found Hill still holding the 3-2 margin.

"Whew. I thought we were going to wind up with something less than a win," muttered Heartwood.

"We did makes things a bit dicey. It should have been a lot easier if we could have controlled the midfield, but they did play well."

"We are still making a nice statement for next season, if nothing else. The boys are really showing more maturity now."

"True. That is what we will have to build on this summer."

Morecambe Mauls Hill

The 2-1 scoreline at Christie Park does little to tell the true tale of the match as host side Morecambe could have won this match by much more if not for the fine work of Craig Farr. Morecambe was flying from the opening whistle as they seemed to have much more in the way of legs today. The home side took the lead at 17 minutes when Albert Jarrett outraced James Vaughan down the left side and found Richard Harris had completely lost the marking of Nicky Hawkins as Harris deflected the cross past Farr. Morecambe moved ahead 2-0 in the second half when Kenny Pavey skimmed a pass to Stuart Fleetwood and Fleetwood struck a blazing shot past Farr into the far left corner of the net. Hill managed a consolation goal as they went to all out attack. Ash Carew found space and drilled a shot past Ryan Robinson after Lee Roache crossed to him in the area. That was all for Hill though as Morecambe managed to play keep away with their passing for the remainder of the match. The loss ended Hill's slim hopes of gaining a Playoff spot.

"The boys played hard, but not very effectively today," observed Heartwood.

"Our execution was lacking on offense and we spent a lot of time scrambling on defense- we didn't play our positional defense very well at all."

"Well, with the loss- it is time to start looking at some of our youngsters in the last couple matches."

Kidderminster Tips Hill

Kidderminster managed to score the only goal of the match late in the second half as they defeated Harrow Hill 1-0 at Larksfield Road in Hill's final home match. The Hill lineup featured two youngsters making their Senior debuts- defender Neil Dobson and rightwing Scott Price and looked very out of sync with all the new additions for the match. Kidderminster had more of the play in the first half, but Paul Catley kept them from turning any of their chances into goals. The match was well on what appeared to be a scoreless draw pace when Rufus Brevett's long pass was deflected by Martin Paterson past Catley at 80 minutes. Hill had no answer for the goal and the final whistle found them with a 1-0 loss to close their campaign at Larksfield Road.

"Well, not a particularly good effort," said Pearson.

"Nothing meshed well today, we gave away the ball a lot. It could have been a draw, but Dobson was hesitant to challenge Paterson because of the earlier yellow card and that gave him enough time and space to flick it in."

Exeter rolled over Harrow Hill 5-0 at St.James Park to end Hill's season on a down note. The match meant something to Exeter who was gunning for 2nd place, but meant nothing for Hill which was assured of finishing in 13th place. Because of that, few Hill regular first line players were in the lineup. Instead the debut of Carl Gibson and more appearances by youngsters were the highlight of the Hill lineup. Dean Moxey got things started for Exeter with a 25 yard free kick past Craig Farr. Malvin Kamara deflected a corner in for their 2nd goal. Moxey made it a brace when he knocked in a rebound. Lee Phillips whipped a blast from the edge of the area and Craig Watkins finished off the scoring when he converted a penalty kick as Hill showed little of anything in the match.

"Well, that didn't go well," sighed Heartwood.

"It was a learning experience- and not a very good one," agreed Pearson.

"Ah, well, summer is almost here..."

"Calls for a celebration Bob," said a beaming Heartwood. "You did a great job with them."

"It was the players Jim, you know that," said an also smiling Pearson.

A Double for Hill

Harrow Hill completed an unusual double as their Reserve side joined their Under-18 side in capturing top honours. Hill Manager James Heartwood was quick to credit Assistant Manager Bob Pearson for his job in also guiding the Reserves to the top spot, "Bob deserves the lion's share of the credit. He has done great job of working with our youngsters and I have to hope that this bodes well for the future of our club."

"Pretty quiet summer Jim?" asked Pearson.

"I wanted to wait until the Board made their wishes known to me before I evaluated who we might wish to pursue. I also am hoping that we might be more attractive now to players who are without jobs."

"Still, you have been signing those that turned 17 to new contracts."

"Yes. It was good to get Alan Wilkins and Paul Cross under contracts now. Much less worry about losing them that way."

"How do you see our development plan this season?"

Heartwood leaned back in his chair, "Hmm, well I see a two-fold process this season Bob. We have an older 'core' club and the developing youngsters that you did such a good job with last season. This season the best of the youngsters will start gaining playing time as understudies for the older players. Based on that development, we will know where to go next as the season progresses."

"That sounds fine to me, since I know some of them are ready for the next step."

"How does the club stand financially?"

"Extremely well actually. With the 150K TV money we are now 2.6 Million in the black. The Board's weekly wage budget is 19K a week, but we are only at just over 6.5K a week- so plenty of room there. The Board didn't agree to finally make us a professional club, but they did promise to upgrade our training facilities again."

"They did a nice job on the first upgrade, but I agree more is needed."

"We will review the club later, just before the season Bob."

"Well, they provided a pocketful of change for us in the sales- and it helps with the weekly wages..." stated Heartwood.

"They were all ready for new horizons. Hopefully none will come back to haunt us," agreed Pearson.

Hill Sell-off

Harrow Hill today announced the finalization of various transfer sales that will see several players on their way to new homes. Among those sold were Shola Oyedele (9K to Exeter), Scott Harber (10K to Kingstonian), Craig Timmins (7K to Hereford), Stuart Wall (free transfer to Berwick) and Adam Hitchen (free transfer to Cheshunt). Also Cory Johnson and Michael Johnston were both released on free transfer yesterday as their contracts expired.

Though there are many rumors regarding acquisitions for Hill, the only one announced yesterday was the free transfer purchase of 19 year old Keeper Ben Hamer from Reading. Hamer will reportedly work in rotation with established Craig Farr and Karl Dryden as the lead Harrow Hill keepers. The rumors have Paul Catley moving to the transfer list.

Hill Signs Shahin

Harrow Hill announced the signing of 18 year old Winger/Forward Jammal Shahin. Shahin had been released from the Grimsby youth program and was signed on free. Hill Manager Heartwood stated that "Jammal brings versatility and exciting offensive abilities to the lineup. He will likely challenge for a role on one of the wings."

"I was surprised that we were able to defeat visiting Partick in our first friendly of the season," said Pearson.

Heartwood nodded, "It was surprising, but not that Jordan Robertson and Alan Wilkins were our scorers in the win."

12.7.07

"Two more unhappy players have found new homes..." said Heartwood.

"Ah, you found buyers for Paul Catley and Joe Foote?"

"Yes. Airbus paid us 24K for Catley and Foote went to Connah's Quay for 12K."

"Not bad amounts for players who weren't going to play much for us this season."

"Thurrock bid on Peter Cawson, so I let him go on free transfer to them," stated Heartwood.

"That shouldn't hurt us now that you have improved our depth at winger."

"I don't think I expected us to be playing this well, this soon," said a pleased Pearson.

"It was a good performance to beat Dumbarton at their own place 3-0, but friendlies are nothing to be too excited about- what happens when the curtain rises on the regular season is what matters," replied Heartwood.

"Still, you have to admit we showed good teamwork all the way through. Two goals on rebounds means we are getting players to the right place on the pitch."

"Yes, that's true. I was also happy with Ben Hamer's play in goal. He looks like he might be a good addition."

"I know what we have Bob, but I also know that getting him on free transfer is a good deal. He had skills that can really help us, not the least of which is the fact he has speed up and down the right wing."

"Doesn't he prefer forward?"

"Yes, but he understood going in that I would call on him to play rightwing."

Hill Nabs Norris

Harrow Hill today announced the free transfer purchase of 19 year old Winger/Forward Rob Norris from Boston United. Hill Manager James Heartwood was pleased with the addition, "Rob brings terrific speed up and down the rightwing to us, as well as good presence on the ball. He should really help us this season." Where this leaves Hill Skipper Sean Coburn is an open question that wasn't addressed by Heartwood.

"That wasn't a solid performance," said a disappointed Heartwood.

"Well the only goal of the match was a fluke one, but yes we could have beaten East Stirling," agreed Pearson.

"Hmm, I have to say I was disappointed in our performance," noted Heartwood. "I was expecting a better effort out of everyone, but we threw away passes right and left and didn't look like we had practiced at all."

"True, we didn't show much of anything to Cinderford today. We were fortunate to escape with a scoreless draw after Ben Hamer saved the penalty kick."

Heartwood shook his head, "Karl Dryden has already quietly been telling the press he deserves a shot at starting more, but he didn't prove anything to me today- that was a dumb redcard he took to give them the penalty that Hamer saved."

25.7.07

"That was a good friendly- a nice comfortable 4-1 win over Dublin City," said a relieved Heartwood.

"We certainly were much sharper in that one."

"We need to get off to a better start in Conference National play this time, and I am hoping the performance today helps us springboard up."

"I agree. Let's go over who we are carrying on the Senior side- so I know who will be on Reserves and Under-18s."

"Ok Bob. I will still be carrying Karl Dryden on the Senior side, but clearly Craig Farr will be #1 keeper and Ben Hamer will usually be filling in when needed."

"How about leftback and rightback?"

"Jamie Chandler is our starter at leftback. Carl Poole turns 17 tomorrow and I expect to use him as the alternate once I get him under a new contract. Danny Smith will also help provide cover for Chandler. On the right side, Tim Spencer will be our starter, but James Vaughan will see a lot of time too."

"I am hoping your plan works out on our center defense."

"Me too. I know it is a bit of a gamble starting 17 year old David Mills with Nicky Hawkins, but I think they are our best pair. Offering cover for them will be Lewis Tozer, Adrian Nevins and our other youngster Neil Dobson."

"Our wingers seem much improved this year."

"I hope so. Playing Rob Norris there is playing him out of his best position, but I think he can really do well on rightwing and offer an impact on our offense. Derek Duncan is smooth and silky on the left. Jammal Shahin will be a gameday sub, but also will be the first choice to fill in for either of them- I like him a lot. Robert Burns will also offer cover on the left, Scott Price on the right and Tyrone Berry can offer more cover on both sides."

"What about Sean Coburn?"

Heartwood sighed, "That is a tough one Bob. I really think we should transfer list him now, because I can forsee him being very unhappy with so little playing time. Still, I am hesitant to do that- given his play for us in the past."

"His play toward the end last season didn't help us at all."

"True and I have to factor that into the decision."

"Center mid?"

"Ash Carew and Pat Lynott are the starters. Pat is in the last year of his contract, so I may sell him if a club steps up for him during the season. Behind them will be Lee Sawyer, Paul Cross and Tom O'Donnell to start with. A very young group except for Lynott, but I have high hopes."

"We have a wealth of forwards this year."

"Yes, a very nice collection of them. Jordan Robertson and Alan Wilkins are the starters based on last season's efforts. Mark Russell, Brian Harvey, Carl Gibson, Aaron Burns, Shaun Miller and Mark Doyle will provide cover."

"At least we have more depth all the way around this time."

"Hopefully, it will be enough. We have to get the youngsters up to speed quickly. The way I see this Bob is that this is the season we start to make the transition over to all the promising youngsters you helped develop last season. I am hoping we can aim for a playoff spot this season while doing so, but would settle for getting the youngsters into place and gelling with the current club while we hopefully avoid the relegation muddle."

"One down, one to go," commented Heartwood.

"I wasn't sure why you put Danny Smith and Aaron Burns on the transfer list," asked Pearson.

"They are both in the last year of contracts and I really don't see either of them being happy with minimal playing time. Given that, it was time to find them new homes now- when we have a chance of making money on the sale."

"How much did Danny Smith bring?"

"8K from Solihull. I am still waiting to hear who Burns chose- he had about 10 offers."

"I notice you didn't list Sean Coburn?"

Heartwood nodded, "I decided that his leadership is needed on the club. Since he wouldn't net us much in sale- we might as well let him play out the last year of contract here."

"Aaron Burns picked Notts County out of his suitors," commented Heartwood.

"How much do we get in the sale?"

"35K with additional 30% sell-on clause."

"He might be worth more than that."

"I know, but that was what we could get. I am glad he chose them because that moves him out of Conference National at least."
