psychonaut
2020-2021 === KIDSGROVE ATHLETIC === NPOWER LEAGUE 2 SEASON SUMMARY League Board: Avoid Relegation. Media: 23rd. Cannot really believe how well we did this season, but it so very nearly went wrong due to silly errors on my account. With no money in the club warchest, I decided to plunder the best young talent available from the Premier Division and Championship - not easy, but I'm starting to realise that if a player is over a certain figure when it comes to his price tag, then chances are he will have no intentiion of coming to us on loan. With our new look team on board, we launched an assault on League 2, winning 4 of our first 6 league matches. We found ourselves at the top end of the table, blowing away any pre-season expectations that we were to be involved in a relegation dogfight. By early December we were sitting comfortably in 3rd, but we then had a horrible run of luck, taking only 1 point from 5 games. I feared the worst as we slipped to 7th - had our bubble burst? The lads bounced back with a 5-1 win vs Morecambe on January 13th, and the team found top gear again as we set off on a run of 15 games which saw us win 10, lose 2, and draw 3. With 6 games to go, we were in 2nd spot and with a good points lead over the teams below us. But we so very nearly blew it, due to my stupidity when arranging loans. I'd brought in loan players in January, and renewed loans for existing loanees, but I'd only given them 5 month contracts - unfortunately, the league season would run a bit longer than the start of May. It was a hairy run to the end of the season, as we won only 2 out of our last 6 games, and we needed a miracle to hang on to an automatic promotion slot. If any two out of Tranmere, Leyton Orient, Oxford United won their last match, we would drop into the Playoff positions. We were thrashed by Morecambe, but the unthinkable happened: Tranmere, Orient, and Oxford all lost to teams at the other end of the table. Kidsgrove Stadium erupted into a sea of noise, and blue and white. We're going up to League One As the season wound down, Kidsgrove offered me a new 1 year contract, which I signed. Talking of contracts, Rochdale tried to lure me away mid-season. They were sitting pretty in the Championship playoffs, but I felt a sense of duty towards The Grove and turned them down. Rochdale slipped to 17th anyway. So there we are, onwards and upwards, and 2 steps away from the top table. This season has taught me a valuable lesson about loan signings though... Finished: 2nd (Promoted). Cups FA Cup Beat Hinckley and Woking to reach the 3rd Round. Lost 3-1 to Southampton. League Cup Beat Scunthorpe of League1 and masscred QPR (CH) 4-1 to reach the 3rd Round. Came unstuck against Premiership side Ipswich, losing 3-1 in Extra Time. JPT Bradford City beat us 1-0 in the Northern Section 1st Round. Staffordshire FA Senior Cup Another great year for our "reserve" squad...Beat Stoke Reserves 1-0 in the Quarter Finals. Bumped off our fierce rivals Leek Town 3-0 in the Semi Final. That set up a Final against Newcastle Town at Lyme Valley Parkway Stadium. Even though most of my loan signings had left, we still had enough strength to demolish them 5-1, and lift the cup for the 3rd time during my time as manager. SQUAD NEWS Raided the Premier Division and Championship for loans this season and, as the summary shows, it payed off big time. I'm planning the same sort of strategy for next season too, but this time round, I'll be sure to sign them until the end of the season. Both of my goalkeepers decided to leave before the start of the season, and I struggled to find anyone of quality on the Free Transfer market. But I was lucky to find a young keeper at Rochdale who served us well this season. That didn't impress our second choice keeper, who demanded first team action - I gave him his chance, and he let in 4 goals to earn himself a place on the transfer list. Need tp get the wage budget down, so I don't envisage any forays into the Free Transfer market next season. It'll be loans again to compliment our strongest players like Aaron Martin and Elliot Jordan. Best Players Top Scorer: 18 - Brian Cotterill Loan signing from Burnley. Did a fine job for us this season, and looks to have a good career ahead of him if he keeps up his form. Highest Avg Rating: 7.40 - Aaron Martin Had another great season. Aaron controls the defence, and is fairly adept at scoring too - head or foot, he pops them in now and again. This Season's Transfer Activity. GOAL OF THE SEASON This fine 90th minute strike from left-winger Gary Sidewell in our 3-1 victory over Hull City was voted League 2 Goal of the Season. [video=youtube;kdl2lkcWvGo] NEW CLUB RECORDS Highest League Position: 2nd in npower League 2. Highest Attendance: 5700 v Hull (League 2). Highest Gate Receipts: £70,000 vs Hinckley (FA Cup 1st Rnd). AK22
Well done on promotion! Shrewd move by the looks of it, bringing in the loanees. I'm always concerned that it's difficult to have any continuity in the squad if you rely too heavily on loan players, but fair play for making it work
psychonaut
Just picked up this save again, after a few months away. 2021-2022 Left Kidsgrove on 13th March, 2022. Wasn't making a great deal of progress with them in League 1, and when Cardiff City knocked on my door with a contract, I decided to end my 12 year stay at Kidsgrove. Cardiff weren't in the best shape in the Championship, sitting just above the relegation places. I managed just 2 wins and 1 draw in our final 8 games of the season, but it was somehow enough to avoid the drop. The last game of the season was something of a joy - we beat QPR 2-0, sending them down to League 1. Kidsgrove Athletic dropped back down to League 2. 2022-2023 === CARDIFF CITY === NPOWER CHAMPIONSHIP Media Prediction: 16th. Board: Mid-table Finish. League The new season began in fine fashion with a 2-0 win away at West Ham. Our form then took a real dip, and I thought we were going to have a season of hellish performances. I decided to take a fresh approach to the team tactics, and completely redesigned the way we were playing. Slowly, but surely, we started to improve. With good wins, and well fought draws against tougher teams, we cemented a mid-table position for most of the season. Towards the end of the season, there was a real chance that we could snatch a play-off spot. However, dropped points at lowly Peterborough, and a terrible performance against Notts County on the last day of the season, robbed us by the narrowest of margins. Still, we finished 9th - Cardiff's best season since 2010/11. Cups FA Cup: Lost 3-2 to Blackburn Rovers in the 3rd Round. League Cup: Beat Cambridge Utd 2-1 in the 1st Round. We were then thrashed 5-1 by Newcastle United. SQUAD A very busy season this year as far as delving into the transfer market went. Brought in a number of loan signings, but most didn't work out. There was very little transfer money available, so most of our signings came in on free transfers. I was happy to get Brian Cotterill on a free. He'd impressed me during his loan spells at Kidsgrove, and I was lucky to snatch him up when Burnley released him. As the season wound down, we signed José Mukembe who had been released by Chelsea. There was a buzz of excitement as he put pen to paper, and he's tipped to be a real star. The team worked well as a unit this season, although I was concerned at times with our defensive line and strikers. Lapses in concentration at the back, and terrible misses in front of goal didn't help us at times when we needed results. Discipline was also a problem at the start of the season, with 7 red cards before October. I cracked down with warnings and a fine, which did the trick. A bit of work to do next season, as I'd like to chase promotion, but we'll see what happens (and FM2012 will be out too). Best Players Top Scorer: Dan Harding - 16. Best Avg Rating: Javier - 7.13.
