2018 November Round Up

Sao Paulo 0-0 Flamengo

A frustrating start to the month as we were denied by some last ditch defending and good goalkeeping against Sao Paulo.

Flamengo 1-1 Ceara

Another dropped 2 points; this time at home to Ceara. Ronaldinho cancelled out Danilo Alves opener but we were unable to find the winner.

Fluminese 2-0 Flamengo

Awful result that leaves us struggling to keep up with the 4 sides ahead of us in the table. Tarta opener the scoring from the spot after 42 minutes and got his 2nd 8 minutes from the end as we crashed to defeat against our rivals.

Flamengo 2-2 (3-3 on aggregate) Cortiba (Copa Sudamericana Quarter Final 2nd Leg)

Our month goes from bad to worse as we get knocked out of the Copa Sudamericana on away goals. Dakson put us in front before Marcos Paulo levelled the tie at 2 goals each. Diego Mauricio put us back in front and we looked to be heading for the semis until Ciro scored in the 2nd minute of added time to send the visitors through.

Flamengo 1-0 Sport Recife

We finally got our first win of the month in unconvincing fashion against lowly Sport Recife. Diego Mauricio grabbed the only goal of the game after 56 minutes.

Corinthians 2-1 Flamengo

Another defeat as we crashed to Corinthians to put another dent in our hope of making the Copa Libertadores. Renato Gaucho and Elias Olivera put the hosts 2 up inside 21 minutes before young winger Marcelo Carioca grabbed his 1st goal for the club.

Flamengo 4-1 Vitoria

The first really good performance for a month as we hammered Vitoria. Fernando's goal was quickly cancelled out by Gauchinho before Bruno Paulo put us back in front. As the game went on there was only going to be 1 winner and Diego Mauricio and Hugo Leonardo added to our lead.

Review:

Shocker of a month; 2 defeats and knocked out of the Copa Sudamericana by a team we should have beaten comfortably. 3 games to go now in the season and it looks like we might have to settle for 5th which would put us into the preliminary round of the Copa Libertadores and give us a couple of extra games we could do without.

2018 December Round up

Palmeiras 2-0 Flamengo

With 2 games of the season left we are now guaranteed to finish 5th. 1 place above where we were predicted to finish and in the final Copa Libertadores spot. With the pretty much year round Brazilian league we will find out who we will be facing in the preliminary round in just over a month's time. A Felipe own goal and a Vitor Hugo strike made sure our final away game of the season ended in dissapointment.

Flamengo 1-1 Ponte Preta

With our spot guaranteed and with Ponte Preta going down this turned into a bit of a lacklustre affair. Rodrigo Rojas gave us the lead before Lucio grabbed the equaliser.

Flamengo 4-2 America (MG)

We ended the season on a high as both sides went for it in a game with nothing but pride at stake. Goals from Diego Mauricio and Welinton put us 2 up at the break but America came out flying at the start of the 2nd half and a Jean Coral brace had them level within 9 minutes. Mauricio again put us in front before Marcelo Carioca made sure of the points a minute from time.

Review:

It felt like we were counting down the days this month. Knowing we were pretty certain to finish 5th meant there wasn't a great deal to play for and ultimately our performances probably reflected that.

2018 Season Review - 2019 Season Preview

Brazilian First Division:

Ultimately we have to be happy with our performance since I took over. Considering where we were when I took over; we started like a house on fire and for a while it looked as if we may crack the top 3 but in the end we just couldn't maintain that form. Knocking Santos off their perch has to be the eventual aim but at the moment they are a class above. Quite a few good individual performances and the form of Diego Mauricio was superb.

Copa Sudamericana:

Dissapointed to go out at the quarter final stage to Cortiba; we really should have beaten them and got into the semi finals.

2019 Season

Media Prediction: 6th

Board Expectation: Qualify for Copa Libertadores (Top 5) & Win Rio State Championship

Odds: 16/1 (5th Favourites)

The aim for this season has got to be to get closer to Santos and crack the top 3. We should also be at least aiming to get through the Copa Libertadores Preliminary Round and make it into the group stage. The minimum aim for the Rio State Championship is to win it; nothing else can really be seen as a success seeing as the club have won it the past 3 years before my arrival.

In the transfer market we have to clear some of the dead weight. We are very close to the wage budget and my aim is to reduce a squad that at the end of last season had 87 players in it across the first, reserve & youth teams. A few of the players are out of contract and some will be being sold. We do have some very talented young players at the club though and I would like to try and blood some of them in the Rio State Championship early on to try and give them some experience and also to make sure my first team are fresh for the start of the first division and also our continental games.

2019 Rio State Championship Opening Stage Round Up

Flamengo 4-0 Friburguense

We got our season off to a winning start by cruising to a 4-0 win in our opening game of the year. Diego Mauricio opened the scoring for us after half an hour as last season's top scorer started where he left off last year. Rithely added the 2nd before the break and then Maikon Leite and Maranhao completed the rout in the 2nd period.

Duque De Caxias 0-3 Flamengo

2 wins from 2 as we strolled to victory in our first away game of the year. Bad news though before this game as I failed to realise that Atletico Minero had made it to the Brazilian Cup final and despite being beaten by Corinthians that meant they were in the Copa Libertadores leaving us in the Copa Sudamericana. Diego Mauricio made it 2 in 2 to open the scoring before a brace from Maicon wrapped up the points.

Flamengo 3-0 Olaria

We carried on rolling as we took apart Olaria at home. Welinton's header got us the lead after just 8 minutes before Diego Mauricio kept up his fine scoring start to the season by bagging a double.

Volta Redonda 1-4 Flamengo

A shock in this game as wee not only conceeded our first goal of the season but we also found ourselves behind as well. Max scored the hosts opener but they were in front for just 3 minutes as Diego Mauricio levelled. Mauricio grabbed 2 more before the break to complete his hat trick and when Marcelo Carioca scored in the 2nd half the points were safe.

Flamengo 7-0 Portuguesa (RJ)

Our best win of the season so far as we smashed Portuguesato make it 5 wins from 5 an d book our semi final place. After scoring a hat trick last time out Diego Mauricio went 1 better this time scoring 4 of our goals to give him an impressive return of 11 goals in 5 matches so far. Rodrigo Rojas, Welinton and Jorginho Paulista also got themselves on the scoresheet as we demolished the visitors.

Macae 0-1 Flamengo

Our toughest game of the season so far as we took on 3rd placed group 2 side Macae. The hosts gave us some trouble but ultimately we saw them off with a goal from who else but Diego Mauricio.

Flamengo 1-1 Vasco

A dissapointing result as we lost our 100% record at home to 2nd placed Vasco. Maikon Leite put us in front in added time in the first half only for Ananias to level in the 2nd half.

Flamengo 3-1 Fluminese (Semi Final)

We returned to winning ways by defeating Fluminese in the semi final. Maycon had put the visitors in front before Maikon Leite equalised. Rodrigo Rojas then put us in front and with Fluminese chasing the game Diego Mauricio added an injury time 3rd on the break.

Botafogo 1-2 Flamengo (Final)

The opening stage title was wrapped up with a victory against Botafogo. Maicon gave us the lead only for Renaldo to level 2 minutes later. Player of the year so far Diego Mauricio grabbed the winner in the 72nd minute to leave us feeling confident about the rest of the Rio State Championship.

Review:

Fantastic start to the season so far winning 8 and drawing 1 of our 9 games so far. Diego Mauricio has been electric and i've been able to blood some of our younger players as well giving them good experience and meaning our first team squad should be fresh when the first division starts. Frustrating to not be in the Copa Libertadores when I though we were but it now makes me even more determined to get there this year. We have cleared out a lot of the average players and the squad I have here now is definitely better than last year's.

2019 Rio State Championship Closing Stage & Brazilian Cup Round Up

Sampaio Correa 0-2 Flamengo (Brazilian Cup 1st Round)

A glitch in the game meant this tie was only 1 leg rather than 2; something i've not come across before. Anyhow fortunately we won the 1st leg thanks to Maikon Leite and Maranhao's goals.

Flamengo 2-0 Bangu

We kicked off our closing stage campaign in fine form with a comfortable victory over Bangu. Maikon Leite put us in front before Diego Bairo's header doubled our lead and sealed the win.

Fluminese 3-3 Flamengo

We avoided our first defeat of the season with a dramatic late fight back to steal a point against Fluminese. Diego Mauricio's goal had led us in at the break a goal to the good. Fluminese though came out firing in the 2nd half and Tarta got the hosts level. Fredy Guarin and Adriel then completed the turn around and put the home side firmly in control. Marquinho Galhardo's strike 2 minutes from the end though gave us hope and a minute into injury time Mauricio scored his 2nd for a share the points.

Joinville 4-4 Flamengo (Brazilian Cup 2nd Round 1st Leg)

This cup tie turned into a classic as we took on the least Brazilian sounding team in the competition. When Diego Mauricio gave us the lead after 4 minutes it looked as if it may be a long day for the minnows. Despite Leonardo getting the hosts level after 21 minutes they only had parity for 3 minutes before Diego Bairo nodded us back in front. Again though Leonardo struck and in injury time of the 1st half Danilo Dias gave the hosts a shock lead. Mauricio drew us level midway through the 2nd period before Leonardo's goal 11 minutes from time looked to have earnt them a surprise win. Mauricio though had the final word and saved our blushes late on by completing his hat trick.

Americano 0-2 Flamengo

After 2 draws and 7 goals conceeded we got back to winning ways and kept a clean sheet in the process. Welinton nodded in the first before Marquinho Galhardo kept up his recent good form by bagging the 2nd.

Flamengo 3-0 Madureira

Young winger Marcelo Carioca was the star of the show for us in this game grabbing a 2nd half brace to seal all 3 points after Diego Mauricio's 1st half effort.

Cabofriense 0-2 Flamengo

Another comfortable win this time against winless Cabofriense put us back to the top of our group. Marquinho Galhardo scored the opener before Welinton added the 2nd.

Flamengo 3-1 (7-5 on aggregate) Joinville (Brazilian Cup 2nd Round 2nd Leg)

We progressed to the 3rd round of the cup with a comfortable home victory over Joinville. Maicon and Marquinho Galhardo both scored in the opening 16 minutes to leave the visitors with little chance of progressing. Despite Roberto's goal they never really had a chance and Jorginho paulista sealed the victory.

Flamengo 3-1 Boavista (RJ)

Our semi final spot was bopoked with this victory as we made light work of Boavista. Daniel's opener gave us the kick we needed and we responded quickly and efficiently. Jorgingho Paulista made it 2 in 2 before Fernando put us in front. Marquinho Galhardo made sure of all 3 points with our 3rd of the game.

America (RJ) 0-0 Flamengo

A dissapointing draw with America left our hopes of finishing top in the balance and left us relying on results elsewhere.

Flamengo 2-0 Botafogo

24 hours earlier Vasco beat Fluminese to ensure victory for us would be enough to finish top of the closing stage and overall table. Victor Ferra chose the perfect time to get his 1st of the season scoring after just 2 minutes. Jorginho Paulista wrapped up the points and top spot late on.

Flamengo 2-1 Madureira (Semi-Final)

After comfortably seeing off Madureira earlier in the closing stage they put up a better fight this time around. Diego Mauricio put us in front early on before Carlos Alberto levelled. Mauricio though had the final say smashing home the winner 15 minutes from time.

Flamengo 2-1 Vasco (Brazilian Cup 3rd Round 1st Leg)

A good win for us put us within touching distance of the quarter final. Jean Acosta and Diego Mauricio scored to put us in control before Rodrigo Dinamite blew the tie open with a goal of his own.

Fluminese 2-4 Flamengo (Final)

We wrapped up the Closing stage and the Rio State Championship with a dramatic victory at the Maracana. Welinton nodded us in front before goals from Bebeto and Rafael Moura turned the game around. Jorginho Paulista got us level before a Tarta own goal put us back in front. Marquinho Galhardo then wrapped up the victory 11 minutes from time to give us our 4th Rio State Championship in a row meaning we now have 1 more than Fluminese.

Vasco 1-2 (2-4 on aggregate)Flamengo (Brazilian Cup 3rd Round 2nd Leg)

With the Rio State Championship won our attention turned back to the Brazilian Cup and we booked our place in the quarter final with victory away from home. Afonso put the hosts in front on away goals after 4 minutes but that lead lasted just 2 minutes as Rodrigo Rojas equalised. Jean Acosta then put us in front on the night and effectively killed off the game with his goal.

Ipatinga 1-4 Flamengo (Brazilian Cup Quarter-Final 1st Leg)

We demolished Ipotinga and put ourselves just 90 minutes away from a semi-final with this victory. Diego Mauricio's opener was cancelled out by Marcio before he restored our advantage. Rodrigo Rojas added a 3rd and then Vitor made it 4 to leave us looking even better ahead of the 2nd leg

Review:

Our great start to the season continued as we wrapped up the closing stage title and oviously must importantly the Rio State Championship. That title victory givers us 1 more than rivals Fluminese and 4 in a row. Our form in the Brazilian Cup is also promising although a few of the games have been against lower league opposition we now have a great shot at making it into the semi-finals.

2019 May/June Round Up

Flamengo 2-1 Sao Paulo

Great start to the first division as we pick up victory over a good Sao Paulo side. Guilherme put the visitors in front before Neguete turned the ball into his own net to level. Diego Bairo powered home a header to seal the win a minute from time.

Flamengo 1-0 (5-1 on aggregate) Ipatinga (Brazilian Cup Quarter Final 2nd Leg)

4-1 up from the 1st leg we sent out a reserve team to finish the tie off and that's exactly what they did as a Lucio own goal gave us a 1 goal victory on the night and booked our place in the semi finals.

Flamengo 5-2 Juventude

2 from 2 in the league as we demolished Juventude. We were 4 up inside 38 thanks to goals from Maicon, Renie and 2 from Maikon Leite the 1st a penalty. Juventude rallied in the 2nd half and Severinho got 1 back before renie grabbed his 2nd of the game. Andrezinho got a late consolation for the visitors to restore some pride.

Atletico Minero 0-2 Flamengo

Victory in our first away game of the new first division season. Maikon leite put us in front early and centre back welinton headed home the 2nd in 1st half injury time to complete the victory.

Santos 3-0 Flamengo

We were brought back down to earth with a bump at champions Santos. Neymar put the hosts in front before Diego Quintero doubled the advantage. Maranhao's own goal made it a day to forget as Santos grabbed a comfortable win.

Flamengo 0-0 Palmeiras

A dull draw in a game neither side looked like winning.

Flamengo 2-0 Internacional (Brazilian Cup Semi Final 1st Leg)

A really good victory for us in the 1st leg leaves us in a great position to make the final. Welinton nodded home the opener and Diego Mauricio completed the scoring late on to give us a good advantage heading into the 2nd leg.

Figuerense 0-3 Flamengo

After 2 league games without a win we bounced back in style with a comfortable victory. Goals from Welinton and Diego Mauricio put us 2 up inside 11 minutes and when Vitor added the 3rd after 66 we were home and dry.

Internacional 3-1 (3-3 on aggregate) Flamengo (Brazilian Cup Semi Final 2nd Leg)

Despite losing we progressed to the final on away goals. Welinton turned a cross into our net to put the hosts in front but diego Mauricio had us all square before the break. Lipe put the hosts in front on the night and when Norbeto scored late on we were in store for a dramatic finish. We held on though and made it through to the final.

Flamengo 4-1 Sport Recife

A comfortable victory over Sport Recife kept up our good start to the season. Welinton scored a brace either side of Hiago's equaliser. Maicon slotted home a penalty and then Vitor finished the game off.

Corinthians 1-1 Flamengo

A valuable draw against fellow high flyers Corinthians. Renato Gaucho put the hosts in front before Maikon Leite grabbed us a share of the spoils.

Review:

Good start to the season; dissapointing defeat to Santos but the champions are still the team to beat. Good progress in the Brazilian cup and we now have a final appearance to look forward to.

2019 July/August Round Up

Flamengo 4-2 Vitoria

Diego Mauricio was again our star as he bagged himself 4 goals as we saw off a late fightback from Vitoria. 3 up after 72 minutes we were suddenly put on the back foot when Itacore and Otavio got the visitors back in the match. Mauricio though had the final say as he grabbed his 4th of the match.

Botafogo 1-1 Flamengo (Brazilian Cup Final 1st Leg)

A nervy affair ended with a draw as both sides tried not to lose this 1st leg. Ronaldo scored the opener for the hosts but they had the lead for just 4 minutes before Maikon Leite equalised.

Fluminese 0-7 Flamengo

We demolished rivals Fluminese with a fantastic win. Diego Bairo grabbed a brace early on before Renie and Diego Mauricio made it 4 at the break. In the 2nd half Victor Ferraz, Jorginho Paulista and then Fernando all bagged themselves a goal to complete the rout.

Flamengo 1-1 Cruzeiro

A decent draw against a good Cruzeiro side. Amaral's opener was cancelled out by Welinton as we shared the points.

Flamengo 2-0 (3-1 on aggregate) Botafogo (Brazilian Cup Final 2nd Leg)

A comfortable victory saw us win the Brazilian Cup against Rio rivals Botafogo. Fernando gave us an early lead before Diego Sanguinetti's own goal made sure of victory.

Flamengo win Brazilian Cup

Flamengo 1-1 America (MG)

After our cup victory we dropped 2 points in the league against America. Felipe's unfortunate own goal was cancelled out by Diego Mauricio.

Internacional 0-2 Flamengo

We bounced back from our draw with victory over Internacional. Luizao slotted home the 1st from the spot before Kadu's own goal.

ABC 0-2 Flamengo

Victory was as easy as ABC in this one as 2 2nd half goals saw us claim victory Fullback Para's low strike gave us the lead on the hour before the 4th own goal in as many games gave us our 2nd as Gil turned the ball home.

Flamengo 2-1 Cortiba

3 wins in a row now thanks to goals from Diego Bairo and a Carlos Alberto own goal. Ciro got 1 back for the visitors but we held on for all 3 points.

Botafogo 0-2 Flamengo

A comfortable win over the side we beat in the cup final. Diego Mauricio grabbed the opener after 41 minutes and Vitor completed the win after 67 minutes.

Flamengo 4-0 Gremio

A demolition of Gremio saw us make it 5 in a row. Fernando's 25 yard opener put us in front before Maicon doubled the lead a minute before the break. Dakson stroked home the 3rd in the 73rd minute and Maranhao completed the comprehensive win in the final minute of the game.

Ceara 1-5 Flamengo

Our impressive run continued as we took apart Ceara. Jean Acosta scored the opener before Diego Mauricio doubled the lead. Vitor made it 3 before Danilo Alves pulled a goal back for the hosts. In the 2nd half Vitor slotted home a penalty and then Maranhao scored the 5th.

Flamengo 4-1 Vasco

Vasco became the latest side to be run over by us as we steam rollered our way to another victory. Welinto gave us the lead at the break although that advantage was cancelled out 3 minutes after the interval by Afonso. Jean Acosta put us back in front before Diego Bairo nodded in number 3. Rafael Copetti's own goal 2 minutes from time completed Vasco's misery.

Review:

Fantastic 2 months for us ending with 7 wins in a row. If we can maintain this form then we have a great shot at breaking Santos domination over the league. To lift the Brazilian Cup as well is an added bonus and means whatever the outcome of the league we will now be in the Copa Libertadores next year.

2019 September/October Round Up

Sao Paulo 3-1 Flamengo

After 7 wins in a row we started the 2nd half of the season off in dissapointing fashion. Diego Bairo had put us in front only for a Felipe own goal to level. Guilherme then put the hosts in front and Rhodolfo completed the win for Sao Paulo.

Flamengo 2-0 Atletico Minero

We bounced back with victory over Minero thanks to 2 late goals. With the game seemingly heading for a draw Maicon drove in the opener after 82 minutes and then 6 minutes later Jean Acosta grabbed number 2.

Juventude 0-3 Flamengo

With our Copa Sudamericana campaign kicking off in 3 days time we decided to put out a reserve team for this game and the gamble paid off spectacularly. Young striker Pituca was the star of the show as he bagged his first ever hat trick for the senior side.

Flamengo 2-0 Vitoria (Copa Sudamericana 2nd Prelim Round 1st Leg)

A good victory for us as we restored our first team to the starting line up and gave ourselves a great chance of progressing. Pituca scored the opener before Diego Mauricio hit the 2nd late on.

Palmeiras 3-3 Flamengo

A late fightback from Palmeiras robbed us of 2 points away from home. Gilsinho's opener was cancelled out by 2 Diego Mauricio goals and a header from Welinton. Gilsinho got 1 back for the hosts after 72 and then Renan crashed home the equaliser 2 minutes into injury time.

Sport Recife 0-0 Flamengo

A really frustrating draw as despite creating a host of chances we were unable to find a winner.

Vitoria 3-3 (3-5 on aggregate) Flamengo (Copa Sudamericana 2nd Prelim Round 2nd Leg)

A draw against Vitoria made sure that we progressed into the 1st round proper. Edson scored the opener before Everton Heleno made the tie level on the night. Marcelo Carioca put us back in front in the tie before Alanilson levelled things up. Vitoria still needed another goal though and Diego Mauricio scored on the break to finish things off. 9 minutes from time he added his 2nd to give us a draw.

Flamengo 5-2 Figuerense

Back in league action we came back from 2 down to claim all 3 points. Willian Rocha and SAndro Marcel had put the visitors in control before a Rocha own goal got us back in the match. Diego Mauricio equalised before grabbing his 2nd after 67 minutes later. 3 minutes later Rocha's day was complete as he received his marching orders. We took full adavantage of the extra man as Mauricio completed his hat trick before Jean Acosta scored the 5th.

Flamengo 3-0 Corinthians

This could be A crucial victory over fellow title challengers Corinthians. Maranhao scored a brace either side of Diego Mauricio's goal as we wrapped up the points in the 1st half.

Libertad 0-0 Flamengo (Copa Sudamericana 1st Round 1st Leg)

A battling draw sees us head into the 2nd leg with everything still to play for.

Flamengo 1-1 Santos

Not a terrible result but not great as we battle to a draw against champions Santos. Maikon Leite put us in front before Sidimar equalised.

Flamengo 3-1 Fluminese

Another late show rescued us as we grabbed all 3 points against our relegation threatened rivals. Cadu put the visitors in front before Maranhao levelled. Dakson put us in front 3 minutes from time and then Pituca completed the win a minute into injury time.

Flamengo 3-1 (3-1 on aggregate) Libertad (Copa Sudamericana 1st Round 2nd Leg)

Victory saw us progress to the next round as we saw off Paraguayan side Libertad. Pituca put us in front and Marcelo Carioca grabbed the 2nd. Jaime Fretes got 1 back but Luizao's penalty sealed the win and our progress.

Cruzeiro 3-1 Flamengo

A poor performance saw us crash to defeat against Cruzeiro and saw our title hopes dealt a big blow. Flavinho was the star for the hosts bagging an impressive hat trick. Jean acosta's lone strike was no consolation for us.

America (MG) 1-2 Flamengo

We bounced back with a much needed victory over America. Vitor scored the opener and Rithely looked to have made sure of the win 12 minutes from time. Stefano though got 1 back 5 minutes from the end to ensure a nervy finish.

Review:

All in all a decent 2 months overall. We had a couple of dissapointing results but overall I can't complain about our form. Progress made in the Copa Sudamericana as well gives us a chance of another trophy as well. In other news I was out of the blue approached to be Switzerland boss. They finished top of their qualifying group for Euro 2020 and with only 3 friendlies between now and then i decided to take up the offer and return to International management.

2019 November Round Up

Flamengo 3-1 ABC

A much needed victory in the league as we came from behind to defeat ABC. Elvis put the visitors in front but Vitor quickly equalised. Diego Mauricio then grabbed us the lead before Welinton finished the game off.

Flamengo 1-1 Penarol (Copa Sudamerican Quarter Final 1st Leg)

A late equaliser from Damian Alvarez cancelled out Jose Varela's own goal and leaves us with work to do when we head to Uruguay next week.

Flamengo 4-1 Internacional

3 wins in a row now in the league as we made light work of Internacional. Diego Mauricio opened the scoring after 5 minutes and Maikon Leite made it 2 after 20 to put us in control. Leite added a 3rd after 56 before Marcio Tinga got 1 back for the visitors. Welinton though made sure their hope was short lived as just 2 minutes later he grabbed our 4th.

Penarol 1-5 (2-6 on aggregate) Flamengo (Copa Sudamericana Quarter Final 2nd Leg)

An astonishing display saw us march easily into the semi finals. Rithely's 8th minute opener was the only action of note in the 1st half. After the break though the game came to life as we ran wild. Jean Acosta's brace and Welinton had us 4 up within 16 minutes of coming back out from the changing rooms. Batista grabbed a consolation for the hosts before Maikon Leite grabbed our 5th.

Cortiba 0-3 Flamengo

Our good form continued as we marched to victory over Cortiba. Rithely and Marcelo Carioca were bnoth on target in the 1st half and Vitor added a 3rd after the break to keep the pressure on those above.

Costa Rica 2-2 Switzerland (International Friendly)

A fantastic late fight back saw us grab a draw in my 1st game in charge of Switzerland. With the hosts in control thanks to goals from Celso Borges and Esteban Madrigal we were heading for defeat. That was until Eren Derdiyok gave us hope in the 89th minute and then 2 minutes later Fabian Lustenberger drilled home from the edge of the box to give us a draw.

Guatemala 0-4 Switzerland (International Friendly)

My first win as Switzerland boss came in comprehensive fashion against Guatemala. Eren Derdiyok gave us a goal lead at the break and his 2nd half penalty made it 2-0. Gabriel Aroche's own goal then made it 3 before sub Matteo Marucci slotted home number 4.

Flamengo 5-2 Botafogo

A crucial victory over our Rio rivals as we put in a fantastic 1st half effort. Diego Mauricio gave us a 14th minute lead and he doubled that 8 minutes later. Sinho pulled 1 back only for Renie and Rithely to also score and leave us firmly in control. Dakson grabbed number 5 before Cristiano got a consolation for the visitors.

Gremio 1-3 Flamengo

Another fantastic victory saw us move up to 2nd in the table and keep the pressure on our title rivals. Diego Mauricio grabbed the opener before Alan Patrick equalised. Maikon Leite put us back in front and Dakson then sealed the win to give us all 3 points.

Vitoria 0-4 Flamengo

Our title dreams are very much alive as went top of the table with a comprehensive win over Vitoria. Centre back Welinton turned goal scoring hero as he grabbed 3 headers and that along with rithely's goal gave us our comfortable win.

Atletico Minero 0-0 Flamengo (Copa Sudamericana Semi Final 1st Leg)

The tie is still very much in the balance as we battled to a hard earned draw against Minero.

Flamengo 1-0 (1-0 on aggregate) Atletico Minero (Copa Sudamericana Semi Final 2nd Leg)

Our hopes of the quadruple were kept alive thanks to the only goal of the game from Diego Bairo. we will now face relegation threatened Vasco in the final and with us having to play them in the final league game of the season we will have to play them 3 times in 8 days.

Review:

A great month; progress to the Copa Sudamericana final where we are now odds on to win the trophy plus our league form gives us a great chance of lifting 4 trophies this year. The run in though will be tough and our final 4 matches will be played in the space of 8 days streching our squad to its limit.

2019 December Round Up

Vasco 0-1 Flamengo (Copa Sudamericana Final 1st Leg)

Victory away from home puts us within touching distance of lifting the Copa Sudamericana. Ricardo headed home the only goal of the game after 17 minutes.

Flamengo 3-1 Ceara

With Corinthians & Santos having already won we knew the pressure was on us and after 9 minutes it showed as Dinda put the visitors in front. Maikon Leite equalised 7 minutes later from the spot and on 36 we were in front thanks to Maicon. Our nerves were never really settled though until 10 minutes from time when Pituca scored our 3rd.

Vasco 1-1 Flamengo

We went into this game knowing victory would give us the title. If we failed to win then victory for Corinthians at Internacional or a win for Santos at Botafogo would mean we missed out on the title. After 14 minutes Santos took the lead; a minute later and Corinthians were a goal up now we had to win. In the 38th minute Santos double their lead and after 55 they made it 3 now there was nothing for it victory was the only result that would do. 18 minutes from time disaster as Dinei struck to put the hosts in front. 4 minutes later and our hope was restored as Dakson put us in front; try as we might though we couldn't find a way through and Corinthians became champions.

Flamengo 2-1 (3-1 on aggregate) Vasco (Copa Sudamericana Final 2nd Leg)

Just a couple of days after being denied the title by Vasco we got a degree of revenge by lifting the Copa Sudamericana. Bida put the visitors in front just before the break to level the tie. Jorginho Paulista put us back in front 7 minutes into the 2nd period and then winger Marcelo Carioca grabbed the winner on the day and sealed victory in the tie.

Flamengo win Copa Sudamericana

Review:

Mixed emotions this month; happy to have won the Copa Sudamericana our 3rd trophy of the year but frustrated as it should have been 4. To come so close to winning the title and yet fall at the last really hurts. To show how much better the 3 of us were this year since 2010 only Santos have got more than 82 points. 88 twice and 89 once so for all 3 of us to manage it in the same year is very harsh on us and Santos not to win it. In Switzerland news the Euro 2020 groups have been drawn and we will face France, Belgium and the Czech Republic.

2019 Season Review/2020 Season Preview

Review:

A good season overall 3 trophies and an improvement in the league. Not winning the title hurts but has made me more determined to win it this year. The Rio State title was pretty much a formality as was the Brazilian Cup. The Copa Sudamericana was a nice addition to the trophy cabinet but i'm happy that this year I can focus on the Copa Libertadores instead.

Board expectation: Qualify for Continental Competition

The aim has got to be to win the first divsion after what happened last year. In the Copa Libertadores I want to make at least the quarter finals. Not bothered by the Brazilian Cup and i will be putting out reserve teams in each round. In the Rio State I will treat it like I have this past year play the kids early and then when we make the semis and finals put out the 1st team to win it.

2020 Rio State Championship Opening Stage Round Up

Fluminese 4-4 Flamengo

Our season kicked off with a classic against relegated Fluminese. Vitor fired us in front and Diego Mauricio quickly made it 2 putting us well on the way to victory. 2 goals from Paulinho though got the hosts level at the break and a minute into the 2nd half Matheus Carvalho fired them in front. Manduca's strike saw us draw level and Mauricio's 2nd put us in front. Flavio though grabbed a point for the hosts 7 minutes from the end.

Flamengo 6-0 Madureira

Our 1st win of the season came in our first home game as we demolished Madureira. Diego Mauricio who else was the star bagging 5 goals - 4 of them before half time as we cruised to victory. Welinton slotted home our other goal from the spot.

Flamengo 9-0 Boavista (RJ)

We showed exactly what we are capable of with this destruction of Boavista. 7 up by half time thanks to a Marcelo Carioca goal a Diego Mauricio double and goals from Luizao, Jean Acosta, Diego Bairo and an Alex own goal. We eased off in the 2nd half although there was time for Carioca to get his 2nd and Mauricio to complete his hat trick.

Sao Cristovao (RJ) 0-2 Flamengo

3 wins in a row now thanks to a solid win on the road. Maranhao scored the opener before Diego Mauricio made it 11 goals in 4 games.

Flamengo 0-0 Americano

A young side took on Americano and battled to a goalless draw at the Maracana as our 1st team took a game off.

Olaria 0-2 Flamengo

Our first team returned to action and we returned to winning ways thanks to Vitor's brace.

Flamengo 4-1 Duque De Caxias

We completed our opening stage campaign with a thumping win over Duque De Caxias. Vitor scored the opener and his corner was then turned in by Welinto for number 2. Mauricio got 1 back before Welinton got his 2nd of the game. Diego Mauricio completed the victory late on.

Botafogo 0-1 Flamengo (Semi -FInal)

For the first time we put out our very strongest side and the result was progress to the opening stage final. Diego Mauricio grabbed the only goal after 27 minutes.

Flamengo 2-1 Fluminese

The opening stage came to a close the way it ended with a game against Fluminese. Victor Ferraz put through his own net to stick the visitors in front before Ceara repaid the favour at the other end. Sub Cadu then completed the win 10 minutes into the 2nd half.

Review:

We were expected to win; we did win. Not really much else to say; when we put out our strongest team we won both games. When we put out an almost full strength side we won convincingly when we played the reserves we were less convincing. I definitely think we are stronger this year; the players we have been able to bring in give us real depth. Cadu up front will help give Diego Mauricio a rest now nad then. Juninho at left back is an upgrade on what we had and Manduca who has returned from loan should more than replace the retired Maicon.

Our first away game in the Copa Libertadores ended in fantastic fashion as we demolished Libertad. Diego Mauricio hit 2 whilst Centre back Welinton grabbed a hat trick.

Sao Paulo 3-2 Flamengo (Copa Libertadores Group Stage)

Our hope of topping our group took a blow as we crashed to defeat against Sao Paulo. Rithely had given us the lead only for Guilherme Negueba and Willian to turn the game around in the first half. Guilherme then added a 3rd before Rodrigao's injury time consolation.

Flamengo win Rio State Championship

Colo Colo 1-6 Flamengo (Copa Libertadores Group Stage)

We finished off the Copa Libertadores group stage with an emphatic victory that saw us claim top spot in the group. Sao Paulo's 1-1 draw at Libertad meant we only had to avoid defeat to finish ahead of our fellow Brazilians. Diego Mauricio gave us the perfect start after 5 minutes and although Christopher Pineda equalised we were the better side throughout. Rithely's goal left us 2-1 up at the break and when Mauricio grabbed his 2nd in the first minute of the 2nd half it was game over. Jean Acosta added number 4 before Mauricio slammed home 5 & 6 from the spot in the final 3 minutes of the match.

Copa Libertadores Group Stage

Review:

We wrapped up the Rio State Championship as we were expected to and made it 5 titles in a row giving us 2 more now than rivals Fluminese. Our form in the Copa Libertadores though has been the real highlight winning 5 and losing just 1 of our games means we have now set up a match against Argentinos in the next round.

2020 May Round Up

Argentinos 1-1 Flamengo (Copa Libertadores 2nd Round 1st Leg)

We got a valuable away goal in the 1st leg but it could have been so much better. With the game looking like it would finish 0-0 there was a dramatic late finish in store. 6 minutes from time Jean Acosta fired us in front but with the victory looking certain Pablo Chavarria levelled just 3 minutes later to leave the tie on a knife edge.

Flamengo 1-1 (2-2 on aggregate) Argentinos (Copa Libertadores 2nd Round 2nd Leg)

Another dramatic game against Argentinos. after drawing the 1st leg thanks to 2 late goals we opened the scoring early this time around with Diego Mauricio bagging the opener in just the 2nd minute. We held onto that lead until the 55th when Adrian De Leon equalised. With neither side able to find a winner the game headed for extra time. In the extra 30 minutes though again their was no goal and so the game went to penalties. Argentinos missed the opening spot kick before the next 6 were all scored. Jean Acosta then had his kick saved; Argentinos had the chance to go in front but Felipe saved the spot kick. So up stepped Diego Mauricio to win it. He slotted it in and our players; fans and everyone else associated with the club celebrated we were in the Quarter finals.

Palmeiras 3-2 Flamengo

After our midweek exploits in the Copa Libertadores we were clearly tired and Palmeiras took full advantage. Jonathan put the hosts in front before Diego Mauricio equalised. Alex again put Palmeiras in the lead but again we came back and Welinton scored. Our team was really tired by this point and when Alex put the hosts in front for the 3rd time there would be no comeback.

Liga De Quito 0-1 Flamengo (Copa Libertadores Quarter Final 1st Leg)

A really good win away from home in Ecuador that gives us a great chance of progressing. Manduca's low drive on 37 minutes was the only goal of the game.

Flamengo 3-0 Cruzeiro

After losing our opening league game of the season it was important we got off to a winning start at home and that's exactly what we got with a very good performance. Vitor's 13th minute penalty put us on the right track and when Manduca doubled the lead after 71 we were almost home and dry. Diego Mauricio finished the game off with a minute to go.

Flamengo 0-0 (1-0 on aggregate) Liga De Quito (Copa Libertadores Quarter Final 2nd Leg)

This goalless draw was more than enough to see us progress. We are now into the semi finals where we will face Mexican side Cruz Azul and looking at the odds we are big favourites now to progress to my first Copa Libertadores final.

Flamengo 5-0 Figueirense

The scoreline of this game probably deserved to be closer as the bottom side battled and frustrated us really well for the 1st half. Rodrigo Rojas goal was the only thing we had to show for a 1st half we dominated. The visitors though stuck to their task well and it wasn't until Maddisom was sent off in the last minute before the break that we were suddenly able to run riot. In the 2nd half with them down to 10 men we took full advantage of the extra man as Cadu slotted home our 2nd goal. Jorginho Paulista then made it 3 before Maranhao and Marcelo Carioca also got themselves on the scoresheet.

Internacional 0-0 Flamengo

This ordinarily wouldn't have been a great result but when we had Diego bairo sent off in the 25th minute it looked as if the result would be worse. Some good defending and a couple of great saves from Felipe though earned us a point.

Review:

7 points from 4 games isn't a great start to the season but considering we have been playing at the weekend and midweek throughout this month the squad is getting streched and some of the players are having to be rotated. If we can stay in touch until the Copa Libertadores is done then I will be happy. Speaking of which our form in that competition has been very good and although the draw has been kind we have played well. We are favourites to progress against Cruz Azul and if we can do that then we have a Final to look forward to.

2020 June Round Up

Flamengo 3-1 Cruz Azul (Copa Libertadores Semi Final 1st Leg)

A good 1st leg victory sets us up perfectly for the 2nd leg. Marcelo Carioca gave us a 1st half advantage before Diego Mauricio doubled the lead 6 minutes after the break. Carioca then grabbed his 2nd of the match before Ezequiel Orozco gave the visitors hope ahead of the return match.

Flamengo 6-3 Sport Recife

A brilliant 2nd half display saw us come from behind to grab all 3 points in this match. Victor Ferraz's own goal and a strike from Allan put the visitors 2 up after 20 minutes. Renie nodded us back into the game before Padovani gave the visitors back their 2 goal advantage. Marcelo Carioca's goal in the 1st minute of the 2nd half set us off on the right foot. 17 minutes later Maranhao equalised and within 4 minutes we were in front thanks to Carioca. 5 minutes later and Carioca completed his hat trick; there was still time though for Maranhao to grab his 2nd and complete the victory.

Switzerland 3-2 Czech Republic (Euro 2020 Group Stage)

A last gasp winner from Pajtim Kasami sealed victory in our opening group game against the Czech's. Radim Postulka gave the Republic the lead before Xherdan Shaqiri fired in an equaliser. 8 minutes after his 1st Shaqiri got his 2nd to put us in front. Tomas Necid then equalised for the Czech's and looked to have given them a point before Kasami's late winner.

Cruz Azul 1-3 (2-6 on aggregate) Flamengo (Copa Libertadores Semi Final 2nd Leg)

We sealed our place in the Copa Libertadores final with a fantastic victory in Mexico. Diego Mauricio put us in front after 15 minutes and when Jean Acosta made it after 37 we were home and dry. Acosta added a 3rd 2 minutes after the break before Francisco Javier Ledesma fired in a consolation for the hosts. In the other semi final Sao Paulo overcame the odds and Santos to win 3-2 on aggregate and book their place in the final.

Belgium 2-3 Switzerland (Euro 2020 Group Stage)

Another late goal saw us make it 2 wins from 2 in the European Championships and book our place in the 2nd round. Eren Derdiyok twice put us in front but both goals were cancelled out by first Eden Hazard and then Steven Defour. With just 5 minutes left though Simon Mignolet turned a Xherdan Shaqiri cross into his own net to give us the win.

Gremio 2-5 Flamengo

A fantastic 1st half effort saw us claim all 3 points against Gremio. We were 4 up inside 32 minutes and cruising to victory. Rodrigo Rojas opened the scoring after just 2 minutes before goals from Vitor and Jean Acosta increased our lead as well as a 2nd from Rojas. Beto pulled 1 back for the hosts before Claudinho's own goal gave us a 5th. Reis had the final say for the hosts giving them a late consolation.

Switzerland 0-1 France (Euro 2020 Group Stage)

We slipped to our 1st defeat of the tournament in our final group game as Amara Coulibaly's solitary goal gave the French the win to leave them top of the group. In the 2nd round we will face Croatia.

Euro 2020 Group Stage

Sao Paulo 1-3 Flamengo (Copa Libertadores Final 1st Leg)

A brilliant victory over Sao Paulo puts us within touching distance of lifting the Copa Libertadores. Anderson Lessa put the hosts in front before Vitor equalised; 3 minutes after that Manduca put us in front and then in injury time Cadu scored what could be a crucial 3rd to give us a 2 goal advantage heading back to the Maracana.

Flamengo 4-4 Sao Paulo

Just 3 days after defeating Sao Paulo in the Copa Libertadores the 2 of us met again this time in a league encounter. Diego Mauricio's 1st half brace had seemingly put us in control but 3 goals in the space of 14 minutes in a devastating 2nd half spell saw the visitors go in front. Kenedy got the 1st before Anderson Lessa grabbed his 2nd goal in 2 games and then Willian scored the 3rd. Mauricio then though completed his hat trick as we drew level before Lessa scored again only to immediately see Mauricio score his 4th and earn us a point.

Switzerland 6-1 Croatia (Euro 2020 2nd Round)

We produced our best performance of the tournament so far as we destroyed Croatia. Wingers Valentin Stocker and Xherdan Shaqiri both scored in the opening 9 minutes to give us a 2 goal lead before Krunoslav Parlov pulled 1 back. Eren Derdiyok made it 3-1 at the break before heading in number 4 after 71 minutes. Pajtim Kasami then made it 5 before Stocker completed the rout by grabbing the 6th.

Flamengo 6-0 Santos (South American Recopa 1st Leg)

Santos decided to play a reserve team for some reason in this game obviously viewing this cup as unimportant and we took full advantage by drubbing them. Diego Mauricio hit a brace whilst Vitor, Renie and Welinton also got themselves on the scoresheet. The other goal came as Sidimar turned the ball into the back of his own net.

Switzerland 0-4 Spain (Euro 2020 Quarter Final)

We crashed out of Euro 2020 to the hosts at the Camp Nou as we were thoroughly put to the sword. Sergio Canales grabbed the opener before a brace from Paco Alacaer made sure of the win. There was still enough time though for Pedro to complete the rout by adding a 4th. Following this match I handed in my resignation and again walked away from international management.

Cortiba 0-4 Flamengo

Back in domestic action and I returned to Brazil to oversee the demolition of Cortiba. Diego Mauricio grabbed a brace whilst Marcelo Carioca and Rithely also got their names on the scoresheet.

Review:

A good month in the league; a great month in the cups. The Copa Libertadores is almost wrapped up and the Recopa is won unless we have a major disaster in the 2nd leg. In International action we did well to make it to the quarter finals but Spain were just to good for us.

2020 July Round Up

Flamengo 3-3 (6-4 on aggreagte)Sao Paulo (Copa Libertadores Final 2nd Leg)

We wrapped up the Copa Libertadores with a draw at the Maracana as we held off a fightback from Sao Paulo. After a goalless 1st 45 minutes the game came to life in the 1st minute of the 2nd period as Rodrigo Rojas grabbed the opener. Renan Oliveira got the visitors level on the night and then 4 minutes later Guilherme put them 1 goal away from making the tie level. Vitor got us level on the night 10 minutes from time but Jones goal 3 minutes later set up an exciting finish. Diego Mauricio though settled our nerves 4 minutes from the end as he made it 3-3.

Flamengo 2-0 Ipatinga

A 2 goal victory saw us move up a place in the table. Diego Bairo nodded us in front before Manduca slotted in number 2 from the spot.

Santos 0-3 (0-9 on aggregate) Flamengo (South American Recopa 2nd Leg)

Our 2nd crushing victory over Santos in a row as we cruised to victory. Misal's early red card put paid to any hope of a miracle the hosts may have had and we soon took advantage of the extra man through Manduca. Welinton headed in the 2nd and Rithely made it 3 soon after.

Guarani 1-1 Flamengo

A dissapointing draw against lowly Guarani as we dropped 2 points. Cadu put us in front after 23 minutes only for Tallys to level 12 minutes from the end.

Flamengo 2-1 Atletico Minero

We got back to winning ways as we came from behind to defeat Minero. Felipe's own goal was cancelled out just 2 minutes later by Vitor and Neri Cardozo then grabbed the winner for us.

Botafofo 1-2 Flamengo

A really good win for us at fellow high flyers Botafogo. Again though we had to win the hard way as Everton Sena had put the hosts in front. Vitor grabbed the equaliser before Diego Mauricio scored the winner 6 minutes from the end.

Review:

Really good month for us as we moved clear in 2nd place and kept the pressure on Santos above us. We also managed to wrap up the Copa Libertadores and the Recopa as we lifted 2 more cups. I was planning on taking a break from international management for a while; that was until the Wales job came available and that was something I could not turn down. After Rafa Benitez was appointed Spain boss I also got another job offer; from Villareal. I want to try and win the Brazilian League but the Villareal job is a good opportunity for me to return to Europe at a good team so I accepted the offer but will not take over until after the Brazilian season is over. Flamengo will receive £2m in compensation as I signed a 5 year deal worth £19,000 per week.

2020 August Round up

Flamengo 3-1 Corinthians

We wrapped up a comfortable victory over the champions to start the month off perfectly. Luizao's double including a penalty along with Welinton's header was more than enough. Osvaldo Bravo grabbed the consolation for the visitors.

Ceara 1-2 Flamengo

We maintained our winning streak with victory over Ceara. Diego Mauricio's 1st half brace put us in control and although Toninho got 1 back we held out to win.

Flamengo 3-1 Atletico Paranese

A Diego Bairo brace helped us seal another win as we saw off Paranese. Diego Mauricio added a 3rd before Rogerio Leichtweiz grabbed a consolation for the visitors.

Goias 1-1 Flamengo

A battling draw earned us a point at Goias. Gaston Rocha put the hosts in front before Marcelo Carioca's goal 13 minutes from the end saw us share the points.

Flamengo 5-2 Santos

A comeback against Santos saw us go to the top of the table. Adailton & Sidimar had put the visitors in front before a 2nd half fight back saw us claim the spolis. Diego Mauricio's brace saw us draw level before Welinton headed us in front. With Santos pushing forward we then caught them on the break as Vitor grabbed 2 goals of his own as we ran out comfortable victors in the end.

Flamengo 0-0 Vitoria

A dissapointing draw at home to Vitoria as we failed to find a way through despite creating by far the better chances.

Juventude 0-1 Flamengo

A solid win at Juventude kept us 3 points clear at the half way point of the season. Marcelo Carioca scored the only goal of the game after 9 minutes.

Flamengo 2-0 Palmeiras

A good win over Palmeiras; a tight game turned when Vitor Hugo was sent off for the visitors after 52 minutes. Within a month we were a goal up thanks to Neri Cardozo's strike. 10 minutes from time Manduca added the 2nd to seal the win.

Review:

A really good month with 5 wins and 2 draws from our 7 matches including a win over fellow title challengers Santos. 18 games to go and the title race is very much on.

2020 September & October Round Up

Cruzeiro 1-0 Flamengo

A dissapointing start to the month as we slipped to defeat against 3rd placed Cruzeiro. Anselmo grabbed the only goal of the game after 16 minutes.

Andorra 0-1 Wales (2022 World Cup Qualifying)

We got off to a winning start to my Wales career as we won an unconvincing match against lowly ranked Andorra. Centre back Owain Blake headed in the opener after 7 minutes and we looked to be heading for a comfortable victory. We were unable to add to our lead though and ended up winning by the solitary goal.

Figueirense 1-3 Flamengo

A late turnaround saw us come from behind to claim all 3 points. Felipinho opened the scoring after 6 minutes for the hosts before Caue equalised. Marcelo Carioca then grabbed 2 goals in the final 4 minutes to earn us all 3 points.

Flamengo 2-0 Internacional

A 2 goal victory over Internacional saw us grab all 3 points for the 2nd game in a row. Luizao put us in front with a 25 yarder after 9 minutes and Welinton's header doubled our advantage 14 minutes later.

Sport Recife 0-0 Flamengo

We missed an opportunity as we dropped 2 points against mid table side Sport Recife. A goalless draw as both sides failed to take any of the few chances that were created.

Sao Paulo 2-5 Flamengo

A fantastic victory for us against Sao Paulo that saw us return to the top of the table. Neguete had put the hosts in front before free scoring defender Welinton headed in the leveller. Cadu then put us in front before Marcelo Carioca doubled our advantage. Willian pulled 1 back for the hosts but we were 2 up again just 2 minutes later when Cadu grabbed his 2nd of the game. Carioca then made it 4 goals in 4 games as he crashed home his 2nd of the game and our 5th.

Flamengo 2-1 Gremio

We increased our unbeaten run to 5 games with victory over Gremio. Cadu nodded in the opener after 7 minutes before Rodrigo Rojas curled home number 2 before Ricardo deflected a cross into our net to give the visitors hope. We held on though for a well deserved victory.

Flamengo 1-0 Cortiba

A solitary goal 20 minutes from time from Cadu was enough to give us another win and keep the pressure on the chasing Santos.

Wales 1-1 Scotland (2022 World Cup Qualifying)

Our first home qualifier ended in dissapointment as we were held by Scotland at the Liberty Stadium. Aaron Ramsey's opener after 7 minutes got us off to a great start. We were looking good for the win until Steven Fletcher's goal later on in the 1st half denied us.

Ipatinga 1-3 Flamengo

4 league wins in a row now as we cruised to victory against Ipatinga. Luizao grabbed the opener to leave us 1 up at the break before 2nd half goals from Welinton and Marcelo Carioca wrapped up the win. Queiros consolation for the hosts was the only dissapointment in an otherwise good game.

Wales 2-0 Turkey

A really good win for us as we saw off the 2nd seeded Turks at the Millenium Stadium in front of over 60,000 fans. Ched Evans led the line superbly and 2 goals in 5 1st half minutes from the striker were more than enough to give us all 3 points.

Bolivar 0-3 Flamengo (Copa Sudamerican 1st Round 1st Leg)

A comfortable victory that saw us maintain our winning streak. Even more impressive was the fact we made 11 changes to the starting line up as we played a mixture of back up and youth players in order to keep our 1st team fresh for the league cmapign. All 3 goals came in the 2nd half as Vitor grabbed a brace and Neri Cardozo also got on the score sheet as we ran out easy winners.

Flamengo 2-0 Guarani

Our 1st team returned to action and the rest did them good as we got all 3 points. With Diego Mauricio and Cadu both out injured young striker Pituca took advantage of his 1st team opportunity by bagging the opener. Vitor came off the bench to make it 3 goals in 2 games as he sealed the win in the 2nd half.

Flamengo 2-1 (5-1 on aggregate) Bolivar

A young side ran out winners against Bolivian side Bolivar. Cadu returning from injury put us in front before Patricio Vidal equalised. Manduca then slotted home the winner on the night after 39 minutes and finished any hope the visitors may have had.

Atletico Minero 2-2 Flamengo

We avoided defeat thanks to a goal 4 minutes from the end from Manduca but we couldn't find a way to continue our winning streak. Marcelo Carioca gave us a 7th minute lead but a Bilinha equaliser sent us into the break level. Zeca then gave the hosts the lead 15 minutes from time only for Manduca's late strike to cancel that out.

Review:

A decent couple of months overalll; dissapointed to lose to Cruzeiro but I would have taken our points tally at the start of September if it had been offered to me so overall I can't complain. It is now pretty 2 much a 2 team race for the title and the final game of the season is Santos Vs Flamengo which is starting to look more and more likely that it will be a title decider. Good start with Wales as well as we picked up 7 points from our opening 3 games. Would have been nice to have beaten Andorra by more and we probably should have beaten Scotland but we have at least given ourselves a chance of qualifying.

2020 November Round Up

Corinthians 1-2 Flamengo

We downed the champions in their own backyard as we continued to push for the title and at the same time continued their miserable season. Mayson had put the champs in front before Rodrigo Rojas sent us into the break level. After the interval we dominated proceedings and Diego Mauricio's goal was 1 of many we should have had.

Velez 1-0 Flamengo (Copa Sudamericana Quarter Final 1st Leg)

Our young side lost in Argentina against Velez as Emilio Gomez scored the only goal of the game.

Flamengo 4-0 Goias

A comfortable victory as we showed resting the 1st team was well worth it. Luizao scored our opening goal after 9 minutes before Welinton headed in number 2. Vitor made it 3 19 minutes from the end before Diego Mauricio finished the scoring 4 minutes from time.

Flamengo 1-1 (1-2 on aggregate) Velez (Copa Sudamericana Quarter Final 2nd Leg)

A brave effort from our young side as we battled for a draw but ended up going out 2-1 overall. 18 year old defender Ricardo powered home a 1st half header to level up the tie. Unfortunately Rithely deflected a cross into our net 20 minutes from the end to deny us taking the game into extra time.

Flamengo 5-1 Ceara

A fantastic win to help us keep the pressure on Santos. Marcelo Carioca grabbed the opening goal of the game before Caue doubled the lead. Diego Mauricio made it 3 before Rodrigo Brasilia pulled 1 back. Jean Acosta then made it 4 before Carioca grabbed his 2nd of the game and our 5th.

Azerbaijan 1-1 Wales (International Friendly)

I decided to experiment in this game as I picked 26 uncapped players for the squad and gave some younger players a chance. Elmar Cavadov gave the hosts the lead after 71 minutes before defender Liam Jones nodded in the equaliser 5 minutes from the end.

Atletico Paranese 1-1 Flamengo

We dropped 2 points on the road as Rogerio Leichwertz grabbed an 89th minute equaliser for the hosts. That cancelled out Jean Acosta's 46th minute goal. It was not a terrible day though as Santos lost 2-1 at relegation threatened Juventude.

Vitoria 0-3 Flamengo

We won our game in hand to go top of the league by 1 point with 3 matches in the season left to go. Diego Mauricio gave us an 11th minute lead and when Vitor scored number 2 after 73 we were home and dry. 4 minutes from the end Diego's own goal put some extra gloss on the win.

Flamengo 3-0 Botafogo

With Santos having already won the pressure was on us to get a result and we didn't let our fans down as we produced a fantastic display. Diego Mauricio's opener put us on the right path and when Welinton turned in our 2nd the points were safe. Marcelo Carioca grabbed a 3rd for us late on as we cruised home.

Flamengo 4-0 Juventude

With Santos playing at the same time at 3rd placed Cruzeiro there was real excitement around the Maracana that we might end our 11 year wait for the Brazilian title. After just 14 minutes that excitement had turned to dissapointment as Santos raced out to a 2 goal lead. Marcelo Carioca slotted home a 25th minute penalty to give us the lead and give our fans something to cheer. 2 minutes later and it was 2 as Maikon Leite scored. Diego Mauricio then grabbed a brace as we relegated Juventude and made sure our last home game ended with a win. Knowing only a Cruzeiro win would give us the title we were given hope 10 minutes from time when they pulled 1 back but they were unable to complete the fightback and Santos held on.

Review:

A good month; we did pretty much all we could but it's now down to 1 game. I suspected it might come down to this a couple of months back and sure enough it is down to the final game of the season. Santos Vs Flamengo if we don't lose we are champions and having lost the title on the last game of last season I don't want to lose it again at the final hurdle. Looking ahead to Villarreal they currently sit 3rd in La Liga with 25 points from 13 games 6 points behind Barca and 5 behind Real Madrid.

2020 December & Season Review

Santos 0-0 Flamengo

A battling draw saw us claim our 7th title and end our 11 year wait for the title. With only 6 shots on target in the whole game defenses were well on top and despite some nervy moments we held out to win the league.

Season Review:

Couldn't have asked for a better season. We won the copa Libertadores and lifted the Brazilian title. As we won the Rio State title and the South American Recopa it meant we ended the year with an impressive haul of 4 trophies. There is no rest for me though as tommorrow I start work at Villarreal with an away game at Betis up first before my first home game agaisnt none other than the side currently top of La Liga - Barcelona.

2020/21 December & January Round Up

Real Betis 4-7 Villarreal

My first game in charge of Villarreal turned into an 11 goal belter. Franco Moreno's double put us 2 up after 17 minutes to give me the perfect start. Mohamed Yildrim got 1 back for the hosts after 19 minutes before Jan Kirchhoff nodded in our 3rd. Moreno then completed his hat trick before the break as we went in at half time in control. Emiliano Vivano's own goal gave Betis hope but that was quickly cancelled out by goals from Diego Bazan and Marco Ezio Fossati. Stanko Kozul then grabbed Betis 3rd of the game before Moreno got his 4th 6 minutes from time. There was still time though for Kozul to get his 2nd and reduce the deficit.

Villarreal 2-2 Barcelona

A battling draw saw us come from behind twice to get a point against top of the table Barcelona. My first home game in charge got off to a bad start just before the interval when Javier Henandez scored. Younousse Sankhare grabbed our 1st equaliser on 62 before Tony Mude looked to have scored the winner for the Catalans 9 minutes from time. Marco Ezio Fossati though rescued us a point 3 minutes from the end to send us into the winter break with 4 points from 2 games.

Getafe 1-1 Villarreal

My first act on business in the transfer window was to sign 18 year old winger Marcelo Carioca from my former side Flamengo for £10.25m. Carioca was extremely valuable for me over the past 2 years and has a great chance to become a world superstar. Biram Keyal grabbed the opener for the hosts before Carioca started to repay the faith and money I spent on him by bagging the equaliser.

Deportivo 1-0 Villarreal (Copa Del Rey 5th Round 1st Leg)

I put a reserve side out in this tie and lost thanks to a late Andres Guardado goal 5th minutes from time.

Cordoba 1-3 Villarreal

We restored the first team to the line up and the rest seemed to do our players good as we comfortably took apart Cordoba away from home. Sergi's brace sandwiched Omar Esparza's goal as we raced into a 3 goal lead. Keko pulled 1 back late on as the hosts got a consolation.

Villarreal 0-0 (0-1 on aggregate) Deportivo (Copa Del Rey 5th Round 2nd Leg)

Our first team again was rested as I looked to the league as our priority. Our reserve side was unable to find a way through the Deportivo defence though and the lower league side progressed at our expense.

Villarreal 2-1 Valladolid

The rest again served us well as we returned to league action with a win. Sergi headed the opener to put us a goal up at the interval and Marco Ezio Fossati's strike midway through the 2nd half made sure of all 3 points. The visitors did get a late consolation through Dejan Vujic but we held out for the win.

Real Sociedad 1-3 Villarreal

We extended our winning run in the league to 3 games with a victory over Sociedad. 2 goals in the opening 16 minutes through Sergi and Younousse Sankhare put us firmly in control. Sonny De Haas's deflected in a cross to give the home side belief but Sergi's 2nd goal in 2nd half injury time sealed the win.

Villarreal 1-0 Valencia

4 wins from 4 now thanks to a lone goal from Edgar Benitez and a couple of good same from emiliano Vivano.

Review:

A good couple of months for us overall. 17 points from our 7 league games keeps us still in contention although very much 3rd favourites behind Barcelona and Real Madrid; both of whom we have to play late on in the season. Getting knocked out of the cup is dissapointing but i'm not massively bothered and putting out a reserve side to rest the first teamers paid off as we won the 2 following games.

2021 February Round Up

Malaga 1-1 Villarreal

A reasonable start to the month as we get a decent point against a solid Malaga side. Martijn Vissers put the hosts in front before Giuliano grabbed the equaliser on 65 minutes.

Northern Ireland 1-2 Wales (Four Association Tournament)

We got our 4AT off to a winning start with a come from behind victory over the Northern Irish. Jonny Evans had nodded them in front before Aaron Ramsey equalised 2 minutes before the break. Then 2 minutes from the end David Edwards pounced to give us the win.

Villarreal 5-1 Hercules

Sergi was the hero as he bagged all 5 goals in this rout over lowly Hercules. 2 goals in the first 8 minutes set the tone and when he completed his hat trick on 24 their was no coming back. Fran Merida did get a goal for the visitors but 2 more Sergi goals in the 2nd half sealed our comfortablev victory.

Villarreal 3-0 Espanyol

Our 2nd comprehensive win in a row kept up our push to seal a Champions Legaue spot. We got off to another fast start as Sebastian Giovinco and Marcel Carioca both scored in the opening 6 minutes. Giovinco then added his 2nd and our 3rd 19 minutes from the end to put some extra gloss on the win.

Sevilla 2-0 Villarreal

A really bad way to end the month as we crashed to defeat in Seville. Marlaye Yattara scored the opener for the hosts 2 minutes before the interval to leave us a goal down. 7 minutes from the end Valentin Stocker a familiar face from my days in charge of the Swiss National team popped up to slot home number 2 and wrap up the 3 points.

Review:

7 points from 4 games is a decent return but it's not title winning form and the defeat to Sevilla our 1st for 13 games pretty much ends our title hopes. Real & Barca just aren't dropping that many points and it's hard to see us catching them now. The good news is though as long as we don't fall apart in the final 3rd of the season we should finish at least 4th. With Wales we picked up a good win over Northern Ireland and can now look forward to the Republic and Scotland games at the end of the season as we look to win the 4AT for the 1st time.
