União Desportiva de Leiria

União Desportiva de Leiria, commonly known as União de Leiria (pronounced [uniˈɐ̃w̃ dɨ lɐjˈɾiɐ]), is a Portuguese football club based in Leiria, central Portugal. Founded on 6 June 1966, it currently plays in Portugal's first division, holding home matches at the Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa, also known as O Lis. The club's biggest rivals in Portugal are S.C. Beira-Mar, Associação Naval 1º de Maio and Académica de Coimbra, which belong to the same geographical region.

A heavy contender in the battle to reach European competitions in the 2000s, it was however relegated in the 2007–08 season to the second division, after finishing last. Leiria would be immediately promoted back, coming in second after S.C. Olhanense. The Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa was built for UEFA Euro 2004 in 2003, hosting during the competition Croatia's matches against Switzerland (0–0) and France (2–2). It also received the 2006 Portuguese Supercup final between F.C. Porto and Vitória de Setúbal, as well as the following (Sporting Clube de Portugal 1–0 Porto). The architect who designed the stadium was Tomás Taveira, who also designed stadiums for Euro 2004 which include Beira Mar's Estádio Municipal de Aveiro and Sporting's Estádio José Alvalade. The grounds belong to the Municipality of Leiria. However, due to the club being unable to afford the prohibative ground rents for the stadium, they were forced to move 12km away to Estádio Mariniha Grande which is a dilapidated 6,000 capacity ground.

José Mourinho was club manager in 2001–02, his exploits there leading to his FC Porto move...

Transfer Window Review

1 September 2011

Well, I'm back at my spiritual FM11 home of Leiria. First off, as I said above, I junked my whole coaching staff, including my Ass Man. He was replaced by Adri Van Tiggelen. I then brought in a dedicated Fitness and Goalkeeping coach. However, the number of coaches I was allowed ended up being quite restricted, so I lobbied the board for more and was allowed two more. This was spent on another Fitness and Goalkeeping Coach meaning that every area had at least one coach dedicated to it. I also lobbied the board for an increase in the wage budget later in the pre-season as I had overspent quite badly. Finally, I requested a new feeder and parent club. I was given FC Martigues in the French National as a feeder and Girondins de Bordeaux in Ligue 1 as a parent club, replacing FC Porto. I also embarked on a gruelling series of friendly matches, playing 11 of them, in a bid to get my team accustomed to my formation, seen below

formation.jpg As you can see, it's not much of a departure from my FM11 4-4-1-1 (those who read my last thread), however, the left winger cuts inside and roams much like the AMC did.

RESULTS

We kicked off the Liga ZON Sagres against Pacos de Ferreira. And we conceded our first goal of the season after only 5 mins. A howitzer of a strike by the P.Ferreira midfielder from 30 yards put them 0-1 up and we were on the back foot early on. It took until two minutes before HT for us to get back on level terms. A wickedly swinging freekick came in and Manuel Cuerto bundled home to tie it up at 1-1. We then knocked at the door in the second half, but couldn't seem to break it down. Our next game was against Sporting CP and this was the result. Holy jumpin'! You can see the highlights at the end of the review. Our final game this month was against Rio Ave and we really suffered from the Sporting win as our overconfidence led us to go 0-1 down to a chipped free-kick and then a calamitous own goal. We got one back in the 75th minute from Lenny after going to 4-3-3, but it was all in vain as we lost 1-2. We finished August in 4th place.

TRANSFERS

The squad I had inherited wasn't that bad at all (unlike real-life!) so only minor tweaks were needed in the team. First off, DC Nelson Rivas came in on a free transfer. He was joined by ST's Krisztián Nemeth and Lenny, both extremely quick forwards. Also coming in on free's were DC Malkhaz Asatiani and finally talented Brazillian AMLC Pinga. Pinga would be vital in that AML role. Finally, I spent our £250k transfer budget on MR/AMLC/ST Olexandr Yakovenko from RSC Anderlecht. He would mainly play on the right, but be talented enough to fill in for Pinga. Finally, AMRLC Juan Iturbe came in on loan from FC Porto. However, Iturbe spent most of August away at the U-20 World Cup.

Outgoings were mainly free transfers, with only AMRC/ST Cáca's £725k departure to Al-Hittiad (KSA) bringing in any money.

Here is the Sporting rout in full.

Good luck with this Deisler

A fine victory over Sporting too. If I recollect correctly, didn't you wallop them in your FM11 save too?!

Thanks man! Yep, humped them 10-0 ;). No matter what FM, Sporting CP are still my b*tches!

Half-Season Review

1 February 2012

Well, we finished the transfer window in 9th place in the league. We've suffered terribly with injuries so far, with an average of around 4 out at any time, 9 at the worst point with 4 strikers out. After the early FC Porto game, we lost Olexandr Yakovenko for 3-4 months with a torn hamstring. Pinga then had to see a specialist about a hip injury and was out for 2 months. This came in the cup game against Fáfe. Along with that injury, Juan Iturbe suffered a broken arm and Chula to a dead leg. We did well to battle through as Robinho, marginalised by me at the beginning of the season, came up with some vital goals to keep us ticking over.

RESULTS

Liga ZON Sagres: We kicked off September with a tight 0-1 defeat to FC Porto. However, a monster 2-1 win over SL Benfica restored our confidence and we took that into a 5-3 win over Gil Vicente. A 4-1 win over Nacional de Madeira was quickly followed by two defeats in a row to early season suprise package Olhanense and Beira-Mar. This would form the basis of a wretched run of 1 win in 9 games. This consisted of 5 defeats (Olhanense, Beiria-Mar, Maritimo, Sporting CP and Braga), 3 draws (Academica, Feirense and Vít. Sétubal) and just the one win, a 3-0 win over Vit. Guimaraes. We finished off January with a tight 1-0 win over P.Ferreira.

Bwin Cup: Belenenses were brushed aside 6-1 on aggregate in the Second Phase. A 3-0 win away, courtesy of a Pinga hat-trick, was matched at home with a 3-1 win, courtesy of a Lenny hat-trick this time. Next up was the Third Phase Group Stage, where SL Benfica, P. Ferreira and Arouca of the Liga Orangina were my opponents. Benfica got their revenge for the 2-1 defeat earlier in the season with a 1-3 win. Robinho with the lone reply. Our next game was P. Ferreira, in the middle of our terrible run, and an 0-1 defeat sent us out of the competition. Our final game was a 2-0 stroll against Arouca, with Olexandr Yakovenko and Pinga the scorers.

Taca de Portugal: Our Third Round match was against Gil Vicente and goals from Malkhaz Asatiani and Lenny saw us through with a 2-1 win. Next up in the Fourth Round was Fáfe. A 4-0 win waa marred by THREE serious injuries and a sending off for Robinho. However, a brace from Malkhaz Asatiani and strikes from Nelson Rivas and Juan Iturbe saw us through. The Fifth Round matchup was against Maritimo and we failed miserably, going in at HT, 0-3 down. However, in the second half, we rolled up our sleeves and goals from Lenny and Olexandr Yakovenko gave the scoreline an illusion of respectiblity as we crashed out 2-3.

TRANSFERS

We were utterly strapped for cash in January, with only 16 year old left winger Massiliano Lombardi joining on a free and at the end of the window, I picked up 17 year old Felix (Umberto Dos Santos Carvalho) on a 12 month loan to buy from Genk.

Leaving in January was DC Edson to Vítoria for £500k. Edson came to me, moaning about a lack of first team football. However, my two first-choice CB's were firmly entrenched and I liked Edson as a back up, so I told him it was my decision. He was angry and pointed to an earlier arguement. I told him it was useless to bring it back up as it wouldn't help. He claimed then he felt like he couldn't work with me, so I agreed and transfer-listed him. I free-transferred ST Bruno Moraes as he was surplus and no-one would take him off my hands. Finally, I shipped Marcos Paulo off to Villarreal 'B' for a loan fee of £170k.

2011-12 Season Review

2011-12.jpg

RESULTS

Well, we finished 8th in Liga ZON Sagres as a very up-and-down campaign came to a close. We started February off with a run of 1 win in 5 games. Losses to FC Porto (0-3), SL Benfica (1-2), Nacional de Maderia (2-4) and Beira-Mar (1-2), sandwiching a 2-1 win over Gil Vicente, meant we slid down the table at an alarming rate. But we rebounded strongly to only lose one game (0-1 to Maritimo) between then and the end of the season! Wins against Olhanenese (3-0) and Feirense (3-2) started us off. The 3-0 demolition of Vit. Guimaraes meant that the manager lost his job in the morning. Then came the Maritimo defeat, but two wins finished off the season. A 2-0 win over Braga and a 3-0 win over Vít. Setúbal.

I got this in my inbox near the end of May which sucked.. However, Lenny bagged himself a nice award. Main job for next year is try to stop all these salaries crippling us really. It'll be hard, but it has to be done.

2011-12 Formation Stats

Transfer Window Review

1 September 2012

RESULTS

We kicked off the 2012-13 Liga ZON Sagres season with an away game at rivals Academica. A scrappy game, made worse for ourselves for the 22 players I brought in over the summer. And we were punished in the 42nd minute with a sloppy goal. Chances were many, but we just couldn't convert and lost 0-1. The fans were baying for blood after that defeat and a match against Sporting CP next was never going to help. However, we dug in and ground out a 0-0 draw, with a few good chances, but just no way to make it past the Sporting keeper. Final match of the window was against Pacos de Ferreira. New signing Nuno Gomes ghosted past his marker on the right and fired in a beautiful low cross that Olexandr Yakovenko clipped into the far corner on 14 mins. We were headed for a morale-boostig win when, on 87 mins, a mistake by the defence let in the Pacos striker who fired into the corner to tie it up. Worse was to come as on 90 mins, a bad mistake by Gévero Markiet allowed Pacos to score the winner and take the match 1-2.

TRANSFERS

Due to the debt level of the club (-£3m) and the wage budget (£2k over), I needed to dump salary, get in cheap players AND remain competitive. Ummmm. Coming in on free's were: DM Johnathan Buatu, AMR Maceo Beeldsnijder, AMC Johan Camps, AMR Ricardo Catarino, GK André Preto, DC Tiago Ferreira, GK Johannes Brinkies, DC Michele Rigione, MC Francesco Di Taccio, AMC Panaglotis Tachtsidis, DC Simone Benedetti, M/AMLC Mads Laudrup and ST Nuno Gomes. Most were youth players released from various top level clubs, however, I took a chance on the 36 year old Nuno Gomes, as we were dreadfully light up front.

Coming in for actual money were last season's loanee Félix for an agreed £500k from Genk and promising AMRL/ST Halit Bayrak for £250k from Dynamo Dresden. Both were purchased on 48mth deals. Also coming in were ST André Cardoso for £6k from Merelinese and ST Youri Moulder for £20k from Diegem. Coming in on loan, we had AMR Dani Abalo on loan from Celta Vigo and DR Loic Abenzoar from parent club Olympique Lyonnais.

Leaving us were DM Marcos Paulo (£800k, AS Nancy-Lorraine), AMRL/ST's Leó & (£275k each to Recreativo), MC Manuel Curto (£750k, NEC Nijmegen), AMR Churla (£550k, Las Palmas) and DM/MC Diogo Amado £275k, Belenesnes). ST Krisztían Németh was complaining about a lack of game time, so he was shipped out to Granada C.F for £1m. AMLC Pinga, the runner up in the Liga ZON Sagres Signing Of The Season, was the subject of a £1m bid from Palermo and I was in no position to turn it down. Finally, a monster bid from Bayer Levekusen for Malkhaz Asatiani in the region of £1.9m was received and this was also one could not turn down. All these sales brought us down to only -£500k and nearly £9k p/w under the wage budget, after a round of reducing contracts for the people in their final year.

Unlucky on the stadium expansion front, but it looks like you've done a good job reducing the debt and the wage budget. Given the amount of new players you have and the less than ideal start to the new season, what do you think your chances are of equaling or bettering last year?

I don't think there's any chance really. I've genuinely come into this season praying not to be sacked. I'll be happy with 11th or so really!

Half-Season Review

1 February 2013

RESULTS

Well, we finished the transfer window in 7th place in Liga ZON Sagres. Much less trouble on the injury front this season, although we did lose Olexandr Yakovenko to injury in the game against Braga until March and Tiago Terroso for three weeks in the game against Sporting CP. Performance-wise, Lenny hasn't lived up to his form last season and therefore has played kind of a bit part this season, making only 7 starts and 5 sub appearances. His lone goal coming in the Cup. I've therefore been rotating players to try to match his scintilating form from last season, but no-one has been particularly outstanding, with Yakovenko as the top scorer with 9. Mads Laudrup has been an absolute revelation at times on the left, at one point leading the league in assists and avg rating! However, Rúben Brigido has been whining about lack of game time and is extreming unhappy, yet can't be sold!

We opened September in Liga ZON Sagres with our first win of the season, a 2-1 win over Vit. Guimaraes. Next was a 3-1 win over Olhanense, where all three goals were firsts. From debutant Halit Bayrak netting to Mads Laudrup and Francesco Di Tacchio getting their firsts. A 2-0 win over Estoríl came next and we were making a break for it. A 1-0 win over struggling Feirense was followed by an ugly, ugly 0-3 defeat to Beira-Mar. We then proceded to see three 3-1 results in a row. Wins against Gil Vicente and Santa Clara were marred by a loss to FC Porto. Another loss, 2-1 this time, to Nacional de Madeira saw us hit 10th position. This was swiftly followed by two draws, an excellent 1-1 with SL Benfica and a not-so-excellent 2-2 with Maritimo. A cracking 2-0 victory over Braga, sealed with a wonder goal by centre-back Simone Bernedetti was followd by a gutsy 0-0 with Sporting CP

Bwin Cup We entered the cup at the Third Round Group Stage, along FC Porto, Olhanense and Feirense. We knew that we had to do well and get past Porto in order to progress in the competition and we started off well enough with a 3-0 thumping of Olhanense. Lenny popped up with his first goal of the season, Olexandr Yakovenko hit his last goal before injury and Francesco Di Tacchio sealed the win with a low drive. Next was the big one against FC Porto. And we never turned up in a lifeless, stale 0-3 defeat that will surely see us out of the competition with just one game left.

Taça de Portugal We treated this cup as a blooding ground for our youngsters. Our Third Round match against Padronese saw a number of youth team debutants, including AMR Maceo Beeldsnijder and AMC/ST Mehdi Kadi, along with DC Tiago Ferreira. And it was Ferreira who got the only goal of this game with a thumping header from a Brigido corner. In the Fourth Round, we faced Madalena. Through a mistake, I selected my first team and they responded with a 3-0 win. Tiago Terroso hit his first goal for the club along with strikes from Mads Laudrup and Olexandr Yakovenko. This win put us into the Fifth Round against Orangina side C.F Belenenses. There was a growing feeling of confidence amongst the players that we could go far in this competition, but after a fast start, we found ourselves denied time and time again by the keeper. Then, Simone Benedetti was extremely unlucky to concede a penalty in the 50th minute, as replays showed that the player had dived to earn it. Belenenses scored the spot kick and we went back on the offensive. However, it was all in vain as we pounded at the door, but couldn't break through and our run ended with a 0-1 defeat.

TRANSFERS

No-one was brought in during the transfer window, although Olympique Lyonnais sent us DM/MC Said Mehamha

Sales-wise, I sold GK Luiz Carlos to Osasuna for £700k plus 50% sell-on. This was purely to try to break into the black on our accounts which had sunk back to £1m in the red. Also leaving, this time on loan, were DM/MRC/AMC/ST Félix on loan to Gil Vicente for a £100k fee and want-away midfielder Panaglotis Tachtsidis to Valladolid for £200k. This put just £40k into the black for the first time in a year!

As a reward, have not one, but TWO replays!

Youth intake for the 2013-14 season has come in. There are only three that I'm keeping, based on Ass.Man & Youth Coach reports.

Fábio Mateus

Juan Carlos Vargas

Antonio Riberio

Mateus is being rated as a 5-star prospect by my Ass.Man so he'll be getting tutored up to the nines. The other two are 3.5 and 4 respectively.

Leiria U-19's 0 - 1 Leiria Yth Grads

..................................Soares 23

The game was to basically see if I'd missed anything and to see who was shining in my U-19 side. However, it didn't quite go to plan. Full back David Lopes from the youth team, picked up a booking after 3 mins. Then Vargas got wide on the right sending in a beautiful cross for Pedro Soares to head home beautifully. Both him and Miguel Branco were the standout surprises on the day, playing exceptionally well. Lopes received a second yellow card on 47 mins, which sealed his fate really. The U-19's were poor and wastful. But, with a number of players in the first team or out on loan, they didn't have the punch to battle through.

As a result of the game, contracts were offered to Branco and Soares for their excellent performances.

2012-13 Season Review

2012-13.jpg

RESULTS

Well, we finished 9th in this season's Liga ZON Sagres with an almost perfectly balanced record. We started February off with a disappointing 2-2 draw with rivals Academica after going 2-0 up in 10 mins. Next was a 0-0 draw with Pacos de Ferreira, then came a horrific collapse at the hands of Vít. Guimaraes as we again led 2-0 early on before going in at HT and, indeed, finishing the match, 2-3 down. A good, solid 2-0 win over Olhanense was followed by a 1-1 draw with Estoril and another 2-0 win, this time over Feirense. With 8 games to go, we were well-positioned for an assault on the European Qualification places when, suddenly, the bottom fell out of the team. We had a terrible 8 game winless streak. Back-to-back 0-2 defeats to Beira-Mar (who had scored 5 without reply now on us this season) and FC Porto set the tone. More was to come when main striker Lenny was out with a broken collar bone for 2 months, DC Simone Benedetti was out for 5 weeks wth a broken jaw and AMR Dani Abalo was out for the rest of the season with a lower back stress fracture. All this after the Porto game!!. A 1-1 draw against Santa Clara stemmed the tide, as did a 0-0 with Gil Vicente, but it was back to business as usual against Nacional de Madeira (1-3) and SL Benfica (0-2). A 0-0 draw in our penultimate game against Maritimo set us up for an excellent 3-0 romp over SC Braga in our final game to end a difficult second half of the season in fine style. Top scorer was Olexandr Yakovenko with 10 and most assists/Most M.O.M's/Highest avg rating was all Mads Laudrup

2011-12 Goals & Assists

2011-12 Formation Stats

Bwin Cup: We exited at the Third Round Group Stage again, only this time on goal difference of 1! We faced Feirense in the final group match and Lenny netted what was then his second of the season and Nelson Rivas finished off the game at 2-0. The news had filtered through that Porto had lost 0-1 to Olhanense and we were level at the top of the group, however, our 0-3 defeat meant that we had both scored 5 goals, but Porto had only conceded two and were therefore through. Gutting, but acceptable to go out to Porto.

Taça de Portugal: We lost in the Fifth Round again, a sickening 0-1 to CF Belenenses. They, themselves were knocked out in the next round by fellow Orangina side Naval. Naval THEN knocked out ZON Sagres side Gil Vicente, before getting beaten in the final by Sporting CP. So if I had beat Belenenses, we could have been playing in the Taça final!

Looks like you more or less equaled last season's results, which seems like a pretty good result based on the turnover before the start of the season.. Are we going to see the same kind of wholesale changes this season, or do you anticipate a bit less of a tumultuous summer?

Board were slightly unhappy that we were worse. Possibly due to the large winless run. I think you'll see a lot of sales going out and not much coming in as I am desperately trying to get into the black

Transfer Window Review

1 September 2013

RESULTS

Our 2013-14 Liga ZON Sagres season kicked off against Olhanense. And it only took 23 mins for us to make the breakthrough as Mads Laudrup skipped down the left wing and cut back a low cross to new signing Abdi Ibrahim. His sidefooted shot came back off the post and was inadvertantly knocked into his own net by a Olhanense defender. 1-0 up. They equalised on 33 mins when a deep inswinging corner outwitted everyone bar the Olhanense striker lurking at the back post. 1-1. We proceded to take control, but couldn't seem to make it count until the 78th minute, when Nelson Rivas proceeded to bullet home a header from a wickedly swerving corner. That was the last goal action of the game as we shut up shop and rode out a 2-1 win. Our final game that month was against Pacos de Ferreira. P.Ferreira took the lead in the 20th minute, at the start of an insane five mintue stretch. Neat interplay on the far left of the penalty area led to the P.Ferreira midfielder clipping the ball over the top of Brinkies in goal. 0-1. We then were reduced to 10 men as Dani saw red for a two-footed challenge on the striker and, finally, we went 0-2 down, thanks to horrifically slack marking at a free-kick and the player was gifted a free header. HT came and I was livid. I laid into the players and went for the most attacking that I could. And it paid off in the 78th minute as Olexandr Yakovenko slipped his marker, sprinted into the area and finished neatly into the corner. 1-2. However, the agony was increased two minutes before FT as the P.Ferreira midfielder lashed a cutback into the top corner of the net from outside the area to seal a 1-3 loss.

TRANSFERS

A number of free's came into the club as we'd AGAIN had our wage budget reduced, a full £9k from the original budget I'd started with back in 2011. So again, the plan was sell to survive and try to get some form of stability in with our bank balance and wage budget. Our free pickups were DL Igor Pita, AMRL Rui Cardoso, GK Luis Pinto, ML Iuri Medeiros, MC's Diego Lopes and Luis Cortez, DC Rui Bento, GK Robert Simic, experienced DM Dani, young Turkish starlet DC/DM/MC Emre Can after he was released by FC Bayern Munich and young English left back, Troy Walker. I also paid Man City £625k over 48 mths for MC Abdi Ibrahim and Portugesa in Brazil, £275k for striker Lucas Gaúcho.

Leaving were AMC Rúben Brigido. The young starlet was a great talent, but his unwillingness to change his game to suit my formation really set us at odds. So when Serie A Novara came knocking with a £1.2m offer (+50% sell on neg), I took their arm off. Same with GK Eduardo Gottardi, he was snapped up by AS Bari for £1.4m. These two transfers totally wiped out our debt and were followed by a £625k deal for Gévero Marklet with VVV. Also leaving were disgruntled MC Panaglotis Tachtsidis for £275k + 50% sell on to Girona in Spain. ST Djaniny was packed off to CS Sedan-Ardennes for £525k and finally DM Marco Soares left for £375k for Pacos de Ferreira.

The inconsistent results is normal for the first save in a new game really, you just have to slowly figure out what works. It's frustrating but over a few seasons always gets better, and it's rewarding when you finally crack what was missing tactics-wise.

Just a tip, I'm not entirely sure your format is very good for reading, very long paragraphs. I understand it's easy to get carried away though.

Half-Season Review

1 February 2014

NEWS

We finished January in 10th place in Liga ZON Sagres. It's been a torrid season so far, nothing is working. I've shifted from formation to formation and we just can't seem to buy a win from anywhere. The turnover in players hasn't helped but, as the situation dictated, I needed to clear salary and try to reduce the overdraft. Other problems I've had were the fact that I sold a player on 1 September for, what I thought to be January, However he left on the 2nd, which left me with a gaping hole that I really struggled filling as my youth players were not up to the task of keeping us up to the board's target of a top half finish and the fact that Troy Walker was my best left-back, but wasn't actually trained at left-back. Lúcas Gaucho couldn't hit a bull in the arse with a bass fiddle in his first 6 months, struggling to hit the net in the league, although he was fine in the cup rounds. Lenny & Nelson Rivas were also bitching about the club underachieving. So, during January, we went back to a basic 4-4-2, with extra focus on defending our set-pieces. One of our new signings slotted right in with the formation and our form dramatically improved. Our cup form was our saviour really as we remained unbeaten in those all the way up to 1st Feb!

RESULTS

U.D Leiria 0 - 1 Feirense (Liga ZON Sagres)

A terrible result. Gaucho missed sitters left, right and centre and we again conceded from a set-piece.

U.D Leiria 2 - 1 Vít. Setúbal (Liga ZON Sagres)

A good win, as we came from 0-1 down to win 2-1 in the 91st minute thanks to Olexander Yakovenko's double.

U.D Leiria 0 - 2 Academica (Liga ZON Sagres)

The fans went ballistic after this derby defeat, as did I. Woeful

U.D Leiria 1 - 1 SC Braga (Liga ZON Sagres)

My best result of the season so far. Despite going down early on, Dani rammed in a 45+4 minute equaliser from the edge of the area

U.D Leiria 0 - 0 Vít. Guimarães (Liga ZON Sagres)

We fought hard, but with both Gaucho and Lenny misfiring, we were totally toothless up front.

U.D Leiria 2 - 1 Oliveirense (Taça de Portugal 3rd Round)

Olexandr Yakovenko underlined his importance to us with a double to send us through after going 0-1 down early on.

U.D Leiria 1 - 1 SC Beira-Mar (Liga ZON Sagres)

A tale of two corners. Simone Benedetti headed home on 10 mins, however Beira-Mar equalised through Dani's OG after chaos was caused by a corner on 47 mins

U.D Leiria 3 - 1 Rio Ave (Bwin Cup 2nd Round, Leg 1)

An own goal put us on our way, before goals from Emre Can and Mads Laudrup sealed the deal

U.D Leiria 0 - 1 Sporting CP (Liga ZON Sagres)

A decent performance, only undone late on as a long ball over the top caught us unawares.

U.D Leiria 1 - 1 Nacional de Madeira (Liga ZON Sagres)

Lúcas Gaucho netted his first goal for the club on 3 mins. However, they equalised after a neat move on 23 minutes.

U.D Leiria 4 - 1 Rio Ave (Bwin Cup 2nd Round, Leg 2)

Another own goal put us on our way, before a double fromDani and a goal from Nelson Rivas saw us cruise through 7-2 on aggregate

U.D Leiria 3 - 1 Vít. Guimarães (Taça de Portugal 4th Round)

A Lenny took us into ET, where goals from Mads Laudrup and Lúcas Gaucho in each half of ET saw us through.

U.D Leiria 0 - 1 SL Benfica (Liga ZON Sagres)

First of a run of defeats. We defended well, but nothing up front and class told.

U.D Leiria 5 - 1 Trofense (Taça de Portugal 5th Round)

We were rampant, led by a fantastic Lúcas Gaucho hat-trick, a Mads Laudrup goal and a first senior goal for youth prospect Joao Simoes.

U.D Leiria 1 - 2 Leixões (Liga ZON Sagres)

Lúcas Gaucho netted again, but only late on after we were 0-2 down.

U.D Leiria 1 - 2 Maritimo (Liga ZON Sagres)

Igor Pita was shown a straight red on 7 minutes, however Lúcas Gaucho hit his second in two games to put us up 1-0. However, we conceded two late on in the first half.

U.D Leiria 2 - 0 Santa Clara (Taça de Portugal 6th Round)

An own goal and a Lúcas Gaucho goal in each half saw us through.

U.D Leiria 2 - 0 Nacional de Madeira (Bwin Cup 3rd Round Group A)

Goals from Simone Benedetti and Lenny sealed our first win in the group stage.

U.D Leiria 0 - 4 FC Porto (Liga ZON Sagres)

Hammered. It's the only word for it.

U.D Leiria 2 - 1 Gil Vicente (Liga ZON Sagres)

Carlão netted his first for the club in this match and Tiago Terroso got the winner.

U.D Leiria 1 - 0 Naval (Bwin Cup 3rd Round Group A)

A 92nd minute winner from young winger Maceo Beeldsnijder kept up our 100% record.

U.D Leiria 1 - 1 Olhanense (Liga ZON Sagres)

Lúcas Gaucho netted the equaliser after great wing play by Laudrup.

U.D Leiria 0 - 0 Feirense (Taça de Portugal Semi Final, Leg 1)

An travesty of a 0-0 as we utterly pounded them, even more so as they went down to 10 men on 74 mins. Disappointing.

TRANSFERS

Incoming to the club was AML/ST Carlão on a Bosman from Fluminese. He had an excellent scoring record in Brazil and, playing with another Brazilian, I thought he'd bring the best out of Lúcas Gaucho. Also coming in was free agent D/WBR Mark Currie to solve the dreadful gap made by Ivo Pinto's departure.

No-one left the club in January, however DR/L Ivo Pinto departed on 2nd Sept for £1.6m to Almería, which crippled us in the right back/centre-back department as, we were weak in the DR position and if I moved Nelson Rivas to cover, I only had a 5' 9" DC to cover the middle.

Quite inconsistent in the league but very good cup run. Surely getting into the final by winning away at Feirense shouldn't be a huge problem?

Not bad in the league cup neither, who's the other team in the group? Usually it's very hard getting out of the league cup groups unless you've finished in the top 4 in the league, because the top 4 in the league are seeded and get automatic qualification for the groups!
