Cheers for the comments lads

MacDonald has the upper hand over Barker so far, can Harry turn this around in the second half of the season?

Hunt and Adicell are both playing a lot, who will make the most appearances?

Will Small get another shot in the first team - and not screw it up? ;)

ADP has decent stats, and as he's San Marinese, is a call-up imminent?

Adicell is worth 375k, will anyone else get close to this when more professional contracts are signed?

How many more sub appearances will Member make? Will he be allowed to start again, and it he does, was his first goal the start of a spectacular streak?

That's as good an argument as any, plus Barker is a year younger than MacDonald. At any rate, they both seem to be playing more than the other u18 keeper, so that's a positive sign.

Member can now go on loan to Dundee United, still fancy the move Frazza or want to stay in u18s? MacDonald and Adicell are the other players who are 17 and so can go on loan if required.

If there are anymore screenshots anyone wants feel free to ask and I'll include them tomorrow before I start on the next update.

Edit - I love the addition of editing, helps fix up a lot of mongy spelling. :D

JANUARY 2008 UPDATE

FIRST TEAM

Alexandre Pato would be late arriving in London due to the first three weeks of the year being used for Olympics qualifying games, so this give the Arsenal strike force time to show why they shouldn’t lose their first team spots to him. However, in the opening game of the year against Hull, neither Henry nor Baptista looked close to troubling the keeper. Baptista played well enough to set up the only goal of the game for Ljungberg, but Henry was anonymous.

Things could have gone badly against Huddersfield in the FA Cup, especially when they took the lead ten minutes in from a free-kick. Baptista showed his class though, beating two men before slotting home a nice finish to equalise soon after. He then scored another, a belter from 30 yards out, Adebayor scored a penalty, and Reyes and Bilyaletdinov also got on the score sheet for a comfortable 5-1 win.

Baptista’s goalscoring run continued in the next game against Portsmouth, scoring a header early on from Reyes’ corner. This was quickly added to by Adebayor, but their hard work was undone by some poor defending which allowed Belluschi to net twice for a final score of 2-2. The first half against Sheffield United saw Paddy Kenny’s goal being bombarded, but as has been the case for much of the last two months, Arsenal just couldn’t score. Fortunately, just after half-time Walcott was hacked down in the box, and Adebayor stepped up and put the penalty down the middle past Kenny’s dive to put Arsenal one up. Reyes then scored a free-kick to make it two, but the common defensive collapse then occurred, Stead and Ciurlizza levelling it up. Pablo then got himself sent off for a deliberate elbow, leaving Arsenal down to ten men for the last twenty minutes. The team was shuffled around a bit, and Chris Small was brought on in the centre of defence, in a more high pressure situation than was hoped for. He performed well though, making a clearance of the line just a few minutes after entering the fray, and won some good headers to keep the Sheffield strikers quiet. The match ended 2-2, and Pablo’s wage will be reduced by two weeks’ worth this month.

The Reading game started very well, a Clichy free-kick somehow found its way past everyone and it was met by an unmarked Bilyaletdinov at the backpost to take the lead. Just a few minutes later, some good work by Adebayor put Walcott in loads of space and he went round the keeper to make it 2-0. Lita got one back before Reading and Gunners fans were worried it could be a repeat of the last two games, but on the stroke of half-time Bilyaletdinov turned Murty inside out before striking his second of the day to ease their fears. Small made a late sub appearance to help run down the clock, but the game was long dead by then for the safe 3-1 win.

Alexandre Pato made it London on the 24th, having scored nine goals in six games to help Brazil qualify for the Olympics.

He sat out the next game though, a fourth round FA Cup tie against Coventry. And given Arsenal’s habit of struggling against teams in the lower leagues, this went well. A goal in the first minute from Baptista set them off, and although Jay Tabb equalised quickly after, an Adebayor penalty, Bilyaletdinov strike and Whittingham own goal made it 4-1 at half-time. Bilyaletdinov added another just after the break from a Reyes cross, to round off the scoring and earn the man of the match award. Chris Small played the last 25 minutes and did okay, though he wasn’t really tested at all. Before the next tie, Italian centre-back Guglielmo Stendardo arrived on loan from Lazio to help ease the lack of defensive options caused by Pineda leaving, Pablo’s suspensions, Toure’s international call-up, and Djourou’s injury.

Stendardo made his debut against Newcastle, and played well keeping Ameobi quiet. All of the play was in the Newcaslt ehalf, but Shay Given was in good form and let nothing past him. It looke dlike it would be a goalless first half, but on the brink of half-time a speculative effort from Duff took a big deflection off of Gallas and found it’s way past Bernabe to send Newcastle in leading at the break. A revitalised Arsenal went out for the second half, Pato joining them on the pitch in place of Baptista. And he made an immediate impact. Cassani’s long ball forward was nodded on by him, right into the path of Reyes who blasted it past Given to equalise. And near the end, Reyes stole the game for Arsenal, sending a stunning free-kick into the far corner.

RESULTS

Charlton 2 - 4 Arsenal

Middlesbrough 3 - 3 Arsenal (pens 2-0)

Arsenal 3 - 0 Aston Villa

There were only three Under 18 games this month, so not a huge amount of playing time was available. Harry Barker was in goal for the Charlton clash, and sadly he let in both shots that came his way. However, he was at no fault for either goal. For the first, a defender ignored his shout to leave the ball so Barker could claim the cross, and instead just managed to head the ball into his own net. The second was a free-kick into the top corner no keeper would have saved.

The cup game against Boro is one that both CSE Academy keepers will be glad they weren’t picked for, Szczesny letting in three goals as well as having to face a penalty shoot-out. ADP had a decent run out in the game, making some efficient passes but not really threatening much and was subbed after an hour. Adicell played very well on the left wing, creating two goals for his team-mates. The defenders weren’t so impressive though. Playing the day after his appearance for the first team, Chris Small was brought back down to earth, quite literally as he was out jumped to only win three out of 14 headers. Matthew Hunt’s performance wasn’t too bad, but he missed a penalty late on which would have sent the team through to the next round. And to his shame, he missed his spotkick in the shootout too.

MacDonald was very happy after the Villa game when he kept his first clean sheet of the season. In truth Villa were outclassed and he didn’t have much to do, but any shots or crosses that came near him he dealt with well. Adicell also played and did fairly well.

Under 18 League

Gold Member relocated to Scotland at the start of the month, to increase his football learning experience with Dundee United. He was immediately thrust into action for their reserves, being kept out of the first team by Fraizer Campbell, on loan from Manyoo. He played the full 90 minutes against Motherwell and looked decent, but against Dunfermline he struggled and was subbed after an hour. Both games were won 2-1.

ah damn it, more bad games for me

You did well for the first team though, was just the Under 18 game which went badly. A funny point about that is that somehow it was played at the same time as a first team match, not sure what the AI was playing at there, forcing you into being two places at once.

FEBRUARY 2008 UPDATE

FIRST TEAM

Unbeaten streaks were on the line, as Chelsea’s 14 games without loss came up against Arsenal’s eight. The first half with a high-paced affair, both teams having many chances, but Bernabe and Cech were up to everything that was thrown at them. Shevchenko did have the ball in the net twice, but both efforts were ruled out for offside. The second half was all Chelsea, and Gallas was performing exceptionally to keep Palacio quiet. Then the ball was cleared up field, Reyes sent a ball through into space and Pato, making his first start, ran onto it and cheekily chipped Cech to score his first goal for the club. Unfortunately, this wasn’t enough for the win though, late on Robben finding Lampard unmarked to score.

Pato scored again against Charlton. A free-kick into the area wasn’t dealt with, Sidwell hesitated with the ball at his feet and Pato nipped in to steal it and score an easy goal. Moments after the break he added to his tally, beating Fortune to a header after a big cross from Walcott. In the last few minutes of the game he created a goal too, firing a cross low across the box and all Bilyaletdinov had to do was stick out a leg to direct it in. The 3-1 win actually sent Arsenal to the top of the table for the first time this season, although just on goal difference, and three points behind them, Chelsea have four games in hand.

Everton looked like they could be a tough challenge, Andy Johnson evening the game up just minutes after Walcott put Arsenal in the lead. However, Henry cutting back for Fabregas to strike, and a Pato free-kick meant Arsenal went in at the break leading 3-1. Cassani made it four, hitting a hard shot from an Henry cutback, similar to Theo’s goal, and Henry got himself on the score sheet, a rare header from Reyes’ corner. Substitute Hleb scored Arsenal’s sixth and final goal, an awesome volley from Clichy’s free-kick.

The first knockout round of the UEFA Cup was this month, as Arsenal took on Steaua Bucharest. Pato’s great form continued, as he and Henry combined well together to each score a goal assisted by the other. Pato also won a penalty which Reyes scored from. Unfortunately, a late away goal was conceded to prevent the clean sheet.

In between the European ties was an FA Cup fifth round match away at Spurs. This was the first derby match between them since Tottenham got relegated last season. Back from the African Nations Toure replaced Stendardo at centre back, and Henry was out with a hamstring strain so Barazite made his return upfront. The game wasn’t as competitive as Spurs fans would have liked, and their defence looked lost without Ledley King, who joined Chelsea in January. Both Arsenal goals came down the left-hand side, first Pato setting up Fabregas, and then Barazite crossing for Pato. Salt was rubbed further into the wound in the second half, Gallas powering home a header form a Reyes free-kick to complete the 3-0 win. Toure fell awkwardly after a hard tackle though, and will be out for another month with an ankle injury.

The second leg against Steaua wasn’t a very exciting game, but it got the job done. The damage had already been done in the first leg, and a goalless draw without any dramas saw qualification for the next round. An away trip to 15th place Wigan was the last game of the month, and they put up a good fight. They held out 45 minutes, but deep into first half injury time, Filan could only palm Pato’s shot into the path of Adebayor who scored an easy tap-in. They kept fighting though, and by the 55th minute mark they were 2-1 up, Camara scoring from a McCulloch pass, and Baines hitting a screamer. Arsenal looked poor for a while, and were lucky not to concede another, but some substitutions rescued the game for them. Pato took a knock and had to be replaced by Baptista, and Hleb went off for Walcott. And immediately they combined, Walcott timing a pass perfectly to beat the offside trap for Baptista to score. Wigan must really hate injury time now, as they conceded the losing goal in the 93 rd minute. Baptista was again involved, beating two defenders before sliding the ball across the edge of the six yard box for Rosicky to run onto for another easy tap-in. It was a hard-fought 3-2 win, especially for Pato who suffered a broken nose, but the points were in the bag to remain top of the table.

Pato took the player of the month award for February, in all competitions scoring 6 goals and creating 6 more in 9 games. Bilyaletdinov came third. Fabregas was young player of the month, and the Arsenal boss was manager of the month.

Arsenal 3 - 1 Birmingham

Harry Barker’s first touch of the ball against Palace was picking the ball out of his net. A free-kick came in, and Lokando headed past his own keeper to immediately put his team on the back foot. However, helped by Matthew Hunt, playing in the centre of defence rather than the usual right back spot, the defence easily dealt with the Palace attack and they never came close to scoring for the rest of the game. The equalising goal came from Kieran Gibbs. Chris Small played the last twenty minutes of the game, forming a defensive partnership with Hunt and looked solid, winning all of his headers and tackles.

A whooping was handed out against Spurs, however the only outfield CSE Academy involvement was a late run-out for Chris Small, and his only touch of the ball was a successful pass. In goal Charlie MacDonald kept a clean sheet, but it was a very quiet game for him. Against Birmingham Hunt and Small both played the full game, and did well. Hunt’s passing was sloppy though, just over 50% finding their destination. on the left wing Rick Adicell had an all-action game, winning seven headers, earning his side 6 free-kicks, and set up a goal, crossing for James Dunne to score.

Under 18 League

Gold Member made another start for Dundee United Reserves in another 2-1, this time against St. Mirren. He didn’t have the greatest of game though, only makes 7 of his 16 passes and not winning a single header. Only one of his three shots was on target, though it did draw a good save. Dundee United Reserves are 5th in their league (out of 12).

MARCH 2008 UPDATE

FIRST TEAM

March started with a game that could prove very important to the standings at the top of the table, as Manyoo came to the Emirates. And at half-time they were beginning to wish they hadn‘t. The first came from a goalkeeping mistake, as van der Sar failed to control the ball properly after a backpass from Heinze. Pato shot in and took the ball from him, rolling it into the now unguarded goal. Rooney nearly pulled one back, his shot beat Bernabe and came crashing back off the post. Unfotunately for Manyoo, Gallas cleared the rebound all the way upfield to Adebayor, and while his shot was saved by van der Sar, the ball fell to Pato’s feet and he gratefully made it 2-0. And after 65 minutes, Pato got his hat-trick. Bernabe’s goal kick went to Clichy, who raced up the wing and dribbled past Neville, before putting in a swinging cross which eluded van der Sar’s grasp, and without breaking his stride Pato nodded it in. Straight afterwards he was subbed off for Henry to a standing ovation. Henry soon delighted the Emirates faithful further with a trademark sidefooted shot past the keeper’s dive, and it ended as a magnificent 4-0 victory.

Arsenal suffered an early blow in their second knockout round match against Ajax, when Gallas was sent off after 25 minutes for an innocuous push when jumping for a 50-50 ball. The Amsterdam side couldn’t capitalise on their man advantage though, and the only goal of the game went to Arsenal. Of course, it came from the boot of Alexandre Pato. In the 54th minute he received the ball in the centre circle, dribbled past four men before rounding Stekelnburg to score a fantastic goal. Adebayor scored late on, but it was ruled out due to a shove to a defender in the build up.

Again, an FA Cup tie was sandwiched between European matches, this time the quarter final match against Championship Preston. Pato was rested for this game, and in his place Henry scored a hat-trick. Bilyaletdinov added the only other goal of the game.

The away leg against Ajax was an exciting one, as the pace of the game was set with Bilyaletdinov scoring after 25 seconds. Ajax hit back quickly though, Arshavin hitting a good left footed shot, and he then created one for Babel to send Ajax in 2-1 up at the break, but 2-2 overall meant they were losing on the away goal rule. They came out very attacking for the second half, and this was their undoing. They sent too many players forward, and twice they were hit on the counter-attack. Pato has a great ability to be in the right place at the right time, and he scored twice at the far post, jumping on a rebound for the first and a slide rule pass for the second. Ajax’s defence collapsed at this point, and straight from their kick-off Baptista tackled Babel for the ball before striding through and hitting a powerful shot into the top corner. The rout was completed in the 88th minute, Pato grabbing the ball after Reyes was fouled in the area and completing his hat-trick from the spot, his second and the club’s third in three games. This was a great game for Arsenal fans, and the neutral observer, and arsenal march into the next round, 5-2 winners, 6-2 on aggregate. Matthew Hunt came on for the last few minutes of the game after Cassani took a knock, but didn’t get a chance to touch the ball.

After the excitement of the last game the Charlton match was a bit of a comedown, but a Theo Walcott goal was enough for the win. It was also good to see Ljungberg make a return from his injury. Blackburn were very stubborn at Ewood Park, and would have been gutted to lose the way they did. In the 90th minute a free-kick was given against them just outside the penalty area, it was quickly taken and chipped in to Reyes who scored. There were also suggestions he was offside, but Arsenal didn’t care. Aston Villa away was expected to be a tough game, but after Cesar Delgado scored for them early on they offered nothing else, and a goal from Baptista and two from Pato were enough to beat them 3-1.

This was followed by a dull and uninspiring performance against Middlesbrough, and the final score was a deserved 3-0 loss, the goals coming from Pogatetz and Figueroa (2).

The month kicked off with a very good result, a 3-0 win over Chelsea. Harry Barker kept only his second clean sheet in goal, making good saves from Michael Woods and Sergio Tejera. Matthew Hunt played okay again, though his passing still needs work. Rick Adicell had a good game, first beating a couple of men before passing to Uwezu who crossed for Murphy to score. While he didn’t get credited with the assist, he still played an integral part in the goal. He then scored a great goal later on, when Armendariz’s attacking free-kick was overhit, but Adicell was waiting at the far side of the box and smashed it back across goal into the far corner. The Chelsea fans were especially angry at Adicell’s performance though, as in their opinion he shouldn’t have been on the pitch after a hefty challenge after just three minutes which left Connor Clifford with a fractured arm.

There was no involvement from the CSE players in the Southampton thrashing.

The Dundee United reserve team only had one match this month, but Gold Member made the most of it. The midfield didn’t create too many chances for him, but the ones he did receive he made no mistakes from. Two shots, two goals. He had to go off with a thigh injury late on, but he shouldn’t miss any time from this.

APRIL 2008 UPDATE

FIRST TEAM

The first leg of the UEFA Cup quarter final against Barcelona was a close game, and was decided by just a single goal. Luckily for Gunners fans, it went to Arsenal. Adebyor broke through the defence and unselfishly passed to Henry who had the easy task of sweeping it home with his left foot. Back in London after missing the last game through a Brazilian call up, Pato and Baptista were on fire against Leeds. Both men scored twice, and Baptista forced Westlake into an own goal for a decisive 5-0 win.

The second leg at the Emirates against Barcelona had a carnival like atmosphere about it, and the travelling Catalan crowd went into hysterics when Iniesta scored early on to cancel out Arsenal’s first leg goal. Before the break they were silenced though, Baptista shooting low and hard across goal, the ball nestling in the far side just past Valdes’ desperate dive. Arsenal were now 2-1 up on aggregate, with both sides having one away goal. In the second half Barcelona through everything at Bernabe’s goal, but they just couldn’t score. The one shot that managed to get past him, Eto’o was gutted to see it come back off of the post and be cleared. Just to complete Barca’s misery, in the 90th minute Pato and Bilyaletdinov played a neat one-two and Pato shot past Valdes to make sure the game was won, and Arsenal advanced to the semi-finals.

The important games kept coming thick and fast, and next up was the FA Cup semi-final against Aston Villa. The performance was uninspired, and for much of the game Villa were leading due to a John Carew goal. Some late substitutes changed things around though, with Ljungberg first crossing for Henry to score, and then Hleb getting his name on the scoresheet. Unfortunately, just as the referee was raising the whistle to his lips, in the 94th minute Petrov scored to send the game into extra-time. This was pretty actionless, and the game went to penalties. Baptista and Rosicky missed their kicks, and the game was over, Villa wining 4-2 on penalties to stop Arsenal getting to Wembley.

There was troubling news for the manager before the next game against West Ham, as reports were surfacing that Arsenal were on the brink of being taken over. A transfer embargo had been enforced, and rumours were going round that he would be replaced by Mexican manager Hugo Sanchez. The match was a very disappointing one, as despite going behind early Arsenal fought back to a 2-1 lead with a goal from Henry and a Ferdinand own goal. The Hammers then reinforced their reputation as one of the scummiest clubs in England by forcing Walcott and Rosicky to go off with injuries, and capitalised on the disarray by grabbing a late equaliser. While Rosicky won’t miss any time, Theo will be out for three months.

The Liverpool game saw a third successive draw, as presumably the team had decided that after bottling the FA Cup, they were going to throw away any remaining chance they had of winning the league too. A goal after 25 seconds for Pato put Arsenal in an early lead, and an Henry goal and Hyppia own goal made it 3-0 at half-time. Horrific defending in the second half, from Bale in particular, allowed Liverpool goals from Gonzalez, Sissoko, and Agger to draw it back to 3-3 and grab a point.

A much better showing was needed for the UEFA Cup semi-final against PSV, and we got it. Early defensive mistakes gave Pato and Baptista chances to score, and they didn’t waste them. A Ljungberg cross gave Baptista a free header to score another in the second half for a comfortable 3-0 win. Arsenal scored three goals again against Bolton in the next game, an own goal, and strikes from Pato and Reyes. This wasn’t enough though, as the home team scored four goals. Arsenal have scored a lot this month, but also let in way too many. Pato was the young player of the month.

The month started with a dominant win over Fulham, and Adicell had a man of the match performance in this one. He scored a perfect ten, the main factor being his quality passing, including 9 key passes to set up countless attacks. The best of the bunch was a wonderful throughpass which took several defenders out of the game allowing Evina an easy route to goal to score from. Barker and Small also played their part in this game, Small coming on as an early sub and Barker playing the whole match. Together they helped keep a clean sheet, and Small made a number of interceptions and defensive headers. Adicell was the only player in the game against West Ham, and while his passing was good it didn’t amount to much and his performance was decent without really impressing much.

No one played in the Reading game, and this was a shame as it’s the match that won the side the Under 18 championship. Congratulations to everyone who played for the team throughout the season.

Matthew Hunt also became the first player to represent the CSE Academy in a competitive Reserves game, as he played in the 1-1 draw with Aston Villa. He stepped up to this level well, completing over half of his passes and headers and making a number of interceptions.

Under 18 League

Inverness 1 - 2 Dundee United

Dundee United 1 - 3 Aberdeen

Gold Member’s learning experience in Scotland continued going well as he netted in the victory against Inverness, sliding in at the far post to connect with a low cross. One point that could be made though is that he doesn’t have a very good percentage rate for completing passes or winning headers, and doesn’t offer much to the side other than goals. Which as a striker is obviously the main thing, but against stronger competition this could be a drawback. Member came on as an early sub against Aberdeen and played okay, and would have been disappointed with his strike partner Daly who wasted a great chance Member set up for him.

MAY 2008 UPDATE

FIRST TEAM

Despite it being enough to reach the UEFA Cup Final, the second leg of the semi-finals was a typical Arsenal performance when they are winning comfortably from a previous leg. Lazy and lacklustre. They were lucky to only lose 2-1, and indeed the only bright spot was Omar Esparza, a reserve Mexican left-back, making his debut in the second half and scoring a powerful header from a corner. Arsenal will need to play much better in the final.

How a team can have played so well for long spells of the season, have a new striker banging in a goal a game, yet still have performances so bad is a mystery. But Arsenal are managing it, stumbling into a 1-1 draw with Man City, with their goal of course coming from Pato. This result ruled out any chance, however small, they still had of winning the league, and now the UEFA Cup is the only trophy still available.

Third place in the table was guaranteed going into the final game of the season, and so all fit youngsters from the CSE Academy were included in the starting line-up. This only turned out to be Rick Adicell and Matthew Hunt due to injuries though. Hunt almost set up a goal within minutes of the game starting, but Adu’s header from his cross just went over. He also made a vital tackle in the first half to stop Agbonlahor from shooting. Adicell had a quiet game, but when he had the ball he was confident with it and didn’t look out of depth. The game ended 3-1 to Arsenal, two from Pato and one from Barazite. Esparza looked very good at left-back, setting up two of these goals.

After finishing third in the league, the final game of the season, and the final chance to win something was the UEFA Cup Final against Liverpool. The team sent out to do battle in Marseille was Bernabe, Cassani, Esparza, Toure, Gallas, Hleb, Reyes, Flamini, Bilyaletdinov, Pato, Henry. The opening 20 minutes were a cagey affair, neither team really getting the game under control, and it took something special to get things going. Bilyaletdinov received the ball 40 yards out, and just looked up, saw Reina had come off his line a bit. He strode forward a couple of yards before hitting a belter past him to the shock and amazement of the crowd, and the Gunners fans erupted in applause. Liverpool were shellshocked by this, and were slow to recover, allowing Arsenal to pounce once again. A free-kick was needlessly given away on the edge of the box, and Pato stepped up to put it in the top corner. Just before half-time another goal was scored, Baptista meeting Reyes’ cross, and at the break it was 3-0 to Arsenal, seemingly running away with it. But last month in the same situation the game had ended as a 3-3 draw between the two teams, nothing could be taken for granted.

But when Liverpool wasted two good chances soon after the restart, Alonso blasting over and Crouch’s header hitting the post, you sensed it wasn’t their day. Matthew Hunt and Rick Adicell came on with half an hour left, and not long after that Baptista made it four. There was no way Liverpool could come back from that, and when the final whistle blew Arsenal were ecstatic that they had won a trophy this year.

The new chairman decided to keep me on, result.

Going to Dundee United should be fine Frazza, probably the best place for Member at the moment as he did well there. Any other of the original batch of youngsters can also request loans now if they wish, whether to be offered out in general or to one of the affiliates. Only Dundee United are available immeidately, guessing the others will become available whenever their transfer windoews start up again.

Charlie MacDonald is now too old for the Under 18s and has been promoted to the Reserves for the new season.

Here is the second batch of youngsters to be promoted from the CSE Academy. There are some exotic nationalities this time around.
