Don't know how to feel about my save game at the moment

Recommended Posts

Right. I wonder how many times people have had this happen. I have played the games since CM 97/98 and this is a first for me. I started my game as manager of England and lost on pens in the Semi Final at Euro 2012. After the tournament I resigned and waited out on a decent job. With 10 league games of the 2013 season to go Newcastle offered me the job, however they were 19th and 3 points adrift and had a tough run in and I couldnt save them and we got relegated by a single point. I decided I wanted to rebuild Newcastle and stuck at the job and was given £22 Million to spend in the summer and my aim was to win the Championship. But I sold some decent players like Tiote and Santon to earn more money and ended up still having about £15 Million left in the transfer kitty when the transfer window slammed shut. I wanted to keep money back for when we were back in the big time instead of wasting the money on Championship quality players. Now fast forward to the middle of January 2014 and this is where my troubles start. We are only 10th in the league 5 points behind the top 6 and 10 points behind automatic promotion, but we are on 2 stupidly good cup runs. In the League Cup we beat a weaker Man U side in the 5th round and have just won the 1st Leg of the Semi Final away to Chelsea 1-0. We have also battered a only slightly weaker Man U side in the 3rd round of the FA Cup with 10 men aswell and have now got a dream tie away to Preston for the 4th round. The big problem I have now is I dont know how to react to whats going on. Would I be happy to win a cup but be in the Championship for another season? I do know though I would be delighted to win a Cup and get a playoff place. I just dont understand why we are so good in the cups. We seem to play twice as better in the cups and in the league we just struggled to a 0-0 draw at home to a 22nd place Watford!

But how have you all reacted in similar situations?

A very tough decision you have there. Do you have a big enough squad to rotate and try to challenge on both fronts? Can you afford to play another season in the CHampionship i.e are you making profit/loss monthly with the lower income? Do you mind spending another year is the big question really? Personally Id go for the cups and spend another year in the Championship, cup glory will still net you a bit of money and you can spend more time readying your team for the prem. :D

Sounds like your team gets complacent in the league as you are playing teams with a much smaller rep than yours. Try and stamp this out during team talks (assertive- "I expect a win") and pre-match press conferences.

I would be happy with the cup run and use the extra season to build your team.

Just like haz32 says but I would rather go for "No pressure" team talk, at least that's what works for me in the first couple of seasons when I'm playing against lower rep clubs. Later when you get player's respect I switch to "For the fans".

Well it just gets crazier. In the 2nd leg of the semi against Chelsea, who played a full strength side apart from Torres and Cavani who were injured we spanked them 4-2 and were 4-0 up with 85 mins to go! As chob said I'm really looking at playoffs as if we can sneak them then it is basically a cup competition we should be ok. With regards to teamtalks I have tried everything in the league and it just doesnt seem to be working. Hopefully things will pan out but as you can imagine after that 2nd leg I couldnt care less what happens in the league now. What will be will be!

You'd think that your cup run would be boosting team morale and therefore improving performances in the league.

I'd certainly prioritise the league but, seeing as you're already in the league cup final I'd just say go for it! Winning the cup will only endear you to the fans, especially as there's a chance you won't meet the board's season expectations.

I would say don't despair though! This sounds like a quality save.

What's your starting line-up?

I wouldn't wait until promotion to sign those Premiership level players, get them in now to help you get back there a.s.a.p. You should still have a high enough rep to attract decent players, otherwise another season in the Championship might see your rep drop and players won't want to join you.

Kenco as you will see from one of these screenshots of my player search screen. I cant attract anybody it is really bad. I just dont want to buy players who are only good enough for the Championship when long term I need Premiership quality. But there is some great youngsters I have coming through, Szrentic, Godoy and Dvorak. I have uploaded a photo showing their stats from League and then stats from the Cups and my recent fixture screen

Well we lost 2-0 to Arsenal in the final and never really turned up and Coloccini got sent off! But running up to the final it seemed our form flipped. We got 10pts from a possible 12 in the league but got thumped 4-1 away to Liverpool in the FA Cup. As things stand now if we win our game in hand we go 4pts behind automatic promotion. So gotta push on now and strive for 2nd

Its even better. Finished 10th 9pts off playoffs and now ive been sacked! Absolutely gutted really was looking forward to rebuilding and was confident with a couple of signing we would walk the league the next season!! Now time to get a new job

I think your bad luck may have rubbed off on me mate. Spent nearly £30million rebuilding my team to suit a new style of football when Barcelona come calling for me. Naturally I take the job even though last year they won every single trophy in the game.

I started by losing the Super Cup on away goals to Real Madrid, then went on a phenomenally bad league run and only just saved a Champion's League spot with 3 games left. Came 3rd behind Real Madrid and Malaga. To make matters worse I lost the European Super Cup final 4-1 to PSG, the Spanish Cup final 2-1 to Villarreal (of the second division) and only won the Club World Championship. Finally my last chance of redemption came against Man City in teh Champion's League final where we had shown some decent form. We lost 4-1 again and I was sacked the next day.

Meanwhile my old club Torrevieja had been gutted, losing: Pogba, Gourcuff, Alcacer, Vossen, Pernía, Himchinschi, Yaisen and Sarpong for about £25million in total. They managed to avoid relegation with 1 game to play although the future doesn't look too bright for them or me right now.

Should've spent the money on players to get you promoted and worried about next season when it comes! The problem with FM (and real football nowadays) is that there is too much focus on the here and now and chairmen are not prepared to give you a chance to build for the future.

Quite a real to life story you have there.

Its the whole reason why in real life many managers are not to bothered with the cups and dont seem as disappointed as they should be when a minor team knocks them out.

God as a Norwich City season ticket holder I go home and away for league and cup matches and Paul Lamberts attitude towards the cup was dam annoying! Paying all that money to go home and away and he fields a reserve side and we get embarressed in multiple cups against minor sides.

But he got results in the league and thats what was vital.

Reverse it and I can think of many teams where they have had an amazing cup run and even reached some finals despite not being one of the big boys yet there league form has suffered as a result.

Like people have said it sounds like you need to clamp down on the lads in the league and remind them of there jobs and importance of the league.

shame...

promotion is always the number one goal, a cup run and trophy is all good but the stability of the club (and your job) is much higher priority...

I would have not sold club stalwarts like Tiote , who would have driven your team up the leagues...

the issue would have been a load of fancy dans with big stats for 'important matches' etc...

Great that the game replicates this from real life though
