History and recent performance

Founded in 1887, HSV has never been relegated from any top-flight league in Germany and is the only team that has been ever-present in the Bundesliga since its foundation in 1963. Thus, Hamburg are currently playing their 50th consecutive Bundesliga season and celebrate their 125th anniversary.

The club has been formed through the union of SC Germania, Hamburger FC and FC Falke. While blue, white and black are the actual club colours, the team’s home kit usually uses red and white in honour of the Hanseatic City of Hamburg.

Horst Hrubesch and Felix Magath lifting the European Champion Clubs' Cup

HSV has been most successful in the 1970s and 80s. In this period they managed to win the DFB-Pokal (German Cup) twice and became Bundesliga champions in 1979, 1982 and 1983. They also have won the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1977 and the European Cup in 1983. Director of Football Günther Netzer and Managers Ernst Happel and Branko Zebec have been the masterminds behind the success back then; along with players such as aerial powerhouse and current German U23 manager Horst Hrubesch (96 goals in 159 games) as well as Bundesliga manager Felix Magath (306 club games). Englishman Kevin Keegan had a three year lasting spell at the club as well.

phpZ35VKgAM.jpg

The club went through ups and downs in terms of league finishes during the last decades; and while reaching the UEFA-Cup semi-finals twice in recent years, Hamburg has to be considered a mid-table club now, as they failed to qualify for the European cup competitions three times in a row.

Last season, Director of Football Frank Arnesen replaced failing manager Michael Oenning with Thorsten Fink midway through the season, who then managed to barely save the club from relegation. Avoiding relegation cannot be enough for a club like Hamburg, though. To get the club back on track and as the squad was completely lacking creativity in midfield, Frank Arnesen had to delve into the transfer market again…

Coming Home

vdv.png

The major transfer was obviously the comeback of Rafael van der Vaart. During his first spell at the club from 2005 to 2008 he soon became the crowd favourite, club captain and focal point of the team, contributing 48 goals and 32 assists in 113 games. It has also been the last time that Hamburg qualified to play Champions League football. Hence the whole city became ecstatic as the club confirmed the deal on the last day of the transfer window. But not only did van der Vaart lift the team’s attacking ability to a new level through his instant impact (one goal and four assists in his first four games), he also seemed to lift the pressure off the whole team through his sheer presence, which made all of his team mates play better immediately. So finally, being labeled as relegation candidates after the first few games of the season, Hamburg starts dreaming of European football again.

Squad Analysis

team2.jpg

Goalkeepers

adler5.jpg

15 - René Adler: Despite his shirt number, Adler is your obvious No.1. He was Germany’s first choice keeper before suffering a long-term injury and is probably stronger than ever, now that he is fully fit again. While he is probably not the best at coming for crosses, his shot stopping is world-class and at the age of 27 and with his level of natural fitness he will be your first choice for years to come.

1 - Jaroslav Drobny: He had a good last season but has to live with being a back-up now. His attributes are quite the opposite of Adler’s, thus he is still an interesting addition to the squad. I always find shot stopping far more important than aerial ability, though. That’s why Drobny has to be the second choice.

Defence

Westermann_Anweisung.jpg

Left Backs

6 - Dennis Aogo: He is probably not the best defender, but he is excellent at crossing and taking set-piece, which makes him a very useful squad player. His versatility adds to that, as he can play in central midfield as well, where his creativity and passing becomes very handy. His low determination is a major turn-off, though.

7 - Marcell Jansen: Probably better suited as a winger, you might want to use him as a defender instead, due to the full back positions being a bit short-staffed. While having some flaws in his defensive play, he is hard-working, strong and pacey and can put in quality crosses as well.

Right Backs

2 - Dennis Diekmeier: This young man is your only natural right back. While offering very little defensively, he is excellent at bursting forward at pace to put in crosses. Also, he is still young enough to fix some of his weaknesses through training.

Centre Backs

4 - Heiko Westermann ©: Your club captain is a physical beast and model professional (who once played a whole match with a torn hip muscle). He can play literally everywhere in defence, so you should definitely find a place for him in the first team.

20 - Paul Scharner: The ex-Austrian international joined the club on a free transfer and is a completely solid defender. As he is aging though, you might want to give the match experience to the younger players at the club. Scharner can also help out in midfield, which might be useful.

3 - Michael Mancienne: The only Englishman in the Bundesliga is a pretty reliable Centre Back, despite the fact that he will be outmuscled by powerful strikers. But heavy strength training should fix that. His quickness also qualifies him to play as a defensive full back, if needed.

24 - Slobodan Rajkovic: He is your most aggressive option in defence and another good player, despite not being the quickest off the mark. His low concentration makes him a little prone to costly mistakes as well. Due to his playing style and personality he is also likely to receive a good amount of cards. Given enough match practice, he could develop into a quality first team player.

5 - Jeffrey Bruma: He is on loan from Chelsea and will return there at the end of the season. I wouldn’t recommend to use him at the heart of the defence because of his low concentration, but he could help out as a right back or in central midfield.

Central Midfield

Jiracek_Badelj_5x4_Diashow.jpg

14 - Milan Badelj: This new signing from Dinamo Zagreb is a definite first team player. Either from deep or in a more advanced position, he will spray pinpoint passes all over the pitch. He would be flawless if he only were a bit stronger and more determined.

19 - Petr Jirácek: Thanks to Magath’s confusing transfer policy at Wolfsburg, Hamburg were able to sign this Czech international after some impressive performances during the European Championship. Used in a defensive role, he can be a good partner for Badelj. He is good at getting forward as well, just make sure he doesn’t have to do the fancy stuff.

8 - Tomás Rincón: Compensating a lack of tactical discipline through lionhearted play and total commitment, the Venezuelan vice-captain is definitely a more than useful option in midfield. He will collect some cards, though.

25 - Per Ciljan Skjelbred: Skjelbred’s versatility makes him a useful player while he probably won’t be more than a backup. As he is terrible at finishing he should only be used in a supporting role. In fact, he is probably the only decent option as a supporting winger on the right flank. Given his determination and work-rate, he will give it all and run his heart out if you give him a chance in the first team.

44 - Gojko Kacar: While able to play everywhere from Centre Back to Striker, Kacar never really made it in Hamburg (partially because of fitness issues) and probably won’t in the future due to the new arrivals occupying his positions in midfield. There are also better Centre Backs and strikers in the squad as well. He would probably best be used as a ball-winner given the license to burst into the box, but his low stamina will call for an early substitution. His versatility still makes him a very useful backup. Don’t try to use him as an Anchor Man, though, as he will try to get forward whenever possible, leaving a huge gap in front of the back four.

13 - Robert Tesche: Despite being a decent athlete, he just doesn’t have the quality to be a useful part of the squad.

Attack

attack1.jpg

Attacking Midfielders

23 - Rafael van der Vaart: The creative force and focal point of the attack. The Maestro. The player to build the team around. Whether in midfield or as a striker, you definitely want to use him. Ironically, he is probably the team’s best creator and finisher in one person, which is a bit of a dilemma. His rather low work rate and overall physical attributes call for the Trequartista role, in my opinion.

18 - Tolgay Arslan: This talented young guy is starting to become a regular first team player for Hamburg this season. He could be a decent backup for van der Vaart.

22 - Jacopo Sala: He is on a level similar to Arslan, so you might want to get one of them to gain first team experience on loan.

Hakan Calhanoglu: Another young prospect, currently on loan at Karlsruhe. He is already good at playing the killer ball and could become a useful player in the future.

Wingers

7 - Marcell Jansen: As mentioned before in the Left Back section, you might prefer to use him as an out-and-out winger. His crossing, off the ball movement as well as his finishing ability is what makes him a very useful player in attack.

11 - Ivo Ilicevic: While lacking mentally, he is great at dribbling through the opponent at pace and taking shots at goal. As he is able to play on both flanks, he is likely to get some games even if he might not make it into the first team.

21 - Maximilian Beister: Having returned from his loan spell at Düsseldorf, Maxi is a very talented home-grown player and can be used on either flank or as a poacher up front. This makes him very useful and you should really give him games to develop, as he is a potential fan favourite.

Centre Forwards

10 - Artjoms Rudnevs: The new signing from Lech Poznan, where he became top scorer of the Polish League. Lewandowski moved to Germany under similar conditions. His trademarks are his relentless pressing of the opposing defence as well as his powerful shots, trying to tunnel defenders and keepers.

40 - Heung-Min Son: Sonny can either be used as a poacher up front or as an Inside Forward on the flanks, just don’t use him in a supporting role due to his poor creativity, passing and crossing. You definitely want him to get enough matches, as he could develop into the best player at the club. We got a potential wonderkid here.

16 - Marcus Berg: Berg is a similar player to Rudnevs and while he is the better finisher, he is not as quick off the mark and less of a team player. Then again, if he receives the ball in the box, it is almost certain that he gets a shot on target.

Tactical Tinkering

formationsv2rewrite.png

The 4-2-3-1 comes closest to Hamburg’s current real life formation and line-up. The use of one winger and one inside forward should allow varied attacking play. Van der Vaart can roam around, feed the attackers and pop up in the box himself, while Badelj dictates the game from deep, supported by Jiracek or Rincón in defence. Weaknesses could be playing Rudnevs as a loan forward because of his weak link-up play as well as the Fullbacks, due to their substandard defensive abilities. In attack though, it is nice to have Aogo’s creativity on the side of the more defensive central midfielder and having Diekmeier on the right, ready to overlap the Inside Forward when he cuts in.

Of course you can play with central midfielders instead of denfensive ones or alter it to a 4-4-2 by using van der Vaart as the second striker and moving the wingers back. I’d suggest using Son as a poacher then and Beister, Skjelbred or Ilicevic on the right flank.

The 4-3-3 allows even more space for van der Vaart, who will act as a false nine, drawing defenders out and feeding the inside forwards. Or he will get in the box himself to use his great finishing ability. The midfield trio should offer defensive stability as well as a good triangle for possession play. You might want to play Jansen as a fullback now while using Aogo in a playmaking midfield role. His lack of physical presence could become a problem here though, so alternatively you might want to use Rudnevs up front as a lone DLF.

The 5-3-2 is a formation that has been working fine for me in my first save. Playing Jansen and Diekmeier as attacking wingbacks really gets the best out of their attacking abilities and even if you get tortured down the flanks you still have three centre backs in the box to deal with the danger.

Wheeling and Dealing

arnesenonphone.jpg

As you have zero money to spend, you will have to sell if you want to buy. Tesche might be the first on your unwanted list and could generate about £2M. You also might want to sell Skjelbred or Kacar as you have enough options in midfield even without them. Additionally, you might want to buy a more complete striker and sell Marcus Berg instead. Finally, as mentioned in the squad analysis, loaning out Arslan and/or Sala might be a wise move if you feel they wouldn’t get enough first team match experience otherwise.

Sell: Tesche, Skjelbred/Kacar, Berg

Loan: Arslan/Sala

On the incoming side of transfers, you might want to strengthen both fullback positions. Decent and affordable options could be Ivan Bandalovski or Giannis Maniatis on the right, as well as Manuel Pamic on the left. If you are looking for a more complete forward, then have a look at Celso Borges and Leonard Kweuke.

Also, Flamengo's Adryan and Elfsborg's Oskar Hiljemark are youngsters that could develop into real quality players in midfield and are available for rather cheap.

Sign: Manuel Pamic (LB), Ivan Bandalovski/Giannis Maniatis (RB), Adryan, Oskar Hiljemark (CM), Celso Borges/Leonard Kweuke (ST)

Awesome thread. Rafa :(

Interesting to see his attributes have been tinkered with yet again, presuming that was the Spurs researcher, who seems to tinker with them alot.

Thanks. While van der Vaart is still an excellent player in the game, I was especially disappointed by his teamwork and work rate. Since he joined Hamburg, he has constantly been among the top three in terms of kilometres run and is basically giving it all for the team. I guess this will be fixed in the winter update, though.

I managed HSV twice in FM12 - didn't do well in either game - HSV always seemed to struggle in FM12 and they are in my FM13 save. I was surprised that they sold Töre IRL - He looked a great player, certainly much better than Ilicevic, for example. Anyway, I would definitely sell players like Tesche, Berg, Skjelbred and Rajkovic.

Great thread

Thanks. I am looking forward to start a proper Hamburg save now.

How are Hambourg's finances in the game? On fm12 they were pretty rich, but in real life they have some financial difficulties.

Well, as you get zero money for transfers and the wage budget is used up as well, you will have to sell players before you can sign new ones. Just like in real life, actually. I don't think Hamburg is in financial trouble, it's just that the new chairman is pretty niggardly, which is not a bad thing considering the lack of money generated by European football.

I managed HSV twice in FM12 - didn't do well in either game

Give them another chance then  The additions of Badelj and van der Vaart really brought a lot more quality to the squad.

Season 2012/13: Update 1

Seven games into the season at the start of October, I felt like adding a quick update to this thread.

In pre-season I arranged some matches against local teams to get the players match fit and make them learn the tactic. I settled on the 4-3-3 mentioned in the opening post. Some players were on holiday until way into July because of the European Championship, which was a bit inconvenient.

Considering transfers, I sold Tesche for a ridiculously high fee of 3.7M to Stuttgart and Berg joined Leverkusen for 2.7M. In turn, I signed Celso Borges - mentioned in the opening post - for 1.7M from AIK. For winter, there is 2.3M left for transfers and 27.5K for wages.

Matches

DFB-Pokal First round

ASV Neumarkt 0 - 3 Hamburg

Adler – Jansen (Rudnevs), Westermann, Mancienne, Diekmeier – Jiracek, Aogo, Badelj (Skjelbred) – Son (Iliceveic), Beister – Sala

With van der Vaart and Borges out injured, I gave talented Sala the chance to prove himself. He did fairly well, contributing one assist and a lot of completed passes. Ilicevic got mad at me after the match, because I wasn’t happy with him looking complacent after coming on as a substitute.

Goals: Beister, Son, Rudnevs

Assists: Sala, Badelj, Skjelbred

Bundesliga

Düsseldorf 0 - 3 Hamburg

Adler – Aogo, Westermann, Mancienne, Diekmeier – Jiracek, Skjelbred, Badelj – Son, Beister – Sala

Jansen was out injured so Skjelbred came into the squad. Beister had another good match, scoring and assisting one each. Son scored his second goal as well, but had to come off injured (two weeks) later in the game. Westermann scored a header after a corner kick taken by Diekmeier.

Goals: Beister, Son, Westermann

Assists: Badelj, Beister, Diekmeier

Hamburg 0 - 0 Freiburg

Adler – Aogo, Westermann, Mancienne, Diekmeier – Jiracek, Skjelbred, Badelj – Ilicevic, Beister – Borges

This has been quite a difficult match, even though Freiburg’s Putsila got sent off after 50 minutes. Freiburg played a deep 4-4-1-1 with DMs and wide midfielders instead of wingers and we struggled to find a way through their defensive. Later on I brought on Kacar to penetrate the box from deep and used Ilicevic and Beister as wingers, trying to avoid the packed centre. This made things a little better, but time was running up on us way too early. Borges gave his debut but was unfortunately playing very nervously and thus unable to make an impact.

Schalke 2 - 0 Hamburg

Adler – Aogo, Westermann, Mancienne, Diekmeier – Jiracek, Skjelbred (Kacar), Badelj (Borges) – Jansen (Son), Beister – van der Vaart

We’ve just been poor. We had some good chances right after kick-off but after a goal by Huntelaar we were completely lost.

Hamburg 6 - 1 Nürnberg

Adler – Jansen (Rajkovic), Westermann, Mancienne, Diekmeier – Jiracek (Rincón), Aogo, Badelj – Son, Beister – van der Vaart (Borges)

Definitely the correct answer to last game’s defeat. Son has to be the man of the match, scoring twice from direct free-kicks and once on the half volley after a great long pass from Badelj. Nürnberg’s keeper had a terrible match, though, so the six goals don’t really mean a lot.

Goals: Son (3), Westermann (2), Chandler o.g.

Assists: Diekmeier, Badelj, Aogo (2)

Hamburg 2 - 1 Bayern

Adler – Jansen (Rajkovic), Westermann, Mancienne, Diekmeier – Rincón (Scharner), Aogo (Borges), Badelj – Son, Beister – van der Vaart

Winning against mighty Bayern definitely feels good. The first goal was scored by another collaboration of Beister and Son. After Beister has been played through by van der Vaart, he laid it across the defence to Son, who fired it in the net. Westermann scored another after a corner kick (I am using default corners by the way, apart from having two players back and Badelj lurking to collect clearances and keep possession). This got evened out after a fluke goal by Kroos, who crossed the ball from close to the halfway line right into the back of the net.

Goals: Son, Westermann

Assists: Beister, Diekmeier

Mainz 1 - 0 Hamburg

Adler – Jansen, Westermann, Mancienne, Diekmeier – Rincón (Jiracek), Aogo, Borges – Son (Rudnevs), Beister – van der Vaart (Skjelbred)

The first half was just terrible. Because of poor passing we failed to control the midfield. Later on I tried to exploit the flanks a bit more and the second half was much better. But unfortunately we failed to score.

Hamburg 3 - 3 Bremen

Adler – Jansen, Westermann, Mancienne (Scharner), Diekmeier – Rincón (Rudnevs), Skjelbred, Badelj – Son, Beister – van der Vaart

What a derby! We didn’t start the match too badly, but of course Elia had score against his former club; De Bruyne added another goal just one minute later and suddenly we were 2-0 down. The players didn’t give up completely, though. Getting one back, Son scored from the edge of the area after a decent passing move. Unfortunately, after a terribly bad header by Mancienne, Petersen made in 3-1 before half-time. I brought on Rudnevs and changed to an attacking 4-4-2. Bremen’s attacking play was actually nonexistent in the second half and we took over control. Son scored his second goal after dribbling through the defence inside the box and added his third in a similar fashion, scoring from a tight angle. Despite throwing everything forward, we were unable to keep the three points in Hamburg.

Goals: Son (3)

Assist: van der Vaart (2), Diekmeier

Top Scorers:

9 - Son Heung-Min

4 - Heiko Westermann

2 - Maxi Beister

1 – Artjoms Rudnevs

Most Assist:

4 - Milan Badelj

4 - Dennis Diekmeier

3 - Dennis Aogo

2 - Maxi Beister

2 - van der Vaart

Conclusions:

Jansen’s tackling is very useful in the left back position, but his stamina is letting him down, so we need a good back up for him.

Son and Beister are working nicely as inside forwards, while having the occasional game off. But this slight inconsistency can be forgiven considering their age.

The 4-3-3 is working well at times, but if the lone striker doesn’t get into the game it is doomed to falter and become a difficult match. I probably need to think of a backup plan for that. The 4-4-2 employed against Bremen might be something to have a further look at.

Having a look at the table, we are currently 7th, seven points behind current league leaders Stuttgart. Not to bad, but there's definitely room for improvement.

looking forward to another season with Hamburg, I was pissed to find out they sold Tore though (and my LFC failed to get him IRL too :'( )he was my best player last season....I'll be starting a new game here shortly, just need to get use to the game first and foremost

I'm glad to have you on board again. Keep us updated

Il have a go with Hamburg this year, expectations more realistic now and obviously can see vaarts a massive plus. Great guide again mate. Bundesliga such a great league.

Thank you. Bundesliga is indeed a very challenging yet fun league. Looking forward to your updates as well.

Now this is a bit embarrassing...

Update 2: The Sacking

Season 2012/13 - October

Wolfsburg 1 - 0 Hamburg

Adler - Jansen, Westermann, Scharner, Diekmeier (Mancienne) - Rincón, Skjelbred, Badelj (Borges) - Son, Ilicevic (Beister) - van der Vaart

Pretty square match actually, just once, Olic‘s pace was unstoppable after a long pass out of the Wolfsburg defense. It probably wasn’t the best time to give slower Scharner a chance instead of Mancienne as a centre back. On top of that, we had a clear goal wrongly flagged as off-side. A positive has been the performance of Jansen, who really flourished in his new role as a wingback on attacking duty.

Hamburg 5 - 2 Frankfurt

Adler - Jansen, Westermann, Scharner, Mancienne - Rincón (sent off 18‘), Skjelbred, Badelj - Son (Diekmeier), Beister (Rudnevs) - van der Vaart

What a game again. Van der Vaart scored in the first minute after a cross by Jansen, but Rincón managed to get sent off by collecting two yellow cards in just 18 minutes. Nevertheless, we were able to extend the lead by another van der Vaart goal. After half-time, Badelj made it 3-0 and we never looked like losing from then on. Unfortunately, Son had to come off injured (4 to 5 weeks).

Goals: van der Vaart (3), Badelj, Beister

Assists: Jansen (2)

DFB-Pokal Second round

Mainz 0 - 1 Hamburg

Adler - Jansen (Aogo), Westermann, Scharner, Mancienne - Jiracek, Skjelbred, Badelj (Borges) - Rudnevs (Diekmeier), Beister - van der Vaart

Mainz played a narrow diamond that I find rather easy to defend but really hard to break down. So we had to head into extra time with Mainz having zero shots on target, but we couldn’t find the net either. Fortunately, Beister scored a fluke goal which ought to be a cross for Diekmeier.

Goals: Beister

Stuttgart 1 - 0 Hamburg

Adler - Aogo (Rudnevs), Westermann, Scharner, Mancienne - Jiracek (Diekmeier), Skjelbred, Badelj - Jansen, Beister (Bruma) - van der Vaart

Poor performance against the league leaders but that could have been expected. Stuttgart’s confidence is sky-high.

As revealed in the title, I got sacked after the Stuttgart match, with the club dropping to 10th place in the league. Don't let that scare you off of starting a Hamburg save, though. I guess I'm just a poor manager . I will try out some different tactics and start a new save then, not giving up on trying to lead my beloved HSV to former glory.

Some more conclusions thus far:

- Using van der Vaart as a lone striker probably wasn't the wisest tactical move. I guess he is lacking the physical presence for that.

- Jansen as a left back in the wingback-attack role is a revelation. Constantly good to excellent performances since using him in that role.

- Skjelbred proved to be very useful in central midfield. His acceleration seems to help him make interception and his aggression gets him involved in a lot of tackles. Let alone his stamina and work-rate.

You got sacked after 10 league games!? That seems extremely harsh if you ask me...

I shall have an HSV save at some point in the next month or two. I don't even have FM13 yet, should have it come Tuesday night though. My mate is loves Hamburg so I know quite a bit about them through him. When I found out they signed Jiracek and Badelj I was pretty much made on starting a Hamburg save on FM13. Van der Vaart was the icing on the cake!

Mike I was wondering wth happened to Besic he served as my 4th choice CB, while he wasn't a world beater he served as a good 4th choice and was still young to where he improved cant find him in the game either, then I read on wiki he was practically kicked off for disciplinary reasons, and he was alleged to have been strangled by Fink according to the ever reliable Bosnian media

as for my transfers to give a summary I felt I needed to make changes and some drastic ones, Ricardo Gray was simply a freebie youngster to keep an eye on at the very least I should make a decent profit on him in a year or two, Danalache was some Romanian playing in China with some good stats (saw someone posted his name on another part of this forum), Sebastian Jung added much needed quality and depth to the FB position, Oskar Hijlmeark will serve as a good back-up deep lying playmaker very delighted to have him signed, Nolito added depth to the winger position which I felt was lacking, Hermann I am delighted to have signed despite him being a bit expensive I rate him very highly in real life and in the game, Adryan will serve as a back-up to VdV until hes ready to take over in a few seasons one of the best young players in the game and for dirt cheap too

As far as I know, he was seized by the collar by Fink because he wasn't following the instructions of the fitness coach and was looking uninterested. He plays in Hungary now, where ex HSV staff member Ricardo Moinz is the manager.

Glad to see you signing young German players like Jung and Herrmann. Nolito is looking good as well and Danalache (never heard of him) is exactly what I'm currently looking for: a strong and tall striker. I'm tempted to sign this guy as well, especially for the tiny fee. Hiljemark looks interesting too and of course Adryan is a great talent. So some good signings you did there. I might use some of them as an inspiration for my upcoming save

really struggling if I keep it up im going to get the sack in a month, have lost three to Dussledorf, Furth, and Leverkusen I have also blown a 3-0 lead to a 10 man Mainz, my home form has been great but away I stand no chance...my next two games are against a hot Stuggart side who are atop the league with Bayern, and then I got Kaiserslauten in the cup both are away with the team morale reaching low these two games will more or less break my season....Im not sure either but Drobny is much worse than least seasons game, I have had Adler injured for a month only fro him to come back and then get injured immediately in training, in the games Drobny has played hes getting an average rating of 6.5 I might seriously consider putting in Svenhaus..currently got around 9 points 5 above the relegation zone (Hannover are surprisingly their ), Defense bar Westermann has also been a big let down too whoever his partner is has failed, already looking at Douglas for the winter window, hopefully he doesnt sign an extension as he is one of the players you can sign on a free once the winter window opens up

really struggling with tactics, the 4-2-3-1 is the best bet with the current crop of players but its been very inconsistent, im looking around for tactics that people have gone to and it seems that people are beginning to use a 3-5-2/3-5-1-1 with 3 CB's and wing backs and with the current match engine it seems to be the best bet at some level of success :/

What are the board expectations?

European Qualification is the minimum.

I managed to get into December at least though Mike :D

So at least you did better than me

A 5-3-2 variant is excactly what I'm aiming for in my new save. 3 at the back, 2 attacking wingbacks, a midfield trio and two strikers. I think it fits the squad quite nicely as well.

since im not creative enough to make my own tactics plan on using Mr Hough's wing back tactic, and start up a new save.....instead of buying Jung as I did on my last save thinking of experimenting and using Sala as a RWB, his best role according to my staff is a "defensive winger" so maybe it works, plus as much as I rate Jung im not sure with the way money is atm if its smart to buy a player for his amount and have him ultimately split time with Diekmeier, thinking of just waiting it out till the winter to see how Sala performs their I imagine Jung will still have the same price range come winter time

Retraining Sala is something I thought about as well. His work rate comes in handy and could make up for some of his weak defensive skills. Definitely worth a try I think.

You should also make Bruma learn to play the wing back position. I'd imagine he'd work well there as a back up.

Just got the game and im going to give Hamburger SV a try this year. Something different rather than being Liverpool all the time.

Glad to hear you chose to start a game with Hamburg. I'm looking forward to read about how your save is going.

Just finishing my first season with them. Managed to end with a solid 5th place, which was what I was after anyway (as my team is nowhere near the quality demanded for the UCL).

Beware that it may seem that HSV don't have any debt but on July 1st you'll start paying around 2 million euros each month on loan repayment. This really weakens your finance, and you'll probably gonna have to make profits on transfers each window to avoid staying in the red (I'm currently losing around 5mi per month).

But what a great team to play with!

You've done well finishing 5th  What formation and line-up did you primarily use?

I got those listed in the club information part of the OP as well. Those loan repayments really are quite hefty. The only positive is that the major one only lasts until 2015.

Please let us know your transfer budget for the second season.

some freebies to take a look @ once December 31st/January 1st hit is Douglas and Bochetti both CB's...havent got that far yet but they have yet to sign extensions with Twente and Rubin....not much in attackers who are willing to come to you, the two best ones imo Llorente and Muriel of Udinese haven't really shown a interest in coming yet, if you can keep up good form until the new year then I can see maybe Muriel coming not so much Llorente.....Sanogo would be someone to look at for the future, hes always rated highly in these games you can sign him as a freebie from Auxurre? I think once the new year opens up...other than that I would simply look at sides who got relegated in some of the bigger named leagues their is usually a team who gets relegated and you think "how that happen" managed to build my defense in the second seasons through Montpeiller getting relegated, and then picked up the arguably best young CB in the game the next season when Saint Enteinne (sp?) got relegated and picked up Zouma for 2 million

This isnt some great advice just some things to look at since you are working on a tighter budget compared to most other saves in top leagues

concerning the loan repayments they did kinda screw me over this time around, in my first save I was given 100 percent of the transfer revenue so when I was selling off players I got the max, this time around they reduced it to 60 percent once july 1st hit it was weird, I managed to get more money this time around but spent somewhat less

as for my transfers here they are

Concerning my transfers see the image posted two posts above this....

I was approached by Drenthes agent who was offering him on a free transfer realizing that despite being a headcase (irl at least not sure how he is in FM so far no problems) he would serve as a great addition to my squad as the LWB as Jansen is injury prone, at the very least I can make a healthy profit on him in a year or two his value once he signed was near 6 million pounds (wages are around 20k per week)....Strandeberg is a good young CB, can play as a DM and a CM and has a good pass on him.....Danalache serves as a solid back-up and a stop gap until I can make further moves in a season to strengthen my attack....Hijlemark serves as another young piece and back up to Badelj as the teams deep playmaker.....Hochtrasser one of my scouts found and will serve as the perfect back-up in the ball winning midfield role, if any of you plan on signing him try and get him less for 500k that was my first offer and they accepted his value is set around 250k.....Adryan needs no explaining a wonderkid who will learn from VdV.....Rode is someone im excited about very much seems to be a beast of a midfielder great physical stats, and good mental stats, hes a bit expensive but I used Illicevic as a makeweight to lower the price, Illicevic who has good talent has always struggled with me seems to be a bit weak mentally imo, I wasnt able to get any side to put in a bid for him but I saw that Frankfurt were interested and used him in order to reduce the price around 5/6 million and put in the bid for Rode and havent regretted it since

funny story concerning Kacar who I sold on deadline day, when im bout to sell a player off I talk to them and request they terminate their contract so that they can become upset and be more open to a move as sometimes in the past they will reject the move because of their contract or they dont want to leave, etc. so when Atalanta put in a bid for him I talked to Kacar as he was on 20k+ wages and wanted to make sure he moved when I talked to him and asked to terminate his contract he accepted, LOL was kinda surprised by that I then rejected it and sold him off for 2.5m and agreed to pay 3k per week until his original contract ran out

Having an eye on players whose contracts are expiring can definitely be a great way to sign quality players and is something I really enjoyed doing on the previous game versions as well.

And Zouma is a beast

January comes and i managed to sign Demirci on a free from Besiktas and Ademilson for 6mil from Sao Paulo. Heung-Min Son got injured for 5 month :( currently 5th

So you're doing rather well. Shame about the long term injury, though. Might giving some information about your tactical approach?

Can anyone post a SS of Lam Zhi Gin please? :D Fellow Chinese would like to see how good this guy is.

thanks

I didn't mention him in the opening post because he won't play a part in the first team in the game. But still, here is you screenshot.

im playing a 4-3-2-1 with 2 inside forwards with Adryan(AP) Badelj(DLP) VDV(AP) all playing centrally. with Beister and Ilicevic both inside forwards with Ademilson/Sonny/Rudnevs upfront im currently lying 4th in March. I would upload screenshots but ive no idea how to do it :/

i had a mare of a second half of the season and finished 8th :/

So I started a new save and have just been hitting October.

Considering the transfers, I namely sold Tesche (3.8M - Hoffenheim), Berg (2.7M - Leverkusen) and Ivo Ilicevic (2M - Olympiacos Piraeus). Kacar is on loan at Lille. Interestingly, I just noticed that his value has risen to 8.5M.

On the other hand, I signed Andreas Cornelius (2M - Copenhagen), Oskar Hiljemark (1.1M - Elfsborg) and Adryan (875K - Flamengo), who I loaned out to St. Pauli.

Tactically, as mentioned earlier, I settled on a 5-3-2 with attacking wing backs. The midfield trio of Jiracek, Badelj and van der Vaart has been my first choice so far, with Cornelius and Son up front.

DFB Pokal First round

Reutlingen 0 - 3 Hamburg

Adler - Jansen (Aogo), Westermann, Scharner, Mancienne, Diekmeier - Jiracek, Badelj (Hiljemark), van der Vaart (Skjelbred) - Cornelius, Son

Goals: Diekmeier, Scharner, Jiracek

Assists: van der Vaart (3)

Bundesliga

Hamburg 0 - 1 Bayern

Adler - Jansen (Aogo), Westermann, Scharner, Mancienne, Diekmeier - Jiracek, Badelj (Cornelius), van der Vaart - Rudnevs (Skjelbred), Son

Bayern scored right after kick-off. We were doomed after that.

Stuttgart 0 - 0 Hamburg

Adler - Jansen (Aogo), Westermann, Scharner, Mancienne, Diekmeier - Jiracek, Badelj, van der Vaart (Hiljemark)- Cornelius, Son (Beister)

We were terrible at keeping possession but very good at forcing Stuttgart to shoot from distance. Fair draw after all.

Hamburg 3 - 0 Düsseldorf

Adler - Jansen (Aogo), Westermann, Scharner, Mancienne, Diekmeier - Jiracek, Badelj (Hiljemark), van der Vaart (Skjelbred) - Cornelius, Son

A match we were supposed to win and it’s nice to see both our young strikers scoring.

Goals: van der Vaart, Cornelius, Son

Assist: Diekmeier, van der Vaart, Aogo

Augsburg 0 - 2 Hamburg

Adler - Jansen (Aogo), Westermann, Scharner, Mancienne, Diekmeier - Jiracek (Hiljemark), Badelj, van der Vaart - Cornelius (Skjelbred), Son

This match has been harder than I hoped and we had to wait for a penalty to score the first goal.

Goals: Aogo, Son

Assists: Son, van der Vaart

Hamburg 3 - 0 Gladbach

Adler - Jansen (Aogo), Westermann, Rajkovic, Mancienne, Diekmeier - Jiracek (Rincón), Badelj, van der Vaart (Hiljemark) - Cornelius, Son

I gave Rajkovic a chance after he said he wanted to go on loan to develop and he did well.

Goals: Cornelius (2), Son

Assists: van der Vaart, Cornelius, Son

Bremen 1 - 0 Hamburg

Adler - Aogo (Rajkovic), Westermann, Scharner, Mancienne, Diekmeier - Jiracek (Rincón), Hiljemark (Badelj), van der Vaart - Cornelius, Son (Beister)

Bremen was dominating and deserved their win. It is a shame to lose those matches.

Hamburg 1 - 0 Nürnberg

Adler - Aogo, Westermann, Scharner, Mancienne (Rajkovic), Diekmeier - Jiracek (Rincón), Badelj (Hiljemark), van der Vaart (Rincón) - Cornelius, Son

Rather good performance. We should have scored more goals, though.

Goals: Cornelius

Assists: Badelj

So we are currently second in the league after seven games played. We have the best defense with two goals conceded, while we only scored nine goals. This is just what can be expected by a five-man defense, but the fans start to moan about the style of football being less than exciting. If we drop a few places, this could cost me the job again.

I would upload screenshots but ive no idea how to do it :/

I usually take screens by pressing print on the keaboard and then copying the taken picture into Paint. Then you can use the image button to upload them when posting.

i had a mare of a second half of the season and finished 8th :/

Finishing 8th means no European qualification, right? Interesting that you still got the job.

Too many foreign players never gave me the sense that the current HSV incarnation is too "German" and thats usually one of the things I look for when choosing a team.

How easy is it to sign the German players for the side or do you guys not mind the nationality/make-up of side?

not all that hard to sign Germans, I have managed to sign Rode, Jung, and Herman playing as HSV and all are great young german players...you arent going to be getting the likes of Gotze, and others, but there are plenty of German talent you are capable of getting, HSV though has not been successful recently is still one of the big named german clubs....Mike im sure will give you a more in depth answer as he follows the club
