Something you miss from previous editions of FM

Recommended Posts

One of my favourite ever editions of Football Manager is CM 01-02. I load it up occasionally and give it a play. While the newer editions of FM are also great, there is one thing that the older ones have that the newer ones don't. And that is the Inter-Toto Cup. As boring as the competition was in reality, I used to love playing through it on the game, as it meant I didn't have to arrange pre season friendlies, and I got the reward of a UEFA Cup spot at the end of it (assuming I could beat the likes of AIK of Sweden and Sturm Graz of Austria). Some of my favourite teams to play as were in the competition too. PSG who had Ronaldinho and Anelka, Newcastle who had Shearer and Bellamy, and Aston Villa who had Barry and Ehiogu.

Players don't seem to have personalities anymore. No big time charlies complaining about not being picked, storming out, not turning up to training. These things happen so rarely. I remember a player getting banned for 8 matches or something for pushing a referee in a previous FM game. Would love to see a story pop up in my news feed about Mario Balotelli rolling out of a casino at 6am on matchday. I know the reasons why these things can't happen in the game but I think it would add just a little realism to the game. Footballers are human beings and I think the player/manager personal relationship could be conveyed in the game a little better.

I also miss certain players, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo (fat one), Shearer, Beckham, Crespo.... while some of these guys are still playing I wish old father time hadn't caught up with them. Taking Shearer to United at the age of 32, delivering the great man a league winners medal and a champions league title. Crespo being a machine for my Barcelona side, Ronaldinho winding down his career at St James Park during an enjoyable Newcastle save I had. Great memories!

I miss Shevchenko. My best FM memory was an online game as Liverpool on FM 05, making a shock december transfer exchanging Gerrard for Shevchenko. My friend thought it was stupid, only he went on to be top scorer of the league despite only playing half a season. Led me to the title.

Perhaps SI could bring this back, but only for regens players. With regens you dont have any legal problems.

SI cant make Balotelli partying out untill 6 am, but can make a italian regen, that appear in the game at 2020! :)

an odd choice..

but i miss agents coming to me with their clients and showing me a 'video' of the player ... loved it

Except that the game was seemingly programmed to show you hat-tricks, so if a defender scored 3 headers from corners in one game, you got sent a video of it as evidence of his great defending

Going back a good few years to the Domark era, I miss the green videprinter scrolling in the results. I suppose it's a sign of the times, now you can see all the other scores during your own match, but there was something in the tension of waiting for one particular result to come up.
