A good month, with one obvious blip. We were fantastic against Elche, and I'd love to see our record against the bottom five this season - Olivari was in an unstoppable mood, adding a couple of piledrivers to a tap in and a penalty, with the other strikers getting the other three. We then produced NOTHING against Madrid, and handed them back the initiative after they grabbed two goals from corners and one on the break. In truth, we didn't deserve a point, so it's hard to complain. As ever, we had a bounceback game against Sevilla in which Olivari had found his form again and we were even able to rest some players in the second half. Valencia's late goal counted for little after each of the strikers grabbed a goal and an assist before Ponferradina endured a 7-0 thumping at home... Ouch. Even better was the news that Madrid had lost to Numancia to give us back the advantage. We'd drawn Liverpool for the first ever time in Europe, and a header from Aliotta put us in a great position ahead of the second leg.

Bar his no-show in the Bernabeu, Olivari has been class this month - as you'd expect from someone of his qualities.

March 2034 - FC Barcelona

Fixtures

A draw with Granada was not the way I had wanted to start the month - we were so much better than them, but an early long ranger was the difference until Hermann's late strike. We had chances after that, too, but 1-1 was the best we could do. Depor were on the receiving end before Liverpool were the first of the 8-0 drubbings this month as we made it into the last eight with ease. Valladolid didn't lie down in the next game, with a couple of volleys from Olivari and Flávio putting us up only for Spanish international Ara to peg us back. Thankfully, Olivari's run and finish secured the three points. Zaragoza were no match for us either, with the front three running riot and a couple of stunners from Kalan and Quinteros gave the Mallorca scoreline some sheen. The final match of the month produced the best result, with an awesome 3-1 win in Paris in which Adolfo and Dierickx rounded the keeper to show our class. A great score to bring back to the Nou Camp!

FC Barcelona - the La Masia graduates - March 2034 Intake

F.C.%20Barcelona%20Youth%20Candidates_%20Squad%20Players_zpsipvi5fgv.png

A good intake, this one, with a couple of players that have potential and in some useful positions. We've maxed out our facilities, have a class HoYD and are in a good catchment area - and it's starting to show.

F.C.%20Barcelona%20Youth%20Candidates_%20Squad%20Players-2_zps0noybu9p.png

Carmona is a shoe-in for a YP tag, with some classy stats and a shedload of potential. I'll be looking to raise a couple of things (Teamwork, Strength and Off the Ball) but otherwise he looks very good and our other LB (Tomeu Oliver - YP5) should be worried!

F.C.%20Barcelona%20Youth%20Candidates_%20Squad%20Players-8_zpshqynafab.png

Another winger I'll probably waste :(. Carmelo looks good although those mentals will never be stellar. Not sure about a tag, but he looks useful enough should I decide on a winged formation.

Barcelona_%20Transfers%20History-8_zps5ruzphrh.png

I originally didn't give Benjamín a tag but having signed him, his potential was raised and his attributes actually look really good. Hopefully we can get him some good tutoring soon and build on that.

Fixtures

This season's La Liga has been far more interesting for the neutral with us again squandering the lead in the league with a loss to Atletico after never getting going. The PSG tie looked done and dusted and indeed it was after Adolfo and co. tore through them. The little Spaniard was at it again as we got revenge on Betis for our defeat earlier in the season. Pedro's injury gave Kalan a chance, and he grabbed a couple of useful goals to give us another three points as Real again stumbled, this time against Granada. We then played Granada in the Champions League semi and a 1-2 loss wasn't the end of the world, although it was annoying to surrender the lead after Hermann's early free kick. We pumped them in the return leg though with an early Adolfo close range finish drawing us level before Flavio and Kalan made things look safer. Kalan was on a great scoring run and his early strikes saw off Numancia to put us on the brink of La Liga.

Liga%20BBVA_%20Overview%20Profile-17_zpsmnjdsak5.png

Oh yeah, our goal difference is +116 (131 for, 15 against). Silly.

Player of the Month

Our little livewire is unplayable when he's on form and he really tore some teams apart this month. What's most impressive has been his number of assists as well as the goals, and he's been one of the major reasons we are where we are.

Fixtures

After last month, all that was needed was two wins from two and we had potential banana skins away at Sociedad and Villarreal. Thankfully, all went well with Bastian Hermann slotting in from the edge of the area in the first half against Sociedad. After the break, two quick strikes from Dierickx and Adolfo would make the game safe. At Villarreal though, it was far tighter. It was the perfect start when Quinteros played a one-two with Dierickx to net after just 34 seconds, but the yellow submarine would equalise shortly after and had a few half chances. Aliotta's strike from 8 yards settled it in the end and I'm glad it was him - he'd been the one player to really stand up and be counted in the last few games and deserved the credit. A draw wouldn't have been enough either, as Real managed a 1-0 win at Elche. Still, with a goal difference of +120, you'd hope to win the league!

FC Barcelona's run to the final

Stade Rennais' run to the final

Stade%20Rennais%20FC_%20Fixtures%20Schedule_zpstehkmnrf.png

Odds: Barcelona 5-4 (Fav), Stade Rennais 7-4

It's the final re-appearance the world has been waiting for. Rennes have had a phenomenal competition, with Júnior and Briseno starring in their run to the final. They were everything we weren't in the group stages before making the world happy by dumping Real out of the competition. Winning 4-0 at Atletico is an excellent result, too, and they will be handy opponents. As for us, it really took until the knockout stages for us to get going, but when we do, we're the best side in the world by a long way. Depends which Barca side turns up, I guess...

Barcelona%20v%20Rennes_%20Preview%20Line%20Ups_zpse9ikhv1q.png

You know it's a slow start when the first highlight is of Júnior smashing a 40 yard shot miles wide after 13 minutes... 10 minutes after that, we had our first shot on target, with Adolfo racing at the backpedalling defence from the halfway line, forcing a low save from legendary keeper Beccaria. The keeper was called into action again 15 minutes later, palming away a powerful snapshot from Adolfo. It was a relatively even game, with Machado putting a shot from the edge of the area straight at Jiménez. We were struggling to move the ball quickly enough and with Rennes happy to sit back, we pulled the team back a bit, dropping a touch deeper. Rennes pressed again though, with Jiménez making another good save from Machado. Just on the stroke of half time, we lost Guaita through injury, so Gaspar Jiménez moved out to the RB role, with Bilbao coming on into the CB position.

We start again pretty well as a deep cross from Dierickx is nodded wide by Adolfo. It's far from a classic thus far, miles away from last year's epic against Real. Ten minutes into the half sees Juan Alberto (YP3) fire a rocket of a freekick which Jiménez does well to hold on to. We're having a lot of possession but not getting it forward quickly enough, with lots of players going forward whilst the ball is still with a full back, which Júnior exploits to run half the length of the pitch, smashing at Jiménez. We get our break with a soft penalty awarded for a foul on Adolfo after a silly sliding challenge right on the corner of the area. Dierickx steps up, and smashes into the top left corner. 1-0 Barcelona! It doesn't last long though as Rennes force a throw in off the restart. The cross from that floats over Bilbao, who hasn't talked to Jiménez, and both of them leave it for sub Kaliciak to nod home. 1-1! We go straight back to the attacking shouts and immediately we break upfield from the restart down the left; a neat interchange between Tomeu Oliver (YP5), Aliotta and Quinteros freeing the centre mid, who finds Dierickx. The Belgian draws the centre back over before slipping the ball inside to Adolfo, who slots into the far corner. 2-1 Barcelona! 5 minutes later and a floated cross is pushed over the top by Beccaria with the momentum firmly in our favour. Just three minutes left and a poor kick from keeper Jiménez finds Hajji, who works it in to Júnior, but one-on-one with the keeper, he can only skew his shot wide in his final game for Rennes before leaving for Barcelona... Conspiracy theorists will love it! One minute to go, and the up-till-now invisible Olivari pops up in the area to find a flick on from Adolfo, but only forces a save from Beccaria. Rennes clear it but there's not enough time! Júnior has his head in his hands as the final whistle goes and Barcelona had won the Champions League!!!

A decent draw and Portugal shouldn't be too much of a problem - definitely targeting first. The best nations are Brazil (who have it easy), Italy (with a very tough group) and Germany (who should do alright as well). The obvious absentees? England lost out to Norway on penalties in the playoffs after failing to overcome Slovenia in qualification... They don't deserve to be here.

Spain - World Cup 2034 (South Korea)

Cameroon were first up, and we were still going with the 4-4-2 diamond that had served us so well toward the end of qualification. We were all over them from the off, with Cissé's early header putting us in front. Adolfo slid home a neat finish just before half time and though we should have had more in the second half, we had to settle for 3 when Cissé powered home a shot from the edge of the box.

wc_jap_zpsykonnxf4.png

We made what was plain sailing after 24 minutes very difficult after 90. Both of Japan's goals came after the 80th minute, but our defence should be better. Adolfo played a blinder for the opening half hour then, in typical FM fashion, refused every possible chance to add to his hat-trick. Still a good performance and we qualify with a game to spare.

wc_por_zpscwtoejn3.png

As I thought it would, the Portugal match would decide top spot in the group, and they took the lead through a low Fausto Vicente shot after 7 minutes. We had the better of the game but couldn't break them down until a switch to the Barca tactic, coupled by sub Rubiato scoring a (harsh) penalty and forcing an own goal, pushed us into the lead. With Portugal chasing to avoid a clash with Brazil, we hit them on the counter, with Adolfo slipping a shot past the keeper after a clinical break.

FIFA%20World%20Cup_%20Overview%20Stages_zpsncyiekgv.png

So, instead of Brazil, it would be Greece, who held the Samba giants to a 1-1 draw in their group stage match. No real shock exits in the groups, with Argentina eventually losing out in the Group of Death to Russia and Italy thanks to Malov and co.

Greece were good! They held us at bay for the full 90 minutes with both sides going close - we had hit the post twice through Adolfo, and their CB had tried to revive the spirit of '04 by thumping a header against the bar. In the end, Rubiato's diving header after good work from Adolfo down the flank settled it, with their keeper probably feeling he should have done better. Too close...

wc_ned_zps1f1ziwa2.png

Ok, this was closer! Holland were the side I neglected to mention at the start as a danger - they were the holders and have an awesome midfield with one particularly good right winger. Their defence is fairly slow and the striker ageing, but they are definitely a threat. However, we started much the better and whilst we ceded possession, they couldn't stop us creating chances and Adolfo should have had another hat trick. As it was, he gave us the lead with a volley in the 50th minute, and we tried to hang on. Unfortunately, the right winger was giving Tomeu Oliver (YP5) a torrid time down that flank, and he cut in to slot home on 88 minutes. Tomeu was immediately subbed off and we went back to trying to win the game. The momentum was all with them though, and in the end, we did well to hang on for penalties. It didn't look good when Mur smashed his against the post (we only have 4 good penalty takers and I judged that Man of the Match Gaspar Jiménez - a CB with 5 for pens - might just have the confidence to make the 5th), and we were down until the third round when Jiménez pulled off a great save. Gaspar smashed his home to take it to sudden death, whereupon their LB hit the bar with their next attempt. Our other CB, Carlos Bilbao, had the chance to win it and put his straight down the centre to take us into the semi final.

wc_col_zps4tik3le4.png

We benefited from a couple of odd knockouts in this competition and Colombia putting France out was a major shock. The South Americans have absolutely nobody of note, so it wasn't a match I was worried about. This was as comfortable as the 1-0 as Greece had been cagey, and they never had a shot. In the end, Adolfo's knockdown was volleyed in by Juventus' Sergio Díaz (YP6) for the victory and a place in the final.

wc_aus_zps0qujfhh0.png

Australia?! The Soccerroos knocked out Germany of all teams in the semi final (Fejzic, Hermann et al.) and had also ruined Brazil's chances earlier in the competition. Fair to say they deserve to be here! We went 1-0 up pretty early on with Adolfo volleying in to secure the Golden Boot, but their striker who got both goals against the Germans showed why with a low finish from outside the box when little else seemed on. We traded chances and Adolfo should have added to his tally, but in the end, he turned provider, going one on one with the keeper and selflessly squaring for Sergio Díaz (YP6) to slot in off the post. Australia had nothing more and Spain were the World Champions!!!

To be perfectly honest, I really didn't see this one coming. We have a decent team, but with Pedro (YP2) out through injury and a couple of the better players the wrong side of thirty, we aren't close to the strongest side there - that being Brazil, Germany or Italy. However, we never had to face any of those sides thanks to the minnows raising their game (and a 34th minute red card for a Brazilian in the quarter final) and we beat everyone in front of us. Competitively (I holidayed a couple of friendlies) I have a 100% record with Spain over this qualifying campaign and the competition proper - I'll give it the Euros and then probably step down. It's a world away from the travails of Colombia and Argentina last time out!
