Bought game for Xmas but steam won't load

I've got the same, what a joke. And SI wonder why people pirate their games... maybe if you got rid of this crap they'd be more willing to buy it!

That's a very curious and ill-informed statement to make.

Especially considering Steam is one of the reasons many turn away from PC Piracy and back to legitimate sales.

Some nice introductory material to get you started - there's plenty more of that nearly everywhere on the web.

""Our goal is to create greater service value than pirates, and this has been successful enough for us that piracy is basically a non-issue for our company." - Gabe Newell

To paraphrase, basically this is "To beat piracy, you must offer a better service than the pirates" which is what Steam does. Take a look at the likes of iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, etc in the mp3 market to see what effect this mantra has on music sales.

Just because it's down on one day, granted a very busy day (which probably justifies the fact it's down), isn't a reason to criticise it. Tech Support staff are either enjoying their Christmas or are on the case as we speak.

Be patient, the service will be restored back to normal before you know it - in the meantime here's a video of cats with santa hats:
