Struggling to setup Schalke's central midfield + Huntelaar

Recommended Posts

Having started a game as Schalke (pretty random choice) i'm a bit stumped as to how to setup the central midfield positions, in particular Lewis Holtby.

This is how i have provisionally setup my team.

The two CM positions are the ones im having most trouble with.

I cant seem to find a role for either player that im 100% happy with given that they need to play roles that compliment each other and dont get in the way with Afellay further up.

Other players i have for these positions are...

I'm also not 100% sure on Huntelaars best role. He's got amazing technical attributes but he has no pace, no creativity and poor workrate, teamwork and passing so im just not sure how best to use im in this setup.

My alternate and slightly less adventurous setup is this.

Again, not quite sure how to arrange the central midfield or Huntelaar.

Any advice is welcome.

Thanks

How about Holtby DLP(d) and the 33 as CM(s) or BWM(s), or if you want to keep the CMs back then CM(d). And perhaps huntelaar as TM(a) with supply to feet.

I thought about Holtby on DLP-D but his defensive stats are pretty poor.

You need more than just the 2 DCs back. 4231 with 2 attacking wing-backs you really need the CMs to hold their position. In the set-up you posted you have 1 CM going forward and the other chasing opposition. Perhaps DLD(s) and CM(d)?

I also have a Schalke 04 game and i play 4-5-1 and my midfield in season 1 was the following:

Höger (DLP/s) ---------- Holtby (AP/A)

Moritz (DM/S)

Recently i've bought some nice players and now my midfield looks like the following:

Rudy (DLP/S) ---------- Holtby (AP/A)

Moritz (DM/S)

For Rudy his position i also have Denilson on loan from Arsenal and Rudy can also play as AP/A so he was a real nice addition to my squad. Bought him for €5.75M from Hoffenheim. To get Huntelaar to score goals i made him targetman and i play with two attacking wingers. In my game i've got Draxler (AML) and Risse (bought him - AMR) and as backup Barnetta and Beister.

In the first instance is try cmd for both centre mids keep them back for winning the ball and recycling possession

I'd play huntelaar as a poacher but mix his forward runs. Maybe afellay as a treq.

Second one id use the twin cmds again and have afellay dlps with forward rubs often. Can cause havoc.

Thing to remember is huntelaar will score if you give him the ball enough in or around the box. He will fashion his own goals

How did you setup the rest of your team? I'm struggling a little with my DCs stepping up with disastrous results (i.e leaving a gaping hole behind him to be exploited). I'm also finding it tough to get my fullbacks to defend properly. They seem to tuck in to form a really narrow back line and then struggle to contain the opposing winger.

I've also yet to decide on a style and strategy, currently im using Balanced/Control with a mixed passing style.
