So the season begins, can we improve on last year?

Rushden Away

Wrexham went into the game with a familiar 4-4-2 formation, and the team as quoted in the newspaper. Wrexham started the game poorly and Rushden capitalised through out the first half. It only took 4 minutes for veteran Andy Preece to open the scoring. Wrexham’s defence went missing and Preece latched on to a through ball and lashed home to send the home fans into delirium. On looking Tennant must have been bewildered, his sides passing were non existent, defence all over the place and the new signings looking worse than the players they had replaced. Another goal was inevitable and deputising Ingham was challenged by Parry, the striker netting from keepers error. Alex Hay then then made it three with a simple goal. On looking Tennant was dismayed with hands constantly on head, Wrexham where finished no way back from a 3-0 score line.

The second half petered out with Rushden in full control. A wasted journey for the Dragons contingent, Wrexham could not continue like this before somebody will be removed.

Rushden and Diamonds 3-0 Wrexham

Manager Quote: “The players have let me down, there was me saying there would be an improvement when that performance was worse than some of our results last year, we can do nothing but improve against Shrewsbury.â€

Shrewsbury Away

Tennant kept faith with the same squad moving into the heated derby with local rivals Shrewsbury. Tennant’s earlier words of disbelief had not effected the Wrexham players who continued to play with no idea. Shrewsbury took advantage as Wrexham defender Onouha slotted a bullet header into his own net. The majority of the 5,205 crowd jumped for joy while it was the same old story for the Wrexham travelling contingent.

With Tennant’s words ringing in the Wrexham players ears they improved ten fold. Out of favour substitute Hector Sam opened their account for the season. The three subs Tennant had made a huge difference. Sam looking sharp, Talbot hitting above his age and Williams in midfield running the show. The ever improving teenager Talbot netted in the 58th minute with a brilliant acute finish. Wrexham weren’t finished there as Sam completed the rout three quarters way through the game. The fans had finally got something to shout about as the Red Dragon passed the ball about with vigour and prestige. The Shrewsbury players frustration got the better of them when Edwards was sent from the field in the 71st minute.

Shrewsbury Town 1-3 Wrexham

Managers Quote: “The lads responded very well, and I am delighted with the victory, today showed me we do have what it takes, although certain players futures at the club are in doubtâ€

[sky Sports News Reports] Vice captain Darren Ferguson has moved from Wrexham to Falkirk for no fee.

Barnet H

A mere crowd of 3,726 saw Wrexham take on Barnet. The Wrexham side introduced Sam for his first start continuing his partnership with youngster Talbot. The first half was full of activity as both keepers where regularly tested. Neither side could take advantage however Barnet went in happier as Wrexham’s Willaims showed much indiscipline and got sent off with two yellows for argueing with the referee.

The second half saw Barnet make the one man advantage count as they piled on the pressure. Ingham pulling off save after save, whilst the Barnet keeper was rarely tested. The game looked to be heading into a draw until utility player Chambers made a super run and smashed the ball home into the roof of the net. The home fans where jubilant as the ref blew for full time.

Wrexham 1-0 Barnet

Manager Quote: “The timing of the sending off was awful and Williams has to learn, I can’t praise the lads enough on a brilliant display of guts and determination. I can also confirm Darren Lawerence will leave the club in the on coming week, a signing of a talented midfielder by the name of Luke Jackson is done and dusted.â€

Oldham H

A bolstered crowd of around 6,000 saw Oldham and Wrexham compete in a uneventful game. Both sides had limited chances and both sets of fans must of wished they where elsewhere.

Wrexham 0-0 Oldham

Manager Quote: “What can I take out of the game? Several things a point, three games unbeaten and a clean sheet."

A quick update from the last 2 sessions which I missed, big mistake as my ass man sucks. The results were as follows:

6th August Oxford (H) Lost 0-1

10th August Walsall (A) Drew 0-0

13th August Cardiff (H) Drew 2-2

20th August Luton (A) Drew 1-1

So 4 games into the season and Bristol find themselves at the wrong end of the table again (19th). But now Johnston is back in the hotseat after his holiday and ready to turn things back around in search of promotion.

Hartlepool – The rouchie years

A new season, a new challenge. After a successful preseason and some key signings both permanent and loan, Hartlepool are looking like a confident squad with big potential. But friendlies count for nothing when the season kicks off for real. Rouch will be looking for a good start from the team and wont be afraid to change the squad if things don’t pan out as he expects. The players realise that with the competition in the squad, they will need to perform to the best of their ability to stay in this team!

Versus Colchester (A) 6th August 2005

The start of the new season arrives with the pool on the road to Colchester, a place better known for its squaddie prison, rather than its football. Hartlepool had to wait until deep into the second half before Chris Westwood scored to secure three points on opening day. Richie Humphreys worked tirelessly throughout to earn the Man of the Match champagne! icon_biggrin.gif

Final Score Colchester 0 Hartlepool 1

Goals : Hartlepool Westwood (76)

ATT 4960

MOM : Richie Humphreys (Hartlepool)

Versus MK Dons (H) 10th August 2005

The franchise kings ride into town but are soon put to the sword with a penalty to Hartlepool in the 24th minute after Boyd was sliced down by Malvin Kamara, which Eiffon Williams duly converted. Neil Danns opened up his account 2 minutes later grabbing the ‘pools 2nd goal. Richie Humphreys won his second MOM in as many games and is really playing well at the moment icon14.gif

Final ScoreHartlepool 2 MK Dons 0

Versus Torquay (A) 13th August 2005

Hel’s Belles were next as the Soccer AM’s ladette presenters team faced the monkey hangers in League 1. A forgettable first half was more than compensated for in a frantic final 10 minutes of the second half! Gavin Strachan finally beat the heroic ‘quay keeper to give the visitors a deserved lead. Steve Rowe came on in the second half for the disappointing want away Adam Boyd and grabbed the opportunity with both hands, the teenage summer signing was sensational grabbing two coolly taken goals in the dying seconds of the game to earn himself the Man of the Match accolade icon_cool.gif

Final Score Torquay 0 Hartlepool 3

ATT 5288

MOM : Steve Rowe (Hartlepool)

Versus Watford (H) 20th August 2005

Well it had to happen eventually after keeping guard of the onion bag successfully for 280 minutes, Gareth Williams finally let one in, icon_eek.gif a quality strike from Danny Webber gave Watford the lead after just 10 minutes to end the proud record. 30 minutes later Gavin Strachan equalised with a close range header after winning the ball in the air. In the second half a free kick conceded on the edge of the penalty area gave Martin Butler the opportunity to put Watford back in the lead, which he duly did. Eifion Williams had the perfect response for the home team however, and struck from the edge of the area to equalise and give both teams a share of the points. Richie Humphreys grabbed his 3rd MOM of the month after another cracking display! icon14.gif

Midweek under the lights and the first round of the Carling Cup and the pool were looking to get through this tricky fixture against lower league opposition unscathed. They needn’t have worried as the galloped to victory in their most impressive performance this season. Williams opened the scoring after just 17 minutes and secured his brace 7 minutes later, hapless Chester added to their woes when Brown scored an own goal on the stroke of half time. In the second half teenage sensation Steve Rowe came on to replace Adam Boyd and impressed the Hartlepool faithful with a well taken brace in the final 5 minutes to send the fans home with a smile and a warm glow as they wait for the draw for the next round. Richie Humphreys clinched yet another MOM of the month with some more committed play! icon_biggrin.gif

Versus Barnsley (A) 29th August 2005

A Monday night game and the opportunity to move to the top of the table if the pool can get the three points and other results were favourable. Adam Boyd put the Blues in front after just 12 minutes with a lovely strike. Barnsley fought back but were unable to bridge the gap before the interval. In the second half though, the pressure paid off when Richard Langley grabbed the equaliser. Hartlepool immediately threw on the talented Steve Rowe who scored with his first touch to restore the advantage, but again Barnsley battled back and Nicky Wroe levelled it for the home team and that’s how it looked like it would stay until Olafur Valdimar Juliusson popped up deep in injury time with a dramatic winner for the ‘pool!

End of the Month Report

League Position 2nd

As we reach the month end the Hartlepool board confirm that they are delighted with the progress Paul Rouch has made with the team as they sit 2nd in the league remaining undefeated, and having progressed through to the 2nd round of the League cup. As recognition of this feat rouchie received the runners up gong in the manager of the month awards. The discovery of the month must be 17 year old Steve Rowe who looks like he could develop into one of the best finds for the club, he has scored 5 goals in 6 substitute appearances and is the clubs top scorer without starting a game! Richie Humphreys has been sensational with an average rating of 8.17 and 4 Man of the Match awards in August and came in 3rd in the player of the month awards.

So on to tonight's session and we will start with a League Cup game away at Shrewsbury.

Shrewsbury (A) 24th August 2005

So another cup campaign gets underway and Johnston is hoping for more success. The titties go straight out in the hope of scoring a few goals against lower league opposition, and have a couple of good chances in the first 10 minutes. But the first half ends goalless with both teams failing to find the net after a series of chances. So the second half gets underway with another string of chances being missed for the titties. A fantastic save by Phillips in the 93rd minute takes the game into extra time. And it only takes 1 mintue for Bristol to finally grab a goal through striker Junior. However on the stroke of half time in extra time Shrewsbury draw level. Then again in the second half Junior steps up 2 minutes in and makes it 2-1. The man is fighting for a regular place up front with a good performance after coming off the bench. And the game ends, Bristol City advance to the next round.

Shrewsbury 1 Bristol C 2

MOM Kevin Street (Shrewsbury)

ATT 7043

The second round will see Bristol City take on MK Dons at home. But for now it is back to the league and a home game against Bournemouth.

Bournemouth (H) 29th August 2005

The game gets off to a terrible start for Bristol as a fluke goal flys in for Bournemouth after only 10 minutes. And thats all the action for the first half. Second half gets underway with Bristol looking to pull back level, but they fail to do so after 90 minutes, so the game ends 1-0.

Bristol C 0 Bournemouth 0

MOM Shaun Maher (Bournemouth)

ATT 12562

So still no league wins for Bristol and things aren't looking good for the season ahead. But that won't stop the lads from trying their best, and they are all fired up for the next match away at 3rd top Blackpool.

Blackpool (A) 10th September 2005

Nothing much to report from the first half as the teams go in level 0-0 with Bristol having the better of the chances. But fortunes change in the second half as Blackpool make it 1-0 after 65 minutes. But an excellent counter attack after 82 minutes sees Gillespie square things up again. And that's how it ends, 1-1. So yet another draw for the Titties.

Blackpool 1 Bristol C 1

MOM Danny Bolt (Bristol C)

ATT 8913

So things are looking bad again for the Titties with no wins to their name yet. Sitting 20th place in the league. But Johnston is confident things will improve.

The Owls Observer - Pre Season News

After what was an almighty season from the Owls it was Hepburn's job to build on the success in the new season. He firstly went on holiday and then it was onto some scouting missions to find a few new players to help his team challenge for the Premiership once again. Transfers In over the summer were:

Jan Simak - AMC - Free Transfer

Guy Demel - D/DMC - Free Transfer

{I]Alou Diarra D/DMC - Free Transfer[/i]

Jon Otsemobor DR/C - Free Transfer

David Poole - SC - On loan from Manchester United

This was followed by another bosman once the season had begun in Sierra Leone born defender Mustapha Sama.

So no serious money was paid for any players due to the club's financial situation but Hepburn is also looking to improve this over the coming season and has recouped some money by selling Luke Guttridge to Reading for a tidy sum of £500,000.

So Hepburn has strengthened all the central areas of the team to make it tough for any team to get past them. Demal and Simak look very good and have shown what they can do during pre season training.

Hepburn tried to secure further singing while his assistant manager Kevin Summerfield took the owls on a mini tour of england (how exotic!!) and only managed a couple of wins but they never lost so that's a bonus.

So it's onto the season opener for the Owls against Gillingham away and everyone knows what a tough season they are in for if they want to get promoted. A few teams packed with quality players fighting it out for three promotion spots. Should be a great season.

The Owls Observer - The New Season Is Up and Running!!!

That's right the new season has began and the Owls have made a steady start to the new season in the Chmapionship. Unbeaten so far this season, things have kicked off well at Hillsborough. Here is a run down of the first games of the new season......

The League Campaign

Gillingham v Sheffiled Wednesday - (A) - 3-2 Win for the Owls

The Owls kicked off their Chmapionship campaign at Gillingham who are renouned for being tough to beat at home. It seemed as if this trend would continue after only 12 minutes when Darren Byfield had them one up due to some slack defending from the Owls. Hepburn didn't panick and soon saw his side back in the game with a debut goal from new signing Guy Demel who in the second half put the Owls ahead with another stunning strike. The Owls faithful had another hero to worship!!! The other hero of the Owls faithful, Luis Costa duly got his first goal of the campaign to put the Owls 3-1 up and cruising. It could have been more but for some terrible finishing in front of goal. Gillingham pulled a goal back in injury time but it was too late and the Owls had won their season opener!!!!!

Sheffield Wednesday v Wigan - (H) - 1-1 Draw

What a tough home opener this was menat to be for the Owls as they entertained big spending Wigan. The Owls started the game full of confidence due to their superb win at Gillingham. Chances were created but chances were missed by new boy David Poole in for the unfit Luis Costa. He did manage to score the opener in 38 minutes with a good finish. The second half was more of the same as Wigan could just not get going. They had a couple of long range efforts but nothing of real note. Then out of the blue with sixteen minutes left on the clock they were level through Jay Bothroyd. Wigan then shut up shop and the Owls could not find a winner. Hepburn will feel this was two dropped points here.

Sheffield Wednesday v Hull - (H) - 0-0 Draw

A dire boring game as Hull came and defnded resolutely and restricted the Owls to few chances. Not a great spectacle for football. The Owls failed to find the target often enough much to the frustration of Hepburn.

Crewe 1

Lunt 22

Northampton 0

This was a game where we were going against a team a few divisions higher than ourselves. The gulf in class between us both was not that to much of a gap but still a gap that we could not bridge.

We both had the chances to score a goal and Lunt took his chance well to put the home team in front after 22 minutes. This coming so soon after Lunt had missed a penalty after 20 minutes.

As you can see the man of the match was Dolan who kept our defence in shape. With this being a cup game and us going out at the first hurdle I went on the all out attack but we could not find that goal to take the game further.

This was a top of the table clash and after our defeat I hopped my team would put their last game behind them and show me what they are made of.

Narddiello had got on the end of a cross from Shaw to give us the lead after 38 minutes. This was going to be our down fall as we decided to see out the half and go into the break a goal up. A lack of concentration from my team had let Townsend get a shot in from about 30 yards which flew into the net.

So a lot of shouting in the dressing room gets my team up and running for the new half, lets see if we can put the pressure on and go home with all 3 points.

The half was a bit like the first half with no team really getting that extra edge to gain all points. So points are dropped from both teams but we are still in the hunt at the top of the league

With a header from a corner after 3 minutes had got us off to a flying start but this time lets see if we can keep the lead and maybe add to it.

Not long into the half we went 2-0 up with another goal from Smith this time a shot from about 8 yards out. To make Smiths and my day he got in on the act with a pass to his partner up front to make it 3-0

Hartlepool – The rouchie years

After an outstanding August finishing with Hartlepool sitting pretty 2nd in League 1 Will the Monkey Hangers hang on to their form and retain the automatic promotion slot? Read on to find out!

Versus Huddersfield (H) 10th September 2005

The first game in September was someway in due to the break for internationals. Hartlepool face tough opposition in the form of the ‘udders. It was real cat and mouse game that finished midway with honours even and goalless. The second half was a tad more exciting as Boyd broke the deadlock for the home team mid way through the half, and looked to have done enough to secure the points for the ‘pool until McAliskey got a late equaliser for the visitors and ensured a share of the points icon_mad.gif Richie Humphreys continued expanding his champagne cellar with yet another MOM performance helping Hartlepool to the summit of league 1, “we are top of the league†chanted the delirious home fans icon_cool.gif

Hartlepool take on fellow league one contenders in the league cup and soon stamp their authority on the game! The first goal took almost 45 minutes to arrive, but that it would arrive was rarely in doubt! Gavin Strachan was the scorer of the opener. The second half was a similar story with Eifion Williams grabbing the goal that put the result beyond doubt after 77 minutes and sent Hartlepools name in the hat for the 3rd round draw icon14.gif Richie Humphreys was disappointed not to win the MOM but Bradfords keeper was the busier player and deserved some consolation! icon_wink.gif

Versus Notts County (A) 24th September 2005

A great start with a penalty awarded to Hartlepool early in the first half which turns sour when Adam Boyd decides to try and hit a passing 747 instead of scoring! County then take the lead 4 minutes later completely against the run of play with a goal from Gordon! Which is how the score remains until halftime. At the restart Hartlepool continue pressing and looking for the deserved equaliser which Williams gets within 8 minutes! Another penalty is awarded and Strachan steps up to try and give Hartlepool the deserved lead, but another poor effort goes astray. County add insult to injury when they take the lead again with Gordons second goal of the game and only 7 minutes left to play, but Hartlepool respond within a minute to give Williams his second of the night and ensure a share of the points as the game finishes 2-2.

Andrews snuck a goal for Wrexham in the first half and despite peppering the visitors goal, Hartlepool were unable to pull one back and ended up on the wrong side of a 1-0 scoreline icon_frown.gif

Titties Update

After last weeks false start it's time to replay all those games. Starting with a home game against Peterbrough. Result a 1-0 defeat, dissapointing after originally winning the game.

But now onto the League Cup Second round which sees Bristol City taking on MK Dons at home.

MK Dons (H) 20th September 2005

Previously Bristol City won this game, but now at the second time round we will see what happens. MK Dons lose their captain after only 10 minutes through injury. But it doesn't seem to affect them as they have the majority of the chances in the first half, but they are unable to convert any chances. Second half begins and it is Bristol who take the lead with Heffernan converting a penalty kick making it 1-0. And thats how the game ends, taking Bristol City into round 3.

Bristol C 1 MK Dons 0

MOM Kevin Amankwaah (Bristol C)

ATT 7832

So a 1-0 win for the titties seems to make Johnston happy. Another cup run may be on the cards. So back to the league now and the titties travel to Doncaster in hope of climbing out of danger. But before that the draw for the next round of the cup is made and its a bad one for the Titties. The will be travelling to London to take on the mighty Arsenal.

Doncaster (A) 24th September 2005

A number of changes to the side for this game with manager Johnston giving some fringe players a chance to do better than the regulars, obviously dissapointed with quality of play recently. Doncaster going all out for the win too with a 4-2-4 formation. The titties are first out the traps with a string of good chances going a begging early on. But Doncaster claw their way back in to the game and also have a number of decent chances. But it's Bristol who strike first with a fantastic goal by Danny Bolt, set up by Steve Brooker. And thats the end of the first half. Second half starts with a few chances for Bristol, mainly falling to Junior, but he is unable to finish any of them. That is until the 73rd minute where an excellent through ball is slotted home to make it 2-0 for the titties. But 10 minutes later Doncaster pull one back through Neil Roberts. And Luke Wilkshire is stretchered off injured after a good performance. The game finally comes to a close after 95 minutes with Bristol running out 2-1 winners.

Doncaster 1 Bristol C 2

MOM Steve Phillips (Bristol C)

ATT 10513

So a league win for the Titties is well received by the fans as they leave in jubilant mood, happy to see some points being added to the board. Post match analysis shows that Luke Wilkshire will be out for 4 weeks with a sprained ankle.

Another break from league action now, as the LDV Vans trophy comes to town. And Bristol will take on Brentford at home.

Brentford (H) 27th September 2005

So a chance to progress through another cup in a hope to match Sheffield Wednesday's success last season. So the game gets underway with Danny Bolt missing a sitter after only 2 minutes. The chances all seem to be falling to Bristol in this half and after 23 minutes they finally grab a goal through the head of defender Kapic. However that only spurs Brentford on and they grab an equaliser only 5 minutes later. But in a shock breakthrough Junior makes it 2-1 for the titties only 1 minute later. So the first half ends with Bristol in the lead by 2 goals to 1. 5 minutes into the second half and Junior strikes again after a long ball is played through by Kapic. Just when the Brentford fans thought the game was over substitute Heffernan slots home another goal in the 88th minute to make the final score 4-1.

Bristol C 4 Brentford 1

MOM Junior

ATT 7021

So a win in the LDV Vans trophy takes Bristol into the next round and adds 2 goals to new striker Juniors tally. And now it's back to the league with an away game against Chesterfield. But before that the draw for the LDV Vans trophy pairs Bristol with Swindon, at home.

Chesterfield (A) 1st October 2005

The game gets underway and after only 6 minutes Bristol are awarded a penalty which Danny Bolt slots home to make it 1-0. 20 minutes later Junior adds another to his tally to make it 2-0 to Bristol. 3 minutes before half time and Chesterfield pull 1 back making it 2-1 at half time. The second half passes by with only a few chances at either end. So the game finishes 2-1.

Chesterfield 1 Bristol C 2

MOM Steve Simonsen (Chesterfield)

ATT 8309

So another league win and Bristol City find themselves in 16th place, only 4 points behind the playoff spots. And next they will take on Swansea at home.

Swansea (H) 15th October 2005

So the game gets underway with Swansea manager confident of a victory. But its Bristol City who take the lead on the stroke of half time with a great goal from Junior. After 73 minutes Gillespie adds to the scoreline to make it 2-0. And thats how the game ends, moving Bristol C into 12th place.

Bristol C 2 Swansea 0

MOM Junior

ATT 13136

So a final win for the night gives Johnston a 100% record for the session. Lets hope this form can continue into future sessions.

24th Sep 05 League Game

Leyton Orient 1

Willmott 71 (og)

Northampton 0

A game that promised lots and it delivered it as well. The score might not reflect the true game as looking at it, it should have been a lot more in a game that was full of chances.

We played them before and lost 4-3 then the game crashed so this is the re run so to speak. With some of my players still out with injuries I still could not field my strongest team but what I had did me proud out on the pitch tonight.

Smith’s boys rose to the occasion and were unlucky not to take an early lead through Nardiello as he had a shot that hit the post and went to safety. We were finding it hard to play against Leyton’s player Toku who was like a cat on hot bricks. His pace down the wing and his vision made my defence come out in a cold sweat every time the guy got the ball.

With both teams having good possession and having a few good chances the scores remained 0-0 at half time.

I stuck with the same players in the 2nd half but did try to change the tactic as to keep Toku quiet in this half. Leyton were playing a 3 at the back, 2 wing backs, 2 in the centre of midfield, 2 wingers and their loan striker up front. It was Toku that was playing as the left winger who was running from deep who was making all the problems for me in the first half and to some extent in the second. With my player Reeves playing a man marking game on him it seemed to have worked, and so much that he got MoM for it.

We did go behind to a goal in the 71st minute of the game where Toku had got his cross into the box for Steele to get his head onto it only for it to take a wicked deflection off Willmott to put it past his keeper.

With going a goal behind the boys did well and took the game to the home team. We had another chance late on into the game that could have made it 1-1 but Shaw was adjudged offside before the ball had hit the back off the net. So after our good win at home last week we have hit a set back with this loss and it puts us down to 10th.

The crowd was not as big as I expected for this cup game ( perhaps they know I don’t do cup games all that well ) ok we were playing a team that were in the bottom of the league and we would be playing them again soon but I would have liked the crowd to be a bit more so just to get the atmosphere going a bit.

We got off to a flying start so early in the match when Tolley had played a through ball for Nardiello to open up the scoring after only 5 minutes gone of the game. Tolley had the pace to get past the defender on the right and pull the ball back for Nardiello to run onto it and whack it into the bottom corner of the net.

From then the game was going only one way and that was a home win for us. We piled on so much pressure on the Barnet goal it just looked like the playing pitch was cut in half as the boys were camped in the Barnet half for most of the match.

The 30 minute saw Shaw turned with the ball and looked for Reeves. Reeves used his feet well to turn on the ball and got his shot away. Gallagher saved and held onto the ball but he knows that should have gone in to make it 2-0.

Another chance went begging this time for Nardiello as Shaw had turned on the ball to get past his marker and crosses the ball for Mackey. Some good play by Mackey in making some space saw him drive the ball at Gallagher who pushes the ball away. Westwood puts the ball out for a throw. Reeves threw the ball back into the play and gets the return pass, which he then puts in a low cross to the far post. Nardiello connected with a diving header but it just goes over the bar. And so ends the first half with us firmly on top in this game.

Westwood was MoM and so doing just nudged out Gallagher in my opinion the both of them were outstanding in to day’s game and if it were not for them 2 I think we would have scored a few more goals than only the 1 we got today

So Shrewsbury gets the game underway and come out playing a 442 something that my team are happy to play against after their last game.

Caruthers passed the ball along to Shaw who in turn gets a pass off to Nardiello. Nardiello moved out to the left of the park with the ball and got a pass into the penalty box for Tolley to get on the end of it. Tolley has found space in the box and gets his shot off to give us a 1-0 lead after such a short time of playing.

This was only going to be the main event of the first half, as both teams had their chances but they could not get that killer touch.

Into the 2nd half as and it was the same as the first with no team really getting the upper hand in the match. We had chances to score and so did the visitors, but it was down to Mackey to get the final goal of the match. His run from deep had caught the defenders napping at the back as he ghosted in with a tap in from 6 yards out.

All done and dusted we get a win in the league at last.

Now this was the re match and a game where we were lucky to come away with any points. How to think that Barnet are in the bottom 3 of the table after this display God knows. We were played off the park and had to use up our lady luck in this game. We had to be at our best in the defensive department today and to some extent we were.

Even when we kicked off we were under pressure as we had to play the ball all the way back to the keeper just to keep the ball. Not long after West had to clear the ball off the line and Bull our keeper had to make 2 outstanding saves just to keep it at 0-0. Graziolli must have seen a red mist as he had a right old go at the Ref who sent him off after 24 minutes of the game for a tackle that was inflicted on Rowson from Clist and Graziolli must have thought it was not and said so. Thing is he kept on and on at the Ref only to see the yellow card turn to another yellow then red. ( We must be in with a chance now against 10 men ?)

As the half is coming to an end a corner was floated in and in his eagerness to get the ball away Willmott pushed Buckley. The Ref saw this and gave a pen in which Bailey scored.

Even though we were a player up it did not feel like it as we went about trying to get this goal back. We had a bit of luck near the end of the match when Morley could not control the ball that came in from Tolley. Mackey found some space when the ball came to him and had a shot which just went in past the keepers hands and just squeeze in the near post. The scores were level at 1-1 at that is how the game finished.

Just to let you know in the last 2 games played we have been Refereed by the same guy Tim Howes ( Now I don’t remember signing up a ref up to help us out, must be one of the Directors then)

The Owls Observer – Early Season Optimism

The Owls have continued there great start to the season with some superb performances of late. They find themselves still unbeaten in the Championship and sitting a very respectable 4th position in the league. Hepburn has changed the shape of the team slightly to accommodate his new signing and it is working very well at the moment. He has went with three up front for a more attacking look and boy is it working. Here is a rundown of the latest fixtures at Hillsborough.

The League Campaign

Some superb performances have seen the Owls climb to 4th in the league and at this early stage the media is touting the owls for promotion. Hepburn has remained silent over this talk and lets his team do the talking on the pitch. Here is a rundown of the latest games…..

Norwich v Sheffield Wednesday – (A) – 1-0 Win for the Owls

After the stalemate against Hull at Hillsborough it was up to Hepburn to motivate his men for the potentially power keg clash against Norwich at Carrow Road. The Owls battled and battled throughout the game as Norwich had them under a lot of pressure throughout. Hepburn’s team was still trying to gel together and there seemed no fluency in their play. Norwich missed a hatful of chances in both halves and while the Owls going forward looked dangerous. It was that man Jordi Cruyff just back from injury who grabbed the priceless goal to give the Owls the three points and leave Megson’s Canaries wondering how they did not at least get a draw from this game. It wasn’t pretty from the Owls but the three points was all that Hepburn wanted.

Sheffield Wednesday v Brighton – (H) – 0-0 Draw

It was back to Hillsborough for the next Championship encounter for the Owls as they faced Brighton. It was another frustrating afternoon for the Owls as they drew yet another blank as chance after chance was missed. Hepburn was not happy as he left the stadium after the game.

Leeds v Sheffield Wednesday - (A) – 1-1 Draw

It was back onto the road again for the Owls as they faced another one of the teams tipped for promotion this year in Leeds United. The Owls came away with a point and a deserved point as they had their chances, as did Leeds. At times it was some great defending from the Owls to keep Leeds out but it showed the Owls can play good football and battle for points, there to be won. The Owls were in front on the half hour as Jan Simak tucked a beautiful penalty home after Costa was fouled. They had further chances to increase their lead in the first half but could not take them. Leeds came out second half fired up and really took the game to the Owls but the Owls stood firm until the 63rd minute when a corner led to Matthew Kilgallon heading home unmarked to equalise for Leeds. It was a soft goal to lose but the Owls did not let their heads go down to their credit and held out for a draw.

Sheffield Wednesday v Millwall – (H) – 2-0 Win for the Owls

A game of total domination here for the Owls who enjoyed most of the possession and most of the chances throughout the match. Millwall could not muster one shot on the Owls goal much to the pleasure of Hepburn who praised his defence in particular after the match. The Owls found it hard to break down a stuffy Millwall rearguard but they managed to score twice and both came from new signing Jan Simak. He got one from the penalty spot and the other a nice finish inside the penalty area along with the man of the match award as well. He was impressive throughout and is starting to find his feet in this Owls side.

Sheffield Wednesday v Tranmere – (H) – 0-0 Draw

Last year’s champions against last year’s runners up at Hillsborough and what a dull game they served up. Fortunes of both clubs are rather different this year as the Owls are unbeaten and Tranmere are struggling to pick up any points and find themselves already battling relegation. On this performance neither team looked as if they were Championship material. The Owls’ finishing was terrible and Tranmere could not pass the ball, it was horrible viewing. A game that is just best forgotten about.

Preston v Sheffield Wednesday – (A) – 3-0 Win for the Owls

Hepburn surprised everyone at Deepdale by changing his tactics and made the Owls a more attacking force as he had felt his side did not create enough clear cut chances inside the opponent’s penalty area. He went for three up front with Jordi Cruyff and Richie Partridge much further up the pitch helping Costa out. The results of this tactical switch were there to see as they came away with a mighty impressive win. Costa got the Owls off to a great start with a goal after 12 minutes and they kept up the pressure for most of the half but could not add to their lead. In the second half it was more of the same from Wednesday as they piled forward in search of a second goal. They did not have to wait long as Costa added a second after 56 minutes of play. Hepburn then urged his men forward more to get more goals to boost the confidence and improve their goal difference. His men responded a got a third goal through Richie Partridge twenty minutes from time to finish off Preston who were wondering what had just hit them.

Reading v Sheffield Wednesday – (A) – 1-0 Win for the Owls

After his teams attacking display at Deepdale Hepburn stuck with the same formation as they went to the Madejski Stadium to face Reading who were struggling at the bottom of the Championship. The Owls started the match full of confidence and took the game to Reading who had been leaking goals for fun all season. Reading, lacking in confidence in front of goal never really troubled Lucas in the Owls goal throughout the game. The goal Wednesday scored came from an unlikely source in Jamie Victory from a corner kick but they all count. Hepburn was frustrated though that his team did not finish off their opponents by grabbing an all important second goal but they managed the three points in the end.

Sheffield Wednesday v Stoke – (H) – 0-0 draw

It was back to Hillsborough as they entertained Stoke and another dull performance from the home team. Stoke outplayed them in this match and should have came away with the three points but for David Lucas in the Owls goal. The Owls did not look the same without Cruyff going down the left flank. Simak another big player for Wednesday did not get started and was rarely on the ball as Stoke pressed and pressed and really knocked the Owls out their stride. Poor performance from the Owls here left Hepburn fuming.

Crystal Palace v Sheffield Wednesday – (A) – 4-0 Win for the Owls

Quite simply the best performance from the Owls this season. All over the pitch they were on top, as Palace could not cope with the Owls in full flight. Not one player had a bad game and good timing as well as they have a huge game against Bolton following this one. Jan Simak missed a glorious opportunity to get the Owls off the perfect start by missing a penalty after only two minutes played. Hepburn feared the worst as Palace themselves managed to get a penalty but the prolific Andy Johnson missed from the spot. A minute later Simak who made up for his earlier miss had the Owls in front and they built on this, grew in confidence and took Palace apart for the remainder of the first half. Costa added number two after 29 minutes and then Partridge made it three after 35 minutes. It was unbelievable stuff from the Owls. In the second half particularly the early stages the Owls started where they left off and Costa made it four. Magical stuff. They took their foot off the gas after that and let Palace back into the match but they could not find a way past a resolute Owls defence.

The League Cup Adventure

Much like last season the adventure in the League Cup ended at round 2 for the Owls as Newcastle sent the Owls spinning out the cup with a 2-0 win over them at Hillsborough. In round one the Owls tore League Two side Brentford apart by three goals to nil. The goals came from one man and that man is of course Luis Costa. So another non eventful cup run for the Owls who do not seem to get the luck of the draw but that will maybe change come the FA Cup.

It has been a great start to the season for the Owls who seem to play better away from Hillsborough which maybe a cause for concern for Hepburn if the run continues. Lets hope this unbeaten run continues and Hepburn’s team are still unbeaten the next time the Owls Observer is released.

Titties News

Breaking news, Bristol City manager was caught drinking at a local Irish pub on Wednesday evening while leaving the assistant manager in charge of the league tie away at Sheffield United. Johnston had given the excuse that he was seriously ill and couldn't make it but after being caught downing shots of sambuca at the bar he held his head in shame. Fans of the club are said to be mad at the manager especially since the Assistant manager was unable to continue the clubs winning streak, losing the game 1 goal to nil. In a press conference on Thursday afternoon, a hungover looking Johnston apologised to the fans for his actions and promised to turn the fortunes of the club around to make up for his actions. A spokesman from the fan's association is said to have accepted the manager's apology on behalf of the City fanbase. The club look to put this unfortunate incident behind them and focus on the league at hand with a tricky home game against Bradford City coming up.

Titties News

So with the midweek disaster in the past it's onto the weekends games, and Bristol play host to Bradford City.

League One

Bradford City (H) 22nd October 2005

A number of changes have been made to the Bristol City for this game against 10th place Bradford City. Johnston hoping he can make up for his midweek mistake is going all out for the win today. Bradford opt for a simple 4-4-2 formation. And it pays off after only 9 minutes as they make it 1-0. 6 minutes later right winger Anyinsah is stretchered off to be replaced by Scott Murray. Minutes later a through ball is slotted home by Danny Bolt, only to be dissallowed for offside. Then just before half time Bradford add another to the tally to make it 2-0, leaving Bristol with a tricky second half. 5 minutes into the second half and some fantastic play sees Graeme Holmes set up Junior for an excellent goal, making it 2-1. After 61 minutes Danny Shittu sees his powerful strike come cannoning back off the crossbar. Only 4 minutes later a cross from the left wing by Danny Bolt is met by the head of Junior who makes it 2-2. However almost immediately Bradford hit back with a tap in rebound to make it 3-2. With 88 minutes on the clock a bad kick out by the Bradford keeper falls straight to Junior who attempts a lob, but somehow the keeper manages to get his fingertips to the ball and force it over the bar. The game ends 3-2.

Bristol C 2 Bradford C 3

MOM: Graeme Holmes 9 (Bristol C)

Goal Scorers: Junior (50,65)

Assists: Holmes (50), Bolt (65)

ATT: 10045

So a dissapointing defeat for Bristol after a good comeback, but its now time for a big game against Arsenal in the league cup.

League Cup 3rd Round

Arsenal (A) 26th October 2005

So a big game for the Titties with hopes of progressing through to the next round of the league cup while causing a huge upset. However it will be tough, and nobody is expecting Bristol City to do much against the mighty Arsenal. Bristol manage to withstand the pressure of Arsenals constant attack and almost manage to hit them on the break with Danny Bolt dribbling from his own area only to see his shot deflected wide of the post. With not much more to report from the first half the teams go in all square at half time, with the Bristol fans very happy to be on level terms. However it takes only 1 minute of the second half for Arsenal to finally take the lead through George Hughes. Then again in the 71st minute a fabulous strike by Fabregas makes it 2-0. And that's how it ends, so cup dream over for Bristol.

Arsenal 2 Bristol C 0

MOM: Fabregas 9 (Arsenal)

ATT: 27161

So that's one cup campaign over for the season, but it was to be expected that Arsenal would be too good for us. But back to the league and next it is away to Colchester.

League One

Colchester (A) 29th October 2005

Colchester start out with an attacking 4-3-3 formation but it's Bristol who strike first with young Danny Knight returning from loan at Bristol Rovers to score on his debut. However Colchester fight back and finally grab an equaliser after 30 minutes. On the stroke of half time Bekim Kapic heads home from a corner but the goal is disallowed for a push. Second half gets underway with Colchester hitting the bar and Danny Bolt blasting over. The game gets quite exciting with chances flying in at either end. However after 70 minutes Danny Bolt receives his second yellow card and is sent for an early bath. However this doesn't stop City going all out for the win. More bad news in the 86th minute however with starlet Danny Knight being stretchered off injured. But after 4 minutes of injury time the game finishes 1-1.

Colchester 1 Bristol C 1

MOM: Andy Oakes 10 (Colchester)

Goal Scorers: Knight (15)

Assists: Junior (15)

ATT: 5730

Only a draw for Bristol then, but a few encouraging performances from certain players leaves manager Johnston at least slightly happy. 4 players came out of the game with a 9 rating including newboys Wilkshire and Knight. However Danny Knight will have to wait another 2 weeks before he can play again as he has damaged his shoulder. On a positive note however Bristol have secured the services of Jonathan Spector on loan from Man United until the end of the season.

LDV Vans Trophy Round 2

Swindon (H) 1st November 2005

So the game gets underway with Bristol looking to end Swindons unbeaten run. However the first half passes by with not much to report until the 44th minute where some lovely play by Heffernan sees Bristol go in 1 nil up at half time. With a few chances at either end in the second half neither team is able to score, that is until Swindon keeper Evans drops the ball at Junior's feet when under no pressure, and Junior has no problem slotting the ball home to make it 2-0.

Bristol C 2 Swindon 0

MOM: Trond Andersen 8 (Bristol C)

Goal Scorers: Heffenan (44), Junior (88)

Assists: Wilkshire (44)

ATT: 10578

Bristol City progress to the 3rd round of the LDV Vans trophy and the fans are excited at the prospect of possibly lifting a trophy this season.

League One

Torquay (A) 5th November 2005

After some heavy pressure for the away team they finally manage to slot one home after 22 minutes, Junior the scorer. After the goal not much happens for the remainder of the first half. 10 minutes into the second half and Junior has a header fly inches past the post. Then minutes later finds himself clean through on the goalie, only to be pulled back for offside. 77 minutes gone and substitute Gillespie shows he is willing to fight for his place as he slots home to make it 2-0. And the game ends with Trond Andersen in particularly outstanding form.

Torquay 0 Bristol C 2

MOM: Trond Andersen 10 (Bristol C)

Goal Scorers: Junior (22), Gillespie (77)

Assists: Andersen (22), Junior (77)

ATT: 6139

So a win for Bristol City pushes them up a few places to 14th now in the league. But still 10 points off a playoff spot, there is still a lot of hard work to be done.

League One

MK Dons (H) 9th November 2005

So more league action and Bristol are going all out for the win with a number of good opportunities in the opening minutes. However the Dons are able to withstand the pressure until half time, so that's how the first half ends, 0-0. The second half sees the Dons withstanding heavy pressure again, and again they are able to make it until the end of the game.

Bristol C 0 MK Dons 0

MOM: Paul Hart 8 (MK Dons)

ATT: 7191

So a boring game ending goaless sees Bristol pick up another point, but remain in 14th position. And now for a break in league action as Bristol City travel to Barnsley in the first round of the FA Cup, with the game being televised live.

FA Cup 1st Round

Barnsley (A) 12th November 2005

So, it's FA Cup time again, and many people are expecting Bristol to build on their success from last season and put together another long cup run. And with 15 minutes on the clock things are looking slightly promising for the Titties with a number of shots flying in. However it is Barnsley who take the lead after 32 minutes. And that's how the half ends. The second half progresses much like the first with not much to report but a number of chances for Bristol. However Bristol fail to take their chances and the game ends 1-0 to Barnsley.

Barnsley 1 Bristol C 0

MOM: Paul Reid 8 (Barnsley)

ATT: 21723

So, no cup run for Bristol this season, but that leaves them plenty of time to concentrate on the league in hope that they may get into a playoff position.

League One

Watford (H) 19th November 2005

A tough game now for the titties against 3rd place Watford, but young starlet Danny Knight returns hoping to put in another performance like his debut. And it takes only 4 mintues for him to get on the scoresheet, making it 1-0. However Watford hit back only 10 minutes later to make it 1-1. Danny Knight shows his skill again later on with another goal from a through ball but unfortunately it was disallowed for offside. And the half ends 1-1. Second half starts with a good chance for Bristol, however it goes slightly over the bar. 68 minutes gone and Watford are given a soft penalty, however Phillips pulls off a fantastic save to keep the titties in the game. Steven Gillespie once again comes off the bench and shows his class by firing in a goal after 85 minutes to make it 2-1. Bristol try their best to end the game there and then with a series of chances and finally they do so with Scott Murray slotting home from close range.

Bristol C 3 Watford 1

MOM: Scott Murray 9 (Bristol C)

Goal Scorers: Knight (4), Gillespie (85), Murray (92)

Assists: Andersen (85), Gillespie (92)

ATT: 10204

So another win for Bristol City and they are now in 13th position and only 2 points behind Rouchie's Hartlepool, making the next league game of vital importance as Bristol travel to face Hartlepool. Johnston will be hoping to take something from the first meeting between the 2 sides.

Welcome to yet another day in the trials of being a manager. First up is a home game.

22nd Oct 05 League Game

Northampton 0

Rushden 0

This was a game that was what I would call a bit of a dull one. With not much action going on in both penalty boxes it was a game that was fought out in the centre of the park. Here both teams cancelled each other out and with the 90 minutes played only 4 shots were taken today.

The only bit of excitement for the crowd would have been the sending off of Willmott for his 2nd yellow card of the day.

Oldham 0

Northampton 0

Yet another 0-0 draw but this time it was a lot different from our last game. We were playing a team that were in 4th place and flying at the moment. If it was not for some good defending by our team we could have lost this match.

With Oldham having 19 shots at our goal I think its time to spend some more time with the players on the training pitch on closing down the opposition.

So yet another draw and another few points dropped in the race for a play off place.

Nardiello 78 (pen) Anderson 85

With the league taking a rest this week for us we have a tricky tie in the cup. And you know what we are in the same mess as the last game, we are getting out played and not getting any shots at goal. So with this we decided to try and get them back at our place and we went with 5 across the park to stop the runs.

It was on one of our runs into the Wycombe box where we got a bit of luck. The Ref had seen Stonebridge pull Anderson’s shirt and awarded a penalty. Nardiello stepped up and put us in front.

The second goal for us came from a corner that was played down the touchline to Singh who floated a cross in to see the on running Anderson get his head onto the cross to put us 2-0 ahead.

Garricks did get a goal back for the home team but it was a little to late to get them back into the game.

So the big game between the 2 human managers in the division. Could Nick’s Wrexham keep up the good run of form they were on?

With Wrexham playing an attacking 442 I feel we are in for a hard game today.

With my big players coming back form injury or suspensions we decide to pack the midfield and hit Wrexham on the break. It has seemed to have given Wrexham a bit of a problem as Shaw had played out of his skin today. Nick might say he has the new Giggs in his team but on today’s performance Shaw is Northampton’s version.

Marshall had half volleyed the ball forward to Nardiello who ran at the Wrexham players. With a pass out to the left the ball reaches Shaw who skins the defence and gets a cross in for Nardiello. Nardiello was in a dangerous position and through on goal and Bang he took a shot that beat the keeper. 1-0 to us and a deserved lead at this stage of the game.

Phil Anderson had one of them games that he wants to forget, also his playing partner Steve James in the centre of the park for Wrexham was also not at his best today. With the 5 in midfield and Shaw given a free run around and it was his pass in the 86th minute to Smith that got our 2nd goal of the game and all the points.

So with a change of competitions and the Cheltenham manger thinking that it will be a walk over for his team today it was pleasing to go 1-0 up so soon in the match

West had played a cross field ball out to the wing for Tolley to get hold of the ball who then put the ball into the danger area where Nardiello was waiting. Nardiello got his head onto the ball but his header at the goal was saved by the keeper. The keeper seemed to have the ball under control but as he came down on the ground the ball slipped from his grasp and Nardiello was on hand to knock the ball in the net.

Going into the break both teams had the chances but it was us going into the dressing rooms the goal up in the game.

A mistake in our defence had let in May for his goal today. The ball had come to Dolan who had played a square pass to Marshall but he did not see the Striker May who gladly picked up the lose ball to pump it past Bull.

We seemed to have played better in this game when we went a player down. Ok we went a goal up from Tolley but that was against the run of play. West was sent off for a tackle on Tipton who was one on one with the keeper so the Ref had no choice but to give him the red card and a trip to the bathroom all for himself.

We hit Macclesfield on the break with a move with Anderson, Tolley and Smith in which Smith had put the ball to the keepers left hand to make the game fairly safe for us.

A couple of great saves from Bull in the 80th and 87th minute had kept us in the game and made sure we were going home with all the points

Update so far

We have got through to the ¼ finals of the LDV Vans Trophy with a hard fought game away at Wycombe. The so called manager of Cheltenham thought we were going to be a push over in FA Cup ( Think again big boy, you were lucky last time Mr Ward )

We started to have a few problems early on in the session with not getting any goals in our games but with a slight change of players and tactics we might have turned the corner.

The pleasing thing for me and the team is we are still in a play off place after losing some ground early on and we are still in the money making cups.

The players that were out for a few months with injuries are now back and fighting for their places on the team sheets, and players that are playing some of them are making it to teams of the week or team of the month.

As for my old team Barrow they are holding their own in the Conference in mid table and still have most of their players.( we might have taken 1 or 2 and are doing ok )

Versus Stockport (H) 1st October 2005

Hartlepool got straight back to winning ways with a comfortable 1-0 victory over Stockport after a first half goal from Adam Boyd set the ‘pool on their way. Gavin Strachan was Man of the Match for his tireless work in midfield icon_biggrin.gif

Yoevil took a first half lead courtesy of a superb strike from Roberts, and the ‘pool had to wait until the 75th minute to get back on level terms with a well taken goal from wonderkid Rowe. Unfortunately Yoevil were gunning for the three points and Savage secured those with an 82nd minute winner, which gave Hartlepool their first league defeat of the season icon_frown.gif

A poor performance at home saw the monkey hangers fall behind to an early goal from Lewis. It took a fortuitous penalty in the second half, which Bardsley duly converted, to draw level. Unfortunately neither team was able to break the deadlock after that and the game finished even.

A fantastic start for Hartlepool against the premiership outfit with Strachan netting after only 2 minutes, then Williams put the pool into seventh heaven as he doubled the advantage halfway through the first half. Charlton were a lot more focussed in the second period and equalised just after the hour. A late revival saw Lisbie getting a cruel equaliser on 85 minutes and then a real twist of the knife as Charlton stole the winner 4 minutes later to leave the visitors totally deflated and heartbroken. Titties News

Devastating news for Bristol City today as manager David Johnston has been called away on business and will be unable to take care of the team, leaving them in the hands of the ******** assistant manager. Johnston regrets having to take such actions but has stated that it is unavoidable.

And more bad news for the club, Johnston has reportedly been seen mingling with Leprechauns, sources close to the titties camp claim that there is nothing going on between them, but the rumours at the moment are that Johnston is planning some kind of St Patricks day party. Understandably he is trying to keep this a secret since partying with Leprechauns will take him away from his management duties, leaving ass man in charge once again.

Translation

To make it clearer, I can't play tonight because I have to work at the pub, everyone seems to be sick today. And on Thursday it is Paddy's day (a big thing for anyone working in an Irish pub, even in Germany) so I won't be able to make it on Thursday night either. As much as I hate leaving my assistant in charge, I have to do it icon_frown.gif. Even worse is it pretty much hands Rouchie the win in the first game tonight icon_frown.gif.

The guy hates me and I hate him so that’s a good start for the game. Both managers do not see eye to eye so this should be a good game then.

This game should have not of gone to extra time as we had a goal disallowed for a player being in an offside position on the 63rd minute. With our captain carried off after 20 minutes of the game gone I thought this is going to be an uphill struggle.

We got a goal from Nardiello but this was cancelled out by May. In the extra time we fell short of fitness and got caught out by it and so losing the game.

The Owls Observer - Up and Down like a Fricking Yo-Yo!!!

Yes folks as the title suggests it has been one up and down season so far for the Owls. There indifferent form has seen them climb into 4th position surprisingly but way behind the leaders Bolton who are running away with the title. The Owls find themselves a massive 18 points behind them therefore Nottingham Forest, sitting in the runners up spot at the moment seem a more realistic challenge.

The League Campaign

Home form seems to be real problem at the moment for Hepburn's Owls as they do not seem to be able to buy a perormance at home in front of the Hillsborough faithful. We are almost at the halfway point of the league campaign and the Owls have only won two games at home all season long. They have a very impresive unbeaten away record and find themselves one of two teams unbeaten away from home, the other being Bolton. Here is a rundown of the latest games.......

Sheffield Wednesday v Bolton - (H) - 0-1 Defeat

A cruical game for the Owls if they were wanting to mount a serious title challenge as Bolton were already way out in front at this early stage in the season. The Owls came into this game on the back of a magnificent 4-0 win over Crystal Palace and were bursting with confidence as were Bolton who were living up to their pre season tage as title contenders. It was Bolton however that dominated this game and just did not allow the Owls to get into their stride, pressing them at every opportunity. For all their possession they did not create many clear cut chances but at least they were creating chances. Down the other end Bolton Jussi Jaaskelainen must have been getting cold as he had nothing to do throughout the entire game. it was a one sided contest that was decided by the star of the show Jay Jay Okocha but in truth the guldf between the two teams was huge at the end of the day.

Rotherham v Sheffield Wednesday - (A) - 3-2 Win for the Owls

It was back onto the road and the Owls again showed they are a tough nut to crack away from home as they won at Rotherham. The Owls started off like an express train as Guy Demel had them ahead after only ten minutes. Rotherham responded well and equalised almost immediately due to some slack defending from the Owls. Again the Owls were ahead through a Simak penalty and again Rotherham repsonded with an equaliser. This was some game to watch, end to end stuff as both teams were going at each other. The game was decided by another penalty as Simak converted his second penalty and it proved to be the winner. Rotherham had chances to equalise again but Lucas was in marvellous form for the Owls.

Sheffield Wednesday v Ipswich - (H) - 0-2 Defeat

Yet another inept, poor home performance from the Owls and Hepburn must have been tearing his hair out at some of the defending his team were doing in this one. They gifted this game to Ipswich and at the other end could not finish the chances that were created. Poor, Very poor. The fans must have been wondering what on earth was going on.

Burnley v Sheffield Wednesday - (A) - 1-0 Win for the Owls

Another away game and yet another win for Wednesday. They left it late, very late in fact but they deserved a victory after all the effort and hard work they put into this performance. Strong at the back and looking sharp and dangerous up front, it spet danger for Burnley. The hero was loan signing Richie Partridge who finally put away a chance in the 90th minute. Everyone on the Wednesday bench was up celebrating, showing just what it meant to everyone at the club.

Sheffield Wednesday v Notts Forest - (H) - 1-3 Defeat

Continuing the trend at home as another home game went and yet another Owls defeat. It was an open game with Forest really just scoring more of the chances they created but the ease at which they created them was causing Hepburn problems. Partridge got the Owls only goal of the game as Andy reid, Pual Evans and Kevin Campbell got he Forest goals. Hepburn was growing concerned at his team's inability to produce a good performance at home and was hoping to rectify this before too long.

Crewe v Sheffield Wednesday - (A) - 2-0 Win for the Owls

Another superb away perfoemance from the Owls and an absolute freak goal from Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper David Lucas helped them on their way to victory. David Poole also got a goal to boost his confidence for the restof the season. All in all a good solid performance from the Owls and they are still deep in the hunt for promotion.

Sheffield Wednesday v Derby - (H) - 1-1

Another home game and still no win but it was a slight improvement on their last few games at home. A game of few chances and Derby started a lot better as the Owls players and fans alike seemed very nervous. On the stroke of half time it got worse as Derby took the lead and the Owls fans must have been thinking the worst. In the second half the Wosl played alot better but again did not really create many clear cut openings. Five minutes from time they found an equaliser from forgotten man Lee Peacock but it still was not enough for the precious three points at home they so badly needed.

QPR v Sheffield Wednesday - (A) - 0-0

It was meant to be a battle for the bragging rights in EFB as Hepburn's Owls travelled to Loftus Road to meet Rob Perry's QPR but he was found to be awol on the day of the game. It was a dull boring game with neither team playing well in all honesty. The Owls will feel better witha point as they were away from home but it really was boring.

Sheffield Wednesday v Plymouth - (H) - 2-0 Win for the Owls

Shock, Horror Hepburn's Owls finally win a game on their own ground and what a win it was too. Relief was felt all around the stadium as the ref blew the full time whistle as the Owls finally recorded their second home win of the season. All the praise went to Luis Costa who put away the chances that were created for him but the star of the show was Simak who was simply awesome throughout this game. His passing. movement and just sheer ability was a joy to behold. The Owls will do well to hold onto him when his contract is up for renewal as many top clubs will be after him.

Coventry v Sheffield Wednesday - (A) - 3-2 Win for the Owls

Another fine away performance from the Owls saw them record straight wins for the first time this season and Hepburn was a happy man with what he saw from his team. Hepburn was forced into making a few changes for this game but those changes seemed to pay off. Matthew Hamshaw and Eoin Jess were brought in to replace Simak and Cruyff who were both out injured. The Owls came out firing and put Coventry under a lot of pressure early on and it paid off as by half time they were 2-0 up and cruising. Goals came from Eoin Jess and Matthew Hamshaw and made the second half a bit of a training exercise. Eoin Jess made it 3-0 for the Owls after scoring the rebound to his missed penalty. Wednesday then switched off after the third goal and allowed Coventry back into the game but it wasn't enough to stop the Owls from getting three more points in the bag. Hepburn was not happy when his players were coming off the pitch, berating his players for almost letting a three goal lead slip through their hands.

So almost midway through the season and the Owls are in contention for promotion to the Premiership. Home form is less of a worry now and the lets hope the magnificent away form continues.

Hartlepool – The rouchie years

November saw Hartlepools fortunes improve with a couple of well deserved wins and some creditable draws against stern opposition. The manager will be looking for the team to continue the improving trend and head towards the playoff zone again as we approach Christmas and the new year.

Versus Oxford (A) 4th December 2005 – FA Cup 2nd Round

With Oxford’s Lee Roget dismissed in the 3rd minute Hartlepool should have tied this up easily, but despite creating chance after chance, they were unable to make any of them count and were left frustrated at the end as Oxford eked out a goalless draw to gain a replay at Hartlepools ground. That the Oxford keeper gained the MOM award tells you all you need to know icon13.gif

Final Score Oxford 0 Hartlepool 0

ATT 11110

MOM : Andy Marriott (Oxford)

Versus Peterborough(A) 10th December 2005

Hartlepool dominated this game but had to wait until the second half to get their just rewards when Bardsley put the ‘pool ahead from the spot. This did not stop Hartlepools onslaught though as they sought to kill the game off. When Peterborough equalised on 80 it looked like Hartlepool were going to be robbed of a well deserved victory as Constantine celebrated his goal, however, young starlet, Steve Rowe had other ideas and he secured the points 3 minutes later with the deserved second goal. The posh keeper still managed to gain the MOM award despite ending up on the losing side, again speaking volumes for the dominance of Hartlepool icon_biggrin.gif

Another game where Hartlepool were not wide awake in the first half, and again fell behind to two goals, both from Chesterfields N’Toya! icon_eek.gif The second half saw an improbable revival, first with Strachan pulling one back just before the hour, and then a late equaliser from Eifion Williams, before Adam Boyd sent the travelling ‘pool fans in to raptures with an injury time winner, to complete a superb comeback!! icon_cool.gif

Final Score Chesterfield 2 Hartlepool 3

Goals : Chesterfield N’Toya (29,42)

Hartlepool Strachan (59) Williams (86) Boyd (90)

ATT 7287

MOM : Kieran Richardson (Hartlepool)

Versus Sheff Utd (A) 26th December 2005

Yet another bloody game where the ‘pool concede 2 in the first 45! This time its Lester and Etuhu sticking them in for Sheffield United, and there is no magic second half revival as the monkey hangers slump to another defeat icon_frown.gif

Final Score Sheff Utd 2 Hartlepool 0

Goals : Sheff Utd Etuhu (9) Lester (37)

ATT 21533

MOM : Kevin Hill (Sheff Utd )

Versus Bradford City (H) 28th December 2005

The 4th game in succession that Hartlepool concede 2 in the opening half, with Wetherall striking from the spot and Kearney scoring midway through the half. This time however Hartlepool managed to respond before the interval! In fact, they even managed to get the first goal! Jack Wilkinson scoring after only 4 minutes and then Juliusson levelling just before the break. The fans must have been looking forward to the second half after such an eventful start! However, they were soon asleep in the stands as the second half did not reach the heights of the first and was a real anticlimax to all that paid to watch! icon13.gif

Final Score Hartlepool 2 Bradford 2

Goals : Bradford Wetherall (10) Kearney (26)

Hartlepool Boyd (4) Strachan (44)

ATT 7523

MOM : Tom Kearney (Bradford)

Titties Update

Johnston returns to the helm after his forced absence to mixed results:

Hartlepool Away (0-1)

Barnsley Away (0-1)

Cardiff Away LDV Vans Trophy S Qtr Final (2-1)

Huddersfield Home (2-0)

Stockport Away (0-0)

Notts Co Home (1-0)

Yeovil Home (2-0)

Swindon Away (1-1)

Oxford Away (0-0)

Luton Home (0-0)

Walsall Home (1-1)

So a few wins a few defeats and a few draws for the titties in my absence, so I guess the Assistant can keep his job, for now.

But now on to the current session and it is a home game against Bournemouth in the LDV Vans Trophy S Semi Final.

LDV Vans Trophy S Semi Final

Bournemouth (H) 24 January 2006

So a few changes for Bristol going into this game. And straight away the changes pay off as Bristol take the lead after on 1 minute through Junior. However moments later Graeme Holmes is carried off injured. Then more bad news only 5 minutes later as Junior is sent off for a second booking. It takes 30 minutes for the next big moment and this time it is good news for Bristol as Murray sets up Heffernan for a second goal making it 2-0. And that's half time. Second half gets underway with Bournemouth failing to take advantage of the extra man. Then after 75 minutes Bristol extend their lead to 3 through Scott Murray. 7 minutes later Heffernan gets his second making it 4-0. Bournemouth manage a late consolation, 4-1. Then another sending off, as Sverrison gets his second yellow.

Bristol C 4 Bournemouth 1

MOM: Paul Heffernan 9 (Bristol C)

Goal Scorers: Junior (1), Heffernan (36,82), Murray (75)

Assists: Murray (1,36,82), Docherty(75)

ATT: 7085

So a good victory for Bristol takes them into the next round of the cup.

But on to the next game and it's back to the league campaign and a home game against Blackpool.

League One

Blackpool (H) 28th January 2006

So a few injuries and suspensions for Bristol and youngster Lee Wallace a recent free transfer signing will make his debut. But with not much to report in the first 40 minutes Blackpool take advantage of a poor defence and make it 1-0 at half time. So the second half gets underway and despite a lot of pressure from Bristol City they fail to pull back on level terms, so the game ends 1-0 to Blackpool.

Bristol C 0 Blackpool 1

MOM: Danny Coid 8(Blackpool)

ATT: 9813

So a league defeat for the titties and the board make it clear to Johnston that they are not happy at all, stating that they expect the team to be doing much better.

But Johnston ignores this and starts to prepare for the next league match away at Bournemouth.

League One

Bournemouth (A) 1st February 2006

Another game against Bournemouth this time away from home and in the league and Bristol City are hoping for a repeat of the last game in which they won 4-1. So the game gets underway and there are a few chances at either end, but its Heffernan who strikes first, unfortunately however it is dissallowed for offside. The first half ends 0-0. The second half gets underway and after only 4 minutes Bournemouth get a penalty and slot it it home. Bristols hopes of a late equaliser are dashed as Bournemouth score a screamer to make it 2-0.

Bournemouth 2 Bristol C 0

MOM: Trond Andersen 8(Bristol C)

ATT: 9652

So another defeat for Bristol to end the session and things are not looking good for a playoff spot this season. But still the chance of an LDV Vans cup win.
