Stick with 2012 or get 2013?

Recommended Posts

Im hearing horror stories about a whole load of issues regarding FM 2013. I don't wanna fork out money for a product that Im gonna have to trawl the internet for fixes and submit bug reports etc. Some people saying to stick with 12 and just update the database and that. What do you guys think. What are the major benefits of getting the new version?

I will fully endorse FM13 as the superior game but there is no sense in buying it if you are still enjoying a save on FM12. If you can pick up a discounted copy & have the spare cash then it's worth buying, if you do not enjoy it then you've not exactly wasted fortune.

Try the demo. There is nothing else anyone can really recommend. The opinions will always be from one extreme to the other, the horror stories way overblown and the glowing endorsements lacking in critical thought. The demo has the updated ME and gives you a fair representation so you can make your own mind up.

I actually uninstalled 12 a while ago. I normally wait for a few months after the newest has been released to give time for bugs and crashes etc to get fixed before buying but Im still hearing about major issues with the new one so Im not too sure yet. Whats the major advances with 13 over 12 then?

Try the free Demo and judge for yourself. For all those with issues about the game , there are lots more loving it, so make your own mind up after playing the Demo.

The demo is save game compatible, I know that much, but is the demo with the updated transfers etc?

This - the game imo is well worth it and the best incarnation - none of the bugs reported are game threatening and now all the updates have been released you wont have a problem

Been wondering the same too...

Still playing FM12 but even with all the negativity around FM13 (apparently rather justified, even ignoring the most vicious ranters) I've been tempted to give it a try...

In fairness what bugs me the most isn't the erratic ME... it's the fact (and I think we can safely use such a word) AI squad building, transfers and development haven't been improved enough, if at all.

Throw into the mix a cumbersome GUI and some minor quirks, and I still think I'm doing the right thing by resisting the urge to buy FM13 even at a relatively reduced price.

Maybe when/if it'll be 10 quids or so I'll give in and get it. Otherwise I simply haven't seen/read enough to convince me the game isn't a whole lot more than a pimped-up data update with a ME still in beta-test phase.

As said, I wouldn't mind the latter... after all every 3D ME has been some sort of work in progress anyway... but if the core dynamics of the game are still desperately showing their age and their limits, I see no reason to suffer through a confusing and frustrating matchday experience.

Honestly if the most difficult parts of the game come from the usual "psychotic mood swings" and the more recent "TC-ME lottery", while bossing the transfer market is still ludicrously easy, especially after just a couple of seasons, I don't see much point in labouring through dissertations about tactical approach et similia.

Just hang on for one season, then go nuts on all the free agents/Bosman players, sit back and enjoy the AI clubs self-destructing courtesy of absurd appointments and signings.

But if the demo is indeed updated, it's maybe time to give it another shot...

Seems a lot faster too :)

really? i mean i didnt make a speedcheck but my gut would say that 12 is like 150 times faster than 13...

and to the OP

really its the same game, none of the features added in FM13 really have any impact on the game..

the new training is just.. its not better or worse from 12, its just different, but its not a huge factor that makes the game better..

director of football.. huge joke... guy is useless

classic mode.. well if you dont miss it in 12, theres nothing to miss

taxes added to the game... well also whatever.. only raised some bugs here and there... doesnt impact the game experience a bit...

Transfer AI pretty much as bad as 12, nothing done here

wouldnt recommand buying 13, maybe off a -75% sale or something... but really nothing changed overall

This was my biggest concern with FM13 since I remember FM11 and FM12 both had woeful AI squad management - making long term games pointless since the challenge was gone after 15 - 20 seasons.

When FM13 was released I spent around 2 or 3 months working on a custom database that was designed to help the AI develop its players much more efficiently. The database consisted of youth and academy leagues playing in secondary leagues - the theory being the AI youth and fringe players would develop faster by being exposed to competitive football instead of rotting in the reserves.

Unfortunately editor bugs and half-baked features caused me to abandon the project as several issues arose that couldn't be resolved with this version of FM.

So I eventually started a normal save several weeks ago and have to say after 21 seasons AI clubs in FM13 offer a much better challenge than they did at the same stage in FM12. Its still not perfect but the challenge is there at the very top if you have a moderate amount of leagues set as playable throughout Europe. I have the top 6 European leagues playable and there are about 20 AI clubs throughout Europe that offer a stiffer challenge than they did in previous versions.

The rest of the teams/leagues are still pretty easy to compete against though, but at least the top end of the game is an improvement.

I think the improvement in challenge is more down to better player development and less exploitable match engine loopholes rather than better AI transfer policy, but at least its a step in the right direction. Hopefully FM14 will continue in that vein so we don't have to spend months making tougher custom DB's, or playing with artificial constraints and self-imposed rules on ourselves just to get a challenge from this game.

This was the first time I'd bought the next year's version (first time I've had a computer powerful enough to let me) and once I'd got used to the new interface and training system and got over how chuffing hard I found it to start with (and after xmas) I don't think it's all that different from 12 in terms of the key elements - sure there's some cosmetic additions, but in terms of the nitty gritty.

I think I may go back to purchasing every 2 or so years and buying well after release date in future.

But everyone I'm sure will have their own opinion and your take on the game may be very different from mine.

So, in conclusion - dunno.

Get FM13 now as it's as fully patched as it's going to be and discounted pretty much everywhere. Play it through until FM14 is fully patched and discounted about this time next year, then get that.

Rinse and repeat for a cheaper, better performing release.

FM13 is a lot tougher but it's a no brainer to choose cos it's far superior to 12. More to work at and much improved 3d match engine are worth it on their own. It's not perfect by any means and wont be until the code is completely re-written and that will only happen when more users have a mega-powerful PC which in time will be the case as prices tumble. The downside of that is I can see the modification/customising market becoming far more difficult or disappearing and that's an essential part of the current game which will often handle mods from FM2010 onwards !

Depends how you like playing. If you want to take a smaller club to major success you are going to struggle and might quit the game in frustration. If you play with a bigger club then you have a better shot at succeeding. As realistic as that sounds, I still prefer the old FM world where you could win with just about anyone.

Personally i am back playing 12 after 3 seasons of 13 . i just was not getting any enjoyment from it as it all seemed too random but that is my opinion . I know loads of other players love 13 .

The only way is to either get the demo and try it or buy the full game if its cheap somewhere then make your own choice.
