Playing away games

Recommended Posts

Does anyone else find it difficult to win away games. In my Arsenal career if went through the fixtures at the end of the season to review the results and noticed that I only managed 5 away wins in the premier league. I drew 10 and lost the other 4. (Finished 4th at the end of the season).

In the next season I noticed again that I couldn't win away games and only managed to beat teams like QPR and reading by a 1 goal margain, but any team above the bottom 5 I would struggle to draw. I tried using different tactics, different match preperation and putting the team into counter atacking but nothing seemed to work..

How do you guys play in away games and what tactics do you use?

I play exactly the same way home and away and don't think there is a large difference. When I play away the opponents are more aggressive and push higher up, so my attacking tactic is risky, but at the same time I get all the space I want so that's okay. The challenge is more about the apparent lack of confidence when playing away - more hesitation, more errors, less decisive attacking play. If you have stronger players that's not going to be a huge problem, so I guess Arsenal in fourth place is where you should be at the end of a season. My biggest victories have been away - 9-0 iirc.

I also play the same home and away. when playing away I usually tightly mark, close down and show on weaker foot their striker(s) and any other attacking players e.g. wingers attacking midfielders. I play standard home and away and only go to attacking if needs be my tactics work for me as in March I have only lost 1 away game in the premier league to liverpool and I am Ipswich!

Just played Barca in the Nou Camp, in 2024. Didn't give a pre-match team talk. We were losing 1-0 at half-time, their worst player scored from a set piece (a talented 18 year old LB) right place at the right time, and bundled it home. At half time I would normally rage at my players for losing, but this was a big European fixture, and we're in the g*ddamn Nou Camp! I told the players they could now go out and play without pressure.

Turned it around, to win 2-1, which is a great result away, first leg of a CL fixture.

You have to handle home and away matches slightly differently until your team reaches a high level, IMO. A midtable team needs to be a lot more cautious away from home, a bottom side, straight defensive. Try to play your more experienced, "cool heads", as opposed to giving youngsters a go, and take the pressure off every now and again, away from home.

I've had 95+ points the last three seasons, so its definitely do-able.
