Defending from Long Goal Kicks

Recommended Posts

Hi All!

I keep conceding every one or two matches from the same problem - a long goal kick which just gets headed on by the opposition and a pacey striker picks it up and smashes it past my keeper. What I don't get, is that my CBs are all above 6 foot, and pretty good at heading. For the life of me, I can't work out how to stop this from happening, and it's so frustrating domination possession and having 3x the amount of shots, to lose from two lumped up balls!!

I'm using a 4-3-1-2 tactic, does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks :)

Could you give more details? Like what kind of role do you give to your squad? What kind of setting? What is the shouts that you normally use? Without that details, I don't think we can't help you ( or we can help but I'm not sure it will applicable for your team)

You have a CM (d) which is eliminate one of the possible problem. Now the question is, when the goals happen where is your CD? From what I read the goals happen like this:

Opponent team GK catch the ball. He use a long goal kick. Opponent player (can be a AMC/ST/MC/etc) and your CD fight for the ball. Your CD lose the possession a. The ball running free and then the opponent ST took the ball, run like Speedy Gonzales and score? Is that right?

You can try play deeper, hoping that your CM will fight for the ball and your CD will be ready to closing the ST or steal the ball before the ST can touch it.

Try check your CD positioning, anticipation and (probably) bravery. Those three could affect the aerial duel (beside jumping and heights)

YOu might want to consider a DM or to split your DC's for stopper and cover. This way one will move to intercept (look for acceleration, positioning and jumping (not height) and the other will stay back.

Another issue might be where your defence line is. It sounds as though it might be a little high.

Thank you for all your replies, I've seemed to have been able to sort out the issue by using a BWM instead of a defending CM. My defensive line is very high, but it seems my CBs don't initially get drawn to the first ball if a BWM is being played.

Thank you all for your help :)
