Great work to win the league, draw obviously tough in the CL but there aren't gonna be many easy games at this stage!

Very true.

Easily done title.

Thanks!

Pleased to see you scrape through and lift the MLS Cup :)

Decent offer from Shakhtar- were you not tempted?

Cheers :) The offer was nice, but since I've already been at Metalist in the Ukrainian top league, I wasn't really too tempted.

No President's Trophy jinx for you. ;)

Take that, Canucks!

man whats with your intake and defenders ? You seem to be getting mainly good defenders. Hopefully the next one gives you some world class attackers. Have you upgraded your junior coaching and youth recruitment ?

Yeah, my intake is defender heavy, but I've been able to grab top attacking players in the Superdraft. I haven't upgraded junior coaching or recruitment yet because my Board hasn't given me the offers for those yet unfortunately.

2018 MLS Superdraft and Supplemental Draft

Vancouver Whitecaps FC - Major League Soccer

MLS Superdraft

1st Round

2nd Round

MLS Supplemental Draft

I waived all my draft picks in the Supplemental Draft as there was no way any players left would make my squad.

Draft Thoughts

I wanted Tim Powers in this draft. Otherwise, it was a fairly weak year.

Nice drafts and do you have any players, that have developed to become worthy of DP contracts ?

I have a few players that may warrant DP contracts somewhere, just not with me. I have them on long term Senior level contracts. My DP players were ones from Europe.

A brilliant season! Can I see the top two picks?

1st Pick - Real Salt Lake

2nd Pick - Toronto FC

Love that statement... says it all.

Yep :)

Sounds like only European footballer's are worthy of DP contracts ?

Sounds like if an agent pushes for one you will sell or trade the player ?

What are the requirements you use for someone to warrant a DP contract in your team ?

No, that's not what I'm saying at all. DP contracts were brought in when David Beckham began his career with Los Angeles. It's also why this has become known as the Beckham Rule. Historically, non-North American players have dominated DP contracts specifically because Canadian and American associations were growing. They are beginning to have homegrown DP players now. To say only European players are worthy of DP contracts does a disservice to the growth of a domestic league and calibre of player.

I haven't had a domestic player as of yet have an agent push for a DP contract. Unfortunately, FM does agents incorrectly for MLS. Agents do not get fees from the club. Instead, they get a fixed percentage of the contract their player receives. The way agents are right now in FM would land people in jail in real life.

As for requirements, again that is dependent on each individual manager. There would be a plethora of factors that could determine whether a player should have a DP contract. For example, my Director of Football wanted to sign David Silva to a DP contract. He's a great player; however, I can't use him. Therefore, it makes no sense. It will depend on position required, legth of contract, age of player, etc. Everyone is different.

Pre-Season Thoughts

The pre-season went well. We also played the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions League Quarter Final match against Monterrey. I'll do a full update at the end of the month. We are a young squad. The media even made a big deal that our MLS Cup win was on with an average age of 24 years old, stating that we "won with kids." Let's hope we can do it again!

Nice to see you got Bill Hamid! Team is looking good. Nice new DP... little old for my taste, hopefully he'll give you 5 years, hope you got him on a free transfer

Yeah, Hamid should be good cover for my young goalkeeper who has taken the top spot from last year. Garcia should last for a while as a DP. Got him on a free so not too worried.

Late congratulations on the cup success :D

Noticed from your time in America is that this FM more 'reputable' players are more intersted in joining the MLS on this FM, as Garcia is another example joining at a not so bad age. Previous FMs you could never attract someone like that :(

The drafts this year have been poor from other sides :( Lewis though for you looks like he could develop in to a real top player :)

Good luck for the new season.

He's more of an experienced backup. Using him for mentoring as well.

I've never had a problem signing quality players to the MLS in any year of FM. I remember even getting a still very good Jermaine Defoe in FM'11. Didn't even need a DP contract for him. Lewis could be a good find. He's young though, so probably won't see any first team time this year.

Brilliant transfers again. Do you plan on managing Canada?

If the current guy ever steps down! :) Actually, Canada has fared well under current management. They made it to the final of the Gold Cup, but lost. The U-20s won the CONCACAF U-20 championship though, so hopefully the youth coming through will be good. If the current manager ever steps down, I'll likely apply.

Well done on the trophies Cerud.

Thanks, Nobby

February-March 2018 Update

200px-Vancouver_Whitecaps_FC_logo.svg.png

Vancouver Whitecaps FC - Major League Soccer

The Matches

fixt.png

7 February 2018 - CF Monterrey - Home - 2-0 Win

CONCACAF Champions League - Attendance - 20,557

Monterrey came to Vancouver and we sent them home crying. We go into the second leg with a 2 goal lead in the stage, thanks to last minute heroics by D'Oliveira.

10 March 2018 - D.C. United - Home - 3-0 Win

MLS Regular Season - Attendance - 20,220

The first match of the regular season saw D.C. United come to BC Place. I've bumped up Rowe to a starting striker position and he's begun well with a goal. Hill also got a debut league goal.

14 March 2018 - CF Monterrey - Away - 3-1 Win

CONCACAF Champions League - Attendance - 30,449

I was hoping that the 2 goal lead we had would be enough to hold off the Monterrey fight back. It was all for naught as we continued our fantastic form. We finished at a commanding 5-1 lead on aggregate and surprised many that we were able to beat the defending champions.

17 March 2018 - Philadelphia Union - Away - 1-1 Tie

MLS Regular Season - Attendance - 17,990

Disappointing. The Union took a first half lead as we came out of the gate asleep, comatose, or somehow other disaffected. We were able to pull back and grab a tie, but a red card given to Evson in the 67th minute took us down to 10 men, making any sort of fight back difficult.

25 March 2018 - FC Dallas - Home - 0-1 Loss

MLS Regular Season - Attendance - 20,179

Shots for us: 18. Shots for them: 1. Goals for us: 0. Goals for them: 1. Sometimes football is cruel.

CONCACAF Champions League

20625966.png

We are the only MLS side left. We are up against difficult competition yet again. Chivas is a top Mexican club, but hopefully we can do to them what we did to Monterrey.

The Standings

standb.png

Not the greatest month. We looked good in the Champions League but the league is another story. Here's hoping that we can bounce back in April.

April 2018 Update

200px-Vancouver_Whitecaps_FC_logo.svg.png

Vancouver Whitecaps FC - Major League Soccer

The Matches

fixdy.png

1 April 2018 - Chivas USA - Away - 3-0 Win

MLS Regular Season - Attendance - 17,607

The Chivas USA match gave us an opportunity to grab some needed points. A solid effort from the boys, resulting in three quality goals.

4 April 2018 - CD Guadalajara - Away - 1-0 Win

CONCACAF Champions League - Attendance - 33,201

I came into this match expecting a difficult match again against one of the strongest North American clubs there is, but I was happy in how we played. It was a tough match. D'Oliveira gave us a brilliant goal in the 73rd minute, staying on his feet in the box on a hard challenge and putting in behind the goalkeeper. Puts us in a good position going home.

7 April 2018 - New York Red Bulls - Home - 4-0 Win

MLS Regular Season - Attendance - 20,245

Herrick grabbed his first ever senior level goal on what was a commanding display against the Red Bulls.

11 April 2018 - CD Guadalajara - Home - 0-1p Loss

CONCACAF Champions League - Attendance - 21,000

It's disheartening to lose such a match in front of your home fans; however, the boys can hold their heads up high in how they played. This was a battle and brilliant to watch. Both sides came to play and it showed in the stunning chances and great saves. Extra time solved nothing, so it took penalties for Chivas to pull ahead and knock us out. Penalties were 4-5p in favour of Chivas. So ends our Champions League run.

14 April 2018 - Chivas USA - Home - 3-1 Win

MLS Regular Season - Attendance - 20,167

Herrick continues to have a breakout month. He grabbed his second goal and assisted on another in a strong home crowd display.

18 April 2018 - Seattle Sounders FC - Away - 4-0 Win

MLS Regular Season - Attendance - 37,138

Cascadia Cup Match

Our first Cascadia Cup match of the season and we have begun to defend our regional title in style. Four goals from four different players is always something I enjoy watching.

21 April 2018 - San Jose Earthquakes - Home - 0-0 Draw

MLS Regular Season - Attendance - 20,176

We were the dominating squad, but just couldn't break through on goal. Shots were 12-1 in our favour.

25 April 2018 - FC Edmonton - Away - 4-1 Win

Amway Canadian Championship - Attendance - 3,949

I had an early scare as FC Edmonton scored in the 1st minute, but we fought back and take a commanding lead back home for the second leg.

28 April 2018 - FC Dallas - Awat - 2-2 Tie

MLS Regular Season - Attendance - 11,741

Every time we took a lead, we would end up doing something stupid to allow FC Dallas back into the match. This is a game that we should have won but let slip away.

Amway Canadian Championship

canv.png

The first match should finish off our competition and give us an easy berth into the final.

The Standings

standy.png

A much better month from us. We have moved into 2nd place overall and in our conference as well. We haven't played Portland yet and those are always good matches, being that they are rivals. I've been impressed in how the youth contingent of the squad has stepped up. They are playing very well when they are called into play.

Awards

Player of the Month - Michael D'Oliveira - 1st Place

Three-Peat for Whitecaps in Canadian Championship

Yesterday's match in BMO Field in Toronto marked Vancouver's third Amway Canadian Championship in a row. Cerud, the manager for the last two championships, led the club through a mostly simple campaign. Toronto FC beat Montreal in route to the final.

May 2018 Update

200px-Vancouver_Whitecaps_FC_logo.svg.png

Vancouver Whitecaps FC - Major League Soccer

The Matches

fixg.png

2 May 2018 - FC Edmonton - Home - 5-0 Win

Amway Canadian Championship - Attendance - 15,039

We finished up the semi final against FC Edmonton at home with a strong five goal flourish. I expected a strong win given that we play in a higher level league and the squad didn't disappoint. It was also Teibert's first match back after a lengthy injury.

6 May 2018 - Colorado Rapids - Home - 3-0 Win

MLS Regular Season - Attendance - 20,154

Teibert continued his strong performances after returning from his injury. He led the line in what turned out to be a good win against Western Conference opposition.

12 May 2018 - Montreal Impact - Home - 0-0 Draw

MLS Regular Season - Attendance - 20,609

Disappointing match. Montreal is having a horrible time this year and we should have won.

16 May 2018 - Toronto FC - Home - 3-0 Win

Amway Canadian Championship - Attendance - 21,000

The first leg of the final puts us in a good position going back to Toronto. Good game, can't complain.

19 May 2018 - Seattle Sounders FC - Home - 3-0 Win

MLS Regular Season - Attendance - 21,000

Cascadia Cup Match

Another Cascadia Cup match and another win. Sessegnon is not getting the number of matches that he used to, but he started great, grabbing a brace.

26 May 2018 - San Jose Earthquakes - Away - 0-1 Win

MLS Regular Season - Attendance - 16,500

A bad beginning to the match as Leverón got sent off in the 4th minute on a violent challenge. We were forced to become a bit more defensive and were lucky to grab a goal off a corner kick.

30 April 2018 - Toronto FC - Away - 4-2 Win

Amway Canadian Championship - Attendance - 21,589

That was a Jekyll and Hyde performance! The first half was horrible as Toronto got 2 goals, pulling to within 1 on aggregate. We went into the locker room where I laid out case. We have 45 minutes to stem the flow and to mount a serious challenge. And did we ever! The boys came out flying with four unanswered goals and another Voyageur's Cup in the Amway Canadian Championship!

Amway Canadian Championship

cannt.png

We win the Amway Canadian Championship 7-2 on aggregate, the third in a row for the club and second for me.

The Standings

standaz.png

We are finally on top of the conference and league. The Canadian Championship is ours and we have booked our place back into the CONCACAF Champions League. Things are looking good!

You finally hit back form.Olivera and Rowe seem like good players.

Any player wants a big wage increase yet ?

D'Oliveira has been amazing for me over the past couple seasons, a leader of the front line. Rowe is stepping up as well and definitely looks to be complimentary to D'Oliveira.

I've had a few players looking for bigger salaries, namely D'Oliveira and Cisneros, my first choice right winger. I gave D'Oliveira an increased contract, but also got him to a long term deal that should hold him at the club for a while. I'm holding off on Cisneros for now, but he's been great so I'll probably give him an increase as he does deserve it.

Has anyone become a world-class player yet or on their way to becoming one ?

Anybody asking for a move to a bigger club ?

Not yet, no. I doubt I'd see a player become one from a MLS club simply because the league is not a big as others in the world. No one has asked to move to a bigger club, but I've also been able to grow Vancouver. We have grown in stature not only in MLS, but also in North America. I think that's helped to some degree.

Real Salt Lake were unable to stop us from cutting our swath through the league. Even in away games, we normally dominate the play and this match was no different.

We're running into problems with all of the international call ups for friendlies and the World Cup that's about to start. My squad rotation currently is solely based on what players are left and them trying to figure something out.

16 June 2018 - Real Salt Lake - Home - 4-0 Win

MLS Regular Season - Attendance - 20,275

We just played them, but now we're at home. The result was still the same, but we added a few more goals in the process.

20 June 2018 - Houston Dynamo - Home - 3-1 Win

MLS Regular Season - Attendance - 20,285

We have a few players returning from international play, which makes my job a lot easier. A good match all around.

23 June 2018 - Los Angeles Galaxy - Away - 2-1 Win

MLS Regular Season - Attendance - 17,221

The Galaxy have struggled this year. They almost got the tie from us, but Rowe came off the bench to grab us the late winner with four minutes left.

The Standings

standgg.png

We had a few games cancelled and rescheduled as the United States made it out of the group stage of the World Cup. In the league, we are once again in a great position. So long as we keep this pace up, we should be able to defend our title with little problem.

Awesome! Hope the Costa Rican club produce some gems...

I've had luck finding players in Jamaica. Hopefully, I can find some on the mainland as well :)

Slow start to the season but really hitting your stride now.
Looks like your flying now

The league is going well. Thanks guys!

Whitecaps Midfielder Becomes Canadian Citizen

In what is being considered a potential coup for the Canadian National Soccer Team, Carlos Ernesto Cisneros has become a Canadian citizen, paving the way for him to play for Canada in another couple years. Cisneros, a fixture on the Vancouver Whitecaps squad, he said that he is looking forward to one day playing for his adoptive country.

Is he good enough for mexico ?

Cisneros is great, but at looking at the Mexican national side, they have a couple very strong right wingers. He would have a hard time breaking into Mexico.

Whitecaps Dominate All-Star Picks

The Vancouver Whitecaps have eight players picked for the MLS Pepsi All-Star match, including Aly Cissokho, Ged Lewis, Adam Hill, Gershon Koffie, Russell Teibert, Carlos Ernesto Cisneros, and Michael D'Oliveira, and Javi García.

The All-Star match, played against English club, Fulham, was a disappointment for the North American league. Fulham won the match 4-1.

The Matches

fixt.png

1 July 2018 - Portland Timbers - Away - 3-1 Win

MLS Regular Season - Attendance - 18,608

Cascadia Cup Match

Our second match against Portland occurs as they are having issues with winning. We weren't about to help them. A simple match which puts us far ahead of our Cascadia rivals.

11 July 2018 - Toronto FC - Away - 1-1 Tie

MLS Regular Season - Attendance - 21,181

We went into Toronto, hoping to beat our Canadian rivals, but it wasn't meant to be. It was kind of a let off game, and I told the boys as much.

14 July 2018 - San Jose Earthquakes - Home - 2-0 Win

MLS Regular Season - Attendance - 20,150

We continue our undefeated run with two first half goals.

16 July 2018 - Chivas USA - Away - 4-0 Win

MLS Regular Season - Attendance - 12,256

Sessegnon grabbed a hattrick on our way to a win that has to damage Chivas USA's hopes.

18 July 2018 - Galatasaray SK - Home - 5-0 Win

MLS Regular Season - Attendance - 7,112

Galatasaray is our parent club and they decided to play us for their pre-season warm up. I think we didn't do them any favours as we absolutely dominated the play and send them back to Turkey crying.

21 July 2018 - Portland Timbers - Away - 3-0 Win

MLS Regular Season - Attendance - 18,628

Cascadia Cup Match

Petersen has made himself a starter with his performances. Very happy with our 2017 top draft pick.

28 July 2018 - Colorado Rapids - Home - 3-0 Win

MLS Regular Season - Attendance - 20,141

This match could have easily been 7-0 or even 10-0. Colorado was running scared and barely touched the ball all match.

The Standings

standw.png

I'm very confident that we will top the league in points again for the second year in a row. We have the CONCACAF Champions League starting in August again and I have Monterrey and El Salvadorian club La Firpo in my group. Monterrey was easy for us last year, but I bet they've learned.

I was also trying to resign Cissokho, my leftback, as his contract was expiring and other places were trying to grab him on a free for the end of the season. Then, I remembered he had a clause in his current contract where if he played 20 matches in the final year of the contract, he was automatically signed for an additional year. Good, because he was asking for too much. Now, I get him for the next year at the same wages!

The Awards

Player of the Month - Carlos Petersen - 1st Place

Good to see a North American career on here, congrats on the solid results so far with Vancouver. As a Timbers fan I have to wish you nothing but painful losses however:P

And as a Timbers fan, I would expect nothing less :D I'm a Vancouver fans myself, but always love a good rivalry. Thanks for the post and hope you continue reading!

Cerud Marks 100 Matches in Vancouver

The Vancouver Whitecaps boss has passed a milestone that not many sports managers get to realize, the 100 game mark for a club. The current season has seen a repeat of fortunes under Cerud. However, there is increasing speculation on whether the manager will be back next season. Cerud's contract expires at the end of the current season. It was revealed a few months back on a blog sit that talks had deteriorated between manager and club on a contract extension. Neither side has broached the subject since.

Vancouver Whitecaps FC - Major League Soccer

The Matches

fixu.png

1 August 2018 - CD Luis Angel Firpo - Away - 3-0 Win

CONCACAF Champions League - Attendance - 928

Our El Salvadorian competition in the Champions League were no match for us. This was a simple way to begin the new campaign.

4 August 2018 - New England Revolution - Away - 2-1 Win

MLS Regular Season - Attendance - 9,300

The Revolution gave us a few problems, but a brace from Rowe silenced them.

8 August 2018 - Los Angeles Galaxy - Home - 4-0 Win

MLS Regular Season - Attendance - 20,303

How the mighty have fallen. The Galaxy are shadows of their former selves. This win also secured us a playoff spot for the MLS Cup at the end of the regular season.

15 August 2018 - FC Dallas - Home - 1-1 Tie

MLS Regular Season - Attendance - 20,152

Seriously?!?! In the MLS, you are allowed a 30 player roster. I had 16 players called to international duty. And then 2 players dropped injured in this match. How I pulled off a tie, I'll never know. It's insane that this match wasn't rescheduled in the first place!

19 August 2018 - Columbus Crew - Away - 2-0 Win

MLS Regular Season - Attendance - 11,552

So that's how I play when I can actually us my players. A much better game after that fiasco at home to Dallas.

22 August 2018 - CF Monterrey - Home - 0-1 Loss

MLS Regular Season - Attendance - 18,926

This was a match where either club could have won. Both played well; unfortunately, it just wasn't our day.

CONCACAF Champions League

79126048.png

We have our work cut out for us if we hope to qualify out of our group. Still a chance.

The Standings

standg.png

We've now qualified for the semi final of the Western Conference, skipping the wild card spots. We're likely going to best our points haul from last season as well. We picked up an injury in Cissokho, right after I got his contract taken care of. Looking like he's out for the rest of the regular season for sure. Hopefully, he should make a return for the playoffs.
