I've had a few goes at running a 'update' on here, none to successful in all honesty... in part due to me finding it hard to report on FM as I like to play the game rather than report! And in part (linked to that) the fact that I only really ever start updates once im 2-3 seasons in to a game... this way I know its something ill likely continue. However that also has its pitfalls, given that I generally forget to make notes and as such am relying on in game data and memory to recall a season, which is a challenge and frustrating when trying to put across my emotion. Our most notable deal was to snag Darren Gribben on loan from Arbroath, whilst Kevin Kerr signed for free and was instantly made team captain. Our season could pretty much be summed up by the happenings within the opening months, as early cup exits at the hands of Falkirk 0-1 (League Cup 1st Rd) and Partick 1-2 (Challenge Cup 2nd Rd) sandwiched an opening day league defeat to the hands of Rangers, 1-2 at Ibrox. Our first league win came in our next outing at home to Montrose, but that would be that and 3 further losses left us afoot the table at the end of September. Form would improve slightly after that as we progressed to the Scottish Cup 3rd round with a 3-2 win at home to Highland League Huntly and a rousing 5-2 romp over Stirling also boosted hopes of a revival in league fortunes. However a 8pt from 12 run would be tempered by a 2pt from 15 run straight after, including the exit from our last cup hope in the 3rd rd of the Scottish Cup to Arbroath 1-2. Stirling and Annan would be on the end of 4-0 and 5-3 dippings respectively, but those results epitomised our season, as we were unable to sustain any sort of run. A 2-2 draw at home to Rangers in our last meeting with the giants was a night to remember at Broadwood but a final tally of 10 wins was never going to be enough to touch the top 4 and we had to settle for a comfortable (yet firmly adrift of anything exciting) 6th place. Review - No money, no hope... well that's how it normally goes. Once again we had to delve into the bargain bin to put a squad together, however this time a few gems could be found as the bigger clubs (notably Rangers) decided to shed their fringe talent as all of Scottish football continued to tighten its belt. A new 3 year contract was signed and a meagre £500 added to the wage budget allowed us to bring in 7 new faces as we also cut our cloth by releasing 20+ players from the club. Excitingly ex-Rangers youngsters Kal Naismith and Charlie Telfer were woo'ed to Clyde as a new fresh look came to Broadwood for another crack at leaping out of the doldrums. Cup runs again were short lived, however we did pull off a giant killing at Hibernian by knocking out the SPL side in the League Cup. This proved to be invaluable as a juicy away draw at Celtic gave us enough money to budget out the season, albeit at the cost of a 4-1 dinging. In the league we started out a little slowly with draws, but then once a minor injury crisis was over we were able to put our foot down and take a hold of a division that no one else fancied. We hit 4 or more goals in a game 9 times, including a run of 3 wins that saw us hit 12 goals to cap a 5 game winning streak. Promotion and the title wasn't too far off and with 6 to play we wrapped up both with an impressive 4-2 win over Peterhead, with Telfer scoring 3. We kept our foot on the gas till the end, scoring 86 goals and wrapping up the title with a 20pt margin. Review - Back into the Second Division and although the standard of football is probably barely a little better than the 3rd, its important that we start well and build on the confidence of our title last term. Again we hit the free transfer market and acquire some solid players to give us a more rounded looking squad. All in all though, most of last years faces return at the higher level. Cups, well its almost deja'vu in the League Cup, a SPL scalp (this time Inverness 2-0) in the 2nd round, followed by a defeat at Celtic in the 3rd round. A little progress in the Scottish Cup saw us travel to another SPL team as Dundee Utd put paid to any more giant killing heroics in a 2-0 triumph. The league itself saw us remain undefeated until the beginning of October and a loss at East Fife. We follow that with our first home loss against Cowdenbeath as the wheels started to look shaky. However that ignited an 8 game winning streak in the league (12 games total undefeated) as we stretched out a double digit advantage over our only real challengers Airdrie United. 1pt from 2 away games followed and Airdrie closed the gap, however 5 more wins and then a 1-1 home draw with said rivals left us needing just 6 points to claim promotion. Half the job was done in a 3-1 win at Montrose (that confirmed their relegation), before we stumbled to a draw at home to Forfar as the pressure of trying to clinch the unthinkable got to the players. We then lost again, this time at Brechin but by the time the players had reached the dressing room, news filtered in that Airdrie had lost and we had been crowned Champions of the Second Division. The title was presented to the players on the final day of the season as a bumper crowd enjoyed a 3-0 waltz over East Fife and plenty of celebrations too. Perhaps more intriguing is the promotion of 16 year old Andrew Maxwell into the full time setup, as the local born midfielder will get a chance to show his talents and start his journey on route to becoming a Clyde legend (or so I hope!). Incredibly we start the season with a bang, 4 wins from 4 in the league and progression in the cups gave me hope that we could repeat what Rangers had just done and that's climb straight up to the SPL without stopping. However things would prove tougher than first thought as our small squad and still having a gaggle of players on part time contracts (including all staff members) meant that we were punching above our weight and soon got found out. Infact after those 4 wins, we would only go on to collect 9 more from the remaining 32 league games. Fortunately we were never in relegation trouble, as not only did we collect 8 draws to bolster our points tally, but Morton, Raith and Hamilton never really put up a run of results to draw either of them close to us, as we ended up marooned in 7th place. The cups again proved to be little solace. We did reach the Quarter Finals of the Challenge Cup only to crash out 1-4 at home to Queen of the South. Our League Cup run ended at the 2nd round stage with a loss at Rangers, whilst the Old Firm's other half came to Broadwood to dump us out of the Scottish Cup at the 4th round stage infront of our biggest crowd of the year. We ended the season with a miserable run of 6 defeats from 7 on the field, but it was the off-field turmoil that caused more concern as debts of nearly £500,000 are struggling to be serviced and with 6 players due out of contract and no money in the pot for renewals, 2016/17 could be the toughest yet. A few weeks after the season had finished and I was looking towards a summer revamp, the board decided to announce that the club would be turning semi-professional again and that we could only offer part time contracts. It was a kick in the teeth that no one expected and the knock on effect was huge. First up all my staff left, some I didn't mind, but my coaching team all wanted a full time deal and by the end of June I was all alone (bar the club directors!). Alongside that key players also baulked at any contract advances and 5 important players left, alongside this a rebellion started amongst those left at the club and anyone 'decent' (namely Telfer, Naismith and Peterson) all decided there and then that this was their last year at the club unless I took the team to the SPL (nae chance). To compound matters, the fans pulled the plug as well, as we lost a quarter of season ticket sales... barely hitting 900 as even the locals knew what to expect. So with the odds against us, I signed up a few part timers to bolster the numbers, called up a few kids who were no where near ready and went into the season on a wing and a prayer. Unsurprisingly we opened up with 4 straight defeats and I was looking at being castoff from the group. To the teams credit we actually fought back and over the winter period we would collect an astonishing 7 wins and 2 draws from 11 games, that put us into relative mid table safety. Id like to mention our 3-0 win over Partick and a pair of wins over Hamilton in this run, at this point. However as with all highs, come the lows and 1pt from 6 games saw us dragged back into a relegation dogfight that included pretty much the bottom half of the league. We would manage a last minute 1-0 win at Tannadice as Champions Elect Dundee United got a scare, but 5 more straight defeats after that, including a cruicial 2-4 home trotting by Partick put us in a last day survival battle. Joint on points but with a slightly better goal difference, we knew that a win at home to Airdrie would give us a second chance at survival by putting us in the playoffs. IF Cowdenbeath bettered our result, then we would wave goodbye to the division without stopping. A decent crowd turned up and the nerves were in the air as at half time we trailed by a goal and news from the 'Beath was that they were hanging on for a point. Incredibly Kal Naismith would prove to be the hero of the hour (or last 10 minutes) as he rattled home goals in the 80th and 87th minutes to seal the win, as we hung on to relegate Scottish Cup semi finalists Cowdenbeath (who went on to draw 1-1 and finish 2pts adrift). Into the playoffs then and we wound up with the toughest test, Raith Rovers. (The other semi final being Stirling and Forfar Athletic). Away from home we nicked a 1-1 draw and felt confident for the return game. Back at Broadwood the atmosphere was as electric as you could get and although we led 1-0, it required a late equaliser to force a 2-2 draw and extra time. Neither team twisted in the added 30, so we went to penalties and with Raith being perfect, we needed to match them.... unfortunately for us, our Swedish winger Peterson who so impressed in his debut year, would loft his penalty way over the bar and send us down. A cruel end to a bitter year. The board had to reign in the clubs financial situation and to do that, they slashed our weekly wage budget by £10,000. Now I understand having to tighten our belts, but this left us with the smaller budget we have ever worked under and also a situation where by we were unable to sign anyone... I mean playing for £25 a week is hardly enticing now is it! So without being able to add any new players we had to manage with what we had. Somehow Telfer and Peterson were persuaded to stay on, but Kal Naismith walked (straight into Falkirk Reserves). But there was no other way to cut it, we had a small, inexperienced squad and needed a little bit more than luck to achieve our goals. Unsurprisingly we started out slowly, nothing notable achieved in the cups so no bonus income from there, we had to make our mark in the league. Cowdenbeath who came down with us last year raced ahead early on as they stuck with the majority of their First Division squad to get them back up. Us on the other hand struggled to find any consistency, until December and bar a couple of blips (Stranraer and Forfar) we would put up 13 wins and 3 draws from 18 games. This surge gave us a shot at overhauling Cowdenbeath and a 1-0 home win over the 'Blue Brazil' pulled us to within 1pt of the lead. Yet we managed to shoot ourselves in the foot with 2 away defeats on the spin at Ayr and Alloa, which consigned us to 2nd place and another go at the playoffs that so cruelly relegated us last season. The playoffs saw us face Alloa in the semi finals and although they had recently beaten us I was confident on putting them back in their place. A goalless first leg at their place wasn't ideal, but we had no qualms at home and pasted them 3-0 to move into the final to face Airdrie from the First Division. Again we went away for the first leg and although we took the lead, we let them back into the tie and eventually lost 1-2. Back home and over 4000 fans turned up in anticipation that we could bounce back to the First Division. All looked well when King bundled home a goal at the end of the first half, however amidst the celebrations the linesman's flag was raised and the goal chalked off. We had to chase things in the 2nd half and although chances fell our way, we were killed off by a sucker punch as Airdrie scored the games only goal to retain their status and ensure we had another year of Second Divison football ahead. Amidst the early season struggles, off the field things changed a little... possibly not for the better, however a local businessman (Andy Cameron) decided to purchase the club and clear the clubs overdraft with a £200,000 loan (to be paid by 2027). This has helped us run at a small profit and the hope is that more funds will be released to rebuild the squad for next season given that 10 players are out of contract this summer. Pre-takeover we were around 300k in the can... fluctuated a bit, but that's probably the amount at the time. The new Chairman put in about 70k iirc and then a loan of 200k, so we pretty much got our bank back in the black... and with such a small wage budget, we have been able to make a little profit and have around 50k I believe in the account at the minute (bolstered by the Airdrie game!) However that financial impetus gained by having a new owner re-finance our over-riding debt, did allow us to put together a squad that looked competitive on paper. We did lose stalwarts in Joe Coll (GK) and George King (DC) who fancied greater challenges, but again Telfer and Peterson re-signed with us, as did a total of 10 players in the summer. The added depth would prove vital as once again the season became a hard slog. One of the best parts about this season was the relegation into our division of Partick Thistle. No longer did the old foe look down on us, as we set out with the same aim.. promotion, as Champions. Things looked promising as we lost just once going into November, including a 2-0 win at Firhill over Thistle. However we would go on to lose 4 more before the new year as we slipped into the playoff pack. That sticky period did throw up one of the greatest days in the clubs recent history as 1500 fans turned up on a chilly December evening to watch us dice up Partick 6-1, as the league leaders got taken down a few pegs by our young-uns. Yet again though we flattered to deceive and start 2019 with 3 straight league losses, a run that left us on the outside looking in. But once again we picked ourselves up and just one further defeat came our way as we picked up 29pts from 36 available, including sealing a memorable quadruple' over Partick for the year with further 3-1 and 4-3 wins. Alas the Jags had the final laugh as we had lost too much ground earlier in the season to make any dent in their lead at the top, so we had to settle for Runners Up again and watch the men from Firhill sail off into the First Division. So back into the playoffs we head and a first leg loss 0-1 at Forfar did little to settle the nerves of the Clyde faithful. Back at Broadwood we needed a very late equaliser from Dean McLean to force extra time. The tie wasn't settled there and off to spot kicks it went. Bad memories came back of a previous playoff defeat from the spot, yet this time we held our nerve and edged through into the Final against a surprising Dumbarton team who snuck into the playoffs on the final day of the regular season. A vital 2-1 win at the Sons' put us in control and back home we took the lead late in the game to all but seal our promotion. Dumbarton had other ideas and a quick reply sent the home crowd back to biting their nails, alas they needn't had worried as we dug out the draw to clinch a 3-2 aggregate win and a spot back in the Scottish First Division. Partnered alongside young starlet Kal Naismith, he helped the club rise up the leagues and grace the First Division after back to back titles. Still belying his age, Chris scored 22 goals in 2 years in the First Division as sadly he was unable to save us in 2016/17 as a debt ravaged club. Persuaded to carry on, he helped us come 2nd twice in our attempt to bounce back to the First Division and in the season just past after playing a mammoth 40 games, his 18 goals would help propel us up once more via the playoffs. In total he would score 93 goals in 216 appearances for the club, almost a 1 in 2 record, a remarkable achievement for a player at the end of his career. After lengthy discussions both parties decided it would be best for Chris to hang up his boots, but his association with Clyde has not ended as after a brief run as U19s Manager, he was given a new contract to be Ally Moist's new No.2 as the pair will continue their journey to get Clyde back into the big time. This year looked to be an exciting one as on the field we would face Aberdeen, a surprise relegation from the SPL left this former giant facing minnows like us. As well as continuing our battles with Partick Thistle. Once again alot of changes occurred with regards to the playing staff. We did get a decent budget but we also lost our Goalkeeper and 3 of our starting back 4, which held up well in the 2nd Division. The season itself got off to a decent start, we went 7 undefeated but only won 2 and as soon as the defeats started to come we found it hard to turn draws into wins, leaving us staring at the inevitable. Away from the league we had a decent year in the Cups, mainly the Challenge Cup where wins over Aberdeen and St Johnstone took us to the Final. A small crowd gathered on a cold November night to see us lose out 0-3 to Livingston, we never got into the game and fell way short of the eventual First Division Champions performance. We also stood up well in the Scottish Cup and looked good for a place in the Quarter Finals after drawing 2nd Division Hamilton at home. However we failed to put them to bed at Broadwood, leaving us with a replay at their ground which we lost and missed out on a potential money spinning Cup Quarter Final tie. Back to the league and surprisingly we ended up embroiled in a relegation battle with Aberdeen and St Johnstone. The latter would end up drifting behind and stare at automatic relegation, whilst us and Aberdeen diced it out for the playoff spot. Crucially for us we would find form at the right time, picking up 4 wins from our final 7 games. Yet we still went into the last game of the season at home to Aberdeen needing not to lose by 5 or more goals to ensure we didnt face the agony of playoff football once more. Fortunately the Dons didn't have enough in their tank to finish us off and we poached a point to finish 8th, crazily just 12pts behind 1st place and also having lost just 12 games, the same amount as SPL bound Livingston. Another point of interest was the return of Kal Naismith in January, who after his release from SPL Falkirk was looking for a way back into the game. We gave him that lifeline and he rewarded us with some crucial goals to push his Clyde career league goal tally to 96. This allowed us to revamp the squad a little and add more quality, 5 players would come in from Queens Park over the course of the season, most notably the return of Swedish winger Kristoffer Peterson, who after leaving us found it hard to make a living in the game. Back to matters on the pitch and we start the season impressively with a 3-0 win at Pittordrie as Aberdeen continue to struggle to adjust to the lower level. We also racked up a high of 7 goals in the demolition of Alloa in the Challenge Cup as we fancied a run back to the final of this competition, before falling out on penalties to Raith (sound familiar?) in the Quarter Finals. Our league form remained decent though and without a team taking a real hold on the division, we remained in contention and a run of 3 wins and 3 draws heading into December put us in the mix as only Ross County kept us off the top of the table. We would end the year with a 3-0 win over Cowdenbeath and pick up 2 more wins to start 2021 as Dunfermline and Queen of the South. Then came our achillies heel... we remained undefeated for 4 more games but all 4 were draws. Yes some impressive as we held Ross at home and also kept Hamilton at bay (who were challenging in 3rd at the time) but not being able to collect maximum points would come back to bite us. Aberdeen beat us at Broadwood next up, before we win 1 and draw 2 of our next 3 as the chance to pull ahead of Ross County at the top had passed us by. We needed to turn things around, but nerves got the better of the team and 3 straight defeats handed the title to Ross County, as we lost 2 on the spin at home and only had ourselves to blame. Ironically we would end up winning our final 2 games, 3-1 at Ross and 2-0 at home to Partick (consigning our rivals to the playoffs and eventual relegation), but it was not enough and we need to regroup for another go next year. Cheers for following, yeah that survival was a potential turning point in the save.... however missing out last year on getting to the SPL could have reversed that fortune as the SFL1 is getting tougher and being Semi Professional its hard to compete with regards to attracting players of any real quality. Hey pearcey -thanks for the feedback Yeah SFL1 is tough, even more so that only 1 can go up and generally the team dropping from the SPL has that bit more quality than the rest. Plus as I mentioned above we are the sole Semi-Pro side at this level atm, so adds a bit more weight on top of us. As for youngsters... Ive played a fair few from the u19s but this lad is the only real gem as such and only 1 of 2 in the First team picture atm. Dean McLean Club Captain, nearly 200 league games since making his debut aged 16... won a couple of awards and is solid for us. Both additions again came from Queens Park as we cherry picked the best amateurs, but both were probably no more than squad players due to the quality ahead of them. Off the field and although my initial suspicions of Chairman Andy Cameron were not good following his takeover and loan to the club, we actually reach the magic million mark in our bank. Yes thats right, Clyde FC are healthily placed with £1million sat in our account... a nice place to be with many Scottish clubs fighting the wolf from their door. Back to the matter at hand though and thats another shot at climbing into the SPL. Notably its the tenth season in charge of Clyde for Ally Moist and although there have been ups and downs, its been a good decade for Bully Wee supporters. An opening day defeat at home to Hamilton was soon forgotten as we collected some good results taking us up to October, including reversing that defeat to the Accies at their place. We also managed a decent run in the Challenge Cup only to fall just short in the Semi Finals as Aberdeen squeezed by in a TV clash at Broadwood. Our other cup efforts were curtailed by SPL teams as Dundee United put paid to us in the early rounds of the League Cup at Tannadice, whilst we lost by the odd goal to Celtic at home infront of over 7000 fans in the FA Cup. The league was our priority though and a patchy October/November left us chasing St Johnstone at the top as the 'Super J's were looking to bounce through into the SPL after winning the 2nd Division last time out. We then beat Aberdeen to open up December, as we managed to collect 11 from a possible 15 in the Christmas month. However the new year started badly as 1pt from 9 gave St Johnstone a chance to stretch their lead to 12pts and look almost too far ahead to catch. To our credit we would win 7 from our next 9 games to close the gap as the last of those 7 wins was at home to St Johnstone which put us just a couple of points behind with 4 games remaining. Alas the nerves kicked in again and although St Johnstone also fell to the same fate, we managed to lose at both Forfar and Queen of the South as the relegation battlers ended our hopes of promotion with a pair of 1-2 defeats. A final day romp over Morton merely closed the gap on already crowned Champions St Johnstone, as once again we fell short by a couple of points after losing winnable games at the end of the season. On the player front Kal Naismith continued to wow the Clyde faithful since his return, banging in 28 in 32 league games (including 3 hat tricks) as he notched 32 in total for the season, collecting the divisions player of the year and top goalscorer awards. Dean McLean maintained his impressive stature at the club as he continued to collect U21 caps as part of a central defensive partnership that saw Drew McCormack get selected to the team of the year for the division for the 2nd year running. Further signings again came in on a free transfer as we looked to build on back to back Top 2 finishes and finally get over the hump and into the promised land. Ill start by saying the excitement stops there. Probably the most mundane of all my seasons in charge of Clyde ended on a whimper as we never looked like challenging for the top place, didnt really flirt with relegation bar a 1 week stay in 9th and once again had no reason to break out the silver polish as the cups were never in danger of returning to Broadwood under our esteem. It was one of those seasons for us, a couple of wins was soon followed up by a run of defeats and in the end 12 wins from 36 tells its own tale as we languished in the nomansland that is mid table of the Scottish First Division. Alexander for all the hype failed to contribute. Granted he is just 17 but he struggled being away from his Highland home and failed to settle into our style of play. Once again we graced the team of the year awards as Dean McLean and Charlie Telfer got the nod, but with the team starting to become stale, we may need an overhaul in order to get us back up and challenging for the top spot. Once again we were joined by a bigger club in the form of Motherwell who dropped out of the SPL, whilst rivals Partick Thistle continued to yo-yo between divisions to ensure we had 4 more derbies to look forward too in the coming campaign. Financially the club gave us a six figure budget, but as per usual our status as a semi professional club left players hiding behind the couch when we came knocking the door. Unfortunately all our early season optimism was pretty much quashed in the opening weeks. A pair of cup exits, including a dismal penalty loss to SPL3 side Annan left us with the league to focus on, however we couldn't find any real momentum and lingered about the mid - bottom of the 10 team division. Things never really picked up from there and then we lost 8 from 10 games available in the new year, a run that put us on the brink of relegation and with the performances shown I was sure that we would be hard pressed to dig ourselves out of the hole. However something clicked and what started with a draw at 'then' runaway leaders Cowdenbeath sparked a 5 game winning streak as we shot up the table and banished all relegation fears. We slowed down a bit in the final month after that, however we still had a huge role to play in the division as first up a 4-2 win at Partick would confirm the Jags relegation much to the delight of our travelling faithful. Before Cowdenbeath turned up needing just a win to confirm a miraculous promotion to the SPL.... we came out and resolutely forged a goalless draw to prevent their promotion party (due to St Johnstone winning on the final day) and somehow stop a Cowdenbeath promotion that looked all but certain when they held a 15pt advantage going into the final quarter of games. 7th again, a bit more risky than last years... but its not good enough and this time a real overhaul is needed throughout the club to try and find a winning formula again or we will eventually slip into the mire that is SFL2 and beyond. forameuss Posted May 6, 2013 Share Posted May 6, 2013 I can testify that Division 1 is an absolute nightmare to get out of. With only one promotion spot, and obviously only one relegation spot from the division above, very few of the First Division clubs start out anywhere close to favourites for promotion. The team coming down also has at least one season of SPL TV Money behind them, plus parachute payments. I've only ever experienced it with a fairly financially healthy full-time club, so to do it with a semi-professional one must be a nightmare. You are close though - for two seasons you were just one well-timed win away from being Champions. Last season would've just been a blip. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

The semi-professional status is killing me, stuck in division one forever after success early on. Wage bill gets cut back every year too. Did win the challenge cup though a couple of season back - the major highlight as a Clyde manager so far! Its 2019 currently. Still got some of the starters, Fitzharris, Watt, Marsh and even Barclay in goal. What formation do you play? Went for defensive tactics as we are just awful compared to other division one teams, but after two season of fighting relegation, this year I went for same formation but lets attack! We are now scoring more goals. Doing bit better, as mid table in December, but no where near making the push. Can't get enough money in to have more than one coach, so training youngsters isn't producing first team candidates Still playing FM13, as I buy every two years, determined to get them in the Prem!!
