Conflicting boardroom messages

So my season hasn't gone to plan after telling the board I would finish in the top 4 and qualify for the Champions League I am currently 9th with 5 games to play. The board stated at the beginning of the season that they wanted me to qualify for the Euro Cup (finish 7th). The previous season I qualified for the Champions league (finsihing 4th) and this season I got knocked out not meeting my targets, I however exceeded them in the FA Cup (semi final) and am currently in the Euro Cup (semi final)

As my contract is due to expire at the end of the season and they has been no mention of a new one from the board I approached them and asked for 'more time' asking them if we can write this season off and come back stronger next season. They agreed to this saying they'll forget this season but want improvement next. I then asked for a new contract for the following season and they turned me down saying your job performance hasn't warranted an extension we want to see more from you to warrant us committing a longer term deal.

So how can they say they forget the season and me to make improvements next when they won't follow it up with a contract so that I can?

Seems like a bug... I wonder what would have happened had you done it the other way around.

As i see it they are basically saying they are not going to sack you for failing to reach the targets agreed but they also do not feel you deserve an extension on your contract until you prove you can improve .

Do you only have a few months left on your contract or does it have another full season to run as if it still has say 15 months left they feel you have not done enough to give you a larger or longer contract . They might offer you a new contract at the end of the year on their terms not yours .
