Phippsy
After reading and contributing to various threads on this forum I think it is quite clear that a lot of 'long-term save' players are struggling with managerial progression. Having started with sunday league experience and unemployed in all of my saves thus far (on all FM versions) I also experienced this frustration from time to time. However, this year I have managed to progress (fairly) quickly, with only moderate success in terms of trophies/league wins. To date I only have two league wins and one play off victory but have managed to secure a move to a mid table Coventry City in the Championship. In my first year I won the Blue Square North with Hayes & Yeading fc, following this I moved to Wrexham half way through my first year at Blue Square Premier level. With the quality of squad I inherited, securing the title was a pretty simple task. Fast-forward a year and a half and after winning the League 2 play offs in my first year at that level I am now rock bottom of League 1 with no wins and only two draws in my first ten games. Rather embarrasingly, I resigned when the going got tough! I then applied for the vacant Ross County job and was surprisingly installed as their new manager promptly. Even more surprisngly, the club was third in the SPL with a pretty decent squad! After enjoying two years working in the SPL with Ross County (that included a 5th place finish, 4th place finish, a Scottish Cup semi-final and a League Cup final, but no trophies) I resigned in hope of securing a Championship club back in England. Two months later the Coventry job becomes available and I find myself in the hotseat again! Do you guys think that moving to the SPL for a few years is the reason I am now managing a pretty big club in the Championship? I just feel that, from my previous experiences on FM, that if I was still managing at Wrexham in League 1, I would not even have been considered for a Championship job. So my advice to those of you out there that have the long-term goal of managing in the Premier League is to secure a move abroad and gain vital experience managing there as in my case, it has acted as a great stepping stone. Thanks for reading.
Phippsy
Just interested to hear how your careers have progressed if you also started unemployed with sunday league experience? What clubs have you managed along the way? Ever been sacked? Certain players you take to every club with you?
crpcarrot
starting like you unemployed i tend to receive good offers once i have been at a club for 3-4 years. i think moving clubs often and resigning cant help your reputation. Edit: my games tend to go one forever so this is based on only about 3 long careers over different versions of FM.
Phippsy
I see what you're saying there about longevity with one club. However, my point is that by moving to Scotland for two years I have essentially leapfrogged League 1 and got a move to a Championship club. So I guess sometimes moving around clubs is the key to building reputation.
dave byrd
You already have a thread regarding this here: http://community.sigames.com/showthread.php/352607-Started-from-the-bottom-now-we-re-here... But yeah, managing in the SPL with a 5th place finish, 4th place finish, a Scottish Cup semi-final and a League Cup final is more than enough to get you the Coventry job and your career progression seems about right.
