The Life and Journey of Eskimo Joe

This career will be your standard journeyman career. I've had no luck trying to find motivation looking for a challenge or a specific team, so I’m just going to start unemployed and take it from there; maybe add some challenges along the way if something grabs me.

Introducing Eskimo Joe

WItT9Ug.png

A late comer to the beautiful game, this Icelandic born Brit never quite made it past the 65 minute mark at Sunday League level. Some say it was all the cigarettes and late night booze sessions. Others say it was his two left feet. But all that time spent on the bench allowed Eskimo Joe to observe what was happening on the pitch and transcend into the man you see before you. A football manager. Eskimo Joe took over his Sunday League team and led them to 3 wins. The other results do not matter to this story. All that matters is Eskimo Joe had a taste of success, an overwhelming urge to win. His ice-cold demeanour (and beginning his journey in Iceland) earned him his illustrious name.

2013 was fast approaching and Eskimo Joe knew the time was now. New year, new beginnings. We join Eskimo Joe in January 2013 as he sends his unimpressive managerial CV out to any prospective employers. Who is going to give this determined amateur a chance?

As Eskimo Joe sat patiently by the phone and continually monitoring his AOL email account, he wondered if a dream job of Palermo or Schalke would come calling. One by one teams turned their attention elsewhere; FC Twente, Palermo, Schalke - Eskimo Joe slowly realised this will be a tougher journey than anticipated. Next for rejection, Dundee, Charleroi, Stade Brestois 29 and finally Santa Clara. Just as Eskimo Joe was planning on calling the local shipping yard to see if he could get his old job back, one final letter was awaiting Eskimo Joe.

Job application successful. The club are not quite as prestigious as Eskimo Joe had expected, nor had he even heard of them in fact, but it's a start.

Eskimo Joe signed a £625 per week contract for the remainder of the season with the expectation of staying clear of relegation and to play attacking football. All this with no transfer budget and a mere £4.5k p/w wage budget.

Well the less said about these the better. Full of greyed out 17/18 year olds. Luckily the transfer window is open from July until March, so we can bring in a few more able bodies with our minimal wage budget.

9 remaining league games. 10 point gap on safety. Inexperience oozing throughout the club. Eskimo Joe certainly has a first taste of managerial pressures early on.

The first order of business in charge of Newry City was to bring in some real players otherwise we would truly be facing an impossible task of avoiding relegation. As you can see we brought in A LOT of players, 24 to be precise (with I believe 2 more awaiting confirmation). We needed enough to field a first XI, and enough for backups. Pretty happy overall with the quality I've been able to bring in and the depth we now have. Most of the players contracts will expire at the end of the season, so we can re-evaluate contracts nearer the end of the season.

Our first game was against Loughall and our new boys showed what this team had been missing all season. Debutants Ward, Waters and ex-English Premier League rightback Woods all amongst the scorers. We followed this result up with another 2 positive results with a draw against Coagh (which we should really have won with the CCC's we created) and a 2-1 win over Limavady. Slowly but surely getting the points on the board and now 6 points behind safety with 6 games to go. If we can keep up our current form we could potentially be in with a chance. But we have some tricky fixtures left remaining.

The curtain has drawn on this years campaign and inevitably Eskimo Joe was unable to save Newry from near certain relegation. Managed to get points on the board but it was always going to be a monumental challenge to survive. Signing off with a nice 4-1 win over follow relegation side Dundela hopefully gave the fans something to cheer about, for a bit.

With Eskimo Joe's contract due to expire at the end of June, he decided the time was right to leave early and begin looking for a new challenge. Only 2 jobs are currently available, Perth Glory and Bari. Perth Glory instantly laughed off Eskimo Joe's advances. Bari have just been relegated from Serie B so will become in active. Let the holidaying commence.

NK Nehaj

After a being unemployed for 2 months, and countless rejected job offers, Eskimo Joe finally received an offer to ply histrade in the Croatian Second Division with NK Nehaj. With very little history and resources available, this will prove to be exciting and challenging.

Based in the small town of Senj, with a population of around 7,000, this semi-professional club are currently going through best spell of success this decade. They play their home games at the pod Nehajem stadium.

NK Nehaj Pre-Season 2013/14

The first order of business for Eskimo Joe was to bring in some staff. They currently had no-one on their books, so a small backroom team to help out was needed.

xYSR0Z2.png

Good enough additions to make it through the season. Was very difficult trying to find staff members to join. Put to use the job advert feature.

We got a decent pre-season in with mixed results. Due to no assistant, the first game had to be taken by EJ, luckily resulted in a win. The assistant then went on to pick 1 point up from 3, so EJ took over again and recorded a 3-2 victory.

F9YwzQA.png

With the team predicted to finish rock-bottom of the league, reinforcements were paramount. Both quality and depth was needed, which is why 15 players were brought in. Numerous players were also put up for sale, but there were no takers, nor do I blame them. They are truly awful.

9kV91nX.png

Money Signings

Marko Tadic - The big money signing to play as our #1 striker.

Mario Galesic - Versatile and has quality. Will be first choice in CM.

Slavko Sipic - The final signing saw us bolster our attacking options. Should be first choice on the left flank.

The league begins in 1 weeks time. Let's hope Eskimo Joe and the team are up for the challenge.

NK Nehaj 2013/14

So we're now a third way through the season and here's how its all looking. Our form picked up vastly after a shaky start with the highlight being the 3-2 victory over Solin, their first defeat of the campaign and a MOTM performance by Tadic. This match also so Eskimo Joe do a Di Canio as we clinched the win in the 91st minute. However we are still conceding a lot of goals, mostly from corners! And we miss copious amounts of one-on-ones, especially Tadic. Overall, very happy to be sitting in 5th place, 4 points above relegation considering we were nailed on for the drop. Still a long way to go, but hopefully we can keep up our decent form.

A quick look at how the team are performing. While I slated Tadic's one-on-one ability, he is clearly our only source of goals at the moment, bagging 11 in 11. He's also joint leader on assists, so he is absolutely crucial to our survival.

NK Nehaj - Before the Break - 2013/14

It's December 1st and all games have finished for a hefty 97 day break with the next match coming early March. Now I've no idea why they need so long off, but there we go. On to the last 4 games. We were on very good form picking up 3 wins and 1 draw, propelling us further away from the relegation zone. The 2 cleansheets were also a pleasant sight as they don't come by too often. We also managed to fit a friendly in there due to a 2 week cooling off period, which kept morale high.

NK Nehaj - January Transfer Window - 2013/14

The opening of the January transfer window saw the board offer us some more transfer and wage budget in exchange for a higher position. With these funds we brought in 5 new faces as well as many more rejections. No players left the club. We also managed to tie a few players down on longer contracts and some whose will expire at the end of the season. Of the players we brought in, I'm hoping at least 3 of them will become first team regulars to help us push on.

The Transfers

tXi5WRN.png

With such a long break (and still 25 days to go until the season starts again) we put together a friendly game on a weekly basis, of which I left my assistant in control of the match. He did not do too well. Only positives was the 2-2 with First Division Hajduk, and the 1-0 win over First Division (but relegation candidates) Zadar.

NK Nehaj - 2/3 - 2013/14

Two thirds of the way through the season and we have found ourselves in remarkable form, morale is high and we're playing good football although we were embarrassingly poor in our last game. Really disappointing. I think we'll be asking a lot to keep this tempo up to try and catch Solin though as we're currently closer to 5th than 1st. But the signs are positive and avoiding relegation shouldn't be an issue.

Tadic again top rated over the past 5 games. Although I expected more infront of goal from him, but his assists make up for it. 17 goals and 12 assists in 22 games is brilliant. We're terrible financially, constantly making monthly losses so a few of the higher earners may have to leave at the end of the season.

Would you believe it! Now that was a tight finish, one which I did not expect at all. Solin didn't capitalise on their lead and ended up on equal points, finishing a place below. Even though we got so close, I am happy with the overall performance. And had we not had long injuries with 4/5 games to go to key players, who knows what could have happened. It does inspire confidence going into next season though.

Looking at the squad there are clear weaknesses and vulnerabilities. My change in tactic saw a few positions become weaker, notably the sole central midfielder and the inside forwards, as I only possessed conventional winger type wide players. It's also evident we do not have enough goal scorers, with Tadic contributing the majority (also triggering top goalscorer and player of the season contract clauses, damnit!).

Reasonably happy with the overall quality we've been able to bring in. Some of the backup players look like they could fight for first team spots and the players for the first team could find themselves on the bench. Ideally we need to be looking for promotion within the next 2 years otherwise some of the higher earners will definitely have to go, but with the players we've now got, hopefully we can push on and compete. The deal for Tolic was only £10k and not the £525k it shows on the transfer screen. We will just owe £500k to HASK if he plays 10 international games, and at 36, with a year contract and a backup I think we're pretty safe on that front.

NK Nehaj 2014/15 - Q1 Update

Well the league has reduced in size from 12 teams to 10 teams, meaning we now play each team 4 times instead of 3. But as it stands, we go into this first quarter in good shape sitting at the top of the table. Some results more impressive than others. We got off to a great start getting a win over recently relegated side Zadar who are predicted to go straight back up. Or league form has been so-so these past few games and despite the 4-1 win over HNK (and that was an even match) we've not set the world alight.

A very busy 2 months almost saw the fixture pile up knock us off the top spot. Luckily our post-break form gave us enough of a lee-way to afford such results. At one point we were 11 points ahead and when the Hr. Dragovoljac match came around we were just 1 point ahead of them who were in 2nd. Had a word with the team and thankfully it boosted the morale and we were able to get a very lucky 1-0 win to put us 4 ahead. I'm extremely happy with the players we've been able to bring in so far. This has tightened our defence up one hell of a lot, I just hope they gel quick. With still a month left to go in the transfer window I'm looking to bring in a backup striker and ideally a central midfielder. We have two players coming in January (I misread the end of contract time!) who will add quality further up the pitch, so hopefully we can hold out until then. But we've done well so far, but really depleted our resources and we don't have much funds left for many more signings over the coming month.

Transfer Thoughts

We're now at the end of the transfer window and it got to the point where we couldn't attract anyone due to having no money or wages available. But since the last update we've brought in 3 players with 2 on loan. Dudu is going straight into the first team in the advanced playmaker role. His physicals are lacking which is why we'll be relying on his technical and mental skills. The other two are backups of a higher quality than what we have. We also managed to offload a few players and bring in a little cash in the mean time.

- - -

On to the league. The difference a few signings can make! I feel we're much stronger defensively despite falling a way a tad after the first 3 games, but we're doing a whole lot better than I imagined we would. I can't really fault the team as long as we keep getting the points on the board. Also as a rule you need at least 4 homegrown players in your matchday squad, which is a nightmare as ours are god awful, we essentially only have 3 subs a game.

It's really tempting. I've never managed in Australia before and the rules are a lot different than what I am used to, so could be an interesting challenge. However they have a distinctively average looking squad and I am making head-way (kind of) with NK Nehaj. So I'm not sure what to do! Player Stats | League Team Stats | League Player Stats

GK

Kristijan Dumencic

Kristijan Jajalo

Positional Rating: 4/10

Comments: Not good enough for the top end of this league. Will look to improve but not a priority position due to a decent defence.

CB

Mario Galesic

Evaldo

Mamoutou Coulibaly

Luka Kotromanovic

Positional Rating: 5/10

Comments: Evaldo and Coulibaly are class, but we don't have much in a way of backup or competition. Will look to bring in 1 or 2 more players for this position.

WB

Nikola Valentic

Nikola Menegati

Dario Rugasevic

Positional Rating: 3/10

Comments: Only Valentic is good enough for this team to progress. Menegati's contract is up at the end of this season so will look to add to both flanks.

MC

Mario Galesic

Matjaz Kouter

Positional Rating: 2/10

Comments: Not good enough in this position, and with the way I'm trying to play I need real quality here. High priority position.

AMC

Deni Rubcic

Dudu

Ibrahim Belle

Positional Rating: 6/10

Comments: Dudu was very good for us and will likely remain first choice next season with Belle a more than capable backup.

IF

Frank Oliver Ongfiang

Abel Peralta

Slavko Sipic

Positional Rating: 5/10

Comments: There's still clear room for improvement here. I'm wanting more goals to come from our wingers and these just aren't really delivering. Sipic's contract is up at the end of the season so I will need to add depth here. Ideally a first teamer with one of the others dropping to backup.

ST

Marko Tadic

Borrachinha

Positional Rating: 4/10

Comments: I don't think Tadic is good enough to take this team forward any more, and I had to up his wages just to the match highest earner clause, so it's likely he will be shipped out this summer. Borrachinha has potential, but that's all he really is at the moment. Will look to bring in a first team striker over the Summer.

Top Scorers: Marko Tadic (9), Dudu (8), Peralta (5)

Top Assisters: Peralta (11), Valentic (7), Tadic/Dudu (6)

Behind the Scenes

Board Overview | Finances

Still not very good on finances, but we can not afford not to spend or we will slip into mediocrity. We're also spending £190k to expand the stadium by 250 seats!

Next Season

Improve problem areas, re-work backroom team and work our way into the European positions.

As I was coming to terms with staying with NK Nehaj for the remainder of my contract, we received this offer which we accepted. So let me introduce you to Eskimo Joe's third club.

Metalurg Zaporizhya

A step up from NK Nehaj in terms of club statue and population, new and exciting times are ahead for Eskimo Joe. No real history of note other than recently winning the Ukrainian First Division in 2015. They play their home games at the Slavutych Arena which has a capacity of 11,756.

Metalurg Zp Overview | Metalurg Zp Information | Facilities | Finances | Ukrainian Premier League Rules

Nothing too spectacular. Finances aren't in great shape, but the club do have Top youth facilities which is a bonus; maybe something for me to focus on as per our contractual agreement.

Media Prediction: 12th

League Season Expectation: Mid-table

Transfer Budget: £90k

Wage Budget: £45,887 (currently using £43,673)

Transfer Thoughts

A busy transfer window saw 16 players depart from the club (with hopefully a few more still to go) which left us quite short on numbers and quality. We have received a decent amount in total for out outgoings and saved on some wages too. The players that have come in so far I'm very happy with and some of them will make an immediate impact. Trosyuk and Domjancic were brought in as staff but they'd only accept a player/staff contract, which was fine. I'm still looking to bring in some more faces, especially more defensive players, before the transfer window closes.

Pre-Season Friendlies

Transfer Thoughts

A few more faces to equip us for the remainder of the season. We needed some more Ukrainians to meet league restrictions so that's what I tried to do. There really are not that many of note who are attainable. We brought in a couple though and hope they can make a contribution. I needed to strengthen at left mid and ideally left fullback, only left mid was able to be strengthened with the signing of Baranets, and arguably both Jamelao and Rancharia who can both stake a claim to that spot.

Taking a look at the beginning of the league season. An average start with 2 wins, 2 draws and 2 losses. Overall I'm happy with how we're currently performing albeit I'd like a few more goals, but hopefully a change in tactic will see to this.

The Personnel

Key Players

Serrano (ST): Our main contributor of goals and a mainstay in this squad.

Milicevic (CB): He didn't look all that looking at his attributes, but he's performed extremely well.

Volovyk (CB): One of our highest rated CB's and he's been very good in helping us keep a tight ship.

Metalurg Zaporizhya 2016/17 - End of October Update

200px-Ukrainian_Premier_League.png

We've been absolutely class since the new tactic winning 7 of our last 8. Even the game we lost we didn't deserve to, but we weren't good enough for the win. Some really good results against top half of the table sides and if we can keep this sort of momentum up I'll be really looking for a top 5 finish.

Ukrainian Cup

The second round saw us steamroll Sal Dnipro with no trouble really. We made horrendous work of the third round though, I decided to field a rotated side and we were lucky one of our main strikers was coming back from injury which is why I decided to play him and he managed to bag a hatrick. Other than that we were really complacent. We also managed to dodge a top team in the quarter finals and can only hope if we progress Desna can cause an almighty upset!

The Personnel

Key Players

Serrano (ST): In very impressive form at the moment, if he's not scoring he's usually involved in our attacking play.

Milicevic (CB): Still as consistent as previous update.

Silyuk (W/ST): Surprise player for me. Played when there had been injuries and largely stood up to the plate. Don't think he'll do enough to hold down a spot, but he seems a good option to have.
