toon_84 Posted August 23, 2013 Share Posted August 23, 2013 Might sound like a weird question, but do you actually make decisions based on whether it would make the player happy in a non AI sense. i'll give you an example...... my club legend is badly on the decline he is probably the 8th best CB at the club now but I just noticed he is on 499 apps and I have the euro super cup coming up and it could (unless a massive injury crisis happened) be his last chance to get the magic 500 plus possibly his last winners medal as a player would you a. start him as captain, but with that nagging feeling that he could mess up and we could lose, but he could have his moment in the sun, standing ovation etc. b. bring him on towards the end if you are in a safe position c. leave him out altogether, this is football things move on, hes had his chance, let the younger players have theirs the whole topic makes no difference to the actual game what so ever but its hard not to get attached to things like this in my eyes Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

He was in some Championship reserve team which escapes me at the moment, and hadn't played a first team game in a long time, but an injury to Alan "Mad Shagger" McGregor meant he was worth a shot. He announced his retirement before the tournament meaning he could end up playing his last professional game with me. I bricked it in the last 16, throwing in David Marshall and watched Spain knock four past us. It could have been Gordon - he would've got a clean sheet... But usually I'm not one for sentimentality, mainly because I rarely pay enough attention to what's happening. deltablue Posted August 23, 2013 Share Posted August 23, 2013 In the past I'd try and play departing players in the final match, nowadays keeping players around and giving them a last hurrah is reserved for personal legends. As for the question, if he's declined badly I'd not start him, and as the Super Cup is very early in the season (and not that important) I'd be more likely to play him/keep him on the bench later on rather than do it in that game. I've kept Gerrard in my Liverpool first team till he was 38 or 39 and handed him an occasional league start/sub appearance along with easy cup games so that he wouldn't consider retirement - even though he was largely useless due to the rapidly deteriorating physicals. Can't remember if he beat Callaghan's record for total appearances, but probably not. The same was with Carragher, albeit to a lesser extent, and in general I tend to care about the declining footballers (even regens) who started their career there because one-club-people are so rare in the modern game. When I managed Ireland I kept putting declining Robbie Keane in the first XI against the likes of Andorra even when he had been out of club for several months and already had the retirement planned - just to make his all-time goalscoring record even more formidable. I also tend to offer former players coaching jobs even if their attributes are awful - I believe it counts as sentimental, too. toon84, testimonials are confirmed for FM14 already Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

I like the players to retire at my club, even if they don't play football during the last couple of years. I bought David Beckham with Torino, just to see him play his last matches in my club (he stayed 2 seasons, playing about 10 matches) I would let him in just to let him reach the 100 goals in league matches (unfortunately, he only scored 99). I'm still keeping Rolando Bianchi, even though he's 32, and I have Giroud and Dzeko as first options, Bianchi gets to play 30% of the games as starter. I also tend to keep bad players longer than I should, specially if I have some kind of "Affection" (yes, I understand I can't have any relationship with and AI player). I bought a 2 stars left midfielder, he played really well the first season, when my focus was to stay in Serie A, he's still a 2 start winger, but my goals now are to get into European competitions, I still play him as my first choice, even when I know he's not the best player, and I should sell him for 500K o.b.o. and buy a decent winger. I also tend to buy a lot of arentinian players, and try not to buy brazilians, uruguayans or spaniards, not sure why. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Just played my last game of the season and put out all the players that were not going to be getting their contract renewed and also players I had on loan who were leaving. It meant a weakened starting eleven with a couple of players being played out of position - there was nothing to play for and I felt the players deserved a final appearance. There was also a player that I was on the fence about giving a new contract to - however I noticed that he had me in his favourite personnel and so I offered him a new contract. Very sentimental or if a player is doing good in a tournament I use him there. I will start a save, I always* start in the lower leagues in England and bring that team through the leagues, I always want to take the minnow to the top of the world, during every save there is at least 1 player I will pick up on my journey that I am so chuffed with it is almost like a bond is formed, I take him from a young kid to a super star. Once he starts to get on a bit and is not good enough for the first team, or indeed he announces his retirement, I stop playing the save, it really is as simple as that. I just get the feeling that it is not the same anymore. Maybe I am a bit like SAF, bringing all those kids through and when they decide to call it a day, maybe you know it is time to call it a day. *Just started a new save on FM12, something I have never done before in all the years playing FM, I have went to the lower leagues in Italy and it feels like a totally different game. Playing as Rimini and having lots of fun, anyone looking for a new save in FM12 could do a lot worse than this team and league, I am though playing a journeyman save and will wait for the offers to come in once I have won the league. Harper Posted August 23, 2013 Share Posted August 23, 2013 I've held onto Ryan Shawcross and Marouane Fellaini about three years longer than I normally would. They are both going on 32. But they've both been the spine of my team for six seasons (entering the seventh). Shawcross has been a good servant and is studying for his coaching badges. His contract expires at the end of the season and I'm trying to get him to sign a player/coach deal. I've had his replacement lined up for five years (bought the kid when he was 17, Shawcross being 27) and I find myself giving Shawcross starts, even in important games. Fellaini is still bossing it in the midfield, but is being a bit of a **** when it comes to contracts and aging. Won't take a pay cut, won't stay in football. I'm thinking about selling him. He started there from my first season when he was 16 and is now the clubs all-time record goalscorer. He is only rated half a star, but no matter what I could never get rid of him. He has a half star rating but keeps getting assists in the odd game I've played him. I brought up a pair of center backs to the SPL where they anchored the defense for years, and then one started to decline and wasn't getting an automatic start every game, and suddenly he went Bosman and left on a free transfer to Motherwell. Caught heck from the fans and board for it, but once he had decided, he wouldn't talk to me anymore. Every time we play Motherwell now, I send my boys in with strong tackles - he'd expect nothing less from us. His mate on the back line's getting up there in age (27 - my team average age is like 20) , but he's still team captain and I hope to hold onto him and promote him into the backroom. I've got a couple players attracting some rather high transfer bids right now, one of them Brazilian with a chance to go back home and play in the top division...but I just don't want to let him go. Like most have said here I am sentimental but it really only tends to be if I'm playing as the team I support (NUFC). So I will keep the likes of Shola and Harper at the team as long as possible and will generally try to give them as many games as possible without being detrimental to the team. But I still have a newgen CB who was the first excellent player I had come through the youth academy. He is now 38, has 207 caps for England and has played nearly 1350 games for the club. He still has excellent attributes for his age (except for his physicals) and he was still first choice until a couple of seasons ago. podunkboy Posted August 27, 2013 Share Posted August 27, 2013 3 years running, Scottish Premier League champion, won three straight Scottish Cups, won the League Cup two of three years, life is really good at Bonnyrigg Rose Athletic...but then Fulham of the EPL has come calling, with 5x the salary and a huge increase in player salary. 12 years into the save, I likely won't have a better opportunity to move up...but these kids are my boys, I brought them up and raised them...oh, and I have an actual B.R.A. player jersey on order to wear while I play. Carbs Posted August 27, 2013 Share Posted August 27, 2013 I kept Chicharito in my reserves as player coach until he was well past his prime for sentimental reasons (4 x fans player of the year, 3 x leading euro goalscorer) and then when his contract ended he just upped and went without so much as a "cheers boss" so I say f*** sentiment from here on in!!!
