Struggling tactically critique my tactic?

Recommended Posts

I have been struggling in this years version of Football Manager. I have only ever been sacked once before of 5 years of playing. Any help please?

4-5-1

I am using a 4-5-1 formation with an emphasis on Tiki Taka style of play. Or at least an attempt. As you can see from my Tactic, I've had to change my wide

midfielders from an attack duty to a defensive duty, as my Fullbacks were being left exposed and were getting torn apart when the opposition regained possession.

My two AM sitting behind my Striker with an Attack duty and my DLF with a support duty.

Most of the goals I am conceding come in the second half. So bearing that in mind, I've changed from an attacking system to a control/counter depending on the

opposition. Giving away stupid corners is another issue that is slightly irking me, as far too many are given away and i'm conceding from them. Another issue is Strikers

and Midfielders having to many speculative shoots.

One comment you'll get is about your BWM(d). A ball-winning midfielder will close down like crazy, pulling himself out from his central position. In your case, he has zero cover, meaning there will be a huge gap in the center of the pitch in front of your central defenders. This is ripe for exploitation by your opponents. You might want to consider a "holding" midfielder instead of a chase-down-anyone-he-can-find BWM.

The other comment you'll get is about having no support roles throughout the midfield or fullbacks. Linking the back/middle to the aggressively running forward three is essential.

Yeah, fullbacks and wide midfielders just defend, and the top three, while linking each other well, are completely isolated (especially with "get further forward" ). There's no one to bring the ball to them to work their magic.

The team is divided into 3 isolated parts - the back four and wingers sit and defend, the who BWM runs around like a headless chicken, and three attackers up front who never get the ball.

I suggest reading the threads llama3 has posted about roles and duties, very simple and yet very useful for basic stuff.

I did a few matches today testing the difference between a BMW(D) and a CM(D) playing next to my DLP(S) for my 4-4-2 formation, the difference was huge.

The BMW will indeed run out of position to try and get the ball back, this opens up room for their cm, so one clever pass and he will be clean on your back 4, which often will cause your defenders to get confused about who to cover, the striker or the CM rushing in, this opens up space for the striker or the winger.

I found that using a CM(D) is a much better solution when only having 2 in the center midfield, the only way I would see a BWM work well here is if you are playing a very attacking strategy and pushing high up the field, where you want to get the ball back in their own half.

Probably should set "Play through middle", since you're so defensive on the flanks and your attacking players are focused in the middle. Also, either set "work ball into box" or set "shoot less often" on all attacking players you do not want to finish an attacking move unless they're in an exceptionally good position to shoot (or there are no other options).

You could also switch your BWM to a CM/D, or set your BWM to "hold position".
