Don't Bother, It'll be Dead by Next Week

“For ****’s sake, Terk.†Peacemaker7 was not happy. “Just leave it to the professionals, right. Me and my three million awards are writing the FMS team story.â€

“But I’ve already edited the database and everything.â€

“You can barely keep a story going as it is, just leave it to me and my awards. You’ll just get everyone involved and then disappoint when it grinds to a halt after five posts.â€

“Just like the last three times you’ve tried this.â€

“**** off, Raptor. I’ve got a thirty-five page thread going.â€

“That’s the Mod Requests Thread, you twat.†It didn’t matter what they said; however, I had indeed already edited the database and nothing – save my own apathy – could stop me now.

Unfortunately, only twenty-three of the twenty-five strong squad I wanted had turned up. Most attention was being paid to a short lad, cowering in the corner, whom nobody recognised.

“Who the ****’s that†Subtlety was an art form that had passed PM7 by.

“Chilliconcarnie.â€

“Whoâ€

“No idea, but he’s got an eight page story going, so he’s already better than me.†The truth hurts sometimes.

Naturally, it was the two Americans who were late. No doubt expecting to arrive late and ‘save the day’, then make a factually incorrect movie about the whole experience.

As I settled the lads down over a quiet pint to explain that, far from the bright lights of the Premiership that PM had taken us to, we’d be plying our trade in the harsh world of the Scottish third division, two horses were spotted moseying along in the distance.

The horses made their way closer, and soon identifiable as their riders were the Americans we had been unfortunate enough to include; Amaroq and Faramir. Amaroq jumped down from his steed and struck a pose.

“Ah love the smell of England in the morning.â€

“We’re in Scotland, ya ****ing ****.â€

“Well, no matter where Edinboro is, we’ll have this soccer thang figured out before y’all can call us redneck, Bush-lovin’, I-raqi bombin’ basturds.â€

And so the scene was set for FMS to once again (actually for the first time, seeing as my last attempt died on its arse) to rule the roost, north of the border.

Yep, me again. Sorry. Thought about doing this a few months back and PM’s story brought it back to mind. So blame him. I’ve picked twenty-five of you lot for the squad, if you didn’t make it then I obviously don’t like you enough. We start (obviously) in the Scottish third division, played on FM05 (because I suck at FM07). Oh, and if I didn’t know your nationality, it got stuck down as English.

Enjoy what little of this actually gets posted.

You'll have to make do with being captain, PM icon_razz.gif

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pre-Season

I couldn’t quite understand why someone had arranged for a friendly against Sochaux. Not only did it mean travelling all the way to France, but we would also, undoubtedly, get absolutely battered. However, play the game we did, and we even managed to score twice. Unfortunately they were both own goals (from Raptor and attjen) and Sochaux added another four from their own players to ramp up a clear win, but it was less than I had expected.

Peacemaker7 declared himself club captain before our first game at the newly opened Dave Green Memorial Arena, a lovely 25,000 seater stadium situated where Edinburgh Castle had once stood. We had picked much easier opposition this time in Penicuik Athletic, and were expecting a resounding win, but had to settle merely for a goal each from Raptor and WLKRAS to see us home.

Aaberdeenn took PM’s place for the game against Whitehill Welfare, and BobBev took the captain’s armband. It was another game we should have won easily, and Panpardus’ seventeenth minute strike suggested we would, but Donners had a ***** time in goal and two second half strikes from John Scott gave Whitehill the victory.

Our final pre-season game was again at home with Buckie Thistle travelling to meet us. A win was absolutely vital for the squad’s morale, and it duly arrived – in less than spectacular style – thanks to two goals from Chilliconcarne.

August 2004

“Anyone ****s up and I’ll break their ****ing face.†PM7’s captaincy teamtalk was still fresh in the minds of the players with fifteen mnutes of their league opener at Cowdenbeath. The home side were in control of the game and the forum legend was fuming. It took a moment of magic from PM to wrest the match in FMS’ favour, finding space on the left and whipping a deadly cross into the box which WLKRAS volleyed into the net.

That should have been job done, but soon after half time, the wrath came back, Wegason’s weak backpass intercepted by Darren Gribben, who rounded Donners and levelled the scores from a tight angle. PM7’s old legs were tiring by the hour mark and he was replaced by aaberdeenn – a move which irritated him no end – and our blushes were spared with three minutes left, chesterfan2 playing a nice one-two with flipsix3 and placing his shot beyond Andy Carlin.

Peacemaker lived up to his promise despite the win, and Wegason would be forced to miss three weeks of action with a fractured cheekbone, a move which allowed gandycoleuk to make his first start at right back against Peterhead. No goals this time around, thanks mainly to the inability to hit the target of Panpardus and HD, but Peterhead goalkeeper Paul Mathers was at least forced into two good saves late on to ensure the draw.

Amaroq was forced out of the trip to Elgin with a damaged elbow, though he refused to comment on just how the bruising had happened. His place on the right hand side of the attacking trio was taken by mametz, but it was on the left that our first goal was crafted, chesterfan2 whipping in a brilliant cross which forced goalkeeper Kieron Renton, under pressure from HD, to punch the ball into his own net. Flipsix3 had a goal disallowed just before half time after a lovely move had seen Spaz play him clear, and it was Aussie Spaz who wrapped up the points late on, taking aaberdeenn’s through ball and sliding a shot under Renton.

The month ended with our first cup game, a second round tie in the Challenge Cup against Morton. We visited Cappielow Park with the intention of winning the trophy this very season, but left with our tail between our legs having been beaten by a single goal.Smithaldo, taking the goalkeeping duties from Donners, came for a cross in the seventeenth minute but missed it completely, allowing Chris Templeton a tap in from six yards, and Morton merely then defended in numbers and managed to hold onto the win.

September 2004

The Chelsea of Scottish football. That’s how Gretna were described, but it was obviously paying off for them as they came to us as league leaders. We were determined to take that position from them, and looked good for it after Spaz’s cross had been headed in by Amaroq at the back post. However, davidbr tried to play a pass across his own penalty area just before half time, only to see the ball intercepted by Jamie McMaster, who rounded Smithaldo and scored.

The 1-1 draw against Gretna wasn’t the ideal preparation for our League Cup debut, but as it was only Dumbarton we were up against, we couldn’t be too worried. “It’s not like we’re playing Forfar†PM7 said during his teamtalk. Forfar would obviously present the biggest of challenges. Dumbarton didn’t.

We were even able to miss a penalty at 0-0, markyt firing wide after Wag had been brought down in the area. It was chesterfan2 who sparked us to victory, scoring twice in five minutes just after the half hour, first converting Wag’s cross, then taking PM7’s cross in his stride before sliding his shot into the corner. He completed his hat-trick in first half injury time, Wag setting him up, but his shot still needed a wicked deflection to beat goalkeeper Stephen Grindlay. HD rounded off the win in the second half, mametz1536 crossed for the Ayr fan to score on the half volley.

HD’s Dumbarton goal saw him rewarded with the captaincy for the trip to East Fife as PM7 was given the day off to go and harrass some Celtic fans as he refused to play alongside aaberdeenn. It appeared as if we missed our vitriolic leader, however, as the hosts took the lead through Dean Walker, but second half goals from mametz1536 – heading home a wonderful Spaz cross – and WLKRAS, who fired into the top corner after being played clear by aaberdeen, ensured a victory which kept FMS in second place.

The final league game of the month, against Stenhousemuir, saw PM7 return to the line up and Amaroq play his first game at the head of the three-man attack. Unfortunately, the Yank appeared to be as toothless in the position as Panpardus had proved – he was probably too busy checking a match report somewhere – and it was left to chesterfan2 (from the penalty spot) and Raptor (from HD’s pinpoint cross) to secure our 2-0 win.

The league cup second round pitched us with a tough tie against SPL leaders Dundee at Dens Park. With five wins and two draws in their first seven league games, Dundee had surprised many, and so their two goal success over us was no more than was expected. Tam McManus for the first after we had held out for fifty minutes, but Steve Lovell’s goal just minutes later killed any chance we thought we might have.

October 2004

After the disgusting loss to Dundee, we had to get back to the business of winning the league, as we were expected to do. Montrose at the Dave Green Memorial Arena was our next fixture, flippers was forced to play on the left wing with both Wag and chesterfan feeling a bit tired. That also meant PM7 and aaberdeenn were forced to play in the centre of midfield together, and it was not good news. We lacked any kind of drive from the midfield, and were stuttering towards another poor result (0-0) when, of all people, Raptor stepped up in the nintieth minute and hammered a twenty-yard free kick into the top corner.

Our first trip to Hampden (and it would no doubt be the first of many over the years) saw a much better performance – though only in the second half. Goalless at the break, we went ahead just before the hour when Amaroq’s cross was turned into his own net by the Queen’s Park goalkeeper. Within ten minutes our lead was doubled, Amaroq turning goalscorer, rounding the ‘keeper after PM7 put him clear. The win was rounded off in injury time, chesterfan2’s corner nodded in at the backpost by HD.

“**** this ****!†Wegason was again on the floor, hands clasped to his face. Peacemaker7 had taken his anger out on the young right back after he had given away the penalty that lead to defeat at Peterhead. gandycoleuk was sent off for protesting, his second yellow card in the space of five minutes, but there was no doubt that Wegason had felled Iain Good, and Craig Tully’s spot kick past smithaldo gave the home side a 1-0 victory. Wegason, unsurprisingly, would be out for three weeks with his fractured cheekbone.

We swtiched to 4-4-2 for the visit of East Stirling. Another goalless first half had me worried, but we looked far more threatening in attack, and that was proven to be the case when Amaroq headed in HD’s cross at the back post and PM7 took Spaz’s pass in his stride and drilled a low shot into the corner of the net.

I'd sue me if I were you, Roqy icon_razz.gif And I think the team might be doing a bit better with some Stevens-style wrath, but I'll leave that for you to hand out, PM

----------------------------------------------------------------------

November 2004

We stuck with the 4-4-2 for the visit of Cowdenbeath, and this time actually managed to score a goal in the first half. mark wilson27 swung a cross in from the left after thirty-eight minutes, and finally Panpardus had learnt where the goal was, stooping to head in his first goal for the club. We tied up the three points that kept us somewhere near the coattails of Gretna when aaberdeenn put Spaz clear and he made it an Aussie double with a rasping shot past Andy Carlin.

Next up was a another home match, this time a visit from Elgin. However, the less said about the game the better. It was a desperately poor affair with barely anything worth mentioning as a highlight. The only positive point was that Elgin were just as poor as us and the 0-0 final scoreline was about spot-on what both sides deserved.

A trip to Raydale Park afforded us the chance to try and make up some ground on Gretna, and we would have done had it not been for the league leaders’ super ‘keeper, Kevin Cuthbert. Amaroq and Spaz were given the striking duties, and each had a plethora of chances, but anything they fired towards goal was beaten away by Gretna’s very own Clark Kent, and we had to settle for a second consecutive goalless draw.

The month drew to a close with a visit from lowly East Fife (but then any side in this division could be described as ‘lowly’). Somehow we managed TWO goals in the first half this time, mametz1536 heading home chesterfan2’s corner before BobBev edged his zimmer frame towards the ball and curled a free kick into the corner of the net, just after the half hour mark. Spaz and mametz limped off injured in the second half, mametz with the more serious injury – a groin strain which would keep him out for two weeks – and we held on for our fifth straight clean sheet and a win that kept us clear of the pack in second.

December 2004

After two goalless draws on the run, I was just desperate for a goal against East Fife at the Dave Green Memorial Arena. We looked like to get it from the off, and we didn’t have to wait too long, mametz1536 heading home from a chesterfan2 corner in the twenty-sixth minute. Six minutes later we were two up, BobBev won a free kick and then lashed it past John Dodds to double our lead. No further score was forthcoming in the second half, the only moment of note a leg injury to Spaz which would keep him out of our first foray into the Scottish Cup.

That game in the first round of the Scottish Cup took us to City Park in west Edinburgh to face Spartans (not those of the six-pack sporting, leather glad variety). Both Spaz and mametz were missing injured, and initially we struggled to break down the non-leaguers, but we managed one before half-time, aaberdeenn clipping a free kick into the top corner on forty-two minutes. Things were easier after the break, HD arriving at the back post to volley home WLKRAS’ cross, and the win was finished off when Amaroq shot home from ten yards and aaberdeenn bagged the second of his double.

Back in the league we had to face Montrose at Links Park. Given that Gretna weren’t showing signs of dropping the pace too much, it was of paramount importance that we continued to put the pressure on them by winning as much as we could. In the first half we showed few signs of breaking the hosts down, but HD netted just after the break, latching onto Wegason’s through ball and rasping a drive across the goal into the far corner. Euan Hall briefly put Montrose level, but chesterfan2’s cross was nodded in by WLKRAS to give us the win.

Our first half toothlessness continued against Queen’s Park at home, and we even fell behind when Ally Graham lobbed Donners in the fifty-third minute. That only served to kick us into gear; however, Spaz turning chesterfan’s cross past Steve McGovern before Amaroq took his turn to benefit from chesterfan’s crossing ability. Amaroq bagged his double when Panpardus played him clear and the win was completed in style when BobBev curled in a ninetieth minute free kick.

Our second round game in the Scottish Cup again threw up a visit to non-league opposition, this time at Fraserburgh. We went ahead early on through Peacemaker7, Spaz flicking on a corner to the old man. We had to wait until the second half to extend the lead, Wag heading home from flipsix3’s free kick before Spaz made it three and Amaroq crossed for PM7, our captain sliding home the fourth.

The final game of the year saw us travel to Ochilview Park in the league, and we did not come away happy. Things began well, Amaroq scoring a diving header at the near post on eight minutes, but by half time Stenhousemuir were level through Dino Vita. Unfortunately, our effort to get the lead back in the second half was short-lived, BobBev getting himself sent off for a second yellow card in the forty-eighth minute. In the end, we did well just to hold onto the point.

League Position: 2nd

I think if we keep adding comments it might help icon_smile.gif so im going to do my little bit and so it doesnt look like this comment is just to bump my post count I will say

Nice work Terk always good to see these type of stories but seeing as you have used my name without permission I'm going to have to take legal action or maybe get an injunction to stop the progress of this story.

This threat will be rescinded if i see more starts for my player and more goals, other wise you will be reported

January 2005

The New Year began with a trip to face East Stirling at Firs Park. It was a remarkable game, particularly for the fact that Panpardus scored not one, but two goals during it. Chesterfan2 set up the first, his corner flicked on at the near post by Spaz for Pan to bundle it over the line whilst, just after the hour mark, he converted WLKRAS’ cross to double our lead. With the win tied up we began to attack even more and Spaz nodded in chesterfan’s corner for our third. Chesterfan was also involved in our fourth and final goal, his corner to the edge of the box struck on the volley by Faramir, and Spaz turned his shot into the net to claim the goal.

Our fourth consecutive away game saw us face Cowdenbeath and we continued the good form from the East Stirling game. We should have taken the lead before we did on the quarter hour, mametz1536 drilling a free kick beyond Andy Carlin. The game winning second goal came just after the half hour, mametz turning provider as he swung in a cross which Amaroq turned into the net.

The Scottish Cup third round had paired us with Hearts, and the Tynecastle side were reeling from the sacking of manager John Robertson just three days before. Still, they made life difficult for us at the Dave Green Memorial Arena and took the lead on twenty-three minutes through Graham Weir. Fortunately we were better than when we faced Dundee, and from the kick-off mametz crossed deep into the area and chesterfan2 slid in at the back post to score. We battled to keep the scores level as Hearts took control of the match, and incredibly we managed to steal the win, Amaroq finding Spaz in the area and the Aussie found the back of the net.

We were without Amaroq for the visit of Peterhead. The Yank had somehow blagged his way into the U.S. Gold Cup squad and made his debut as a substitute in the 2-0 win over Canada. Stuck back in rainy Edinburgh, mametz continued his good work, curling another free kick into the top corner. Our second came after the break, Peacemaker7 on as a sub played a lovely pass to Panpardus who inched his shot just inside the near post.

We were back on the road three days later to face Elgin at Borough Briggs – whilst Amaroq was still off on international duty, making his first start in the 6-0 thrashing of the Bahamas. We got off to a wonderful start up north, John Allison fouling Spaz in the area and chesterfan2 slotting home the spot kick. Spaz was again the provider for our second, whipping in a cross which Panpardus netted for his fourth goal of the month. The game was over by half time as we were three to the good, Raptor pouncing on a loose ball at the edge of the area and drilling a shot low into the corner of the net.

Amaroq’s international sojourn came crashing down around him in the quarter final of the competition. Having come on as a sub, he could do nothing to prevent a 0-0 draw with Costa Rica and then missed the first penalty in the shoot-out as his country fell to defeat. Earlier in the day, we had hosted Gretna at the Dave Green Arena and played out a tense, goalless draw against the league leaders. It was clear the two of us would win promotion, but not who would claim the title.

League Position: 2nd

Young Player of the Month: Spaz

International Honours: Amaroq (3 caps – U.S.A.)
