By the way, most affiliated clubs that are academies seem to cut their relationship with the main club within the first 2 years. Not sure whether this should be happening at all.

Academie Helsingborgs is no longer affiliated with Helsingborgs in my save for example. Funny part is, that even though they are now standalone, they still can't get promoted from first division south. Even funnier is that in the database, the stadium belongs to them, so Helsingborgs will have to build their own in a few seasons.

Edit: Also, anyone else having their keeper get injured all the time? The guy I have has an injury proneness of 5 and he picks injuries every 4-5 games. Mostly knocks but also serious ones.

Speaking of representation issues, I've noticed plenty of times where the ball obviously goes out on the side for a throw-in but a corner kick is awarded. I'm guessing it's a known issue because it happens way too often to not notice. Not something important or game-breaking but very obvious visually

TBH I've also never seen this and if it's happened, it's happened without me noticing it, I will now pay more attention and see if it does happen.

I have also seen this issue numerous times. I watch all matches on comprehensive highlights with touchline view.

OK guys, I'm actively waiting for one the corner-thingies to occur. As soon as I see one I'll record it but to search for them in previous matches is a bit too much for me :p

I believe I'll have something sooner or later!

As I've said further up, best to save the pkm and post in the bugs forum. Youtube clips are nice to view, but ultimately SI can't use it.

Yeah I will do that. But just for the visual confirmation and the forum's seal of approval I'll probably get a video too :p

I was wondering if this was just a one off but in my game which is in 2030 that almost all top sides have a long bullet throw specialists in their first team! I wonder if anyone else has noticed that in their game?

Have not noticed that yet, although I am only at 15/16 season. Stoke certainly use long throw a lot.....

It's usually pretty close to the corner flag so it can be hard to miss but there are definite examples of balls going the wrong side of the flag and being called a corner. A very minor graphical issue but I've logged a few examples of it.

This has been in many versions of FM but i just take it as a graphical issue and the ball was meant to go out for a corner, what is weird though is that ive seen the ball hit the corner flag and go out for a throw but if the ball goes out in the same place without hitting the flag then its a corner.

I think the biggest difference in this version compared to others is about getting your tactic fairly right or not. I had an aha-moment last night where I followed some advice in llamas thread and suddenly my Arsenal-team outplayed Chelsea away. And I mean outplayed.

The challenge I found in making tactics is to know where I am wrong. We all know that you have to build a tactic that creates movement and space, but simultaneously we also want it to be sound defensive. I thought for example that a box-to-box-midfielder would create sufficient movement, but if not set up correct he can be all over the place defensively.

When you create a tactic you have to consider getting the roles right, the duties within and even if you have made this right, you must decide which mentality and fluidity to use. Throw in team instructions and personal instructions and you have a real mix of everything and it could be difficult to see just were your tactic fails. Is it the tactic? Is it the players? Is it the match preparation?

I guess this is where a lot of the frustration stems from, because if you set up a bad tactic, you get heavily punished, and some of what you see in this ME are stupid mistakes that make you want to tear your hair out.

As I said, yesterday I got my team to play like I wanted to, and suddenly it is the AI making lots of the stupid mistakes my players did.

So I think this is potentially a great FM and a great ME, but the learning curve may be a little steep. I think a lot of us who play have good knowledge of football, and also played it at different levels, but we are not sure how to translate the way we want our team to play into FM-tactics.

What could be great was to get a more visual understanding of the roles, duties and mentalities, but I know this is a difficult task because no one wants the game to be too easy and too self-explainable either.

Fantastic post, well said sir.

This is one frustrating ME. Winger/Inside Forwards, cross early, cross normally, it doesn't matter what instructions my players beat their man then just meander and 99% of the time they just kick their attempted late cross straight into a defenders legs and it goes to a corner!!! Yet the AI has just curled a beautiful cross straight to the head of their forward who headed it beyond my keeper! A beautiful goal yet my team can't do it even with decent crossers and good headerers up top. Is it my tactics>? If so I have exhausted every single crossing option and it always goes for a corner!!

As you say, the AI did it. So it is possible. I'm afraid it seems to be your tactics then.

i just simply love it when i conced 3 goals from 3 corners in 13minutes...(they had only those 3 corners in the game..)

95% of goals i concede is from corners or free kicks or when ball bounces from corners...worst ME ever...and 4 months since releasing of this game and ME is bad like never before..

i wonder how u dont feel ashamed of such a poor game..

again big amount of goals...

You do know it's been the same release/update strategy that they always use, right? In fact, they've had another couple of hot-fixes this time. Each major one has had an ME update, and has put it in a much better state than it has been in previous games. It isn't perfect, there are issues, but they should feel ashamed? Come on...

Is it really 95% of goals, or is that one of the 43% of statistics that is made up? Have you tried changing your corner defence routines?

Admittedly the big amount of goals is mostly your defense's issue :p

Also for the Hazard thing, seems legit to me just an animation for the keeper missing - the one they drop to one knee to cover the goal.

As for the throw-in/corner thing, Murphy's Law wins for now, played 5 games didn't see it.. Will do as soon as I catch one(I play slow)

Use wingers on support and they will beat their man and cross in, as per their description in game. Wingers/Inside forwards on attack will try and score themselves.

Wingers were on support, then a suggestion was to play one on attack as per the 12 Step Guide. Then a suggestion was inside forwards, then a suggestion was cross from deep!!!!!

Can't just be me looking at all the comments about a lot of corners!

I just feel because of certain things in the ME that tactic building is based around building a tactic around that ME rather than basing it on pure footballing philosophy.

Actually that's the problem, there are hot-fixes every year... until the game becomes playable around march. I can't think of any other games needing such amount of updates and support at every release !

I know games that get balancing patches until ten years after their initial release. But whilst this might sound like blind defending, the truth is that few people apparently realize how complex a game such as FM is. To the best of my knowledge, it is the only game out there that even tries to simulate football as it happens. For each match it does such, on any given match day. Save for the animations, watching the FIFA action AI having a two by five minutes go at each other doesn't really compare. Oh, I could equally upload funny ME clips all day. Glorious own goals from fantastic diving headers, keeper fumbles, the ball that one night in FM 2012 went from box to box and almost back again in rather unusual ways.

[video=youtube;OJF3tvwxE6w]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJF3tvwxE6w

It's fun. It's hilarious. It happens. It would also be a bloody effin' miracle if it didn't.

Videos like these focus on highlighting isolated incidents, which in the overall pattern of things might mean comparably little. I think it was already beautifully pointed out that there are various of issues and errors that people don't even pick up, as they rather focus on blatant defense mistakes and blunders and comedy howlers that just cost them a match rather than seeing patterns in match play develop in ways they probably shouldn't. Some of those blunders are meant to be in the game anyway. But not all. This isn't meant to be FIFA, PES or a clip show and MOTD highlight's reel compilating sequences of top class football at its most pompous and glamorous. Certainly not with us witless couch potato bedroom wannabe top class managers pulling the strings, anyway. :-P

I think people might only retrospectively be able to realize how bad/good the ME in Football Manager/Champ Man was, and that's once Paul Collyer retires and the thing as it's always been is no more. Reportedly with Marc Vaughan doing the ME of mobile versions of FM which is apparently based around stat like RPG calculations rather than fully physics, he's been the sole person responsible for the code, the core logics anyway ever since day 1, and the thing's been worked on for years and years and years now. If you download the CM4 demo (it's only about 30 megs), you'll find very familiar lines of commentary for match events in a file that to this day is called "events.cfg". Actually you'll find them in older Champ Man games as well, such as 01/02, which Eidos released for free a while ago. As at least parts of the code all must be reasonably complex, and a one-man effort to a big degree, it could need just as much time to find someone and teach him, someone who will be able to pick the code up, understand it and carry the game further.

I have a different background than most, since in Germany SI Games had never had much of standing nor popularity, and people focused on different management games instead (German-developed ones, which is no coincidence). During the last quarter of a century of playing footie management games, I've thus seen too many truly deeply flawed or truly shoddy attempts at in-depth match day simulations, and thus FM's match sim was the first thing I learned to fully appreciate, back in its 2d blops/text glory no less. This market is taken, and I'm inclined to think that is for a reason, and the match day experience being a part of that. Every other studio/publisher in the genre's history has either closed shop or has stopped working on management games altogether. Remember that EA has recently pulled the plug on its fairly "budget" German third party developed FIFA Manager series likewise, and however ill-fitted its approach had been, trying to shoehorn management into FIFA Soccer action, that was the last of the bunch... for now.

From personal playing experience developing a match sim that roughly looks and behaves like something trying to ape football (such as FM does, warts and all) and that on top of that reflects the manager's choices (both AI and human) as well as the database seems no easy task at all. Certainly not for someone who has zero experience and has to start over from scratch, that is like everyone who now will ever enter the international markets. Sure, things might change one day. Might. Still, Mister Collyer must be in a very special position now, even if it's all just a rather gigantic niche of games that has always thrived alongside capitalizing on a sports just as gigantic.

Personally, having gone through all these years before without any halfway decent match day experience already, I shudder the thought. ;) And just you wait.

I can't think of any other games needing such amount of updates and support at every release !

This must be the only game you ever play then.

Games that have been 5+ years in development also have major updates to fix glaring errors post-release. If you have a console. think of the amount of times you put the disc in and it says it needs to do an update.

It amazes me people think this is the only game that ever needs fixed after it's been released.

Well said.

Also to see claims like this in a time where the top-selling games in Steam are "Early-Access" which basically means a buggy, incomplete beta version that is bound to be patched 100 times until it becomes an actual game, is actually hilarious. Plus you'll most probably lose all your progress 3-4 times in that period.

Trust me things could be MUCH MUCH worse due to the current trends in the gaming industry....

Without wishing to look as if I'm defending the indefensible, he did say 'amount' of updates. I think he knows there will be some, just that he thinks there are too many in such a short space of time. Which is like criticising a surgeon for operating on you three times in a month because you're critically ill. A bit ungrateful really.

Just thought I'd mention it that's all.

I've been meaning to ask. Do you only play FM Classic Dave?

GTA V has had 9 updates since release. As has Sim City. The latter was the very definition of unplayable for most on release - as in they couldn't physically play - and GTA has had an absolute nightmare with hackers, modders and cheaters, so much so that they had to bring down the servers to chase them out. The highest rated PC game currently on metacritic - Assassin's Creed Black Flag - has had 6 updates, and is due another as they switch on multiplayer.

I could go on, but seriously, if you can't think of any other games that need updated, you're not looking very hard.

Yes, and how many years was that in development for? Imagine if SI had the luxury of waiting five years between instalments.

Totally. I should add that I'm not saying GTA is a bad game because it's needed updates. Games will need updates believe it or not, and it's a sign that the developer actually cares about the product. They could just release it, then disappear for 6 months before moving on to FM15. Would that be better for some?

Use wingers on support and they will beat their man and cross in, as per their description in game. Wingers/Inside forwards on attack will try and score themselves.

Is there anyway to have both?

This is where I think there is a huge problem in that tactics have gone so far that players are not thinking for themselves. I dont expect players to always make the right decisions in the heat of a game but I would like to see IF(A)s, especially technical players with good decision making attributes choose to cross rather than shoot from silly angles when the cross is the better option.

Yes, we all know sometimes players will shoot with a team mate screaming out for a pass/cross but in FM14 there seems to be no middle ground between some roles, where is my IF who will cross and shoot depending on the situation? Its all far too rigid.

Not sure if this belongs in here but here we go. At the end of last season i managed to convince 2 key players i would get Champions league football the following season and on november the 11th they have both just handed in transfer

requests.

Im currently 3rd in the league and admittedly have not been doing well in Europa but it says i have failed to increase the clubs standing in the game as promised!

Totally agree with your post. The old adage that a Manager can't do an awful lot once the players have crossed the white line seems to be lost in the progression of the micromanagement in the game. Until this FM I always played classic tactics and pretty much had all players on mixed instructions which meant I hoped that they would use their heads. I don't want a player crossing from the byline as per my possible instructions if an opportunity has presented itself to cross from deep for instance. I can't see a way of playing "mixed" with the TC?

Plus the quote "Use wingers on support and they will beat their man and cross in, as per their description in game. Wingers/Inside forwards on attack will try and score themselves" seems quite confusing in some ways. Surely a winger with instruction to cross from the byline would be an attacking winger would he not?

And here's a positive one as well:

I just saw a team have a total of 10 players from loans on their squad.

So, anyone that thought it's too easy to win with loans, the AI now laughs at you and does the same. This is a nice change forward and looking forward to expanding even more.

Sometimes it just all comes together on the park for your team.

Look at this, front to back without the opposition getting a touch. Wish I could do this more often...

:D

If that's a goal-kick by the goalie then it's some bad refereeing right there :D

But a great team-effort right there. Great goal.

Nemanja Matic's performance against City is exactly the thing that SI should improve in the ME in future: defending with anticapating and with physical presence and almost completely without doing sliding tackles. Of course this is a brilliant performance from great player and you can't expect every midfielder in the game being able to do that but that is how Chelsea generally defended against City; by anticapating. I think that they had really few sliding challenges but they won the ball back by reading the game, blocking passing lines and when opponent is in tight space, stick your leg out and win the ball back to your own team. Simply beautiful defending and the game is almost completely missing this. :/

Few more near post goals. 3 in this game

[video=youtube;Bp8aIMPkM_M]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bp8aIMPkM_M

Don't get me wrong they're all good finishes, but I don't think it should be happening so often. Players on the side of the area have a tendency to shoot near post far too much as opposed to crossing/passing/far post shot. And also GKs shouldn't have as much trouble with them as they do

Link to post

Because it's not part of the game itself - with a PKM SI can look under the hood (in debug mode) to see WHY these things happen, whereas a youtube video is simply a video off the net showing random pixels moving around the screen!

Link to post

Why's that?

.pkm files allow SI to look at the incident again within FM, and it provides them with data that a YouTube clip cannot.

YouTube videos are good for showing events, but very little else - they really don't help SI at all I'm afraid.

.pkms are tiny files, so far quicker to upload than a YouTube clip, and the upload process is very easy:

Honestly, these near post goals have been known as an issue for months already. Hardly any need for more info on it now?

More examples of every acknowledged bugs are nearly always wanted.

There cam be subtle differences between each incident, and the more of those subtleties that are addressed, the less likely the recurrence of those bugs.
