roberto201
Hi guys, Huge fan of FM, buy it every year. I found fm13 quite hard initally, however got used to it over time and achieved success. Fm14 is a bit of a different story really. I'm struggling to find any consistency. I haven't done too bad so far but still get disappointing results against teams I should be winning in my opinion. So I am Man U, a team that most would say is quiet easy to manage and win things, however this is not the case in my save. Man U is not my first save but I was struggling so much with lower teams so this save was supposed to get me to grips with the new ME. I have tried to upload a screenshot but doesn't seem to be working. My tactic: SK/D - pass it shorter, distribute to def FBL/S - no instruction FBR/A - GFF, run with ball, stay wider CDL/D - pass it shorter BPDR/D - pass it shorter LW/A - roam from position RW/S - no instruction MCL/B2B - pass it shorter MCR/DLP/D - pass it shorter FCL/P - no instruction FCR/ F9 - no instruction I play Standard and Fluid mentality. The shouts are....shorter passing, play out of defence, stay on feet, higher tempo, exploit flanks, work ball into box, play wider, look for overlap and drill crosses. With this formation I have drawn at home to Man City 0-0 (they are having a poor season and did not even have one shot on goal), lost to fulham home, lost to chelsea at home, lost to cardiff at home and lost to swansea at home. Pretty poor!!! I like to play possession football all the time which maybe is a downfall as in some games direct passing can be the key. I haven't made many signings of sold many players, i'm in my second season with United so its basically the same team they start with. My games are quite boring most of the time. I try to add be more expressive and roam from position but doesnt really change much. Would really appreciate your thoughts on this if anyone can spot anything that can be altered for the better. Also not sure about posting rules but if someone can help me to upload screenshots that would be excellent. I have them in my documents folder but everytime I click on image and upload it says invalid URL. Thanks guys!!!!

podunkboy
Also not sure about posting rules but if someone can help me to upload screenshots that would be excellent. I have them in my documents folder but everytime I click on image and upload it says invalid URL. easiest way is to upload screenshots to a pic-hosting site and then link to them here using the button. Or if you've saved the pics on Steam, you can just paste the address in your post. Regarding your tactics, the only thing I really see is the number of player instructions "pass shorter" and then adding "shorter passing" in a shout, and "play out of defense"...just doesn't seem like the ball's going to move forward any time soon. What are your players doing when you watch the match? Just passing it back and forth and backwards?
SpartyOn
The shouts are....shorter passing, play out of defence, stay on feet, higher tempo, exploit flanks, work ball into box, play wider, look for overlap and drill crosses. Too many shouts, and they don't all go together. Playing wider and exploiting the flanks doesn't really fit a possession style. I'm guessing your team gets too spread out to keep the ball, then gives it away with the wide players high up the pitch, leaving you very vulnerable to the counter. If you want to focus on possession, you need to be more compact, get players closer together so they have more passing options. Having at least one of your wide players cutting in would help. Alternatively, you could focus on getting the ball out wide and ditch the short passing. Either way, I'd try to come up with a clear idea of what you want your players to do and then only use shouts that fit within that concept.
SpartyOn
Another thing is that you're playing a fluid philosophy with a lot of specialist roles. Though you could go to a more rigid style, I think a better idea is to stay fluid and remove at least one specialist role - Robin Van Persie as a poacher. He's far too dynamic of a player to just hang around the box looking for tap-ins. Make him an AF/A, or better yet a CF/A, to take advantage of more of his skills. roberto201
Thank you so much for the response. I made a few tweaks to the tactic however had this frustrating draw! I removed all player instructions and dropped the amount of shouts so now I have shorter passing, work ball into box, higher tempo and exploit the flanks. Also changed RVP to CF/A but as you can see he had a poor game...... Have had problems trying to get Rooney and RVP to play well. So frustrating when they 6.4's and 6.3's does my head in!! Northernpilgrim
I'd swap the poacher and F9 roles around so that you don't have an attack duty in midfield on the same side as an attack duty up front. Other than that, remove the shout for shorter passing.
Blaupunkt
I have been messing about a bit with my Man UTD team (and others!) and have been having a little trouble with this years FM, however i think i have a system which for the most part seems to work for me anyway!, i just beat Arsenal 7-0 at home with some of the best football i have ever played with any team i have managed in this years FM. In the end i decided to "keep it simple". I am not saying this is even a good tactic or will work for you but some of what i am doing is as follows. My general team settings are. Team settings to - Balanced and Standard. Team instructions to work the ball into box, Pass into Space, Hassle Opponents. Team Shape. Change RVP to AF Move the ML to AML duty Winger on support Change CMR from BWM to CM on support duty Change MR from Winger to wide midfield Change the duty of the RB to Defend (he will still attack) make both CD into CD am also experimenting with the right "defending" CD to play as a covering CD, fredinand/evans The rest is how i have it. I have not gone mad with individual player instructions either. GK - distribute to defenders. CM (S) - hold position AML (W/S) roam, tackle harder, mark tighter. WM (A) stay wide. and thats about it, it seems fairly sold, keeps possession well and scoring 23 goals in 8 games including charity shield and only conceding 3 with 6 clean sheets. i would personally play carrick as the DLP with giggs/anderson as backup, i have kagawa as the AML with januzai/giggs backup, i guess it also depends who you have in your squad, brought and sold. i sold fabio and got shaw and use him as back up for evra until he is ready to be first choice, i figure evra will have 2 seasons in him, i also got khedira who i rotate with fellaini, fletcher will also fill in here when fit. JD nawrat
Problem with trying to play possession football is that you are also trying to play 442. It is not a formation suited to play formation football.
