If it is true then it'd get a big 'Meh' from me. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Nah. Not the type of player we need if we're going to properly replace him. Can't see him working with Rooney, would be an either/or kind of thing and Rooney wins. Would also impede Rossi's progress. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

I don't think he'd fit into the Premiership either tbh, and he's hardly been impressive at club level for ages.

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content">Who would have credited it a year ago? Ruud van Nistelrooy is actually leaving.

No more 'why the long face?' jokes. No more 'Mr Ed' lookalikes. And, more worryingly for that part of the population that owes its allegiance to Manchester United, no guaranteed bucketload of goals each season.

But Manchester United don't need to buy a a replacement striker. Or at least it shouldn't be their priority.

Despite Van Nistelrooy finishing (as usual) as their top scorer last season, no-one but Mrs Van Nistelrooy would claim that United played their best football with Ruud in the team. The demolition of Wigan in the Carling Cup final and the fluid football associated with it came with Wayne Rooney and Louis Saha up front, and that was how Sir Alex Ferguson chose to end the season.

The midfield, on the other hand, was overrun against the likes of Middlesbrough. Phil Neville - shipped unceremoniously off to Everton at the start of the season - would have walked into the team.

And that midfield has needed fixing for more than this year. Roy Keane's unceremonious departure from the club where he became a legend and Paul Scholes' season-ending injury just brought the problem - with apologies to Paul - into focus.

First of all, a battler is needed, and then some creativity should be added.

Gennaro Gattuso and Michael Ballack would have been the two signings that turned United into a title-winning team next year, but Ballack has joined Chelsea and Gattuso is staying in Milan. So where else can United look?

Firstly, they need to accept that they won't bring in two players of that quality, because there simply aren't another two players good enough. Certainly not available, anyway.

Patrick Vieira, despised by the Old Trafford faithful for so many years, is one option - and is very much available following Juventus' relegation from the Serie A - but would only be a short-term solution.

Further down the ladder Mahamadou Diarra is an option that has been repeatedly linked with a move to Old Trafford, but he would be a gamble - as all players who have only 'proved' themselves in the French league are. Let us not forget Eric Djemba-Djemba.

Closer to home, United are currently fighting for the signature of Michael Carrick, a player who has demonstrated his credentials at Tottenham and for England. For five or six million pounds his colleague on the England bench (until lately, at least) Owen Hargreaves could make his way to Old Trafford as well.

Carrick and Hargreaves are no Ballack and Makelele. They're no Gerrard and Alonso, for that matter. But they're certainly not O'Shea and Fletcher.

There's the rub. United finished second in the Premiership with Fletcher, Alan Smith, O'Shea and Ryan Giggs playing the majority of their games in central midfield. The addition of two solid central midfielders might not see them catch Chelsea, but it would see them stay ahead of their other rivals.

Obviously a world-class striker would be a nice addition to the squad, but United are not Chelsea. Budgetary conditions apply, and United's priority with their summer piggy-bank fund must be midfield.

Added to that is the fact that there just aren't many top quality strikers up for grabs. The World Cup was hardly goals-central. Would you stake a fortune on Luca Toni adapting to the Premiership? Do you think Cristiano Ronaldo's chubby namesake would cope with the pace?

United are hardly short in the striking department either. Rooney is the country's great hope. Saha, if he stays injury free, will score goals. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was a quality striker before his injuries and will hope to prove he still is. Smith can be moved back to the front once he's back in the side.

Then you look at the youth. Giuseppe Rossi has earned more praise from Ferguson than most young players, and is at an age where he needs to get on the pitch for the first team if he is to develop. Another player in the pecking order ahead of him would not help.

Of course, the problem is that a good, developing young player isn't enough for United. They need to be immediately brilliant. Prolonged success means the fans demand it - particularly the armchair fans and the glory supporters - and significant debts mean the owners demand it.

How those debts will affect the development of United's other bright young hope remains to be seen. Dong Fangzhuo joined the club more than two years ago, and will qualify for a European passport in December. Should he become a big name for United, the marketing potential in Asia would be incredible. No club are more commercially aware than United - it wasn't chance that saw Park Ji-Sung become the focus of their kit launch.

But while United's strikers are in better shape than the media would have you believe, there is little doubt that their midfield needs improving. And United fans can take comfort in the fact that Sir Alex Ferguson is not the kind of manager to bow to media pressure telling him he needs a striker.

After failed attempts with Kleberson, Djemba-Djemba and Liam Miller, Ferguson's pursuit of Carrick finally shows that he is willing to pay over the odds rather than take a gamble on an unknown quantity, and that can only be good news for his club.

So, United fans, why the long face? </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

He's right too, Hargreaves and Carrick as a centre midfield partnership would give United a very strong side for next season

in all seriousness, I don't see tevez working out for you guys. his game is actually quite like rooney's...the two of them play direct, attacking football causing havoc in defenses but you wouldn't have anyone in the box waiting to capitalise on it.

Just got back.

I think they showed a different game on the tv to the one we saw at Craven Cottage as apart from the goal Giggs was abysmal. This isn't just the view of the 5 of us who were together btw. Half the stand wanted him subbed for Park. He was terrible yet again but his goal will deflect all the criticism.

The constant long balls fro mdefence were poor today but if I am honestthere was no movement in midfield all game. Really only Larsson & Ronaldo seemed to be looking for the ball. Whenever Rooney got it he seemed intent on walking it into the net.

But yeah, today has actually got me properly believing now as we should have lost that game the way we played & we ended up fluking a win (after subbing off Vidic & bringing on O'Shiite & Silvestre I might add icon_eek.gif). That's how titles are won. A draw at Liverpool & then a draw against Chelsea will do me just fine icon14.gif

Never said he wasn't open to the idea but a lot of players, sensibly, see coaching as an avenue for staying in the sport do they not? Given his recent experience with injuries and a prolonged period of time out it seems logical to me for him to keep his mind focussed on football when he couldn't get out on the pitch himself.

Like I said its more of a general musing about how I see/have a gut feeling about the sort role he'd take up at the club after retiring from the game, wasn't based on knowing he's been doing his badges or not.

Fletcher was brilliant against Roma and again last night. His confidence must be sky high.

Hargreaves would be still a good addition and I've long said he would be a good signing, but 20 million is too much for him. Apart from the fee it would not render Fletch surplus to requirements. United have been lucky with injuries in centre-midfield this year and ideally we need 4 top class players there. If we get Hargreaves this year, it will give him a year to bed in before we get Scholesy's replacement the season after.

Having said all that, if we only make one big signing, I'd feel a little bit disappointed if it was Hargreaves, no matter how highly I rate him.

and yeah, Giggs was loads better yesterday. Jonny's right in that the main annoyance for me is his speed of thought has been seriously lacking and he's so often caught on his heels when a pass is played to him, allowing the defender to easily intercept. less of that yesterday, better movement, some genuine creativity and blimey, maybe even a bit of leadership and taking of responsibility when we needed it. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

good good, for a while I was starting to think it was just me that saw him improve yesterday.

annoys me when people rate players based on their pre-conceptions from recent games or whatever, rather than actually watching the game in question properly. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Think that might be my problem kinda. Not that I'm saying I thought he was poor for the sake of it (see my recent turnaround on the back of some qg KR23 performances), more that I'm notice when he gives the ball away, picks the wrong pass, etc. more because I'm half looking for it, or expecting it I suppose. Still don't think he was particularly poor or particularly great, and at least seemed to get the simple things right more often than not yesters. More than anything, I simply feel that I expect more from him, since he is fb, and was turning in much better performances as recently as the start of this season.

Btw, anyone not going to Milan congregating in Mancs anywhere? Tempted to head up.

What is wrong with him? Ruud leaves, he establishes himself as first choice alongside Rooney and contributes greatly to United's success this season.

It's the pinnacle of his career to date. Why would he want to give that up? He can't be that stupid not to have taken his manager's warnings seriously. Any other person would risk injury rather than get cast out of Old Trafford.

It indicates that he has some psychological problem due to all his injuries. I just can't explain it otherwise. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

It's the classic for the perenially injured player. They've had so many injuries in the past that every niggle that should be something to play through and ignore, becomes in their mind potentially the start of another serious lay off. So they don't risk it where others would, and both miss huge numbers of games anyway and **** their manager off at the same time.

I do have sympathy for him. When you've had the number of injuries he's had, i don't think there's many of us who wouldn't think the same way. But at the end of the day, the club has to come first, and we need someone we can rely on.

Don't trust me ask PMLF he'll confirm that anderson has never played as a left-back for brazil.

That quote from the paper is probably just made up tbh

But if you want to try him at left back be my guest, easy open corridor for the opposition icon_wink.gif and even when he's there he can't defend proper (but neither can roberto carlos so maybe that's the point icon_biggrin.gif)
