I know the arguments for getting a backup keeper in, but at the end of the day it's not exactly CRUCIAL to our chances next season is it?

Whereas failure to sign a midfielder could very well see us in the UEFA cup next year.

Momo works off tiny changes in air pressure to work out where the ball is iirc.

His plethora of yellow cards can be explained away by Alan Smith's getting high on oxygen messing with his sensors.

ffs I suspect we "could" have got Van Nistelrooy about 5 years earlier for much less than 19m.. doesn't mean it wasnt a good buy </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

True, and in addition to that when we finally signed him we paid a million or so more for van Nistelrooy than we'd agreed to pay a year before when the deal fell through because of his knee.

I don't believe any of us wouldn't have questioned the logic of that regardless of his record at that point and the fact that he'd played a few games towards the end of that particular season letting us see that his knee was holding up.

Yorke is another player I thought we over-paid for at £12.6m, but his performances ended up justifying the outlay.

Yes, Spurs have driven a hard deal for Carrick, and at £18.6m in total (which may or may not be realised) it is a lot to pay but if he becomes the player we build our midfield around for the next 5-8yrs then that could be seen as an outlay of between about £4m-£2.5m a season.

People sit and say he's Englands current 4th/5th choice MC, but what do people think Gerrard and Lampard would go for? Peanuts?

Gerrard has been touted as a £30m+ player and been heralded since youth as a future great.

Lampard's value has been suggested as being close to that and thats based on 3-4years of high level performances. Nobody would have expected him to have reached the levels he has done at that point and now for a number of people the £10m Chelsea paid is really good value.

Hargreaves would be imported from a top club in a foreign league where transfer fees are on the whole markedly less inflated, but would still cost a reasonable fee.

As for Scott Parker, we missed a trick (as with Duff) but there's no guarentee that Chelsea would have sold us a player who would have markedly aided the prospects of a close rival, and Newcastle aren't mugs, if we tried to pick Parker up from them they'd probably aim to gouge us as much as Spurs have with Carrick.

The bottom line is any domestic MC we pick up is either going to be billed as too young, not talented enough, or too expensive. Any comparably top class MC from abroad is likely to be the target of other top clubs, or at a top club already and as such difficult to prise away. Then there is the "he won't adapt" argument fostered by the signing of Veron, a Manchester United player but a player signed at the wrong time.

Lets give him time to prove himself capable before deriding the fact that we have a talented and capable player, who though not ideally what we need now, could help us through in the short term and may well be exactly what we really need 12-18months from now.

I may be getting a tad carried away, but this pre-season is the first I've really seen of Lee Martin, and he really seems fffb. Good touch, good dribbler, and delivers a great ball.

Not the worst back up to Park/Ronaldo/whoever we stick on the wing before playing promising youngsters anyway.

If we don't get Mascherano/Gattuso, lets get Hargreaves! If we miss out on him, then we go for some random lower league midfielder. If we miss out there, I'll do the job (what's the boycott policy on working for the Glazers? surely you'll be taking money away from him), and if we still miss out, maybe we could get my great great great grandfather to rise from his grave to fill that hole. if it still not filled - then we go to Vieira.

MANCHESTER UNITED finally got their hands on Owen Hargreaves yesterday — when the club’s security staff whisked him away from his England hotel.

SunSport pictured Hargreaves being driven off with his United guard at 7.40am as the club closed in on their £13million target.

Bayern Munich are determined to hang on to the midfield ace, who starred in England’s 4-0 friendly win over Greece at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

But he was met at Manchester’s Lowry Hotel by a man from security firm CES, which is used by United.

The same burly guard, an ex-forces member, was recently snapped escorting new Man U signing Michael Carrick.

Hargreaves, 25, desperate to leave Bayern for Old Trafford, was driven away in a silver Audi — one of a number supplied to the club.

Hargreaves’ agent Roman Grill has spent two days in Manchester trying to do a deal with United boss Alex Ferguson.

Last night, Grill told SunSport: “I don’t know whether Owen has permission to talk to United or not. Owen’s interest in playing for United next season is serious.

“He has a contract to 2010 but the chairman at Bayern insists there is no chance of Owen being sold. Owen has to talk with his club and make his plans clear. This should happen in a very good atmosphere.â€

As far as complaints about Ronaldo are concerned, when it comes to showboating, who's been complaining? The only time i recall anything like that was the league cup final. With end product, we've had three years of it being generally poor, against little over three months of it being much better. I don't think it's unreasonable that it will take longer for that perception to go completely, and it already is to some extent. Lawrenson on MOTD tonight saying he's been the player of the season, and he won the fans player of the month for last month, which apparently is an award voted for by the fans of all premiership clubs.

And as for diving, he's certainly been better this season, but today there were at least a couple of occasions that were blatant dives, one for the penalty, and it's simply cheating.

he'll be behind saha, rooney, solskjaer and larsson at least, quite possibly rossi too. unless fergie thinks reserve football is a suitable introduction to the english game and english conditions, going out on loan seems the best option. no point keeping him here and not playing him.

Hornets keen to keep Foster

Watford manager Adrian Boothroyd has vowed to fight for on loan Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster should he be deemed surplus to requirements at Old Trafford.

The young England shot-stopper has impressed in his season-and-a-half loan with The Hornets and was a major reason behind their accession to the top flight.

But veteran Edwin van der Sar's award of a new contract at Old Trafford, combined with the signing of West Bromwich Albion's Tomasz Kuszczak has led to question marks over the plans for Foster in the north west.

Watford have secured his services for the rest of the season, but Boothroyd has made it clear he would like to keep the prospering prospect should Sir Alex Ferguson decide to sell.

"They will have to fight me for him," Boothroyd explained.

"No he stays here all season. He has been absolutely superb this season and he will be a better goalkeeper from what he has been having to face week in, week out."

Watford are currently nine points adrift from safety, having won just once all season and must start winning, beginning with the visit of wigan Athletic to Vicarage Road on Saturday. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

The legend of Fergie has with no doubt been dulled over the last couple of seasons as his decisions have became sporadically brilliant and bizarre. However if he were to win the title this year with players such as Evra, Vidic, Ronaldo etc all contributing hugely it will be proof that he has managed to (finally, took about 3 seasons) build one last title winning team. If he retired having won the premiership with arguably four different sides the legend would probably be complete and it would be in everyones best interests if he left (as long as we don't sign Sven as a replacement).

Only problem with Mourinho is that I'd prefer to see him lose his sometimes negative outlook but I hope with the team he would inherit he could bring himself to do that. On the grounds that he's a **** doesn't matter as if he came here he would be as BBB said, our ****. Probably won't happen though, Fergie will most probably proclaim that he feels about 20 again and wants to have victory in europe once more and stay with us for another 5 years.
