If we buy two midfielders, with the second being of the type you say, that's fine.

If we don't, to buy a player to improve the passing when even at 2/3 of his best a returning Paul Scholes does that hugely, when the only so called battler we have is John O'Shea seems ludicrous to me.

As for the comment that 'we could have signed Pennant', does that not show you that alone he's not the player we need, if that's your justification for it? It's like the people who tried to defend Sven by pointing out that he wasn't as bad as Keegan. If ever there was a case of damning with faint praise, either of those would do the trick.
