<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content">Column: Mikael Silvestre

This is my eighth season at United. Thinking about that reminds me about the number of players that have been and gone during that time. Top players. But the reassuring thing is that they are always replaced by top players. As long as Sir Alex is here, that won’t change.

The club is meant to win trophies; Manchester United is synonymous with success. And when it doesn’t come people are upset. That is why the players are ambitious for success this season. We are together and growing in confidence that we can win the Premiership.

It’s a young team, I am now one of the oldest players. But at least I’m not the oldest, with Ole, Gary and Ryan still in the squad! One player that I really enjoyed playing alongside at United had a huge amount of experience - Laurent Blanc.

His career touched its highest point when he was well into his thirties. He was 33 by the time he joined Inter Milan. I left Inter for United about a week after he joined them in 1999. He still had another four years left in him after that and when he arrived here it was a good opportunity for me – if a little bit strange – because Laurent was somebody I looked up to when I really young.

Even though he was at the end of his career, you could still see he had the ability and the experience to compensate for his lack of pace. If I can play on as long as he did I will be doing very well. And why not do it here?

The only thing is that the Premiership requires speed. I’ve noticed that defenders have to run more and more. And with players like Ronaldo or Rooney… it’s tough! But, if you’ve got them on your side it’s OK. If Sir Alex buys all the fast players maybe I can play on as long as Laurent did.

Do I see my future here? Yes, as long as the manager wants me in his team. In the past I’ve been linked with a move away from United, but what I have said has often been taken out of context. Once I was asked whether I would return to play in France when my contract expires here. I said that, havingplayed in France, Italy and England, if I were to move it would be to Spain. That was turned into something else.

It’s normal for people to talk when a player is not playing. Wes Brown had the same thing recently, but we just have a laugh about it when we read the papers. I’m used to it. And if you’re not in the team or on the television doing an interview people somehow think you’re dead. Anyway, I’m not, and I’m looking forward to getting plenty more opportunities in this team, at left-back or centre-back - wherever the manager needs me. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

:*************************)

Attitude is first class even if his ability isn't.

assuming Agbonlahor plays, i think i'd take Mickey over even an on-form Gaby purely because of his pace.

although saying that, either Agbonlahor is a bit knackered or his pace has been hyped to high heaven because not only did Paddy outpace him a couple of times last week, he was also matched for pace by that reknowned speedster Darren Fletcher :/

Gabby has been carrying an ankle injury for about 6 weeks and shouldnt really be playing.

He's stupidly quick.

I'd question whether Agbonlahor would be up front even if he is playing. Isn't he far more likely to be as he started in the cup, wide in a 4-5-1? And while it's certainly debateable given his pace, i'm still not convinced Mickey's quick feet aren't nullified by his slow brain in that argument. An in form Heinze should be aware enough to use his positioning and awareness to make a straight foot race from a level start rare.

I'm not saying it would be a clear cut decision, but i'd certainly be leaning towards Heinze.
