tbf, that's a bit trite really. you can only 'find a greater level of consistency' if you're playing regularly. when Beppe was playing regularly for our reserves, he couldn't have been any more consistent - his goalscoring record says it all (basically goal a game for a deep-lying forward). when he's played for our first team, he's been consistently good. he barely got a sniff of an opportunity at newcastle, so **** knows how he's meant to be consistent there.

</div></BLOCKQUOTE>

To be fair your right - didn't really express it well - meant to say that sometimes when I have seen him he looks excellent, but at other times he has looked really really poor - suppose part of that is lack of match practice when he is thrown in though.

If Rossi/Smith are on the way out - and although Smith would give you options off the bench to change things, I don't think he's good enough to change your style of play for, and OGS has another year on the legs - seems likely you will look to bring in a striker this summer - now based on the Glazer's so far Dean Windass would seem the prime candidate, but assuming Fergie gets to spend a decent sum of money who are you looking for? Really has to be someone with terrific pace to complement the rest of your team, ossibly Bent if Charlton go down? Struggling to think of many other Premiership strikers who wouldn't cost silly money - Defoe would be at least £15 million.....ar you guys still apparently keen on that Hunteelar (sp?) guy from Holland - what player would you say he is similar too?

Of course, you could just bring Ruuuuuuuuuuud back icon_wink.gif

Why the likes of Frank Lampard, Ryan Giggs and John Terry will soon be able to buy their way out of their contracts.

David OrnsteinJanuary 18, 2007 12:30 AM

Several of the Premiership's leading players will be in a position to walk away from their clubs this summer by exploiting a clause in Fifa-adopted European Union law. Article 17 of the regulations for the status and transfer of players allows the likes of Frank Lampard and John Terry to buy out their contracts at Chelsea and then negotiate a move elsewhere.

The former Heart of Midlothian defender Andy Webster made history by terminating his contract at the end of last season. Fifa ratified Webster's move to Wigan on September 4, seemingly creating a legal precedent for the conduct of international football transfers. The ruling utilised suggests that Hearts would only be entitled to an amount equal to Webster's salary for the remainder of his contract as compensation.

This legislation could allow a raft of top Premiership names to follow suit. Referred to as the "protected period", if a player's contract was signed prior to reaching the age of 28 then, provided he has completed three entire seasons or three entire years, he is permitted to end the deal with 15 days' notice. If the contract was signed after his 28th birthday, only two seasons or years must be served. "The protected period refers to any players regardless of their age," said a Fifa spokesman, responding to a misconception within the game that the rule is applicable only to players aged 28 and over.

In addition to Terry and Lampard, Chelsea's Arjen Robben, Manchester United's Alan Smith, Liverpool's Xabi Alonso and Arsenal's Freddie Ljungberg are among a list of top-flight players in a position to take advantage of the stipulation come the end of this season.

Regardless of the fact that he may immediately negotiate with a new employer, as a free agent he personally must pay compensation to his former club and, although that fee is officially decided by a Football League or Premier League appeals committee, it is likely to be the amount that remained in his contract.

A potential problem, which is believed to be the reason why no English-based player has yet to capitalise on the legislation, is the likely expense incurred. Lampard, for example, would be forced to pay Chelsea about £12m for his remaining two years. However, the clause could become a crucial negotiating tactic used by players and agents to obtain a better deal.

"Article 17 is only likely to be used as a last resort [for a unhappy player]," said the sports lawyer Graham Shear. "I feel that its use as a strategy to leave a contract early as a free agent is problematic.

"The interesting question in this particular game of poker is how a club would react if one of their players served notice as part of a negotiating ploy. At the top end of the market, the amounts you're talking about and the potential risks are too big. But a lower-profile player may be able to balance the risks against the potential compensation payable and indeed his prospective earnings."

The agent Jerome Anderson added: "If there are genuine reasons for a player to want to buy out his contract that is only a good thing for footballers."

Great to have Rene back.

And can anyone see us selling Rossi without giving him a chance? hes the most talented forward we have had in the youth ranks since Sparky.

Not to mention Rossi can play the withdrawn role that Rooney plays for us. We are intent on playing that and have been for years so why would we sell our only other forward capable of playing there?

Ole is 33 and Smith yet to make a come back from a badly broken leg.

Everyone at old Trafford has raved about him and he has impressed all in his 12 appearences and 4 goals for the club. To sell him would be utter stupidity and just look at Scholes, he hadnt broken through at 19.

And to whoever said Rossi has looked good some games and crap others i assume you mean newcastle because i dont recall him every looking crap for us.

At newcastle he made what, 5 starts? 3 on the left wing and the other games were all few minute cameos. Those are hardly conditions for a young kid to excel.

Rene icon14.gif

Ronaldo to Juve icon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gif...aye, that'll be the day.

I think we're just going to have to wait and see with Rossi. At this point I can't tell if there's a definite plan for him or not. We can all see in theory how he'd be used for the first team but until we really see it we're in limbo as much as he is. Nobody at the club says anything bad about the lad but I don't think you can point to any really concrete statements of intent about his future to come out of the club recently apart from to say that they're looking for him to gain experience.

United offer Ron to Juve

Manchester United are supposedly ready to offer Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus in return for David Trezeguet and Raffaele Palladino.

Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport claims that United have renewed their interest in the Frenchman, who was already targeted last summer as Ruud Van Nistelrooy’s successor following his Real switch.

The Old Trafford outfit are apparently therefore ready to offer Ronaldo to the Bianconeri, but Sir Alex Ferguson has now asked for 22-year-old Palladino to be included in the operation as well.

While Juve are ready to sacrifice Trez, whose contract expires in 2008, they are unlikely to allow Palladino to leave seeing as he is part of their future plans.

Juventus have instead offered a youngster between Paolo De Ceglie, Claudio Marchisio and Sebastian Giovinco and are now waiting for a reply from the Premiership side.

Ronaldo is a market target for various European clubs including Barcelona, Valencia and Real Madrid, but Juventus could be favoured in the race to sign the 22-year-old.

The Bianconeri are ready to offer the midfielder a contract which would see him keep hold of his lucrative image rights.

Sportswear giants Nike, who supply both the player and the Italian club, are also reportedly ready to financially help the Turin giants net the 2006 World Cup star.

as for other stuff:

Rene - \O/\O/\O/. huge plus for us. wonder how long it'll be before he re-takes the reins of the reserve team, Choccy was only meant to be a temporary appointment and Rene was doing incredibly well with them before he left.

Rossi - this better be an experience thing, and we better be f**king certain Larsson is staying until May. if this is him on his way out then what chance have any of our youngsters got of ever coming through under Fergie? and if Larsson goes back in March, we're back where we were a few months ago - one injury away from having no attacking alternatives whatsoever, and a couple from having to field a makeshift strikeforce.

Gaby - his quotes are baffling. the stock exchange statement clearly says 2009, and there's absolutely no way it's this summer as we simply wouldn't have let his contract run down this far without even attempting to extend it/sell him

tbf, he's only started six games for us. five of them were in the cups, four against lowly opposition, and he's impressed in them all (even taking into acccount the poor quality opponents). he was very good in his one other start (charlton in the league last year), made an impact off the bench a couple of times in the league. i'm not sure what else he could really have done, or what else we could have expected from him.

only time he's looked to be struggling was this pre-season, where he had a bit of a rooney-esque mare in front of goal.

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content">Ole praises Sir Alex and Carlos

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has praised the work of Sir Alex Ferguson and Carlos Queiroz in taking United to the top of the Premiership.

The Reds have emerged from a transitional period where Sir Alex constructed a new team. Now part of the old guard, Solskjaer, who turns 34 next month, has had the unique opportunity to observe the team's progression from a distance and at first hand as he continues to show excellent form after more than two years out with a knee injury.

"We have grown to know the ideas of the gaffer and Carlos," he told ManUtd.com. "In the last two years we have not been at the very top, but we can see now that their work is bearing fruits.

"We all recognise situations much earlier in games. Now we are really starting to move forward and you can see that with the results we have been getting, the football we are playing and the position we are in. The team is playing some great football, we're looking very strong and dynamic."

The Reds head to Arsenal on Sunday in what could be a crucial weekend with Chelsea travelling to Anfield. Solskjaer now has nine goals in 17 appearances this season - the most prolific strike-rate in the Reds' squad - but despite the campaign going very well personally and for the team, he is not getting too ahead of himself.

“We wanted to be top of the league in January,†he said. “Now we're in that position, we want to be there in April and May. But we can’t think about championships or trophies, we have to take it a game at a time." </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

By Chris Stanton - Created on 18 Jan 2007

Helsingborgs have claimed the original loan deal for Henrik Larsson's switch to Manchester United will not be extended beyond March 12.

Reports claim Sir Alex Ferguson is keen to tie up Larsson's services until the end of the season after an impressive start to the Swede's Old Trafford career.

But Larsson's parent club's chairman Sten-Inge Fredin claims he has ended all doubts over Larsson's future by insisting the former Celtic striker must return in time for the start of the Swedish season.

"Let's end all the speculation," said Fredin.

"Henrik will be back at Helsingborgs after March 12. We would never have let him go otherwise.

"Henrik means so much to us, from both football and marketing perspectives, that there is no way we would let him be out on loan when the Swedish Premier League starts."

Fredin's latest comments are a marked departure from earlier comments this month that his club 'would not stand in his way' were Larsson keen to remain at Old Trafford. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Manchester United fans are planning to stage a protest against ticket prices when they visit Fulham in February.

United supporters are being urged to spend nothing once they get inside Craven Cottage after learning they must fork out £45 each for adult tickets that were sold for £10 apiece to Wigan fans when they visited earlier in the season.

Pete Boyle, who attempted to organise a similar protest at Birmingham's St Andrews two years ago, wants Red Devils followers to not buy programmes or refreshments in the hope Fulham reduce prices for the game next season.

The Cottagers charged United fans £25 for the seats in 2004/05, representing an 80% increase in two years.

at birmingham you have to go through a fenced off car park area to get to the turnstiles. It's a secure car-park too so all the coaches go there. Boyle was walking around 30/40 minutes before kick-off handing out leaflets about the boycott in front of the police with no problems.

Then when he went inside and did the same thing in front of the actual kiosks they suddenly arrested him for breach of the peace or some other ********. Was let off without charge a few hours after the game IIRC

Anyone ever met him?

My dad has twice, once in Monaco and once in Glasgow and he says he's a ****. Walks around like a big hard thug, but infact he has a posh accent and is trying to be something he isn't and is mainly interested in making money out of the fans. His coach as an example, at the start it was 'we're not going to rip the fans off, like the club' and after a couple of aways he bumped the prices up and just checking now he's charging dearer than the club to go to spurs.

last I heard Boyle wasn't even running coaches anymore :/

we've travelled on the boylebus a few times to cardiff, cheaper than official club coaches and trains and a good laugh. spoken to him a couple of times years ago in the blaize and last summer in matt and phreds in town, seemed a decent bloke. blatantly loves the attention he gets and the 'celebrity' he has among certain sections of our support, but why not. least he actively does something to try and improve the atmosphere inside OT.

and if he's got a posh accent, so has BBB

Renee icon14.gif

Rossi icon13.gif

On the Rossi subject, I agree like the majority of you he does need to go on loan again, just to gain some first team experience (Newcastle was a complete waste of time for the lad). Just not sure if shoving an 18 year old into the starting lineup of a struggling, second from bottom Serie A side in Parma is going to benefit him , even if he doesnt end up staying with us. I mean its obvious the kid has talent but hasnt been given the stage to prove it. Mon Beppe being the saviour for Parma and coming back next season to us.

Add to this the fact that Henke is going back to Helsingborgs at the agreed return date and this leaves me thinking that either A) fergie has a complete lack of confidence in our kids or more than likely B) Another example of Uncle Malcum not wanting anyone who isnt needed on the clubs wage bill.
