I’ve not read anything else from today but it looks like the “go to a replay and have Scholes back in the league†crowd got their wish so I assume they’re happy. Not too disappointed that we’re going to a replay though since it was a good cup-tie today. Not sure Fergie will necessarily see it that way since his decision not to make a change says to me that he wanted to try and get through at the first attempt. Thought we played some really nice stuff at times and even with the two avoidable goals it was our best performance for a while as a team. Just nice to see some carefree attacking football. Pity about the 10 minutes of slackness either side of HT but it happens. At least it was the cup not the league. Hoping that nobody got any injuries today as well. Anyway…

TK: Two great stops in the first half but looked shaky on crosses and set-pieces.

GN: Got forward more than he has been doing and did okay against Downing.

NV: More assured than a couple of his recent performances have been. Cracking tackle to deny Boateng in the second half.

RF: Started shakily against Yakubu I thought but got better as the game went on. Was concerned when he went down before HT.

GH: Possibly his best game this season. Really pleased with his work today.

CR: Thrived in the atmosphere, really good threat, took the penalty expertly.

MC: Had a really good spell following their second goal and demanded the ball more regularly in the absence of Scholes which I thought was a good thing. Actually saw more today of the kind of Carrick I expect to see post-Scholes. Did well breaking up play at times as well.

JOS: Tried way too many sweeping balls to the wings for my liking but generally did okay overall. Didn’t do anything markedly dangerous which is always a plus.

RG: Thought it was his best game for ages. Looked fresh, full of thrust when running with the ball, and did well picking his passes as well.

WR: Took his goal well but didn’t do anything else spectacular. Obviously could do much better but with us out of striking options at the minute I’ll be content if all we get from him is goals between now and the end of the season. I don’t think we’ll get anything else out of him at this point to be honest. He can get back into the groove properly next season.

HL: Cracking movement, closing down & build-up play in the first half, faded in the second as his numerous runs took their toll. Can’t criticise him really. Pity he has to go but its been a privilege to get to watch him in our shirt.

Would be easy to pick Ronaldo but I’m just really pleased with these two…

MOM: Ryan Giggs

2ND: Gabby Heinze

Pretty clear IMO but…

AFFG#2: Rio Ferdinand </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content"> Boss rues Boro equaliser

Sir Alex Ferguson believes United's FA Cup quarter-final draw at Middlesbrough could have ended very differently had the Reds gone in at the break a goal to the good.

Wayne Rooney had given the visitors the lead on 24 minutes, but a mix-up in the United defence allowed Lee Cattermole to fire Boro level right on half-time.

"Goals change games and their equaliser gave them that little break they needed to get back into the match," Sir Alex told MUTV. "It became a rousing Cup tie after that because Middlesbrough were absolutely outplayed in the first half.

"We looked back to our best and the football we played was fantastic. We really should have been three or four nil up, but we made the wrong decision at times when we got into good positions.

"To be fair they had a couple of half chances but apart from that we controlled the first period.

"You need luck in the cup and they got a bit of that with their first goal," he added. "But we have to hold our hands up for the second one - it was bad marking in our part. We shouldn't be losing goals like that.

"The important thing is we're still in the cup and although some people might say we could do without the replay, the best energy enhancer of all time is winning football matches. Hopefully we can keep on doing that because it's the best thing for us."

A Cristiano Ronaldo penalty conversion earned the Reds a replay at Old Trafford on Monday week after George Boateng had handled in the area.

"They were going mad in their dug-out when we got the penalty but it was a hand-ball, no question," insisted the United boss. "It was the only real decision we got off Rob Styles all day and thankfully Ronaldo tucked it away.

"We've played four away games in the last few weeks and we've had to battle through some of them. But we looked to have our rhythm back against Lille in midweek. We played with good discipline and good patience and you saw that again at The Riverside.

"The replay won't be easy because Middlesbrough will still think they've got a chance too. But we expect to complete the job at Old Trafford." </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

We did? icon_biggrin.gif

I hate Boro, so so much.

What a hovel of a city, utterly **** poor ground, literally it's plonked in the middle of nowhere. Police stopping us at a petrol station to search for beer, then a escort to the ground.

Having Fergie talk over the tannoy to tell us to "respect the stewards", having several messages of "Riverside is an all seater stadium please sit down", then the scoreboard "Sit down if you love football" a stadium announcer with a voice like a helium balloon.

Police on horses charging at United fans for commiting the horrible crime of not getting onto the coaches, a copper shoving a young lad for the same thing.

then onto the boro fans waiting for us giving us abuse and clenched fists and easeh chanting :*************)

I'd love a nuke to hit that utter hovel of a City, won't be going there for a game again in a hurry.

Forgot to ask if it's too late to send Kooshack back to WBA. Richardson looked good playing for WBA & that's the only reason I can thing Ferguson was tricked into thinking Kooshack was good enough as a backup keeper.

The guy is a total liability & at fault for both goals tonight as far as I can make out. Didn't catch anything & just makes the entire defence nervous.

People praising Giggs /o\

I remember when he had pace & actually ran at people.

He gets the ball now & runs away from defenders. He may not have the pace anymore but he should still be able to beat a man. In tonights game I ca nonly recall one instance where he actually ran at a defender & tried to beat him with skill.

Did I mention Boro is a hole btw? Police on a total poertrip trying to board the coaches with their horses. Tossers.

He is a good shot stopper but completely unreliable in air which is what he basically had in Howard and Roy Carrol. Just that Carrol also had his moments of complete concentration lapses icon_biggrin.gif

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content"> Larsson given fond farewell

Henrik Larsson bid farewell to United after the 2-2 FA Cup quarter final draw with Middlesbrough, but urged his team-mates to go on and win as many trophies as possible this season.

Sir Alex Ferguson said the 35-year-old was given an emotional send-off from the players in the dressing room after the game, with the Swedish forward giving some positive words of advice to his now former colleagues.

“I said bye to most of the lads, but I’m going to see them all on Tuesday [for the charity match] so I didn’t want to make too much out of it,†he said.

“I wished the players all the best for the rest of the season. Hopefully they are going to win something and I will be watching every game from Sweden, so that’s going to be great.

“All they can do is stay in all the competitions. As long as United are still in the cup there is a chance of winning it.

“Everything is possible, but it’s important that the lads focus on one competition at a time, and not think too much about what the other teams are doing.â€

The Swede said that although the draw against Boro means one more fixture, the performance showed resilience as well as quality.

“It was an entertaining game, a typical cup tie,†he told MUTV. “We started out very well today and scored inside half an hour.

“Unfortunately they came back at us at half time. But you can’t expect anything else when you’re playing a cup match. The other team will always give it their all.

“We showed great character in coming back into the match. We have a lot of quality in this side and we showed that not only can we play football but we don’t give up easily either.â€

Larsson scored three goals in 13 matches for the Reds since joining on loan from Helsingborg in January, but despite much talk of an extended stay he will definitely be going back to Sweden after Tuesday’s Jubilee Charity Match, for which he will play against United in Marcello Lippi’s Europe XI side.

He revealed that his short but sweet stay at Old Trafford surpassed all his expecations.

“It’s been a pleasure playing for this club,†he said. “I don’t have anything to complain about – the club, the fans, the players have been fantastic. It’s been even better than I thought it would be. You have some hopes when you first arrive, but this was exceptional.â€

Sir Alex added his own personal tribute after the match, declaring Larsson "a real credit to the game."

"He was superb against Middlesbrough," he declared. "He's done very well for us and is a real credit to the game.

"He got a great reception from all the players in the dressing room after the match which was very emotional. We've done everything we can to persuade him to stay, but he's going back to Sweden and we wish him well." </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

What a guy, as Jimlad said, privilege to see him wear our shirt.

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content"> Boss hopeful on injured trio

Edwin van der Sar will go for a scan on the calf injury that ruled him out of the FA Cup quarter final stalemate against Middlesbrough, although Sir Alex Ferguson is hopeful it is not serious.

The Dutchman pulled up in the warm-up at the Riverside and had to be replaced by Tomasz Kuszczak.

"Edwin's got a calf injury and he'll go for a scan on Sunday," said the Reds boss. "But hopefully it's not serious."

Despite the blow of losing the experienced goalkeeper, the boss was pleased with the performance of his deputy.

"Edwin's experience could have been vital during a couple of occasions," he said. "But I thought Tomasz Kuszczak was excellent. He made a couple of fantastic saves in the first half. He's a smashing young goalkeeper with great enthusiasm."

Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic are now unlikely to play against the Europe XI team on Tuesday, having picked up knocks in the game.

"The ones who need a game will get one in the UEFA charity match on Tuesday," said the boss, who mentioned Alan Smith as a player who will be given minutes to boost his match fitness. "Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic picked up injuries, they're doubtful for Tuesday."

One good aspect about the replay against Middlesbrough means that Paul Scholes will now be available for the league clash against Blackburn on 31 March as United look to clinch a ninth Premiership title. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

ruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuud > anyone, ever

mixed feelings about our game. game was there to be won, replay is a bit of a pain in the arse logistically and, on a personal level, financially, but the first half saw easily our best performance since spurs away, some of the football was fantastic and there were several standout performances. and ofc the other major upside is getting scholesy back for blackburn. koosh made two cracking saves but he's a bit of a nightmare aerially and cost us a goal at a really crucial moment. very much in the t-ho mould really, when we could do with a vdg-type as backup. gabi had his best game of the season by far i thought, did well going forward and there were some excellent blocks at the back. ronnie was ace, jos was ace for 45 minutes, seemed to get carried away though and forgot to keep things simple and remember his limitations. giggsy was useful, and henke was fffffffb. more positives than negatives all in all.

motm: gabi heinze

2nd: henrik larsson

gutted henrik's leaving, been desperately hoping something would happen to change his mind. been a privilege to have him here, he's made a great contribution which i think many have underestimated because he's not scored a stack of goals. he better f**king give me an autograph on tuesday though icon_mad.gif
