Northwich stay up, require drastic changes says chairman

6th May 2016

It had been a foregone conclusion that Northwich would stay up from the beginning of the season, but after the financial disaster they found themselves in, it soon changed that belief.

Northwich, sitting 2nd after fourteen games, lost the income of their chairman benefactor John Laurie III after his sad and unfortunate passing. Everybody who is anybody in the footballing world tried to help, but in the end it took a financially motivated consortium to buy the club from his widow for just £1. The club is haemorrhaging money at a substantial rate, now finding themselves in just under £1million of debt.

After the loss of their chairman, the club slipped down the pecking order and won just three more times in their remaining thirty four matches. It kept them up, largely thanks to those three wins coming under the reign of their third manager of the season (during the last seven matches of the season it has to be noted) renowned specialist Len Gray. The financial insecurity, which is now snowballing at a rapid rate, is leading the club down the path that many Conference sides have experienced in recent years; winding up orders.

Len, in his fourth managerial job in six years (Philadelphia Union 2010-13, AA Gent 2013-14, Northampton 2014-2015) has a massive amount of work to do, but so much of it is out of his control that he must now concentrate on youth players and working out what to do with the dangerously out of control wage budget.

The season is over. He now has time to look at his options and move forward with regards to players and staff, but come July, the work load is going to increase exponentially.

Highest earners and majority of first teamers leave the club

15th May 2016

It was expected to happen and the news has finally broke that Northwich have released their six top earning players. Liam Wilkinson, Kevin Smith, Danny Ashe, Wayne Riley, George Bennett and Alan Jones have all negated the final month of their deals to allow the club to restructure the finances. “It is a big blow to lose these six influential players from last season. I wish them all the best and have no doubt they will find clubs before the end of the summer.”

The remaining first team squad members that Len Gray has chosen to keep are last seasons defensive duo of Alan Kearney and Lee Beevers, top scorer Dave Adams and young Kiwi midfielder Eamon Spooner.

Assistant manager Aaron Jones has also left the club to take up a coaching post with Q.P.R.

Saroya signs on as assistant manager

24th May 2016

Former Yeading captain and non-league stalwart Nevin Saroya has joined Northwich to become Len Gray's new assistant manager. This will be his first role in England but recently left FC Haka in Finland as youth coach. Saroya, 35, will bring non-league experience to a side which currently has just four players on its books. “I am excited to begin this new chapter of my football career but are fully aware on how difficult this challenge will be. I look forward to getting together with Len and making things happen within a strict budget and time frame.”

Saroya previously played in 2005 for Yeading against Newcastle United in the FA Cup, enjoying more exposure as a result. He retired from playing in 2013.

Goalkeeping gaps filled as Northwich bring in two

June 3rd 2016

Len Gray has finally made the first move to rebuilding his failing side, bringing and filling the first two gaps of his missing first team by signing two goalkeepers.

Northern Irish Eamon Gray, 20, and Gavin Sorley, 28, have joined the club on non-contract terms. Gray, a former Coleraine youth player, and Sorley, a former Dumbarton and Solihull Moors stopper, will battle it out for the first team shirt this season. They will be challenged by the promotion of sixteen year old youth keeper Lee Garvey, who will continue in his role as U18 first choice while pushing for a first team spot.
