FC Bulle - Challenge League 2008/2009

League: 8th

A successful first season in the Challenge League. We were never in the relegation places, hovering around mid-table for most of it with occasional forays into the upper reaches. Great result considering our initial odds of 2000-1

The squad was a mix of young freebies, some older players at the club when I arrived and a few loanees from my parent club Sion. Major rebuilding required for next season when I'll have longer to scour the available players.

Aim for next season is to finish 8th or higher and get the finances in control.

Here is my group:

I just played the 1st Group game and unbelievably beat Man Utd 3 - 2!

Qualification a possibility?!

Full argument between NepentheZ and Dafuge on page 3 (iirc) of the Wallace v Roberts thread.

Think the exact number for Roberts is lost forever, but he scored far more international goals (and did it in england) so arguably has the lead. Also did it on an (again arguably) easier version of the game mind you...

ah right, that would explain it! unfortunately i never stumbled across players good enough to even mildly interest the top flight clubs until a couple of seasons ago.

Also, I don't think you're so bad having seen what that division is like, when you're semi professional it is impossible to get players of the quality you need to compete with the top 2/3.

thanks. apart from obviously being able to attract better players and scout central europe the main difference I have noticed is that good young reserve SL players are willing to sign before they leave their previous club. some of the players I have signed in my first Summer of being pro would probably have still joined UGS in the past but I would have had to rely on them leaving at the end of their contract and no other (better) clubs showing an interest. did not happen that often unfortunately.

basically the only way to promote does seem to be to turn pro. it just depends on the amount of time that takes...

The Challenge League is a nightmare alright. The only good thing is the prize money is decent. My second season is lookng like a bust after my chairman stepped in and sold one of my best defenders and my only goal scorer. icon_frown.gif

FC Bulle - Challenge League 2009/2010

League: 5th

The aim for this season was to better last years 8th place and sort out the finances. We were solid all season hovering around mid-table as we did last season. 6 wins, a draw and a loss in the last 8 games meant that was achieved although I think that was a slight overachievement.

Finances are much better thanks to the league prize money and my chairman accepting bids on a couple of players. I'd slapped huge prices on them in the hope of scaring off any bidders but in fairness the offers were too good to turn down.

Aim for the next few seasons is to ignore the transfer kitty as much as possible and race toward the 5m in the bank I need to turn pro. I'll be scouting for freebies or players I can buy for < 20k and relying on loanees from my parent club, Sion.

If I can maintain finishes between 5th to 10th while doing that I'll be happy.

Wow that was your chance, look Delémont was promoted with only 81 points! I havn't seen a team go up while dropping that many points :p Looks like you're making progress with the bank balance though, it was pretty easy to make the jump once you go pro.

As the position graph showed, I only got to 5th thanks to a good run at the end of the season. The squad is pretty awful really. I'm signing players so I can fill 11 shirts rather than because I think they can take us the the next level.

The good players just aren't interested so I'll just save the pennies as much as possible and try make the 5m in the next 2-3 seasons.

Don't think I have ever seen the champions with so few points either. The one season so far where I have actually had a chance 75 points was enough for 2nd.

There seems to be more variation at least in your game, Delemont have never gone up in mine and La Chaux de Fonds are never out of the top 5. It is 21/22 and both divisions are more or less exactly the same as they were in 07/08. Just checked and only 2 of the SL were not there in 07/08 and there are only 3 teams from the 07/08 lower divisions in the CL (we are one) so 3/4 of the CL is exactly as it was in 07/08 icon_redface.gif. 8 of the CL have not moved at all, 9 if you count us from the season after.

Anyway, saving the pennies is the way forward. Got so used to it that now I am pro I am having problems actually spending and offering high wages. I just can't allow it! icon_biggrin.gif

Cookstown Olympic 20011/12 Season Update

This was my first season in the Premier League and we were predicted to finish 13th. We started badly adjusting to the higher level. Transfers in were minimal with the club concious of wiping out the £75k debt, having lost £25k on each of the last three seasons.

In the end we survuved quite easily, finishing in 12th. We managed to knock £5k off the debt. In the cups we, again, managed to get knocked out quite early by lower league/non league clubs.

I'm back playing as Rakow in Poland. :-) I'll post some stuff soon.

I should have got relegated in my first season, stayed up on the ol' head to head record on the final day, but am enjoying a very nice second season, where at the half-way point I am 2nd, but its extremely tight!

My finances are simply atrocious though. I'm 400k in the red and am getting gates of around 500 in my 8,000 seater stadium. I think if I can gain promotion this season, the cash from the top-flight will come in handy!

There seems to be a lot of folk managing in Norn Iron still! Crazy! Much respect to anyone who completes the challenge over there!

Mendrisio-Stabio 2011/12

As the Duke of Wellington reported in Blackadder, we won. This goes down as my best ever season in terms on total demolition of a league dropping just 8 points all season. Things were going so well that I was annoyed to concede twice on final day to give myself double figures in goals conceded. Stars include Slovenian striker Luka Papez, Estonian midfielder Sander Puri and incredible winter free transfer pickup Dinis. Along with goalkeeper of the year Patrick Bantamoi who often didn't have a save to make we coasted to the title. We dropped out of the cup in the 3rd round to Thun but who could care, roll on Super League struggle.

I'm quite confident for super league actually, I did just lose my best defender for £750K +50% but my facilities are up to good and average and I think theres another upgrade coming although I've yet to see anyone good come out of my academy.

The thing is super league on my game looks very even, there were 13 point between relegation and Europe in the season I was promoted. Clearly I can beat one super league quality team in Thun and got promoted in the same way the other super league teams have with total demolition of the challenge league. Where the teams finish in super league seems quite random too so with the fact I can beat that calibre of team and them all being about the same, I think I can survive.

From the player screenshots it looks like you have some good players. Mine are a long way off that standard, hence the reason I'd panic.

Having said that, my 5th place finish in my second season must have boosted my rep because I've managed to sign players I actually think are good for the 2010/11 season. The previous summer players considered good by my scouts were blanking me. Now players they classify as Quality (5-6 stars) and better are listening to offers.

This did mean my pre-season took about 4 hours last night. icon_eek.gif

My Linhamn team got relegated and you guessed it I got sacked, so I decided to try my third attempt in Denmark

Svendborg-Danish Second Division West

Profile

I tried re-loading numerous times for B1909, but after 21 tries, I decided to go for Svendborg, they had an 8000 capacity stadium \o/ but only 100 seats /o\, the had trianing facilites icon14.gif, but had basic youth facilites icon13.gif, the had a full team icon14.gif, but only one quter were decent icon13.gif, I managed to build a squad ready for the season, we awful start losing 3-1 to Aab II, we maanged to win in are third game, and we didn't stop from there, by the winter break we were 4th, The winter went all the way till March so I arranged some frendlies with Denmark teams I made over 600k from all this and when we came back we were looking to gain promotion, we only lost four times for the rest of the season, going into the last game at 2nd all all we needed was a win to finish 2nd, we drew, amazingly Ikast and braband both drew and we secured a play-off spot, however I then found out reserve teams can't get promoted so we got automatically promoted to the Danish First Division, it was great, I couldn't believe we beat the odds once again.

Nagykata SE 2009/10

Finished 11th this season. Once place below last season, but the same number of points (Table). Relegation was never a concern, but finance troubles meant we had to trim the wage bill and sell a couple of our better players, including star striker last season Lorant Lakatos (Transfers).

Managed a cup run this time around, getting to the 4th round of the Hungarian Cup before being defeated by Hungarian giants Ujpest. We claimed a first division scalp along the way though, and the introduction of two leg rounds against Ujpest gave us a much needed financial boost.

Star player this season was new striker Zoltan Kiss, contributing 24 goals, with American Nick Lenicheck once again second (Squad).

A new sponsorship deal worth double the original deal has now cleared most of the debt, so hopefully we can push on. Only trouble now is that it's still difficult to sign anyone decent and star midfielder Lenicheck is in decline.

Will have to scour the free transfers once again it seems!

Well done Quacky. You have better players than me as well, which is a bit depressing as you are 10 years behind me icon_biggrin.gif.

Good luck.

I have to say that I think winning the SL will be much easier that getting promoted. The teams seem quite equal and promoted sides have won the title the season after and then been relegated 2 seasons later in my game. The big problem is surviving the first season, once that is done, it should be fine.

Forgot to update his bit:

Dean Evans: - Doesn't start as many games anymore, as the clubs reputation is attracting some great players, that are better than his current standard. He plays a lot in the cup matches though and he still scored 42 goals this season.

Club: 817 appearances, 1209 goals. Country: 92 caps, 72 goals

Promotion! We continued the great league form that carried us to a 3rd place finish last season and managed to win the league at a canter with the title being confirmed with 3 games remaining. An unbeaten streak stretching back to last season totalling 29 matches was ended on the final day of the season after a 5-4 defeat to Ballinamallard United, but this was not enough to save them from relegation! All this meant that we’d finally made it to the Premier League! Hopefully we won’t be seeing the First Division again.

This was also the season that we were finally able to get ourselves out of the group stage of the Intermediate League Cup and we also managed to win it – Clough Rangers first cup victory! What didn’t help was the earlier than expected exits from the Antrim Trophy and Intermediate Cup and this put a slight dent in the board’s confidence in me but promotion appears to have sorted that out.

Downing (46 Goals) and Blackwell (40 Goals) were again the main providers of our goals and when were forced into a match without both of them we struggled to find the net. Downing is even attracting the attention of Bolton and I may end up in a fight to keep him. I’m hoping that a £500k price tag will put them off. A season ending injury in January prevented Welch from making any impact this year, but Robbie Wright again bossed the midfield and ended with 17 Assists in 37 Games.

100th Game in charge – Shame it ended as a goalless draw!

Extreme Transfer Offer – In an attempt to scare Hibernians away from my number 1 GK, I ask them for 100k upfront, 50% sell on and 40 million after one international. Knowing that the guy was currently the only GK for the British Virgin Islands kind of assured me that he’d play the international. I didn’t accept the offer though as I thought it was taking advantage of a flaw in the transfer system. Although my Finances wouldn’t be in the state they are if I had accepted it!

So we’ve finally made it to the Premier League, now we need to become a powerhouse of Northern Irish football and make it into the money goldmines that are the All Ireland Cup and the Champions League. Next season also brings a whole set of new cups to compete for and hopefully some of those will be in our trophy cabinet come the end of the year.

I quite often use that international thing but with more realistic values unless I really want to say FCKU OFF!!! hes mine. Most I've got accepted on it was £10M + a bunch of other stuff in the contract so by the time he was sold on a second time I had made about £30M on the one guy. Don't think I would have been able to reject that offer myself though and surprised the chairman didn't step in :p

Ghostwriter, I got a bit of luck to turn pro quickly, I doubt it will take you long to be promoted now you are pro too. I agree I don't think super league will be too hard now that I'm in that top tier of 11/12 clubs. The biggest thing moving forward will be my fan base and stadium, right now I'm getting around 4500 at my games in 6500 stadium. Hopefully that should increase to filling the stadium throughout the super league season but still 6500 isn't enough to make a real push for Europe.

I dream of a stadium that size. I am still stuck with the 600 capacity local park I started with icon_biggrin.gif. Tbf, I have yet to average above 500 for a season so I can't see it being expanded until I get promoted. Attacking the SL with a stadium that size does not really bare thinking about!

I am the second largest club in Geneva so in theory there should be a huge fanbase.

I hope to be up next season or the season after, this season is all about converting everyone to pro contracts and improving various positions, can't see promotion happening. Once that is sorted, I can push on. If I am not up in 2 or 3 years, I won't exactly be amused! I do fear finishing 2nd a few times and losing the playoff though...

Quacky The main reason that I didn't accept the offer was that I didn't feel it to be in the spirit of the challenge. Things are meant to be a bit of a struggle and a £40million bank balance makes things very easy.

The attendances are the most worrying aspect of playing in Switzerland. I have a 5000 (600 seats) capacity stadium but my attendances are actually dropping each season. Averaged 600 the first season, now in the third season its closer to 500.

Stupid Swiss not appreciating football. icon_rolleyes.gif

Raków Częstochowa– 2008/09 + 2009/2010 Polish First Division

Profile

1st season

Media Prediction: 17th

Final Position: 15th

FA Cup: 1st round

Top-scorer: Piotr Bajera – 15 goals.

The first season was unspectacular as I stayed up on the final day of the season and should have been relegated bar two last minute goals from another side. Awful. No comment can be made. Did nothing of note whatsoever. I started okay but struggled throughout, only just jumping out of the bottom four towards the end of the season.

2nd season

Media Prediction: 15th

Final Position: 3rd (Promoted through playoffs)

FA Cup: 1st round defeat (on pens after a 4-4 draw)

Top-scorer: Tomasz Wocjik – 26 goals in 36 games.

Final League Position

1st leg

2nd leg

Again, not much to say. I bought big and as a result screwed my bank balance over. Some crafty free transfers from clubs in the premier division meant that I was able to bolster the squad and a bit of quality to the side. Wocjik was awesome this season, as was his main strike partner Rafael Krupa. Player to keep an eye on is defensive midfielder Piotr Kasperkiewicz and centre back Michal Steinke. Both look like absolute gems.

UGS - Challenge League - 21/22 - Winter Break

Turning pro obviously meant that it was a highly active Summer down in Geneva.

First to come in was the £170k 19yo GK. He was basically the only reason Gossau finished 7th last season, averaging 7.40+ and winning GK of the Year. He was promptly followed by a 36yo backup. That was perfectly fine for the GK position but there was another v good 19yo available at the end of his contract from Sion and we managed to beat a few good clubs for him. He is theoretically even better than the one I paid for. I still actually have Adler as well as all attempts to jettison him failed.

Only one defender came in (for £55k) but it was all-action in midfield, a new MR, an MRL (another Liechtensteiner and he has a left foot so is the new ML) and hoards of MCs; 3 came in for free (would have quite liked one to turn me down tbh) whilst a 4th came in on loan. The European scouting helped as I got a stunning (on paper) AMRC from Auxerre for the season. Up front 2 new STs joined as well. Overall 13 players joined and my wage bill more or less doubled.

On the way out was Kuhn, a young DMC who I somehow managed to convince Lausanne to pay £350 for icon14.gif and Stanisic, the emergency young MLC from last season who left for £50k.

As we came to our first match I worked out that we had 4 problems. 2 good (not sure which of the great GKs is best; not sure which of the 5 good MCs I should play) and 2 bad (only one of the defence turned pro and I still have no faith in DL; no ML backup (except the right footed Leerdam) and I have no idea how good the one brought in is).

So the bright new professional UGS era began with........a 1-2 defeat at Concordia; an unacceptable result in the first season let alone now. 2 draws followed (one acceptable, one not) and 2 points from 3 games was not ideal. Thankfully we stayed unbeaten for another 7 but hit a double whammy of Schaffhausen and Sion, both of whom are beatable but not this time. Drawing was a problem though, 8 out of 16 games, thankfully we won 4 of the last 5 so enter the break in a mildly acceptable 7th place. 4 defeats being our best record so far, 8 draws not so good. And nor have we really been convincing, last minute penalties getting us 2 home wins over distinctly inferior opposition. We can barely keep a clean sheet (3 so far) and upfront Judt (one of the new strikers) has 15 but they include 2 hat-tricks. Maric was supposed to be 3rd choice but he has 12 so far. The other new striker (who had scored 40 goals in the last 2 seasons on loan at Wohlen) has been a bit of fail so far. Still not sure who my best MCs are and all seem good rather than exceptional. The free 19yo has taken over from the expensive one in goal and done pretty well actually.

So, would accept 6th at the end as Delemont are flying after an awful start and Yverdon will hopefully collapse.

I'm surprised you don't have all you guys on pro contracts, especially if you've got £170K to blow icon_biggrin.gif

Also I would tend to build my team with quality defence and a quick striker and ram some stuff in the middle later. You seem to have done it the other way round. Strangely you still seem to have a chance though, by the break on mine there were still 3 undefeated teams, Me, Thun and Delemont (draws between us). I would certainly bolster your defence though, its surprising how many players for big nations will actually sign for you, I got two quality Spanish defenders in (I guess they're not quality in La Liga but for Switzerland icon_smile.gif )

Sorry for my quietness over the past week or so, my adventure in Bryntirion is being beset by corrupted save games - very curious as it's never happened before, but every time I go to reload the previous days' worth of play it corrupts.

Just running some test leagues and they're working fine but this really is being a bugger. All else fails I'll do something like a normal person and find a team that doesn't corrupt!

In other news by the way, Dinas Powys got promoted to the WPL this season - I'm a happy bunny for my adopted WPL team. Sadly it means no Gundo 2009 as them though.

I have a lot more than £170k to blow! It is just I am so used to free transfers that I am loath to spend it unless I need to (which I do, tbf icon_biggrin.gif). The only players at the start on pro contracts were the new signings, half the players I already had I have no desire to see next season so did not want to spend excess wages on them. I perhaps should have signed the really good ones up but I have just done that at Xmas.

I have not neccessarily stuffed the MC deliberately, it just kind of happened! icon_biggrin.gif The defence is definitely not top quality although I am happy enough with most of it, it is just not quite good enough for promotion. A ridiculously fantastic striker would not go amiss either.

My scouts have been all over Europe this season so hopefully in the Summer I can convince a few foreigners to come. My total lack of income from anything but sales and prize money means I don't want to shatter my wage bill that much; I am allowed £30k/week I think, am not even at half that at the moment.

Don't think I have ever seen 3 unbeaten teams at the break, 3 teams did each win their first 11 games of one season but lost soon after.

Cookstown Olympic 2012/13 Update

Not a lot to report.

Last season 12th.

This season 9th

Started well, finished poorly.

Player of the season once again Lee Wells - now scored 116 goals in 160 starts.

I've decided to offload some of my team this season in an attempt to get out of debt. I need to increase the ground from the present 500 capacity. I did bring in Leon Cort late on but he has done nothing, expecially with a pace stat of 3!

I guess you're stuck in the saving money phase with the number of seasons you've been going a bit. I was spending near £40K/week wages when I was promoted (and ****ing money down the drain every month). Way more than I could really afford, I'd probably be in financial meltdown if I didn't go up icon_smile.gif

I've found bringing in that many players can leave the team struggling for a few months as they take time to 'gel'.

I'm at the 2010/11 Winter break after a similarly hectic Summer and the results are not what I hoped for. We're sitting in 6th and lucky to be there after a run of 7 losses, 2 wins and 1 draw in the 10 games leading into the Winter break. The top 5 are miles ahead of us so i tink 6th is as good as it gets. Lucky for us the rest of the teams are so inept, otherwise it could be much worse.

I tried the praising them after poor performances tactic to keep morale up but in the last few weeks I just ended up lambasting one and all in the press icon_biggrin.gif

I have a few friendlies setup so hopefully I can get morale back up in those ready for the second half of the season.

On the pro contracts, I sign all my first team players, any promising youths and staff to pro-contracts as soon as possible. So, although the club is semi-pro, everyone is professional.

ghostwriter Switzerland is Officially the second most popular country to start in now, behind Northern Ireland who are in top spot. I think the reason why Switzerland has become so popular is in no small part down to you and the why you have documented your Swiss adventure which has immediately grabbed peoples attention.

Good job. Keep flying that Swiss flag. icon_wink.gificon14.gif

TKP Torun - Polish First Division - End of Season Review 2013/14

Story so far:

2008/2009 - 8th place in Second Division (53 points)

2009/2010 - 5th place in Second Division (55 points)

2010/2011 - 3rd place in Second Division (63 points)

2011/2012 – 14th place in First Division (25 points)

2012/2013 - 1st place in First Division (59 points)

Well, I'll get the sad bit out the way first. We're not champions any more icon_frown.gif

Despite losing 2 less games than last season, we also won 2 less, giving us 4 more draws this term. At home we were again fairly strong dropping points in only one defeat and two draws, although on the road we were less consistent - being defeated 6 times.

Overall in the league we finished in 3rd place : League Table

I was slightly disappointed not to build on winning the league, but it was tough, because we only actually made one signing (the only one I could see was worthwhile), and so our team was not really any better than last season. Saying that, our performance on the last day was very important, as we beat then 2nd placed Wisla 2-1 at home, to haul ourselves into 3rd above them, and therefore secure UEFA Cup football next season.

So, the league out the way, how about Europe?

Well, I havent left it until after because of some amazing fairystory, but I was happy with our efforts. Because we won the league, we went into the 2nd qualifying round of the Champions League, drawing Hungarian side Feherver. After a 2-1 defeat in Hungary, we needed a good home peformance. In the 56th minute Patryk Klofik had a great chance to put me 1-0 up from the penalty spot. He smashed it wide. We looked to be heading for the exits, until a goal in the 93rd minute from Zapasnik.

I was hoping for a decent draw in the 3rd round. We didnt get it. We drew Celtic. I knew it would be tough, and we played fairly well in the first leg, losing 2-0 at home, thanks to goals from Utaka and McGeady. Away from home, I was just hoping to keep it respectable, but my cause wasn't aided when Kapias (my CB) was sent off after 2 minutes. And after Celtic put the resulting free kick into the top corner, I dispaired. Despite being 3-0 down at half time, we limited them in the second half, losing 4-0 at Celtic Park (in front of 60,000 people - my players had never seen so many), and 6-0 on aggregate.

Into the UEFA Cup 1st round, and again the draw was unkind. We were paired with a team who the season before got to the Champions League First Knockout Round - Marseille. Away from home their class showed, as they spanked us 5-1 (altho it was only 3-1 going into the last 10 mins). Back at my place, and we managed a creditable 2-2 draw - again causing me to wonder what may have been if only we had got an easier draw.

Domestic cup wise, we were poor in the League Cup, out in the group stages again - although it was the so-called "Group of Death". In the FA Cup we got to the Semi-Finals, only to go out to the league champions 5-3 on aggregate.

Next season I think it will be more of the same in the league - as I still cannot attract players significantly better than what I have already. In fact, some of my players will not sign new contracts - inluding the First Division top scorer, and again my player of the season, Kamil Majkowski.

One positive is that my finances are now positive, and next season, should perk up signifcantly to over 1 million - altho we are hampered by the smallest ground in the league of only 2500 - which we sell out every week.

Looking at my club info screen, you can see we still are a small club really - Club Info.

So, season summary:

First Division – 3rd place (57 points)

Polish Cup – Semi Final (Lost 5-3 on aggregate vs Korona Kielce)

Polish League Cup - Finished 3nd in Group A (7 points)

Top Scorer - Kamil Majkowski - 34

Indeed ghostwriter, it is your highlighting of the interesting situation of the challenge league that got me to start there. Add to that reasonable rules surrounding foreign players, lack of highly irritating obsessive cup competitions and a genuine chance of success in Europe its a good country to play icon_smile.gif

I think its 5 non-Israeli players but I could be wrong about that, I have considered doing it in Israel but they have a lame league cup with group stages like the Hungarian one and I just hate long cup campaign things.

Polish Super Cup - Final (Lost 2-1 to Korona Kielce)

Champions League - 3rd Qualifying Round (Lost 6-0 on aggregate to Celtic)

UEFA Cup - 1st Knockout Round (Lost 7-3 on aggregate to Marseille)

Top Scorer - Kamil Majkowski - 34
