No doubt this improvement was the only bright spot as Braunschweig (trans. Lefty's attributes and stats have suddenly gone through the roof (well almost ) in just one season and he now looks like a quality player. (A game won by Novlaja against runners-up Slaven Belupo in shocking fashion.) While this rumour rings true, it has not been proven. Novalja found themselves slipping further into debt, caused by overpaying underperforming players, and few funds were forthcoming. Novalja owners seem to be banking on a sudden 'influx of funds' which some knowing football funds say can be traced back to a profitable money-laundering scheme. But the less said about that the better. At any rate, Mattimosi Janz clearly was relying on signing out-of-contract players and was in greats hopes of poaching one or two of his 'finds' in the 2004 to 2005 season as almost all of their contracts would be expiring. Otherwise it was clear that Novalja would have to try and make their way into European competition by some method or the banks would be calling in full force.
