Reducing player contract wages

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I would like to know what people are doing contract wise to reduce as much as possible increasing wages of a player when his time is up and is asking for a new contract with big wages. I recall some time ago one player of mine on his last year of contract was played very little but just enough times to stop him from complaining. This reduced his total amount slightly and i was able to bring him down to earth in terms of wages for his new contract, so i got what i wanted out of the deal by keeping him longer and on avg wage. This was a surprise to me against other times where i played them totally fully 90% of the season games which then they demanded a huge wage increase in the new contract and i couldn't keep them and had to be let them go.

What are you people doing when it comes to keeping your best players on the last year of his contract and avoiding paying a huge wage increase in his new contract demands ?

many thanks for the responses.

Your best players are going to want to be paid as such, and you should expect that they are going to want an increase on their wages. You can negotiate them down a bit on their demands, and a bit further with other clauses (performance based, release clauses and such), but ultimately the point is going to remain that they want the most someone will offer, and with a year to go, if you're not going to cough up the big bucks, they can walk in a year and go to someone who will.

I always try to lower the base wage a bit from their demands - while still giving them a raise. As Some Guy! says, it's only fair, just like IRL. I then try to make up for my lower offer with higher bonuses e.g. for goals scored. That way, if a striker scores a lot of goals, he may be more expensive but worth the extra money...

Yes, although new to this game, I'm trying to give them larger bonuses. I'm working with low league clubs and finding that often players may 'fall for' bonuses that are unlikely to be paid out (eg. promotion bonus when it definitely won't happen.). However, pretty tough without much money!

Bonuses are taken into account as part of wages calculation. Found this out the hard way when signing non-contract deals in the Vanarama N/S

I tend to start negotiations at about 5 grand higher than their current wage and while the header stays green i increase by 2 thousand each time. I remove all wage rise clauses and insert landmark goal bonuses for strikers and midfielders. Seems to work pretty well..i do this at the start of the season when i get the 1 year remaining warning..anyone who throws a strop and refuses to sign i then sell and replace with younger/cheaper options.

Not every negotiation needs to end in a contract offer. If the player/agent is being obstinate about inflated contract demands, the 'walk away' button is a viable solution. Simply leaving the negotiation and resuming when the player/agent has 'cooled off' and are willing to enter into negotiations again can lead to lower demands.

Offer silly things they won't get get, 500k goal bonus if the CB gets 15 league goals etc. I tend to keep on top of contracts, always sign the best players up early to LONG term deals, then if they moan tell them there is plenty of time left, never give in.

If someone is out injured for a long time then mid-way through can be a good time to seal them into a new deal on the cheap.

I tend to try and keep the contracts long and not let them get to the final year, usually I renew at 2 years to go, sometimes alot sooner if I feel the player is about the break into the first team. It's a game of trying to get in early and seal them in for a long period, then you can work hard to bring in their replacement, develop them for a few years and then flog the primary guy for top money - and bang in his replacement straight away.
