Need advice on using a 4-3-3.

Recommended Posts

So I want to play a 4-3-3 with 1 DM, 2 CM's, 2 Wingers and a lone striker. I want the mentality to be control. Reason for wanting to use this formation is that I already have one control/attacking formation and this new 4-3-3 will help utilise players I can't use the in other control formation due to not using a DM. So I've only ever used this formation on counter and am not sure what instructions to set. My other issue is that my two top strikers play with their back to goal and although are not slow, theyre definitely not fast. Both are best used with either a TM or DF role. Trequartista is also a possibility for one of them but again its not a strong point. However, I do have another striker that can play that role who isn't two shabby so Treq is an option too, though not desirable. I'd like to know what sort of tactics other people have used with a 4-3-3 on control/attacking and what roles and duties their players performed in that formation. Also, what attributes were found to be especially valuable.

It would be easier for people to help you if you provide some screenshots of the players in question.

This is my preferred formation and I've used it a lot. Generally, I've used the following roles for the ST position: DLF-S, F9, CF-S and Treq, all with various success. It all depends on how the rest of the team is set up in terms of roles and instructions. Try not to think in isolation for one position/role.

As a general rule, this type of 4-3-3 works best with a ST in a support role rather than attacking one, otherwise he may become to isolated and detached from the rest of the team. As additional advice, make sure you have one runner/penetrator from the wing (IF-A or RMD-A) and one from central midfield (CM-A or BBM-S). Personally I also like to use a playmaking role in the center.

What I'd do would depend on what sort of club you are. If you're a team that's expected to win most games then I'd go for something like:

WB-a CB CB WB-a

DM-d

RPL-s CM-a

W-s IF-a

DLF-a

Of course it'd depend on the players available and what I want them to do. But the key is to get support to the front man.

As for the team instructions the easiest thing would be to use the same instructions as your other tactics so they're already familiar with that type of football.

There are a huge amount of possibilities, you're asking something a little vague I think. Just in the lone striker position, it's possible to have anything from an Advanced Forward to a False 9 - it's all about how you set the team up. The same applies to the other positions.

Perhaps a good starting point for you would be to have a look through Rashidi's stickied thread - loads of good ideas in there about tactical set up and important attributes.

I would suggest reading and discussing in my post. It was from 3 days before yours, and has a lot that might help you.
