What's been your toughest defeat to swallow?

Recommended Posts

I just finished my 2nd season with Barca (4th in save overall) and came 2nd to Madrid. First season I beat them home and away and finished 6 points ahead of them on 106 points. This season I drew and lost against them and this happened:

104 points, 189 goals and bloody 2nd place! Luckily I beat them in the copa del rey final and knocked them out of the CL semis for some form of redemption.

Both seasons the league has come down solely to the results of El Classico

Just had it today: in 2026, had Australia in the World Cup (while also managing Man Utd.), made it through the group stage with a win and tie, was rewarded with a knock-out match against Brazil, countered them all game to a 1-0 win, then got Portugal and managed another 1-0 win. Got England in the semi-finals (with a squad that featured about 10 of my current or former players), took a 1-0 lead, gave up the tying score at 88 minutes. In extra time, with my squad fitness in the 50%-60%, lost my left back to a 2nd yellow card, battened down the hatches, and England scores at the 118 mark. They outshot us 18-6, had 62% possession...but if we had made it to penalties, I would have taken my chances.

Resigned after the game - not that I needed to (they were happy with our results), but I gave it 9 good years, won a couple Asian Cups and Confederation Cup, thought I'd leave it when it was a down time. Resigned from Man Utd a couple weeks later when they wouldn't give me a decent contract extension after 5 straight Premier League titles.

He on equal points and ahead on goal difference and B is before R, so even "name sorting" makes him win on equal points.

I guess Spain has rules on individual matches between teams?

I like long term saves, slowly building up a squad over the years and keeping the players until they retire, this unfortunately seem to be the worst possible way to play the game as it leads to massive complacency problems in a squad, when you're winning stuff.

I throw my computer out the window, when the only match some team wins in the league all year, is to my team because no matter what I do, they are just so complacent.

Yeah head-to-head record is how they sort in Spain :(

losing on goal difference is a b*tch! happend to me at Dundee Utd when after several years of struggling to to break into the top 2 and losing all my top players to celtic and rangers, i found myself losing the league on the last game of the season on goal difference. i had been winning that deciding game too with 30mins left.

before that i'd lost it by a point and three a season before that..

I once lost the UCL final, to a complete underdog (think Greece 2004.) Can't remember who it was. Something random like Espanyol. Crazy part was, I dominated the game because they were down to 9 men. My striker scored an own goal, and we lost 1-0.

Having two men sent off in the first half against Madrid in the Champions League semifinal and getting completely caked. I don't remember the score, something like 9-0. One of my defenders had a rating of below 4.

Giving away a bad penalty in the last ten minutes to lose 1-0 with Wrexham in the promotion playoffs.

In my career game when I was at Real Madrid I lost the Spanish Cup final two years on the trot to them, dominated the league and never really had any issues with them in league but lost 1-0 in both cup finals.:(

My Hammers 2-2 draw at home to Man City in the second season of my latest save. Ok not a defeat but it felt like one. Went 1-0 up through Valencia and was comfortable and then Alex Song went and did one of his Karate Kid routines to get sent off in the 37th minute that he throws in once or twice a season despite being asked to stay on his feet!! So I take off poor old Diafara Sakho to replace him with Kouyate and go 4311. In the 40th minute Jenkinson swings a lovely cross in and Valencia makes it 2-0, but in the 43rd minute Obiang gets injured so I replace him with Poyet. Swap to control second half to try and keep hold of the ball and looked fine but Zabaleta hooked a cross in and that technical god James Milner volleyed home to make it 2-1. It is at this point that Victor Moses can no longer hobble on with an earlier knock and I now have to bring my last sub on and replace him with Jelavic after a mere 55 minutes. In the 72nd minute Valencia gets a pesky injury and I have to take him off so down to 9 men and in the 85th minute Fernando gets himself a second yellow so you never know, maybe my luck has changed!! I switch to Key highlights as it is all getting too much but as another thread about the last 5 minutes of matches shows it drags and drags. Despite asking the team to keep possession Garbutt swings in a hopeless cross to no one and City break. We are in the 6th minute of injury time despite only 4 being given (why do they blow on time when I am losing?!) and a long ball goes to Aguero who strikes it from 30 yards out and it flies into the net. The only saving grace was they didn't add on another 5 minutes so they could get the winner!

I know the game can't er,,,,,, cheat but it sure does feel harsh at times. Gutted doesn't cover it!!

I lost 9-3 to West Brom in the FA Cup Semi-Final during my third season at Spurs. It wasn't even the huge loss that was the worst part. I was on track to win the league but this absolutely destroyed our form and morale. I lost 4 of my last 7 games in all comps, and was knocked out of the Champions League by Chelsea, who then went on to snatch the league title right out of grasp. We tied on 87 points but they beat me to the tittle with a goal difference of 63 compared to my 60. I still have nightmares about Brown Ideye and Loic Remy running at my back 4...

Can't think of a particular result, but my hardest season to swallow was when i managed swansea 2019/20 season. 2nd in the premiership, runner up FA Cup and runner up Champions League, Man U Won them all. Worst End of season ever.

The one i remember most, because it happened just yesterday :D is going into the last game of the EPL all i had to do was draw away to Norwich and hope Chelsea didn't beat Man City away, Norwich beat me 1-0 and Chelsea get a draw and are crowned champions. I was gutted.

Having a bit of a journeyman save. Ended up at Hull for the 2021/22 season. Reached the League Cup, Europa League AND FA Cup finals. Lost all 3 of them. The Europa League against Porto was the worst defeat I can remember. 1-0 up at half time, had a player sent off after about 60 minutes. Concede not long after. Make it to Extra Time at 1-1. Make it to the 120+3rd minute. Porto player hits the post from a corner, keeper catches it and falls into the goal. I would've taken penalties over that. The result destroyed morale and all the games took it out of the players. Had nothing left to give against Liverpool in the FA Cup final at the weekend. Couldn't take it anymore, resigned after Liverpool thrashed us and moved to Scotland in hopes of some free trophies to restore my ego.

Managing Novara, won the Italian Cup by getting a lucky 1-0 late game penalty win in the final against Inter. Last game of the season.

Next season, first game SuperCup against Inter again, they demolish me 7-0. Then I had to endure tons of news posts for years stating (Despite the 7-0 loss to Inter in the SuperCup, he did ...... ):mad::mad:

Worst defeat to swallow was probably on FM14 managing Boavista -- was 4-0 up against Barcelona after the first leg of the ECL semi and lost the second leg 7-2 to go out on aggregate. What made it harder was knowing that I wouldn't be able to get back to that stage for a few years as 7 of my starters were moving on as I couldn't afford to keep them in the face of big club interest. I resigned at the end of the season as I couldn't face rebuilding.

On the same save but later on I was managing Schalke and contrived to finish runner-up to Bayern in the league, cup and champions league 2 years in a row -- so any defeat to Bayern in that span was pretty galling as you can imagine.

Mine wasn't a defeat but a draw and it happened today. Playing as Southport I was one of four teams trying to secure two playoffs positions on the final day of the 2019/20 Conference North season. As we were 5th going into the game, a win would guarantee us the playoffs. We travelled to already relegated King's Lynn, conceded an 87th minute equaliser and finished 7th. :(

In one of the previous FM versions (can`t remember which one, it was either FM13 or FM14), I was playing Inter and was at 12 pts behind Juventus by January, managed a brilliant second half of the season and before the head-to-head game in matchday 37 I was sitting 1 point above them. I lost the game 2-1 courtesy of an injury time goal , and therefore lost the league title, as both teams won the last game of the season.

I also remember losing 3 or 4 Champions League finals in a row against either Manchester United or Arsenal playing as Hertha BSC on FM07, but it wasn`t as painful as the one above.

FM13: Over 32 seasons I have slowly transformed SønderjyskE from Danish mid-table obscurity to European glory. Won the EL, then the CL the following season - and then this happened in the Super Cup! Minor trophy, I know, but still. And to add insult to injury, I'm an Arsenal fan...

Just had my biggest defeat in FM ever.

Took Burton from League 2 to the Premiership, tycoon dumped us when in League 1, played some Premiership clubs in the cup and done rather well.

Really looking forward to my first season in the Premiership and we have a really good looking squad.

Pre-season went really well, well it did until in the week before my first game I lost both my strikers to injury, don't worry I won't be blaming my defeat on that.

On to the first game and it is Man City away, I was hoping to keep it tight and while I am in no way expecting to win I am confident of holding my own.

The game ended 7-1 to City!

They could have won 10-1 and I could not complain.

Well one thing that did bother me in the last 20 minutes when we were 6-1 down, my assistant kept saying "We are doing everything but leading, if we keep this up it is only a matter of time before we turn it around",

I think he was being a little too optimistic if I am being honest! :D

So yeah 7-1 in the first game in the Premiership was a bit hard to swallow!

I've been playing with Olympique 13 from Gibraltar and in the last fixture of the First Division, our team and Lincoln were in the first position, with same number of points, wins and goal difference.

They have played first and won Britannia FC 4-0, so I needed to win with four goals of margin to force another game between the two teams and with five goals to be champions.

After 84 minutes of absolute drama, we reached the 4-0 score against Gibraltar Scorpions, playing away from home. But in the 87' minute, they finished for the third time in the game and scored 4-1. Absolutely shocking. Five minutes later, they have made it 4-2.

Unbelievable.

Last season, my second with Man City, I lost one competitive game between all competitions: the FA cup semifinal against Arsenal. I was happy to not loose a league game and get the achievement for that, but a perfect season would have been nice. That summer (2022) I took Australia to the final of the World Cup, and lost, but we never should have gotten that far.
