Bogey Formation

Recommended Posts

I've developed a nasty habit for struggling against teams playing 532 with wing-backs. They'll sucker punch me with a ball from wide, which is all good and acceptable when I'm dominating them.

Trouble is, whilst I'm dominating possession and getting shots on goal, I'm not managing to create a good deal of decent chances.

I play a 4123DM Wide:

F9

AML Winger support, AMR IF attack

CML Defend, CMR AP Attack

DMC Support

DL FB Attack, DR FB Support, DCs both defend.

I've mostly tried exploiting the flanks with the extra men, both overlapping or slinging it in early to my faster attackers but I'm having very little joy. They fall to a flat back 5 and it just gets clustered in there. Anyone had similar issues or any suggestions for me?

Yes, if they are playing defensively, they'll pack the middle with six players plus tucking in wingbacks. Hard to crack. Stretching them wide will help as you've done, but you are still putting the ball into a congested area. Most of your shots will probably be from outside the area or from tough angles. The best thing to do is try to stretch them vertically to create openings in the middle. You can do this effectively by playing a defensive or counter mentality where sitting back entices them forward. Another helpful thing is to go fluid and so up the creativity of your side, and use a couple more roaming roles.

In terms of your setup, it seems that you are looking primarily for your AMR IF to score your goals. The F9 drops into space and is a creative players, and your attacking CM is a creative player, your AML is a winger who stays wide. Shut down your AMR and where are your goals coming from? You know your players best, but you need at least one more player to offer penetration into the box here. Because you have a DM, you can probably afford to be more adventurous in your central midfield. Something else that I did with this is have both fullbacks on attack, and switch your AML to an IF on support, so he gets inside and distracts a defender or goes unmarked. It is a risk on the flanks, but you have to take a chance somewhere.

Like the doc said, you desperatley need a runner in your midfield to bomb past your F9. I am guessing your APa and F9 mostely operate in the same space. Against a defensive side you should try to have more creativity in the cm/dm strata. I would probably also go with another attacking wing back too. Try changing your APa to a RPs and your CMd to a CMa. And than maybe a DMd or Anchorman to cover for the full back positions and mop up clearences.

My 2 cents anyway.

As someone who lines up, usually, with a 5-3-2 with the 3 being either with a DCM, CM or ACM (depending on the opponent) your formation and a flat 4-4-2 are two of my favourites to play against and we seem to have a lot of success against it. I'll explain why and hopefully that'll help you make adjustments for when you play against a team with a 5-3-2

First of all, we match each other for players in the middle of your attacking third. I don't need to worry about you overloading my defence and I'll still have the two wing backs spare. Your winger might cause me some trouble as he'll be a bit wider out and could pull away one of my central defenders, but that threat can be balanced against by either showing him onto his weaker foot by the wing back or trying to force him to cut inside where I have numerical advantage. I'd start the match with a defensive midfielder since you are playing an AP and F9 and would want to see if your AP is spreading the ball out to the wings or to the F9. But, anyway, when the F9 steps away from the attack he can be tracked by my DCM - no need to send one of my 3 CDs. If the AP does fling the ball out wide and you get a cross in, should the defenders be in the right position then it'll be either a 3 vs 1 or 2 situation with the numerical advantage with me.

Next up, with your two full backs looking to get forward, if they are caught up field there'll be a hole around 30(ish) yards inside your half. If one of my wing backs can push forward there might be a clear flank for him to take the ball down or a 1 vs 1 situation which is ideal for me. Which, it seems, the AI is doing to you. Since my defence is well set, I can afford to be adventurous up front, maybe a CM(A) with a DFL and AF with the other CM being a DLP(D/S) with the CM being instructed to close down your DCM quickly. Now, we match each other in your final third for numbers. My 2 strikers + forward moving CM vs. your 2 CDs and DCM. All I need is either one of your full backs to get caught up the pitch and I can quickly ping it out wide for a cross, or wait for one of your defenders to make a mistake and slot in a through ball.

---

Hopefully that makes sense for how I (and possibly the AI) would try to exploit your formation and set-up. To counter against it... well I'd probably push more bodies forward. Maybe hitting balls longer and into the middle earlier to try and catch my 3 defenders out. Hope that's been helpful :)
