4-2-3-1 Hopeless long balls from playmakers, gobbled up by full backs

Recommended Posts

Anyone else find that their playmakers just spoon it forward to wingers, first touch, every time they get the ball when there's just no need at all and the pass isn't even on?

It's reeeeeeally getting to me now and i can't seem to do anything about it. so often they're in plenty of space, just have to carry it forward a few yards and you can see things will open up but they just pump it forward straight to the head of the opposition full backs. This is Ozil, Ramsey, Wilshere we're talking about too!! What can I do about it?!

I'm currently using tactics that gave me great success on fm15. The only thing i can think is that it must be the higher tempo? But surely tempo has nothing to do with directness? I also have it set to attacking but again, surely attacking intent has nothing/little to do with directness? Barca are very attacking but they're not very direct.....

I see it with Arsenal as well. I haven't yet got them to play the way I want. Struggling with the fact that none of the mentality options offer short passing from defence and also in attack. You need to try and use TI's which I haven't yet got to do what I want.

There are different ways to be "attacking." In FM's case, mentality will have a big effect on how quickly players build attacks and how much risk players take to exploit space when it's available. Barcelona sometimes play attacking in that sense if they're chasing a result, but I wouldn't consider an Attacking mentality a good default choice for a more patient style of play.

In any case, as I said, the PPMs of the players you mentioned will give you problems on any setting. FM16 has been adjusted to give players more distinct tactical options, but a knock-on from this is that certain PPM profiles probably need to be adjusted a bit.

Yeh it's defeating me at the moment. I want to be attacking but not too direct. I want to play longer passes here and there but only safe ones, so shorter passing isn;t right either. Retain possession just isn;t cutting it, they're still having less than 50% possession and it seems to be all due to my playmakers who keep hoofing it long to no-one

Also, why play multiple playmakers if you want patient build-up? Even if you dial back risky passing, playmakers are given the freedom to set off attacks when they see fit. It's a specialist job for a player you want orchestrating attacking patterns.

I'm playing Ramsey CM, DLP Support and I have Ozil AMC, Advanced Playmaker. Not sure how else to use those guys, that's kind of what they are :)

In FM, there's a difference between a creative player and a playmaker role, much like how a prolific goal-scorer isn't necessarily a poacher in the FM sense or how a club that scores a lot of goals isn't necessarily a club that constantly plays an attacking mentality.

Aye, something's def changed tho! I've used these tactics for about 8 years with great success! lol. I always just set up the one tactic and play it every game. I'll just keep fiddlin, i'll figure it out eventually guess. I'm still winning the vast majority of games, it's just the silly risky passes out wide when there are loads of shorter options on that's annoying me!

You posted about the same issue last year and I quote;

These aren;t my usual tactics, i decided to try them this time because my normal approach hasn;t been working. I loaded up my most succesful save from FM14 and copied the tactics from that

Direct, risky play is now actually direct and risky, especially if an opponent leaves space behind their defence. This means you can't put an attacking high press tactic on autopilot with any team and expect results, because counterattacking sides aren't as helpless as they were on FM14/15.

hehe yeh I remember that now, not quite the same issue. it's funny I was playing everyone with attacking intent but was getting destroyed so what I did in the end was make them support roles til i started playing well then flicked them all back to attacking aagain and never looked back! I won champs leagues and titles with Reading using those very tactics :) £ attacking intent Attack midfielders and attacking full backs

One thing I've noticed is that Wingers seem much more disciplined this time around, that is to say they seem to stick to the wide positions much more. I found they'd drift infield to pick up the ball or offer short options before but now they're just sticking to the touchline off the ball, that might have something to do with it. I could set them to IF's of course....but they're wingers...hmmm maybe i can get them to roam a bit
